Changing my rom, unlocked/locked? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

Hi guys, i'm fairly new with my o2 XDA exec and was wondering......
1. My device is an o2 XDA exec which comes unlocked, if i change my rom to the latest orange rom will it remain unlocked?
2, I have backed up my XDA to my memory card using SPB Backup, if i run this exe. file from the memory card, will it just reinstall all my apps/configurations to the orange rom?
3, Can anyone tell me where to find the latest orange uk rom which ships on their device, the M5000, and do you think its better than the o2 rom?
Thanks for any advice given

1.yes it will still be unlocked. I've installed the latest imate rom on my exec since it came out and I highly recommend it. I use an Orange pay monthly simcard and have configured gprs and mms on my exec without problems.
2. yes it should do but I would recommend that u backup the pim.vol whic ch contains all your user data like contacts etc then re-install your applcations.
3. definatley recommend the latest imate rom personally but others may suggest the orange.
HTH

Thanks bukwit for your quick reply. These questions may make me sound really dumb but here goes....
1, How do i backup the pim.vol, and what does this do?
2, Which operator is the imate rom for, and where could i find it?

..no problem...
1. Use file explorer to navigate to the root directory of your exec. There u will see the pim.vol file which u can literally copy to an sd card or if your connected to activsync then u can copy this file to your pc by clicking on the explore button on the activsync window itself. This file contains all your contact/calendar information as far as I know. Always worth backing it up unless u synchronise with MS Outlook.
2. The latest imate rom is officially for the imate jasjar which is unlocked to all networks therefore there is NO specific operator that this rom is designed for. I've been using this since it came out with my Orange configurations for MMS and GPRS etc.
The rom is on the ftp site in this directory
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Universal/Shipped_Complete_Updates/
it should be called JASJAR_WWE_13076_164_10900_wwe_ship.exe
I would recommend u first look around the Universal forums and read what people are saying before u jump into it. Its always good to know what to expect when doing something like this.

XDA1 Upgrade PPC 2002 to 2003. Is it possible?

Hi guys
I have an ageing XDA1 running Pocket PC 2002.
Is it possible/easy to upgrade to PPC 2003? Can 2003 be downloaded from the net?
Regards
John
Yes it can, a very nice guy here on the board has a rom kitchen, you can download a rom from there and flash your phone using either the usb method or using a memory card, if you want the normal method be sure to choose this at the bottom of the screen in the kitchen page, the files are normally zipped so you will need to unzip before using, I suggest you use the standard version of wm2003, if you then get ambitious you can cook a rom of your choice.
heres the link
http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org/
Choose wm2003 final 4.01.12 english euro for and choose your autoconfig also.
It is self explanatory really, even if you use the O2 rom your phone will work on other networks as long as its unlocked.
If your phone is locked to a single network you can cook a 2002 rom and include the unlock program from the list, once unlocked you can upgrade to wm2003 using the method described.
Take a good look around the forum before diving in, you may choose to download xdatools and use the sd memory card method of flashing, I find this much easier and much more foolproof.
Good luck with the upgrade.

XDA IIi - Please help me !!

