Phone functionality comparison between system 1.11 and 1.13 - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

Hello guys, I would like to hear from You if you have similar problems in 1.13 version as I have in 1.11 test rom, any answer will help me with the upgrade decision:
- “contact” soft key is on the RIGHT when desktop is visible, on the LEFT in phone application and in the MIDDLE button during the phone call. JUST Imagine somebody in the car who wants to make a phone call….. especially with MISSING REAL HARDWARE BUTTONS to assign the contacts to…
- In the phone application – last unanswered phone call is not displayed on the phone screen – you have to click HISTORY to see it – just the same problem in the car – somebody is calling you, you can not get out the device on time, so you press twice TINY TINY green button on the hinge, and …. You call the last number you have called before…not the last missed one
- Phone application just shuts itself of and Universal comes to the desktop screen WHY? (Imagine AGAIN in the car….)
- REALLY ugly TMobile skin, but the original blue skin has to low contrast….Again IN THE CAR…
- maybe I did not try hard enough but I can not obtain predictable results with the onscreen quickdial (not to mismatch with SPEED DIAL butto which Is OK, )– how to obtain the names starting with second or third letter from the key – I don’t know, and anyway it does not work if you have about 1500 contacts as I have
- check how SPEED DIAL it was done in the old handspring TREO phones – large buttons with the names on them in two columns rather than one list, with whole screen “pages” of 12 contacts each, for me much easier to use and navigate if you have more than one screen of numbers as in the car there is no chances for easy up and down navigation, what you have to do now with the numbered list.
- With all this missing hardware buttons what happened with the D-Pad functionality – in Blue Angel it was UP- History DOWN – speed dial … but in Universal nothing works ?????
- “during the call” screen with 6 soft buttons stays on when the phone call is already finished – again you do not find the soft buttons in the right places when you want to make next call
- When I got rid of the TM skin video call button is missing, I can not use UMTS yet as it is not available in Krakow, but it will be needed some time…
- No BT icon on the desktop – no chances for the quick verification of the proper connection between headset and the unit
- I have heard that voice dialing functionality does not work when the unit is closed (I always keep it open – screen on the top)
- There is no voice dialing available when the unit is protected by the password (but this is disputable)

Voice dialing SW for mapping green (Send button) got it!!!1

is their any SW that can mimic the long green (Send)button so i can assign it to a a voice dialling SW, i have a Nokia BT that don't support voice dialing because its voice dialing don't support anything but the Send button in which in the regular button mapping it only supports changing the few side buttons but not the send/close ones
thanks in advance
ok since i have not got a reply so far i tried something considered intelligent, need some steering though, what i did is i installed phoneplus
Main Idea
1.most of the headset will mimic the short & long send (Green) button press which will activate the cprog.exe dialer right.
2. since i have no idea where is cprog mapped to this button i needed to install phone plus because it will teachme how the mapping done
Theory
1. if i replace the ppcap.exe with voicecommand.exe everywhere in the system then when i psychly press the green button i should get "Voice command is ready" instead of the dialer pad, in this situation of you press on the headset button it should also trigger the Voicecommand.exe instead of cprog.exe or the ppcap.exe
Fact
1. i tried this & it didn't work when i replaced the ppcap.exe with voicecommand.exe ofert renaming the voicecommand to ppcap for the program to think it is the same, it actually went a launched the original dialer
requiments, well i need more people to try steps like those & to stop me if they know a fact i don't.
if their is some kind of a logger (key logger) we can intiate it & press the headset button see what does it do & make it connect to the voice dialing SW
You are a brave man
What you ask is possible, as you can activate voice command via the button in the Mpx (which is also pocketpc phone edition).
Unfortunately I dont think its easy, but please keep on investigating and tell us of your progress.
surur
i so far managed to get my PPC giving me error messages like the following
1. Cannot open Cprog.exe (Dialer SW)
2. Cannot execute repllog.exe (i have no idea what is it about)
anyways this is a good sign, if i can replace cprog.exe with voicecmd.exe after renaming voicecmd.exe to cprog.exe i think the logic say that it should launch it, & if it does the BT Headset should launch it & if it does! well we got it working the stupid way but this is the begging
PS another though for those who program viruses, can't we program a parasite sw that attaches it self to cprog.exe & everytime its triggered it launches voicecmd.exe
am sorry all my test are on microsoft voice but because it the only full SW i have now
AM ALMOST THERE DUDES BUT I REALLY NEED HELP NOW, i got as far as when i press the button on my nokia bt headset to activate the voice command, though since the head set is not a hands free expectedly i didn't hear from the BT headset i heared it from the phone & ofcourse i had to speak to the phone not the BT HD to get it dialing something, now i know that thei are some SW that or BT stacks that does that, please guid me through
ONE MORE THING CPROG HAS TO BE LOADED which i actually managed to **** in the process so i also need the file cprog.exe to replace my overwritten one, otherwise your phone will not ring nore have signal bars though it will not be swtiched off & if you have the headset you'll hear the ring in it but will not be able to answer the phone, so next 2 steps are
1. Load both files & not only voicecommand or cprog
2. somehow move the voice & the mic to be working from the BT HD & not the phone
Unfortunatley I could not copy the cprog.exe to my desktop PC to send it to you... The system does not let you copy System Files...
You will have to perform a hard reset in order to get the cprog.exe back... Or maybe try to delete the modified cprog.exe and the original should be ready to use after a soft reset...
Besides, as far as I know there are no Hands Free Profile for our devices, not even with Bluetooth patches installed...
Nice try though...
well since i backup regularly i reseted my device & got a back so thanks but i got the cprog.exe , i think its **** anyways to make the major move & get stuck on something like hands free profile, i still need the cprog.exe as i file as i couldn't get it too, i have to put it on the startup so the phone will work properly then probably assign it somewhere else on the contrary anybody with some knowledge of how to make files.lnk launch multiple programs instead of one or anybody who have some idea about how hands free profile works will be of a great help
PS come on guys if we scratch our heads together we can make it, poeple here made wonders, i guess this is in hand
handsfree very near
hi, actually i use mobidial to try your idea. when i press green button mobidial will launch. so very easy i just copy everything in microsoft voice command folder and dump it to modial folder and rename voice command.exe as mobiDial.exe. when i press the green button using my headset and yes voice command is activated and function also but it will work for the first time and then the ppc will hang. reset n will work for one time again. anybody? we r very close to handsfree here.

