SPAM messages... - About xda-developers.com

We removed a large number of Private Message spam messages yesterday. So if you got an e-mail announcing a PM and no PM was there when you logged in, this is ok.
Damn spammers...
EDIT MDAIIIUser
Removed the Global Announcement as the Info is now old 10/05/2006

Many thanks! Your hard work is much apreciated.
Warm regards,
Neil.

It has been a problem on a lot of forums recently, as it seems there is now code that can integrate with the board and autosend to a selection from the members list.
With XMB the latest version has code to prevent this - so i would guess there is also a version for phpBB.
If it is from a unique IP there is no harm in blocking it as a quick temporary fix.

Got this one the other day in my PM box...

If you read his post subject, it says, "Got this one the other day in my PM box..." This implies that he is willing to notify us of this spam PM occurence.

Ah ha, please accept my sincere apologies! I was all in a bind about spam and clearly not thinking properly. Again, i retract my comments 100% and have edited out my previous post.

Neil.

Help wanted: the FAQ system

The wiki ( http://wiki.xda-developers.com ) contains a tiny start of what could become a very nice FAQ. I do not have time over the next weeks to expand what's there, and appeal to any and all with some time on their hands to please see if they can add structure, or just questions and their answers. Feel free to change it until it's good, that's what wikis are for.
Nice post peter
Question for you
How would you feel if you had spent over 2 months building a wiki for the blueangel, posting the files to the ftp site, to find that they got deleted on the 16 .
Pm 2 admins, one picking up the pm but not repliying, the orher not picking up the pm.
Rebuilding the trashed ftp site, re linking the wiki links, Posting to the ftp non public thread, reading that it will happen soon, watching the ftp site getting trashed again (today) and then reading your reqest?
Ps you have a pm from me datedted 16 march, feel like picking it up?
Why this beautifull FAQ (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blueangel) is not visible for ordinary people? I found it by accident.
But it is!
Top of screen to the right is the link wiki.xda-developers.com
On that page under HTC Device you will find Blueangel
The Blueangel Link gets you to that page
Never thought that behind these WiKi activities this FAQ is hidden - put another link under this WiKi.XDA-devloppers.com link with something like "How Blue Angel works" or "Blue Angel FAQ" or "Knowledgebase". So a person who visits for the first time immediatly sees this fine product of hard labor.
What happen to the Magician section ? Are we being ignore ???
Well, I really love your job, however, my device is being left out !!
Wiki like the forum is user driven. In short if no user feels the need or want to update wiki then it just does not happen.
You dont need to be a moderator to add pages in wiki, you dont even need to be good in english for somebody down the line will add or correct your page.
I have to say - that's a real shame.
There's a lot of information requested on these forums that has been requested before - but often it's buried deep in a confusing thread (most recently the splash image tweaks for the HTC Wizard - I have no idea what util tweaks what splash).
I just created a Wiki page (search for my username, I guess - it's not really linked from anything much yet), and I plan to create more related to the Wizard as time becomes available.
Wikis are inherently much better at giving concise information than an open-discussion forum... wish people would use it.
Help with the SiteManagement Project
Please see the following forum topic to see how you can further help with the FAQ Wiki Project:

We need as much help as possible to create a sustainable platform in order to further create a workable and informative website, so please check out this topic and see what you can do to help!
Hi guys, is it possible to have access to google-analytics results? Since we need to know for what the users are looking for - the most common search, how they act in site (in wiki! and so on)
Then we can make THE wiki.
Posting to the ftp non public thread, reading that it will happen soon

Outside Links

I have only been a member here for a short time; however, I have found this site to be a very useful resource. As such, I have researched further into a particular topic and have written a blog post pertaining to my discoveries. However, I don't seem to be permitted to include "outside links" in my post. How long am I considered to be a 'new member' and how am I 'verified'?
If you continue to use the site and post properly, you will be "verified." This process happens automatically once you reach a certain number of posts. We had to put this restriction in place recently because we were being inundated with spam.
hmmm
I understand.
can u pls tell me how many number of posts to be made for the verification process.
Welcome to forums
The magic number is 8
But more important than that number is that you make good use of your account

Had problems submitting my first post.

Hello,
I had some problems submitting my first post to this forum. I always got this error message:
1.To prevent spam to the forums, new users are not permitted to post outside links in their messages. All new user accounts will be verified by moderators before this restriction is removed.
... and wondered what went wrong. I had no outside links in my posting and decided to wait for some time, maybe it was a temporary problem with the forum. After then I tried to post my message again. Same error.
After some brain work I noticed my mistake:
in my nickname I have a (at). Maybe the rule set for the e-mail-filter is a bit restrictive, so it wrongly validates every (at) in the posting.
Should be only taken as an advice to maybe adjust the filtering or at least the error message a bit.
best regards

Maybe trying to find clever ways to put sh*t as your user name, wasn't as clever as you thought ?
Hello, I have a problem in my first Thread. I would send a new ROM for the raphael, but it gives me this error "To prevent spam to the forums, new users are not permitted to post outside links in their messages. All new user accounts will be verified by moderators before this restriction is removed."
how can I do?
thanks for all answers.

