[Q] Comparing G2 to G1? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I see some posters comparing various aspects of the G2 to the G1. For me, the G1 absolutely sucked and didn't come anywhere close to the Iphone (gasp!.....G1 "the Iphone killer"....what a joke). It was slow, would lock up the apps a lot for up to a half a minute, stall on the internet among other things. Two of my friends had it too and they were very unhappy with it.
I can't see how anyone can compare anything betwen the G1 and G2...the G2 just blowing it away in all aspects.
Have my G2 for about a week now and it's wonderful!
Any comments?
Thanks for your input.

What a weird thread. It seems obvious and logical to compare the G1 and G2 since the G2 is being marketed as the decendent of the G1 (at least, that's what the name implies). It's sort of like comparing the new ZR1 to the old ZR1 or the new Mustang GT to an older Mustang GT (or even the 6cyl versions).
The new one should be better, but, at the time that the G1 came out, it kicked butt. I had relatively few problems with mine, both when I was running stock OS and when I had it rooted running 2.1. Actually, with Cyanogen's 5.0.8, it ran fast most of the time.
It's obviously not in the same ballpark as the G2, but the G2 is a comparable when scaled to the time.
You do realize that the G1 shouldn't be compared to the iphone 4 or the 3GS, it should be compared to the original iphone, and compared to that, it was in the same league and was a good comparison.

I must say I agree. I have been using the G1 since day 1. It has been rooted since JF and currently running CM 6.0. When I went to buy it I actually decided to go look at the Iphone before I pulled the trigger and still decided to get the G1. It was a great phone. I have never seen a phone that could carry on as long as the G1 did thanks to the great group of programmers here at XDA.
Now I wonder if the G2 will COMPARE to the G1 as far as modability(word?) goes. Is that so wrong. Also, I wonder, can the hinge on the G2 COMPARE to the bullet proof hinge on the G1. I have been slamming that thing open and closed for 2 years now and it still works the same as it did when new.
Obviously a 2 year old phone is not going to compare very well to the latest and greatest as far as processing speed is concerned but I will be COMPARING the G2 to the G1 on a daily basis as I have become so comfortable with my G1 that I only hope I can be as comfortable with the new G2.

This was comparing to the Original Iphone
I was comparing the G1 to the original IPhone. Everyone at work had one except me and two others with the G1. It was unanimous the IPhone was a superior unit.
The G1 was an absolute dog in performance compared to it. The Iphone connected to wireless lans faster and with more download and upload speeds. It also ran faster on the 3g networks. As I mentioned earlier, the G1 would hang on the internet and many, many times would take a long time for the apps to show after selecting the icons.
I noticed most replies had their phones modified in some way... rooted or whatever.
The G1's we all had were kept stock and the Iphones too.
In my experience, there is no comparison betwen the G1 and G2 in performance. Everything the G1 was not, the G2 is.

The G1 was epic when it came out...2 years ago.
The iPhone has received more recent updates than the officially Android 1.6 G1. Not really an apples-to-apples (lulz) comparison. G1 with Froyo (as well as anything else with Froyo), is CONSIDERABLY more responsive.
Also, since it was the first Android phone, I don't think HTC and T-Mobile were willing to take as big of a risk with it, and the hardware wasn't really top-of-the-line like the G2 hardware is (for the most part).
At the time of the G1, phone specs were important but to be quite honest I don't remember people comparing specs as much then as they do since Android. I know it happened with the WinMo/Nokia people, but it just didn't seem as big of a deal as it does now that people are moving from their dumbphones and the smartphone market is growing and much more competitive.
G1 was a great phone. By today's standards it sucks, but it was still a well-built device that introduced Android.

Good point
Good point Jorsher. It was the first Adroid phone. It was just horribly frustrating watching the original IPhone performing way better than our G1's. I also watched the IPhone owner's frustrations when they first got it.
While their performance kept getting better with the Apple updates....I anxiously waited for the the few updates from HTC/TMo that turned out very disappointing.
I had the G1 for almost two years...not happy for one and a half.
But the G2....wow!!!

Yeah, I was disappointed at the lack of updates. I think it just kind of got brushed under the rug when more competent hardware came out. In the end, it didn't bother me too much, thanks to the devs here.
I remember that when I got it, I was amazed... I could deal with the not-so-fast hardware simply because there was nothing else like it. Now that there are powerful Android devices on every carrier, it made it a lot more intolerable to continue using the outdated G1.
Currently with the G2, I don't see how I could possibly be dissatisfied with the performance. However, I'm sure that by time I'm due for an upgrade, I'll be singing a different tune...

