Oh no not another loose hinge thread!
I actually CAN live with it... I still think this phone is pretty awesome and I can just use my index fingers to keep it up when typing on my bed and it's not too ridiculously loose that it moves around by itself.
However, after hearing so many people say confidently that they'll eventually fix it... I wanna ask the question of how many of you actually think they'll address this issue.
I know some people say it's not even an issue the phone is suppose to be like that... some people will say that it isn't because some hinges aren't loose... and the other people that say that even it if isn't loose now it'll become loose.
Also the issue with the 4GB ROM... think that'll be address?
This phone isn't quite as popular as the iPhone and the issue at hand isn't quite as drastic as the loss of reception while holding the phone issue. Apple at first tried to play it off as "you guys aren't holding your phone right!" I'm pretty sure HTC would do the same thing. The phone isn't quite as main stream as the iPhone either so I for one really doubt for there to be a "fix". Not that I wouldn't want one... but just saying.
TL;DR - Who really think they'll fix the issues with the hinge and 4GB ROM
No and no.
I've begun to think a permanent root is also impossible. Without having to rip it apart or using that expensive wire and chip.

I thought the 4Gb thing had been pretty much put to rest? Nothing really to fix, just need real root so we can get rid of all the junk taking up most of that 4Gb. As far as the hinge issue, they aren't going to do anything. My wife is a T-Mobile employee and they are training people that the official stance is that the issue does not exist. The phones hinge is that way by design from HTC. Now their is plenty of proof out their that some are worse than others, but almost none are so bad that it actually hinders the use of the phone. Mine is loose, but I have gotten used to it. They have been pretty loose with their exchange requirements, so its really not hard to get a replacement with minimum hassle if you believe you have a real defect. But as far as official acknowledgement and "fixes " for these "issues", I think the chances are slim to none.

I'm not too saavy with all the mechanics and complicated code behind rooting but I hope that someone gets the permaroot down. If there's a will there's a will? *Shrugs* At least we have the VISIONary temp root for now. Hell if we're going to crack the phone open for a root I might just crack the whole phone down and try to make the hinge stronger just for kicks.

First... I like how it said Sent from my rooted space banana using telekinesis at the end. Second... I thought that T-Mobile would do that, the phone and issue just isn't too drastic enough for HTC and T-Mobile to fix such issues. As far as the 4GB is concerned, I read that it was some partition crap on another thread and probably misinterpreted that... but still I would like to believe that this phone would be capable of more space than 1.2-1.5GB's if the space was better utilized. Who knows, I hopped from a BlackBerry/iPhone platform to this so I'm still pretty new to all this.
No way. The phone is out for one mere month. Come on ! What was it that took all your hope away?
We have so many geeks working on this little phone and I don't believe their perspiration is pointless.

To the OP regarding the hinge issue: invest 99 cents in some velcro tape and put just the tiniest bit between the screen and keyboard. Voila! Your keyboard stays open as you type hanging upside down like a winged nocturnal rodent. Then call HTC and offer your services as hardware engineer extraordinaire.

Well I'm not quite as bugged by it more that the point of the thread was to see who really thinks that HTC's going to address this issue.

If it is possible to update the stock ROM via OTA, then it's is possible to root it and install third party ROM.

Agree, but I have to say, I chuckled when I had this thought while reading the wiki etc.: What if they DID screw up and, in fact, the device CAN'T be updated due to a bug in the NAND locking? Honestly, that'd be just fine with me, because it'd mean that they can't screw up our temp root, and frankly, temp root plus wifi tether is all I need. I realize that others want more, and don't get me wrong, I'd certainly try a Cyanogen or other well-cooked ROM if it becomes possible.
What I *don't* want to have happen is an OTA that closes the temp root loophole, but still doesn't let us figure out how to do permanent root, effectively locking us out of the device.
Brad
All I can say is that my next phone will not be an HTC phone.
There's a way around everything just hasn't been figured out yet. The phone isn't even a month old yet. Give it some time. We WILL have perm root.

