I just got my Redmi Note 5 (global) and no manual, not even online? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Questions & Answers

Well, I got my Redmi Note 5 Global (model #: M1803E7SH) just a couple of hours ago and was shocked that there was no manual or documentation for it, not even online! WTF? Never heard of this before. Packaging looked cheap, and after updating the OS I've already encountered a bug - when I run the Compass program in Tools it superimposes the camera viewfinder over the compass, even obscures it unless I tilt the phone in landscape mode then the compass shows on screen. Nothing major but first impressions can mean a lot. Where can I get documentation for the M1803E7SH? Or does Xiaomi expect us to just know everything intuitively? I'm getting my Red Pocket SIM within the next couple of days and I hope not to discover anymore surprises. A slightly disappointing start.

It's $200 phone what did you expect? If you want manual for your phone you can buy a low spec phone that is worst for the higher price. Then you will get noob friendly manuals and tutorials maybe even a CD LOL!

Important and to late for you since you updated the rom read this thread: -
Everything About Anti Roll-back [Whyred]
Also read some more threads on these forums or the Xiaomi Reddit Wiki.
And maybe the official forums (filled with one line stupid posts).
And for user manual have not download it myself, it maybe just the slip of paper that came in the box.

To corkiejp:
"anti-rollback" sounds ominous, like I hit some terrible point of no return when I updated. Thanks, I'll read the topic(s). I find the phone fast and snappy so at least there's that. Maybe even faster than my Asus ZenPad, which had terrible battery management. Fingerprint lock scanner works perfectly. I half-expected to get locked out of my own phone on the first day due to major malfunction. or gargantuan bug. lol.
Yeah, I don't think there's a manual for this... anywhere. Your link points to a "Coming Soon!" place holder. I'll just have to read a bunch of online sources. Pathetic that we the users have to write the documentation for Xiaomi for one of their own products.
To that smart-ass posting above you: for $200, it's madness not to expect at least some kind of manual or Quick Start guide. Don't know where he gets his logic from that for $200 you shouldn't expect a manual :silly:
ETA: Also wanted to add an example of why there should be a manual for this. I can just imagine all the poor bastards that chased their tails for hours wondering why they couldn't get the procedure for registering a Fingerprint Lock working. It's just not particularly intuitive that you have to press the damn thing TWELVE times and wiggle your finger to get it to work. Easily the most poorly documented device I have ever purchased. Sh*t, even my cheap chinese $5 digital meat thermometer had a detailed manual in the box, on paper no less. But my $200 smart phone doesn't. Go figure.

RN5 is a smartphone, it was main for smart people.

"RN5 is a smartphone, it was main for smart people."
Not-so-smart answer though. I already cited an example of why we would could use a manual, but I guess you missed that, chief.

Lmao, people will cry over everything these days. Its a freaking android device, like any other. You get a little paper explaining hardware and buttons, and its written clearly: Press and hold power button to turn on the device, then follow on screen instructions. Thats why there is a startup guide when you use the phone for first time. Everythings explained more than simple. If you cant follow that, maybe smartphone is not for you. And i congratulate xiaomi for not wasting paper on this matter. Your rant about fingerprint is also absurd, everything is explained very clearly on screen instructions. Jeez, talk about being dramatic

Yes, after you press it TWELVE times it will eventually tell you to wiggle your finger after giving you countless fail/error messages.

Well, I'm assuming you only use your phone to talk/text, browse a few webpages, and take not-so-pretty selfies, but some of us might want a little more detailed info on what this phone can actually do. And the phone can do a LOT, having features that probably 99% of end users aren't even aware of, thanks to virtually ZERO guidance provided by Xiaomi. The bottom line is we shouldn't have to go looking all over the web to compile our own documentation.

Btw, for comparison, I have a cheap, rock-bottom-of-the-line, $25 (USD) Unimax U673c android SmartPhone that had excellent documentation in the form of a PDF manual. But I guess it's okay if some of you guys don't find the lack of a manual curious. Your needs are probably few, and some of you probably can barely read anyway, so...
And I just wanted to say Thank You to corkiejp for being helpful and polite among a bunch of bozos whose only way of being able to communicate seems to be through snark. Have a great day. I'm outta here.

Dude, just stop. You are alone on this matter. Every single post in this thread disagree with you. You are drama queen over nothing. And i use my phone to its full potential, obviously more than you do, because i never needed any papers telling me how to add fingerprint lmao. Now that i think about it, im quite sure there wasnt any paper manuals in my atleast last 2 devices also. Just some simple instructions on how to remove sim tray or stuff like that. There is a FIRST STARTUP GUIDE on android for a reason. It couldnt be more simple. And this was my first ever MIUI phone, so i wasnt really familiar with this OS, yet somehow i understand all its functions. Maybe because whenever you enter some function menu from settings, you get a neat little guide on what its purpose is or an option called "about", which does same thing - explain how it works in short.

Half of your posts in this thread are insults against other members, talking about being polite... Joker. You are not right, you are not a majority, not a single person here gives a **** about paper manual, no one agrees with you, and you are not better than any members here who may have insulted your dramaqueen personality, because you spit insults in half of your posts here.

Your meat thermometer is a single-function device and as such easy to write a manual for. A 'smart' phone - in other words, a pocket computer which happens to include mobile connectivity - is none of the above. The role of the manual has been largely taken over by on-screen instructions, your example of fingerprint enrolment is demonstrative in this respect as it tells you what to do while you do it. You might as well get used to this as the chance of finding a comprehensive manual for software which is updated every other week is getting smaller and smaller. If you want a phone with a manual you're better off with a feature phone as those, due to their less ephemeral nature, can be described in full for the duration of their lifetime which is measured in years.

