ok, so when i plug in my g2 into my computer all that pops up when i turn on the usb storage is the external sd, how can i access the internal memory files with my computer?
can i get a quick response please, like, are you guys able to access it? or is mine having a problem? or is this normal?
Its normal, when you connect the phone through USB, the phone acts as a card reader.
so i cannot access the internal sd or memory of the phone?
You will not have access to system files.....
I noticed the same thing. If you use explorer you can copy past or move from within the phone, but I also noticed that I cannot get the phone storage directly. Which is weird coming from a vibrant

Install.. then play with it.
USB storage is mounting the the 8GB SD card to your computer. The ROM is used for apps and the OS.

Vibrant got around this by having 'phone storage', and 'internal SD card', and the regular sd card. you still couldn't get to the phone storage area.
Thanks guys, I came from a vibrant so I was a tad confused

to be safe when i am on pc and using as external storage, i make sure that i eject the phone from the pc(windows=safely remove hardware) and then on phone i pull down notification bar and click on usb disk drive option and change to charge only. then i remove phone from computer. i makes sure the phone and computer both know you are removing USB and so they both stop trying to access the sdcard
Thanks. It works everytime I remember not to just unplug it. Lol

Ok i'm a bit of a noob so bare with me here... i have a 32GB SD card i'm using on my Galaxy E4GT but it only shows up as a folder in my "internal" SD so i cant really use it other then dead storage to make space.. i want the internal SD to be gone and just be phone memory so then my External SD card can be my other main memory .. so in a nutshell i guess i'm asking to be able to get rid of the "internal" SD and give its space to the actual phone and for the only other memory to be my External SD.. can this be done? and how?
I really don't understand what you're trying to ask, but I think you're confused about how external storage is being stored.
For starters, the internal SD can not be deleted. It's not even an option, it's like, taking the transmission out of a car. The car won't work. Your phone needs it's internal storage.
Your external storage is *mounted* (Google it) as /sdcard/external_sd/, meaning Android conveniently creates a "shorcut" folder to your external SD in your internal SD. Very similar to how when you plug in your phone to your WIndows computer, you see a new "Drive" in "My Computer".
Now that I re-read your message, I believe you're thinking your /external_sd/ folder is limited to the size of the internal SD (which is 16 GB). Like I explained, it's simply a shortcut for you. You're *not* limited to the size of the internal SD. In there is your 32GB external SD.
Hope I helped.
I think his problem is kind of what I was asking in my music thread. On the OG epic everything downloaded went straight to external sd storage. While I know it didn't have dual storage like this phone. This phone seems to not use the link to the external storage correct.
For example everytime I DL music from a playlist no matter what app it goes to the internal memory, not to the external memory. It seems that there needs to be a way to have the external memory link not sit inside a place in the internal memory so that downloads go there. Right now most of the time they sit in .../sdcard rather than find there way to .../sdcard/external_sd (or whatever it is).
I saw a link somewhere for a different device to swap internal and external but didn't get a chance to read it yet. that may solve the problem but i'm not sure. I wish it worked as easy as the OG epic so I could put my music playlists onto external and have them play/show up correctly.

Hit the nail on the head.. Thats exactly what I'm talking about... The phone turns your External SD Card into dead storage space.. You can't run anything from inside it (Like Music or Games) and you can't make it your main SD Memory. What I want to know is how can I merge the "Internal SD" with the "Phone's Memory" to make them one.. So that the only two forms of memory on the phone are "Phone Memory" and "External SD Card".
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
you can't... it wouldn't make sense to want to be able to do that..
you could, through some hackery, switch the mount points and make external show as /sdcard and internal as /sdcard/external_sd for whatever reason.. but without repartitioning your phone... you aren't going to be able to do much more..
im still kind of lost on what is wrong with the internal sd?
btw music plays just fine from the external, and you can install games to and from the external.. i think you may have a misunderstanding of how it works..

