What's Your Killer App or Setup? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

What are the killer apps you use on your Blue Angel device and Your favorite programs?

Mine's on it's way.
On my XDAII I wouldn't be without Agenda Fusion and Sprite Back Up.
Codewallet Pro, All In Hold 'Em Poker, Pocket Expense Pro, Visual IT Tube, Phone Today, Spb GPRS Monitor and Resco Explorer are all there too and I recommend them.

Forgotten to mention Calligrapher. Used it for years and it's excellent.

for me, PzP stands out, also PocketBreeze, PocketInformant, PhoneDashboard and PocketMon (Except for PI the rest is my today screen plugins and I couldn't function without them)

Does PzP allow you to switch off wifi while you're in the car. In chicago if I leave wifi on it discovers a new one every 10 seconds... That would be so awesome.

Memory of WM6

Greetings to all.
I've read alot about memory and memory leak and bloatware and well...am still kind of curious...okay, maybe a little lost.
I am running Black 2.0 with Radio 1.38.00.10
I am running, in addition to the apps included:
SBSH iLauncher
SBSH Pocket Weather
Palm Messaging
WM Extrablack dialer
PTTFix
Vibra-Switch
Batti
Mortgage CALC
ClearTemp
Legolas Date and Time
I love the ROM and love the system. It runs fast 90% of the time. I do have freezes 2 times a day. 1/2 the time I let it sit for a few minutes and it sorts itself out. The other half I have to do a soft reset. I also do a planned soft reset every morning. I downloaded Black 2.0 the very night it was released and had only one instance of it not waking up in the morning.
So, here is my question...
How much memory should be there for me to be comfortable? I see 28mb upon restart and it keeps around 20-23mb with no programs running. With Live Messenger running I had 14.1mb right now.
It doesn't run slow most of the time so I don't know if its sucked dry or not. So how much memory should be there for comfort-15mb? 20mb?24mb?-or is it situational dependent, or is it something I shouldn't worry about until it starts causing slow downs?
Thanks,
Jim
Situational
It's pretty situational on how much memory you usually have. With me I have programs running in the background so I am usually around 15-20 which is pretty good for me. If you start to see your memory drop when you don't have a lot of programs running then you should be concerned. Just look for anything unusual. Also if menus start taking a long time to open then be suspicious. Carefull of the SBSH programs. I've read a lot of comments about people having memory leaks with these programs. I'm not saying you will but if you see a slow down try stopping those programs first. I hope this helps.
same goes for SPB programs like Diary and Pocket Plus

So what is a good, small foot print launch application?
Try 'cLaunch'...
cLaunch - I've only been using it for about a week and I think it's great! It's a today plugin, so I dunno how much memory it uses.... It's got tabs for different types of programs; you can configure it to the n'th degree and I've only scratched the surface.....
Download it from this link and give it a go! There's various posts on xda-devs about cLaunch vs. lots of other launchers - just search for "cLaunch" and you'll get loads of hits - it's a good idea to look into a few alternatives before you make your mind up.
HTH,
Mark.
its not cLaunch..
its windows live messenger... there are reports on MSDN forums about Windows Live Mobile not releasing allocated memory... M$ are already looking into it
I'm going to follow what others have said - I think that Batti has some issues. I uninstalled and used Battery Status and feel that it's running better...
I ran great for the first week...now it seems to be a little slower with freezes 2x a day or so, really no big deal. I came from a Treo 650 that would freeze and reset everytime the phone rang while I was doing a scheduled mail fetch.
I'll look into battery status. I like the animated battery meter on top that moves when it's charging, but not at the cost of memory. I'm thinking of ditching Pocket Weather and going with just iLauncher and see how that goes.
Odd thing also...about once a day, I'll have like 5-6 phone apps open. With iLauncher I click on the corner to see what programs are running and 5-6 phone apps will be open and I can't close any of them...only happens every 2-3 days though. It happened with both Black v1.2 and 2.0.

