4gb sd card? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Will it work on the xda IIs?

It may. A user on another forum just reported succesfully using a Tanscend 4gb card in his XV6600 even though he was told it would only support 2gb...http://www.pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=61612

Have tested with 2GB SData SD card myself, works fine. Didn't have 4gb but it should work as well.
The SX66 supported SD list was created back when the highest SD card was like 512meg or 1gig, that's why the supported lists are different

hi, thanks for the replies. i see it everything should be fine using a 4gb sd card.

due to the nature of the BA, and as far as i kno all other fairly recent PDAs they will support all current and future SD cards as they don't suffer the limited memory addressing of smaller less complex devices such as normal mobile phones like nokias and digital cameras
i've read somewhere the SD card standard will theoretically go up to 16gb, lets hope they arn't too far away, and that the BA will support it.
Still hoping some random company will develop and release an SDIO USB host though. Damn the BA not having Compact Flash.

Using fast SD cards?

I see these 66x superfast SD memory cards advertised. Will using one speed up my blue angel?
Can programs use this SD card for operating memory or can they only use the intenal memory?
Does having <5mb avaialable slow down your device?
Fast Sd Cards
Fast Sd cards are only useful for SLR Pro cameras. The rest of the devices are using normal card reader slots. i.e. even if you were to use a fast SD card in the sd card slot, you will only get the normal speed.
by rest of the devices, i mean, all pocket pcs, ppc phones, phones and such devices...... :x
moali77 is correct. it won't make much of a difference in your pda. however, if you use a card reader, or happen to have a digicam that can utilize the speed, you will be better off.
example: i played atlantis redux recently 100mb+ required to be put on your sd card. instead of copying it through activesync, i put it in my usb2.0 card reader, copied it over, in far less time than it would've taken if i did it the other way.
but if you don't plan for much of that, then don't bother paying the premium for a fast card =)
Well I bought a Kingston Elite Pro Secure Digital 1GB, think It's 7.7/8.2MB Write/read
It made my TomTom go way faster planning routes and generally give me better performance from other apps.
I dont know the Top speed for the BA SD Slot, but you should look at the speeds of the card you are planning to buy

Have others experienced similar variations with different SDs?
I recently responded to Wamatt's other posting about SD cards in the BA accessories forum. In it, I've described my experiences with the SD card listed in my sig and BA speed tests I've done with it.

xda2i is compatible with 4Gb SD cards

Hello
I would like to know if the xda2i is compatible with 4Gb SD cards
Thanks
I would assume so as its a standard fit. Wont be very fast though?? Where and what kind of price are you looking at??
gingerchristopher
bit of an update. the 2i wont work with all 2g cards. so I am asuming that it wont work with the 4g. if anyone else finds out it would be good to know.
gingerchristopher
I have alpine with 2Gb Transcend card... All is OK.
I have just seen an ad for a 4Gb card on EBay advertised as compatable with the XDA 2i, I use a 150x 2Gb myself but noticed this card was also a 150x and good value at £65
As posted here I'll try the 4gb SD card we have at work tomorrow.
Yep, worked fine. It was a 4gb 150x card (£120 >.<) and it worked fine.
The XDA IIi employs the Intel's PXA272 as its core processor. The SD controller of the PXA272 currently supports one SD or SDIO card based on the standards outlined in the SD Memory Card Specification Version 1.01 and SDIO Card Specification Version 1.0 (Draft 4). Unfortunely, the maximum capacity of SD card defined in version 1.01 is only 2GB.

If you're saying the XDA IIi does not support 4Gb SD cards, you're wrong, since I tested the one that is sitting on a shelf where I work and it was fine.

