Bonkers text message - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Hi all,
very strange this. There are four users of XDA-devices in my office (all on T-Mobile), myself (XDA2s), an XDA2, and two Imates (the XDA2 ones). Now, at random times throughout the day we will all recieve a text message with no sender number, but the text of the message is '13779538669'. I have never received this message on my other mobile phone (SE K700i, Voda), and I don't receive it on my Nokia when I use my T-Mobile SIM card in there!
I also only receive this message when I'm in this particular area (WA15, Hale, Cheshire), although a colleague says he gets it when he goes near Manchester Airport (5 miles from here).
What the hell? I know, I wouldn't believe it either unless I'd seen it happening but I promise you, it does happen!
In case you don't believe me :

Any thoughts?
Thanks
Dan

Its possible to send no-number SMS messages from services like http://theSMSzone.com
Maybe one of your friends is playing a prank on you?

Thanks for the reply. It seems unlikely that this is a prank, as four different people get the message and only when we are in the office, or near to the airport! I think it's a broadcast from somewhere nearby, I dunno, I'm still confused :?

Can you check what message centre the message is coming from?

Are these messages Premium-based ?(do they show up on your bill?)
Vodafone NL is unable to send out messages with the normal four-digit numbers... (5 for the uk). Instead they use eleven-digit numbers...
Perhaps in the UK it's the same?
I'd check if you have to pay for receiving those messages...
On the Vodafone website you should be able to retreive info on who's using the specific number...
Goog luck!

Agreed.
Especially since SMS's like these seem to be free coming from theSMSzone.com

Hi,
thanks for the replies, and sorry for the delay in me coming back! The messages aren't coming from a Bluetooth device, because my Bluetooth is always switched off unless I'm in the car.
I don't know how to find the service centre they're coming from, can anybody tell me how?
The messages do not appear on our bills. One thing I've noticed, now that I've upgraded to the 1.40 ROM, is that the sender now has a name of 'Network' rather than blank as it was before.
Obviously there's no harm in these messages, but they're a pain and I'd like to work out where they're coming from to satisfy my own curiousity[sp]!

my uncle has the same thing qith hi unlocked xda2i
he has a t mobile contarct and the messages seem to come fromthe network,
i will have to speak to him to find out why and when they come, but my advice is to ask tmobile about theae messages as i belive there comming from them.

Hi Ariel,
thanks for your post, and great to hear someone else has this problem and not just us! I spoke today to our service provider, who'd never heard of this before, so he spoke to T-Mobile who also claim to have never heard of this before. They want me to keep a log of dates/times when the message appears  , so that's what I'll do.

...have you tried to disable cell broadcast in your phone settings menu? this looks very much like a cell broadcast message, i can enable this on my german vodafone used device and get the area code on this way but i get also lots of bull**** notifications taht way. go to settings/phone and i guess its the third tab on the bottom (maybe fourth) where you can find channel settings for cell broadcast - unable it and it should be gone.
feedback welcome!

Hi Lutz,
thanks for the suggestion. I'm on the 1.4 ROM, so there are five tabs at the bottom of that screen; Phone, Services, Network, Band, More. In More, there is Broadcast Channels, and this box is unticked.
Thanks again

Text Message every time I get Voice Mail

On my unlocked Dash I get a text message everytime I get a voice mail, does anyone know how to turn this off? I get about 20 VM's per day so you can see how this would bother me.. I hate getting a Text Message for every Voice Mail.
Please Help or I may end up switching back to my Blackberry which I don't want to do..
Thanks
G
Thats more of the telco problem, not the phones.
I never had this problem before when I was using my blackberry? Only since I switched phones to my unlocked Dash do I get the text message for voice mail.

