[Solved] Got problem when type adb command to root Desire Z - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I used this two guides when trying to root my Desire Z
first installed Android_SDK
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Howto:_Install_the_Android_SDK
and it works perfect, I can run command adb devices and my device is shown there.
the problem appear when I followed the second guide to downgrade the ROM
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting#Downgrade_to_1.34.707.3
under that guide, there is some command must be done:
adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp
adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell
Click to collapse
and when I tried to run "adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp" the command prompt replay "cannot stat 'psneuter': No such file directory"
I already put the "psneuter" in same folder (platform-tools) with adb.exe on directory C: android-sdk-windows.
Anyone has the experience or familiar with this problem? please help
I already search the same problem on google, and find some user has the problem too, but still there is no solution or I already did and useless

Try to cd into the directory that contains adb.exe

Make sure you are in that directory of adb.exe
Example how mine is
cd C:
C: cd android-sdk-windows
C:/android-sdk-windows/> cd platform-tools
C:/android-sdk-windows/platform-toold/>
Then from there do adb comman
C:/android-sdk-windows/platform-tools/>adb push psneutor /data/local/tmp
And so forth and it should go through fine
If you setup sdk in enirovemnt where can run adb anywhere then there less and simple way
All you would have to do is adb push (drag the file into cmd window) /data/local/tmp

thanks bro, work when I drag the file to cmd
but stuck again when I follow step 7 & 8
7. On the computer, open terminal and run the following command:
adb reboot bootloader
8. Follow the on screen directions, on the HTC Desire Z, on flashing the 1.34.707.3 firmware.

can I also ask this question in this thread? or is there anybody have a free time to guide me

after you do those steps in command type adb reboot bootloader once again make sure your in the adb.exe directory
from there phone should reboot int bootloader (white screen) and it will do a check for the PCIMG after it will ask if you want to install update Vol for yes and VOl for no

step 7 work fine, but phone only show bootloader and didn't ask to install update..
maybe stupid question but should i need to run RUU on my computer first after type adb reboot bootloader?

measn you dont have the PCIMG on sdcard
On the computer, open terminal and run the following commands:
adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp
adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell
NOTE: You should have the "#" sign instead of the "$". If you do, you have temporary root, and can continue on.
/data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.33.405.5
exit
Copy the 1.34.707.3 firmware to the root of the SD card (NOT in any folders).
On the computer, open terminal and run the following command:
adb reboot bootloader
Follow the on screen directions, on the HTC Desire Z, on flashing the 1.34.707.3 firmware.
Once finished you can can continue to the next section.

Ok I got it, it because I copy the RUU on the sd card instead PCIMG.zip, my bad.
another question bro, how to backup my current build (1.82.707.1)? if i downgrade to 1.34.707.3, is not the current build will be replaced?

anyway thanks very much for helping me bro, really appreciate it.

umm not that i know of really if you can gain temp root you can back up your apps and all with titanium, but you want a full nandroid your gonna need a custom recovery, and the way your going allows you to downgrade to achive root and custom recovery

If you don't know how to use adb/fastboot don't do this. Use the search function and google and learn how to use them. If you know everything about them come back. I made a pretty nice tutorial, many people used it already with success. But I won't add anything like "go to startmenu and type..."
If your INFOCID is NOT one of these you need to make a goldcard to downgrade!
HTC__001
HTC__032
HTC__E11
HTC__203
HTC__Y13
HTC__102
HTC__405
HTC__304
HTC__A07
HTC__N34
HTC__J15
check with:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem boot
Here is a great guide how to make a goldcard, follow the first part and come back here then.
Get theses 3 files:
https://github.com/tmzt/g2root-kmod/raw/scotty2/scotty2/psneuter/psneuter (right click > save as...)
https://rapidshare.com/files/1884723844/PC10IMG.zip
https://rapidshare.com/files/948281832/root.zip
Since this uses some security holes to gain root privileges on your phone some antivirus programs on your pc might warn you that this contains a virus. Thats not the case!
MikeChannon said:
It might be worth saying in the thread that android/Exploit.ragecage.A is the exploit being used to gain root and Users should not worry about the warning some software will give.