Actually, I really don't know whether the XDA IIi is able to support 4GB SD card or not. I found the technical info in Intel PXA27x Processor Family Developer’s Manual and SD Specifications part1. Version 2.0 SD spec can support up to 32GB SD card but Version 1.01 only 2GB. And, the SD controller of PXA27X is built on Version 1.01.
p.s. Here are references:
1) page 16, "2. System Features", SD Specifications part1 Physical Layer Specification Version 2.00 Draft
2) page 737, "15.1 Overview", Intel PXA27x Processor Family Developer’s Manual
32Gb? How much is that going to cost?
I thought a 4Gb card was a bit excessive!
As I know, everything is ok with 4Gb.
Just bought a 4Gb Zynet 150x SD card and it seems to work fine, although I have not tried copying a whole 4Gb to it.
That was on my XDA II (since my IIi is currently having it's screen repaired!)
Incidentally, does anyone know what the max transfer speed of the II and IIi is to the SD card?
Thanks
Steve
P.S. My Casio Exilim EX-S600 can't see all 4Gb, but can write to it.
4GB sd card shows wring usage information
Hi,
I have just bought 4GB SD card for my XDA IIi, I copied all my music on them. But surprisingly enough, music and some data I have copied is total 1.9 GB, but the memory tools shows only 245MB free. where has another 1.7 GB gone? Does this mean it doesn't support 4GB?
Regards!
Narayan
Edit: Q answered
unfortunately not
hi
I bought a 4gb SD card in order to try it with my alpine.
unfortunately it isn't compatible.

I can verify 4Gb works well, I have been using a TOPRAM 4Gb 150x in my XDA 2i for the last 9 months or so and no issues at all currenly it has about 3.2Gb of data on but is just the same stpeed to use as my old 1Gb 150x SD. TomTom works fin, movies play well and no issues with software or MP3s just dont put any today plugins on your SD as that will affect performance.
hy guys.
i would like to know if xda IIi supports 8gb SD cards?because on ebay those are really cheap(like 15€ = cca. 20$), i know its not lots of money, but i dont want to buy something it wont work...now i have 2gb RS MMC card in it with adapter from my old nokia 6630, and works fine, just not big enough for divx movies etc
regards
Sadly 4gb is the largest non HC cards I have seen, wether micro or SD anything above 4 gb seems to be an HC and HC cards will not work (Or so everyone tells me I believe them as it is a different interface standard)
so it also work on xda II?

8GB SD card debuts!!!

From PRETEC, here:-

I found one on eBay for £96.00 + £4.00 p&p.
150X 8GB OEM SAMSUNG SECURE DIGITAL SD CARD 8 GB G NEW
Looks good.
Gonna test that on Universalinux too?
wonder if it will work in a prophet (JAMin)
RE
If your PDA do not have a SDHC slot then PRETEC card is not backward compatible
Quote
"SDHC cards are recognized by new SDHC host devices differently than standard SD cards and are not backward compatible with legacy SD format host devices. "
Bad luck!!
What IS SDHC compatible?
I was gonna ask that one, so i will ask it anyway!
What is SDHC?
Never mind, i found this information:
http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/File/pdf/retail/SDHC1.pdf#search="sdhc compatible"
But now we need to know whether our Universal is SDHC compatible or not. Has anyone managed to find out if these new cards work with our PDA's?
Maximum capacity for this device: May support up to 2GB
But we know that's already true. So...
This quote is right from the article linked to by the first post here...
The maximum capacity of SD card is 2GB under SD 1.1 of Secure Digital Alliance (SDA) specification; however, by using file format of FAT32, many SD 1.1 host devices can use a 4GB SD card. SD 1.0/1.1 uses traditional "Byte Addressing" scheme which limits the maximum capacity to 4GB while SD 2.0 adopts "Sector Addressing" scheme which can reach the maximum capacity of 2TB (2048GB).