The G1 will poop on your G2's HSPA+

I actually had no issue with my G1 until about 2 months ago when a coworker was talking about how he had made the move to android. I asked what he was using and he pulled out the Nexus one and let me play around with it. That was the point I realized I needed a new phone.
I will say that when I showed him my G1 running Froyo, he was amazed. He was surprised at how snappy it was considering its age. I guess I was always satisfied with it since I didn't really have anything to compare it to.

i'm gonna come out as the only person that agrees with the poster... my G1 has been pure crap since I got it... it kinda ran good when it was new, but once I rooted it, it maybe stayed good for a month or two. i've spent all of 2010 wiping, repartitioning, reformatting, reflashing, and trying every possible rom with no luck. everything I tried was horrible. for the last 6 months, even when completely cleaning everything out and doing a totally fresh start multiple times, my G1 ran like my old T-Mobile Wing...
and now that I have G2, it's not even in the same league. I mean it's like comparing a quadcore PC to an Atari 2600. except the Atari 2600 didn't lock up and freeze as much.
I love you G2.

good grief, you do both realize that it's not a direct comparison, and I don't think ANYONE means it to be. It's more of a then vs now comparison. Kind of like comparing a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO to a 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO. You can't really compare the 2 directly. But, if you think about what each was compared to the competition when they were current...
Like I said, comparing the 1994(?) Corvette ZR1, to a current Corvette ZR1. They can't be compared directly, but at the time that each was new, they were the peak of their evolution.
When the G1 came out, it was awesome. When the G2 came out, it was awesome.

Give it 2 years, you'll all be complaining about how much the G2 sucked.

haha yea probably but honestly i can't imagine how. if i touch buttons and the apps i'm trying to run just instantly pop up (rather than sitting there for 5-15 seconds), there's nothing to complain about anymore

But they don't. At the time of G1, everyone thought it was fast and snappy. When the G3 hits, we won't be able to live with the lagfest that is the G2.

You cant imagine how slow the G2 will be because you are still using Froyo 2.2... Just imagine if you install The Rocky Road Android 5.1 that requires atleast 2.3Ghz dual core, 2Gb RAM, 10 Gig internal memory, and a micro mobile ATI HD8200 or equivalent.
Just look at the future harder.

Kinda like back in the N64 days: "how can graphics get any more realistic!?"
It happens. Can't wait to see Crysis 12 running on phones.

I get wood just thinking about the 250 GTO.

G2 or HD2?

Ok, so I've been talking to TONS of people about which phone I should upgrade to. My HD2 friends are vouching for the HD2, but the G2 people say that the HD2's battery life is **** (this was pre-Nand). Which of the 2 phones do you think I should look into upgrading to?
I'm hoping to have a phone that has a big developer base so the phone is always supported (unlike the Mytouch Slide, which was supported for 2 months until the G2 came out.)
Sent from a phone that's better than yo Momma's. bbq.
well you're posting in the G2 forum so I bet most people are gonna say G2 (hopefully)
and cyanogen owns a G2 himself, so the phone should be heavily supported for a good while...
I personally went with the G2 and am lovin it
I have both.
Why do I have both? Because the G2 really attracted me as it reminded me of my old TP2.
Would I buy it again? No.
The keyboard is stiff.
The screen is small.
The CPU is unimpressive.
I get less battery life with it, than my HD2 with Android.
The hinge is just stupid.
The flash is weak.
The camera seems lower quality in side by side comparisons.
Go with the HD2.

Ok, see, this is helpful. The HD2 has 720p right? Isn't that better than the G2's camera already? Also, do you think that the HD2 will be as supported as it is now in 10 months?

Actually, I haven't updated my Froyo build in awhile, so I don't know if the 720p is working yet or not for video recording. I do know the sound is a bit better on the video with the HD2, but I never compared the video quality between the two.
When I mentioned the camera, I meant still shots. I've been able to do some HDR shots even with the HD2.
Another thing, I am getting about 5-7mw of drain on an SD card build, and I hear the NAND builds are down to 2-3mw of drain. With my normal battery, a day of medium to heavy use isn't a problem. However, I also have the HTC extended battery and go about 2 days without a charge with no issue
I don't know if they will make an extended battery for the G2, but the way the battery door is made, it would be hard to do.
That's another thing, I don't like the MicroSD being in a weird little "cage" under the battery. So much for swapping in cards while the phone is on.
One thing I forgot...
The screen size on the HD2 will completely spoil you to the point that no smaller screen will ever "do" for you. Be it just reading on the screen, or typing on it with two thumbs in landscape. It's just perfect.

The color is nothing like an AMOLED screen, but it is brighter and crisper than most other LCD's out there.
It's the same screen the EVO and the Desire HD have, and both of those get pretty high praise
It certainly is higher brightness and color than the one they put on it's retarded twin brother the HD7
Glad I could be of some help. The G2 certainly does get higher bandwidth speeds in the "4G" areas, but I've never felt the HD2 was "slow" on the network either.
Plus another annoyance? The trackpad on the G2 randomly "wakes up" and moves when I'm typing. I'd rather that space was used for screen.

