(requests) From the Users to the Mods & Admins - About xda-developers.com

Hi all
A few of us Moderators have been getting PM's that in my case have not been dealt with due to the fact I am not always on the board.
All of us do this for free and in our spare time, and over time we move on, get new toys, or even go back to a real life without a keyboard under our fingers.
Please try to understand that some of us are Bias (I admit to it I have a BA and am not intrested in many of the other sections).
Thus I for one do not read all posts and all sections, I feel this is true for others, like I said I feel this.
We all however try to check the trash and keep the news clean.
For this reason we need a form of communication that is not based on a person but directed to a group and in this case its the Moderators and Admins.
It is with that motivation in mind that I have opened this thread and made it sticky in the hope that you are able to post issues that you think that at least one of us should deal with.
Please note that this board does not tolerate cracks, serials, pirated versions or the posting of software that should have been aquired by legal means and we will remove (delete) them when found. Please help us keep this site clean by posting links of that sort in this tread as well as telling us if you have found anything on the ftp site.
Please use this thread, use and edit the wiki and remember this board would not be as great as it is without YOU.
Thanks for your support.
MDAIIIUser

Thanks MDAIIIUser.
And remember, mods aren't Gods, despite us all being flaxen hair'd Adoni.
We can't create new Forums, change the Welcome page or Index page, or supply you with new flags or avatars. But ask anyway, it helps us put pressure on the Admis, who are the true Smooth Operators of this board.
V

Thanks guys!
Hi Guys,
Thanks for postings this.
We (admins) are behind you (though we also aren't gods )
Greetz,
Flar

redirection from www.xda-developers.com still pointed to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/front_page.php
link above is not valid anymore
I guess, it should be pointed to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php
nothing major, just easier that way

Think that is correct that is the main page, the forum is a sub element which you can get to from the main page. If you just want the forum then bookmark it.
Link above worked for me

[req] mobile forum theme
Let me first thank you for moving to a much better forum application than phpBB.
I hope one day we can have access to a mobile friendly theme from owr phone. If implemented, I would also like to request that the theme option be stored in cookies rather in the database so we wouldn't have to enter User CP and change the theme every time we log in from our mobile or desktop.
thanks!

Charmer Wiki locked, someone have a check on that please. Thanks

checked it,
opened, edit, saved and removed edit fine

Try on another different user account? Look at my screen shot. The Page-Info gives me the LOCKED status. And, I only see the View-Source not the normal Edit button. Something wrong?

Is it possible to regain the option: view your posts? I liked it but can't find it now anymore.

go User CP -> Find all your posts.

I didn't notice, thanks!

Somebody is having fun with the locking of pages!
Thanks (unlocked now)

Just wondering, with the recent spamfest that seems to be taking place is there any pattern developing in the IPs used that would allow an IP ban to be placed? or are they using anon proxies? I know from my own experience as an admin on another forum they can be a pain, but they really seem to be targetting this place.... A friend of mine is a developer for vb and if there is anything that could be of use I can ask him if he would be able to create a plugin to help you block it.
In many ways this is one of the best sites I have seen (apart from the one I am an admin on of course, we all take pride in the sites we run heh) and I would like to assist in any way to stop any of the users being taken in by spammers like that. (yes, I know most of the users here are smart enough not to fall for it lol) Certainly it's one of the most informative on the HTC devices.

I don't see Cingular in the drop-down list for profiles.... found this a bit odd....

Hi Crash Override,
We were already working on this, we will add some ip bans today.
Thanks for you suggestions and compliments though

Seems I got overlooked....
It's bugging me that I have to show AT&T as my carrier, as apparently carrier isn't an optional field, and Cingular isn't available in the drop down menu....

yeah, I'd be ashamed to show AT&T as my carrier also!!!

