How do I rename a file using mtty. help my device cannot boot!!!! - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

My device cannot boot because i accidentaly renamed the Pim.vol file to something else while making a backup.
I have been reading this board for 2 days and not been able to find any information about copying or renaming files.
I havew been able to run mtty and connect to my device. However, i dont know any of the mtty commands for my phone. I just need to rename the original pim.vol file so the device will boot!
Please help!!
I have a Dopod 310 (Oxygen) from China. Actually i know how to do the hard reset, but havent backed up my SMS. If there is a way to extract the SMS messages then that could be an alternative.

Hi. Unfortunately, MTTY will not help you. It is a tool to communicate with the bootloader, and it has no commands of its own. It only sends command (just as you type them) to the bootloader, and it has no control over the file system (the OS needs to boot up for that).
It is strange though. I renamed pim.vol many times on couple of different devices just to clear it. Thing is when you rename it a new blank version appears after reset.
In any case, it should not have prevented device from booting so I think you may have another problem.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Thank you, now to the next step...
Well now that i know mtty is a dead end, is there a special place in the phone where SMS messages are kept? Pim.vol keeps contacts and calendar, but not SMS... I had just copied pim.vol to the SD card, but that doesnt really help me since all my contacts are already in Outlook... i was actually in the process of backing up when this happened! Is there any way to run file manager type commands through the USB cable, or at least run some type of safe mode so it wont freeze? If I can get the SMS then i can just do the hard reset. I am going to India in a few hours and would like to use this phone. its a great phone by the way.
Thanks for all your help im very impressed with the quality of this board. im way in over my head here. hehehe

Can anyone HELP ???.........

Before swapping my XDAIIi with my new EXEC I made a back-up on my SD CARD. BUT THE EXEC CANOT RESTORE FROM THIS LOCATION!!!..... Is there anyway of recovering my data????? thank you anyone out there with more knowledge and expertise who could help.........
Find another device running the same ROM version as your old device and restore your data to that device. The extraxt what you need and active sync. The transfer all data to the new device.
Thanks.....It was exactly what I thought. But I have tried this on 4 different machines.....and they all crashed or froze and it just didnt happen........
Is there any other possible way!? :?
When you say you made a backup on your SD card, I'm guessing you mean a backup of the entire XDAIIi system (including all your files, all program files and all ROM files).
If so, you can't restore a backup from an XDAIIi onto an XDA Exec. They're two completely different machines and the backup will be incompatible.
Like badgerboybadger says, you need to extract from your backup only those files that contain your personal data: your documents, templates, ringtones and so on. Leave behind anything connected with the device or installed programs. Then you can copy your personal data onto your Exec and it will work. If you want to transfer installed programs from the IIi to the Exec then you'll need to reinstall them on the Exec...
....silicon,
Yes Indeed, I did make a full system backup!
and you are talking about something i was not aware it is possible to do???
lets see......
you say......"you need to extract from your backup only those files that contain your personal data: your documents, templates, ringtones and so on. Leave behind anything connected with the device or installed programs. Then you can copy your personal data onto your Exec and it will work"......

Yeah - I guess that was what I was suggesting, but I've got no idea how to do this! Sorry.
I wasn't sure which way you'd have done your back up or whether it's possible to extract particular files. I suppose it must be, but I've never done it.
If you still have your XDAIIi then can you copy specific files off it?
Alternatively, do you still have a synchronised documents folder on the PC to which you used to connect it? That should have most of the documents that you'll want to keep.
If not I don't know what to suggest.
Providing your old PDA is still available, you really need a backup program that you can run on both PDAs. For example, something like Sunnysoft's Backup Manager - even a time-limited trial edition may be sufficient. Select and back up the required files/data to SD-card on the old PDA, then move the card to the new PDA. Install the backup program there and recover the files/data with that.
Just be careful of the different program versions, try not to copy system files across, and be prepared to do it a couple of times (or more) until you get it right.

XDAIIs - SMS draft missing

Whenever I compose and not able to send the SMS and click the OK button it disapear, in normal condition it shoul be saved in the Draft folder.
Although it is visible in the counter when I open the draf folder there is nothing in it.
I already perform a soft reset and try to boot in safe mode to check if there is a conflict with the application installed at my phone but nothing works.
I have tried to explore the folder windows/messaging to check if the Draft SMS is physically saved in the device and I think it is there (by checking the date and time of the file is created).
I need some advise on how can I solve this problem withou performing a hard reset, because rigth now I'm just manually deleting files at windows/messaging to save storage space.
I know harset will definetlt solve this but I dont want to perform a hard reset since I dont have a PC to configure my XDA back ang installed my favorite applications
You might need to hard reset...to solve this problem...
Avoiding Hard reset
I know Hard reset will definetly resolve my problem but will introduce more because I dont have a PC to doit as for now. I'm just currently renting one a internet cafe
wow is going to be dificult if you don't have computer..
Withou a Computer
Yah, I know it is difficult, although rigth now my hand are itchi to hard reset my phone I'm trying hard not to because I will not be able to use my favorite apps ang games. If I just have an admin priveledge with this PC that I am using I will not have any second thought to performe a hard reset.
That is why I posted my problem here, for my hope there there is somebody that could help me.
In addition I have Resco explorer install witha registry editor plugin, so incase i need to check or edit any file or registry I can.
You can try backup with Sprite Backup or Spb Backup. Hard Reset then restore everything except e-mail/messaging.