It's something related to your carrier, not the phone. The phone isn't sending itself a text message. Maybe the Blackberry receives a SMS notification of voicemail that is handled differently, and your Dash is receiving it as a text message... Have you signed up for Blackberry service with your carrier? Have you updated your account to non-Blackberry service? Who's your carrier? Have you contacted them at all about this?
I am using Rogers in Canada. I have a blackberry account as I am using BB Connect since my company won't allow us to connect to the exchange server directly.
I have talked to Rogers and they said it have to be the phone. We I get a VM, i get the little VM message at the top of my home screen so that is working it is just the darn text message that bothers me..
just double check.. is it a text mesage that goes into your Inbox, or just a notification bubble?
Anyway, if it is a text, a quick and dirty way to solve is temp is to have a SMS blocker in place, to filter out these messages.
Hey cool so is that is piece of software SMS Blocker? if it works like email filtering that would work.. Where can I find a SMS Blocker or is a function of the phone?
Thanks great idea!!
The reason you get a text everytime you get a new voicemail is because your "unlocked" phone does not support the the MWI ( message waiting indicator) that your mobile provider uses. I have T-mobile and they use the reel to reel icon that pops up on the top of the screen when you get a new voicemail. If you have an unlocked phone it may not support the icon your providers phones use.
I've had numerous phones with this company(by choice). I am currently using an unlocked phone that was configured for another carrier's network, some of the features do not work the same, including the Message Waiting Indicator. The goods new is you can probably stop this by having your mobile company take the Message Waiting Indicator off all together. But the Bad news is, then of course you will not be notified when you get a new voicemail.
It's a feature of the Rogers network. I have it on my account too. Still debating whether I like it or not though. I think it's part of the "WhoCalled" feature they have, but I'm not sure. It's definitely part of your Rogers service plan though.
Temp Fix for Rogers network SMS after VM
Hi, I had the same problem. It was really getting to me. Now using phone guard 1.09
Works well.
After download, DONT fill in the country code, or area code screen, just leave blank.(or you will not recieve calls, they will be send to vm, ????not sure why)
On the block screen, fill in ( [email protected] ) {for rogers} in the tel sms #, Name it what ever you want.
No more text after vm.
Later
p.s. the program runs in the back ground. Uses the least mem though.

Missing SMS / text messages

Hello,
I've suspected for a while(and confirmed with friends) that relatively often, my sms don't get to them. It's shown as sent in my phone and in the sms threads, but they simply don't recieve them.
So I tested it out with another phone, sending 5 sms' to the other phone and it only recieved the first one. the other 4 never got there... Now could this be some sort of anti spam causing it? - I did send them in rapid succession. However when I send messages from the OTHER phone to me, regardless of how quick, I get them all. And we're on the same network/provider so that doesn't seem to be the problem.
During regular use, even SMS' sent with lots of time inbetween gets lost occassionally.
I've never had this problems with my old phone so does anyone else have a clue why this is happening? As you can imagine, it's frustrating thinking someone has gotten a message but it never reached there.
Thank you.

Hey thanks for the reply, I saw that but doubt that's the same problem.. I usually list most of my numbers with +, and it shows the message is "sent". If it was the same problem as the link above, I guess it would b epossible to reproduce it everytime but mine is seemingly more random.
The specific number I tested it on was a number WITHOUT the +areacode, and even that produced 1/5 messages recieved by the other party.
Any other ideas?
I had that problem before with my touchPro. All I did was hard reset the phone, active sync my contacts and I sent out text messages. Everything worked fine after that.

Also checked http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4016381&postcount=31 ? see if the number is still correct in windows mobile?
Also try to sent from the windows interface a couple of times (in the textmessage touchflo tab touch the new sms icon in the above right corner.) see if it does better then.