Banner on main forum page

Seriously! Who is the brainiac behind this? I'd like to know... Main forum page has nice new banner on top. GREAT! but when you have drop down boxes like SEARCH, than UNFOLD you do not COVER them with a banner!
Doesn't anyone TEST stuff when they put it on the site? Do you just copy paste a banner URL and job is done?
Just block them. I block as many adds as I can because my bandwidth sux. The page still comes up good afterwards.
why not just have the banner above the menu bar? is it that hard?
I don't want to block banners, it's a flash banner anyway. I don't even mind one banner. What I do mind is the fact that whoever put this there is clearly not doing their job right. FIX IT!
I love how I can post a complaint here but no mods a. answer, b. do anything about it. Great job, just great.

I think it's a problem on your end because my menus and such (Quick Links and Search) open up OVER the banner, not under it... What browser are you using? I'm using Internet Explorer 7 on Windows Vista.
Here on Server 2003 and FF some banners are under, some are over.
Indeed. There doesn't seem to be a good responsive way to discuss forum problems.
Would be nice to get this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=290327
fixed also.
I'm sure the people that run this site have better things to do then fix compatibility issues with banners and advertisments. To tell you the truth I used to run a forum like this. It's not an issue of the code being wrong it's how it's interpreted by your browser. I just installed FireFox to see, and sure enough the menus show up UNDER the banner. That's not the site's fault, that's the browser's fault for rendering it wrong. If it works fine in another browser then use that. Sometimes there is a middle ground, but unfortunatly vBulletin only offers certain types of code and has constraints. Also I'm sure no one wants to pay money to switch to phpbb or invision powerboard. These board/forums softwares have issues to themselves.
However, I agree about the page layout there in ivorh's post, that can be fixed by some simple code changes, but it's not that big of a deal. The PDA list view could be fixed as well I suppose. Meh. I come here to get information, not spending 10 hours wondering why the banners aren't working along with the menus lol. I'm not saying you don't have valid points, but I think you need something better to get fustrated about.
there's a thread on the moderators forum about both issues, but the admins are busy with other things now... we'll try to get things fixed, just have a bit of patience

Maybe if you had posted respectfully, someone might have responded.
As Pof said, the moderators are pulling their own hair out (a la Britney) about it on the Moderators' forum, but the admins have to get it fixed, not the worthless underling Mods.
Frankly, I never noticed the problem - I use an ad blocker by default. I probably shouldn't recommend that solution, but it's better then nothing.

BRLE Vogue Kitchen AKU.0.7.0 [001]

This is my second attempt at making a Vogue Kitchen. The first was released on HowardForums for cricKet users.
This kitchen is based off of XIP Ported CE OS 5.2.1933 Build 18533.0.7.0. It can be used to build ROMs for the following carriers: Alltel, cricKet, Sprint, Generic.
I tried to find a happy medium for the pagepool and set it at 12MB. You can change the pagepool before you flash if you'd like. Raising the pagepool to say 16MB would increase the speed of the phone but would cause you to have less program memory. Just use the tool included in the RUU folder.
What is included:
Upgrade drivers and XIP to 1.17 ship rom
Upgrade base to CE OS 5.2.1933 Build 18533.0.7.0
Adobe Flash Player 7