Locking utility

I am not the only one to complain about incoming calls and locking utilities but I haven't found a clear answer yet. That's why I start this new post. Let me clarify that I'm talking abouts UIs other than the TF3D.
I've tried several UIs (WAD2, Spb MS3) in conjunction to several locking applications but there is always something wrong :
1) The built-in locking utility seems to be the most reliable but the tweak which enables that (section 4.1 in HD tweak) also suffers from the blacklight problem. That is, if the backlight turns low (e.g. while playing music) it never turns high again unless the power button is pressed.
2) S2U2 (1.62) takes a lot of time to wake up on an incoming call either when using WAD2 or Spb MS3. When it does, the WM Caller ID does not display correctly. In some cases, the phone wakes up but it takes 4-5 more seconds to start ringing. Furthermore, the hardkeys are not locked. As a result, when you try to take the HD out of your pocket it is highly unlike that you'll press no button accidentally ... A similar situation holds for the S2U2 built-in Caller ID screen.
3) S2U2 does not cooperate well with WAD2. When the phone wakes up by pressing the power button it keeps flipping between WAD2 and S2U2 for 2 seconds. This time is enough for allowing all WAD2 softbuttons to be pressed accidentally ...
3) Throttle Lock looks very nice but it does not support any exceptions. When the alarm clock rings, you have first to unlock the device and then press the "Dismiss" button
I'm desparate. Any help would be wellcome
I am in the same shoe as you. I have touch HD and I tried many locks but all have some conflicts with windows or other software in one way or the other.
Temporarily, I use AE Buttons and set all keys to double clicking...
Have you tried Pocket Shield? I don't know, if it is compatible to WAD2, but for me it is the best locking app that I tried.
Hi
Pocket Shield is really nice but :
* It DOES flicker a lot on incoming call if you want to keep the HTC dialer (software author recommends disabling this dialer, but I won't... it's so much better than WM6.1's built-in dialer).
* It does not provide features such as showing next appointments or upcoming alarms. It's nice to be able to wake the device, have a quick glance at information about your next appointment and then leave the device automatically go back to sleep (like in S2U2 for example). Maybe there's a plugin for such a thing in Pocket Shield ?
Just my two cents (I'm still looking for a better solution )
Cheers,

Showing appointments etc is not a prerequisite for me as I have all this info on my home screen (Spb MS3). On the other hand, flickering is a major problem as it may take a lot of time to stabilize. In the meanwhile, the call is lost !
It seems that you use a Diamond, not an HD. Could an HD owner describe the time delay on his device using PocketShield ?
Furthermore, can somebody verify that PocketShield can handle exceptions (GPS software, music players, alarm clocks etc) ?
Touch Diamond and Touch HD have the exact same hardware, CPU speed, RAM etc...