You need to check the setup of the X-button. Its located in >start>settings>system tab>task manager. Change it as you like then your programs will close.
i have 24mb on restart as i have some today items and startups. if i disable all of them i get 28mb on startup.
phone runs happy all day at 20mb.
if i run activesync all day via usb or push email runs to 18mb.
when i run live messenger with html emails from hotmail (not push as exchange 03) and have internet running ie using xda emails via live messenger and open IE with nothing else running after a fresh restart to 24mb at this moment exactly i have 7mb available.
i know when i finish this and close all i will recover back to about 12-15mb only.
the only way to go back to full will be to soft reset.
i find the worst memory hogs are al MS related are:
IE
HTML Emails
Windows live
Media player
these all suck big time my memory. only soft reset recovers them. most custom apps that have a built in exit system such as gs player resco apps and the like get much better memory recovery rather than using htc X or spb or other app closers.
i must say i am disappointed that ms release such memory hogg programs AND do not build in an adequate memory recovery function.

As memory leak provider I have windows live messenger (well known), Today Agenda and SPB weather (suspected also from others)
Today agenda http://tiews.info/index.php?show=software/todayagenda is a good freeware today plugin and they just fixed a memory leak
Good Changes
Good Things!
I did a hard reset and installed my apps, minus the SBSH.
I'm now running at a comfortable 21mb with all apps loaded and running in the background.
I'm using TodayAgenda, Battery Status and Weather to Go.
It's running quite well now.
Thanks for all the suggestions and info.

Just wondering why the PTTFix. I am NOT putting down Sleuth's wonderful piece of work here, nor claiming it to be a memory hog or thief. It's indeed a wonderful piece of software, and direly needed on the stock WM5 that comes with the 8525. But I found that Black 2.0 gave me the functionality to program the PTT Key "out-of-the-box". I haven't needed to reinstall it after upgrading to Black 2.0.

I wasn't aware I could map the PTT button without it, to be quite honest. I'm going to be upgrading to the Cingular Black 2.0 and I'll try it before installing the PTTfix...
I've done a few hard resets and I can get it all configured and all apps installed to my liking in less than 10 minutes and the PTTfix is part of my process for that. I'll try it though.

I have noticed the same thing on my LVSW Rom

New thoughts about P3300 : WM6 / GPS Maps 4 travelling / New soft & hardware

Hi P3300 owners,
After having my P3300 for about 7 months i'm still satisfied, it's more compact than my previous Eten G500 and is exactly the size of a phone.
I use it mainly as a phone, to take quick notes, calculator, gps. First I planned to use it as mp3 player also, but not too much at a time, to save some battery
I saw there is a P3350 allready with added 3G function, but don't need it for the moment. Glad to see this summer WM6 Crossbow will be available for our device (after it wasn't the case firstly) but our P3300 is award-winning, so it deserves the 'vista' for our pocketpc
Now i'd like to discuss some thoughts about new software / hardware :
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. ROM
I still have the orginal rom 1.12.0.0 and GSM 02.67.90
is it worth upgrading, what is the best rom at the moment + advantages ?
In past I upgraded roms for my xda2i but now i don't seem to bother
2. GPS
I work with tomtom, satisfied, but could be better.
Free TMC instead of paid tomtom plus gprs services + more maps (Greece,Turkey,Thailand) for travelling is what i want.
I tested route 66 & destinator 6 in past but still looking...
Tried to install IGO 2006 and ViaMichelin but both said 'not a valid win 32 application'. I guess it's because I work with Vista 64, but same error on pc of collegue (XP 32bit).
The new Igo8 looks great in 3D : http://www.i-go.com/en/news/index.php?aid=110
What is your favorite GPS program? Your TMC works fine over radio without issues?
4. FREE GPS PROGRAMS
I guess this won't be as nice like paid programs.
Do you know any free gps tools with maps for travelling countries like greece, turkey, thailand for example ? Tried googlemaps and some other but did't get any images.
5. UNMISSABLE SOFTWARE
What are your favorite toolz at the moment ?
For me it's :
- SPB Pocketplus & SPB Backup
- Hitchhiker (still the old 2006 beta, no updates comming
- SkypeLowCpuBeta (free calls when travelling)
In past i tried mobimate world (nice for flight hours updating), Weatherstuff, and RSS News feeds.
6. EXTRA HARDWARE / ACCESSORIES
Checked Ebay for some very cheap usefull accessoires and I found :
- A silicone case + screen protectors
- A Motorola H300 bluetooth headset with 30 hours talktime + 30 days standby due to 1 AAA battery, that's a lot without recharging
- A dual sim adaptor (have 2 simcards, one with free sms after 16hrs+weekend, the other free talktime after 16hrs+weekend talk is cheap
So if you have tips / remarks on these topics, share your thoughts!
Ciao!
Innovator
1. ROM
I have the same ROM. It s stable though so no upgrade needed (unless crossbow of course)
2. GPS
I use MioMap. I had the problem of 'not a valid win 32 application' when running the setup.exe from my pc... then, as suprising as it is, i understood that in fact i had to run the setup.exe from the PPC ! Maybe you should try that too...
3. ???
no 3
4. FREE GPS SOFTWARE
hmm nope i don't have any free one
5. UNMISSABLE SOFTWARES
- SPb Diary
-Spb Mobile Shell
-Citytime (as usefull as worldmate, but lighter and faster.
-Spb Brain Evolution (when i'm bored, it s good to train the brain
-Resco Explorer 2006 (it's a MUST. Comes with Resco Registry)
-MioMap 3.2 - GPS software, imho better than tomtom route66 or any other soft. Not sure what are the exact difference between IGo and MioMap, i just know they are almost identical and same manufacturer, but MioMap is stable on my p3300, Igo wasn't...
- PocketStars : If you like watching stars and want to have all the details of what u r looking at... it's the best. (includes gps function to give your exact realtime sky chart at your position!).
-Metro : all bus & metro of thousands of cities in your p3300 good for travellers.
- SKTools : to optimize the P3300 (free back the ram, deletes invalid notifications queues, etc...).
6. EXTRA HARDWARE / ACCESSORIES
no idea yet, just got my HTC for 2 weeks now, but that dual card sim holder u talk about interest me...
--------------------------------------------------------
5. UNMISSABLE SOFTWARE
What are your favorite toolz at the moment ?