The velcro doesn't add any thickness at all the way I did it. But it does make the velcro sound when closing the keyboard, it's not really noticeable after the first few times. Will post pics when I get a chance.
edit: here are pics, not terribly difficult to figure out where to put the velcro to keep the keyboard open...

Okay so don't nobody want to talk about what they don't like... Well here's mines comparing it to the epic 4g
The phone (4G touch) is the coldest out, just want to put that out there.
The graphics or camera don't meet the expectations as a part2 of this phone.
that's the only thing I can say thats wrong with this phone...
I'm not trolling, just giving my opinion.
Just got the phone today so don't cuss me out because I said this.

Graphics or camera?!?
I think you nedx to play nova 2 hd and take a few 1080p videos and then check back in....
The camera is the best I seen on a phone (in person)
And graphics are amazing... Better than any dual core phone imo

Aside from the fact that when I read OP I was all like "what is this I don't even", if we are to assume that he intends to take exception with the "graphics or camera" I must profess, with as stiff an upper lip as I can muster, that I would prefer he were to GTFO with his trolling.
If by some peculiar stretch of the internet's good will OP has truly spoken with veracity of his mind and thoughts, well, I think it goes without saying that the sooner his opinion be disregarded the better.
I've never seen a better cellphone camera, hands down, ever. I'm pretty blown away. So far as "graphics" are concerned--as vacuous as such a statement is--we'll assume he means anything to do with 3D graphic rendering and/or reproduction. Also the finest performance I've ever seen on a cell phone. Sure, it isn't qHD, but if that is a surprise to you it would suit you well to stop purchasing bleeding edge smartphones without knowing what the hell you are talking about.
The bad:
Supplies charging cable too short.
I guess no phone can be perfect
My dislike is the screen wake lagg, and which will just doubtedly be fixed in a rom or kernel and it won't make me any food??? I'm waiting though..

I just wish this phone was able to make me a sammich and get me a beer.
The camera is pretty sweet, though the Epic was good too. (My N8 smashes it, but then again that's that phone's main selling point.)
I haven't used it long enough to check out the radios, but it seems like Samsung pulled it together.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
I agree - the bad being the shortest charging cable I've ever seen! Barely reaches the top of the nightstand...
Fortunately easily solved on Amazon - actual Samsung branded car charger cord for $4, home charger with longer cord for $6, $1.50 for a longer Samsung USB cable...
I was also disappointed that it didn't come with a micro SD card. My buddy's DroidX I think has 16gb onboard, and came with a 16gb card too. To me, 16gb onboard is more than I need, but for a "superphone" dolled up with all these extras and details, figured they wouldn't go cheap on the power cord and no SD card.
I'm only partly disappointed that the screen resolution isn't 960x540 like the Bionic and a few others. It's not really any disadvantage, and I'd easily pick the rich colors and ridiculously black blacks over a higher res anyday - so much easier on the eyes. But mostly on principal - I'm still shaking my head that the iPhone 4 has been out so long, and it should have been 3 weeks (I'm exaggerating) before other phones came out with screens of either similar pixel density or resolution. It's not rocket science, and Apple does all their manufacturing through contract manufacturers for this stuff... a true OEM like Samsung should be able to nail that one pretty easily, right?
Also saw some GPS numbers on another thread that showed only ho-hum GPS reception... the comparison phone walked all over it. But (to stay positive), if there was a radio/antenna to skimp out on, I'm glad it was this one.

My only other complaint is the phone doesn't store my screen timeout settings through reboot nor my contact shortcuts using buddy now. After every boot I have to change this again. It is a bit frustrating. Anyone else having that issue? Other than these mentioned things the phone is amazing and I will have a hard time getting anything else for quite some time I think.

I agree I love this phone but the data speeds are a little low. I got with full bars of 4g on my evo 3d 2200 kbs and on my epic touch I am lucky to get 1100 kbs that is the main thing I see wrong or that I dont like about this phone. But that can be easily fixed with a radio update like they did on the 3d.