Hello Guys
Firstly, Ive been thru this forum and wiki and have tried various things without major success............Im now getting pretty fed-up.
Ive got an O2 XDA IIi, which Ive unlocked ready for my Orange Contract SIM.
My SIM works for phone and text, but keeps getting "no modem" errors if I try to connect GPRS.
Ive downloaded Resco and can see the Extended Rom folder.
Ive downloaded 3 or 4 different Ext Rom Unlockers - without success (Ive deleted each in turn, installed the next version and soft-reset as I went).
I actually have all of the Orange CAB files, which seem to load onto the PDA if i put them in My Docs and click each in turn - BUT, I still cant connect and all reverts back to O2 if I hard-reset.
So, now I have done a hard-reset and soft reset prior to O2 stuff being auto-installed from Ext Rom (?).
Im getting pretty frustrated at not being able to access the write-protected Ext Rom in order to swap the O2 stuff for my Orange settings.
PLEASE - can anyone give me some step-by-step instructions on what I can do ?
AND - let me know if Im looking in the totally wrong place to start with.
Thanks
Paul
My XDA IIi details are :-
Model No PH10C
Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edtn
Processor Intel PXA272
Speed 520MHz
Flash Size 64MB
Memory 122.04MB
ROM Version 1.10.00 WWE
ROM Date 12/24/04
Radio Version 1.00.00
Protocol Version 1337.39
ExtROM Version - Not Showing as soft-reset during software load
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HimalayaRomkitchen
the last part
unhide your rom and unlock you rom
copy the cab files to the extented rom dir
edit the txt file to include the new added cab files
and remove the entry for the ones you are removing
hide and lock your rom
and hardreset
Thanks Rudegar
Unfortunately, Ive already tried the unlocker tool (and several different versions of them).
Ive just tried again with the one mentioned (it tells me that the software was written for an older version of windows software), and when i select Unhide, the image turns grey but nothing happens.
When I select unlock, i get an error message and "FL_IOCTL_BDTL_HW_PROTECTION"
When I click OK, i get "- A device attached to the system is not functioning."
Clicking OK again, gives me "extrom unlocked" - but it ISNT unlocked.
Any ideas ?
Thanks
Paul
Also,
As I can see the Ext Rom folder, I tried to edit the config.txt file (just to see if it could be edited).
I got a message "No Storage memory available. Tap Cancel, use File Explorer to delete some files and try again. Or, move the note to an alternative storage location. Tap discard to close the document without sving changes"
If I then try to move or delete the config.txt (or any other) file, I get "The media is write protected"
I then installed the Repart_DOC_with_Default tool to make the Ext Rom file larger.
Unfortunately, I get an error "FL_IOCTL_FORMAT_PHYSICAL_DRIVE failed" message and I cannot increase the folder size.
Anyone have any ideas please ?
Thanks
Paul
no if i were you i would try asking or looking in the apline forum because the IIi is alpine and there may be more people there who knows any special things you need to do to unlock alpine devices
Thanks Rudegar
Ive placed a link to this thread in the Alpine section, but as there are so few posts there Im not too hopeful.
Does anyone have any ideas on this please ?
I dont mind paying (or donating) a fair amount in order to get this sorted.
Cheers
Paul
For the mobile that can not unlock by the Extended ROM Unlocker, You have to use the method that DrChair posted here.
You have to find the start point of the ExtROM image which is in Fat16 format, by using Hex Editor and Find "eb fe 90 4d 53 57 49 4e 34 2e 31" (Hex). Copy from this location till 23.2 MB of file size. Open it as virtual disk, then you can do modification.
OMG - I thought things were complicated already.
Surely there must be an easier way to edit Extended Rom on XDA IIi ?
All of the other models appear to have fairly straightforward methods to edit - all except for the XDA IIi
Im afraid all of the link you gave has gone way above my head - it is far too complicated for me.
............
1. First dump your rom to a SD-card, using the well know method.
Which method ? - its not well known to me as i havent found it yet ?
2. Next get the rom to your pc, using ntrw
ntrw ?
3. Using a Hex-editor, copy 2BC019C (HEX) till 3EC019C (HEX) to a file.
ok, i think i will be able to do this.
4. Mount that file as a virtual Harddisk (I use the virtualdisk-plugin for total commander)
??
5. Modify your ExtROM on that Virtualdisk.
ok, i think i know what this means.
6. Umount the Virtualdisk.
??
7. paste the contents of the (modified) file back into the rom-file, at precicly the same position and save it under a different name.
can i do this if the files are write protected ?
8. put the modified rom back onto your SD-card, using ntrw.
? as per 2.
9. Flash your Magician, with the new rom.
Flash ? - and I dont have a Magician, I have an Alpine.
Anyone able to clarify all of this please ??
Paul
Since you are not that technical, I suggest you to forget about it. Or else you may destroy your IIi.
Be understand that architecture of IIi II and Mini are all different. Extended ROM of II is located at DOC (disk on Chip) ROM. But Mini and IIi are not. Mini Extended ROM is located at normal flash memory and not locked READ HERE. I think IIi is the same as Mini. So, wait for some good programmer or hacker to do it. Which may be forever.
You can get some flavour by reading Here. Eventhough you could not read the language, but all the pictures will tell you something.
but it should not be requred to add the stuff to the extented rom to get it to access gprs and mms it's just about putting in the settings
and making sure the right settings are used if there are still
the old settings there
Thanks Guys
I have copied several .cab files onto the PDA for Orange UK Contract settings.
My concerns are that I know the Extended Rom is full of references to O2 and will revert to O2 should I need to hard reset (unless I always keep Orange settings on my MMC).
BUT, Im not convinced that simply clicking onto the Orange .cab files has given me the correct set-up to access GPRS etc - as I cannot access at all.
I keep thinking that somewhere in the darkest depths of the system those original O2 settings are still controlling my PDA.