I actually only insulted two people in this topic - you and that other idiot who could barely manage to get out a single sentence. Stop exaggerating. If I wish to think you're a douche for your asshole tone in replying to my posts, then that's my prerogative. Most of the people here have actually replied to my rant in a polite, reasonable way. And then there's the douches, they're on every forum of course, who I treat as they treat me. Congratulations. You got what you sowed. So take your own advice and just STFU.

You insulted 3 people actually. How many posts there was? So saying half of your posts are insults is not an exaggeration. And you made fun of one user because of his grammar. Really? Are you an american? Because thats only country in the world i know of who are self entitled and stupid enough to make fun of someones second or even third spoken language..You must be an american. Only people in the world who speak 1 language and think they are smart. Pathetic. Sadly only douchebag i see here is you, and not only that, but dumb enough to not understand very clear on screen instructions lmao. Nice try, go read some paper manuals of your meat termometer, maybe that will help you understand smartphones better lol.

Again, just proving the stereotype americans are dumb. You cant even adress single point i make, because you know im right. Calling someone dumb because they can speak slightly broken second language, when your sorry ass cant even do that. Crying nonsense about some paper manuals, when majority of OEMs stopped providing them. Not being able to follow the most simple instructions on screen. Calling me childish when you infact just spit nonsense, insults, and change subject every post, what a mature person! And finally assuming im indian for some reason, and spending whole paragraph trying to insult indians, when im in fact from europe lmao. You should re-read my original posts instead of going off half-cocked again. Where does it say I need a paper manual? PDF documents are just as good. So your homework for now is to go back and re-read my posts and stop stupidly obsessing on the "paper" thing. Then we can continue this conversation, else I'll just continue to assume you have poor reading comprehension and/or debating skills. Just in case you need it written more clearly: I. Don't. Need. SPB Clone - Nag Screen Removal

SPB Clone is a fine bit of software. It makes a full ghost copy of your BA that you can reinstall after a hard reset - all the registry settings, installed software. etc.
The demo version is fully working but after installing via a clone you get a nag screen that continually pops up to remind you to buy the software.
Because I was so impressed with SPB Clone, I wrote to SPB to ask them if they could provide me with a single user licence at a less painful price, since the PDA I was cloning was actually my phone, and I'm not a big company with many PDAs. They told me that, sadly, SPB Clone was only available on an enterprise licence but then they told me how to remove the nag screen....
1. Open the folder \Windows\StartUp in File Explorer.
2. Tap and Hold and select View All Files.
3. Select bootupdt.exe and select Cut from context menu.
4. Change to the root folder "\" and tap and hold on the empty space within folder view. Select Paste from context menu.
5. Soft reset.
6. Remove bootupdt.exe from the root folder.
And you were not able to find this out yourself?
Last year when I had my tires changed the clerk put a sign on my inner mirror to come back in 50km. And there was of course an ad on the sticker. Your post is like "Hey, today I opened my car and pulled the sticker of the mirror. You won't believe: I've got clear sight again!"
Nice of you to repay their generosity by putting this information in the public domain...
@tintoy: Generosity? I consider this being spam. Nobody wants new posts about "I now know how to reboot!" or "My how-to: Plugging USB cable in". I would accept those kinda posts if he'd just tell about product X, which is cheaper than Y but has same or more features like A, B, C. Only hassle you have to solve is to remove [filename] from autostart.

Oh, well I'm terribly sorry that my lo-tech post offends your obviously tender, high-brow sensibilities.
God help you if someone with less knowledge than you asks you a question face-to-face; I'd imagine they'd deck you with an attitude like yours.
Try and remember that there are, in fact, some people that don't know as much about a subject as you and that, to them, as it was to me, a tip like this is very useful, although it's obviously far, far beneath someone who is clearly an IT deity. Please allow me to prostrate myself before you - in fact, I'm genuflecting before my monitor even now!

Do you guys know how tired the rest of us are of this kind of non-productive grade school banter? I am waiting for the "your momma" insults to start any minute. Can someone please delete this thread.
The original post in this thread was a useful piece of information on how to remove the nag screen on a piece of software.
It was not a "How-to" on rebooting or plugging in a USB cable, and i am sure that anyone who wants to use the SPB Clone would be grateful for this information.
The fact that you either didnt understand what the post was about or didnt care doesnt mean you have to immediately flame the poster, if you have no use for the information in a certain thread just move on to the next thread. Trading insults back and forth is the biggest spam anyone could expect to see in a forum, especially this one, which provides so much good information to those of us who use these devices.
I continue to be floored by people's casual attitude toward trading software keys, hacking apps, and getting around nag screens. If the developer did not want you to see the nag screen then he/she WOULD NOT HAVE PUT IT THERE. If the developer gave instructions to one user on how to remove the nag, then great...what a nice developer/company. But unless they expressly gave that person permission to post it out to potentially thousands of people then it is JUST PLAIN WRONG. There is no gray area here, folks. Most of us have to live in a grown-up world and are tired of the impacts that other people's adolescent, situational ethics imposes on us. Do unto others...

