mac address - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Does anyone know how I can find out the mac address of my xda IIs ? I have a dreytek wireless router at home which uses a mac based access control list. I've tried the addresses that appear in wireless LAN manager ( BSSID and MAC ) but no joy. The only way I can connect is to switch off the access list feature completely
jeff

Hi Jeff,
Switch off the Access control, and let the XDA IIs join the wireless network. Then go into Diagnostic Tools --> View DHCP assigned addresses, and you will get a list of MAC addresses, IP addresses and hosts on the network. Match your phone's name to the MAC address.
Then you can turn access control on again and input the phone's mac address into the "allowed" list.

Thanks for the reply. I've kind of done that as you can see from the DHCP table below
DHCP server: Running
Index IP Address MAC Address Leased Time HOST ID
1 192.168.1.1 00-50-7F-23-97-CC ROUTER IP
2 192.168.1.10 00-00-00-00-00-00 BAD IP
3 192.168.1.11 00-0D-61-4E-A7-F7 0:00:04.600 hubbo
4 192.168.1.12 00-09-2D-0E-49-61 9:24:34.170
(not sure about that BADIP line ! )
I would say my MAC is 00-09-2D-0E-49-61 but it's still not working.... odd.

Is there no way that you can tell the MAC address from the phone without connecting to a network.

Here is a freeware that will allow you to find your MAC with no connection. I used it on my PDA2K.
http://www.freewareppc.com/communication/vxipconfig.shtml
Install on your device. Just turn the wifi on and run the program and it will give you the MAC and additional device info. Don't have the PPC connected to the USB or it will identify that device.

Sorted thanks, whilst in PC World I scanned for a Wireless network, and found three, hehe! Once connected used that utility to get my MAC.
Many thanks!

XDAIIi and Wifi

I just bought one of these and can't get it connected. I have a netgear wg602 access point, and have configured the IP address manually (I know IP, dns and gateway are right)
I now have it saying it's connected, with right IP address. My DNS and gateway are set up for the wireless adapter in network adapters. The signal is average. The XDA says wifi is connected. The access point even says it's authenticated and associated - same as my other stations.
Only problem is, internet explorer doesn't find any web pages - says "The page you are looking for cannot be found" (works fine through GPRS)
Also, terminal services times out trying to connect to an internal IP address (to eliminate DNS as a problem)
So, anyone know how I troubleshoot network problems - it looks like a TCP/IP issue? Can't find ping or arp etc. I've also tried an IP address that I know works on the network.
thanks for any help
Dave
Can you ping the XDA from any other station on the network ?
Is your network 802.11b or 802.11g or both ?
both
No, I can't ping the xda from anywhere else. The access point is both. I have two other stations - one on g and one on b.
thanks
Dave
Must be something in the config on the XDA.
If you look at the settings for the WiFi network card on the XDA what does it say it connects to..."Work" or "The Internet".
Try changing that and see if that helps.

does NE1 have the answer to wifi not connecting to the net

im trying to get an internet connection through my wifi connection. i have done search's and lots of people seem to be asking the same question but nobody has the answer.
at the moment i can access my c: using an application called Resco explorer. but i can not connect to the internet. im not sure what setting i should have on the wifi manger and on my pc. im also using AOL as my isp.
PLS PLS help
Edit:
also i can not connect to activesync (version 3.8.0) via wifi. maybe if i was able to connect to this the internet would work as it does when its docked??????
looks like a no then
I got mine working but setting my wireless network adapter to connect to "Work".
Under Settings>Connections>Tasks>Manage existing connections>Proxy Settings> check the "This network connects to the internet" box
then
Under Settings>Connections>Advanced>Select Networks> "Programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using:" to "My Work Network" (and the same with one for private network)
Also in your active sync settings, make sure your connection settings allow network (Ethernet) and RAS connections.
From previous research around this, i'm pretty sure you can only use the internet pass through under "WORK" settings only.
*thought i'd better register and contribute as i've gained a fair bit from this forum.
no good anyother ideas. i have searched through hundreds of threads and still no go
help pls
Make sure you have "Enable Netbios over TCP/IP" checked in your TCP/IP Advanced settings.
i have done this on both my wifi network and my isp network.
still not working
Have you checked if you're getting an IP address from your Wireless Router's DHCP server? Also DNS settings and Gateway address should be there.
You can check this easily by using vxUtil (free )
these are my settings:
tiacxwln1 - tiacxwln compatible wireless
Ip address 192.168.0.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.1
primary DNS 192.168.0.1
secondary dns
primary wins
seconfdary wins
DHCPs server 192.168.0.1
under serial usb
IP address 192.168.55.101
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.55.100
primary DNS 127.0.0.1
Getting this error when I tried to allow my broadband connection to share with my wifi connection. If I unplug the wifi connection and try and share with another network I don’t get any errors.
Internet connection sharing (ics) cannot be enabled due to IP address conflict on the network. ICS requires the host be configured to use 192.168.0.1 please ensure that no other client on the network is configured to use 192.168.0.1
hmmm ... ever had the same problem. all devices are able to connect to the same router except mine sx66.
then i change the router's channel to '1' .. tada .. now everyone is connected. it might sounds silly, but it worked for me.
try changing your ap wireless channel.

i found the problem with activesync 3.8 and 4.0 somehow, so i reverted back to 3.7, now wifi can sync.
afaik, connecting to internet has nothing to do with activesync. its a direct connection to wifi router. use work location and check the proxy settings if u hv any? (at home i use connect to internet without proxy, at work i use connect to internet with proxy).
Also, for Activsync with wifi, make sure that the WINS server address is that of yr PC u want to sync with.