I was a little disappointed that the E4GT will not walk my dog for me. I hear the new quad core phones coming out in Q1 2012 will and I can't wait for that. Other than that, this phone blows away anything else I have had....and I have had them all......
Hey Everyone... Originally when I got my GNEX, I could have sworn that when I tried to unlock/root it, it had been easier than a lot of the instructions, but I didn't think too much about it at the time. (I got it directly from a VZW wireless store) I think at this point, it was already unlocked. Now that I've changed phones, I wanted to prep this one for selling, and I was trying to follow instructions on how to reset/relock the phone, but it doesn't seem to let me lock it with the fastboot oem lock commands... but if this is an engineering build, should I even bother? Or can I sell it as is and just state factory unlocked?
Here is an image of my "About Phone" after flashing back the google images that I downloaded from here: https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/mysid-icl53f-factory-65895fa8.tgz

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask, but I tried -looking- for a factory unlocked CDMA version to judge it against, and can't even seem to find any, am I just missing something? Are people selling them somewhere else?
You won't find a "Factory Unlocked" model, AFAIK they don't make them. What you have is somewhat unique, although not that useful since it's a Nexus device. If you want more info on what exactly you have this thread has a decent overview if you read the first 2 pages: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1461386 Bottom line, your fine to sell it as is.
To the right person you will get more just because it is an engineering model! If I were you I would bank on that!!

I personally am the type of person you want to sell this to. I buy tons of stuff for hundreds more just because I collect tech.

No I don't sorry.
Only reason I threw out the $800 number is because, really its not that much more you'd pay buying a "normal" phone really.
I still remember paying something like $700 after tax for the Xperia x10 (ouch bad device) and another $700 for the Xperia Arc (Better device but still too much IMO)
$800 is not that big of a jump, and you are getting something truly unique.
***On a side note: I bought the Xperia x10 and my wife's first iphone, the white 3GS the same day...I think the total was like $1400. Imagine my surprise learning my brand new "latest tech" android didn't support multitouch....mmm still feel that burn! Oh well I guess 2 finger touch ended up being supported later, but by then I was on the Samsung Captivate. Loved the Captivate!***

Used daily for about 3 weeks daily, with a screen protector installed @ verizon when I bought it. Somehow it still managed to get a tiny line in it near the front camera in the upper right... you have to have the light hit it just right to see it, I tried getting it in the pictures here but could not. I took the screen protector off now to show how clean the real screen is, there's some dust on it though.
The pictures came out a bit too big that I'd want to post here, you can see them here:

So I sent it in to Samsung for repair and I noted that I had several different problems, such as screen flickering, home button sticking, power button falling off and random reboots. They received my phone yesterday and now today they claim that it is fixed and it says this in my notes " SOLUTION: Replaced Component - Replaced Cosmetic" and now they are sending it back, which is a great turnaround time but no one can tell me what they actually replaced or repaired??? I have made 4 calls and not one person can tell me what was done to the phone. I used to work for Nextel (before Sprint scooped em up) and I was a lead technician for them and whenever we repaired a phone or replaced a phone we always wrote down EXACTLY what was done and what parts were used to complete the task. I am going through some of the same issues with one of my Verizon units as well and keep getting garbage ass refurbs that solve one problem but add another... I am not trying to nitpick but I paid FULL price for ALL of my phones so that I could keep unlimited and I am going crazy cause I don't want another defective phone from Samsung... What do you guys think was done or what do they usually do (refurbish them)?? I am just hating Samsung right now so I had to vent and get some comments and opinions.... This is my first experience with sending ANY product in for warranty work as I usually have a local authorized facility close to me or Verizon has just kept on sending me there good ol "Certified Like-new refurbs" that they claim to go through a 100 point inspection check.... LMAO! Ya okay.... Then why is it that I have already received 2 bad refurbs from them if they are so "Certified"... It's too bad cause I just want a working S3 in my hands. :crying::fingers-crossed:
I honestly have no problems with my phone. I've heard some people complain about issues. But three phones with two replacements all having issues. I have to wonder if you are even for real.
That been said. It beats the hell out of me what Samsung would do. How you get it resolved. Personally I love my sgs3. And most IPhone owners who try it are wowed by it. Especially now with iOS6.

