two questions regarding google maps - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there folks. I just encountered two requests for my maps experience
1 - when in the browser: selecting text only gives me the option to Wikipedia or translate. Is there a way to select an address and directly show it on maps?
2 - some websites have their own list of things shown on maps. Is there a way to add their "feed" as a layer to my maps (app)
I wish for solutions to my inquiries. Thanks a lot already!

[Q] Contact address show - default action

Hi,
when clicking on the (street) address of a contact in the HTC Desire HD contact app, I'm not offered a choice anymore. The default action now is to open the address in the HTC locations application. I used to get a choice between HTC locations, Google Maps, and other navigation programs. I do not want to use HTC locations.
I can't find a way to get the choice back again. I downloaded DefaultApp Reset by T.Fujii from the market and it offered to delete the default actions of HTC Sense and the Browser. I did that, without success. Looking in other threads the advice was to use ClearDefault from the market. I couldn't find that one, but I guess DefaulApp Reset does the same.
I can go to settings > applications > manage applications, and delete default actions of programs. In fact, the DefaultApp Reset just takes you there too. None of the applications I associate with my problem have the possibility to hit "clear default actions", they're all greyed out. I have looked into the following applications:
Contacts
Contact widget
Friend stream and - widget
HTC Hub
HTC Likes
HTC location service
HTC Sense
HTC Sync
Settings
Settings wizard
Location
Locations
Locations launcher
Locations widget
Maps
Settings widget
Street View
Maybe the names are a bit wrong, I'm not using english on my device.
After clearing HTC Sense and Browser with the app, no more new applications show up anymore that can be undone from default actions.
What can I do?

I never had the choice. It always went to Google maps, but now goes to HTC Locations. This came up on another thread - it could have been over on Androidfourms - and there is nothing to change to fix it on a stock phone (that anyone has found - maybe if it's rooted). All I want is to be able to see the full postal address in writing and then, *if* I wanted, to then see it on a 'map'.
After checking a few apps out I went and installed Youlu and it does exactly what I want. Shows the address then launches Google maps if you tap it. It'd be good to be able to change the application that is launched but you can't have everything ....
Dave
Hmm, that would suck. I'm pretty sure I had the choice once....
I figured it out, all of a sudden. When you are in the contact list, you can click on the picture of a contact in stead of on the name. Then you get a small widget that has a Map option to the utmost right. That one opens a window where I can chose between Google Maps and Waze, where I was looking for.
That doesn't solve your problem but does solve mine. Happy again!

You're right. Sort of .... On mine (latest OTA update - the one that was pulled) I get that widget but choosing the map option gets me Google maps. No choices. very strange that touching the address gets you Locations but the map option on the contact picture is Google ..... Me thinks HTC's software engineers need some better QA testing!
Dave
Well the choice I get is between Maps and Waze. So, if you don't use Waze - which you should by the way - that might be the reason you don't have a choice.
Or, it could be that you have ticked the always use this action box. You might be able to undo that, using the method I described in my topic start. BTW, it seems that deleting to many apps' default actions broke up all Auto Sync on my device. Got it up and running now after some fiddling around.
Easy check: download Waze from the market and see if you get a choice.
I'm wondering what the requirements for an app are to show up in the choice list.
wanted to post the same...
... question...
my dhd stock newest OTA update also doesnt ask which maps application should be startet.
it just opens "locations" instead of asking.
thanks for the workaround over the contact list, works fine ;=) but isn't a solution...
best regards,
mike
Any update for this problem ?
searching as you are
sorry, just a few days ago i searched google again.
no solution found :=)
if you find one, please share it

[Q] Opening post codes from browser in Maps app

Hi All,
Upon clicking a post-code from the stock HTC browser, how do I instruct it to open the Google maps application, instead of the web version?
I've checked under "Launch Defaults" for both the browser and maps, both are greyed out.
Any thoughts?
S/W: 2.29.405.5
Copy the postcode and paste it in Google Maps?
That's the only workable option at this time by the looks of it. This is a feature of our smartphone website aimed at non-technical students.. so it would have been nice to get it working properly!

[Q] Are there any Search, and Sort by page apps??

Hi All,
Just got my SGS2 few days ago and spent days on this forum, for it rooted and learnt heaps from here, this is fantastic! Thank you all.
I spent almost the whole night searching for a couple of apps and could not find the answer, please don't shoot me if there is already an existing thread, I just could not find it.
I am looking for an app or function in the SGS2 that allows you to search for installed apps, similar to the 'Search page' on ipad, instead of scrolling through pages of installed apps. I have already installed the 'AppZorter Lite' which allows me to sort them in order, but not search for an app.
Second of all, is there any apps that allows you to sort apps in alpha order page by page instead of all pages?
Thanks in advance.