I agree with you on the ethics of "stealing" software, my main complaint here was the instant flaming that madcapmagician received after posting, that is not what this community is about. he was not posting a "how-to" on the process of rebooting, he was relaying the information given to him as he received it, i think that the information can be used by those who are ok with "stealing" software and those who disagree can just disregard the information. If the mods decide that the information shouldnt be here they have the power to remove it.
Forgive me for carrying on with this ridiculous and pointless conversation but is it not in fact illegal to unlock contract mobile phones? Would the cellular providers be happy for 1000's of people to remove their branding and software from devices which they have sold? If the software company had not wanted to help the individual then they would not have told him to start with. I am sure that nobody is so special that a software company would whisper information into his ear that they didn't want to be made common knowledge.
This is a tech support forum, it has helped me as well as many, many other people. If you want to start talking about wrong, immoral, illegal or any other description you may have then start looking at what other people are doing.
I appreciate this forum, and it's members. For crying out loud, stop arguing and get on with the job in hand.
Zylo, I agree with you in one regard. The post is perfectly legit insomuch as it is helpful and technically related. But only for people without a conscience. Bret, you are symptomatic of this new generation of kids with no personal accountability in life. To pretend that you can guess that a software company doesn't mind you giving away their software for free is ludicrous. madcap probably got ahold of some sales guy who thought it would be nice to do him a favor. Do you think the owners, investors or developers would have told him to feel free to post it on forums around the internet? Why not take that info and sell it for a profit on eBay? Or better yet why not just sell the software as your own? If they were giving you a free copy then they wouldn't mind you doing whatever you want with it. Right? You see, you keep blurring the lines of common decency to the point where eventually anything goes. You won't understand until someday you actually become a responsible citizen, start your own business, and put your hard-earned money and time out on the line. I bet when the leeches and thieves come after your product you will have a whole different attitude. The "right thing" to do in this case is so easy and obvious. I fear for a world where people can't make that distinction.
Sorry if what i said came across as a flaming. It was not intended as such. I'm just aware that softweare companies have many employees, from designers to developers to marketing people to managers. Of all these people the ones who seeme to have the most alturistitc (read non commercially-minded) approach always seem to be the developers. They are typically just concerned with writing good software and makng it work. If you asked a developer for a free copy of his/her software for 'testing' they'd probally give it to you without complaint! If, however, you asked them if they'd like their contract to end at the end of its term becuase you were going to make the software they wrote completly unprofitable by telling everyone how to get it for free they might be slightly less generous!
Your points have been taken on board but for the record, I work for a small, local mobile phone dealer. How much business do you think we lose from people unlocking phones, and therefore not returning to us?
I'm not saying that is right or wrong but what I am saying is that it is illegal. It is stealing from the provider and taking profits away from independant dealers. Also, how are you to know that my own business did not fail due to non-payers? You obviously open your mouth before engaging your brain. I could not recover the debts owed to my company and it resulted in the business closing. Is that not also theft?
If you want to target anyone go for the real criminals who sell ripped off software and DVD's on the Sunday markets. They are the real problem, not one guy who has made a very small post who has admitted to have lttle understanding of what he has done. I'm sure you have now all alienated him so he will never return to this site again.
Talk about a mountain out of a molehill.
Yeah. Can we consider this conversation over?
Please don't be offended by my posts @madcapmagician, I was just making a point, not trying to demonise you! I would imagine there is even a fairly decent discsussion that could be had about what consitutes ripping off software and what consitutes fair use...

Subject: Clone
Dear Sir or Madam,
I recently downloaded your demo of Clone and have to say that, already, it has served me well after my phone required a hard reset the other day.
I was so impressed that I decided to purchase a copy but was absolutely horrified to see the price of $199. Whilst I can appreciate that Clone is suited to large businesses with many corporate PDAs, I am a single user - the PDA in question is actually my HTC Blue Angel mobile phone - and I was wondering whether you could sell me a single-licence version for a price more similar to what you charge for Pocket Plus?
If this is not possible could you tell me how long the annoying reminder screen will continue to pop up on my phone?
I look forward to your reply.
Regards,
Jerzy Bulowski
Hello Jerzy,
Spb Clone is enterprise product and there's not any "single user" licenses.
How to remove the nag screen in your case:
1. Open folder \Windows\StartUp in File Explorer. 2. Tap and Hold and select View All files. 3. Select bootupd.exe and select Cut from context menu. 4. Change to the root folder "\" and tap-n-hold on the empty space within folder view. Select "Paste" from context menu. 5. Soft reset. 6. Remove bootupd.exe from the root folder.
Best regards,

Bret, perhaps I should point out that you can download SPB Clone for free from their website, as a demo version. Corporate customers, if they liked it, would then buy a licensed copy for $199.00 – I have “stolen” nothing.
Chris - As far as the ethics of posting said information in the public domain are concerned, my conscience is clear. This information is for single users, like myself. If an unscrupulous company wishes to make use of this information then it’s their ethics that are at fault, not mine.
Tintoy – I’m not offended. It was Chatty’s immediate, condescending, demeaning post that riled me. Zylograth said what I should have, instead of replying as I did:
The fact that you either didn’t understand what the post was about or didn’t care doesn’t mean you have to immediately flame the poster, if you have no use for the information in a certain thread just move on to the next thread.

And that’s that!
AFAIK I think it's still open to debate whether we discuss cracking. I'm happy to talk about cracking, but not cracks.
Odeean makes a good point that cracking and reversing is part of the education of programming; if you're a commercial developer, or would be one, it's worth knowing weaknesses and pitfalls.
People shouldn't come on here and say "wantttt - crack for thai-g" etc. That's just silly and damn lazy. If you don't know how to get warez, you should be using a Motorola, not even a Nokia. But you should be rewarding programmers, or you should understand when there aren't programmers left to program because they've all gone broke. (And I'm not just talking about cash.. we don't all program for the $$)
But if you want to learn how to crack thai-g, search, ask nicely, or learn and tell. But don't distribute cracks (at least publically). There are other boards for that, and we have enough trouble keeping this board clean enough now-a-days

