how to undo a rom modification - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

first of all i'm sorry for this question
I'm really a beginner in modifying my extended-rom. I want to change my mda to a "xda". i've got the latest updates and some of the software discussed on this site but there is one question left:
Just in case i make a mistake while modifying my (extended)-rom: can i repair everything by simply installing the original update provided by t-mobile??
Thanks for any answers, help, suggestions,...
Andi

Simple answer: YES.
Before you start 'modifying the rom' or 'upgrade' you should make sure you have an upgrade package from the original operator for the rare ocasion you need to go back (then you can upgrade it back to something they will recognize. Imagine how T-Mobile personell will look at an MDAII that has all the O2 stuff on it).
In your case: Make sure you have the T-Mobile 1.72.190 rom upgrade at hand while you upgrade to a O2 rom

O2 XDAII ROM upgrade failed?

I have just downloaded the rom upgrade off the O2 website (ver 1.60.50) and installed. Initially it was trying to connect to the internet! Eventually I got it working, but after hard resetting the version still says 1.60.00wwe, Rom date 12/03/03, extRom ver 1.60.50 - all as before.
Does anyone know if the upgrade has actually worked but the info not been updated, or does this mean that the update hasn't worked and I must have had an error somewhere?
Any help, advise appreciated.
I thought these forums where to help each other out and provide information. It is disappointing that no one wants to help, or provide a little guidance.

Absolutely nothing changed?
I thought it's not possible? Did you see a progress bar on XDA's display during the upgrade? if so, the memory has been accessed, so your rom is the new one, there is just a mess in identification. As far as I know, extROM changes the identity (it is it's main purpose), did you use it?

Maybe I'm wrong - but it seems that you are upgrading from 1.60.50 to 1.60.50. Right? As such, everything WOULD be the same!
I did see the progress bar, and the documentation before the upgrade on the O2 website sugests the Rom to be 1.60.00wwe and the extRom to be 1.60.50
I would have expected the actual Rom to now be 1.60.50wwe.
Has anyone else managed to upgrade to the official O2 ROM that is on their site and can confirm the ROM info? Also what apps etc would confirm that it has been upgraded if the info hasn't been updated but upgrade has work?
Many thanks for help and advice.
I'm not sure, but doesn't higher number mean later+better ROM?
If yes, have a look at 1.72 by T-mobile - there should not be many differences!
Since I have only just bought it I don't want to upgrade to an unofficial ROM in case it invalidates the Warranty should anything go wrong with it. May look at using a ROM from another supplier in a few months though.
Can anyone confirm if the ROM ver should be changed?
Thanks

You need to give people time to reply mate - we don't LIVE on these forums you know.
Anyhow, to answer your posts, yes, you have worked it out, the O2 ROM update, which is described as 1.60.50, is actually just the extended ROM element.
The system ROM is still 1.60.00
This confused me, and no doubt, lots more people too, and it's a bit STUPID of O2 to describe it this way.
Thus, you have in effect flashed your XDA2 to the exact same ROM it had before hand.
Curses to O2 for the confusion. Not good of them!
Thanks, and sorry for being impatient
O2 need to sort this out as I have done a ROM upgrade that could have fried my machine if I did it wrong that was unneccessary.
Thanks again.
Well, O2 is not alone in this - the current i-mate ROM is listed as 172126. The ROM version is 1.72.00, but the Extended ROM is 1.72.126.
I think they do this for internal tracking purposes. They get the ROM from MS, but they tweak the ExtROM themselves. It is possible for them to release multiple ExtROM versions in the same ROM version, so THAT is what they specify.
Make sense? Just a stab in the dark as to the logic of the release numbers.

Mmm.. you left quite far behind. But it is not too late. I suggess you to upgrade with o2 Uk ROM like you did, but before doing this, "cook" them first, like what i did. I'm from Indonesia,. yes we are neighborhood.

3. From this guidance, You can update yours without error country ID and not losing your "auto config". the last is the easiest way to activate your GPRS. Yes, Asian Phone Provider, like mine.

In reverse order - yes, there is a chance that you will brick your phone. You should read the wiki: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Universal
If you start there, you will minimise your chances of messing up in an expensive way (if you do it right, either you won't brick your phone or you'll already know the way out).
Next thing is have a scour through this forum. There are numerous issues and numerous ROMs. Some of the issues may be important to how you want / need to use your phone.
The latest ROM is from Jwrightmcps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293902
although there is probably going to be an updated one soon. However, WM6 may not suit you (eg no video calling yet). You may prefer one of the WM5 ones - either AKU3.5 or 3.3. Again, it is just much easier if you spend some time reading the forum.

wm6 for tmob vario2 uk... which version should I use and how?