If someone can confirm for me that by installing and running all of the orange .cab files will indeed set-up the PDA for full Orange access (with no O2 settings running from within the Ext Rom), then I can cope with having to store a copy on my MMC.
Thank very much guys
Paul
if you search the networking forum with the text
GRPS AND <insert your cellphone company>
you are sure to find the right settings plus how to manualy set it up
and when you then sync with activesync you can set it to backup
your settings so if you hardreset you can just restore your backup
and get your settings the way they were
Orange GPRS Settings on 02 xda i
The settings are:-
In New Connections:
SELECT A MODEM = Cellular Line (GPRS)
ACCESS POINT NAME = orangeinternet
USER NAME = Blank
PASSWORD = Blank
DOMAIN = Blank
IN ADVANCED SETTINGS TCP/IP TAB
TICK User server assigned IP address
TICK Use Server Assigned Addresses - SERVERS TAB
You then tap on the G Symbol at the top of the screen and then tap on
Connect GPRS
Two seconds later you are connected.
Thanks Silverhill,
Unfortunately, those setings are already in the PDA and dont connect.
I get a "modem not found" error message.
I can connect with WAP dial-up, but not GPRS.
.....
I have now ordered both O2 AND Orange pre-pay SIM Cards (as they cost less than £10 for the two).
If I do a hard-reset and the O2 SIM doesnt work, I will know the PDA is faulty.
If it works, I can then load the Orange .cab files (after doing a soft-reset during the hard-reset so as not to pre-load O2 from the Ext Rom).
I will then try the Orange Pre-Pay SIM to see if that works.
If it doesnt, it would suggest that the O2 files on the Ext Rom are indeed controlling the settings - even though I stopped them from loading on the reset.
Other than that, I am totally stuffed.
It may be that I have to do a number port of my valuable mobile number and go onto the O2 network.
Cheers
Paul
OK
I received my new Orange PAYG Sim Card, registered it and it worked first time. (I did the same with the new O2 Sim and that worked too.)
Instant GPRS connection - wonderful.
SO, we know that the settings I have on my XDA IIi are correct for Orange and that there isn't any hardware conflict and also that my PDA is not faulty.
A quick phone call to Orange Tech Support AND THEY ASK YOU TO ENTER ALL OF THE SETTINGS AND TELL YOU THE PDA MAY NOT BE COMPATABLE WITH ORANGE !!!!
They really are useless !
I explain (argue) that the PDA must be compatable as the new Orange Sim works fine.
Im told that the only way to check is to go to an Orange Shop and ask them to test my Sim Card in one of their GPRS phones - "which will prove the Sim Card is perfectly OK and the problem is with the PDA" (their words).
I travel 25 miles to a shop and the Sim Card DOES NOT work in their phone.
The assistant offers to call Orange Tech for me to confirm the situation. After being kept on hold for 35 minutes, Orange inform her that my Sim is an older (brown in colour) card and it isnt possible to programme it for newer technologies.
The assistant asks for a new replacement for me and is told that because my PDA is not an Orange supported phone, there is no way for them to run a diagnostic check on it and therefore no way to be 100% sure the Sim is the problem - despite the Orange Sales Assistant confirming it does not work on their GPRS phone.
I am then informed that I can BUY a new Sim Card (blue in colour) for £20 that will work.
At this point I have spent a week trying various settings at home and have stood in the Orange shop for over an hour, so I agree to buy the new card.
Hopefully, it will arrive today or tomorrow and all will be well.
My only "worry" is that I still have all of the O2 settings on my extended rom - so I will keep looking on the forums over the next few months to see if anyone has any better solutions to those currently available.
Thanks everyone for you feedback and assistance.
Paul
buy?
odd when i had my old xda1 stolen i just called my cellphone company
and said it was stolen and they sendt me a new sim card
no charge
same thing had i lost it
Hi Rudegar
Yes - BUY
Ive been an Orange Contract customer for around 9 years (OK, so my monthly bill is only around £3).
They are happy to change my account to Orange World (GPRS enabled) and charge me an extra £4 a month min.
They are told by their own staff that my Sim is actually faulty - the Sim they originally supplied.
They are shown that the XDA IIi is not at fault.
And then they insist on charging me to be able to access the things they are charging me to access.
Like I said, Orange really are a joke.
I have actually placed my mobile phone number (it is pretty special) for sale on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rarely-Availa...429158530QQcategoryZ29781QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
When it sells, I will be moving network and will just go to pre-pay with any bog std number as my call charges and usage are so small.
Thanks
Paul
PS, I hope I wont get told off for plugging my ebay sale.
cant you transfer your nr to your new sim with another company ?
here you can but they take a month to do it guess as a punishment because the thing only takes them 1 sec
SCREAM !!!!!!!
OK, thats out of my system now.
Ive just had the new Orange Sim Card for my contract with them.
Ive tried to register it with them and they REFUSE to pair the new Sim with my XDAIIi
They inform me that because it is a non-Orange phone the insurance would be invalidated - I explained that I do NOT have any insurance to worry about invalidating.
I asked why they were happy to pair a new PAYG Sim Card with the phone a couple of days ago but not my Contract Sim Card.
Their reply was that "by pairing the PAYG Sim and the non-Orange handset, we get new business, but by pairing your contract with a non-Orange phone, we are losing money because you've performed a back-door upgrade".
CAN YOU BELIEVE THESE PEOPLE.
I havent a clue what to do next, as Im getting pretty fed-up of dealing with them.
Paul
lol brand now world where the customer is never right and a bit of a bother
and should count himself lucky that they want to talk to him at all
is at hand
take would take my business elsewhere and never look back
here orange just became more and more unpopular untill they sold their
department to telia and left the country

