Hi,
I have two partition 14 gb Fat32 and 2 gb Ext4 and I want that all installation goes on ext4 (without using internal strorage) so in this case what should I choose Apps2Sd Or Data2Sd?
thanks.
I wouldn't bother with data2sd unless I had a card of class 6 or higher.
I very much agree Class 6+ to get the benefit
Well you would want to choose data2sd, if you want as much to be on the sd-card as possible, however it is usually quite a lot slower than using internal, and there is no reason to leave internal completely empty.
Also you can't run everything from the sd-card. The system-partition will still be on internal as well as boot and so on.

Thank you mortenmhp,
I have sd-card of class 10, will still be a lot slower than internal?
thanks.
I use class 4 and have done from day one with droidzone's roms and it runs great.
I use a class 10 8GB card, and use Apps2sd. Dont really feel the need to use Data2sd.
Ive got alot of apps and still got some memory left so its all cool
Well it might not be too slow, but only do it, if you need the space, in which case it's a good solution.
But the more you move to the slower memory the more time will be spend accessing it.
But I'll encourage you to try it out for your self, as it's very individually(just make a nandroid backup and try different rom solutions) personally with my sd-card there is no way i'd use it for everyday use(flashed it a few times, and always got a slow and lagging system), while other people seem to have it working fine
Ok I will try,
Thank you mortenmhp...
Your question should be which do i need?
People rarely 'need' data2sd - apps2sd is 'usually' enough!

thanks for the infos
how do you know what class your sd card is?
there is a figure 2 or 4 or 6 or 10 in a circle printed on the sd card or you can install sd tools from market to benckmark it ( 2 means 2 mb/s , 4 means 4 mb/s,... aso )
i'd say go for apps2sd then if you need data go for that after

I now use data2sd with MIUI rom and a class 6 samsung sd card £16 from play.com
I would defo recommend this card, I didn't think from class4 to class6 would be that much difference I was wrong. I can now record videos without a single lag, phone is easy 10x faster and smooth, also MIUI is superb rom
Hi,
Most of the times a class 6 or 10 is much "slower" than a good
class 4 like the sandisk mobile ultra of 4Gb (The one of 8 Gb is slow !!).
The problem is that te typical test of writing/reading to/from a single file doesn't guarantee the behaviour of the card when used intensively.
When many files are involved, things change dramatically and a good memory controller is a must, and many of the class 6 /10
don't have one.

Hi all,
I've read in a few places that if you want to run apps from your SD card that you should have a class 6 SD card. Can anyone explain why this is? I've currently got the one that came with the phone, which is class 2. Just want to understand why I need it before splashing out the cash
Thanks
It's all about speed. Class 6 is faster than Class 4 is faster than Class 2. If you are happy with the performance with your Class 2 card, no need to splash out the cash.
yeah its just about speed, the higher the class the faster the r/w speed, you dont really need a class 6 these days tho, maybe in the old days of the g1/hero but not now
There's quite a bit of discussion on this and I'm honestly quite confused over this as well.
The higher classes just means faster write speeds but same read speeds. Certainly, this shouldn't affect the performance of apps that are installed on the card; unless the card is being used for swap memory.
Anyway, I've heard some users with 32GB microSD card (only available in class 2) using app2sd with no ill-effects. I've recently purchased one myself and will be swapping it out later tonight.
newbie on Android here.....may I ask....Im currently using a 16Gb mem card....If I change it to a 32Gb, what are the files that I need to copy to the new card, so that the apps/games currently installed will still run? I noticed there are so many folders inside my memory card now.....which one should I transfer to my new card? Or should I need to re-install the apps?
thanks..

are you using apps2sd? or just running a stock like rom?
9 out of 10 users on this website would not be able to tell the difference in speed by running apps on a class 4 or class 6 cards.

Before the usual flamers get to write on this topic to say high-class cards are useless, it really comes down I think to the time you have available to wait for USB transfers. On a class 2 it takes AGES. I bought a class10 16gb and it's an absolute life changer (i do have a lot of public transport so I make heavy use of my phone as a video player)

Another reason to have a class 4 or faster card in the phone is to have reliable 720p 25fps video recording. On my Class 2 with a2sd+ recording stutters.
thanks for the responses. from what i read previously, it talked about class 6 cards being less likely to be unmounted and causing problems to running applications. does this mean anything to anyone?!

This is the reason when I eventually get the money I'll be getting a 16GB class 4 or 6 card. At the moment 720p is fairly pointless to me since I can't get smooth recordings with my SD card.
Have no issues with my 16Gb Class-2 sdcard. R/W speed enough to handle 720p recording and rockplayer playing avis perfectly.

