Preventing data connection - Desire General

I've just received my Desire, and have asked O2 for a new data plan (I used to be on Blackberry). That won't go through until midnight today, and they will charge me £3 mer MB with NO LIMIT until then! So, I need a way to turn data off (apart from WIFI) as soon as I turn the phone on (it's currently charging). I've read some reports of people turning it off, but certain apps turn it on again.
What's the simplest way to do this please, until tomorrow? Thanks!

Hold down the power button until the menu comes up then turn off mobile network.

Ok great, thanks. Yea now I've turned it on, it's pretty obvious.
Is there any chance of an app turning it on again without my knowledge? In some forums people say it can happen, but I THINK that may have been with WinMo.

I've heard of it in the past but not on 2.1, a rogue application maybe but they shouldn't do. It would be pretty easy to notice if you were out of wifi range though as the data icon would appear in the notification bar, your best bet would be to just check on it if you install any app that mentions data in it's software permissions.

Ok I'll do that. I'll also look for an app that'll show me data usage. I know there are some around.
Thanks for your help.

I'm in the same position as you (but my data plan doesn't go live till the 26th! lol), so I set up the phone to WiFi only thanks to the option on the setting screen, and so far it has only connected when I switched on the data toggle. I'll post here if I come across any apps that will connect though.

I've installed a program called NetCounter. It doesn't seem to count Wifi with the Desire (others have had the same problem), but for you and I that doesn't matter. I've got it set to alert me if 'somehow' the phone starts using data from O2. So it's just an extra safeguard. Sorry you have to put up with that until the 26!

I have the same question and I was told APNDroid does it too. Is it better to use APNDroid or the bult-in option?

Just add the widgets for network data, GPS, Wifi to the home screen (I've stuck mine under the clock) easy to turn on and off with single keys presses then rather than holding the power button down. I've also added the bluetooth shortcut but that takes a massive 2 key presses to turn on or off. I've found it useful for saving battery life as well.

He wanted the quickest way after turning it on, holding the power button is quicker than finding and adding those widgets for the first time.

A few quick questions regarding connectivity options

Hi,
My HTC Desire should be arriving in the next few days and I've seen some posts about wifi, bluetooth, gps, 3g being on 24/7. I don't really want this if possible as I prefer to be able to control my connectivity.
The only things I want to update automatically are my gmail account, the weather app and maybe football scores on weekends. Is it possible to just set these items to update every 20mins and have the 3G turn itself off in the mean time?
There is an android power widget which looks great and has 4 great buttons to simply turn wifi, bluetooth, gps and autosynch on or off, oh and one for brightness control. As for 3g, its been advised to leave 3g on nowadays as the power consumption is barely more than gprs so really I wouldn't worry about that.

Thanks, that sounds good. I guess if the power consumption of 3G isn't enough to be too worried about then I don't mind leaving it on.

I hope so, I got a great deal on it too and although I had an iphone for a couple of weeks, it'll be my first upgrade in about 4 years since getting my SE w810i. The icing on the cake will be when it'll be possible to use the camera flash as a torch as it's something I find really handy on the w810i.
Hmm I'm not so sure about that. These LED's are seriously bright, excellent for flash! I think maybe even if a mod is written to enable an I/O for them as a torch that it might not be good for the LED's, otherwise I'm sure HTC would have enabled it themselves.
Just my opinion, I could easily be wrong.
A bit of topic here but Im getting my Desire tomo!!!!
Need to debrand it as I dont want Orange apps all over the phone.
I was hoping HTC add bluetooth 3.0 to the desire as the new Samsung phones have it.

Yeah I found those last week
I aint got a cheap card laying around ha ha
I made a mistake and bought a 8GB card and now if Desire dont get rooted it would have beena waste as I wont fill it up with movies or music.
I will either send it back and buy if it gets rooted or Il use the 4GB card that comes with the phone as a gold card.

I guess we'll see. I only use it for a short time on my w810i and it's always been fine, I'd be surprised if it could damage them. I've prepared myself it not having one, it'd just be a big bonus if it did that's all.
Turning mobile internet traffic off..
Hi!
I don't think this is exactly what you want, but I find this feature useful (as I don't need/want my data syncing all the time)..
The widget that was talked about in previous posts is great, for controlling wifi, bluetooth brightness etc. BUT I found that the sync(on/off)-option will only affect the "default" apps (as gmail/mail, friendstream, weather etc) and not the podcast app I use (it would still sync etc. But then I found this:
If you hold down the "power button" (for some dumb reason they refer to it as the "shutdown button" in the [at least Swedish] manual, but that's not the main use) you get the menu to choose to turn off the phone, sound, airplane mode etc.
At the bottom of the list (I missed this at first) there is an option "mobile network" (with the subtext: "Turn off mobile internet"). And that will effectively turn off all 3g/data-connections (don't think it will affect wifi).
It's manual and you would have to turn it on, make the updates and turn it off yourself, but it's an option..
As the option to turn off 3g-/mobile data-connections clearly exists, it shouldn't be impossible to make a app that can do it on a scheduled basis..
Funny.. as you posted that I was reading this post with interest:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6129807&postcount=6
there are widgets preinstalled into the sense UI so you want have problem disabling and re enabling the internet. either WiFi either 3g/gprs

[REQUEST] Smart Actions, <3

Any devs want to try porting Smart Actions from the RAZR to our beloved GN <3 ?
I purchased Tasker but it's just not quite the same.
I'm sure a lot of people would be pretty excited to have the app on the nexus; it's a pretty f***in sweet app ;p
bump .. nobody? not even curious or considering trying.. or have any thoughts on the matter ? This really is an amazing app ...