Take it like a man!
Madcap, my almost 3-year old daughter tries to make equally bad logic when I have caught her sneaking a cookie before supper. If you were in court you would be your own worst enemy. The email from spb said "How to remove the nag screen in YOUR case". Not "in your case and EVERY other person you can broadcast it to". Show me where he added, "And please feel free to share this with other single users". ONCE AGAIN, if they did not expressly permit you to give this to other people then it is just plain wrong! No, not illegal...it's the spb CSR's ignorant fault for giving it out to you. Let's say you are standing behind a guy in line at the QuickTrip. You witness the cashier ring up his order, but forget to ring up his Snickers bar. When the customer makes the cashier aware of the error, the cashier says,"Oh that's ok, just go ahead and take it." Does that then give you the right to grab a Snickers bar and put it in your pocket without paying for it? If one person got a freebie then everyone should get it, right? How long do you think QuickTrip will survive giving away it's products? It really isn't any different. Software is intangible property that should be treated as tangible. Just because you can get away with it doesn't mean you should. It is just like all of the thieves who thought downloading music they did not pay for was OK. It wasn't...still isn't...never will be.
As for your equally weak argument of, "If an unscrupulous company wishes to make use of this information then it’s their ethics that are at fault, not mine." Let's take the same QuickTrip. While you are at the counter paying for your snacks (except for the Snickers bar tucked into your pocket), you oversee another employee opening the safe behind the counter. Because of your excellent eyesight and brilliant mind, you see and remember the combination. When you get home you go out to the SafesAndVaultsDevelopers.com forums and post about the dummy at QuickTrip opening up the safe right in front of everyone. You also post the combination to the safe because "if an unscrupulous person wishes to make use of this information then it’s their ethics that are at fault, not mine." Great logic. I wish I could send you to time-out like I can my daughter.
Try this. Reply back to spb. Tell that same Customer Service Rep that you are posting this hack on all of the popular PDA sites on the internet. And copy the support group at spb, too. After they respond to you, post their letter back here. I will be waiting to see the response.
Now I know you would never have posted the above spb info on a site where you thought "unscrupulous" people could visit and get hold of it. I mean, what jerk in their right mind would do that to a company and possibly expose them to real dollar losses? So since you know everyone here is trustworthy, why don't you go ahead and post your email account password, your xda forum password, and the PIN to your ATM account on here. Throw in your momma's phone number for grins. We won't do anything bad with it.
Am I going off on you? Yes. When someone tries to make a clearly black and white argument grey, and aggressively attempts to defend that indefensible position over and again, they deserve to be called out. Take it like a man.

[Q] Survival apps for when TSHTF?

I have smart tools, most handy thing out of that is the compass basically.
So im asking, what are the best survival apps?
Im no conspiracy nut, but it doesn't take a genius to realize the earth is going through stuff it never has before.
Survival apps meaning:
Any guides (i already have the US army & Navy guides)
Any tools that utilizes the Epic's tech (i.e compass, solar wind activity)
If we do not already, someone needs to start coding some serious apps.
Also, if anyone knows of any good ad-hoc programs for when cell towers go down.
Having a nice shiny phone wont mean **** when the cell towers go down.
Take this seriously, please.
When the towers go down and all that madness starts happening, how do you plan on charging your shiny phone?
Edit: As snide a response as this is, I'm being serious. There's better ways to be prepared.
In all seriousness, anything a smartphone can do (assuming network infrastructure is kaput) is better done with a purpose built tool. If TSHTF, you really think a day or two of battery life is gonna cut it?
Better to get a standalone analog compass, a good set of maps, and a decent Yaesu HT ham radio. No reason to reinvent the wheel.
(Unless you want to play Angry Birds)

I just thanked you when i meant to quote lol, off to a great start. As for your "response", no ****.
**** hits the fan, you have a phone for 2-3 MAX, what apps are you gonna have that will help you?
You think i assume our Epics are gonna be solar charged or something?
So again, 2-3 days max...what apps are going to be the most helpful?
EDIT: If you're going to state the obvious (phone dying) then dont bother posting, im fully aware of
that as its the big pink elephant in the room.

It's okay. I'm thank-worthy. As much as I love technology and the cool things it can do... I wouldn't really bother. You're a lot better off learning basic things like first aid and having the head knowledge than being reliant on anything. Also, it's awfully optimistic to hope for more than 24 hours max if you ask me.

Lol, you're an interesting fellow -- interesting is the nicest word I can think of at the moment.
I have everything else covered, dry meals, water filters, i have enough first aid kits to aid a village. I have much more aid that i wont list as it comes from ex-military friends, trust me when I say I have everything else covered.
So again, when TSHTF, what are the most useful apps?
I cant even believe im trying to explain to you the importance of having survival apps on your phone, feel like im taking crazy pills or something.
EDIT: and no, you are not thank worthy -- not even close. Please abandon the thread if you continue to think small small-mindedly, on the other hand
if you want to contribute, please do.
They have solar chargers for laptops which will hold over 10 full cellphone charges and require something like 10 hours of sunlight to get those 10 full charges. With them, you could charge your cell phone as fast as you could with a normal power adapter from the wall.
I think they also have $50 range solar chargers which would hold about 3-4 cell phone charges, and get your cell phone charged fully in 3-4 hours from sunlight or from the built-in battery.
I'll take a stab at a serious reply for ya...
Other than a compass, obviously... A GPS program with pre-downloaded maps might come in handy, something like Gaia GPS, perhaps, where you can get maps with hiking trails listed. I figure if something happens to take out the satellites, you probably wouldn't be around to worry about much else!

So, let me get this straight. You shoot people to get directions?
Gotta love 'em rednecks.
Thanks Nabbed & Dalmus, will definitely look into both of those.
As for the others, the ignorance is amazing.
Ill list some of my own if anyone didnt already know about them:
BrightestFlashlight
U.S. Army Survival Guide
U.S. Navy Seal Training Guide (which i downloaded & loaded onto my phone w/ a pdf reader)
Boskoi (utilizes google maps (albeit if its still up) to show you ALL edible sources around you, nuts, fruits, berries, even fungi.
ICE: In Case of Emergence (shows you First & Local responders (police stations, hospitals) and also gives you information on allergies, specific medical conditions,
how to treat someone who is unconscious, ect.
Also remember, if you have some steel wool & enough tinder you can start a fire with your own battery.
Small-minded thinking gets you nowhere, open-minded with a dash of doubt is most important.
Not just outright "Oh you think you're phone will save you?"