At the moment Pocketshield satisfies me. It has exception function, you can add some programs to unlock when they start. For example G-alarm...
Although I haven't tried Pocketshield yet, I think that I've got the solution to my problems. It is called LockMeLite (LmL) and it's free. It does not power off the device (as S2U2 does). It only locks it when the device wakes up.
1) Flickering takes no more than half a second and only the left softkey of the HTC Caller ID appears (not the full Caller screen).
2) The screen reacts almost instantly. I checked it many times by calling myself.
3) The ring tone takes 2-3 second to sound but I think I can live with that.
4) No appointments, tasks etc info. Only battery level, time and missed calls. No problem for me as I use Spb MS3 and all this info is available at the home page
5) Spb alarm works almost fine. It almost overrides LmL and can be dismissed or snoozed without need to unlock the device.
6) Very small app (658 kB cab file including four background images).
7) No battery drain.
8) Pocketmusic works fine as it does allow the device to sleep but it only turns the backlight low.
9) I haven't tried it with any GPS software yet.
Please try it and post your comments. Just discovered this small piece of art and for me it works better than any other locking app.
LockMeLite is good but it's not compatible with Resco keyboard and FingerKeyboard2 on the Touch HD. These keyboard gets lifted off screen or does not redraw well.
It does not work with Resco Contact Manger 1.11 as well on the Touch HD.

I do use SPB MS3 too, but to look at the home screen, you must unlock the device, which I don't want to do...

WM 6.1 is driving me crazy

Hi all,
I've been searching a few hours here, i have not found any working solution for the following problems (occuring since i got a new PDA - Asus P750 running WM6.1) I was using before a P525 with WM5, and so i lost many things :
- how to get back the "Call history" button instead of "Dial" ? I want to get the full call history, and not mixed with the contacts
- how to set by default the numeric pad ? Anytime i press a number on the button, it displays letters instead, like if i had to type a SMS from it
- How to restore the long press on the "#1" to launch the voicemail ? Now it launches the smartdial stupid thing
- Why does a bluetooth headset get inactive when i accept calls by pressing the PDA button instead of the headset one ? I have to do this, otherwise i have no sound on the bluetooth headset
This new way on WM6.1 to use the phone looks a bit strange to me ...
Thank you.
Sounds like your issues are unique to your device/ROM I do not have any of the issues you have described. Perhaps someone who uses your type of device may know better.
it all depends on the dialer you are using. Have you looked at using a PhoneCanvas dialer such as MBO PhoneCanvas?
Thanks, i'll have a look.
By the way, i have another question : before with WM5, i could switch to different profils (sound tone, vibrator, total silence) by using the buttons on the side of the phone. It is not possible anymore. Instead, it selects things on the today page.
Did it disappear with WM6 or do you thing it is only with the Asus P750 ?
Thanks.
Asking in the wrong place -- try posting your questions in the general area.

In the settings menu, select buttons and see if you have an option for the up/down button on the side of the phone. On my 6.1 Touch Pro2, there isn't this option for that button. So if its there, it probably wasn't from the stock rom.

They don't exist :\ Only one button to customize (for launching applications)
Thanks.
Any clue to set by default the numeric pad ? There's probably one tweak in the registry.

Not impressed

I've just upgraded to a Desire coming from a Touch HD (Dutty Holy Grail) and have to say that first impressions are not great. Seriously thinking about returning it but interested to hear other people's experience.
So far moaning about the following problems - well more inconveniences:
- keyboard too jumpy
- can't call contact directly from email
- no hardware button to end call - pain when leave a voice message as need to turn phone on, unlock it and then end call.
- double syncs everything (on exchange server) so that appointment entries appear twice in calendar
- the home screen apps are kind of useless as you basically need to launch the full app to be able to do anything (ie email or sms)
- sms messaging doesn't tell you how many letters you have left
- no messaging in facebook
- headphone volume quiet (and that's with in ear headphones where on my HD I had the volume set to 1!)
- battery life atrocious in comparison. charged my phone last night and had a full charge before going to bed and when I woke up it was at 30%. no wifi or bluetooth on.
Will persevere another few days to make sure that I'm not just a grumpy old fart who hates change....
Take it back then. And my sms shows how many letter i have left.
I'll answer some of your points because a few are valid.
Could you elaborate on calling from emails? You mean the phone picking up that you have a number stored for a contact and allowing you to dial them? I've tried this and it works. You need to be using the HTC mail client, not the Gmail one.
"no hardware button to end call - pain when leave a voice message as need to turn phone on, unlock it and then end call."
I couldn't reproduce this use case at all. Your screen locks while you're in a call? A SHORT call too? Or are you just positing a use case you THINK could happen? The screen goes blank when you raise it to your ear and turns back on when you take it away...what you describe can't happen.
If you've got double syncing then there's a configuration error. Elaborate. How did you set it up? Are you syncing with your work email or a webmail account?
The home screen "apps" are not apps, they're widgets, and function like every other widget I've ever seen, they just give info and limited functions. You wanted to send email FROM a widget?!
"sms messaging doesn't tell you how many letters you have left"
Mostly because text limits have all but disappeared. Does your provider still cap you? You should get a new provider.
Your device is still new...you need a few charging cycles to get the battery at full potential.
The other issues are pretty spot on...the keyboard I'm used to now though. Trust the predictive text.