Extract misc_version_01.zip (only misc_version is needed)
Get the PC10IMG.zip from here or download the full RUU from here.
If you already downloaded the 1.34 RUU somewhere else you can skip this step.
Code:
adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp
adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell
Check if you have the '#' sign instead of the '$'
If you see the '#' sign you got root!
Code:
/data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.33.405.5
exit
If you have downloaded the 1.34.405.5_PC10IMG.zip copy it to you SD-Card and rename it to PC10IMG.zip.
If you downloaded the full RUU or had it already execute the exe file (mine is called RUU_Vision_HTC_WWE_1.34.405.5_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155556_signed.exe), start explorer and type %temp% in the adress bar.
Look in all the folders starting with a { sign and also in the sub directories if it also starts with a { sign, in one of the subdirectories there should be a rom.zip file with 298.442.206 bytes and the MD5 sum 2ff42897cd27e0db425a2cf36c8bd078.
Copy this rom.zip to your SD-Card on the phone and rename it to PC10IMG.zip
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
(or turn your phone of and on again while holding the trackbad).
Wait till the phone is in bootloader mode (white screen should look like this but with other infos http://www.brutzelstube.de/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/hboot.jpg)
Select bootloader (vol +/- buttons for navigation and power button for select).
Wait for the phone to scan the sdcard, once it's done it will ask you if you want to start the update. Confirm it and wait till it's done. Reboot with powerbutton when asked.
After the reboot check for version informations, it should show this:
Enable USB-Debugging on your phone
Extract root.zip
Code:
adb install AndroidTerm.apk
adb push busybox /data/local/tmp/
adb push gfree /data/local/tmp/
adb push rage /data/local/tmp
adb push root /data/local/tmp/
adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/*
adb push su /sdcard/
adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/
Start the Terminal app on your phone and type:
Code:
/data/local/tmp/rage
Wait until you see the message "Forked #### childs.", reset Terminal (menu > Reset Term). The Terminal app will close, launch it again. It will force close, launch it again.
You should see the magic '#' sign again.
Next type in the terminal
Code:
/data/local/tmp/gfree -f
, this will turn Security off (S-OFF), remove SIM Lock and set CID to 11111111.
Last step in terminal app on your phone is to execute these commands.
Code:
/data/local/tmp/root
sync
This will root your phone. It's possible that you get an error message "mkdir: /system/xbin already exists", don't worry everything should be ok.
After that restart your phone.
Now get ROM Manager and install the recovery image from there. If you are happy with the 1.34 software everything is done here, if not you can flash anything you want now.
Nice work! We allways need more people using the magic of root

yes, fastboot is a tool included with the android sdk just like adb
it has somewhat different functions though

Update: I dont think that the command shell should be in step 12?
2 things. Fastboot was not included in my fresh download of the 3.0 SDK tools.
I grabbed it here:
http://developer.htc.com/adp.html#s2
And second, with the newest Android 3.0 SDK, at step 12, pushing the su file, I recieve:
push: not found
If I go into adb-shell and type "push" I recieve the same error?
I got the moto dev drivers & 3.0 sdk and can do push / pull.

4. adb reboot bootloader (skip the next 3 steps if you have already unlocked via fastboot)

[Q] Permroot on Desire Z failed - what I do wrong?

Hello.
I've tried to root my Desire Z. I wanted to achieve only the ROOT not S-off and so on. Just to be able to use some root requiring applications like DSP Manager or Adds free.
1. So I've downloaded and installed Android SDK.
2. Started ADB
3. "adb devices" gave me the proper answer
4. Then I've copied and started psneuter and misc_vesion:
adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp
adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell
/data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.33.405.5
exit
5. Then I've tried to root the phone:
Ive copied the required files:
adb install AndroidTerm.apk
adb push busybox /data/local/tmp/
adb push gfree /data/local/tmp/
adb push rage /data/local/tmp
adb push root /data/local/tmp/
adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/*
adb push su /sdcard/
adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/
And then from the Terminal Emulator I've entered
/data/local/tmp/root
I've got some messages that the everything is read only so I've tried rage first:
/data/local/tmp/rage
I've got the proper "Forked #### childs" output
and then I've tried the "/data/local/tmp/root" again. But I'm getting the "cannot fork" message.
I'm new in this stuff s please help me. What do I do wrong?
I only want the simple root access I don't want to downgrade my phone and install any custom roms.
Please help.
ps. my "compilation number" is: 1.72.405
As far as I remember your supposed to flash 1.34 Rom after changing the version number to 1.33 as the rooting is only possible via 1.34 Rom and not 1.72 Rom .... And you clearly missed that step .... Open desire z wiki and read the psneuter guide ... Follow it word for word .... You will root your phone

Just out of curiosity, if you only want to root to use some applications and such, why don't you just temp root using visionary and just redo it whenever you restart your phone?

hispeedworm - I don't want to downgrade my phone. I don't need it and I don't want to loose whole the settings and apps and start from the beginning just for using some special apps.
mmduluth - I've used the visionary method from this topic while it seemed the easiest one for the beginner. However after taping the "TempRoot Now!" the VISIONary+ seemed to hang. The screen was black for several minutes.
So I've decided it does not work.
Anyway, I'd prefer to have permanent root than a temp one for example for using "autostarts" - which as far as I'm concerned works AFTER rebooting the phone.
So anyone could tell me where is a mistake in what I did?
I suppose I've omitted one thing in former trials so I've tried to root it again.
After entering the Terminal Emulator I've run rage:
/data/local/tmp/rage
I've got the Forked #### childs message so everything was ok till then.
Then I've reset terminal --> menu-->reset term
And then I've run the terminal again.
I should get the # sign but what I get is the totally white screen with no possibility to write any command. It's not responding. I can only get out from it by pressing the home button.
So what's going wrong?