Are you running A2SD or a2sd+ on your phone? If not, that may be the reason.
The more apps and widgets and stuff is moved to the sd, the more r/w-access happens to the card, which has serious impact on video recording. I really wish the internal memory of the Desire wasn't so small. What the heck did HTC think by putting only 560 MByte internal storage into their android flagship? The SGS has 5 GiBytes!

Incorrect!
The class of the card doesn't tell you the speed of a card - it tells you the *minimum* sustained write speed on a card which is completely unfragmented
A good quality class 2 card can and often will be faster than a poor quality class 6 card.
The two Sandisk Class 2 card I use both write at around 7.5mb/s, which is faster than the class 6 minimums.
Regards,
Dave

That's interesting info! Would explain why I have far fewer problems than most people report with 720p recording onto my class2 card.
So the real answer is: Benchmark your write speed before making any big purchasing decisions on SD cards.

Hello, I bought some day ago a Team 16GB class 10 Micro SD card, but my Defy freeze, expecially when I browse it with quickpic.
I see some thread about class 10 cards and someone found that a partial fix is format with 32k or 64k as file allocation unit size, and maybe another fix is set higher voltage with setsvel.
I've tried the format fix, but I gain only speed, now I'll try the second to gain the needed stability.
I read also that it's an Android kernel related issue, so we still need an official fix.
Someone know some other method?
D_L
Edit: Also the voltage tweak have failed... It's frustrating...
There maybe something related to the manufacturer. For example in my country the cheepest MicroSDHC Cards are made by Adata and Serioux (there maybe other chinesse brands but these are present at known big IT stores).
So people bought them, especially Adata ( which should be better than Serioux).
Class 6/10... and they ended up not working.
So my advice is to try with a Knigston/Kingmax/Transcend/ Sandisk( not that cheap) same 16gb and same class, see if you see a difference.
And i think Class 6 is enough... if let's say Class 10 from the manufacturers above it too expensive.
Maybe it helps.
Transcend?? um.. i don't think so, it's just the same.
perviously i had Transced 8 GB class 6,
using my old galaxy android, it's so fine and speed is good.
but after went to Defy, it was horrible.
often to cause hangs!
have to unmount / remount, which often not succeed, and have to pull out battery.
and it's especially happen when taking picture with camera or downloading + listening to mp3.
many good moments missed, can't take picture, because have to pull out the battery,
and that's embarassing, in front of my friend.
they think i have a smartphone but often hangs,
and now i know it is just because highclass sdcard.
i am using class 2 sdcard now, never get hangs.
end of problem.
I had the same problem.
I bought a 16GB class 10 SDHC ab. a month ago and when I'd been using my Defy always been freezed when I opened the Gallery or any else card related application.
I deleted the partition on the card and created a new one without LBA mode and the problem had been solved temporary. After a week it was start to make freezes again.
Actually I'm using a 16GB class 2 one (I bought it for 15 pounds as used). There's no problems any more, and it works as the same speed as the class 10 one (by the SD Tools).
I gave up and went back to a class 6 8GB Samsung, i did start a thread on the official Motorola forum if you want to go let them know about the problems, it might get them to issue a fix if more people start to complain about it. https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/53050?tstart=30
i tot only me..

Hi Deonix.
My SD is a SanDisk 8GB class 4 and working well.
A couple days a go i try to use my other SD 16GB (class 10) and had issues, so i back to the 8GB class 4.
Some users have 16 and 32GB class 2 and 4 and they have no problems.
Thanks... i will choose a class 4 probably Kingmax. Anyone with working Class 6 8gb? what manufacturer?
Question: i will have on my 8 gb card a bunch of apps-30-40... some games including Asphalt 6 < for example>, MotoNav, and music. Out of this i think i will still have 2-3 Gb free . I don't need to transfer data from Card to PC frequently (fast i mean) maybe when it happens i will use the phone as a mass storage.
The question is: Do i need a class 6? I only need to work properly while in the phone and have a decent speed as a Mass storage from time to time.
definetely is not cm7 problem,
i thought it was.. and many people thought it too.
maybe it's froyo kernel seems little bit buggy with hiclass sdcard.
and cm7 using froyo kernel though.
using class 2 sdcard is perfect.
the speed is just the same though.
have been checked with some bencharking tools.
Both me and the missus are using class 6 samsung cards this one to be precise http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Micro-Speed-memory-Class/dp/B002WGIV10/ref=pd_rhf_shvl_44 and it works greatSD tools shows a write speed of around 10MB/s and a read speed of around 21MB/s
actually, i'll buy SD Card Team 16 Gig class 10..

