I notice that t-mobile in the uk are offering the compact III with copilot. Has anyone installed tomtom 6 on it? does it work ok?
Also i read somewhere that the co-pilot software bundle is being offered with free traffic alerts? Any truth in that? Not seen anything on the website about it.

Yes tried and tested TomTom6. Went on a 100 mile roundtrip on Friday without any problems at all. The GPS reception is excellent. I had the phone down in my centre console and it worked great.
Haven't tried CoPilot but TT works well.

If there is free traffic info available, maybe the copilot is a better option than tomtom. I think traffic alerts are a subscription service with tomtom.

ansaar99, well pointed. that would a benefit if you have web'n'walk. which i am planning to get as well anyway. so should be gd idea to get live traffic alerts init.
Co-Pilot is an excellent piece of kit, not as intuitive and simple as Tom Tom but certainly worth the inclusive price.
The traffic alerts are free for the first two years and instructions for how to set them up are included in the box.
The one benefit Co-Pilot has it that from personal experience the maps are slightly more up to date... plus it's cheap.
Make sure you get web n walk though, it saves a ton on those traffic GPRS charges.

when you say saves on the traffic GPRS. what do you mean about that?

In order to get the latest Traffic information the Phone will connect to the co-pilot live server over GPRS. This is the only information you will get over GPRS when using Co-Pilot.
This is charged at 7.50 a mb without web n walk and if you are using will easily rack up 1mb of data usage over a month. With web n walk you pay 7.50 for unlimited data including the co-pilot live data.

I have recently purchsed a MC3 and have installed TT6, but for some reason i cannot pick up the internal GPS receiver,
Can you plese help me?
i have made sure that i have downloaded the quick GPS, and have also selected the internal GPS receiver as degault,
also selected com 4 in my gps setting on the actual device
any ideas???

Leave the GPS applet alone, put it back to where it was when you got the device:
GPS Program Port should be COM4
GPS Hardware Port should be COM0
Baud Rate 9600
Now in tomtom start the application and select other Change Prefences/ Show GPS Status - configure Other NMEA GPS receiver, Baud rate 9600 and Com 4 - now take the unit outside and wait for a few mins to get a signal lock - Mike

Hello all
I have just purchased the MDA Compact III and will now load up some Tomtom 6 maps via the MicroSD card (which is being delivered as yet)..
My question is, before when starting tomtom (on other devices), it used to ask me if i wanted to switch on the bluetooth so that it could detect device (receiver)..How would it work now wit the built in receiver?? Would it just detect automatically?
Also, i don't understand the quickgps icon. Do i have to use it or is it only for a faster connection to a satellite?
Sorry if these are dumb questions - but the manuals are rubbish!

GPS type is configurable manually in TomTom. In your case built-in GPS is pre-set, so no need to do anything. Just open TT and go...
Quickgps is an option to enable you to download the actual positions of satellites as an input for TT. This is not a must, but you may try to examine yourself whether it makes your gps-fix faster or not...

Only the Cost for the internet Service, since Quick GPS downloads Satelite Data from the Internet.
Startt Quick GPS then go to menu/ Options In here set it to remind you when the data expires, and Autodownload when connected to a PC via Active Sync, if you want to avoid GPRS charges make sure Autodownload when data expires is NOT checked.
Set-up as above if you dock your PDA each night to charge it and let Active Sync run the program will auto update, if you are mobile and the data runs out you get the warning and can select to download an update or simply ignore it.
If you have Web and Walk (T-Mobile) then the GPRS charges are not an issue - Mike

I am new to this forum and have recletly purchased a T-Mobile MDA Compact III, My friend has installed the TOMTOM 6 software but for some reason i cant pick up a gps signal.
I have down loaded the "quick GPS" but still not joy.
i have gone to start and setting on on my MC3 and made sure that the com port is 4.
also made sure i have set the it to pick up the internal receiver i,e the built in GPS. not sure what i am doing wrong
please help, ant advise or can you point me in the right direction

Hi, Just recieved an XDA Orbit and i'm wondering which GPS software you think works best on the device. Now i know that most people think that TomTom is the best GPS software but i'm looking for something that works well on the orbit.
I need the GPS software to be able to support postcodes!
So the ones i can think of are:
TomTom 6
Co-poilot
Desinator
Any others? Whats do you think works best.
BTW: I'm in the UK if that makes any difference.

I am using TTN5 and I find it excellent. I have used the TomTom range from the old Routeplanner days and the early versions were flawed, but TTN3 and 5 got their act together and maps were updated. TTN6 did not add any revolutionary functionality and TomTom didn't offer an upgrade price so I have stuck with TTN5 and a subscription to Pocket GPS World to get updated camera and POI downloads.
I use TomTom 6 and in my opinion, its the best out there. Co-Pilot is really good too, got that free with the phone - but just prefer the TTN6.

I use Route66 on my Orbit. Drove 850 miles each way from Boston to Dayton, OH without a hitch. As a matter of fact, it saved me at one point when I was having car problems. Used it to find the nearest Hotel's in the area.