Some big THANK YOUs to:
- Amoamare for his work on the Apache's cricKet extended ROM and for working to get cricKet customizations added to the Apache kitchen
- DogGuy at PPCGeeks for his work on the 6800 kitchen and answering my questions as I worked on the Vogue Kitchen based on 1.12.651.1 Sprint ROM
- Everyone DogGuy thanked for helping him get his kitchen up and running
- Sfaure at PPCGeeks for his work on the Bluetooth stack
- dcd1182 at xda-developers for his excellent work on XIP Porting of the updated CE OS and bearing with all my questions
- to0 at HowardForums for his excellent input/support and work on the serial program and his two ROMs
- jammis, berry_lthird, and jimska78 at HowardForums for helping me test the Vogue ROMs/Kitchen when I didn’t even own a Vogue which gave me a much better overall understanding of ROM/Kitchen development
-my wife's poor phone and all the abuse it took (i kept "borrowing" it from her at night)
-everyone else on these forums for your input and support
DISCLAIMER: As with any other custom ROM/Kitchen, there is a risk of damaging your device. I offer no warranties in the event this happens. Please do realize, however, that there haven't been any permanent casualties reported. So far, the worst that has been reported is getting stuck in bootloader mode (multi-color screen). If this happens to you, don't freak out. Head over to PPCGeeks, and read this: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=9229. If you're unable to get past a specific splash screen, you may need to manually put your device into bootloader mode and install a different ROM.
A Stock Sprint Ship ROM can be found here:
ftp://xda:[email protected]_WWE_1.12.651.1_2.13.00_SPC_NV133_Ship.exe
Your phone will need to be unlocked using the Vogue Unlocker by ImCoKeMaN of PPCGeeks. This will allow you to flash custom ROMs. Please don't PM me asking how to use this. If you don't know, you probably shouldn't be doing this.
ftp://ppcgeeks:[email protected]/Vogue/Users/ImCoKeMaN/Vogue_unlocker.exe
Now that that's out of the way... here's the link; you'll need WinRAR:
ftp://xda:[email protected]/BRLE_Vogue_Kitchen_AKU_0_7_0_01212008.zip
IMPORTANT INSTALLATION NOTE: You will be prompted for a serial once you install and boot into any ROM made from this kitchen. You will not be able to do anything without a serial (aside from flash a new ROM).
Here's how the serial process works: You'll be shown a code when you first boot. Send that code to the email displayed on your phone screen and I'll send you a corresponding serial to unlock the ROM.
I will give out one free serial per ROM per username on HowardForums, XDA-dev, or PPCGeeks. This is more a test of something to0 and I have been playing with rather than anything for profit as well as preventing people from selling our work. In order to obtain a serial, you must have at least 15 posts, with the majority of them being at least a little bit constructive. Serials will not change as long as you keep the same phone number so write them down for future use.
I seem to have broken the ##3424 code in some aspects of this build but not for all carriers. I will work on it and hopefully post an update in a couple days. In the meantime, make sure you change your SPC and configure your MDN MIN and all other EPST settings before flashing if you haven't done so already. ##778 and all other codes work.
I will be around if you need a code. PLEASE NO PMs. Only email the address displayed on your phone screen or use the contact info below. Or you can contact to0 (aka mooingrhinocero in the cricKet section of HowardForums for a Vogue code)
AIM: mrfluffball
AIM: to0g
Hofo: mooingrhinocero
If you choose a carrier autorun, your serial may try to run at the same time. Don't worry about it. Just let your autorun finish and it will auto soft-reset for you. If you don't have an autorun, just tap the "OK" and the device will reset.
Make sure to use ReadMe.pdf and Enjoy Flashing with the Vogue Kitchen!! If you change your pagepool, please leave feedback in a couple days so we can compare results. Amoamare, I'd love to include your cricKet theme if it's finished and you are willing to share. Please let me know. dcd1182 and sd_matto, if you have any suggestions or feedback I would be grateful for them. Please post any bugs and if you have an OEM you would like me to test and include in the next build please let me know. I will be working on cleaning up the Sprint and Alltel junk this week and at some point creating support for Bell and Telus ROMs. If anyone who is well versed in ROM building wishes to assist me, I would welcome the help.
I can't wait for this!!!
Verizon just released their phone with GPS... with that included this would be a perfect ROM ( already is )
Thanks!!

I appreciate all the work that you guys put into these ROMs but I feel compelled to point out that, at the time of my post, you only have 14 posts on this forum. To me that is a bit hypocritical. True, it is your ROM and therefore your rules, but that just does not jive with me.
Though I only have 4 measly posts (until this one) I think that you shouldn't have to have a minimum post amount just to try a kitchen. But again, it is your work, so you get to make the rules...
And I would be frustrated more if I wanted to try your work out. But I am happy with my Touch modded the way it is, so I gues sI am just speaking out for other people who are in a similar post position as me but did want to try out your kitchen.