--------------------------------------------------------
Hi, glad to hear that u are satisfied with the P3300. I would like to ask you about skype. I use also the low cpu version (which hasn't been updated for some time now). The problem is that audio is terrible, i can't hear anything useful only a low pitch sound (although sometimes and for a second or two the voice is ok). Text chatting works very well. I believe that maybe is the slow CPU of the P3300 (and there was no improvement with Overclocking)
Have you noticed similar issues while using skype for voice calls?
Thx

There is no way that TMC will ever be possible on the Artemis, for free that is. Yes, I know that some users disagree, after all, when the radio can handle RDS, why cannot it handle TMC?
According to HTC however it is just not possible and I think they should know best.
Having said that, I do think TMC is not that great. It isn't where I live anyway, with lots of delays. TMC will inform me that there is a traffic jam on the A28, as if I didn't know allready, looking at the 300+ cars in front of me.
Thanks for the heads up on Igo 8, that looks pretty cool. Wonder how well it actually functions in practice. Anyone know if it's released to the public yet?

Must have apps Productivity applications

Guys, let's start this thread
Must have apps
1. RSS- for me Freerange, its a must I've tried all of them but for my cup of tea I love this app, great customizations, internal viewing browser, its sweet !!
2. Weather - this is an easy one NRG's MiniWeather for sure no doubt, it simply the best, Kudos to NRG
3. Instant Messaging - Windows Live Messenger and JiveTalk beta, just love the natural feel of the WLM client and for the other protocols www.beejive.com is great as well, great graphics but its still in beta, I was one of their first customer with Blackberries and it does work like a charm on that platform, so I'm hoping the final Windows Mobile product is as smooth as the Blackberry.
4. Notes - the native notes app that comes on the Samsung Blackjack II, its nice and functional and it syns to Outlook 07 for those that are not on Exchange
5. Outliner - Efficasoft Outliner, its simple, small memory footprint and very reliable
6. Celetask - great Task managager
7. Todos - Oxio's Todo List 6.1, it works like a charm with a fair degree of customizations and highly reliable
8. GPS - Google Maps, Live Search, Garmin Mobile XT (gps app loaded to the miniSD, very sweet)
9. LedAlerts - it handles all the LED notification on my BJII and it also compatible with the Dash and all other smartphones, its assest to my setup
10. Browser - is there really another, in my eyes Opera Mobile 8.65 works like a charm, like it better than Opera Mini
11. Voice Notes - guys, check out the guys from WebIS, check out the app called "Note2Self", this is how it works, hit a key record your message and it will email you the voice notes via activesync to any email, so I have it sent to myself and created a folder and a rule in Exchange 2007 to receive all these notes, its a great "Getting Things Done" addin in my humble opinion, it will also let you save the notes to the memory card as well in orb or wma format, I give this app 100 stars and very cheap.
12. Backup - Spb Backup - simply 100% reliable
13. Passwords - Spb Wallet - very nice interface and customizations
14. Screen Capture by Ilium Software - small footprint and works like a charm
I hope we can share more
15. SkTools - great byte cleaner