what does Extention ROM do ?

what does extention ROM do ? how about if i do not install extention and radio rom and install just nk.nbf ?
can anyone write their necessarity ?
thanks
Extended rom contains additional files installed to a normally hidden partition. These files are typically used to configure the "virgin" rom, by including your phone Operator's themes, phone dialler, GPRS settings, various patches and extra apps like PDF reader/Java etc
We normally don't like Extended roms - we normally patch them so we can access them in the normal way, and use them as extra storage for our own files. The Operator's files are normally big and slow things anyway that we don't want to install, so it's free space for us. Generally...
V
Ext ROM installs the softwares added by ur manufacturer or those whose ROM ur installing so it does not matter if u dont want to install dat & can work fine without it , second thing radio is basically needed for all wireless services like wi fi , phone & bluetooth so it is necessary to install and hence if u dont want the specific version of radio to b installed u can leave dat & try ne other version suitable by ur network reception.
many thanks for the explanations. it seems radio and nk files enough for flash my MDA Pro. thanks again.

YES, it is enough to just upgrade those 2, but you have to remember that if you did not erase the contents of the Extension ROM then the old contents of it would still install if you perform a hard reset.
Extended ROM installation can be easily bypassed by performing a soft reset as soon as you see the "TODAY" screen after a hard reset.
But if you really want to erase it, so you don't have to worry about performing a soft reset after each hard reset. Then just install the Extended ROM unlocker by BUZZ and use "Total Commander" to cut and paste the contents of the Extended ROM to your SD Card, perform a hard reset afterwards and all is set.