How can I get the Wireless Card MAC address ?

Thanks
Are we talking about an SD wifi card? Look on the back, that's where my MAC address is printed.

Not the best nor easiest way, but I watched the log files on my LinkSys to see what devices were connected. Mine would not conenct as I had MAC filtering enabled, however I was able to see the devices MAC.
I am sure there are apps out there that will do this, I believe IP Dashboard will do this as well:

It will show you the MAC address in the 'Wireless LAN Manager" (it does on my XDA2s)
The BSSID is the MAC address of the AP (access point) that you are connected to. (if you are connected)
Below that you will see the unit's (client) MAC address

Problem is: WLAN manager doesn't show the MACaddress if you just turn it on, only when it's associated with an Access Point. (i.e. when it has a wireless link)
Just like the previous poster, I've had to disable any security on the AP to get it connected in the first place. Once its online you can pick it up from DHCP logs or whatever and re-establish your WEP/WPA/PEAP and macfiltering.

Hmm are you sure? I've tested it. I'm not near my AP, and have no connect with one, but I do see my MAC address!
Try running vxIPConfig from Cambridge Software. It'll display the MAC address for all installed network cards.
Hi,
On a related note, is it possible to see what networks/wep keys are setup anywhere?
If for example you wanted to remove one or one changed, I have never seen anywhere which lists them.
Thanks
Ian

On my 9090 I also have to be connected to an Access Point to ba able to see my Mac Adress.
Once connected go to Wireless manager, below click on the Configure Wireless Netwerks icon, then click on the network in the top window under Add New, this opens the network with name and connects to: At the bottom 3 Tabs, middle is Network Key, there is the WEP key, Disabled on my work network and Enabled with my Key on my home network. hope that helps abit.

VPN and Remote Desktop

Hi Guys,
either I dont know how to search or there is no info on VPN on the forum(I probably dont know how to search) In any case. I need assistance. How do I setup a VPN on my TyTn running WM6 and also how do I get remote desktop client? I am sure this was around previously. Did MS remove it from WM6? Or was it HTC? It this is the case.. how can one get it back?
thanks!
here's remote desktop. How do you use it? I don't know how to set it up.
thanks!!!!
now for VPN....
cheers!
The remote desktop client is available in several places in this forum for download.
To set up a VPN:
add a new VPN server connection
enter the name / ip of the server you want to connect to
select the vpn type -- ipsec or pptp
next
enter your user name and password
finish
The only way I have found to connect to the von is to goto
Start-Settings-connections-connections-edit my vpn servers- -- tap & hold MY VPN
select connect
you must be using a plan that assigns you a public IP (not WAP)
hope this helps

Thanks cmccarter, done it but how will I know I am connected.. It does not say connected anywhere that I can see and when clicking/hold on the item it gives me the option to connect again, not disconnect as I would have thought The other thing is terminal server does not connect. It connects fine on USB. VPN/Remote desktop connects fine using normal internet on pc from outside the network. So I believe the network settings are fine.. How would I know though if I am on WAP or get an IP. Also ow would I know if the VPN is connected?
thanks

i also have struggled getting rdp to work over a vpn, in particular over 3+/hsdpa
the only i found in wm5 was to add the vpn connect to the exceptions list of the connection manager, so that it didnt disconnect the vpn whem connecting the rdp.
this occurs more when u use an ip address to connect to a work intranet.
suppose if u use the dns name of the machine and not the ip address then it isnt that much of an issue. in wm5 when u put the ip address in it assumes a an internet rather than intranet connection so it disconnects the vpn to look for the ip over the internet
putting the ip into exceptions forced wm5 to not disconnect it when rdp was looking for it.
i cudnt get it to work this way in wm6 so i am also looking for an answer on this.
rdp to my servers when they have crashed and i am on the road wud b wonderful....
Hi,
I've a similar problem.
I use a VPN-1 SecuRemote that normally connect my PC directly to the company network.
Well, using the share modem tool, I'm not able to reach the gateway.
the share modem system give me a private IP that establish a connection between PC and TYTN.
This connection use the Tytn like a gateway to navigate in internet.
Someone know to solve this issue?
Tanks a lot
if i select start the vpn connection, nothing happens - and i can`t ping the IP`s in the VPN. so i think the vpn ist not open - OR the routing entrie is missing....
is there some shiny "pptp - standalone" client?
greets, Nik
for some reason i dont think the vpn option works over 3g/hsdpa, atleast not on my device using t-mob web and walk.
if i connect the vpn when using wifi it connects and everything is fine, if i try and connect when i'm already running a 3g connection it doesn't work.
i dont think the radio stack is capible of handling a 3g connection and a vpn connection. we might need to go down the route of getting a seprate wm vpn client.