1. I have never seen that feature before. Would definitely be handy.
2. That annoys me too, but I guess it's just a matter of getting used to it.
3. Use a replacement SMS app. Handcent is my favorite.
4. Blame Facebook for that. They won't allow it, even in their official app which is stupid.
5. Strange, I have the impression that the headphone volume is quite loud.
6. You might have an application running in the background which is draining the battery and keeping the phone awake. See related threads in this forum for more info.
keyboard - Like all keyboards, it takes time to get used to. Trust the autocomplete feature and you'll be surprised. Best soft keyboard I've ever used.
Yes, you can call directly from email. Just tap the sender and their contact card will open which includes the option to call them.
No hardware call buttons - It's an inconvenience but you knew they weren't there before you bought it.
Exchange sync issue - Maybe something with your settings? I have it synced with Google's Exchange server with no problems.
Widgets - Yes, I share your opinion on many of the widgets. You might as well just launch the main application. They are pretty to look at though...
SMS - Perhaps download a 3rd party SMS application?
Facebook - no comment. I don't use it.
Headphone volume - I read here that some carriers limit the max volume on their devices. Perhaps they did that to yours? My device's max volume is pretty deafening.
Battery life - If you read reviews, you'll know that battery life is not impressive. But do give it several charge cycles and sync your data as conservatively as possible. You might find the battery life to be acceptable.

OUCH! Headshot! Be gentle it;s a new device ...
... Ok moving on ...
Actually don't worry been beaten ...
Like I said, the keyboard issue is just that you will need time to get used to it.
If you have a contact saved with a number and email and they send you mail, you will see their picture in the corner...tap it. You will get a speech bubble type box pop up that has the option to phone them, send them a message (text or email) or go to their contact card. Make sure you've merged your contacts. It won't work if you have a separate contact card for their phone details and then another for their email.
Again...is SMS length an issue still for people? I've not thought about those arbitrary 140 character limits since my first Motorola Wings flip phone.
Compared to my HD2 the Desire's keyboard is a DREAM to use - HD2 was skitty as hell and all over the shop. Desire's never misses a key and can type a LOT quicker on it personally...
Never bothered to know number of characters left in an SMS, doesn't bother me
Battery life, with all sync options on default, is about 48hrs give or take an hour...
Double sync IS annoying but I don't sync with Google anymore so got rid of that...
Facebook app, don't care about messaging as my phone is to keep up-to-date, PC is to contact...
Not bothered about hardware key for end call, call ends when you press the BIG red button at the end of a call (don't need to unlock or anything first)
Headphones - don't use them as phone isn't a music player to me, it's a phone
1. Get used to it, you will be fine. I moved from HTC Kaiser with hardware keyboard and I found the HTC Desire virtual keyboard is very good and responsive.
2. No idea, but as several posts above, you actually can do it.
3. You should know this already before purchase.
4. No idea
5. Widget is nice, this is unique to Android. You dont have to use it if you dont like. Then put app shortcut in the home screen, typical winmo thingy.
6. Use other messaging client like Hancent
7. Blame Facebook Or use Nimbuzz / Fring!
8. Check your settings, my battery life is amazing, on moderate usage it could last more than 48 hours (this include several hours (2-3) a day browsing on WiFi and gaming).

