GPRS modem signal - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Has anyone tried reading the XDA GPRS modem signal
strength via the TAPI function: lineGetLineDevStatus().
I've tried and I always seem to get 48495. It never seems
to change, even when the modem loses signal. Is this
supported?

When you see the "E" or the "G" (by itself), those mean you're connected through the older/slower GPRS/EDGE. The "H" by itself means you're connected to a 3G tower that has been prepped for the new higher-speed 3G that t-mo is rolling out (although the backend elements to get the full speed are only just now starting to be turned up as well).
I don't know what APN to tell you to use...are you with Tmobile US?

Signal Issues, please help

Hi guys, just flashed a new rom (jm7).. everything went ok.. but when I rebooted I notice that I get just about no signal in areas where I used to before get full bars.
Tried going back to other rom's but no luck, I still continuously get a poor signal. One thing I did notice is that right after boot the signal slowly goes to 5 bars (even in areas with bad signal) and then slowly goes down to 0-1. This same instance happens when I place a phone call as well.
Any ideas? I can barely use data when this is going on as well.
Try going into mobile networks and network operators and see if there's a second option for your network. You might be connected to a weather signal. It's under wireless settings. Happened to me.

Are you sure that your network operator make some not some work on cell bt in your area? One time i have too like you bad and wrong signal, and make all with my galaxy, reboot, recovery, signal refresh app, APN point new entered, but still problem. After all, I call my operater and they say me:" Sorry , we make same work on cell base station in area your city !!! Sorry for bad signal, we busy to make repair speedy !!! "
Best regards
Sorry double post
Thanks for the responses... no go sadly.. tried switching the 3 different "bell" networks and only 1 allowed me to connect. As for signal str in area, a friend who has the same network has 4 full, while i only get 1
I've tried reformatting/reflashing/reseting and nothing has worked.. what am i missing?

Quick 3g question

Can someone please explain how the 3g symbol/arrows/bars work?
I am just wanting to know how they relate with each other.
For example sometimes I have full bars and the 3g arrows are white, not transmitting data. And other times I have low signal bars and thr arrows are moving faster.
So if I have full bars should the arrows be moving all the time or is it just the nature of the beast and it transfers data when it wants to.
Thanks

3G is actually seperate from the phone radio. The bars represent phone signal strength. If 3G (data) is down you can still make phone calls. 3G is like your internet and data. The arrows moving are your accounts and emal syncing.

arrows show send and receive of data packets, they will blink, etc. but that has no relevance on the speed of your 3G connection or the strength.
3G is NOT separate from your phone radio, it is the same radio, which is why you can't have a data connection and voice connection at the same time.

I have googled things on the web while on the phone. Telephone bars and 3G strength are independent otherwise where does 2G and 1X come from? People out of 3G areas still have phone service.

You have not "googled" anything while you were on the phone, at least not on 3G. The outdated version of CDMA Sprint uses doesn't allow for voice and data to be active at the same time.
Yea the 3G arrows are the internet up/down , the signal bars are separate thats your cell signal. Like when you turn off 3G you can still call and text , 3G is for the internet when youre not on wifi , the arrows light up when your phone is sending or receiving data

I stand corrected...it was on 4G. Sorry. 3G and phone share the CDMA Radio but they are still 2 different animals independent from each other and from indicators.

So is there any way to make the data send and recieve faster? Or is it just luck of the draw.

There were slight differences in 3G transfers with the different modems when I tested them on my Airave. EC05 was fastest with EG22 slightly behind. It varies greatly out in the real world on different towers.

[Q] Internet Connection Problem (3G)

Firstly, I'm using this phone with different sim card.
My problem is, when I got low signal (i.e 2 of 4) I can not use my Internet connection properly. It is not slow. When I try to enter a website, it is not loaded for a while, after a while it loads a bit. Wait and go. Wait and go. It is so boring.
I try to understand what the problem is and found out when I got low signal my mobile network type changes all the time. Umts, HSPA, HSPDA, HSPAS. I think the phone can not get the proper signal and changes it connection type. Can I prevent this cylce? How can I get proper connection.
I tried a lot of radios and Roms. Nothing changed.
Thank you.

[CM10] loosing data connection until reboot

Hi,
Usually i have wifi enabled permanently, as i have coverage at home, university and t-mobile hotspots. But my nexus sometimes does not get a working data connection if i disable wifi or come back from flight mode. Icon shows reception and 3G/H/H+ but stays grey. I can't access any internet services like mail,http...
If i reboot the device, everything is fine.
Any ideas ?
Latest (-3days behind max) CM10 with stock kernel, XXLF1 baseband, tmobile germany
P.s.: tried to search with google, found nothing. Currently the nexus is my only internet-capable device, so i am sorry if repost...

Try toggling airplane mode?
Beamed from my Grouper.
Same issue here. Get random signal losses and afterwards no data until reboot. I've experienced this with other Roms as well. Toggling the airplane mode sometimes help for data recovering.
Try setting your minimum CPU above 500 Mhz...
How can that change the signal issues?
Maybe toggling wifi helps (sometimes)

I have exactly the same problem on galaxy s. The status bar shows mobile network connection, but the symbol stays grey, and connection is not there. Reboot is the only safe way to solve that. Sometimes toggling airplane mode helps, last time toggling wifi helped.
Changing APN seems to be helpful. Someone that looks good with the current provider.
almost same issue for me...
but there is some weird difference...
I have a GSM Galaxy Nexus latest radio, consistent RIL and latest CM10.
I lost data suddenly while browsing.
I can see blue signal with 3G, start browse and it change to H/H+. No problem until now but, when data returns to 3G, all further requests stay "pending" for a while (phone call is not working in this state!!!!). after a minute.... CRASH, all signal lost. Something like a reset.
even toggling data does not work... I simply have to wait that the phone decides to work again.
I'm from Italy, carrier is Vodafone. Someone with some hint?
thanks!

Because on earlier builds of some AOSP ROMs, the radio had a tendency to go to sleep and not wake up when the frequency dropped too low. The common fix at the time was to use a higher number for the minimum frequency...
Read you must...
I was looking up the answers to this same problem. When I'm staying still my internet is fine but when I'm driving down the road I lose signal. I did a google search for "cm10 losing data connection". This is a "normal problem" it is caused from changing between 3g and LTE 4g. I'm still looking up solutions to this problem.