16. SmartToolKit - Great vista lookalike taskbar at the bottom
17. Skyfire Beta - The best browser yet
18. KinomaFreePlay - Best Youtube video, I recommend you check it out. It could be downloaded from below under my signature labeled as Smartphone Programs. I recommend this to everyone...
19. PocketNester - NES Emulator Lots of Fun...
Music Player - Pocket Player
Video Player - CorePlayer with YouTube Viewer
TV & Radio - Spb Online
Calendar - Papyrus
Photo Viewer - Resco Photo Viewer
Alarm - pTravelAlarm
Backup - Spb Backup
Task Manager - acbTaskMan hold more info than Celetask
Wi-Fi Finder - WiFoFum2
Volume - SetVolume
Browser - Opera Mini & Mobile
VNC Client - MochaVNC
Notes - Vito Audio Notes
only in england does spb online (tv,radio..) count as productivity software...i gotta go there once i learn the language
hi stylez
Parlingo is also cool
Although its not an app, Screen guards or savers are great as well, so I thought I add mine
www.bestskinsever.com for me they are the best, they are coming up with BJII total body guard in two weeks, they already have a screen for the DASH which I absolutely loved

I just use reQall. Sign up for an account. Call from your mobile. They transcribe and email the results.
You can also use keywords. If you say "Buy milk" it starts a shopping list. You can add things whenever you think about it. Then when you are on your way to the store, you call tell it to send the list as an SMS.
Best of all, it's free.

Haha that program is awesome... Works like a charm...
1. RSS- Newsbreak - (Illiumsoft) It works the best for me. NO ADS. It does a good job with podcasts as well.
2. Weather - Showaco/Outerdepth or NRG's. See you need a sports ticker it's mandatory. NRG's is so clean but sacrifice is the key.
3. Instant Messaging - Palringo just owns with sending pics/voice messages only in beta too. It's light and quick. I only use AOL as my client cause I'm an old foggie that doesn't need 5 messaging programs. AIM Messenger mobile is now in final and works nice and has a great interface. Little more heavy.
4. Notes - I don't take notes have a photographic memory. Lies
5. Celetask - great Task managager (agreed) plus SKtools to clean up monthly.
6. GPS - Google Maps, Live Search,
Garmin Mobile XT (gps app loaded to the miniSD, very sweet) How do you use Garmin Mobile unless you have a Bluetooth adapter receiver?
9. Alerts - Been using DontForget forever...Thinking of trying a switch to LedAlerts if it removes the blinks unless to inform me of notifications.
10. Browser - Opera Mini for speed. For flash Skyfire, Opera mobile also in there.
11 Backup - Sprite - wouldn't change does the same as SpB
12. Passwords/ETC - Code Wallet Pro
13. Dashwire - your oh **** backup for basic necessities. Contacts, Photo's, Emails, Texts.
14. Pocket Player - best in music so clean and sexy...still can't get podcasts to work who cares.
15. Core Player - Never looked back but still hold on to TCPMP
16. Showaco Pocketsportscenter plugin - gotta have your sports updates.
Oh I forgot about the Showaco Pocketsportscenter plugin this program is amazing... its a mini espn for me lol
Garmin Mobile XT works with windows mobile devices that an internal gps or a bluetooth gps, it goes in an MiniSD card, I have mine loaded on a 4gb card, you basically select the regions you want, its very cool

Very good bit of software far better than the built in M$ Office apps!!!

Where do I start? ATT bloatware eating it alive!

