The subject heading pretty much says it all. I think about once a week I'm coming to my phone, pressing the power button to wake up the screen, and I'm finding that the phone was totally off.
Just the other day it happened twice. Never happened before, and it may be a one off.
But am I just accidentally taping power off (which I'm pretty sure I am) or am I going towards making sure my backups are current and getting a replacement (no doubt referbished) Desire?
Perhaps it's a 3rd party application causing the issue?
I'd suggest you do a hard reset and see if the problem comes back.
It's pretty difficult to accidentally power off your device. You still have to go through 2 screen taps to power off after you long-press the stand-by key.
Get it exchanged if you've ruled out any 3rd party applications.
This happened to me for the first time yesterday. Left my phone in the glove box of my car, came back and it was turned off. It would turn back on either, I tried for ages in a mild panic!
When I got home I removed the battery for a bit and then it suddenly worked.
All been OK since.

I was thinking about 3rd party applications, but haven't started investigating. Probably because of the frequency it occurs and the amount of apps I have. Though I think I only have pretty popular apps.
I did a post a while ago that I had dropped the phone in a very minor way that would not have broken a Jacobs Cream Cracker (if you don't live in UK, they are very fragile, brittle, biscuit type things). But on each of the two times, one of them being a very cushioned landing, when I picked up the phone, it was off. I was thinking that this must have been what happened. But I'm now thinking it was either a separate issue or coincidence because I don't drop the phone and it still is sometimes off. And I think this occured before even the minor falls.

I just did a test and dropped it from exactly 3cm flat onto my desk and it was instant off. I should add that I have a silicone/gel tight case on my Desire.
Like I said before I don't think this is the main problem, I think this is a secondary issue. And as I've said before, I think the phone going off from this sort of a drop/shock is too sensitive and delicate. Maybe sometime is not quite as tight as it could be in other people's phones.
Perhaps the body of your device is a bit warped such that the battery is a bit loose. That would explain why your device would power off from shock. The battery contacts may have shifted.
Try this. Take off your battery cover. The battery contacts should be on the left (the side without the volume rocker). Try to leverage the right side (the side with the volume rocker) of the battery so that the battery remains in contact with the device. I would try to slip thin strips of paper on the right so that it pushes the battery to the left.
Then try your 3cm drop test again. See if it improves.
If it improves, you can choose to continue using this method (despite how ghetto it is). Or you can see if you can get it replaced under warranty. Don't mention that you dropped the device, of course!
Other issues (like the glovebox fellow) could be related to heat, too. If it's too warm, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns off and doesn't turn back on until it's cooled down.
The phone has never yet failed to turn on the instance I've pressed the power button.

Nope. Contacts on the phone are all sprunt and sticking out nicely to meet the contacts on the battery, which will then compress the sprung contacs. So I doubt pushing any of the contact out further will help.
Is there any sound meant to come from the phone when you shake it? I don't mean furiously shake it, but just a milding shaking by your ear.
I have always heard a small movement but had assumed it was the vibrating mechanism.

Its the camera lens (internal focus part). Its like this on all HTC devices due to the lens they use.

So... all of a sudden, everytime i slide the screen up, it shuts the screen off. I slide it back, hit the power button a few times, then it turns back on?

Power off your phone, remove the battery and then put it back in, making sure it fits in there snuggly.
That has happened to me, and removing/replacing the battery fixed it.
Yes, as Amy noted this behavior is often attributed to the battery not sitting exactly right in the compartment. Sometimes just popping it out and back in is enough, but some people have reported needeing to slip a small piece of paper or something similar under the battery cover as well to help keep it snug. (It seems that the sliding motion can be enough to shake the battery off the contacts if it's not secure enough).
Let us know if that clears it up

my tp2 just literally started doing the same.
earlier today it was perfectly fine.
but now.
i slide out the keyboard and the screen goes blank.
i tried the remove battery and restart.
didn't help.
i tried the paper between battery and cover.
didn't help either.
the screen only goes blank when completely slid out.
if i hold it open just before completely open the screen is still on.
any suggestions?