The right approach would be to think, wow we really do need some handy apps.
I'd code everything myself and not ask a single question but I obviously dont have that knowledge so instead I have to take a gamble, post on here -- & get nothing but ignorant responses.

I'm not sure how my post was ignorant at all, I was kind of thinking the same about this entire thread. This belongs somewhere, yes, but not here. At least take it over to the themes and apps section... And no I don't think we need apps of this kind. If I was worried about something happening, I'd get actual tools designed (and much better) to solve these problems than my cell phone.

It's called a map and compass for directions. Gun to hold onto my shiny cell phone that I will wear around my neck as a trophy because that's all it will be good for.
If your really looking for a serious note on this and I am still confused why you'd rely on a cell phone when things go down but I'd get all the guides, local maps, points in interest I.e. police stations, military bases, hospitals and load them into PDF files then save them on your phone so you can have all the info ready. No cell reception required.

You'd be much better served with a glock. If you want to shoot bandits in the case of a national emergency, a handgun trumps the rifle.
Also, you seem to be confused, friend. If you are going up against a totalitarian government, then a rifle is a good choice. A handgun is much better in the case of riots. Your confusion seems to stem from the misinterpretation of the Second Amendment. You see, you can fight against injustice with a rifle, but a handgun is much more useful in case of civil disobedience.
I have to repeat these obvious truths 3 times over because rednecks really don't think for themselves.

Lol your a tool box good sir. This thread went from worthless to just silly. Who is talking about fighting the government, riots or second amendment. Apparently your idea of $hit hitting the fan is way different then most. This went from joking around to you getting mad. Why so mad?
I'll make it even simpler, a pistol for CQB/CQD and a rifle for anything past that. Take your smugness somewhere else, it doesn't really add much here.

Siri vs Tellme

Well, nothing like a stroll through memory lane every once in a while.
To get things started here is an article talking about Siri useage. This is an interesting exact from the article:
"Making phone calls and sending text-messages are the most popular activities, according to the report, a sign that Siri usage is mirroring how people use their phones more generally. Roughly a third of 4S owners use Siri to place phone calls, send text messages, or look up information daily or almost daily."
In other words, people are using Siri to do what every Android and Windows phone does, and does quite well already.
Now to go back to this thread titled "Windows phone lost another to Siri".
So, let us face it... Android and Windows Phone have voice recognition software that can accomplish exactly what most people are using Siri to do right now. The rest is fluff. I know I went on record saying I can see why someone would want to say "Call John" but I cannot for the life of me see the point in some of the other "Knock Knock... Who is there?" things.
If everyone rode their bike straight from home, to work, and back home... we would never have learned backflips are possible.
Thank goodness for some fluff in life.

Okay, let us run with the analogy. Why then are people in that thread somehow trying to paint the picture that backflips are an important and useful part of riding a bike?
If you read through that thread (you made some appearances in there) some people believed Siri was the greatest thing ever. Backflips certainly are not the greatest thing to happen to bike riding...
I said it before and I will say it again, Siri as advertised is a gimmick.

I got this at least 3 times.
Continuing the analogy..
I asked 3 different people riding different coloured but the same bike "How did you end up spending so much money on your bike?"
The answer I got, though worded differently by each rider, can be summerized as "Because I can do backflips all the way to work and then also when I go back home, I do backflips after backflips".
the point that you guys don't see: People love to own stuffs that they don't even use them regularly. They just love to have them so if they need them (and probably never) they can use it. It is just a common thinking of people.
I know some people who just use phone for calling and texting only, and they have an Android Smartphone just to make some calls and send some message a day... And they are so proud of their phones because they have thousand of apps (i hardly ever see they use more than 3 apps) and ... fast...
It is just like money, some people really live to save up big money and hardly ever buy anything which is not necessary. It is just a good feeling when you have a lot of money in your pocket, same with the functions of siri.
Or just like me, who hardly ever have to drive around, feel terrible because my phone can't acquire the GPS signal to track down where i am . So you can't really blame people for that. lol.

I understand what you are saying and take your point. Just remember I am have no problem with people wanting something they are not going to use. My issue here is not with the average consumer, it is with the technically inclined people who defended Siri as something that would somehow change the way people interact with their phones.
So far touchscreens have changed the game times over what Siri has done.
No contest: Siri all the way.
I used a test phone at a best buy, and it picked up my voice saying "make me an appointment for Tuesday at 2pm". No problem at all.
I can barely get TellMe to properly display "are you coming home". Takes like 4 tries.

(i rarely go back and read old threads, so i'll trust there was fun stuff there)
of course, a lot of the usefulness will depend on the user and the commands given. user input will dictate just how useful any application is. backflips, triple backflips, or just a blind man getting to 'drive' to taco bell.
the creativity that is possible, or requests posed to the maker of the app may do something revolutionary. maybe.

It went on for 11 pages so you can bet it was a barrel of monkeys It was more or less a debate about Siri with some people being skeptical (me), in the middle, or totally swimming in the koolaid river.
My fundamental problem with Siri being used as an effective method of interacting with a phone is the effort outweighs the action. I share this same skepticism with using a kinect + windows 8 as a method of navigation (a keyboad and mouse just is a better tool).
Anyway, it is clearly a user preference thing. Some people will make it useful and fit into their lives. I can't help but think Siri is Apple's way of sticking with a crappy static UI instead of going with a more dynamic one that can display more information on the home screen(s).
I don't know if this is still true, but the last time my sister and I compared her iPhone 4s to my WP7 is that hers can't read a messages and reply using hand free. I use tellme when I need as little or no hand interaction with my phone, like driving. If this is still true, this is where tell me trumps siri....reason my sister has WP7 envy.
Anyone use Ask Ziggy in the Marketplace yet? Supposed to be similar to Siri.
I use Tellme to send texts, and my friends (all of them, ha ha) have Siri. While we do the same things with them, I have noticed they have higher accuracy with the voice to text than I do. I've held an iphone side by side to my focus and said a message to both at the same time. Siri gets it right while my focus misses a few words. The added functionality of Siri doesn't matter a bit to me because I'd never use it, but when I try to send a message saying "yes ma'am" to my mom and Tellme decides to send "yes mammoth" it makes for a righteous laugh but also shows room for improvement.
Is TellMe a separate app than the one that is voice recognition built into the Messaging App?