i don't know what's going on but it's happening and annoying,

Thats what we are all saying, class 10 cards seem nothing but a problem regardless of size. This is why i went back to the class 6 samsung and posted a link to it cos i know it works.
Just bought a 8 gb Kingston class 4. Will report speed and any other issues as soon as i install CM7 with it.
Hope it works well. It's an Android Kernel issue from Froyo on the Class 6/10 crashes as i can understand.. nobody's fault ( here on XDA i mean). Still some work.
Also i remain strong on my position.
Choose your manufacturer wisely even if it costs 10-20$/i dunno how much more.
I use kingmax 16gb class10 allways hang,
so bad,
use class 4 or 2 batter

i nearly bought a 16GB Lexmark class 6 card today but i dare not in case it didnt work, this is a crap situation.
Same here - Froyo 2.2.2 and Transend 16GB Class10 - freezes at random basis and random applications. No issues with 8GB Class 4.
I have similar problem, how do I know the class of the card? It is I believe a Kingston, I've had it for ages.
Also if it is relevant to someone, I have a Defy from CEE distribution, with Froyo.

You can check if the class is printed on the card. Usually it is a number inside a letter "C" (like a full circle).
You can see the images here:

I have been trying some roms over the last few days and experience quite a big difference in speed. Some roms lag quite a bit, especially when opening sense apps.
My question is, does this depend on the speed of the SD card? I have a class 2 now (ordered a class 10 though). Are sense apps run from the SD card or the NAND?
Yes, it depends on the speed of the SD card, as in case of custom ROMs, all the apps are usually stored on the external partition. Plus at least a class 6 card is suggested in order to avoid the lags.

Class 10 works ok as long as they are a respectable brand. Also you may want to consider installing SD Booster from market to increase deafult cache size to 1024kb or 2048kb

Performance problems, the cards not doing there proper write and read speed. Let us know how you get on with new card please
Have tried the new card. It's a Transcend 16GB Class 10. Getting about 18Mb/s sequential reads and writes in windows.
Have benched it in stock froyo on my desire with SD Tools: 14,5 MB/s write and about 8 MB/s read. Strange that the read speeds are lower. Then again, it seems that there are no reliable SD speed benchmarks on Android..
Hello,
I tried to use app2sd and move the cache, dalvick cache and all application data to the microSD class 2 but my phone got very slow response and I had to wait about 8 seconds for each application to open after I click it's icon.
I want to know if I bought microSD class 10 and then try to use app2sd will I still experience the slow response or will it be fast enough so that I don't find a difference between the internal memory and the class 10 microSD?
differences between class 2 and class 10 is huge, but for app2sd class 4 or 6 is highly enough,
i use class kingston class 10 + cm7r2 hboot tried many roms and no problem at all
so if you buy a class 6 or class 10 you wil be satisfied very well
sibere said:
Card class indicates minimum sequential write speed achievable on the card.
It's good for writing big files like movie files.
But when it comes to writing small random files, it can be the opposite. Many people reported having bad random write speeds with C10 cards whereas others reported better speeds with lower class cards.
It's a matter of sd controler quality and size of erase block size. Bigger and faster SD cards have bigger erase block sizes (up to 256Ko). It means that those cards need to write 256Ko of data even for writing a single byte on the card.
That's why C10 are not the best choice when it comes to DATA2SD or any kind of similar solution to short data storage on the Desire.

about 8 seconds for each application to open? u have some serious problems...that is not normal....wipe all partitions form recovery, re-format/re-partition the sd card and install the rom again..even with a class 2 every app should open instantanly, not in some seconds..
in addition avoid the stock "move to sd", leave all the apps in the internal memory/sd-ext, but don't use move to sd, as it sometimes that get the phone slow..better only use app2sd

also the speed depend on the kernel i guess, as i said with my class 10 no problem on any rom, just suprb speed, buy class 6 then instead of class 10 and do some reasearch your move
I have no issues with stock class 2 card, so something has to be badly broken with his device. I am merely pointing that class 10 obviously is not obligatory gadget for dalvik cache to work properly - if we assume it is responsible for poor performance.
I would strongly advise against buying a class 10 for the Desire. I bought one thinking it would be faster as did a friend of mine. My friends class 10 refuses to work point blank with either his or my phone, my class 10 works but it's very unreliable and I'm seeing some very low Quadrant scores. When I say unreliable, I have a 1Gb ext partition on it that seems not to work properly and I also had a Nandroid backup restore fail as the MD5 checksum failed. I'm getting a class 4 16Gb off Ebay now.
how can i check what class is my sd card ?
without opening the phone if it is possible
and what is the preffered class for data2ext ?
I also got a Class 10 and I am running InsertCoin 1.1.1 with CM7r2, no issues at all regarding speed. Whereas the speedtest shows that I do not reach full speed for the class 10 (just around 6MB/s write speed, with version 1.1.0 I had 8-9MB/s).