God you know what, you're right. Thanks. I did look through the WM sent folder before but not far down enough..
It does seem to drop the + after the first SMS then not reapply the + until I get a reply.
Annoyingly my phone still tells me "Message Sent" instead of invalid number though, so there's no way to tell if it sent the message without going to check the sent folder I assume?
Doesn't seem like there's a fix or even a confirmed cause for this yet?
I'm having a strange reversed problem: all SMS I send are regularly delivered, but I "miss" many incoming ones. the strage thing is that it happens (AFAIK) only with my girlfriend's ones!! nobody else still complained about me not anwering, so that should mean I received and answered all other mesages.
Please note that we have the same mobile operator (Vodafone Italy)
today she tried her SIM with her bro's phone, and guess what, the problem is still here BUT the difference is in lost messages: 4 out of five lost with her Moto v9, 2 out of 6 lost with her bro's nokia. that sounds really weird to me.
where do you think the problem might be? mine/her SIM, or phone?
I'll call Vodafone Italy later, but their assistance and support is really awful, they do not even know what they are talking about, and reply with the same pre-confectioned anwers every time.

Is there some sort of app or registry setting that I could change that'd ask if I wanted to resend the message? Having to retype in messages is rather annoying.
According to this post Windows Mobile 6.1 added this feature but I don't see it and I'm running 6.5. Maybe the HTC TouchFlo 3D interface removed it?

It doesn't retain a copy of the message in your drafts folder, or outbox...? Whenever I get that message I can just pull it up from there and hit send again
Whenever I get this message, after trying to resend it a few times, I realize I tried sending a text to an email address.
Make sure the number has an area code as part of the number.
Just another possible solution.

this is the correct answer...if you have a good signal and you get that error msg, then that person has not paid their billy bill...
This problem comes up quite often if you've flashed a different radio onto your device. If you have flashed a custom radio, try out another or stock. If that's not the case, you might be in a poor coverage area. Both are common culprits, but may not apply for you.
SMS doest go to outbox folder
I have the same problem
When I have no service coverage I would like to type sms messages and as soon as I get it make phone send them all out. But unfortunately, when I don't have service HTC touch pro 2 keeps trying to send sms out and after a couple of attempts gives me message that it was not able to send it. I have to click on each message and resend it when I have service. Instead, I want my phone to put all sms into outbox sms folder and send them all when I actually have service.
I know other phones perform this function well. I went thru all settings but couldn't get it to put sms into outbox when no service available.
Does anyone have fix for that?
Also having a similar problem
Hi all,
Same, or similar thing with me. I'm on Vodafone in the UK, and I've got a friend who is on '3' in the UK. If I text him with a new fresh message, and hit send, it goes to him no problems. If he replies and I attempt to reply back - then I get "Your message could not be sent. Try again?" underlined in red. Tapping on this just generates the same problem again and again.
I've tried his number with/without spaces in it, ensured his contact name has no non-alpha characters in it, tried his number in +447xxx format as well as 07xxxx - all to no avail.
It does not happen with any other contact in my phonebook and I end up having to let the message fail, then forwarding my reply to him, so it leaves my device as a new message.
Now, as it's the UK, its nothing to do with him having not paid his bill (we don't get charged to receive SMS in the UK), and I've got great signal (I work for a Vodafone associated company and we've got a cell on-site, so it's full signal of HSUPA for me).
I am completely at a loss to understand why this happens - I have other friends on '3' that SMS's go to fine, so I'm guessing it's not a Vodafone to '3' issue either.
Any ideas anyone?!
Adam C.
PS: Stock ROM running WM6.5, unlocked GSM, nothing odd about the configuration/software either!
...bump.
Anyone?
Thx,
a.