No, TellMe is the built in one.
reminds me of a time when my friends and i were comparing Siri and TellMe, neither could send a message properly without 4/5 tries. maybe the phone don't do asian accents too well XD
but recently it's gone a lot better on my phone, imo

I'm not a siri hater (I think it's really neat) but I can't stop laughing when Stern tries to use it on his radio show and it fails at EVERYTHING he tries. It must not understand his voice well or something. He hates the damn thing.

The thing about TellMe, and Siri (I'm sure), is the tone of voice and sound matter. I speak quickly, so my device doesn't quite get what I say. But, when I'm a bit more sing-songy, it works much better. Let the tones move up and down with the words.
When saying "yes, ma'am" to my Lumia 800 right now, I got "yes maam" as what it captured. Not too bad.

And it is a bad thing if you have to move away from your natural speaking manner in order to get what you need done. I believe there is a place for certain interactions, where these inputs are best suited.
A keyboard and a mouse is best suited to complete a majority of tasks on a personal computer as it is designed now.
Touch (and multitouch) inputs work best in a flat architecture where the user wants to expand a selection. For example a grid of icons on a screen where these icons take you to your final destination (launching a game). Touch inputs really fall down when you take several steps towards a destination, or have to drill down to get what you want, for example start -> documents -> tax returns 2012 -> open excel sheet.
This is how I feel about voice control. Too much work to complete certain functions.

I disagree in that how we speak absolutely matters. This technology is still pretty new. And the one variable is that few people speak the same way. How good are the softwares at recognizing how we 'mispronounce' things? Take the Siri "Rock God" commercial. The guy on HuffPo who was attempting to debunk the ad didn't use the same diction as the kid did.
The kid clearly stated Rock God. Two separate sounds. The first ending with the same consonant sound that the second begins with. The debunker actually glottalizes the phrase. He closes his gottis on the "ck", so never actually produces the consonant. This is covered by the fact that the second word begins with nearly the same sound as the first ends. So, he gives us "Rockod". This is two sounds combined into one with only a single consonant sound to separate them, when the correct speaking requires two hard sounds.
Also, inflection matters. Given that the English language is based on consonants and hard sounds to close our words, we overlook a lot of the tones/inflections that are always present. Speech recognition needs some of that, I think, to better understand what is being said.
Lastly, all of these types of conversations remind me of a book I read by Jonah Lehrer, called Proust was a Neuroscientist. He breaks down how many artists of their era and modality actually predated matching science. Gertrude Stein, for example, liked to break down language. He mentions her line "a rose is a rose is a rose". She's not talking about roses. She's making the sounds and reorganizing them:
"a rose is a rose is a rose"
"a rose isa rose is arose"
"a roses a rose..."
So, "isa" is a sound, but what does it mean? hehehe
Given the complexity of linguistics and speech recognition, and how quickly I speak, I'm willing to make concessions to help TellMe be more successful in correctly guessing my words. A little more use of tone and proper word start/stops go a long way.
Let's give the tech a few more generations before we start moaning about it. It's not Dragon, after all.

I just downloaded it a few days ago. Initial tests were not terribly impressive. Maybe I just don't know how to ask it things the right way. Often it seems to get a few key words and just starts rambling incoherently. I need to spend more "quality time" with it before I decide whether to keep it or not.
What has your impression been?

I can't be the only one who's noticed that there's a bunch of people on this forum, who for whatever reason seem to be on some kind of campaign. These people are insisting that Note 7 owners must power them off and return them and they take every opportunity to say that the phone is a huge danger and that no only must all handsets be returned, but that the networks and Samsung must block the devices. It goes far beyond the occasional post and the odd comment. It's repeated, vitriolic, aggressive, confrontational and dogmatic.
Fine upstanding citizens these people may be and perhaps they are so motivated to ensure the safety of their fellow humans. But I seriously doubt that. I doubt most of them surely don't care a damn about the safety of other phone users. So what's driving this campaign of vitriol? Why are these people not simply making their point and moving on? Is it because they have surrendered their devices and don't like others still enjoying their Note 7's? is it because they are somehow feeling inadequate and feel the need to demonstrate their superiority?
I can't remember circumstances before where so many self-rightous, sanctimonious vigilantes have sprung up who seem hell bent on TELLING others what they must do.
I'd like to say to all of them, what people do with their own Note 7's is a matter entirely for them, their supplier and their mobile operator. That's it. Beyond that, it's NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.
For those with eyes. IRIS = SIRI, reverse engineering.

On a serious Note, yes there are moles on here. Think different? Think for yourself! If you want to keep your Note 7, then do it! The only "proof" that there ever was a fault was through the media. Remember, the media is not your friend!
Happy to still keep using mine (is slated for swap out to S7E which is not the phone I forked out $1350 for, that is for sure!)
My phone survived a huge cooking with the Oculus dodgy update, so I feel it is one of the good ones
I know some users here who definitely match your discussed behaviour though!