Yea, none of those things worked. However, keeping the battery snug helped with the issue of not hearing anything through the handset.
It honestly sounds to me like both of you are dealing with a loose connection between the screen and the motherboard somewhere, either power or video feed, can't say for sure which. Unless you're willing to disassemble your rhodium (which isn't impossible, just complex), it sounds like it's time to send it to a service center (for AT&T) or to HTC, since that would be a warranty repair.
I hope that this is just freak coincidence that both of you had this happen just now, and not a sign that we're all at risk of having the same issue eventually

EDIT: One more question for you guys...whatever is on the display on your screen rotates into landscape before the display shuts off right?

i have own the phone for about three weeks...
though. bought it used from a friend who had it for four months.
but my friend bought it used from somebody too...
aka. not sure how long it has been used.
the display is rotated. and stays on as long as the right side is held.
before the 'tilt piece' is revealed. as soon as it is. the screen goes blank.
and i believe it would be the video feed...
i can still type with the keyboard. just can't see what i am typing.
unless i hold the screen from sliding completely out on the right.
and about the warranty...
would i have a warranty with htc still?
don't have proof of purchase.
just the phone and original box.

My AT&T Tilt 2 has been exhibiting this behavior for some weeks now. It seems to be centered around the keyboard slide, but the behavior comes and goes. I found that slamming the phone on the desktop would bring it back to life for a little while, but then it would start to clap out again in a few days. What a pile.
Anyway, I have a fresh one from AT&T to swap out. Now all I have to do is get all my applications and stuff transferred over to the new phone before sending the craprod back to them.

Oh boy...yeah I didn't realize you'd gotten it third-hand. Well it has been less than a year since the Rhodium was released, so it's possible that HTC will still honor the 1-year manufacturer's warranty, but I can't guarantee it. My suggestion would be to just contact HTC America's service group (1-888-617-1113) and see what they say.
Best case: they agree to cover the repair
Worst case: an example of one of the risks you take when you buy something through "unofficial" channels
Yea luckily for me, I bought it second hand, but it was purchased from a retail store, meaning I got a warranty exchange. I just sent it back.

im having same issue, when the phone is slid open, goes black, nothing gets it back on, the buttons light up, display dead
however, if i place it in stand by via power button in regular mode, then slide it open, it works, ive rattled and shook the phone, never goes back off, im typing this with it open and tilted....

Don't know if anyone else is experiencing this with their Play but as of a week or two ago the backlight started acting strange. The backlight will randomly stay off when I push the power button with the slider gamepad closed. Only way to make it come on is to pop out the slider. It seems to be random, and if I push on the slider edge slightly with my thumb with the slider closed the backlight randomly flickers, ranging from slight to severe.
The display is still working despite the backlight issues, I can open apps, and use the phone normally but the backlight flickers on and off. Makes it especially hard to use the phone in the dark.
Phone has never been dropped once.
I've replicated this problem with a variety of roms, both custom and stock. It's definitely not app related or even custom kernel related. It happens on a fresh wipe with stock rom with stock kernel. It happens on CM7 with custom kernel.
I'm curious if anybody else is experiencing this. It would tell me if it's just an isolated incident or if others are having this problem.
Sounds like a faulty connection to the backlight to me.
I had the same problem 2 days ago. Then I couldn't get my phone screen on at all!
I sent my phone back to Sony, even thought I bought it second hand. Phoned them up and talked to them. They asked what time of year I bought it so I said around August and then they gave me the address to send it to. Now I'm just waiting to see what happens next.
If your going to send your phone to Sony for repair then make sure you put the fresh firmware back on and un-root your phone as that breaks the warranty (unless they don't know about it)

Sounds like a faulty ribbon cable to me. (cable that connects the screen to the rest of the phone)
You wouldn't need to drop it for that to go bad, It could just be a case of opening and closing the gamepad or lot.
Yeah good thoughts, most likely the ribbon. That really sucks because I've only had the phone for 7 months, and I've taken excellent care of it. Sounds like a major design oversight.
Mine is probably near complete failure at this point. It's taking a lot more effort to keep the screen on now. Fearing soon it won't work at all.
In hopes that this might help someone else down the line, I was able to fix my problem. Yesterday the screen pretty much quit and I had no choice but to try and solve it myself or buy a new phone.