What? I am able to play all my music stored on the /external_sd/music folder without issues. I am using poweramp though
I guess if you could modify the fstab file you might be able to have it in a way so it ignores the 'internal SD' and links it directly to the real SD card. Now if the phone will be able to work properly afterward is another issue but I don't see why not.
I understand music plays fine one moved there. I haven't tried poweramp yet. But for instance with double twist or Amazon mp3 when you sync playlists or any song it saves to internal memory without any option to sync to external. If you move the music to external the playlist won't work anymore. Yes the song will play but no playlist without remaking it.
I have no problems with using internal but it fills up pretty quick. As far as games I don't have any comment as I just leave those on internal memory. Thanks for the responses though. And maybe I'll try and use power amp to sync playlists.

Yeah, moving it after youve sync'd it most definately won't work, if it's saved to that location then you move it from that location, it's going to keep looking for it in the original location.
I've never used Amazon Mp3 or DoubleTwist, so I can't say maybe you guys are missing an option. Make sure you throroughly read and check all available settings in both programs.
All I know is that the externsl SD does not become dead storage, as I use mine everyday and play music, videos, view pictures, move/zip CWM backups, everything.
Maybe you can try uninstalling Amazon Mp3 /Doubletwist, reinstall, then before running it even once move it to your external SD. Then run it/set it up once it's in your external SD. Maybe that'll force it to save to your external SD.
I know its not dead space, haha. I wasn't completing about that, and I searched all over, its those apps. Google music is the same. There were numerous complaints on all there websites about not having a choice where to DL to, making the extremal in dual storage phones like ours, become useless when trying to get playlist off our computers onto them.

Ok as for music i use Google music and my offline music wont show when moved to External SD.. games is the same.. they just dont look for the External SD directory... im assuming that there is just one big hunk of memory in the phone and its partitioned into two parts (Phone Memory and Internal SD). If i can get rid of the partition that separates the two and just make it so that its all just phone memory without Internal SD.. the phone would be faster wouldn't it? and when i use my SD card it will just show up as SD card leaving only two sources to save or move things around to? again i could be way off and totaly wrong.. im only a noob at this point but im open to wisdom and learning as much as i can since im going to be a android user FOREVER
I am using "Media Monkey", and have no problems copying to the external SD. As a matter of fact, all of my music is sitting on the external. Its also (I think) the best music app available...

I guess my question is the 500mb of RAM just partitioned off the mass storage sd internal like the 2gb of memory for apps? Or is it 500mb chip in there seperate some where? Which im guessing it ia since it would have to run at a faster clock than the internal sd can

Its my understanding that the memory used by the applications and RAM is shared on the same chipset that it's separate from the storage (internal SD) chipset. Checking the teardowns on http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung-Epic-4G-Touch-Teardown/6481/2 shows that 16GB chip being separate but the one that holds the RAM and internal app storage is not described there.
Actually what the op is asking can work. It would need kernel changes tho and mappings of partitions changed. So that the primary partition (where the OS is installed) becomes say 1gb. Then the rest goes to internal storage (where all apps go.) Then nothings left for a "internal SD." Then the SD card can be used as the only storage.

OMG! YES! I agree this phone does handle memory in a retarded way. Like for example when you move apps to sd it shows your available internal space but when you switch the app it goes to the actual sd card. So you'll notice that as you're switching them the amount available in internal is not decreasing but when you check your sd space you'll notice its memory decreased. However all my music is on the sd and I have no issue with it playing or creating playlists. Maybe you moved the files to sd and you had created the playlist while it was on internal so now it can't find it.. For the most part you can go into most apps setting and change between which memory you want to store internal or sd.

Is there any way to mount the S3 as a disk drive, like I could do on my HTC Evo.
The problem I am having as my new car only recognizes devices as mass storage, mounted as a disk drive. So when i plug it in for music it doesn not recognize the files.
My Galaxy is rooted so any if there is anyway to have an option to mount as a disk drive would be great.
Thanks

Thats because there is no UMS, as mentioned earlier in your rant. However, MTD has worked pretty well for me, transfered 2000+ songs over using MediaMonkey. You can also transfer other file types in explorer or use ES File explorer to wirelessly transfer files between computers on a shared network. I suspect that the downside of UMS (having to unmount storage from the phone in order to connect it to a PC) may have caused enough problems to convince Sammy to give up on it altogether.