I am using JWright's Modified IMate ROM that I added a few files from TMobile's. I am also using Orange radio because I find it is best here in NJ under Cingular Wireless. I am not using the official release. Just like you I am wating for the updated version of JWright 1.91.00.
Thanks for the info buddy.
Delete files / programs from ext rom. HOW?????
Hi there. I just downloaded and installed the ext rom unlocker by buzz. I have an Imate Jasjar rom ver: 1.90.96, rom date: 11/01/06 radio: 1.13.00 ext rom ver: 1.95.05 wwe
I would like to know how I can free up the ext rom space on my jj? I really dont need things like the clear vue pdf reader, backgammon, chess, and skype. Someone here said that I can gain upto 10MB free space. Thats like a whole condo in the middle of manhattan
I would be obliged if anyone could provide step by step instructions on how to do it. I'm quite new at this pocket pc editing thing and any help will be great.
Hoping for a quick reply.

"Not Enough Memory" troubleshooting thread

So, some of you have this error, some dont. So lets try and figure it out. Heres what we know.
The problem affects ALL Artemis WM6 ROMS.
Remember, the issue doesnt appear when just using it normally. Its only under certain circumstances. Heres how you re-create the problem.
Run Tomtom, this causes the error90% of the time.
Create a new word document and try to save anywhere.
Heres my setup and what ive tried to fix it.
Device: MDA Compact III
SD Card: 1gb
Ive tried font cache size, system cache, removing the memory card.
Please dont post "I dont get the error" if you havnt tried running tomtom or saving a word document.
Thanks
To add to the problem re-creation, I was trying to copy a directory with around 15 files in it from the internal memory to the storage card, the message just kept popping up for all the duration of the copy process, I stoppped clicking ok eventually. I looked at the free program mempry available then and it was pretty good at around 22mb.
Device: Orbit XDA
SD Card: 1gb
I too have noticed that looking at the free storage space seems to fix it for tomtom (but not word). There is something else wrong with Excel in that the "Save As" is in the wrong place, infact where it is isnt actually save as.
You're right, I haven't noticed this before with excel. I can't remember if it was like this before, was it? It won't be easy figuring this little memory issue out. I hope someone has a trick up their sleeves.
I have the WM6 emulator running on my pc and the excel thing isnt there. Comparing the registry settings on the emulator with my device. I would love to hear if anyone does actually have Word working without issue.
BREAKTHROUGH!
OK. I installed the original Orbit rom and... IT WORKS!!!! So the question is what did bepe and the guys do when they de-branded it? The orbit rom has an Ext-Rom with a load of branded stuff PLUS! some patches. I bet one of these patches fixes the issue!
These custom roms have NO Ext-Rom at all, hence the increased storage space. however in the process of removing the ext rom they have managed to cause these memory errors.
So guys, any chance of a rom close to the Orbit rom but with the English language and Ext rom left in tack?
Great work mate, it is the removal/merging of the extended rom that's causing the problem then. Maybe it's not even a patch in the extended rom, maybe it's the way the extended rom was merged that's causing it. This surely deserves more looking into.
Great breakthrough
Word FIX!
Thanks to pvdhelm for the tip on this one. Attached is a patch to fix the memory issue with word (and only word). To fix it for other apps you need to view the memory in the control panel and click on "Storage Card". The word fix is pernament but the other memory issue it only until you reset your phone.
Absolutely brilliant, so it looks like missing registry entries!! We need to find out what was in the original extended rom then to find out if we're missing anything else. Looks like only me and you here, you should post this fix in the main threads mate.
Cheers and well done.
I have a copy of the rom, tried isntalling it all but to no avail. It looks like on boot up the system thinks it has a different ammount of ram due to the ext rom being merged. By displaying the ammount of storage it realises it has a different ammount and fixes it. Until the next reboot. So if anyone knows what changes when you view the storage that may be fixing it I would love to know.
Or if somone can make a rom with the ext rom still in place.
EDIT: Heres one just for the MDA Compact III without WiFi users. It applys the Word memory errror fix but also fixes the Comm Manager issue and does so just for the MDA as it removes WiFi from the list.
Maybe this is a clue for you all. I have never had these errors, ands I use Tomtom daily and have tested word for you again with no fault.
The difference? Well I upgraded to WM6.0 the original way before USPL patch and flashed the OS only. I'm assuming you with problems used the ROM installer method. Am I right with my assumption? If so that should narrow down the culprit.
I used Bepes original WM6 WWE OS only upgrade, therefore the Ext ROM on my device is still the old T-Mobile WM5 one and was simply not allowed to run. So it can't be right to assume there is something missing from an EXT ROM patch.
It's most certainly the extended rom being merged then, there's nothing else to it.
gajet, can you give me the exact steps you took. I went from the T-Mobile rom to Black and blue then to the others. I uses USPL first though.
Can you give me a quick set of steps you took i.e Original T-Mobile rom, then ran USPL, then updated to Bepes.
Also, if you used bepe's can you also tell me which rom update util you used? as the one ive tried has errors at the end.
Thanks

