Hey,
This question has been asked a few times but with new roms comming out all the time I would like to ask again!
Currently I'm using baadnewz hd rom and the kernel that comes with it, using juice defended and setcpu, my phone will die by the time i go to sleep if it was at 100% when I wake up. This isn't good enough for me :/ I use my phone quite a bit.. Was looking for something a little better!
battery life
I use the latest stock rom with underclocking mod root and setcpu with some tweeks with sending around 200 texts 15 emails a couple tweets 1 hour talking and some doodle jump I get from six am to ten pm at 60% left.
What do you do on your phone playing games destroys battery life
I am on OpenDesire now, it seems a lot better. But still, I throw it on charge and in 1 hour it will charge 10%, but off charge it will drain 10% in 1 hour. It just seems so pathetic. People brag about 3 days battery life with their phones.
which eats up batt life more: games or surfing the net? I always thought it was the latter.
Also, what's the main difference between underclocking and undervolting? Won't underclocking mean a perpetually slower processing speed?

I can get two days before dying if I just email text and an hour of calling, but agian how do you use your phone what's eating up your battery?
And with set CPU I set it to 800mhz and when battery is below 35% I set it to 600
At 600 MHz I notice the browser it slower if I have more than one windows open
But the best is when I lock my phone the CPU scales down to 224mhz to 386mhz or something and that were I noticed the best battery advantage
games like angery birds destroys battery browsing is less consuming than calling.
Just to a quick Google servh on how to extend android battery life its pretty basic, keep brightness at 20 % Bluetooth and wifi off when not using use less Widgets and use advanced task manager
For me, with Overclock.. it's EXCELLENT! I can have it in standby but still have background data going (push gmail, twitter apps, etc.) for days at a time and still have some juice left.
Just today with some admittedly light usage (but I did use it) I had battery use time of 12Hrs with over 70% left.
I'm using setvsel @
35 @ 400MHz
50 @ 800MHz
65 @ 1200MHz
CPU Icon is set to refresh every second and it's supposed to cap at Vsel 2 @ 10%. It's as stable as ever.. been running like this for weeks now. I'm taking note of how much I appreciate the excellent battery life I get because my Vibrant has been getting really bad lately.

Battery Life is excellent - more than 48h without recharging is no problem.
I get 2 days of standby with heavy texting,surfing over wifi,calling and some gaming. DEFY battery performance is one the best amongst all Android phones.

Undervolting your cpu can harm your hardware real badly. I've had my defy stopped working and shut down completely in the past so i won't recommend you OC or UV
EDIT: tho i still undervolt but 19 vsel is too low for 300 mhz, raise it upto 26 or so
Yes, 19 vsel maybe too low, at least in my case. When I ran the stability test, anything less than 24 would hang the phone after some 10 minutes. 24 is fine in my case but I set it at 26 to give a little more juice.
LOL. Why the hell, should undervolting harm the cpu? Undervolting improves your cpu's lifetime, instead! Less voltage means less stress (heat) and less leak currents for the cpu.
Well, it's true that you might have some instability issues, when the voltage is too low. As soon as you experience so, you can raise the voltage a little, until you have a stable cpu. I've been using undervolting for my PC's CPUs for several years.

The battery life on the Defy is absolutely amazing.
I can easily get between 2 and 3 days of normal usage and somewhere in the region of 4-5 if I use it very little.
I reckon if I switched off 3G, had the brightness down as low as possible and generally tried not to use the phone much, I could push a week.
Sadly, my Defy is 'in the shop' just now, damned earpiece.
What do you guys run on the background? I probably able to get 1.5 days on normal usage. Even after charging and no usage, I lose about 10 % after an hour or so.

It is impossible to get 1.5 day if defy uses 10% for 1 hour standby. Defy rounds 95% to 100%, and 94% to 90%. So it is possible that an apparent 10% drop is actually a 1% drop. You may install Motocharge to see the battery in 1% increment.
I'm happy to hear everyone getting excellent battery life. The DEFY is a truly unique Android phone.. I'm just afraid that us stateside won't get devices like this because of AT&T... the Bravo is a step below the DEFY just because it doesn't share the same faux-rugged water resistant build. I'm glad T-Mobile picked this one up, overclocked it's only a bit slower than my Vibrant in most operations.
Well I did a Quadrant benchmark 'standoff' with a colleague of mine which has a Samsung Galaxy S [EU version of the Vibrant] and I beat him with over 250 points [the Galaxy S did 975, my Defy did 1334], both running Froyo and the Defy being non-overclocked.
I've also noticed that his Galaxy S tends to hang & stutter from time to time. Regarding battery life, he carries his charger with him at all times, I do not, 'nuff said.
I also get ~1.5days of battery life.
I'm able to squeeze more than 80 hours of usage on a single charge running PaYs 5.0. Light to moderate use of WiFi/Data/GPS/BT, no background syncs and most apps firewalled except through WiFi.