may be your memory card carry viruses so try to format it and then format your cell phone also(reset configuration with erase memory card)....may be this could solve your problem...
I see that you guys all use a class 10 card. Is there really a big difference compared to lower class cards?
My phone worked smooth enough with the stock 8GB class 2 card, and my current Transcend class 4 16GB doesn't harm the phone's performance.
class 4 is enough, on phone you will not see any DIFRENCE.
When you connect your phone to PC over USB and conect it to mass storage, you will see then POWER OF CLASS 10. faster uploading to PC, and faster dowloading from PC.
On phone class 10 and class 4 are the SAME.
Well, I noticed a difference and prefer the class 10 all the way.

Hi hi Ok I have a problem and hoping someone can help...
I purchaced a kingston 32GB class 10 memory card and plagued with issues since having it.
My setup is...
Arc LT15
.42 Firmware
Advanced stock kernel
32GB class 10 memory card
Now the problem is images and videos and apps.
Apps...
They keep ramdom uninstalling if they are stored on the memory card
Videos/pictures
Any I have taken since installing the card become corrupted. Even screenshots.
IE I took a screenshot and it displayed on the phone, I went to gallary and viewed it fine.
Came to home screen and back to gallery still fine.
Left some time went to gallary and corrupt.
Cannot be viewed even by PC
This also happened to videos.
I had this problem so installed a totally fresh se rom updated via SEUS (I think)
Cleared dalvik cache and user cache etc manually installed the apps from the card etc etc used no backups apart from contacts backup
Everything was totally clean.
Even my language from swiftkey keyboard app keeps deleting randomly :/
Still getting the issue :/ Is there anything i'm missing?
Thanks,
Jinx13
Hey guys... read cearfully!
The class 10 approx parameters are... Read- 22 mb/s write 10 mb/s
The class 4 are Read 10 mb/s Write 4 mb/s...
So why your phones working bad with class 10?
Because those are linear read-write speeds...and you are using it only while USB connection by moovie transfer or watching... What is the rest card usage?
It is random read-write or seqental read-write used by yor apk's or fo example thumbs of stock gallery.
These speeds are for class 10 - 0.08 mb/s
class 4 - 0.8 mb/s
See the difference now? So class 10 is good for DSLR cameras or mediaplayers etc. Class 4 perfect for phone. Mine 32gb class 4 just flying!!!!!
So your saying 32GB class 10 is not supported fully by the ARC?
Jinx13
I don't get you.
SD speedtest apps give me ~10MB/s write and 20+MB/s read, so it's supported.
Also it feels faster than a class 4 (class 4 vs class 10 was tested in my X10, but Arc is even faster)
Sent from my LT15i using XDA Premium App
It is linear speeds...like you are reading or writing moovie or some one solid big file...
But the system uses random read of small files... And there class 10 looses. On class 4 compared to class 10 in gallery 1000+ photo thumbnails appears in seconds.
Try crystall disc mark software to test your card on PC and you will see. Test config is 5 tests at 100mb...pay attention at 4K and 4Kq32 speeds. At class 10 they are 0.04-0.08...
Ah
Anyways, I'm happy with my 32GB class 10

Ofcourse you are! I just wanted to make it clear for those who says that it is lagy or like that...
But it isn't laggy with the class 10 when you have a good sd card.
The cheap Kingston 16GB class 10 from eBay lagged often in Astro, but no problems with my Patriot 32GB class 10 sd card

So can anyone explain why I might have problems?
From my previous post I just rebooted my phone and lost my SD apps AGAIN!!
Yep! Patriot is one of that card of class 10 that gives you a great performance in any type of R/W. There is a post here, on XDA...there said that patriot is the best card, so my answer is not for you man)))))
About sd apps loss you shold check your app wich provides managment of apps to sd card - links2sd or what it is... the promlem is not in the card.
Or check the sd if it corrupts files.

It is not that program as that program just points to the settings page to move the file.
I have decided to put my 8GB class 2 back in and that is working without problems.

After testing with my old card since yesterday I will try send my card back.
Thanks for replies,

I bought a Kingston 16GB class 10 - Full of problems (returned)
Then a Kingston 32GB class 4 - better results but not that speedy
Now I found for 46euros here in Greece a Samsung 32GB class 10 so I said I have to try this.. and voila! The card is perfect, no lags! The phone is super speedy now!
So I guess it have to do with the cards not the brand.. if you re lucky you will end up with a good card.