I was actually thinking of making a thread exactly like this.
I, too, have noticed this. I truly think they are former Note 7 owners who wish they'd kept their devices. They know they made the wrong choice giving it up, and are now stuck using a device that has half the features. And as they stare at their crappy phone, they fill with rage that other people still have Note 7s and are enjoying them to the fullest.
Nobody is taking my Note 7 away from me, that's for sure. This device is so far ahead of everything else. It's better than 90% of 2017's devices will be.
I had the exact same thoughts as well. Very unlike XDA forum members, who are in general all about doing whatever they want with their devices, regardless of who says what.
I will be returning mine for a refund at the latest possible moment, since unfortunately the idea of keeping it indefinitely with no future updates and no Oculus support, doesn't work for me.
But it's kind of irrelevant what I will be doing with mine. The point is, it's entirely up to me and I am sick and tired of people who I don't know, nor care to know, telling me THEY know better.

I don't miss mine one bit. Care to keep generalizing? Maybe we just don't want our aircraft cabins filled with toxic fumes from smoldering batteries, as UNLIKELY as an event that may be. I for one don't mind people keeping their N7's. Do what you will. I do find it comical that people with small children in the home are hardcore defending keeping the device, however. Even though the slightest possibility of a device going up in smoke is slim to none, the safety of my family comes first. No amount of iris scanners and expandable storage can make up for a potential fire hazard in the home.
this forum is about people interesred in this device, I got my replacement, and I am happy with it, besides my carrier will keep a one year warranty, so, it is a good deal for me, in my country there is no mandatory recall, so, they can not force anybody to surrender the phone, also by no means , they wont block/deactivate remotely, as it woul be considered against your consumer rights, I started a thread about over sensitive s pen, and only thing I got was "get rid of your note7" in my opinion, this kind of replies defeat the entire purpose of this portal, that is helping and improving, there are lots of people keeping their note7, so, whoever returned, or backed from a note 7, should show some respect to those keeping it

What country are you in out of interest. I'm in the UK and I'm not entirely sure if it's voluntary or mandatory. Also if it is voluntary then we may still get some updates which at the very least means security patches. I hope.

I agree. I was actually an unfortunate Pre-ordered Note 7 customer who never got theirs in time due to the recall and have even posted asking if anyone who has one instead of returning it I would buy it from them. It was ignored by a moderator who in turn replied to the previous poster asking if they had received their 'fireproof' return shipping box.
Either these are shills or are just hypnotized by the recent mass media campaign and genuinely believe the Note 7's are dangerous. Yet you need to question that when you post clear evidence that even today's news is showing iPhones exploding and destroying cars.
People are either brainwashed or are working undercover counter intelligence

I don't plan on taking my personal phone (Note 7 w8) into an airplane. I plan on using my work iPhone for that.
Nor do I have children.
And if all you see is an iris scanner and expandable storage when you look at the Note 7, then this device isn't for you anyways.
Check out the Samsung.com website of your country. To see if the recall is voluntary or mandatory. All sites will ask you to power down and exchange for another Galaxy model ?

I've not posted in the various other threads on this topic but to the starter of this thread, how would you feel if someone posted pretty much what you said but instead of talking about the note 7 it was talking about drinking and driving?
Many of us live in societies with incredible levels of self entitlement. People believing that they are special and rules don't apply to them. It's not really about YOUR safety it's about the safety of people around you. That is the real issue. While some of the people who are keeping their phones may never take it outside their house I don't for a second believe that none of them will take them on planes, subways, etc. Just like drinking and driving you may get away with it for a very long time but it only takes one time to change your life forever. In order to keep a note 7 as normal it requires you to actively circumvent updates from Samsung. If something goes wrong and someone dies there will be no "I didn't realize" defense. You absolutely will be going to jail.
As for myself I surrendered my note 7 yesterday. I was sad to see such a great phone go to waste but I have no regrets. I respect my safety and that of others around me too much to take a risk. I fly frequently and don't need any headaches like this.
I don't for a second think that Samusung is taking this **** kicking, both financially and to their reputation for fun. I think it's wise to heed their advice and replace the phone.

Thanks.
EDIT: Sorry I missed your question. The answer is, the two are not comparable. Drinking and driving is proven to be extremely dangerous. Note 7's are proven to be pretty safe. The issue is that they are not as safe as some people would like, but to compare the levels of risk to that of driving a car whilst drunk, is misleading.
There's already a flight ban in place and people I would imagine are sensible enough to respect that. I know I would. And regards the public safety risk more generally, NO-ONE has suffered serious injury and there have been no deaths out of 4 million units shipped. Worst case, the device is going to catch fire and guess what - people will put it out. The idea that automatically when a phone catches fire then some kind of apocalypse occurs, is also misleading. These are fundamentally fairly safe devices. Samsung however necessarily look at it down the other end of the telescope since they are responsible for all 4 million devices and whereas the chance of you or I having an issue with our phone is very very low, the chances of Samsung having an issue with one of the 4 million of their phones, is very very high. That's why they needed to cancel the phone, not because any one phone is intrinsically dangerous - it is not.
I am of the belief that some, not all, of the owners who returned their Note 7's would be better served with an iPhone anyways. Those are the one's that take a shine toward being dominated in every aspect of their lives.

Unlocking the Bootloader

Hello,
I know this is a long shot but I'm here to ask it. What needs to be done to unlock the bootloader of this device, where would one start? Are there any manuals I'm able to read up on? Is it really a lost cause, if so why?

although I generally encourage tinkering on any and most all levels I think if you have to ask where to start in unlocking a bootloader, it will likely require more input then the output you would get in return. But thats just me. Plus I think the bootloader is secured using a key that only samsung, att, sprint, verizon etc.. have, But I suppose if you get that key you would be off to a good start. Good luck and godspeed!