You can use google search(integrated into you sgs2) for searching the apps installed in.
Open google search and click on the google icon then it will shows the content type(All, web, etc....) it is searching currently. there you can see a small settings icon at the right top corner click on it, and you can include apps or music whatever you want.
Hope this will help you....Let me know if you need more information.
Thank you very much.
Didn't know it is already there
How about, do you know any apps that allows you to sort apps in alpha order page by page instead of all pages?
Actually the Google Search integrated in Android is quite smart
3rd party applications can be linked to Google Search bar. So, apps like imbdb, google docs, music, etc can be integrated into Google Search, allowing multiple search in parallel.
Also, you don't need to have the widget in your homescreen, just long tap menu buton (that acts as a search button in some apps that implements this function) in any homescreen.

[Q] Translate function in Internet Explorer

Guys, I love my Surface RT but the only thing that's missing for me is, well Google chrome of course, but since we can't get that (yet) I wonder if there is a translate function within IE just like Google chrome? Or is there a plugin available which I can install by jailbreaking my device?
I know that I can translate a website via Google translate website but its not working correctly for me.
Desktop-mode only, but IE has a feature called "accelerators" that let you highlight some text, then click a button (or press-and-hold or right-click on the text) and translate it, search it, map it, whatever. It's had this for about as long as Google Chrome has even existed, in fact! By default it uses the Bing services, but that's fully customizable. Tools -> Manage Add-ons -> Accelerators -> Find More Accelerators... will let you get to the Google ones, for example

Amazing both of them works better than via Google translate. Still waiting on a function like Google Chrome that translates it automatically but for now this option with the bookmark is the best!
Fingers crossed for a browser choice in win8.1

[Q] Sideloaded FirePhone Google Maps (or other apps) not working correctly thread

Hi,
I was able to get Google Play on the unlocked $199 Amazon firephone without rooting. Also was able to get All google apps from play store and change the Launcher.
Only question is that Google maps labels are being overlapped (they are not refreshing) - Is this a known google map side load problem, or I just have a crappy version of the app with the wrong resolution?
Thanks,
( I have the steps to easily get Google play on the fire sale forum topic)
- As an employee of the maker, I will try to get the guys at Lab126 release some dev version that allows users to easily switch between Google experience and Amazon experience on this phone seamlessly - that would make it truly a good phone.
What happens when Google pushes an update to the store? Does this stop working?
The overlapping text appears to be caused by Google Maps not detecting the phone's resolution correctly. Can you try an older version of Google Maps?
Sorry if I'm not being helpful--I won't have my Fire Sale Phone yet until Tuesday.

Extremely old version worked fine (4.4) - Tried all the ICS and up version 8.0 through to current - all have the label problem. Could be Some GPU rendering issue with text (I worked for something similar at my last job) - the website maps look ok from chrome/etc. so it must be in the app - dunno if I should reverse engineer the APK to get the setting corrected - I filed a bug with google to see if it is a known problem with certain devices.
I am using google maps for search and then using nokia maps for navigation currently - so should not be a big problem for now.
If you can get devs to release a version that can toggle ON/OFF the AVD launcher that'd be awesome. It shouldn't take too much time to do.
Meanwhile I guess we'll just have to sideload apps
Overlapping text

Don't know if this is relevant because I am not a developer but if you go into settings/applications and parental control/manage applications, then click on google maps and then on clear data, when you go back into google maps there is no overlapping of text initially. After you start zooming out or moving around the map, the overlapping starts back up.
I've noticed that the maps, on first launch, looked fine.
My Gmail will sporadically sync emails. Sometimes, it's instant; other times, it won't try to sync at all.
Found simple workaround for Google Maps If you don't use the voice Navigation feature (needed for California in driving)-
(uninstall Google Maps - optional)
1) Install Chrome and allow it to use location
2) from google app search for address by your voice and get direction card (google now style)
3) tap card (will prompt you to open first time with native Nokia/Here or Chrome or Gmaps)
4) Use Chrome to see the map and you can set chrome as default
Chrome Google map application/page is mostly same functionality as the Jelly bean version of Google maps (Left menu has traffic, transit, bicycle & satellite) only terrain is missing. - You can also bookmark Google map in Chrome and get almost everything you need for directions in regular usage.

I think I have narrowed down the app problem to the system fonts/antialiased fonts used by the stupid fire OS - without rooting I doubt you can change the system font of the phone. If somebody has developer mode -try enabling GPU rendering and see if anything stands out v/s other android devices - I will check on my wife's HTC One M8 later.

Yeah. The Gmail app has problems. It crahes periodically and doesn't want to auto sync. Also, i can't add a second Google account. It says that it can't communicate with Google servers and then gives a message about no network connection which is wrong.
I am on Thor Gapps Rom ( 13.3.2.4 ) rom and got the same issue too!
Google Earth works just fine - So there are 2 workarounds - Google Maps from Chrome and Google Earth
The Waze app also seems OK.
Upload to Fire OS 4.6.1 . the issue gets solved. You week receive an OTA update.