The only things that really attracted me to the G2 were the hardware keyboard and the 4G network. But I live like an hour away from Los Angeles, so I doubt that I'll be getting any 4G coverage anytime soon. I'm guessing by 2012.
Also, I've been hearing some wonky things about the trackpad on the G2, apparently there's a proximity sensor inside that responds to shadows and movement.

The keyboard isn't worth it.
I came from the Motorola Q9h, to the Tilt, to the Touch Pro, to the Touch Pro 2... So I was a diehard keyboard man... Then I owned the HD2 since release day.
Now after owning the G2 for a few months? I honestly can say, that as long as I have my HD2, I won't be wanting a physical keyboard.
The 4G honestly is the only reason I could see getting the phone, so since that isn't an issue for you, head on over to the HD2 section and find whatever ROM suits your fancy the most

I went from a ****ty Nokia flip phone to a BB to another BB to the Mytouch3G to the MTSlide. I regretted ever going over to the MyTouch3G because the soft keyboard was laggy as hell (even when I used Swype). I guess that I'm just overly cautious about having yet another laggy phone.
Also, I've been lurking in the HD2 dev forum for a while now. I've just been to afraid to post anything. Lol.

If you like the HD2, then surely the Desire HD is the more obvious upgrade option ? Big screen like the HD2, and a much faster processor than the HD2 (newer generation, don't just compare the clock speeds !).
Personally I love the Vision's hardware keyboard, because I don't lose a big chunk of my screen to an on-screen keyboard. But we all like different things, and it would be a very boring world if every single one of us liked the same phone best !

Much faster? It's not even a full revision different than the original Snapdragon. I haven't seen that it is "much" faster in anything. A bit faster? Yep.
Worth the doubling in price to get? Hardly.
Not to mention, it sounds like the OP is using the T-Mobile network, the DHD won't have 3G on that.

Yes, but the second gen snapdragons eat the competition. It'd be safe to say the G2 is one of the best options if your into the hardware
I just put my HD2 aside for a G2. Suffice to say the HD2 is getting alot of shelf time now The ironic thing is I got tired of waiting for NAND-flashable Android builds for the HD2 and running it off a slow SD card and so the day after I paid full retail for my G2 - I see Cotulla and crew have released MAGLDR(sp?). ROFL
I flashed an MDJ Gingerbread NAND build, ran it on the HD2 for about an hour, then pulled the SIM and put it back in my G2. It's hard to explain, the HD2 is phenomenal but the G2 is an actual Android device so it just feels more comfortable to me running Android builds

This is the exact reason I switched from my HD2 to a G2. As well as being able to have a physical keyboard that did not take up half of the screen.
I am not a huge fan of Windows mobile and although there are different builds and roms for the HD2, none of them made me happy. I love Android and having an actual keyboard, so the best option for me was the G2.
Plus my HD2 lagged a lot.
Had an HD2 before the G2, dont regret ever selling it, I am happier with the G2 then I ever was with the HD2.

Are you currently using T-Mobile with your HD2? I have a HD2 and a G2, my dad is using the HD2 and loves it since its a big screen and all. The only problem he says he's having is that the reception is worse since I put Android on it. Do you have any similar problem? Or did I do something wrong when I put Android up on it?

Where to upgrade after the Touch Pro 2?

I've been using the HTC Touch Pro 2 since last April with T-Mobile. I've absolutely loved the functionality, including ability to customize the ROM(<3 Energy), simple to use web browsing, texting, email, wifi router, bluetooth ability, and many other features that come with the smart phones. I'd die right now during school/work/personal stuff without the calendar.
When I bought it last year, the HD2 was sitting next to it, and the reason I went with the HD2 was the hardware keyboard. Software keyboards annoy the heck out of me unless they're well done. I could type 5 times faster on my TP2 than an ipod touch. But, what is getting to me now after using the TP2 for 10 months?
- Camera: Quality isn't high enough compared to other shots I've seen taken by phones. I switch the lighting settings to tweak it, but it's still grainy. I as in a dark club the other night, and watched someone take pictures that were noticeably clearer than mine.
- Lack of 3.5mm Headset Adapter. I have to use the HTC USB -> 3.5mm adapter to listen with earbuds to music. Annoying.
Like I said, the hardware keyboard is almost necessity, but I could learn to deal with a software if it's not the kind that can be easily fat fingered.
That's all I can think of right now. Any help with the phone upgrade process would be greatly appreciated.
i think your first decision is probably are you going to stay with windows phone 7, android, iOS, or webOS.
Almost all of these software has some nice phones with physical keyboard. 3.5mm headphone jack (it's pretty much standard now with most high-end phones). If you want a good camera, go with the phone with led flash support then you probabaly will be fine.