I thought Tasker had more features than SmartActions. From what I've seen though SmartActions is more intuitive and user friendly. Is that why you prefer it?

Many reasons, and the community have asked for Smart Actions on various devices a lot.
so what is the difference between the 2??
Look into Locale. A lot of the plugins are cross-compatible. It's a slightly different mindset (one that I actually prefer), and IMO the interface is more intuitive. Tasker profiles seem to be more event based (e.g. triggered when I connect to wifi) whereas Locale is more state based (e.g. triggered while I'm connected to wifi).

Thanks, will check it out for sure
Tasker is a massive pain in the ass lol
Edit: Gonna stick with Tasker for now, Locale seems to be too basic (lacks a lot of functions/conditions)
SmartActions .. really jelly of the RAZR for that one thing lol
anyone tried Llama? Still my favourite...
There's also Settings Profiles … it supports Locale-plugins for some weeks now.
last shot at this before I let the thread fade away
...Any word on the possibility of a SmartActions port
thanks.
I too would be interested in smart actions.
I've tried llama, juice defender, and a couple other similar ones. I want rules like when my home wifi gets disconnected, turn on BT (to work in the car), turn off wifi to save power. Once I'm at work turn off BT, and turn wifi back on. The issue I have is llama isn't accurate enough. By the time it triggers I'm half way to work because of the cell tower distances.
Im looking into this as well. I've tried tasker and Im not willing to shell out more money for apps that probably wont work.
I want a few things:
When Im home I want wifi to automatically turn off, when I leave home I want it to turn off.
When I am home I want 3/4g to switch to 2g, and back to 3g/4g when I leave home.
Also want gps to turn on, on its own when I launch mapsm/nav/places.
Any ideas??
Tasker has failed me on more than one occasion and it's just too unreliable to use daily.
Seriously is it that hard to port over an app?
Why don't you just use tasker, you can do almost anything with it. Smart Actions is extremely limiting. Anyone who roots their phone and is truly a power user uses tasker.
If you would like i can make you some profiles.

Thats not good..
You might need to set up exit actions? When the task finishes it runs an action on exit. ie turn back on your data after the time period is over.

Yeah, I did.. thats what I meant.. sometimes, the exit action wouldn't be activated and so I would be stuck on Data-off or sync-off .. etc
weird, cant say ive ever heard of or had that problem unless maybe you disabled the notification icon at which point the OS might kill it.

WiFi Power Save Mode Back On!

After I finally got tired of being nagged about about the LH2 update, I updated. Bye bye root,Titanium and recovery Noticed that my GS3 started dropping WiFi again (3" from router). So I dutifully go into service screen with *#0011# and disabled it. Expected after a firmware update. However, I noticed the same behavior the next day or two. So I disable it again and performed an immediate reboot. Go back only to discover that WPSM has been turned on. WTF!?!?!? :crying:

man, what rom and kernel are you using, I had a similar problem, so I tried different kernels until one worked, I am no dev but I think that the update/rom/kernels have some things to do with it, guess it's just finding a combination that works.
Good luck.
Search for and install WiFi High Performance Widget from the play store. You will have run some tests to verify its working.
If you go into the *#0011# menu the button will show that it is on. But other apps will show Power Management is off.
Just looked and it may be that Power Save Mode may be different than Power Mgmt. Not sure but it may be something to start from when checking this stuff.
Hope this helps you out a little. Sorry I dont know more right off hand.

Totally stock, and rooted. I am also having problems now with Titanium uploading to Google Drive. Only successful with WPSM off. Still hit or miss though. Unrelated(I think), but I can now receive calls on WiFi calling.
*#0011# not working
For some strange reason, the *#0011# method of pulling up the menu to access the Wi-Fi power saving mode ON/OFF button is no longer working for me. I dial it in the keypad but no menu appears anymore. What's strange is that it used to. Anyone else having this issue?
Also, does keeping the power saving mode ON restrict the range of the Wi-Fi signal as well? Or simply make Wi-Fi turn off when the phone is sleeping?

Can't download mms messages..

So I turn my mobile network off to conserve battery. But if somebody sends me any mms (picture or multi-person) and I turn on my network after the fact, it just perpetually says downloading.

It probably doesn't really start properly since data was off. Maybe try to rebooting your phone to see if it will do it then.
Are you manually turning it off and on? You could try an app that automates it so that when you get a message and the screen lights up (assuming you have that setting enabled) it turns on and see if that helps. Though I have found that using such apps will sometimes cause your data to not reenable and require either toggling manually, toggling airplane mode, or rebooting.

Yes I am using the toggle in the shade. I will give the app a shot but my guess would be failure since the network seems to need to be on when the message comes in rather than an automated toggle after the fact

If you enable screen on for notifications it may have data back on before the download actually starts. It may not work. But I have used screen off profiles before and not had issues with MMS other than the occasional failure to reenable. Do you turn WiFi and GPS off? It may be enough to allow for leaving data on.

That's because NJ sucks balls.... Try going to settings, applications and force stop the messaging app. Then open messages and try downloading again. If for some reason that doesn't work, a reboot should.
Try this:
Be sure that you have good connection and you might want to force quit messages if this continues.