I can appreciate where you are coming from. I tend to post more at Howard Forums and occasionally PPCGeeks. Like I said in the first post, the serial thing is more a test than anything else. I'm not looking to make a profit off of it. If you have very few posts but think you are a legitimate contributor to the forums and want to try my kitchen then by all means email me or catch me on AIM and let's get you a serial. This is mainly geared to weed out the people who were selling ROMs other people had made and posted over at Howard Forums. dcd1182 does this out of enjoyment as do I. I just don't think its fair (not to mention copyright issues) for someone to go out selling beta material.
Thanks for including Bell/Telus config in your kitchen?
It will allow us to customise our "own".

exactly, how come someone with only 15 posts can copy a senior members (with over 300 posts) work and take credit for it
its not like that, my kitchen uses the great work of other people and if i didnt want others using my stuff i wouldnt post it. i just dont think the thanks section here is exactly proportionate.

I'm not looking to steal anyone's work. DCD did an excellent job porting. That was something I didn't even know how to do three weeks ago and am just beginning to understand.
But that being said, I've given credit numerous times through this thread for his work. Maybe you guys can break apart OEMs and separate out the parts of a ROM in a matter of hours but I know how much time I took (since December 1, 2007 when I did a very shabby cricKet kitchen COMPLETELY BY MYSELF based on 1.12.651.1) to learn rather than just try to leech.

I personally broke down the OEM folders and a few of the SYS folders in this ROM. I went through and made numerous registry changes, wrote provxml files, and a few OEMs. Not to mention the hours/weeks I spent testing the ROMs and correcting errors and duplicate files. To say that I've completely stolen someone's work is unfair. If you feel more credit is due to you or to DCD then by all means take it. I sure appreciate your input, support, and feedback and respect your advice a great deal. Probably more than you realize. This is a hobby for me. I just figured others could enjoy it even if it's not as great a release as DCD's final release will be. I'm not looking for it to be. He provided a base and I'm learning and taking on the challenge of knowing the in's and out's of XIP Porting so I can do it myself in the future. But if you're going to complain of not giving credit where its due then please at least respect the time I've put into it.
I'm proud of the small role I've played in this kitchen especially the personal knowledge I gained but DCD if you'd rather I pull this kitchen down, I'll gladly do it. I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes. Just trying to give back what little I can/have learned with help to/from everyone in these online phone forum communities. Please don't take this the wrong way.

dcd,
This is exactly why I didn't take much of a look at this kitchen. It just seemed like something wasn't quite on the level here. I was worried about using anything that that didn't have your stamp of approval. Then when I saw a post in your ROM thread annoucing the kitchen I really got concerned.

I'm not even going to waste my time saying a whole lot except that you and I both know all the times I've helped you out before when you PMed so please don't sit there and unnecessarily flame me. If you don't like the thread and it "concerns" you then move on and don't use it. Wait for his release if it makes you more comfortable. But don't go just to say something is not on level when you haven't even used it much less read all the thank you's I made in the ReadMe talking about BUILDING UPON OTHER'S WORK.
blee,
I may have distorted what I was saying. First, I don't want to take credit from what you have done. You obviously know way more about ROM development than what I do. It is also obvious that you spent much time working on this kitchen. For that I commend you.
This is just kind of a touchy thing. You get into an issue of intellectual content intrusion. Unfortunity you kind of walk a fine line. I have seen this happen before in other forums where good people leave the forum because of stupid arguments. I would much rather see you two work together and share the brain trust as opposed to losing either one of your developments. It appears to me that we lack large levels of cooperation because of what ever reason. It would great to see big group colabratives. I bet we could really so some major developments with talented people who contribute to this site.
So, in closing my comments made earlier were only to say from looking from the outside in, I knew we were running into a situation where two knowledgable people were not going to see eye to eye. I honestly don't know either one of you, but I hope both of you will be open enough to discuss this, work together, and continue to be contributing members of this community.
Good luck to all!