SMS delay/not retrieving :(

Hey guys,
Picked up a desire yesterday and its great, though I'm having some issues with sms. I notice I don't receive any texts until I send a text first, then I'll receive 2 or 3 texts, timestamped in the past, up to an hour ago!
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks.
edit: unrooted on o2
i get a similar problem, i know i should have received a text message but it doeant show up for hours.
unrooted on tmobile uk
Most likely when your phone is connected over GPRS the text don't come through till you disconnect, used to happen on my N95.
So if my phone is operating in GPRS mode, until it decides it doesn't need the internet anymore and disconnects, it won't retrieve texts... right. So any workarounds or fixes for this?
Prety much, after I use GPRS I just made a call and during or after the call my text came in.
Been getting this all day, are people really just dealing with this or is it only a few people that have this issue?
I am having another problem... on T-mobile, my phone won't download MMS messages. It will just say Download error, General Network Failure... After it expired (3days) , I was sent a link to the T-mobile website, where I am able to see it for 14 days.
Another problem that I am having, the phone is struggling sending long text messages... 4 or 5 normal lenght messages 500-600 characters... I am using the Text App provided with the phone.
I have a problem that I dont think is an actual problem I think its just how the phone works, and tbh its a bit rubbish.
If you dont have signal when you hit send (im my office at work I only get signal on a little square of the desk) the phone says "message not sent". Sometime when it gets signal it will send the message, but if it doesnt get signal quick enough it seems to just give up sending.... a bit lame really....
I'm going to post a message up with the T-mobile UK MMS settings so people in future can find it on search. Have a look in 5 mins.
JAmes.
I've got the same issue with my HTC Desire.
My operator is a Belgium one, namely Mobistar.
I've got the impression that when i open the sms box, i start seeing the messages. Don't know if it's the communication that goes wrong, or the 'throughput' in the phone (screen, alerting...).
After installing (and using of course) chompSMS, this problem is gone... yipppie...

[Q] SMS to MMS Fix

Firstly, I would like to pay respect to the developers who mapped the hardware button for the camera app. Respect to you all. Starting this thread hoping those same geniuses would be able to solve this problem. Android generally has this crazy notion that if i want to send a long sms, it will be cheaper for me to send an mms. I get like unlimited sms but i gotta pay for each mms i send so everytime i need to send a long sms, it costs me money. plus, if the recipient does not have mms configured, its money lost from my side and nothing recieved on theirs. so is there any way to stop the native messaging app from converting sms to mms after 3 sms length.
currently using Handcent sms for long sms but its a pain and it crashes often.

uhm.
why would a long sms convert to a mms?
I've never seen this happen.
Have no idea why this happens. if i use "MyPhoneExplorer" to compose sms on pc and send them, this problem doesn't occur. tonight, i decided to send a long sms directly from my phone and i saw that it converts to mms. so decided to google it and it appears Xplay isn't the only phone with this problem. a quick browse on google shows that loads of device owners are frustrated by this. check it out on your stock device as mine is stock also. just bootloader unlocked and rooted ;-)
Yea, mine does the same, bootloader locked, and does it un-rooted and rooted.
Very annoying. You'd think sony ericsson would have made this an option.
But i did have this issue with 2.1 on my motorola milestone.
mine just gives me a notification saying it will send 2 SMS, it even counts down hoow many characters i have left until it adds another SMS to it (only when below 20 character left)

I just tested mine to 5 sms. All it does it countdown how many characters I have left for each sms, and then adds another sms.
Converting into an mms sounds like a cheap trick to make more money by some carriers.
I am with Vodafone Uk and they don't use this trick yet it seems, although thanks for this post because now I will be keeping an eye out for this.
Still don't see it as much of a problem though. Just send one sms at a time?
Happens often here (when going into 4th txt), I just break messages down not to get stung with a MMS charge.
It can be annoying as when breaking the message down you can get a reply from the other side before they have read the full message, which can cause confusion.

Well the solution is to go with a network provider that doesn't adopt this cheap tactic.
Alternatively, telephone them and threaten legal action with demand for all lost money sent on mms.
Changing an sms into an mms can not possibly be legal.

Ok just to make a few things clear. I noticed this problem on my Xplay which has a stock rom 2.3.2 and i got it sim-free. i have tried it with several different vendors, like vodafone UK, 3, O2 and international vendors in Pakistan as well. Also, i've tried composing a message with no sim in it and still have the same problem. So its a problem with the OS and not network related. Saw the same problem on a stock Galaxy S Sim-free.
So Devs, please find a solution to this if possible.

how can it be network providers?
I got my handset SIM free (generic UK rom) and have used a few networks. it does it on all of them. and reports of it being the same on other Android devices.
It is nothing to do with networks, it Android OS.