You'll need a torx T5 tool to pull out all the screws but they are cheap.
Underneath the phone and jammed into the screen ribbon was a rather thick hair just hanging out. Somehow it buried itself in there. I removed it, unplugged and replugged the screen ribbon and cleaned the dusty inside with a q-tip and reassembled it all together.
It works fine now, so hopefully this helps someone else avoid having to pony up for a new phone. For those under warranty probably best to send back but for those like me with no warranty it's worth the shot.
I've been using my s4 for about 10 days. everything's fine but it has happened like 3 times the phone just shut off itself without me touching it. it's in my pocket, and i was using it like 5mins ago, then when i take it out i found it's totally off already.
the battery had enough juice at the time and the phone didn't feel too warm either. i totally have no clue why this happened. anyone here is experiencing the same thing with your s4? :crying:
for the first two time i can just press and hold the power button to turn it back on. but today when it happened the third time, the press and hold didn't work until i took out the battery and put it back. when it's on, the battery still had like 70% power.
this is frustrating... should i contact t-mobile for an exchange?
p.s. i rooted the phone and from what i can recall, besides titanium backup i didn't install any new app that i didn't have on my old htc sensation. the sensation didn't have this random shutting down problem. (i don't think the titanium caused either).
It used to happen on my s2. But I change roms and it went away.
Change rom and see what happens.
If possiible go full stock for few days.
Otherwise return it.

I actually have a problem when I'm on the Internet or doing other things. My phone just got stock on a blue screen and I can't do anything to get out of it. I hav3 to turn off my phone in order to ho back . It happens to me like 8 times since I got the phone im frustrating

i didn't install the adobe flash player, nor did i install a different rom. everything is stock. i fully factory reset the phone once and after that i even didn't disable or delete any bloat ware. but the random shutting down still happens... annoying

Mine has done the same thing twice, first time assumed it was me (before the latest firmware upgrade which "improves stability") the second time it was in my pocket, took it out and it was off - thought battery was dead but tried to switch it on anyway and guess what, battery was 90%+
Have no idea why it shut off - stock rom, only "odd" app is Good for enterprise .
Could it be related to overheating in the pocket?
Anyone got any ideas?

Happen to me and to some other Italian guys, too! In my case, the I9500 turn off itself, sometimes reboot itself, just now! Depends from the rom, I don't know why. One rom reboot it, try another rom and after a bit of second shutdown it. And always after tha the display go off
I9505 not, it had only the problem of the audio crackle, for now.

I am having an i9500 (octa core version) and running United Arab Emirates 2013 June 4.2.2 I9500XXUBMEA I9500OJVBMEA firmware (stock , no root) , frequently when the phone is locked it will shut down on it's own and I have to keep the power button held a bit longer than usual for it to start (like 20 seconds) , I do not want to root it because the company I bought it from is not that...good....so I am very afraid of sending it to their service department , please , any info/suggestions would be greatly appreciated

It's a firmware issue as far as I could tell Good luck finding a good one , I gave up and traded my i9500 for a i9505.
I found out that if i put my phone in the loader it shuts off... Maybe battery problem..