Yes I agree blee has help me on more than one occasion. My comments were not thought out before typing in my first post. My only concern is for the good of the forum. I am removing my original post as it was typed unfairly. I really just want everyone who comes to this forum to continue to grow from eachothers experiences and findings. I have always thought that's the point of the forum in the first place is to share knowledge. So blee, I apologize to you for over reacting or reacting at all. It's really none of my business.
I hope all contributors keep up their great work in this forum so dopes like me can continue to learn.
yeh i think everyone needs to relax a little its jsut a kitchen/ROM its not life or death here. Its great we have a kitchen and if DCD wants to release his own and do different things cool, we have 2 choices! Its all for the good of the community. As long as no ones making money off eachother than i think everyone needs to take a chill and relax IMO
and i think the serial from the developer is a great idea be it a little bit of a pain (maybe one day can be an automated email or such). But thats what you have to do when theres dishonest people in the world who want to make a buck off your work. I think its a good idea to explore to keep it from being sold on ebay by scammers.
No hard feelings. I stand by my post. If dcd wishes that I remove the kitchen from this forum then I will do so. If I don't hear anything then please let's get this thread back on track so we can make it better as a community. I need your help and feedback which doesn't happen unless you actually try the ROMs.
One thing that's already been mentioned is that AL_Bkgd.brn is in each of the following three folders. If you select a home plugin and the action screen together you will have a conflict running BuildOS.
OEM_brle_Cube_Icons_Blue
OEM_brle_Cube_Icons_Yellow
OEM_HTC_Action_Screen
This is resolved by:
Just manually delete that file from one of the folders either Blue/Screen or Yellow/Screen before you flash or delete it from all three and place it in OEMAPPS. I'll move it back to the OEMAPPS folder for next time.

I will tell you right now why there is not that much cooperation here... The Touch is not a cheap phone in any sense and not many people are willing to accept the risks when it comes to flashing a custom ROM to their device so there goes your testers and there goes your potential users.
On another Note...
You know it's almost kinda funny how a bunch of grown men and women are arguing over this. I know a lot of work goes into creating a kitchen and to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't know the first thing about it but to argue over this is pointless, just work together and make an even better kitchen for EVERYONE to use.
So what if some jackass is trying to sell custom ROMs that they made using this kitchen... That's ignorant and disrespectful to the author in many ways but it is their business. They're going to do what they're going to do one way or another so why make the honest people have to pay for the idiots doing this? Right now you have it set up so that you need a serial just to use the ROM they build using your kitchen. As a veteran, I can tell you that this is almost like basic training... Everybody is getting punished because of a couple, or just one, idiot doing something stupid.
I spent A LONG TIME over in the Wizard forum here on Xda-Developers and once I used a kitchen to build my own ROM, I've never had to wait for a reply to an email I had no other choice but to send to use MY custom work just because I used someone else's as a base to start. I take no credit for anything you have done but why should I be penalized because I want to try your work? And to make it even worse... It sometimes takes several attempts to get a custom ROM to be just the way you want it and if I have to pay for each serial I need after the first one, there's only one other ROM I will be flashing and that is the original OEM ROM from Sprint and HTC. I work 80 hours a week and now I can't even do the one thing I enjoy doing in my free time because some guy thinks its a cool idea to pick and choose who gets to use his kitchen and who doesn't using a serial number... Ridiculous...
Last time I checked, the OEM ROM is free... The unlocker is free... There has never been a serial for anything I have ever flashed or used unless it was SHAREWARE and I DAMN sure will not pay for a custom OS when I can use the one provided on my phone for free.
I think you are in over your head trying to restrict usage of this kitchen to only people approved by yourself. If you are going to post this here and make it public, remove the restrictions so people can use it as they please and start posting custom ROMs to the forum. Yes there are going to be dishonest people who use your kitchen to try to make a few dollars but then again I have seen that over in the Wizard forum as well and not one of the people over there who have ever created a kitchen have done this... If you are not going to make this public and free to 100% of the people here who might want to use it, then you should take it down and request the thread be removed because that is not how things are done in this forum. Just look around... You'll see... Just look at your feedback to this thread and that should be enough...
Having said that, Have a nice day.
Dan.
But whatever... It's your work.

nah, i think my point was completely missed, and i removed my comment because i knew it would just provoke a stupid argument. theres really no reason why i would want you to remove a working kitchen you provided the vogue community.

Blee, I have to agree with RainFreak... The minimum post thing is not in the spirit of cooperation. I TOTALLY agree with you about someone taking your work and selling it! Those guys should be ferreted out and banned. Most of the good people on this site and others are here to collaborate and learn. Placing artificial hoops to jump through is counter-productive to the spirit of this forum...
With tremendous respect, but I thought you would like to know.