Sounds like a problem with Link2SD. This doesn't happen on my phone. My phone boots very quickly.
Curious, why are you moving apps anyway? Have you filled up the 16gig already or are you just so used to a phone with limited storage that you do it by habit? I ask because I've got about 80 apps on my phone including about 10 big apps, and have only used about 1.8 of the 12 gig internal storage available for apps.
I had limited space.. but Link2SD I can play with ROMS and do a wipe minus ext4 partition and than reinstall link2SD and relink all my apps.. no slow Titanium that locks up restore or other slow app backup restores.

Ahh.....lots of wiping and rom flashing. Could it be that reflashing roms and not restoring apps normally is the cause of the constant optimizing on boot? Something not getting properly linked? Going from odexed to deodexed roms?
Try this...
This is for the international version, but it might work (not really sure, I didn't read but I remember seeing this on the xda news page for the s3)

It basically makes your external sd available as usb mass storage.
Not working for the sprint s3 yet. I've been trying to get it to work from the first day I got the s3. I love this phone for most part... but Samsung not allowing ums on it with usb is the biggest screw up ever on this phone. It's like the Greek hero Achilles with his one major flaw...

Mount internal or copy full "image"
Hi you guys!
Been reading a lot on this topic and its odd but it seems noone has a solution to these issues.
I have a similar problem.
Used the internal storage for photos due the speed differences and made a factory reset.. Normaly no problems but i forgot the rescent photos and that dropbox only backs up while on WiFi.
And all this happnes during time at the hospital while my wife gives birth tomour wonderful daughter, AND I DELETED ALL THE PHOTOS!
So if anyone can serve me up with a solution to eigher mount the internal storage in some thing less complicated than rocket science or some way to rip the full memoryblocks to a image file to be able to "rescue" the photos that way by mounting that image.
So if any of you guys have any thing to recommend id love that. ; )
Ill keep digging the forum now...
You can also try this -

I use ES File Mgr to move the jpg's to the DCIM/Camera folder and then use Dropbox to auto-synch to my PC. Anything in DCIM/Camera shows up in my Dropbox as soon as I get within range of a wifi hotspot. I think Google+ also syncs the pics.
Before owning the Note 2, I had the S3. The problem with the scared happens on both phones.
When I first got the Note, I removed the sdcard from the S3 and put it straight into the Note.
No media showed up. Formatted in phone, transferred media, all working as it should.
Today, add a video to card, doesn't show. Add a photo, doesn't show.
Format card, transfer media. Nothing shows up.
Am reluctant to buy another card as I tried three Cards in the S3, and the problem was present with all of them.
PS using root explorer I can find all the media, and play them in their respective apps.

Ive had issues like this on my EVO. Try installing a "media scan" app from the market. It rescans all media content on the phone and then if you want you can remove the app after its done. I had 2 years worth of photos on my 16GB SD class 10 and no pictures or video thumbnails / pictures at all would show. Ran the app and fixed all the issues.
I did try a couple of those apps yesterday.I dont know if either one worked.I mean I know nothing showed up, but it was as though they never actually run.
Same issue
:crying:
I tried formatting several times and copied the data back, nothing helped. Also copying files from my comp to the sd card and internal storage in the phone is very slow. I bought the device yesterday, its stock unrooted.
I don't believe media (pictures/video) show up until mediascanner detects them and sticks in some internal database.
So just copying files onto your external card and popping it in isn't going to work.
media scanner is normally triggered during a reboot, and some apps can trigger it. (generally via 'rescan media' buttons).
Also make sure you don't have a .nomedia file there, as that causes media scanner to skip the directory.
( media scanner can really grind on directories with tons of files )

It sounds like the Sensation card just has slower transfer rates. While your wildfire has faster transfer rates but you are experience issues on the phone side.
Just to confirm, you have formatted both cards the same way and one works and the other doesn't? If possible try to format the card from the phone. Have you tried a sandisk card?