restoring/upgrading etc for pim.vol
I have backed up a pim.vol and changed my device with same OS WM 5.0 however when the pim.vol is restored the contacts do not appear.
1)Is there any software to read pim.vol and extract it in txt,csv file.
2)Is there any software to rewrite pim.vol to fit in newer roms.
3)Is there any software to upgrade or repair pim.vol files.
4)Is there any way to add data from pim.vol to Outlook .
5)I have two pim.vol files both of different devices but WM5,
Is their way to interchange data between them so that each other device

Same problem
I have a similar problem. I would like to fix a failing pim.vol. If I put it on my device I get "no service" on the phone and can't access my calendar or contacts.
I found a perl script that parses pim.vol for contacts, but it only extracted about 20 out of over 100.
I have exactly the same problem as drkosse except that my contact list is around 4000 and I just updated like 5% of it last week without sync. So I really need it back up. Any tools to fix it?
Hey,
I am also urgently needing some application to read or extract my contacts from a pim.vol.
Any suggestions>?
I thought there is an answer for this...
I would also be highly interested in something that could do that.
yes im having the same problem! i went froma moto Q to HTC Mogul 6.1
i copied the pim file from the storage card after renaming the first one.
the soft reset. then clicked contacts and it just shuts out!
im not sure what to do now. i need those numbers!
lol
I had the same problem, flashed my Omnia with a new rom, forgotten to extract all contacts appointments etcpp, so had searched for a tool to extract the information from the pim.vol (which i saved wisly before)
had found this:
http://www.phatware.com/index.php?q=product/details/dbexplorer
looks like it works, doing now an extract of the data and restore into the systems pim.vol (else it won't work, the pim.vol's are incompatible through different roms ): )
I also really do need a tool for repairing my pim.vol DB. Isn't there any solution available yet? Calendar and Contacts won't start anymore, also I get shown thet there is no Service available, if I use my broken pim.vol. If I rename it and it gots replaced with a newone, everthing is working fine again, but all my data is lost, of course. Also DBExplorer isn't working for me, it says that file is no valid database or broken. :-( Can anyone help me pleaze! Greetz, BKC

contacts restore help :(

My mda is dead my display flatcabel is broken...
now i got to recover my contacts that i have saved on my sd card.
any idea how to restore them on pc?
Thanks
If you saved them on your SD card then just put the card into a card reader and copy them to your pc. Another thing, even though your display is dead, you may still be able to access the phone over activesync if it still boots.
I did already hard reset cause in first i meant that it was something wrong with software...
it destroyed all data on phone exept on sd card, i copied backup contacts file on pc but i dont have an idea how to open contacts on pc (is there somme kind of viewer or maybe virtual pocket pc for Xp)? i hear active sync signal when i connect Mda via usb but i dont see anything so i am not able to install anything or to do synchronization. And i still need my contacts...
Help
I've read where you can open the file that had your contacts in it up in a hex editor and it will allow you to view your contacts. Other than that, I don't know of any program that will open it up normally though. If all you're needing to do is see them, then that method should be ok. If you need to do more with them though you may want to explain what program you backed them up with and see if anyone else has any ideas.
By the way, there are programs that allow you to view what you would see on your phone on your PC. If you're still getting a good sync then using one of them should work. Here's the link to one I've tried that works well. - http://www.mymobiler.com/

Serious help needed please!!!

Hello i have need from someone who want to make me a favor and help me.
Im ex Blackstone user and i move to Android.

THe good news is that i still have on my PC a PIMbackup.pib file but its made like binary one..
There is a chance to get my contacts back!!!
WHat i need is someone with WinMo device can do it for one minute.
Just to run Pimbackup on his own Device and to restore the Contacts from the .PIB file i will provide
After this is done just re Backup them again BUT in normal mode without binary etc
in this case the final .pib file will be able to transfer it to a zip .csv file and Put all the contacts back in my SIM card via Gmail
So if somene want to help me will be really thankfull for that its emergency.
The other variant if someone do not want to use HIS device is to do the same procedure with a Windows Mobile Emulator but i don`t know how to work with this and make it to work on my desktop PC i already try several hours to set up everything but just not working