Fundamental Search Issues?

Is there any reason why neither a keyword or tag search for "[ROM]" (without quotes) yields zero results?
If I want to find a list of all [ROM] titled/tagged threads to look at the range of ROM's available; what is the best way to go about it?
Am I being a noob or is there a fundamental search flaw?
Well...
I can think in 3 search criteria:
1. Go to the upgrading section of your device
2. use Wiki to find all cooked and shiped ROM´s
3. Use the XDA fttp

A few months back I actually dug through the advanced search code in vBulletin (trust me, it's terrible code). I may be mistaken, but I believe that it doesn't allow keywords of 3 or less letters unless there's extra parameters (like boolean operators and more keywords). Don't hold me on that, I'd have to look again to be sure.
One of these days if I remember, I'll go hunting through the code again to confirm that and update the wiki page I wrote (link is in my signature) with the answer to this.
mikechannon said:
Indeed words of less than 4 letters will not search. BUT if you click on advanced searh then choose search using Google at the top, it will search for 3 letter words.
Or you could use this:
Search XDA-Devs Forums or Wiki

The problem with using google in this case is that it's not context aware of the forum threads. I think he's looking to see a large list of the different roms. With google, he's going to get search results including several different pages per rom and no way to sort the results. It would be faster to just click next through each page of the rom dev forum for the selected phone...which is almost as good as getting the intended search results from searching for [ROM]....
It makes me wonder how hard it would be to patch the issue in vBulletin and get better search results than Google can produce.

If everybody can do the same thing as google did, google will not be google, I mean, the #1 internet company in the world.
I am just wondering that can anybody produce a code like the search link on this page.[Edit: I want to add several more sites as searching range to that one, can you figure it out?]

I wasn't talking about producing a better search engine, only fixing the known bugs. Things like the incorrect handling of sorting by relevancy (as detailed in the wiki page I wrote), the 4+ letter requirement on search terms, and maybe even giving it grouping capability. The first two aren't even hard to change, though the 4+ letter requirement is performance based, so it might be good to re-engineer some stuff. The grouping is trickier, but not even remotely an expert-level task (though it too has some performance implications).
Google doesn't have the know-how to separate or understand the context of searching only a certain group (or set of groups). It doesn't know how to search ONLY the topic and not the text body (or vice versa), etc. All of that data is separate and stuck in the database in different fields, which makes it WAY easier to search. We can have better search results than google because we have better access to the data, we just have to work through vBulletin's very simple code.
Yes agree. It is a shame that I found sometimes (or many times?) using the integrated search engine is not as good as just using 'search site by google'.
In my opinion, the 4letter+ issue is not as important as others. It is only reasonable to set such a reqirement and in most cases we don't need to search a word with less than 4 letters.
But I feel like lucky that I asked my question to the right person. Would you please spend a little time on help some clue for the question in my last post? Thanks in advance.
It will be wonderful if we can set google to search on limited range only like: xda-devs, ppcgeeks, msdn, pda4x, ppcfreeware, etc.

I think it depends on what is being searched for. Most RL friends know me for instantly hitting google to search on almost anything, but for this site I actually do use the integrated search most of the time. A well formed search here is still better than most results on google unless you need to use some pretty advanced searches that only Google can understand.

I'm about to pick on you just a bit...
Did you consider searching Google for 'Google Custom Search'? Fourth result down there's a step-by-step guide that explains it easily and also pushes the value of it when combined with AdSense. This is a search thread after all
I admit, I'm glad to have stumbled onto setting up that feature with adsense because I would actually like to use it just for my own site I'm setting up shortly.
Thanks a lot, I got it.
One more noob question(web design is apparently not my area), can I set it in a local page like this, bcz I don't own a website myself? [Edit: Never Mind, Got It!]
Later on after setup your site, pls pm me a link.
Tx.
Edit: Just tried to create my own search engine, take a look here
Edit: Wonderful! Yeah! So happy today.