i used circle battery widget and it does shows 1% increments. after 90%, it slows down in terms of usage.
i also forgot to mention that my defy sometime runs pretty hot at 35-38C, which i think accelerates the discharge
what about autobrightness? if is set it on, the battery drains much faster.
For me, with undervolt (800/46;600/30;300/18) I can use my phone to make calls, send sms, surf the web, run some apps, and run one a two games.
After 24h of that usage, I have 50% remaining.
a strange thing happened to me (sorry for my English):
Yesterday I installed the camera 360 that did not work it gave some error. Last night when I went to sleep (1-1.30) had 50% battery, in the morning (7.30-8) phone was dead. I put the phone to recharge, from 11 to 3 o'clock phone has reached 30% of battery so i put the phone to recharge again. Until 10 pm the phone has reached again 30% of battery so I decided to give him a factory reset. With 30% i did 100+ app backups with titanium pro and I gave factory reset, after the phone restore from factory reset surprise the battery show 60% ??? I did restore 100+ app and battery show 50%, I played about a half hour and still 50% battery??? what the hell happened??? 360 camera app has to do with rapid battery discharge???
- I use advance Task Manager droidwall, light <10%, original rom only rooted
- anyway Battery discharge I think is caused by the signal GSM of my operator's.
- anyway in the night i decided to kill the traffic and by that the battery shouldn't discharged hardly over night. right?
(Q) sometimes the touch screen it freezes in games so I have to put the phone in standby and come out of standby, and then the touch screen works again ... this happens to you to?
I've been using CyanogenMOD 7 and love it (mostly). The one thing I don’t like about it is the short battery life. I'm kind of new to rooting phones so it took me a bit to get it rooted and get CM7 rolling. I was wondering if there are any mods out there like CM7 that have better battery life? Or if there's any thing I can add to CM7 to give it more batter life?
I've been using android since the first phone came out so I’m already knowledgeable in what to turn off to try and extend the battery life, but I have noticed a big decrees in batter since installing CM7.

You can under clock the processor when your phone is asleep. This creates better battery life.

your phone automatically underclocks your processor when it sleeps (for most CPU governors), you do not need to tell it to do so.
I'm not picking on you fyi, I'm just making sure we are giving people accurate information... there's only one thing worse than no information: incorrect/incomplete information.
op: which version of CM7 are you running? remember, the more minimal your setup (ie less homescreens, less widgets, manual syncing of gmail and whatever else, etc) the better your battery life will be. this is especially true of newer phones that are getting heftier cpu & gpus that, while intelligent with power consumption, are going to drain even larger capacity batteries relatively quick with moderate/heavy usage.
how long are we talking with battery life? how heavy a user are you? for reference, I get around 16 hours of battery life if I don't charge the phone at all from unplugging to battery dying with moderate to heavy usage (texting ~50 times a day, sometimes up to 100 emails depending on what's happening at work, couple hours of calls, couple hours of streaming music [pandora or audiogalaxy], couple of hours of games [peggle and plants v zombies mostly - both of which are resource hogs], etc).
I have just learned to get used to the fact that the phone is going to die if I use it a lot, so I've purchased three micro-usb cables and a car charger.. that way, unless I'm in an area where there is no charge-capable usb port nearby, I'm always able to get a little more juice if need be.

but i also mean setting the max sleep to 368mhz. by default its set at 800mhz. sometimes with apps running in the background, the processor may go to 800mhz without you knowing
check out 'powersave' and set your cpu max to 806mhz. should last you a nice long time like that. responsiveness suffers, of course.
'ondemand' and 806mhz is the best comprimise for me. still fine with HDvideo recording, streaming audio, Nav, etc
if you really want to make it last... clock down to 400mhz, turn off all the sync, set brightness and timeout to minimum, all the radios off (airplane mode), and the volume down, on vibrate.