In other words, they 'cheat' to get the Universal and other SD 1.1 devices to see 4G, but that won't work with the 8G cards.
Brett
Would the Universal still not work with an 8GB SD card if that card was partitioned into 2x 4GB's? It certainly would be helpful if someone could try this? You just never know!
re
I guess no one will know for sure until someone tries it. BTW how do you partition a SD card anyways? Do you really think that could work?
hello
if SD 2.0 is the later version then would not all new 4 GB SD cards support "sector addressing" which would limit the ma. capacity to 2 GB
I have a 4gb that works in uni
I keep reading that people aren't able to use anything above a 2gb SD but I have been using a 4gb that I purchased on eBay for pver 6 months now. I used in with the original Jasjar ROM and also with JWrite's, Indra, and currently Helmi's. (not with the WM6's yet though)
It is interesting to note however that it won't work in any of my desktop or laptop systems without the included dongle. Not even the built in SD slot in my TC1100 tablet.
It says it's made by a company called "TopRam" if that helps anyone.
I also purchased an 8gb that SUPPOSEDLY supports SD 1.1 and 2.0 according to the documentation. It took a great deal of hunting to find one that didn't say it was HC and I'm still skeptical as to whether or not it will actually work, but as soon as it comes in and I have a chance to try it I will post the results here if anyone is interested.
I know there are one or two people here who make claims of such things, but if there are any doubters I will take some screenshots of the storage card memory screen if I need to.
SDHC uses a different software for the controller. The hardware is exactly the same. The point I'm trying to make, is that the SD people went to very radical lengths to ensure that there is no compatibility betweens SD and SDHC. They also have two different kinds of memory addressing. Bottom line, you can't use SDHC. Your device must say SDHC, and AFAIK, no PDA is SDHC compatible. With all of that said, I'm a Scoter owner, and we have valid reports of being able to access SDHC cards from a PC, through my device. It may be possible to create drivers for the SD controller, or create some kind of emulator, but that is a long way off. I've seen similar threads about those asking about 4 GB and 8 GB. Unfortunetly most don't understand the difference between SD and SDHC. SD is capable of 4 GB. SDHC starts at 2 GB and has potential in the terrabyte range. In addition, many of the real cheap 4 GB SD cards don't strictly adhere to SD standards, and may work on some reader designs, and not on others. A perfect example is that I bought a 4 GB SD card, that only works on one card reader, but not my PC reader or PDA.
Regards,
Jason
SDHC Patch
I just read on a forum for Palm Treo that they have a working patch for the Treo which forms compatibility of SDHC on the Treo.
Now perhaps we can take a lesson from them and see what changes where needed to make it work. Besides, you can't tell me that there are more people working of patches for the PalmOS than WM.
well , the sdhc 8gb does not work on my xda exec-universal. so I just bought a 4gbcard "MyMemory 4GB 133X SD" from ebay that is stated as being compatible 21.94 pounds.
I'll just use my sdhc 8gb as an expensive mem stick in my sweex sdhc reader .
got it
So I received my 8gb (supposedly NON SDHC) and as expected, it won't read in my Jasjar. I am going to try and reformat it into 2 or 4gb partitions to see if that will work but I am going guess and say no. It is already in fat32 but it doesn't recognize the card at all in the PDA. Just to make sure it was in fact a full 8gb (7.6gb actually) I copied a handfull of movies (7gb) to it and then ran them on another laptop and it is in fact a good card.
I can't repartition it in XP since it sees it as a removable disk, so as soon as I get my Linux laptop back up and running, I will repartition it there and see what happens. I don't expect much though.