Hi guys, I am a serial lurker here for several years.. and finally decided to upgrade my vario 2 to shiny wm6. I have downloaded black 2.5 and wanted to find out it all works great and how to install....
i haven't made any other changes to my vario 2 so want to get this right first time!
I think you need to lurk (and read) a bit longer, this same question has already been asked today!
lol, I read that which sparked an interest in upgrading...
What I wanted to know was which was the "best version" to install and what was the best procedure to follow for tmob uk.. I have seen plenty that mention the usa networks but no instructions specifically for tmob..
I know that a lot of you guys have already done it, so I just wanted to pull at your experience and get a good safe method!!!
Put on the fire proof suit quickly my friend, I think it will get very hot very shortly.
Check the WIKI, look for custom rom upgrading and follow MrVanx's idiot proof guides.
Black 2.5 has a UK TMob version as well. The thread is fairly obvious.....
great thanks for the advice....
I will look for it.... would be handy to have a direct url for any other tmob users that come across this post...
I used vanx
I used vanx's update method to install the hard spl, and now my phone is stuck on the 4 colours and won't go any further......
Can anyone help?
His guide also has a what to do if things go wrong section IIRC?
Also, read all 74 pages of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722
phew I was lucky, I only needed to reset as it was stuck in bootloader. however when I try to instal hard spl it gives me a request to run enterbl.exe which when I run it, resets the device immediately into a boot loader screen (the colors) and doens't update the firmware...
Have you got all the necessary .net framework stuff installed?
Presume you are using XP not Vista.
i'm still using black 2 but will be upgrading to black 2.5 over the next few days when i have time. I'm also on t-mobile uk and although i havn't tried either the standard black2.5 or the t-mobile one, it'll be the standard version I install as i'd rather keep my phone clean from any t-mobile stuff. Thats just me though.
.net framework? I have looked all over and can't see any reference to it.. can you clarify??
edit:sorry am runnig latest 2.0 version

You need .net framework 2. If you havent got it, download from microsoft. You should read MrVanx guide
You will need to wait for one of the gurus to look in then I am afraid - I followed the guide and it all worked for me.....
T-Mobile - UK W'n'W
I've bitten the button and upgraded both my rom and radio and so far so good
Check this thread, it helped me when I was stuck on bootloader:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Unbrick
thanks for the message, however I am back in the os... I think it must be some type of software lock.... does t-mob application lock their devices?
Hi, dont know about t-mobile, but I know Orange uk lock their's. However I followed Mr Vanx's excellent guide on the hermes wiki & have flashed a few times with no problems so far. Currently running Black 2.5 (excellent), with no issues.
I use
t-mob and hermes adn black 2.5. Absolutely great.
haven't bothered with the specific t-mobile flavoured rom, but downloaded a cab file which you won't need which oads the settings for mms and other such "treats" like that.
Have used black since 1.0 and think it's great, and continues to get better.

New to Motorola Defy

Hi Guys,
Previously I have had a HTC Magic, Vario II and Vario III. Am used to easy flashing and updates lol.
I know Moto have got a locked bootloader (seen the news about possible unlocking coming) however I could not resist the Defy as T-Mobile UK gave me a fantastic deal.
T-Mobile handsets come "customised" something that is not popular with me will probably debrand it.
1st question, can I flash back to the branded firmware if it needs to go back to T-Mob?
2nd question there is alot of talk over 2.51 normally I would automatically upgrade to the latest ROM however am unsure if it is worth it?
Cheers,
The easiset thing you could do it so make a nandroid backup of your current setup and then try what ever SBF you want except for 2.51 (this due to the fact that it has a non downgrable bootloader).
I bought a german defy and I installed the 2.31 firmware which I'm happy with. Since then I have also deodexed the system files and removed some apps that I dont need.
Just read through the faq/guides sections of the development board and you will be fine.
If you're new to the Defy, this guide is indispensable.
I links to a series of other guides but it lays them out in the order you should do them and the author also adds his own little notes which are very helpful.
Personally, I flashed the 2.34 ROM as it's got less Blur crap on it.
There are also Froyo ROMs kicking around but they're basically backups from other people's phones, as opposed to proper builds released by Motorola.