But some govenors don't drop the sleep to the lowest profile. In fact almost all keep it above the lowest clock. Other kernels allow it and you can also use third party to set it lower. When the tweaKr script becomes universal it will be even better =)

It suffers in powersave because it stays at the lowest setting only. No reason to set to 806. Lol and that bottom comment is hella funny =), but if he does that his phone will just be...a waste of pocket space.
Your best bet is to do some research on kernels. If you are using cm7 to cm 7.0.3 id recommened pyros kernel. If you are on 7.1 or a nightly over 121 I believe id go with eugene's streamline5. It did wonders for mine Also there is a battery saving tips. Google G2 battery saving tips. Should be first link that comes up.
Cyanogenmod roms are known to be battery hungry. Nom nom nom.

Can you elaborate on what kind of battery life you are getting now? How many hours, and for what level of usage?
How long have you been on CM? It takes a couple charge cycles of the battery after flash any ROM, for the battery meter to be accurate. Clear battery stats (as mentioned) then charge to 100%, let drain to about 20%, repeat a couple times. Don't drain until the phone dies. Some people say to do this, and its not good advice. Over discharge of Li ion batteries can cause them to no longer take a charge. There are people on here, on the Vision and other phones, that let their battery drain to empty, then the phone would no longer boot, forcing them to replace the battery.

With a rooted device, you might want to try CPU Master Free. You will be able to decrease the clock speed.
Also, you could try to UnderVolt your CPU. Search for your phone model UV in te forums.
Min frequency is 350MHz so if your not doing anything it will be idling at 350mhz

On my gn i find the screen to be the biggest user of thr battery power so underclocking prob would have little use, ohh and iirc the phone uses race to idle which procesess overything as fast as possible to get the cpu back it low power idle state.

I normally charge my phone before go to sleep, I don't overcharging it during the night.
My SetCpu frequencies are Min 19/ 692 Max.
I am connected through 3G data ALL day and I am always online on Skype, I use my phone a lot, browsing, games, and phone call, and I can tell you, thanks to the undervolting, I got home at night with 50% juice remaining.
Without SetCpu, I would have 10/15% left at night...

Remember that battery life also depends on Radio version and kernel installed.

If you mean after you just bought it, Its enough to let it fully discharge twice, without charging it, in between this two circles.
Anyway with nowdays Li-ion battery, you won't really need to this so anymore, since the lifespan of battery start to decrease from the moment that they left the production factory.

I would not recommend juicedefender. Doesn't do anything at all. The only thing I notice is that nu wi-fi turned itself off when it shouldn't.
You could try AutomateIt. You can set up your own actions.
Ex: Within 100 meters of school > Sound off

for me, The latter versions of CM10 have significantly shorter battery life than other roms such as cm7 and older versions of CM10.
this is across all of 3 my batterys, all of them varying in age, form as old as the phone to anout 8 months old.

I have problem with BF5X High-Capacity Gold Battery 2430 mAh (for Moto MB525) under 3 and 4MS2G ROM.
It is charging Up to 81% only and I have tried out Walter`s patch But nothing.
Under Stock FROYO it charges Up to 90%.
Please, ignore/delete if the tread is only for CM10!
I think that I found the culprit.. (maybe)
- install SetVsel
- check if the values are higher than than those on bootmenu
Can some one check this?

But bootmenu has much lower values..
so far, so good..

Hi, I am using the exact same battery as yours.
Using Quarx's new kernel in the 2nd boot version of CM10, that battery can charge normally to 100%...

Just to make it crystal clear, the default boot menu values are actually OVER volted.
Calculate values for your frequencies either by using this app-----> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1815142
Or by using the formula (frequency)/20 ±2.
Use boot menu to set frequencies and voltages.
Keep 'Load all modules' OFF, and governor as Interactive.

That's the problem... in bootmenu the values are lower than those, when andoid is running!
(and yes.. I used that app )
eg:

runtime: vel1: 300 @ 42

I've been using SetVsel to adjust voltage. Should I be adjusting the bootmenu's instead? Why?

I have BF5X ... So what does this mean in comparison to HF5(X)?

