Media Player file types - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

My WM10 player doesn't always play the video and music files I want, is there a list of the files types that the player will work with.
Failing this, is there another media player that will work with the most common types ie. mpeg, avi, wmv etc

MX Video player streaming mkv files

I discovered that MX Player will stream H.264 encoded files with AC3 audio from Windows shares I can browse to with ES File Explorer (it will stream most other video files as well).
The only thing is, the device doesn't recognize mkv as a file extension for video, so it won't even let me choose a program to open the file. If I simply rename the extension to mp4, it will stream on MX Player smoothly, without any issues with frame skips or audio. Even with the mp4 extension, the stock video player will not play them. If I copy the files to the device, the stock player plays them without a problem.
On my OG Galaxy Tab, mkv files are considered video. Stock player will not stream them, but MX Plyer will. However, it's so slow and skippy that they're unwatchable.
Is there a way to associate mkv files with video? I don't really want to have to rename the file extension every time I want to watch the video.
ETA: Okay, I figured it out. If you long press on the file in ES File Explorer, you can Open As video. It will not play HDTV .ts files smoothly, however.

Need AVRCP enabled media player that plays ipod .mp4s

Playing .wma through music player?

Evening all,
Is there anyway of getting .wma audio files to play through the default music player? It says "file not supported"
MP3's work fine.
Cheers
wma files dont work on the stock player...so you have 2 options
1)Use a third party music player
2)Convert the wma into an mp3...i prefer you use oxelon media converter for this

[Q] mp4 music files

It appears the standard google music player won't play mp4 music files. If I rename them to .m4a, about 90% play properly, but the other 10% won't play.
Why doesn't google like the mp4 extension?
More fundamentally, any idea what the problem might be with the files that don't play? They all play with foobar2000, itunes, vlc and media player classic. Finding the original CDs and re-encoding would be a hassle and transcoding loses audio quality.
I'd rather not use other music players, as they tend to be too resource heavy or involve too many permissions.