Ok so i may have isolated the cause. at least a physical one. I am an electrician, and i do a LOT of repetitive tasks so i love listening to music while i work. thats when i noticed a pattern to the problem. and this will blow your mind.
( I do not recommend you try this yourself unless you particularily like the sound of 700$ going SNAP)
i took my phone out of my pocket, and by pressing both thumbs on the center of the screen and physicaly bending the phone forward, ( Dont give me crap for this, im smarter than most and i understand limitations. I was impressed that this phone can bend nearly a full 1/8th of an inch!) i was able to replicate the problem.
My theory is, since samsung used a softer plastic for there entire frame, and since the phone is so thin, when ever id bend down, (Pulling pants tighter across my thigh with the phone facing my leg) it would bend and physicaly seperate the metal pins that contact the battery.
PS: just got home, DGAF about spelling right now. is it this hot for anyone else right now!? lol

I've been running the GT-I9505G play edition phone for the last month and only in the last week has the phone began to reboot on its own. What's strange about it is it usually happens when I'm not using the phone. I've seen it reboot maybe a dozen times over the last week. The phone always reboots and doesn't just turn off.
I'm going to see if factory reset takes care of the problem, if not I guess back to Google for a retread...

Yes I do a lot of bending down and I always have my body in awkward angles while working on the flight line and I used to have the same exact problem at work. I always thought that my S4's shutting off was due to the tiny half a mm gap between the bottom of my 7500mAh ZeroLemon Extended Battery and the bottom of the phone's battery slot, in-turn causing the battery to move inside my S4 and make the battery disconnect from the pins. I noticed a tiny gap in the fitting of the battery to the phone and that the battery was never really snug as much as it was with the 3500mAh Anker Extended Battery for my S3; it's really easy to remove the ZeroLemon battery and thought the battery shouldn't be easy to remove.
So I figured it was either the gap causing it to shut off or my movements somehow causing the power button to be pushed while it was in my pocket. I had a feeling it couldn't be the latter though because the thigh-located cargo/map pockets of my ABU's are a bit too large to not have enough room in the pocket for the power button to be pushed. I ended up solving my shutting off problem by cutting a very small piece of thick, durable paper the length of the S4's battery slot and I used the paper as a shim between the bottom edge of the ZeroLemon battery and my S4's battery slot to close the miniscule gap. Since I did used a thick piece of paper as a shim, I've yet to get any sudden shut-off's... even with the amount of times I bend down and move in ways that would cause it to shut off.

I just recently have same issues, it is turning off while the battery is not dead! i have tries to reset the factory setting but it dose not help at all.
what frustrated that Samsung mobile costumer services in UK is not helping much!!!

if your phone shuts off and than you try to restart it and the battery is a lot lower than before than your battery is broken
I get exactly what you describe, only takes a slight bend to shutdown. doesn't do it with the back cover off, without the cover the battery moves out slightly and the phone stays on.