Usually charge via wall-mount since PC-USB takes longer.
Usually have to charge overnight.
With semi-regular use, It's lasted 21hrs.
Usually lasts less than that with video/music/screen on constantly.
(With 3G-on, Brightness 25-50%, subsonic running playing music, getting a few texts, and messing with some settings/desktop I lost just under 10% batt in one hour. or 1-2% usage per 10 minutes.)
I only use SetVsel:
300/17
600/32
800/42
1000/52
up_threshold: 86%
Apply @ boot: Ticked.
Limiting Vsel2 @ 10%
up_threshold to 99% @ 10%

Why?? Coz you can....
using boot menu instead of setvsel just reduces the no of apps you need to use.
Why do a patch when you can program the system itself?
Plus, auto patches at boot increase the time it takes for the phone to become usable after boot.
AFAIK, BF5X and HF5X are the same... I don't know this for sure, but someone said this some time back on the dev thread...
18.11 was a good build... I got 4.5 hrs on continuous 3G use... and about 18-20 hrs on occasional use....

for me, The latter versions of CM10 have significantly shorter battery life than other roms such as cm7 and older versions of CM10.
this is across all of 3 my batterys, all of them varying in age, form as old as the phone to anout 8 months old.

Ya, battery life is lesser and battery temperatures are higher on CM10 05.12 in my experience.
Its a bug of the latest build...
Let's wait to see what the next one does....

Any other adjustments beyond Vsels I should adjust in the Bootmenu? i.e. the 10 batt options SetVset had.
What blows my mind is the phone I had before Defy was just a QWERTY keyboard sliding cellphone... freaking 2+ days of usage! Now I can barely make it to 24hrs! AGh!

You can do a lot in boot menu....
set thresholds, set CPU speed in sleep, on wakeup, etc....
its been months since i used setvsel, so I'll have to look up the options you're talking about..
Well, me and my battery are about to go our separate ways, I notice heavy drops lately, for example from 70% directly to 50%. I believe the battery is dying, so I ordered a 2400mAh battery from an amazon.co.uk reseller. My current battery is an BF5X original, nearing the 2 years mark now. I charged once every 2 days when in CM7, but often every day after heavy usage. With CM10 I have to charge every day, it drains more.

I'm a real heavy user.... most of the time my phone is plugged in, coz with the loads I put on the 3G antenna and on the processor, I only get 4-4.5 hours of use....
Pasting this here for safekeeping from main dev thread:
Suspend - no1 power consumer.
I second that. Using the same tools like GSAM Pro + ROM Toolbox and Android Toolbox from 3C, i managed to isolate the same process. Underneath it all this "suspend" belongs to the kernel and from a more detailed report it is allways accompanied by "loop#" processes. In my case, kernel and its processes is the no1 consumer, all the time.
The second consumer is Android System, mostly due to atmospheric sensors (i had no ideea the Defy+ has anything like this..probabily because it doesn't  but the processes are there anyway)
Even like that i get at least 30hrs between charges, permanently having wifi or 2G on.. .
My HF5X battery is 1yo(came with the phone) and is being charged with no concern whatsoever about preserving it's life ...so yeah, random times and random sources (pc or wall plug, even used my e-cigar ac adapter).
What i did so far was:
- I had problems with "media server" as a power hog. After searching the forum for a solution a thread gave me the right one.
I ran mp3 check and found several mp3 files that were broken. Fixed whatever i could and replaced what was irreparable (AC/DC-Thunderstruck, of course, was one of'em)
- Found and removed unnecessary start-up entries. Wherever this was not an option i disabled their receivers (i REALLY don,t need to have YouTube ready at boot time, having it started on youtube links is nice enough).
- Used many launchers to the day. The last one and by far the least RAM/CPU and power hungry is the current one - Lightning Launcher by PIERROX (see signature). Look at the download size in the Play Store (handsome title btw) Did i mention it's FREE?
- Keyboard was replaced with Perfect Keyboard Pro - low RAM footprint.
- I permanently use a live wallpaper that gives me an overview of the CPU, RAM, BATTERY and DIRECTION (compass is allways on but is literraly close to 0 in terms of power consumption)
-ALL the useless stuff was uninstalled or replaced.
- Using Android Toolbox i setup database and app load optimisations to run on boot.
- ZRAM is disabled, KSM on, SWAP (64mb) is on.
What i want to do:
- collect a full system dump, if possible. Get it analysed (in UNIX there's kdb for that purpose, i have no ideea what is the equivalent here)
Hope this helps/points/suggests an approach to someone. Furthermore, may i suggest a SEAL TS3 for those mild Siberian winter nights? IP68 & MIL-SPC860 should help