I liked the TP2 after I got it because it was an operating environment I was used to and familiar with. I haven't used any other one, so I can't comment on it. What are examples of phones with hardware keyboards that have the same, if not better functionality than the TP2, including the things I listed of any OS? The HD2 and HD7 look enticing, but if there's something similar that might suit my needs better, I'm just looking for suggestions.

If the keyboard is what you care about, then perhaps you should simply wait for the HTC 7 Pro to be available. It is basically the Touch Pro2 on steroids. It is the successor to the TP2 and runs WP7. There's a thread with a bunch of useful information HERE.
I'm in same boat as you, trying to figure which phone next. Still cannot decide and will give it another year, mainly because 3G networks are in a state of flux where I live (now still using EDGE). I will likely either go to Android if I can get the sync with MS Office to my liking or WM7 if the apps take off. No interest in other phones.
As for headphones on TP2, I have a nice bluetooth set by Jabra that does away with need for jack.
I was in the same boat as you a couple months ago when my contract ended with my provider. I had been looking at WP7 since the first whiff of it came out, but the more I read about it the more I disliked it. Long story short I greatly dislike all of these current operating systems for varying reasons.
So eventually I decided that the TP2 was as good as it was going to get for me for now, and bought up a couple extra of them. They're relatively cheap, and they all should last me until I cannot physically use them anymore (carrier doesnt support for some reason, or I can't find any good batteries, etc..) or until some company makes something desirable for me.
My advice is that you research at length all of your options before you end up with something you don't like using. It took me a lot of time playing around with android and WP7 before I decided I didn't want any of them. The TP2 is an excellent device and Windows Mobile is an excellent OS, don't let anyone fool you into thinking otherwise.
As far as your complaints, 3.2 MP is enough for me and my carrier's TP2 includes a headphone jack.. So I guess we're not in the same boat in those regards...
maybe an evo shift 4g?

I'm in a similar boat... I love the TP2 for it's design, had a Tilt before so this was a great upgrade. But there's nothing that's coming out from HTC that I've seen or heard of that looks like an upgrade. The 7 Pro is kind of an upgrade, but not the same kind of amazing upgrade like the Tilt to Tilt 2... I would like a slightly larger/better display but also keep the physical kb... I've been lookin at the Atrix (even tho they say you can't put custom roms on it yet), just cuz it sounds pretty sick but I keep hoping a phone w/ a kb comes out. Looks like Dell is gonna bring something out but not til the end of this year I think... I really hope HTC brings out a Tilt 3 w/ a 4-4.3in screen, better camera, runnin android since I don't really like WP7 & a dual processor...lol

The Atrix concept looks very cool, but I've been pretty underwhelmed by the recent Motorola handsets. They just feel cheap and clunky compared to HTC phones. But maybe they can step it up a notch. Similarly, the Dell Streak seemed like nothing special that just about every other manufacturer couldn't match or do better. And there were some things, like the proprietary dock connector, that were outright inexcusable. Again, they are going to need to kick it up a notch to get me remotely interested in their products.
I agree that a slightly larger screen (maybe around 3.9 or 4.0 in) would be really nice for watching video, and make the on-screen keyboard easier to use (for the times you don't feel the need to flip out the hardward keyboard). But I think a 4.3 in display with a hardware keyboard would result in a really big, thick, heavy phone.
But I have to say, the Desire Z is a pretty sick upgrade over the Tilt2. Maybe not in terms of form factor, but in terms of just about everything else.
I have no upgrades available for a long time so I'd be buying retail. The 7 pro looks quite interesting. Maybe I'll stop buy the T-Mobile store and see how the desire z feels. Is there much of a change over the TP2 to go to a Desire Z?
I've somewhat fixed the no 3.5mm jack issue by buying a bluetooth headset that supports a2dp. I guess that'll hold me over until later this year if I upgrade.