Hello all!
I am just coming off of using a Tilt for 3 years, and finally it died. In my opinion, it was the best phone I ever owned. I had high expectations for this new tilt2, but alas - when it arrived, I was dismayed at all of the crapware, levels of junk, and the lack of ability to control what icons I see on the start menu (which looks like someone vomited icons all over the screen - no organization to them at all - I have to dig 3 menus deep just to find file explorer, and FORGET about the wireless manager! It's hopeless!
Why oh why have they taken away the customization that made WM great?
On my old Tilt, I simply ran the stock rom, and did the reset to avoid all the att crapware, for a plain vanilla WM5 device. I then ran Kaisertweak, and HTC Home customizer. It ran whatever apps I threw at it, and ran them well.
My only complaint would be that compared to the iphone, the apps look and feel clunkier, but as I said, they worked very well, so who cares? Even the freeware Opera browser worked well, if inferior to Safari - but not terrible.
Is there any way to make this one look and act like that? What I wouldnt give for it to run WM5, I swear...
I have owned: Casiopea e150, dell x3, dell x5, royaltech PPC w/ gps, Eten M600, Glofiish X500, ATT 8125, ATT tilt, Iphone 2g, Iphone 3g, and now this.
I am not afraid of tweaking, although I dislike 'cooked' roms - Id rather fix a clean factory release.
Of all of those, the (old) Tilt was my woobee. I might just see if I can find another one somewhere. I like the new screen, and the fact it can play xvid movies without a recode, but damn...is it worth it? I'm afraid to put any software on this thing, because I might never find it again!

Best advice I can offer sense you dont really want a cooked rom is to grab a Program like Total commander and remove the icons you dont want and rearrange it anyway you would like
How about this: can someone point me to a plain vanilla WM6.1 (if that will work) or a WM6.5 ROM and maybe a few device driver cabs?
Oh, and by the way - I hate the 70's flipdown clock. I wish I could at choose how that looks. My god...the WM developers have now painted themselves into a corner!
*grumble grumble*
Subterran-
I think you may be overreacting a bit. I don't understand, with all of your device experience, why you aren't willing to find a cooked ROM that suits your needs and just slap it on there.
I tried the stock HTC ROM from here, http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Rhodium/Shipped_Roms, and found it to be a good alternative.
There are programs to change the interface, i.e. SPB Mobile Shell, which will let you get rid of what seems to be your biggest complaint.. There are programs to do just about anything you want it to do.
Oh, I also had a Tilt1 (Tytn II) and this one is an improvement over it, though it was a very good device.

Oh, and by the way - I hate the 70's flipdown clock. I wish I could at choose how that looks. My god...the WM developers have now painted themselves into a corner!

I think that clock is all HTC's doing. I would like some different options for clocks and some of the cooked ones are good.

Get Crud Scraper, it does it for you. Great app.

All better! Thanks all!
OK - yes I must admit, I was overreacting. I jumped out and grabbed the very capable SPD mobile shell, and that took care of me being completely lost because of the worlds nuttiest start menu (!)
Here is my complete load, in case anyone is interested:
Stock 6.5 ATT ROM
Install .net 3.5 so I can use:
Crudscraper (Awesome way to clean the bloatware out, thanks!)
SPB Mobile Shell (this completely bypasses the default start menu / home - good riddance!)
1% Increment Battery Driver
K-Battery (a slick, freeware battery meter that looks great)
Memory Map Weather Radar
Vito Audionotes MP3 recorder
National Geographic Pocket Topo
Odyssey Mobile Navigator
Backcountry Navigator
TCPMP Player (Orb looks ver nice!)
WMWifirouter
Resco Regedit
Phoenix Studio
Then just customize SPB like I want it, and BAM - POW! How you like me now!
I REALLY like the mount-as-disc feature for accessing the microsd. About time! I am much happier with this phone.
Thanks XDA!
Looks like you're settled on Mobile Shell. If you ever feel like using the default start menu, I use JWMD Icon Changer to sort the icons, make folders, and (obviously) change icons. As another mentioned, you can use Total Commander to move the icons.

I found these alternate TouchFlo 3D clock on these forums.

Haven't tried them on my Tilt2 yet, but likely will soon.
Also HD Tweak (works just fine on Tilt2 despite being intended for Touch HD) and Advanced Config are great places to start tweaking settings.