I charged mine to 100% last night, took it off charge at 1am, woke up at 8:20 am, checked my phone....98% !!
i use Juice Defender (one of my settings is to disable Apn/Wifi from midnight till 8am, works well
Thanks for the comments. Proves I'm a grumpy old fart! lol
Some good replies which I will investigate further.
Aitese - your comment about the screen going black and then turning back on when you remove it from your ear... is there a light sensor setting? as mine stays black until i tap power button unless i am talking to an actual person (rather than machine) and they hang up first.
Syncing is being done with a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. But I think I may have just solved issue as it appears to sync both with my laptop and the server without realising they are showing the same appointments. Just too used to MS ActiveSync which works it out.
The keyboard is still bugging me - have tried to train it using the calibrate option but still seems off. That is the top row of keys that I push match up but when i go to the second last row it always hits the last row which being space and punctuation tends to terminate the word.
Anyhow will persevere. Appreciate everyone indulging a grumpy old codger...
great tip thanks - will look for that app.

If you hold the phone under a bright light you'll see the sensors in the top left corner of the black bezel. To test it, make a call and then move your thumb over the top left corner and then away again...the screen should turn off when your thumb gets near and turn back on shortly after you move away. Call your voicemail box or customer service
For sms use handcent its brill and it gives you letter count. For facebook i use babbler as it gives you notification for inbox.

BetterKeyboard plus the accompanying DarkGray theme is by far the best Android keyboard out there. HTC_IME (i.e. the HTC keyboard you're hating on) seems to be well thought of in the community but I personally hate it and think BetterKeyboard wipes the floor with it.
A few thoughts
- I just want to add a few thing giving that I also came from an HD. Compared to the HD which only had a light sensor, the Desire also comes with a proximity sensor that monitors if you have your ear close to the phone regardless of light (on the HD the screen only turned off if it was day and it could actually sense a difference in light).
If you make a call and put your phone to your ear it turns the screen off WITHOUT locking it, and when you want to terminate a call by taking it from your ear it will turn on again but not locked.
The phone locks itself only it you don't activate the proximity sensor (like when you are using a bluetooth headset and you don't take to phone to your ear). When that happenes the screen turns off after 15 seconds and yes, if you turn it on then it will be locked.
- Why do you want a hardware button for call and end? The capacitive screen with the combination of the proximity sensor makes them useless?
-Another thing i can chip in is related to the sms thing. The default SMS app shows you the number of characters left and the number of messages already typed when you are nearing the end of a message.
It shows that above the send button. If you have less the 10 characters available in that message it'll show 10/1 above the send button, and it will decrease and then turn into 145/2 saying that you have 145 characters left untill reaching 2 messages. After that it'll stay on and counting without dissapearing, until you send the message.
I find this to be a goog feature because it only warns me if i exceed one SMS.
I have used it for 2 days, and I am out of space installing apps on the HTC desire. WTF.. it can't use the 16 gig memory card to install apps and games?
There is no way I'm going to Win MO again.. but seriously.. WTF.

none of these probs appear to be desire probs but rather strange layer 8 probs
Yeah the keyboard issue is due to the resistive v capacitive screens. The resistive screens need a good push, the capacitive ones need a slight touch. You get used to it.
for facebook, a new version is downloadable which give access to your INBOX.. which is what i assume was meant?

[Q] Where to submit feature requests?

Is there any place (or a best place?) to submit feature requests for Wear? I can post here but I do not know if anyone from Google will get the message. OTOH, I've seen some mentions of feature requests here and other members posted apps or tips and tricks to meet the need. The features I'm thinking of are:
- double tap on the screen or the button to bring up the most recent app. (Someone else mentioned this and I really like it.) I use my watch when running so to bring up my running app I need to (1) opening the screen, (2) expanding the notification, (3) swipe to the side to get the "open app" screen and (4) tap on the "open screen button." This is a real PITA while running and is further exacerbated by profuse perspiration confusing the watch WRT my touch. It would be nice if the app could cooperate and return to the last active screen as well. An alternative to this would to tie a particular app to the double tap via configuration entry.
- Ability to turn the screen off during charging. The 'tips and tricks' answer to this is just too involved when I'm ready to slip into bed! Maybe if I could program or script the actions... There are times when the screen turns off when I place the watch in charger and that would be fine as a configuration option. Other times it seemed like I can do that by palming the screen or tapping the button (but this doesn't normally work.) That would be useful too.
- Single button press to activate the button on a screen. Back to my use case for running... It can be difficult to get the pause/stop button to register due to perspiration. This one is a little problematic because it conflicts with the existing function to turn the screen off with a button tap. However palming the screen with sweaty hands seems to be easily recognized vs. scrolling or tapping a button.
I'd like to have an option to have the mic on the watch turn on when accepting a call from the watch. There are times when my phone is upstairs and I get an incoming call on my watch. It would be nice to be able to answer the call and give the person on the other line a heads up that you need a second or two to get your phone. Once the call is accepted on the watch, there could be a button that transfers the live mic to the phone.