The keyboard on the Desire Z is smaller than the Touch Pro2, but most people who own it say that it still feels very nice. I would miss my dedicated number row, though. I've gotten very used to it.
i have loved my touch pro 2 for the past year or so and all the devs, everyone at XDA made me love it even more. my girlfriend has an iphone and ill never ever trade my phone for iOS and theres not any other phone carried by ATT that is any better than the touch pro 2 i think..but then the Atrix came along. its a sad realization but you cant compare the specs of our touch pros to any of these new devices. sure im sacrificing the full qwerty kb we all know and love and moving on from winmo 6.5 (that ive grown with since 5.x) but i feel like its for the better. especially with all the wear and tear ive put my phone thru, sure is one hell of a trooper thats for sure, its time to set it down and ive made my decision. expecting my atrix to arrive this coming monday. so with this goodluck to all with whatever you decide!
Phone after TP2
I'm also investigating new phones (although doing so would also require me to give up my sero plan, which seems unlikely at the moment).
For me on Sprint, there seems to be a few major choices that include a physical keyboard that I was looking at:
Android:
-HTC EVO Shift
-Samsung Epic 4G
WP7:
-[upcoming] HTC 7 Pro
The EVO shift has a similar sized screen to the TP2, while the Epic 4G goes a bit larger (4") and has a faster processor (1 Ghz vs. 800 Mhz on the Evo Shift). Nonetheless, I'm still pretty turned off by the touchwiz UI on the Epic 4g -- a bit to cartoony for my tastes.
Since the 7 pro is essentially the successor to the TP2, the dimensions are pretty similar albeit with an upgraded processor (1 Ghz).
I'm currently running XDAndroid on the TP2, so I have a sense of how android works, but I've never tried WP7 -- after classic WinMo I'm still kind of hesitant to go back to Microsoft.
To anyone who has been using WP7 -- any thoughts on the disadvantages/advantages over android?
I guess the most obvious phone would be the HTC 7 pro closely followed by the Desire Z.
Personally i decided to keep my TP2 after 2 years (i can pick a new phone @ my provider in june). The phone does everything i want.
The only program i miss on Windows Mobile is WhatsApp/pingchat

I get the Desire Z. I went to T-Mobile hoping to find one to even hold and play with, but didn't see one. I'm just really hung up on the hardware keyboard when considering an HD7. The hardware keyboard makes me want to pump out paragraphs of forum posts on the phone. The software keyboard makes me hate texting.
Same thougths here, and same conclusions, just like some people wrote: I tried some phones, but the only possible choice would be the Desire Z (7 Pro w/o card slot is a NO GO!). I ended up buying an new display to replace the cracked one in my TP2 (via ebay, from HK), saving LOTS of money, and still having the device I like and am used to.
Someone wrote about TP2 being cheap(er) now, where do you get them and at which price? They're still above 50% of the price at introduction around here in Germany. If they were cheaper, I'd buy one as spare, too.

They go for cheap in the Marketplace forum here in XDA every now and then. There's also eBay. I've seen them as low as $120 recently.
That's an incredible price! They're still well over 250€ new on Ebay, almost 400€ in the cheapest onlineshop I found in Germany! WOW.
I will vote for HTC 7 pro, as you've been used to using a keyboard, it's hard to go back to the on-screen one, and BTW HTC 7 Pro is really amazing

[Q] swap for a droid x2?

I know it is still early in the dinc2 development stages but things are not looking promising. My 14 day Verizon return is creeping up on me.
Should I stick with the dinc2 or trade it in for something else?
The main contender at the moment is the droid x2. From what I have read so far the boot loader is locked. (See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089067). The dual cores, qHD screen and large amount of support for the previous generation are all solid selling points for me.
I have also considered the thunderbolt but have decided against it. There's no LTE in my area yet, the battery life is abysmal, and it is a massive phone.
I am open to other suggestions I have not mentioned as well.
TL;DR: Swap my dinc2 for a droid x2 (or other non-thunderbolt verizon phone)?
I have a dx2 and im thinking of trading it for something else, not sure what i want tho

No way would i get an x, x2, or any other moto. D2 was my last mistake.
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
Despite being dual-core with qHD it's running a weird resolution
Motoblur is so eh to me, everytime I try it in the store it's really slow
The design of the phone is just ugly to me with the really square look and physical buttons
I just received a Droid X2 today and I must say it is the clunkiest phone I have ever used. I cannot believe how much it locks up and how choppy everything is. My Fascinate blows it away.
I wish we had a better root scene over here. The only reason I'm still considering a thunderbolt is because of this. Where is the incredible s in terms of perm root?
dinc 2 is a great phone, however I've also been thinking about trading to the x2 just for the tegra 2 processor and future gingerbread update. that will be a wonderful phone to work with in the future. i'd love to trade someone my dinc 2 for an x2 but i doubt i'll get that lucky..

I implied the combination of Tegra 2 AND Gingerbread, not just the Snapdragon and gingerbread combo of the INC2. T2 / 2.3 will be pretty rad.
In light of this release by HTC: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098489 I have decided to stick with the incredible 2.
It is difficult to see into the future where dual core phones will actually be utilized to their full potential. I just don't see that happening for a while.
The battery life and aesthetics are too appealing to make the switch.
Its really that difficult when no one knows how android will take out of there bag
Nitro a lot of what makes the Fascinate so good is what devs like you corrected in major flaws from Samsung and Verizon.
Can't wait to see permanent root on the DInc2, to see what the dev community can do with this powerhouse.