It yields zero results because the word is too short.
Searching for ROM version #s
I just ran into a search problem myself. I was searching for radio version 1.14.25.05. The google search took me to a long thread, so I thought I'd just search for "1.14.25.05". It didn't return any results, so I assumed this version wasn't there. It wasn't until I asked for help on a new thread that I was embarrassed by someone who told me it was on post #2. I had incorrectly trusted search. With version #s being so important to what xda-developers is all about, having a robust thread search is critical. Any thoughts on possible improvements? Are there settings in this software that could be changed?

Searching for a 3-letter result... "YES" we can
So basically, everyone says to use "search" on XDA devs to look for answers for your questions, but nobody says "you should use google search if any word you're looking for is three letters or less"..... like SMS.
It's frustrating, following the rules, being told to follow the rules, then finding out following the rules didn't work anyways.
Fixing this nonsense would be great. Even removing the 'built-in forum search' entirely....? just a thought.
Apart from that, thanks for hosting an amazing site, full of talented, hard-working people and their efforts... if you can find them hehe

The rule is there to prevent people from asking questions that can be answered by either search engine we use. For a rule to work it needs to be short and to the point, no one will even try to read the rules if every rule is explained in detail.

We're well aware that the vB search engine isn't perfect but neither is the one from google. That is why we give you the option to use both.
I'm well aware that this can be confusing at times but simply searching for "how to search xda-developers.com?" would have given you this thread wich explains in the first post that you can use google and that we implemented it because the vB search doesn't allow words with less than 4 characters.
Best regards,

p.s. I always use the search in the navbar first I noticed later that my example search string gives really crappy results in the vb search.

I believe many users never read site rules. Once we register on any web-site, there always be a rule or a terms-of-use, and people's habit would be just click on 'Agree' without a glance at the content, since they are all similiar.
But we have a way to force new users to learn how to search and view the site. Simply change the rule to: New users can not post within say first 50 online hours after registered. Then they have to view and search first, especially if they came with some question or urgent problem to be solved.I think Vbulletin has the function of online-time statistics.
Just an idea for consideration, I don't know it will be practical or not.

The Forum Rules announcement has >51,000 views since march... not bad
Dave
Yes, looks like the situation is better. It works especially by continuous remindment everuwhere. What about number of new users since then?
Edit: Remindment like this works, thanks for everybody's effort. A further thought is: If everybody already read it, but still a lot don't follow it. That may be caused by some human nature for urgently need an answer for his question. Noticed MODs' effort like your goodself to execute the rule, it helped.
Sorry i'm not quoting people here, i'm typing this on my phone.
First, the number of people reading the rules is far less than the number of new users, which doesn't even account for the long time users. Not that it matters hugely, the rules only truly matter to people posting, which is realistically isn't too bad.
Regarding the use of two search engines, it can be seen in a bad way, or it can be seen as having two different tools instead of just one. Neither is perfect, neither is better (opinions and experiences may differ), and they can often be used interchangably, but they are not the same and should be used differently.
Min 4 letter search is awful for a tech forum. No idea why such a known forum hasnt found a work around.
Theres no way around how terrible it is. As mentioned before the sheer number of issues that arise with things that start or 3 letters long renders search impotent.
MMS/USB are two major problems Ive had recently and couldnt do a search to find an answer. Of course that results in yet another thread on the topic being created that is probably needless.
Google search isnt forum specific so it too is too cumbersome to be useful.
Orb , MMS ,SMS , USB, APK , API I mean over half the "talk" we use for Phones involves 3 letter acronyms. Not even beginning to mention something like 1.6 , 2.0 when getting spcifics on those 3 letter acronyms.

You can either, create a referrals URL, so that you give this to your friends, and they join via the URL and you get a referral.
Or
When registering (I'm told) there is a field to enter the name of an existing member who referred you to this site.
Dave
I've wondered about that too.
Thanks for clearing it up.