I'm not necessarily interested in unlocking the bootloader myself, you're right I'm a bit out of my league when it comes to unlocking a bootloader. The key that's it's locked with is more what I'm interested in. I can't find too much info on the net about it, is it AES, SHA, RSA, Symmetric, Asymmetric?
That I do not know. I would guess it would be none of the above. Maybe some thing proprietary and kept uber safe/secret.

You've haven't seen any Samsung Note 8's with an unlocked bootloader. The only place that could be possible would be at the Samsung Headquarters itself. And even so, if there at Samsung Headquarters, the "KEY" would only be available to an extremely limited number of secure employees. Where did you say you saw one that was unlocked?
While ROOT has been established, thanks to a current member here on XDA Forums, currently, no one at this time has been able to unlock the Note 8 bootloader. Any attempts to do so would be a long shot of 1 out of a billion.

I'm confident you haven't misinterpreted my post as my intent was meant to provide positive, constructive, & supportive information. Congratulations on your accomplishments & achievements. It sounds like you stay pretty busy most of the time. I've accomplished 2 masters, (when I was much younger, lol.) 20 years as a SEAL, latter to work in Intellegence/Counter Intellegence.
Respectively & respectfully getting back on topic. In your post, you stated "Surprisingly, there are people who have the note 8 boatloader unlocked. I've have seen it with my own eyes." So my first question is where have you seen the Note 8 bootloader Unlocked & who had it unlocked?
Your other sentence thats confusing is where you stated "These guys obviously don't like to share, unless they get something out of it. He's givin me the tools and pointed me in the right direction." My second question is what guys are you referring to, and who gave you what tools?
If you would answer these two questions, I'm sure it would clean up any confusion in the thread.

Especially when vaporizers started booming.. off topic. Their hasn't been a complex part to come in, where I had to say I can't do it. .001 thou true positions and profile tolerances. .0005 flatness and I first look and don't know where to begin. I eventually get it done. NGNS-(Never give up, never surrender) I think there are some highly intelligent people here. I'm basically trying to find people with ideas with cell phones in general. The cell phone companies are winning no doubt. Much respect, thank you.

If you would answer these two questions, I'm sure it would clean up any confusion in the
I do apologize for all the bad grammer, it's good though I know my homonyms lol. Well I got nothing but respect for you. I could easily tell you're not some 1upper. Who boasts. I have learned most from experience, I think it counts for a lot but not all as some learn at way faster rates than others. I don't have any degree. I did get iso/as9100 compliant. All I have is a custom back cover on my note 8. Doesn't help much when I'm barely understanding all the parts and how they work together inside. If you k ow anyone in my little area I would appreciate.

I call bull ? & MODS NEED 2 CLOSE THIS THREAD. It's akin to me say I'm a 34yo masturbationist, who has close ties in the tantric, hippie & druggie community. I can only tell you the rumors of an orgasm a second are true! I have saw it myself! I begged & was given the tool(s) & vibrated unto the correct path. However I *unt ? it out! I also won't say what words, tools or techniques were shown! TLDR: Seriously any1 can make ? up. The Most Likely Possibility is it was a EXYNOS Note8! Ignorance is bliss. Thought there mayb some hope for the Note8 I stuck back into its box... I thought the LG Oreo screw up might [email protected] helped...

Android Nina, I agree for the majority of the entire community, but there are more sites than I could imagine. I'm talking about what's available to the public. True, it's a super long shot that is damn near impossible, but just because you and and the people around you or anyone for that matter find it a lost cause, doensnt mean
That now one else can. You're are a respectful person, I appreciate that. I wouldn't tell some "no you havnt" that's just assuming from the knowledge you know. Like you said, few people have the key. That knowledge is very powerful and demanding. I'm 34 bro. I grew up in a machine shop staring to leatn since the age of 8 or so. Cbc programming was the first computer language I learned. After 20 years or so, throughout the years I've always was into phone. Yes this is my expertise, and it's a different kind of coding . I've come to understand many computer languages. I was fortunate to make the business grow and we've made good relations with our clients. Boeing, Lockheed M, Spacex, just to name a few. That requires being Asmzs
That led to having a close relations with some very powerful people. Information is the most powerful thing. The only sure wag you can truly keep a secret between 2 people, is by killing on of them. I respect you, but I think it's a little naive to think that the few key holders, and powerful people. I'm a member a a few private sites, it's about knowing the right people. I don't have the bootload unlocked. I'm working on various projects right now, probably the reason I got in. You don't believe it's all good nothing bad. I make for parts for for the aerospace industry that are close tolerance up to 1/0th of 1 thousandth of an inch. Thats .ooo1 Basically take 1 1 1 1 inche, and equally space 10,000 lines in side that on inch. Paying attention to superfine detail Is like second nature. If you want, reply and ask what you wish, I'll show you the removab removable back cover of my note 8, all also show that the rom lost are working, problem is, your looking at Into that's available to the general public.
5-7 axis cnc programmer/machine engineer, computers like second nature, mobile phones obvious, musician, ghost bass and drums, a electrition, addiction specialist, it's a sub specialty. Among many others things. Now, I've been studying cryptography. I have no a degree, I was self taught. I could tell you how just about any medication or drugs and how they work, what receptors,
I.hibitors, Neurotransmitters etc. I'm not writing this to boast and seen cocky, I'm no better than anyone else. I wanted you to see that I'm not just bullshitting like most and id hope you realize, I have a good opportunity. To say somone is smarter than a others makes no sense. I'm sure you many things that I don't, likewise I k ow many things you don't. Sorry for the novel length text. Hope to hear from you, I don't know where you stand but I'm
Sure we can learn from each other.

Jammol sorry for the lag. What I meant by tools is the general info and direction he gave me. May I ask some basic general questions to get a feel of the level you're at?

Lots of intelligent people say they have seen the Loch Ness Monster or the Yeti. But that does not make it true. Evidence makes things facts.
This has nothing to do with your intelligence.