Well why would I sit here and write up a story cause I feel like trolling about phones on xda.... I have been a member since 2008 and have had about 100 phones since then... So no, I am not making these issues up. In fact there are several threads about refurbs from Verizon and some people are on their 4th or 5th refurb.... I do have one of my 3 that works FLAWLESSLY but I have had bad luck on the other two.... I love the S3 and would NEVER go back to IOS but I am just tired of getting defective replacements.... I am just looking to see what others have been through with Samsung repairing their phones.... I see your an old timer too! Damn 2006.... I don't ever think I have seen someone who has been a member since 2006 but with only 10 posts... I have to wonder if you are for real?? lol

iPhone comment wasn't need it, and since you bring it up apple has the best customer service, iOS is not my cup of tea anymore but apple customer service with my experience is the best, they had replaced my iPod right at the apple store no questions asked

Dude that sucks you got defective devices and it sucks the technicians can't tell you what was changed in my experience with Sony they have noted out sometimes what was wrong but not all the time, HP let's you know what was changed which is great (they have a website) i haven't deal with Samsung before but if their like HTC they will probably sent you reburshed unit, that been said I have never had problems with those units work like new to me, and never had any physical damage, good luck to you and hopefully just like Samsung is getting better at releasing phones they can fix their tech department as well

My God!! If you have nothing to say about ANY experience you have had than just keep your keyboard from typing please.... But yes I have had quite a few phones but not 100.... come on dude!

Ya I guess I am just a lil paranoid cause of my bad luck lately but I will just cross my fingers that I have a good working phone.... The power buttons are terrible on these phones it seems... They are firm once you get them then they slowly start to get REALLY loose and one of mine got to the point where it actually popped out... It is about the size of a grain of rice and I have yet to find it... LOL For the most part I don't regret any of my purchases I just think someone has to get the lemons and it might as well be me right....
They give a more detailed note on what they replaced in the receipt you get when the phone is returned to you, granted it's not much detail, but yeah.
And if it returns and it's still messed up, go to Verizon and T-Mobile and demand to see the manager, tell them the situation and asked them what they could do.

Sounds like a good idea! Some of the problems were intermittent so I find it hard for them to just see it for 30 minutes and ship it back out unless they just replaced everything except the main board...? I will just wait and see... Glad someone could chime in who has had experience with Samsung repairs cause that's what I was looking for was to see if Samsung did a good job for others... Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah, actually got my Galaxy S II and Nexus S serviced not too long ago.
The NS took about 3 weeks to get back to me, from the time I sent it in the to the time I got it back.
Everything was in great working condition, and I believe they replaced a lot of the phone.
The original problem was my lock button didn't work anymore.
I only realized they replaced more than just the lock button because my screen looked brand new as well as the outer part, there were no scratches or dents, when I had a few on it before.
My Galaxy S II took about 5-7 days to get back to me from the time I sent it in to the time I got it back.
I did request for the repair to be expedited as it was a gift for my girlfriend and needed it before a certain day.
They did a great job at helping me and getting my request through.
But I'll give you this, they are horrible at knowing what's going on with the phone, their status updates are pretty lame.

Don't try going to a T-Mobile store to get a phone replaced if it is passed 30 days in California or 14 in other states. I've been a T-Mo rep for many years and I could think of maybe 2 situations in 5 years where I have seen someone get a new phone replaced after 30 days in store (This is from experience working 4 districts in SoCal/LA area and 1 in Norcal).
I wish you luck with the Samsung repairs though. Hopefully they actually did more than little cosmetic repairs to your phone and actually fixed it.
maybe they saw the bezel hitting the button causing the home button to not function properly. That sucks that you had to send them directly to samsung, i love my tmo plan with insurance! Any problems, and the next day i have a new phone. And before people start crying that they are refurbished, i really could care less, as long as it works like it should im happy.
Hello everyone, I just wanted to make a thread for us to comment on the root progress for our devices. This thread is for both developers and regular people to communicate about the progress of the root. Thanks!
So far there is no progress so this thread will stay empty. If there is progress on the future then there will be a thread started in the development section I'm pretty sure.