for a solid week, I was debating between buying a DInc2 or waiting for the Droid X2 to come out. The day the X2 released, I was at my local retailer waiting to buy one and turned out to be the first in my state to purchase one. I set it up, activated it, took it home and played with it for a good 2 hours... then i brought it back to the store and returned it for a DInc2. reason? HTC Sense vs Moto Blur. Blur is horrible in my opinion. its clunky, utilitarian, lacks the visual aesthetics, ease of use, and functionality of HTC sense. syncing facebook contacts was a nightmare on Blur. Sense practically synced for me with barely any user input.
The fit and finish of the Incredible 2 is miles ahead of the bulky clunky case of the X2, and despite the bigger screen, the Inc2's display does not disappoint in any way.
While the X2 has superior hardware, (dual core processor, bigger screen), I would compare it to running Windows XP Home on an Alienware computer. nothing but wasted potential.
I say, unequivocally, just wait until these developers find a way to perm root the Incredible 2, or until HTC does away with their locked bootloaders, and you'll have everything you want in a phone and more.
Return it and wait for the Bionic.
I just got my dx2 a few days ago and I'm happy. Of course blur sucks and slows the phone down to a crawl. I've been reading this is a huge problem but seems to be related to blur. I installed Launcher Pro and for some unknown reason, my phone speed/responsiveness has increased drastically. It no longer freezes or hangs. With that said, here are the pro's/cons in my opinion.
Pros: New screen is awesome, very fast after I installed launcher pro and if the DX2 gets half the attention the DX did, there will be some pretty awesome roms coming out pretty soon.
Cons: I've heard rumors the tegra 2 processor does not play well with 4G LTE and has some issues (but what phone doesn't have any issues. That's why I think they switched to the OMAP4)... No 4G LTE and of coarse the locked bootloader (but the DX got around that pretty good).
In my opinion, the speed, screen and potential for custom ROMS were the selling point.
The low RAM on the X2 is the bottleneck from hell. After blur and the GPU, the RAM available to the phone for use is comparable to the D1. You literally can't multitask on it. I had an X2 and returned it for an Incredible (I wasn't eligible for a 3g phone because it was an early early upgrade).
Software matters a lot and people tend to forget this. Look how much more lightweight Android is than PC Windows. Sometimes a phone with less powerful specs is still faster because of the software. Blur is a resource hog.
Isn't there a perm-root for the X2, you could just install a custom ROM that gives you stock Android.

That's what I LOVE about my inc2, always above 200mb free if not 250-300.

[Q]Anyone upgrade from the hd2?

I am on my 3rd hd2 due to previous BS.
I have not seen any other phone even catch my attention. My HD2 is a beast, but I know the Galaxy SII does have faster download speeds.
So, anyone make the switch?
I made the switch as well. I originally got the HD2 because I was tired of the iPhone 4 not having 3G service on T-Mobile.
It's a night and day difference between the phones in terms of download speed. I got max 4-6mbps down with the HD2, but I get 10-16mbps down with the S II. Also, you'll find the picture quality of both the screen and camera are better on the S II
I made the switch as well. It has been a hard decision but the phone is starting to grow on me. I became very well versed with the HD2 and it's nuances. I started with Cookies Home Tab mods on Winmo 6.5 to learning how to mount and unmount APKs and scripting with 2.3.7. The HD2 was my journey into Android modding. Funny enough, My first smart phone was a G1 but at that time I wasn't into and didn't know what I could do with android. Coming from Symbian, I was like, hey, it just works.
As time passed though, I was promoted to be in the field as an I.T. consultant. The HD2 became more of a functional necessity rather than just a cool phone I could mess with from time to time. With that said, things just had to work... and at times, had to work fast and also multi-task better. The HD2 started to feel its age. I needed a phone that was an all out improvement over the HD2 so I wouldn't look back.
Unlocked boot-loader, larger screen with higher resolution and brightness, faster processor, faster data speeds (and even better signal attenuation), lack of hard buttons (wear and tear), lighter phone (higher chance of surviving a drop) and just all around newer technology. And the best thing for me was MORE AVAILABLE RAM
I was happy I made the choice. With a good ROM with the sgs2, it's simply graceful. With the increased RAM and performance, I can do everything a lot easier. I still have my HD2 in pretty decent condition running ICS but it's just for kicks. The Tmous version of the Galaxy S2 is very young so with that you won't get nearly as much legacy knowledge or development as you do from the HD2 subforums. I'd say give it time but with the available ROMS, they have this phone very solid.
It's an all around better phone in every aspect. Even the audio is better and louder. The ONLY thing I miss is a notification LED but I'm learning to live without. HD2 owners should already know the LED notification issues we've had with previous ROMS as it is.
EDIT:
A few things you'd have to get use to in the change. The phone (without a cover) will fit anything that you used to hold your HD2 in granted the HD2 had a cover. BUT if you decide to get a back over for the phone, you'll need something else to hold it in because it's larger as it wider and longer. The audio plug port is now on top instead of the bottom so if you had a car setup, you might have to move things around a little. The charger is a micro-usb port and it's almost in the same location as the HD2. The power button is on the top right side of the phone so that will take a little getting used to. It does have a 2MP front facing camera so that's another bonus. Without a cover the phone is still easy to hold and doesn't feel like it might slide out of your hand. It's quite light for it's size and thin. The buttons on the phone are capacitive with the exception of the volume rocker (on the upper left of the phone) and the power button. The speaker is on the bottom left of the rear of the phone but it's quite loud. 1 LED flash as opposed to 2 with the HD2 but still seems to put out the same amount of lumens. The camera is more recessed than the HD2 and is flush with the phone body so no more scratched camera frame. The SD card IS hot swappable so no need to remove the battery. The plastic back cover is very thin so take care in taking it off and on (no brushed aluminum like the HD2). It's a lot but that's pretty much all I can think of for now. Hope this helps.
Great info. . . Same with me, the HD2 is the first true Android phone I started Modding(I still have my g1. But face it, there was no competition for the iPhone for along time). Before, I was a total iPhone man. I turned my iPhone into what it should have been as I did with my HD2.
My HD2 is a extremely solid performer. It is running at about 98% functionality, LED works just fine as does everything else unlike most earlier android flashed HD2's.
Sounds like I will be making the switch as soon as I come across a worthy deal.
Just tough for me to move from a device that treated me so well.
I had an hd2 before this, and still use the hd2 for experimentation and goofing around. (Playing with ICS on it right now.) I loved the hd2, there wasn't a single phone you could do more with.
This phone, however, is amazing. I love this thing. Just don't expect so many roms to choose from. You'll love the upgrade, it's definitely the smoothest phone I've used to date.
I had it pretty cool not all that