If you read enough threads/post, at the moment, the only way to gain permaroot is to downgrade your ROM. Unless, somebody finds a way to do it without the need to downgrade.
And, as I understand, using Visionary apps would cause damage to your device. Be careful!
Cheers...
Thank you silverwind. Now it's clear.
So anyone is working on this?
Cheers

adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp
I get this message:
cannot stat 'psneuter': No such file or directory
I then tried to push the same file if i added .txt at the end of psneuter.
This still did not work.
I then typed cd [directory] and tried it (without .txt) and it still did not work.
I then tried it with .txt and it works.
So i had to cd the directory and then add the file extension? Guessing this isn't normal, but i could deal with it.
However when i got to the third line, i don't know the file extension of misc_version, so i was unable to continue. Can anyone shed some light please? What am i doing wrong or what haven't i done?
Thanks

adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version

Sounds like you didn't set your path; either set a path to adb or make sure all the files are in the same directory of adb and run the commands from that directory

i thought i did set a path though. and it doesn't explain why i need to add the file extension...or is that normal?
can you remind me how to set a path please? i went to computer and path>edit then added the directory of platform-tools and tools to the list. is that all thats needed? where should i save the files such as psneuter?
thanks
All I do is rip out the needed adb files and put them in a folder on my dekstop. Then you can push the files you need to your device.

Sounds like you added the path correctly; if you did, you should be able to run adb from anywhere. It doesn't matter where the files are on your computer, what matters is that you're running the commands from that folder.
For example, if all the files are in C:\root_files then when you open up a command prompt, you need to type 'cd C:\root_files', hit enter and then run the adb commands from there.

Can you not drag and drop the files into the terminal in Windows like you can on Mac?
thanks for all the comments. will have another go tomorrow.
i made another thread but no one has answered, my desire z is running android 2.2.1. do i need to downgrade to 2.2, then 1.74, then 1.34 to root it, or can i go straight from 2.2.1 to 1.34?
Thanks
The 2.2.1 is android version, not sense version.
You need to downgrade to 1.34 sense version, which is also running 2.2 I think.

i solved the above problem but now have a new problem.
After i typed "adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter"
to try and get temporary root, i got this message: /data/local/tmp/psneuter: permission denied
I googled about a bit and tried another command:
C:\Root_Files>adb shell
adb server is out of date. killing...
* daemon started successfully *
$ cd /data/local/tmp
cd /data/local/tmp
$ chmod 0755 psneuter
chmod 0755 psneuter
$ ./psneuter
./psneuter
property service neutered.
killing adbd. (should restart in a second or two)
Then tried adb shell again.
It granted me root access, but i figured i'd try and stick to the tutorial i was on.
so i went back and typed adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter again, and now i get this message:
mmap() failed. Operation not permitted
however if i typed "adb shell" i get #.

HELP!!!! Cannot update FTV manually

Tried these steps
Connect to your Fire TV using ADB
(If you don’t know how, follow up to Step 4 Part 2 in our Windows or Mac guide)
Run the command: adb shell
Run the command: su
(If this is the first time you’ve ever run su, a pop-up will appear on the Fire TV, select Grant)
Run the command: chmod 777 /cache
Run the command: chmod 777 /cache/recovery
Run the command: cd /cache/recovery
Run the command: echo “--update_package=/cache/update.zip” > command
Run the command: exit
Run the command (yes, again): exit
Run the command: adb push update.zip /cache
(This assumes the update.zip file you renamed in step 2 is in the same directory as adb, otherwise enter the full path to the file like adb push C:\full\path\to\update.zip /cache)
Once the update.zip file has finished transferring to the Fire TV, run the command: adb reboot recovery
The update.zip file is on the same folder where the adb platform-tools is located, but when I enter the full path it says no such file or directory.
Mine looks like this C:\Users\XXX\platform-tools>adb push update.zip /cache
What am I doing wrong, please help
CD to the directory first . then enter adb push update.zip /cache

when you push a file with adb, the file must be in the same folder/path you're running the adb command from. From your example, you need update.zip on your PC at C:\users\Stevie G\platform-tools\
The error is saying the file isn't at that path.

might have issues with the space in Stevie G, try a folder without spaces.