VERY interesting reading!
If you move this thread, please drop a link on here for us, thanks. The first one to crack this problem will be worshipped from afar I am sure!!
I think it could be an order of upgrade issue, heres the latest.
1. Downgraded to T-Mobile WM5 rom
2. Ran USPL
3. Upgraded to Bepe WM6 using the EXE version
The word issue is no longer there but the out of memory in Tomtom is. Also no ext rom.
It would be good to know from others and gajet what steps they took and which files they uses to do it. Especially as gajet still has his extended rom.
I've tried:
official t-mobile wm5 to german wm6 to bepe uspl &
official t-mobile wm5 to bepe uspl
Both times I have had the error with tomtom but no problems with word.
Both times temp fix (looking at storage) worked (sorry about font cache red herring - thought I was onto something there).
Just tied chi-tai extended battery plugin with the storage showing on the homepage (as a way to force system to get correct memory) but no joy.
I have htc touch com manager and phone skin but not the home plugin.
Cheers
Matt
I think Ive cracked it. Just doing some final testing but watch out for a new "How to" thread.
go Danny go.
Look forward to seeing it.
Will test and report back once you've posted.
Cheers
Matt
Sadly the original thread was edited to reflect the OS update was repackaged but eddie2k still goes on the reexplain the process in this thread.
eddie2k said:
then use winrar to unpack the (bepe) wm6 wwe rom in this page (written in red). flashed using bootloader method.
after u get german rom installed , run ARTE os flash utility from xda ftp (log in properly) link don't work if not logon properly..
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Artemis/arte.zip unpack
copy os.nb from first folder (bepe) wwe rom to arte folder and rename os.nb to windows.nb then run UpgradeRom.bat
hard reset, soft reset done.
Click to collapse
Now I didn't bother installing the german O2 release as my MDACIII was CID locked, so I just used ARTE package with Bepes WM6 .nb renamed and flashed the OS only, then after hard resetting, at the point of about to load EXT ROM soft reset.
This thread was also the guide although you could skip the process of extracting the .os from a ROM package as Bepe originally provided us with the raw windows.nb file.
Thanks gajet, Ive just posted the steps. Your post was deffinatly the key. Once I saw you still had your ext rom I knew we could do it.

Restore O2 EXTRom

Sorry if this has been answered somewhere else, but...
Before I flashed the new AWESOME PDAVIET ROM FOR HTC ARTEMIS ( Black&Blue), I thought I was being a smarty pants and made a backup via aWizard of the EXTRom (and all others of course).
Now, how do I restore that O2 EXTRom back on there? aWizard doesn't seem to have that option on there?
Thsanks in advance for not flaming a noob.
I tried to use OliPro's patcher (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297085&highlight=extrompatcher)
When I removed the Storage Card another Storage Card folder appeared (coz I selected to store my attachments on the storage card. I assumed this was the EXTRom, which it wasn't.
I also tried using the Registry (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Artemis_Unhide_Extrom)
All I reall need is Windows\O2_Operator_Settings.exe from my backup, how do I extract files from my earlier backup nba file?
If its just the o2 settings you need have a look at this topic
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=313958
Thanks. I was going about it all wrong. I just checked O2's website and found the settings I needed.
I still want to fix up the EXTRom and extract those two files from my original backup. I will wait for B&B v3, hopefully with a vanilla version and instructions on customising the EXTRom the way I want it.