Now to find one for a good deal. I'm also thinking the white one is the way to go.
Development here compared to the hd2 is night and day if u messed with the hd2 a lot as I did u probably will find ur self bored here just a heads up.... hd2 and vibrant days I could flash rom's daily here I've been on the same one for over a month. The Roms are quality tho just not that many.

I recently dropped my HD2 & spiderwebbed the screen. Oddly enough, it still actually functions perfectly, but it's hard to view the screen and it has sharp edges on the screen itself. I'll be keeping it as a backup MP3 player/portable HD, camera, etc.
Since there is no real equivalent on TMobile, I went with the T989. Performance and capabilities are big improvements, 1080P video, dual core, 4G, etc. Hardware is really far beyond the HD2, but it's been a bit frustrating learning Android, and trying to replicate how perfectly customized for my wants/needs I had my HD2. I'm getting there, though, and I'm getting more and more confident I'll get this new phone dialed in as well or better than the HD2.
I switched from hd2 to the sensation and that didn't last long. Now I'm with this beauty.
Hd2 is still a beast though and now my son uses it.

As far as customization goes. I work until it's damn near perfect.
I run SPB with a Nexus ROM on my HD2. I swapped out the MMS APK and a few others. It runs a bit overclocked just fine too. Kinda funny though, if I juice it to the Max. I keep up with a Sprint Evo just fine
Also does the current widget work on the GS2? Since it never worked on the turd pile Vibrant I tried to replace my HD2 with?
No current widget doesn't work. Not on any samsung phones that I'm aware of.

I had an HD2 all rooted and moded and then the SG2 came out and I sold it. It was an awsome phone and I loved it even more when I had android on it. Windows blows on that phone lol.
I had pretty bad experiance with hd2 . Then i move to blackberry 9780 and now on this one.
Problem on hd2 was hardware issue so nothing to do with OS. I simply hate htc hardware.

Absolutely adored the device. Countless hours of winnow, then android flashing entertainment.
I bought the sg2 just to mess, expecting to return it, but the speed, elegance, enhancemence and speed won me over.
Sold my hd2 for just about what I paid.
I believe I'll be quite happy.

Just be patient. Remember how long it took to get an sd build of android to boot on it? Or the fact that it took cotulla and the guys over a year to get magldr so we could boot them off nand? Plus the advantage there was now the hd2 has 100% aosp base, so it's very easy to work with, hence all the roms. Plus, they can port from either the htc desire or the nexus one with very few changes, because the hardware is almost identical. The only phone with very very similar hardware for us is the skyrocket. Once we get cm, (and we will), we'll have an aosp base to work off of.
Ignore the kids, be patient, wait a few weeks, and we'll see what rolls in. This phone has barely been out 2 months... 2 months after the hd2 was released I hspl was barely started, let alone working.