[Q] Connectify - With HTC Desire

Guys,
I recently came across connectify app and installed it on my Windows 7 laptop. It installed just fine and created a WIFI Hotspot for me.
But when I try to connect to that WIFI Hotspot from my desire , it keeps saying "Obtaining IP Address from Connectify" and never connects. I am not sure what's wrong , something in my Desire or something with Connectify or if I need to fix some settings in my Win7 laptop ?
Can someone please advise.
FYI - Windows 7 is connected to a my workplace LAN and requires a proxy authentication if i need to access internet.
Thanks in advance;
Even I'm facing problems connecting to Connectify.
I suspect that IP address is not getting assigned since there are no DHCP servers running on the PC. That might be the first problem
Second thing is, even if I run a dhcp server (I'm yet to do it...) in my PC, I think the wifi and ethernet might be on the same or different network based on how the dhcp server is configured. But setting Default Gateway and DNS settings are whats getting me confused.
If I can find some Idle time, i can experiment and try it.. If anyone is already using it successfully, they can post on how to do it here.. will be very helpful.
My laptop is connected to my ADSL modem via ethernet cable, and I'm connecting the mobile to my Laptop's wifi (Via connectify which makes the WLAN in laptop appear as an Access point). This connectify should share the wired internet to my mobile via Wlan but i'm have not yet found how to set it up..
old post i know, but i wanted to chime in and let these people know that the latest beta fixes these problems. at least it now works for me on my eris

I have the same problem with Connectify 2.0.1.15550, what version are you using?
I found the 2.1 beta, all working now. Thanks.
I had the same problem with connectify and I sincerely suggest you to try Virtual Router. It's crappy but it works.
You can get it here:
http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/releases/view/36035
Good luck!
I had the same issues and can confirm that virtual router works straight away!
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Turn off Windows Firewall...
... at least untill you get the IP.
About proxy, that's a whole other story. Still messing with Transproxy, but no success yet.
Hey. I tried Connectify put I got the 'obtaining IP address' problem.
So I tried Virtual Router ... but again I have having problems 'obtaining IP'.
I am trying to connect my Samsung Galaxy S to my Windows 7 Laptop.
Help me...
Thanks guys
bUmP
Connectify`s main usage is to share the wired broadband to the mobile using wifi in laptop as a hotspot. It should be fairly straightforward but needs to set some settings correctly. It would be great if someone for whom its working to post it setp-by-step. Will be really helpful.
And strangely there are no guides on the net on how to set it up exactly in wondows 7 and connectify homepage does not give any useful info.
I keep getting "obtaining IP address from..." on my Android device...
why is this?
Virtual Router or connectify don't work..
is it because android does not support Ad-Hoc?
I have running Froyo 2.2 though...
Any help?
Thanks
Hi,
I don't know if it's really the same problem here but I also had some issues with Windows 7, connectify and the devices I tried to connect.
After following the steps to create a wifi hotspot, I had to deactivate the windows firewall on the private networks (I specified to windows that the connectify network was a private network).
There should be a way to setup the correct permission in the firewall's permission table to make it work properly... Unfortunatly I haven't find it yet.
So it's a quick fix. Hope it will help you.
This will fix the Galaxy S's inability to connect / locate ad-hoc networks

You need this file for the Desire - search around XDA. You might have to download version 6 of the file.
When you download it, flash it from recovery.
Meanwhile, create an adhoc network on your laptop or wherever, configure the IP address (192.168.137.1 is the IP of the laptop - Windows, for some reason or another, doesn't like sharing on other IPs, though I haven't tried lately) and set your encryption to WEP.
Share your connection from LAN, and you're good to go. On the phone, the adhoc networks will be represented with an asterisk, like
(*)network
none of them work on win 7 64 bit - on win 7 32 bit I cen get IP, on 64 bit cant, whan assigned static IP by below at previous posts, I can connect, but internet does not work.

i came here from google as well. i had the obtaining ip address issue with connectify on win xp and zte blade with cyanogenmod (N142). thanks to this post, i solved the obtaining ip issue, and my phone managed to connect to connectify. apparently: my phone doesn't appear in clients tab in connectify, and my phone doesn't transfer any data traffic. so from the phone it looks like connected, but from connectify no.
edit: i found out that i succesfully connect to connectify with my smartphone only the first time i try (because it worked the very first time i used connectify and the first time i tried again after a complete reset of my phone). then, if i disconnect/reconnect, i find the "obtaining IP"/"no data traffic" issues. of course, resetting my phone each time i want to use my laptop's wifi isn't very handy..