This thread is to mirror Verizon's side of the root topic, we need to communicate and get on top of this. I understand there is no root, but we need to discuss the path to freedom.

Yeah... I don't really see what there is to talk about either.
When a dev makes progress, they will post something. Until then threads like this are just 'chat rooms'.
But that's OK, in the end I don't have to read the thread, right? So carry on.

This is where we are at right now. Seems as if the higher profile developers either dont want to say anything or claim they are not
working on the Note 4.
However! - Dont expect any dev to pop in with with "HIYA GUYS!, We are currently doing this, this and this and will have root soon! toodle doo!"
Root comes when it comes. we are confident it WILL come, but we dont know when,
Lets start hoping for Santa Claus.
To me the silence is not good. Every phone I've owned that's had root has had a dev at least mention they are looking into it or working on it. Even if vague there is usually something ....
What I'm wondering is why we aren't seeing progress. I have a few theories, such as is it because this is only two carriers who locked out a phone that isn't selling? Is it because everyone's waiting for L to drop which is supposed to have a magic root bypass? Is it because the big guns are waiting for a decent bounty?
Personally, the lack of actual dev discussion is troublesome. As if no one is even concerned at all.
For users, root is the ability to fix problems, is it possible that this phone just doesn't have the problems that would create a desperate need for root?

I feel we are going to have to live without root. I have come to accept it, and actually don't think I will root it when/if it does happen.
This phone has developed nicely into a stable, functional platform for all I need it to do. With Android Lollipop I think that will be extended even further.

Android is about freedom. It's about being able to do what you want with the device you paid for.
Imagine if car dealers had the ability to lock out certain features in each automobile they sold.
I'm tired of companies like AT&T and Verizon trying to tell me what I can or can't do with something that I bought and paid for with my own hard-earned cash.
For years we were able to find ways around their restrictions and were able to keep our devices up to date and on the bleeding edge of innovation. But now for no good reason the very companies that rely on my continued patronage are locking down products that I own and it's getting harder to stay ahead of them.
For the majority of Android users, these are acceptable terms for being able to purchase the device with small payments over time. But even once the phone is paid for AT&T refuses to unlock the bootloaders.
I think it's time I start making my voice heard with my wallet by taking my business to companies that respect my freedom and leaving AT&T to the people who don't really care about theirs.

I agree with you, and to be honest, I don't know what I'd do when I get root. It's the fact that I can't do something right note that bothers me, in fact, I might not change anything but the fact that I can will keep me at ease and happy.
I would've switched to T-Mobile, but I just cannot bring myself to it with their bad coverage. I also find a certain thrill to breaking the rules, I find it fun to circumvent a multi million dollar companies attempt to "lock the hood of my car".
For that, I remain vigilant, I remain peaceful. But when root comes, I shall participate just because I can, just as once the government banned the sale, manufacture, distribution, and consumption of alcohol, many began drinking just because there was a ban.
I'm naturally rebellious, and I can't wait to rub it in their ignorant faces.

I partially agree...if you completely paid for the phone out right, u should have option to void your warranty and root and what ever. But if you make payments, you shouldn't have the right to do what ever you want cause you don't own it. If you finance or lease a car you don't own it. And you leaving AT&T to make your voice me heard...this is a very old argument/threat..the rooting/development community is an extreme minority and you leaving cause you can't root your phone is soooo under their radar that it's like a grain of sand on a beach. I would love to root and get rid of the garbage apps and Carrier IQ. And I'm sure it will happen down the road. But AT&T will laugh behind your back and say good bye cause you will either pay off the remainder of your contract, pay off the remainder of your phone, or they made their profit off you buying phone out right. Either way, they win.

Coming from a Nexus 5 with a flashing addiction I'm completely happy with my at&t edge even without root. I thought I'd get the shakes and freak out but I'm alright. I just want root for viper4android honestly and I wouldn't mind maybe a debloated slightly tweaked rom but I can live without both.
It looks like it the AT&T Note 4 is going to get root someone who is posting on these forms is going to have to learn how to do it. I have not seen anything about anyone even looking at getting root for this device.
After the problems the Note3 had on AT&T most devs just avoided this variant all together.

