Use Hermes as WiFi Hotspot

Hey everyone. I'm looking for a way to turn my Hermes into a mobile hotspot. Be rather handy to make my PSP playable online wherever I happen to be sitting, like work for example....
Does anyone know of a way to do this? Internet connect allows me to connect via USB or Bluetooth, but not WiFi, so if there's a workaround or a magical piece of software that will allow this to happen, I'd love to hear about it.

from my looking into the same idea it can't be done under windows mobile due to the MS TCP/IP stack.
maybe if linux for the Hermes gets serious then it will work but probably only multi client peer to peer mode rather than ap mode.
please pove me wrong as I think it is a killer app idea for 3G devices like the hermes.

Damn. How does the MS TCP/IP stack prevent it from doing that? I'm not questioning what you say, just wondering what the mechanics are that stop it? I'm realistic about what it could do, in that I'd only be able to connect one device at a time as opposed to it operating as a fully fledged router. I'm surprised this kind of functionality has been overlooked by Microsoft, as I'm sure other people who use WM devices would look for this kind of functionality also, not just people slacking off at work with a PSP or DS

The XDA gurus who figured out the VoIP over 3G or WiFi may have a deeper insight to this.

Yes. It's possible to do this:
Internet<->RAN(3G)<->Bluetooth<->Laptop,etc
But I think the original poster is asking whether this is possible:
Internet<->RAN(3G)<->Wi-Fi<->Laptop, etc
..or at least that's what I would like to be able to do...

It's possible. So think about an ad-hoc network. PC-PC and internet sharing gets you out to the web.
Same kind of scenario could apply, but the device doesn't necessarily need to be able to complete the routes. The bluetooth PAN network already does this, and if you have 3G, WiFi isn't usually going to be connected to a network that's much faster.
Only problem the family will be upset when you leave the house, if that's a factor for your setup.
The Internet Sharing feature could be leveraged to provide this functionality, but USB and BT are the only ways to connect with the stock application. That would be an excellent basis for this new application, though.

this has been poss for a long time by using a PC to do the DHCP and roting to share a WAN connection from the phone. The question (at least how I read it) is asking about the phone routing and sharing its WAN connection over wifi to one or more clients that may not even be PCs (game devices etc)

Options for a DATA Connection Manager?

As a previous Symbian OS user, now quite happily converted to the world of WM, there is one thing which (In my experience at least) Symbian did alot better.... Manage my data connections.
With my Nokia E61, I was able to have the device prompt me which connection type or access point(GPRS vs. WiFi vs. Bluetooth) to use whenever I tried to make a connection. It also allowed me to set default connections for certain applications etc etc...
What I would love to have is the ability to easily tell my device WHICH connection to use without alot of hassle, or fear that my device will connect to GPRS while I am roaming and have access to WiFi instead.
What applications are available to manage this type of thing, and is there any concensus on which works the best? Any and all constructive commentary would be greatly appreciated.

Do you even know about the Comm manager on your device?
You can pick connections that way. Check Schaps updated Comm Manager.

Correct me if I am wrong, but when wifi is available the device automaticely connect through it (even if data connection is still present).
There is one known exception: Windows Live Mobile which always try to use the data connection. In order to enforce it to use the wifi you have to kill the data connexion and cancel the data connexion that WLM will initiate at its start.
My guesses are that an allready opened connexion will stay on the data channel even if the wifi is fired afterward. For instance, if you start to stream a video through your data plan, then start the wifi, the video will still download through the data connexion

I had a P900, I know exactly what you need/want.
wm5/wm6 just cant do it.
you want the device to ask you what connection to use when a program tries to access the net.
you want to simply define a program and it's connection...
well, the guys at M$ didn't think we need to choose ...

I'm waiting for the launch of Sony Ericsson P1, which will be on Symbian. Do you know of any site where developers come together to do things to improve the OS? Much like this forum?

Of course I know about the com manager. UNFORTUNATELY, the device does not just go for wifi when wifi is available... It doesn't care, and defaults to a GPRS connection.
Elivne knows what I'm talking about.... I'm glad someone does.
It's just frustrating when a device doesn't seem to actually the wifi connection that is available to it.