So I got my "faulty" HTC One X 32gb, which I managed to get for $100 working yesterday with help from a person here.
Anyway, I've noticed a strange issue, the keypresses of the power button will be simulated occasionally with no actual pressure on the power button, sometimes this is left on long enough to both shut off and turn on the device.
I opened the device and there appears to be nothing physically wrong with it, this problem occurs regardless of ROM or hboot.
This is a truly strange issue and after placing the buttons back in correctly, it doesn't appear to be registering the power button at all, even if it has a satisfying click like on my other one X, I think the issue lies within the internal button, but how do I fix it?
Edit: After leaving it overnight in the same position (no movement) to copy files over, it did not continue with the issue, which leaves me to believe the angle of the phone/gravity has some effect, although there are no loose parts to highlight what the cause is.
Edit2: It appears this One X has been repaired before, I have a suspicion it's a new case, unless the white One X is supposed to have a different feel (smoother) to the black One X.
The screen may have also been repaired, as the copper tape that would normally cover the battery is gone, and the battery is loose, so the adhesive was loosened.
I got the same problem! At first this problem was just for 5-10 minutes. After that, it would act normal again. Can't remember when, but after some days or weeks it stopped and i thought it was fixed, Now, some months later the problem is back. But this time it locks like 2 times a second. So my phone is unuseable. I can't even backup my files because it reboots or power off. I also opened my HOX but cant find anything inside, looks good and no damage anywhere...
I will leave my phone for a day. Hopefully it will work after 24 hours...
Hey there. I'm a bit new to this side of XDA. Honestly with how long I've been AWOL from this site nothing is familiar anymore. How time flies. Well my first post back in years couldnt be more unfortunate phone wise, I've had my Z2 for a couple of months now and as a mechanic it's been treated like all my others phones prior, rough. I've been locally recognized as the guy who has a new phone every couple of months because he can't not shatter a phone. An expensive hobby of breaking phones. Well luckily I didn't shatter my Z2. I just water logged it. Gotta change things up right? So here's where the interesting problem comes in, I let the phone sit in rice for 30 hours, switching the rice out half way through. It acted up like you would expect in the first couple of hours but then stopped. When I pulled the phone out I scraped the rice out of all the books and crannies and tried to power it on, to no avail. Dead battery I assume, so I plug it in. Charge icon pops up, a sign of life! How glorious. So I let it sit for a minute as I assume the battery probably dropped below minimum voltage when the LEDs were freaking out. Went back to the phone, held the power button and no screen, but "Hello, Moto!" So at this point I'm convinced the screen is dead, so I force it off with the volume down method and pry off the screen. To find what? More water. Good Lord. This phone is incredibly water resistant just in reverse. So I do the only thing that makes sense at this point, I remove the ribbion connector from the board for the display and put the phone back in new rice as 2 separate pieces. I then leave it in there for another 30 hours switching the rice halfway. Bringing us to now. I took the phone out, cleaned all the rice out of the 2 pieces and off the remaining adhesive and connected the ribbion back to the board. Plug the charger in, and again, charging logo. But then I hold the power button and the TMobile splash screen pops up! Then the screen goes dead and once again, "Hello, Moto!". But whats different is now when the boot sequence is finished I can interact with the phone and it works, shake for flashlight, enter my passcode (just by feel cause I'm good like that, ladies hmu), and the button responds with vibration. The phone is working but no screen. So at this point I'm sure, the display driver is done. I murdered it in cold daylight. So I shut it off and start looking around for new screens, in the midst of this I knock the phone and accidentally hit the power button, and it starts to boot up. T-Mobile spash screen, screen death, "Hello, Moto!", and nothing. Now that seems weird. Why would it work twice on the TMobile splash? So I decide I'll try putting it in fastboot for S&G's. Restart, put it in fastboot and the screen stays on. Beautiful and clear as day, all buttons work, everything reads fine, but, if I go to boot it or do anyother action than "retart bootloader", the cycle continues. T-Mobile, death, hello Moto, nothingness. Now at this point I'm okay with the phone being dead, it's fine, but I'm intrigued now. What would cause the screen to work just fine when in the bootloader and the TMobile splash screen, but die when it boots? The phone is very clearly working in the background. I logged in, used Google assistant, used the flashlight, pressed buttons on the dialer, all without the screen but with haptic feedback and audio. Could the graphical side of the main partition just be corrupt, or maybe the display driver is dead but the main board interacts with it differently during fastboot? I'm far from being knowledgeable on the hardware side of these things but I'm really genuinely interested in getting feedback here from anyone with an idea of what is going on. I'll post a video here in a half an hour or so when I finish up with dinner.

Best way I can describe it for you is if an ECU on a car got wet and shorted out. Everything works but you get an engine code for TPS sensor failure due to said short. (The ECU can't read TPS due to a short). That is what seems like what happened.

Well see I would think that as well but the screen does work. Just only in fastboot, and the boot logo.

Fastboot is a pretty low level and most likely uses basic hardware. I mean really what is there to see but a simple background with some text. Once you load the OS then all the hardware and it's drivers into play. Have you tried booting into safemode? Ultimately you'll probably have to repair or replace, but there could be a slim chance that there's still a little moisture in there and it still has a short somewhere.