You'd be surprised I tend to be less helpful when I try to be, so maybe I should just flame my way to the big 1000
PS: If you're not too busy, can you mention to the powers that be the idea of having your phone, ROM and radio in your username bar (the thing to the left of each post - don't know what it's called...). It was mentioned in this thread as it went a little off topic in the second page, but it seems to have fizzled out a bit.
I think it would be a very useful idea as a lot of support threads ask for such information and quite a lot of users would rather not keep it in their signatures. It also standardises the layout of such things so you can quickly check which phone/ROM/whatever the user is talking about.
I suppose the issues would arise when someone has more than two or three phones as it would make the posts longer, but even then it wouldn't get so bad until it hit around five devices, as it's just two or three lines for each one. Maybe a drop-down box could be used for the device and we could recommend only including primary devices in that, while keeping older ones for your signature only.

Old thread, but wanted to post the method for creating a referrals URL since Dave's link above did not work..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/register.php?referrerid=4238197 <- replace this number with your user ID number
To find your user ID number, click on your user name in the upper right hand corner and see the new URL change in your location bar. Here is mine. Note the u= on the end.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=4238197
Referrals doesn't seem to do anything, but it is nice to know that I inspired someone to join up and hopefully contribute.

I dont understand how to use this site at all

If you post a 'i dont know how to do this' or 'its not working can some one help please'
you get loads of people telling you off and insulting you for it BUT the site has no propper search tool - the search thing is limited 'must be a certain amount of words' and say if i want HD2 ROM - whats the chances that that will be in the topic title EXACTLY
so the search brings back 0 results -
And if you ask for help, theres no notification system to say some one has replied?
so you have to book mark the page and keep going back - instead of logging in and all peoples replies popping up in a inbox type area...
lol - and 'tags cannot contain overly common words 'use / how'' - what the hell????
MAKE A PAID MEMBER AREA THAT WORKS PLEASE - ill pay $60 a year for a propper site
Well, the search tool is great. I used it so many times and never had any problem with it.
A paid/prenium membership... lol. Are you kidding ? Do you really think people will pay to get a smarter search engine when they can just think a few seconds more to use the proper key words and get the search engine working as they want ?
Why don't you subscribe to a thread you have posted in/started, and wait for an email alert that there has been a reply?
The Search tool isn't a Crystal Ball and doesn't read minds. Use it well and the results will improve. For example, a search that includes the word 'propper' will probably fail as the word is spelt 'proper'.
Sounds to me you just need a bit more experience with how forums work. As you become more familiar with the XDA forums it'll become easier.

Thread tags should be unique. ie. the following are pointless tags:
a, the, of, but, and, you, it, he, she, them, they,
The following are good tags:
AmonRA, ClockworkMod, Recovery, softbrick, ODIN
You should subscribe to threads you post in, then your usercp will show you replies to those threads.
Remember google is your friend. Search for what you want, and the word XDA, and you will find it 99% of the time

I second this. XDA has so much content from users that almost always you can find what you're looking for by either using Google or the XDA search. The key is word choice. That is why XDA urges users to search well prior to posting because the situation more than likely isn't unique to you.

I have been a member of this site for all of less than 4 days. And in that 4 days, I have learned:
1. How to Root
2. What ROM is best for me phone
3. How to use said ROM
4. What my phone can do when flashed
5. How not to be a n00b.
This site is absolutely amazing, and I learned, rooted, flashed, and enjoyed... All without using the search. I watched the "n00b video", cringed a bit, bit my lip and dove in. A wise man once said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step."
Trust me. I wanted to find someone who would hold my hand and lead me through it. But even my boss, who has rooted MANY phones, would not point me in any direction (and he has taught me MANY things). You learn best through trial and error. I think the best quote in the intro video is "READ READ READ!"
And as for a paid membership... Seriously? I can see donating to the site, and donating to the developers (which we should all be doing anyway)... But paying just to get premium access to features available on any other forum is just mundane.
However, we did have a VIP area for our donators on Xbox-HQ. Our members who donated got first pick access to the newest releases of SID's and Auto installers, and the like, and access to FTP servers with everything they needed (legally) to get started. Maybe that would work...
hmmmmm.
Otherwise, my advice to you, sir? Just point and click. Find your phone, find a thread that relates to you (if you cannot get the search to work how you want) and read read.... READ!
Good luck! It is really not that hard once you delve in!

P.S. Youtube works great too, "XDA Flash (name of phone here)" maybe?