{Troubleshooting} Solving the Vonage VoIP/SIP WM6 client Issues

The goal of this thread is to get Vonage softphone accounts working with WM6 Internet Calling again. I'm going to use my cosmic moderation powers to delete without notice all posts that don't actually contribute to this effort. I don't want any "how do I set up provisioning..." posts cluttering up this thread. If you are having this issue, please respond to the poll so Vonage can get an idea of the affected XDA posters. If you answer no, then please post here! TMK all Vonage softphone users are affected, so you would be one of a kind.
To aid with troubleshooting, I'm also willing to (temporarily) share my Vonage softphone provisioning information with trusted SIP gurus who wish to participate. Post here if you're interested.
Ok, Here's what we know:
Sometime during the week of June 18th, Vonage softphone accounts stopped working on all WM6 builds that had Internet calling activated
SJPhone however, continues to function normally.
WM6 Internet calling still functions normally with other SIP service providers.
Given this information, I installed the Airscanner packet sniffer on my Tytn. The 30 day free trial for this sniffer can be found here. This nifty little utility creates packet captures that can be read by Ethereal. The current version of Ethereal is located here.
I next attached Airscanner to the IEEE 802.11b/g Compatible WiFi adaptor on my TyTN, connected to my home AP and turned my TyTN's phone radio off. Then I proceeded to capture the sip initiation sessions with SJPhone (worked fine) and WM6 Internet Calling (showed "No Service" after long "Searching" delay). Everybody who wants to participate in this exercise should connect this way btw. Let's not cloud the troubleshooting effort with the ideosyncracies of 3G connectivity.
Here are the relevant packet captures (click images for full size versions in new browser windows)

Initial Analysis
As it turns out, the SIP register packet sent by Internet calling is being ignored by Vonage's SIP servers at sphone.vopr.vonage.net:5061. WM6 Internet Calling retrys the original Registration request 11 times then gives up. However, the registration packet is immediately accepted when sent by SJPhone. This points to a formatting issue with Internet calling's SIP Registration packet.
SJPhone is also sending a binding request to the SoftJoys STUN server but you can clearly see that the response from Vonage is occuring directly directly after the STUN bind request and is in response to the original UDP packet and not the STUN bind packet (response from softjoys is not shown but is further down in the conversation). Conclusion: STUN isn't the reason why SJPhone is succeeding here.
So it would appear to be something in the REGISTER request itself. Here are the differences I've noticed:
the REGISTER sip URI contains the :5061 port suffix in SJPhone and not in WM6. However, both programs are sending the request to port 5061 at sphone.vopr.vonage.net. This probably isn't the issue
the source port for SJPhone is 5060 and for WM6 its 1153. This may be the issue IMO. Perhaps Vonage added firewall rules that restrict outbound connections to known SIP ports. I'm working on coming up with a way to test this currently.
the contact binding information is completely different between WM6 and SJPhone. Could this be an issue? Any SIP gurus out there, feel free to comment!
Is anybody seeing anything else here?
Next steps:
Once we've identified the likely causes for the failure, I will get on the phone with Vonage technical and go over our findings. I may even link them to this thread. Hopefully the outcome will be a quick change to Vonage's firewalls or SIP servers. Also, it would be nice to find out more about WM provisioning/registry settings to handle these:
How to provision STUN servers
How to force the source port from a random 1000-2000 to 5060. BTW: setting the enableport5060 value to a 1 doesn't change this. It merely causes Internet Calling to start listening on port 5060.
Let's get this issue solved so Vonage Softphone accounts can once again work with Windows Mobile!
... or we Vonage users could just close our accounts and just install asterisk or use a different service that works I guess...

One of our posters has already engaged Vonage Customer care & told them to use this thread as a reference. Hopefully we'll get an answer on this ITNF.

I recently upgraded my tytn to WM6 and was about to get Vonage for my phone, and i found your post saying it wont work so i set out on a long search of the internet for a possible solution. Well, I set up a Trixbox ([email protected]) PBX using the nerdvittles virtual appliance & then trunked it to my Vonage softphone account. Then I set up a remote extension and provisioned my TyTN to attach to my PBX. After an afternoon tuning NAT, everything now works just swimmingly. Even 3G works, and I hnow ave audio in both directions too! Based on this, I believe that the issue lies in the way Internet Calling sets up the contact portion of the register packet that is causing the Vonage SIP servers to error out. This is why I never get a response, not even an error response, to my REGISTER packets
I've got three bugs to eliminate in my asterisk configuration and once they are fixed I'm thinking that I have a workaround.