I physically clapped when I read this. I've been on a lot of sub-forums here at XDA but I've never seen the behavior that I see here. People here are overly sensitive, impatient, belligerent and down right rude and immature. I always had a great amount of respect for the members and developers so I'm a little taken back with the behavior here. I guess any HD2 to prospect SGS2 buyers should take note to that.

So i'm getting fed up with sprint atm since i use my phone alot and while originally my service was great the 3g speed now are unbearable due to how often i need to access files from my servers and just general usage, I'm contemplating on waiting to get an iphone 5 or Grab the Galaxy s3 right now. Hahahahaha! Okay, now that that is out of the way, GS3 for sure. I too used to use iPhones.. 3/4. Then my buddy showed me a GS2 rooted w/ custom rom. Sold. Got the GS3 the day it was released and gave my iPhone 4 to my girlfriend. Obviously, I hate her. I digress though, I love my GS3 and I do not regret the switch. Running custom ICS AOKP rom and I love it!
That is a no brainer imo. I used to have an iPhone and they don't even come close to the SGSIII. If you like to customize your phone you have to go with the SIII or another Android phone but the SIII is the best on the market I think.
hrmm guess i'll skip on the iphone. Hrmm since i'm stayong android that bring me to the question of unlock galaxy nexus on prepaid or subsided s3 on att hrmm.

I went through a similar thought process recently, coming from 4+ years with an iPhone (3G & 4). Made the switch because a) I was bored (not necessarily rational, but always fun to try something new, plus girlfriend needed a new phone), and b) I wanted a bigger screen. I can tell you now that the iPhone 4 feels far too small in my hands and I couldn't go back. Keep in mind that there is a 0% chance the iPhone 5 will have anything larger than a 4" screen, so that may make your decision easier if that is something that is important to you.
I do not regret my decision. At first I found Android side of things to be less "polished", but the customization couldn't be beat. But frankly, now that I've discovered CM10, I feel that I finally gave the phone I've always wanted. While some of the TouchWiz features were neat, I feel that Samsung's theming, etc. really cluttered and complicated things, and that vanilla Android is much more on par with the iPhone in terms of polish and ease of use. I really question some of their design decisions.

I moved from sprint to at&t like 2 weeks ago. Costs the same. Better data speed , coverage, phones and customer care. Only regret is not switching along time ago. AT&T for the win!
I had a 4s and a gs2 on sprint. Now I have a hox and a gs3. Never going back to an iPhone. Restrictive OS. Boring and dull UI. ITunes. No Widgets! No I'm good on all that.only good thing iPhone had going for it was great camera and battery life. IMO maybe android wasn't better in like GB form (even though I think it was), ICS and JB are wwwwaaaayyy better than OSX.

what do you mean by how everything is intergrated in iOS?
as a phone Samsung was always better than iPhone. Battery is replaceable and memory is expandable. AMOLED screen.
iPhone 5 is a big unknown. Remember antenna issues? Or yellow tint screens? Or sudden cracks on the case? Wanna be Apple beta tester?
iPhone 4S got great battery life, smooth OS and tons of apps going for it.
I say wait for the "iPhone 5" if you can and then see what the Samsung response to that phone is =)

Do you like to tweak your phone?
If you want to play with your phone, and have as much control over how it behaves as possible then get an android phone hands down.
The reason I chose the S III was because I enjoyed my S I, and because I know there is a huge community around this phone that is working around the clock customizing third party ROMS. If you want to hack your phone, the S III community is the best.

I decided no more iPhones until they actually make a killer device. This hasn't been done since the iPhone 4. The iPhones are slower and do less. I say gs3 all the way until apple throws in 2gb of ram and a killer processor and graphics chip. I dislike lag and that's what the iPhone will ultimately get you (even the new one).

As has been stated, this might not be the most neutral place to ask this question... still, here's my story:
I work in an office where *everyone* has an iPhone except me, with my faithful GS3. Previously I had an HTC Desire, which is a nice enough phone but doesn't compare all that well with the iPhone 4S... ever since I got my GS3, people are actually jealous of my phone (people that know nothing about cell phones) and are asking the IT guy why they can't have an awesome phone like me... lol
So long story short, the GS3 is superior to the iPhone 4S in pretty much every respect. Unless you want to wait to see what Apple cooks up for the next generation (and you can bet at this point in the game Samsung/HTC will stay ahead of them, they are already ahead), get yourself a GS3 - hands down the best smartphone on the market right now.
Gargamel has a point.. Wrong place to ask since this is a S3 spot. Though my input is basically the same. I had iphone lovers but once they saw my customization and showing them what the phone can really do they got on android. I also went through all iphones and also currently have an iphone 4 along side my S3. Let me say LTE on AT&T is great.... Iphone got 4.xx MB/S while my S3 got 60 MB/S. I use my S3 more than the iphone lets say that lol. I run into so many iphones with problems it isn't even funny. I do repairs on them on the side for fun.