I would do what the warning/restriction says and contact a moderator.

I wouldn't
There's nothing we can do. The restriction is on posting links and images. It automatically lifts after the member posts enough times.
It was added to prevent spam bots and it has worked wonders.

So...... it was a lie? False advertising I say, even if the product is the ability to post links.

Contact us by all means, but we will tell you we can't help .
I have asked if this can be re-worded at some point in the future.

You will be dearly missed. New members are allowed to post questions...just not links without mod approval. Have fun at your new site.
I'm having the same issue. I get the following message, which is different from the one above:
"To prevent spam to the forums, ALL new users are not permitted to post outside links in their messages. After approximately eight posts, you will be able to post outside links. Thanks for understanding!"
But I do not have any links in my message.
What are the characters the forum SW parses as links?

Images also count as part of the check, or anything starting http:// (IIRC).
If you are still having problems, try uploading the BB Code to pastebin (or similar).

I believe it can also detect links as being strings separated by at least one dot, with a slash "/" present...
But I think Dave might be right about the http part. Try a basic post, removing anything other than plain text, then add the suspected parts in via edit, and see what it is rejecting.
I think I found the issue. I didn't have any "http", slashes, or images.
I was trying to post the handset info from my HTC Hero, which contains all manner of random characters, including the hash sign. I'm thinking it was that which was marked as spam.
Three posts down, 5 to go before I can start making sense.
Thanks for the assist.

[Service][Grammar/Spelling] Need a proofreader?

Hello, XDA!
Today I have a new service that doesn't appear to have been offered before as a thread, and that is a free spelling and grammar proofreader!
Are you coming out with a new thread that you want to look really neat and tidy, but don't have the best spelling and/or grammar skills (perhaps English isn't your first language)? Then I have the solution for you! For absolutely free, you can PM me your thread's OP that you've already typed out as best you can, and I will read through it and correct any grammar and/or spelling mistakes that I find. Then, I will send the post back to you via PM for you to copy-and-paste into your thread's OP.
The only things I request of you all are:
1. When you make a request, please make a post in this thread saying that you made that request for use in request #2 below;
2. That if you see someone else has already made a request, please wait on your request until I make a post that I've completed that person's text correction;
3. And that if you like the idea or my work, leave some positive feedback in this thread.
Thanks for abiding by my requests!
Regards,
Nookie

Nice idea!
Alright, guys - I'm ready for a request now!
Oh, yeah, and if you think this thread is worthy of being on the portal, please do recommend it to a portal administrator/news writer like @GermainZ, @willverduzco or @eagleeyetom. If I can get this on the portal, it'll really take off, I think! EDIT - Talked to @eagleeyetom, he said that it's not going on the portal because it's not tech-related. Oh, well. :|
Bump-er car (@vasconqs ).
Anybody interested in this?
What an inspiring initiative Good luck and thanks for your good will!
However I doubt that people with a bad english would come on XDA to start a thread that requires a correction from an english speaker.

First post editable by various users?

Guys, i am a frequent poster at a LeTV s1/X600 phone thread. It would be great if the first post was updated frequently about new information/FAQS/updates/news ROMs, important information, etc. However the OP user, has the account disabled. It's a mess that important information is spread across several pages*, not usefull for people that needs info (sometimes urgent) and not for the guys doing the answering, we don't mind answering, but it would be better for everyone if the important information was in one place.
Now, sure i could open a new thread, but somewhere in the future i will sell this phone and maybe not interested in updating the info on the first post. So, is there a way to have a post editable by more than 1 user so when someone leaves, others could continue updating?
*- This is indeed a typical problem of forums.

Sorry, this isn't really possible. The only way would be to give you the OP. And if you sell the phone and someone offers to take over, they could get the OP.

Ok, this seems reasonable. In case i open a new thread, but after a while i'm no longer interested maintaining the first post i could pass to other user. How could this be done? Is there a way to actually change the user for the first post?
Other way maybe... I could open a new user account and share it, this would be ok too, right?

To have the first post ownership changed, just hit report on the opening post and request the change. If it's someone else's thread, they would need to initiate the change. You can pm a Moderator from your section as well.
And no, it's against XDA rules to create more than one account. Also, multiple persons accessing an account is never a good idea.

All right then. Maybe it's easier to start a new thread. We just want to make a informative (FAQs, updates, tutorials, etc) opening post. BTW, the thread is this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/letv-one-x600-s1-hands-antutu-camera-t3130033
As you can see, the OP has the account disabled. But ok, we'll probably open a new thread.
Thanks for the attention guys.

Given the circumstances in which he was banned, I think in this case it would be best to start anew thread. Once you do, let me know and I can close the old one with a link to your new one.