We understand from your email that you are experience problems using the SoftPhone with Windows Mobile 6.
The SoftPhone application was designed to be used with a PC and not a Pocket PC running Windows mobile. I have pasted the link below that will provide the PC requirements needed to use the SoftPhone.

Based on this, it is clear Vonage doesn't want to deal with the root cause of this issue. Too bad, IMO because there's a vast plethora of WM6 devices now out there which could connect to Vonage services if this was resolved. Business lost for Vonage it would seem.
Based on their response, my advice for Vonage users would be to close your softphone accounts & find a more suitable provider such as sipphone.com. FTTB the asterisk solution is a (very usable) workaround but there's no guarantee that Vonage won't shut that down in the same manner.

Any new update which u can share with us ?
the problem i have now is i can make calls , but i can't receive any incoming since vonage did something .
I used it on my pda and worked ok .

glad i found this thread, i was racking my brain as to why this wasnt working... i only just got a TyTn to replace my POS HP 6915, so naturally I got a WM6 rom for it mainly for using my Vonage Softphone through the voip feature.... great
i guess if vonage are wiping their hands off it the only thing to do is see what somes in the way of updates from M$ ?
or someone to do a bit of reverse engineering?

Hope I'm not committing a faux pas by bumping this, but I haven't been able to find any up-to-date information on this anywhere. Has anyone solved this problem? Or did everyone give up?
I just switched to Vonage, and added Softphone without realizing that no one has a current method of connecting to it with WinMo (via apps or native VOIP support), so I'd really like to get it working

WM6 VPN dialer

Hi,
I have S710 - Hermes - DASH. Windows Mobile 6
I have setup the VPN profile with appropiate my personal vpn server ip at home and information in 'Settings' --> 'Connections' --> VPN --> New.
I connected to Wi-Fi or using Cellular data, I could browse the Internet but I could not find where I can launch, or execute this VPN profile.
Any Help please.

in WM 2003 there was a link in the menu that opens when you click on the G or 3G icon in the taskbar. For some reason we less minded will never understand Microsoft decided that this practical feature was redundant.
They did the same with the WIFI button from WM5 to WM6.
So the only way I know to dial VPN connections is either to rely on that buggy automatism, that might dial it, when you access a certain IP range (you can specify that range in the vpn settings) or you can go to control panel, connections and edit that vpn connection. Right click on the connection, there's a item called "dial".
These are the only possibilities I know of :-(

SmartPhone Network Access?

I purchased my Excaliber/Dash SmartPhone thinking the only major difference from PPC was touchscreen support and Office applications but now I'm having difficulty finding information on how to access network resources from a SmartPhone. My next phone will be a Windows Mobile Professional device.
The environment is a Windows 2003 Small Business Server Professional network. I can access the web server but cannot figure out how to browse the network or join the domain. I had to disable certificate checking in the Dash registry to connect via WIFI through the Radius Server. ActiveSync 4.5 works just fine with Exchange and Outlook.
I'm thinking maybe some third party software might help but I have no idea where to begin. Can someone point me in the right direction?

No RDP or network share support in non-touchscreen (standard) mobiles. Closest you can get is some kind of FTP app.
Why would you want to join your phone to a domain? I mean I know the option is there in professional devices, but what does it actually do for you?

Thanks for the information. Microsoft Active Sync allows you to browse the device from a computer (limited) so it doesn't appear that it would be that difficult to have the device at least browse the computer and possibly browse the network.
I dislike devices that have limited functionality built into them. For example. My Samsung T409 has WIFI and Bluetooth and GPRS/EDGE but the WIFI can only be used for T-Mobile [email protected] and Bluetooth can only connect to headsets. I understand that there are many reasons for this from economical to technical.
Similarly, restricting networking capabilities in mobile devices just doesn't make much sense to me but I suppose the typical Smartphone user would not care. I mean that's supposed to be the nature of mobile devices - seamless connectivity. When my T409 switches from a WIFI hotspot to a cell tower it's seamless. I don't even know that has occured until I look at the display.
And as for joining domains, that is like so many other things techheads do like overclocking, running multiple monitors, using KVMs and multiple computers, running Exchange and Internet Security and Acceleration Server and Windows Server Update Services and other stuff. Most people wont need to do this but it's a must for a Techy. Using domains for security and group policy is just a great way to manage computers and devices. And also the option is in my version of the WM6.1 cooked ROM.