Could you, please, try AKU 3.5 ROM (Helmi 1.3.1 or Ivan B2)?
Because this ROM comes from device which support SDHC.
There were reports also, that Triniti with last Dopod ROM (AKU 3.5)
support Mini SDHC 4GB (maximum for mini SD now).
BTW tell us which ROM you are tryinng.
why not
If someone will send me the link to the rom files, I'll be glad to. I just don't have a lot of time right now to search the ftp site.
Two questions about Helmi's 1.3.1, first, will it support my bluetooth stereo headset like the pdaviet 207 I'm using now does? and second, I don't suppose any of these new roms has the new timechange fix already applied do they? I just don't want to keep reflashing my Jasjar and still having to apply all the reg fixes etc to correct for the new timezone/dst changes.
Guess nobody was in a hurry for me to test using the other ROMs as I have had no PM's with info as to where I can find the ROMS now that they are no longer on the ftp server here.
I find my copy of Helmi's aku3.5 1.3 and tried it with the 8gb (non-sdhc) card with no luck. I assumed as much. Not quite sure where you heard that it had SDHC support but I guess it doesn't.
I had the PDAVIET 2.0.0.0.7 or whatever the latest incarnation was and that didn't work either. I now have Helmi's WM6 1.1 that I put on last night and that one also doesn't work.
I'm sure we have some developers out there who know palm and ppc hardware who can take a look at the "fix" that was created for the Treo which allows SDHC use. I can "open" the prc file but I don't know enough about what I'm looking at to be helpful.
Not sure why this fix is so slow coming. Perhaps not enough people see the need for 8gb cards. I have a 4gb but I have to continue taking off stuff in order to put anything else on because it's always full.

4GB SD Card

Hello,
I am a new Blue Angel user (bought it used) and so excited to get the best out of it.
Well, I am trying to upgrade the storage, and trying to buy 4GB SD Card...
I have seen a lot of
"Dane Elect 4GB SD Cards" on Ebay and
"Transcend 4GB SD Cards" on Amazon, and
trying to buy either one of them.. but I am wondering,
-Are they both compatible? and..
-Which would be a better choice?
Your replies much appreciated.
Best regards,
J.

I read that 2GB is the max value...
hmm
Yeah, after searching through the forum, found out that BA takes 4GB...

Can you write your experience? have you use a 4GB SD card on Blu Angel?
4gb card
i have a topram 4gb card 150x and all is working ok on my xda 2s with tomtom 6 and mp3s, movies
4GB
I bought a D-Tec 120x 4GB SD Card, had a bit of doubt as I have never heard of D-Tec.
However, I received it today, and so far it works fine! It recognises as 4GB.
To clarify this a bit more for people -
There are two types of SD cards right now:
SD (1.1)
SDHC (2.0 - HC stands for high capacity). A good primer on the changes can be found here: http://www.sandisk.com/sdhc/SDHC.pdf
Basically, what you need to know - any card that is regular 1.1 (8mb -4GB) will work in the BA. Any card that is 2.0/SDHC (4gb -32gb) will NOT work, as 2.0 is NOT backwards compatible.
The problem here, as you may notice, is that some 4GB cards are teh 1.0 version, and some are the 2.0. If you are not careful, you may buy the wrong card, and end up with something you can't use.
Now, it is possible that some SD devices can only address values smaller than 4.0GB. But, assuming the device is FULLY 1.1 compliant, a 4.0 1.1 card should work just great.
Here is an example of the differences -
This is a 1.1 card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820183017
This is a 2.0 card:

SD Card and headphones

I have few questions about BA. First: what is the biggest memory card that can be used in this model? Second: can i use normal (not original) microjack headphones with BA?
P.S. Sorry, should be in accessories, by bad.
To my knowledge, any SD-card will work. That means any real SD up to 2 GB.
Larger cards are either outside the SD-card specs or SDHC, both won't work in a Blue Angel.
Dirk
when i got my universal, there was a 4gb sd (non-hc) with it and i also tried it with the BA for compatibility. it actually worked. so, maybe if you try before you buy, you have the chance to purchase a 4gb sd card, that is compatible with the BA. but with 2gb card(s) you can't go wrong as to my knowledge there are no 2gb sdhc cards or by any other means incompatible cards.
about the headphones there are some threads in the accessories section, that explain, why it won't work, like -=this=- for instance.
thanks for help
EDIT: i've asked some BA users and they said that they are using 4GB non HC cards ... and i found that model but it was rly hard... hope it will work...
I also have a 4gb card for the last two years and it works fine
I am using a regular SD with capacity of 4gb and an adaptor so I can use a regular earphone
cheers mate!
What make are your 4GB sd cards?