Also on top of that, when you formatted the SDCard did you format in the PC or in your phone through recovery? You will want to format through recovery.
I would recommend upgrading to an ext partition and then formatting again (if you don't need the ext). I have found that even formatting the SDCard on some roms (because the way they work) it doesn't wipe everything and upgrading the to ext actually changes the file system of the SDCard rather than a quick format. Then only copy your media back to the card. Dont copy everything like .android, data, and stuff like that. Just what you want to keep.

Is there any chance you have a counterfeit Sandisk card? Did you buy it from an authorized dealer? If buying from Amazon make sure you only purchase directly from amazon, LLC and not a third party vendor.
For reference which sandisk card do you have what class is it rated at?

No the card is legit, i got it in the box when i bought the HTC Sensation and worked fine on the sensation. It has good copying speed if i put it in another device like my wildfire even now. If your internal memory is slow I would consider that cause for concern. Perhaps try running benchmarks and comparing your results to those in the benchmark thread. It may be worth returning it for another phone if you can't find a solution soon.

Isn't the speed difference just to do with the way the Note 2 connects to the pc? I.E MTP as opposed to mass storage? I seem to recall my G.F's original Note is dog slow at data transfer in MTP but much faster in USB mode....shame the Note 2 can't do this, it's one of my reservations about buying it.

I would imagine its not "the norm" and yet I have had the same issue on both the S3 and Note 2.
Whilst, it is now working, I am having to use Directory Bind, for it to do so.
I put in a new 64GB card on Saturday, recognised straight away in Settings/Storage, formatted fine in the phone giving me 59+GB of free space.
Put media on it...nothing shows.
I cant ever see my phone not being rooted so it can be worked around, but it just seems strange that I have had this on both phones and yet nobody else seems to suffer from it.

For whatever reason I don't think Samsung enabled USB mass storage mode on either the S3 or the Note 2. It's the one thing that's holding me back from buying one at the moment because I use iTunes Agent to sync with iTunes, and that requires the device to be in mass storage mode when connected to the pc (or you can take the sd card out and put it in a reader, but I don't like to take the back off too many times as most phones end up getting really creaky). It's a real shame because I'm just itching to get one.
Have a look in the GS3 forum - I think there's a thread where someone has created an app that enables you to toggle USB mass storage mode, but I think you might have to be rooted and have a custom kernel. Don't quote me, that's from memory

Can I ask if anyone else suffers from the same problem as raised in the OP?
I would imagine its not "the norm" and yet I have had the same issue on both the S3 and Note 2.
Whilst, it is now working, I am having to use Directory Bind, for it to do so.
I put in a new 64GB card on Saturday, recognised straight away in Settings/Storage, formatted fine in the phone giving me 59+GB of free space.
Put media on it...nothing shows.
I cant ever see my phone not being rooted so it can be worked around, but it just seems strange that I have had this on both phones and yet nobody else seems to suffer from it.

There are a couple of threads about this I think now. I browsed some last night. Sorry, I'm only on my phone at the moment so it's a bit awkward to try and find a link for you (what with having a Sensation with only a 4.3" screen They'll be on the first page or two I think.
My girlfriend's original Note had a similar problem with photos and media after connecting an external hard drive. Going into settings/apps and clearing data on the media storage app followed by a reboot sorted the problem for her.
Okay guys so, I haven't been able to determine my issue currently. But so I'm pretty sure rom doesn't matter. I'm on wicked currently, but for whatever reason when I have much storage on my micro SD, it starts to behave oddly. It's a patriot 32 gig. When I go to open the gallery with as little as 4 gigs on the external. It'll freeze up and may or may not ever load my pictures. It refused to play a video I'd just recorded. And when I plugg the phone into the computer to try to transfer files it behaves oddly. Sometimes I'll open a folder, it shows it is empty, and then when I go to copy said empty folder it will start to move the info and show there actually is a lot of stuff in the folder. Sometimes it'll stop transferring and say 'data type cannot be identified' or something to that effect. I *think* this is only with my external SD. I've reformatted several times without luck any info on this? Thanks guys.