I have a "fixed" Note 7 and I understand I have to turn it in but I want to wait as long as I can. I know I seen on here a way to block OTA updates. Something about freezing system apps? I wan't to block any battery crippling updates Samsung puts out. I just want to wait to see if I can make it till S8 comes out.
It isn't fixed. Just send it back. Seriously.

I had all of those disabled at AT&T and many more (lessons learned from from the note 5) . Guess what, they pushed the update anyway in the middle of the night with no prompt that will let me cancel.
also install a firewall just in case.
its far fetched to think samy could have their system apps pass on/tunnel your personal data via other innocent apps (im definitely sure google is doing it to ensure they gather as much data from us as possible). if I'm wrong, at least a firewall saves you on wireless 4g data charges
This is the only thing we can do if we want to keep the phone, if it goes through then it will force the keepers to switch if it doesn't we'll see how long we can last without updated/support.

Yes I did. Had the note 5 remember?
It was crazy scary, especially when the phone turned blue and AT&T logo popped out without a warning.
It was doing something for nearly 10-20 minutes with a bar on the bottom of the screen (so I knew it was doing something).
it was in recovery mode and did not have the running android logo (like updates usually do).
I was worried to turn it off cause I did not want my phone to be bricked. When it turned back on I got the message that I must return the phone (and it kept of popping every time I charged it).
So, I am 100% positive that AT&T, and Samsung can do what they want.
Also, yesterday before I returned the phone my line got suspended. But my line is a corporate line so the company just decided to force me to return it.
damn, that's dodgy.
Ridiculous people are doing this, why not turn the damn thing in seriously? Its not going to be supported by samsung or 3rd party developers.
Samsung will almost certainly release something just as good hardware wise if not better in the future.
I just can't figure out why some of you are so insistent on keeping an unsupported and dangerous phone.

Whereas if I still had/have this, then I could with the note even year deal or whatever its called with Verizon. I guarantee im not the only one in this boat.

Yet another policeman. How the **** do you know if there's anything wrong with his or not. This is getting REALLY tedious.
FWIW, having wiped my Note 7 and boxed it up, I've changed my mind. I am keeping it for a month or two to see what pans out, news of S8 availability, take a look at the Pixel etc.
There's no rush to get them swapped and I not could give a pico-sh1t about the "explosion" risk. Seriously when ZERO have had any issues in the UK. None, nil, nada. Why would anyone be so concerned. Sure there may be a small risk but let's keep this in perspective, please.

And I can't figure out why people like you are so insistent on ramming your opinions down others' throats.
I will change mine in a month or two once theirs more alternative devices either available or announced. What's YOUR problem with what I do with MY phone?

No not at all, just not a complete moron who thinks he knows better than the multi billion dollar company (with people way way smarter than any of us) who would have done anything in their power to make sure that this didn't happen. You think they would have stopped production for something that's easily fixed? Come on, use your brain!
How do I know if there's anything wrong with his or not? I don't - nobody does - that's the problem... duh? No one can surely say that it will or won't blow up at any time, and you've got hundreds of these idiots going 'hmm, i know better than samsung, mines cool for now, therefore its always gonna be fine'
And thereby not only putting their own selfish ass at risk, but other people who they might be around at that time, god forbid it did explode/set on fire.
It's ridiculous. This whole thing should never have happened, but people insisting on keeping something that is known to randomly (until they can reproduce it, unless they already have and aren't disclosing it) set on fire, and that is just complete stupidity, and nothing else.

Yawn. It was a no brainer for Samsung to discontinue it. They could be 100% confident they would have many more fires and other issues.
Any single user can be 99.99% confident they will not.
If you don't get that, I suggest you have a quick read up on probabilities 101.
@Chippy_boy dont waste your energy man, there will always be people who are just upset in general... they start the fire the moment they hear someone scream witch just continue to help like minded others and ignore their verbal traps, it'll eat them up inside every time they come back here... otherwise they wouldn't come back to troll about a phone they don't have