Last I checked iGuidance was incompatible.
I use TT6 works really well, my only problem is that maps are 95% uptodate, which is fine most of the time, but I find in London it doesn't know if a street is now one way, or its now a bus lane, or you cant turn left on Euston Road and have to go into congestion zone and then forget to pay and have to pay the £50 fine

Navigation programs are meant to support you on the road so you don't have to spread a roadmap across your steering wheel and being distracted from traffic, not to replace your eyes, ears and most of all your brain.

I use Destinator 6.1 with Iberia map (when I'm in the mainland, no Madeira maps yet ) and it works OK.
It captures GPS signal almost instantly and it's quite accurate regarding positioning.

Have used TTN5 & TTN6 I prefer TTN5 as it is simple and quick to use. It would be perfect if the maps were spot on but close enough to keep me happy.
May have to use TTN6 when new London congestion charge comes in but its the one I would recommend.

Is that what you're looking for? You will need to supply your own (scanned or digital) maps, but if you have those (or find it in gps-forums): it worked great on my HTC Magician. Haven't installed it to my touch yet, though, so I can't promise it will work, and if you don't have the maps in the right format, it can be a bit of a pain in the ass to get it all right.

I myself use Navigon more so then TOM TOM (I have both installed) only because I like the interface a bit better... and waiting an additional 3 seconds to have the program load or another 3 for a route to load in comparision to Tom Tom isn't that big of a deal for me.
However, that said. TomTom 6 and Navigon both give you the option to choose your method of transport, So you can choose walking route or biking instead of driving a car.
Navigon has these options: Fast Car, Standard Car, Slow Car, Motorbike, Lorry, Bicycle, Pedestrian. Now as far as I know it doesnt have walking paths programmed into it it just uses these settings to give you an estimate on how long till you reach your destination.
Same for Tomtom however it's options are as follows; Fastest Routes, Shortest Routes, Walking Routes, and Bicycle routes. I've never used any of these features so now sure how they really work BUT they are there.
Like I was saying about the load up time between the two, depending on what type of Touch you have will likely make a difference because honestly I've barely noticed a difference as far as route loading times but that could be because I have the touch enhanced so it runs fairly fast.

I'd second Memory Maps, it has worked brillantly for me on a number of WM devices including the touch. It can be a bit pricey for maps, but Memory maps navigator is free and can import and calibrate scanned maps.

Anyone know how to fix the "No maps found!" TomTom error? I'm currently using TomTom 6.203 (7220) with USA/Canada maps version 6.75 (1409). I have the maps folder in my microSD card.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, dos any body know how to fix, you cannot get into settings to look for maps, it just takes you to tomtom download page
Not sure if this will help but I had had the problem on my treo before and I just simply took the map off and brought it back onto the SD card.
I'm also not sure if the placement of the map has anything to do with it but I had originally had it in the TOMTOM folder. When I moved it to the root menu of the SD card it read the map fine.
Right now I'm running Tomtom 6.010 (7720) and my map is "USA and Canada 675_1409'
I found the solution in another thread from kunz:
Disable Bluetooth Explorer from Settings -> Connections -> Bluetooth -> Bluetooth FTP
It causes TomTom to think that the bluetooth folder is your storage card and tries to load map from there. Disabling it should do the trick.

This worked out instantly for me.
You guys may also want to try Navigon Navigator for your phone. I have the latest version 6.2 and it runs super smooth has a way nicer interface then tom tom and has voice control so you can actually just press a button on the phone and say "navigate home" and the program does the route and stuff for you. Its a great feature to use instead of flipping through your favorites or something like that.
I have both tomtom and Navigon on my touch. I use Navigon more however I have noticed that they both sometimes find different routes. On that occasion I noticed tomtoms routes are a little quicker (by say a few minutes... but that could simply be because it calculates the estimated time a bit different) Either way.. something to check out at least. Look up some information on the program and check out screen shots of it. You can tell right away the interface and maps themselves look alot nicer then tomtoms. Both seem to be about the same as far as up to date maps go.

Yes, bluetooth gps. I use GlobalSat BT-359, and I'd like to buy one day "Freedom Keychain GPS SiRF III Receiver" or maybe the small Holux GPS Receiver.
As for software doing maps, there are plenty. I know of: googlemaps, gpstuner, gloposis and sometimes the necessary companion 'gpsgate'. Recently gpstuner got google maps support built in, but I haven't tried (previously one had to build maps oneself for gpstuner).
With a bluetooth gps would it work with garmin maps topo or road maps?
I use GlobalSat BT-359, with Windows Live, along with Microsoft Voice Command 6.1, you can actually tell it where you want to go. The mapping software works fine. The only occasional problem I have, and maybe someone has an answer for this, is it takes a while (5 minutes sometimes), to sync with the GPS "puck". Sometimes closing and reopening the app. several times helps it along. Once in a rare while it will lose the port, as well. I am using port 1. Does anyone have a solution to this? Otherwise, it works great when everything is sync'd.

Why not try the "Igo My way 2006 plus"
Igo My way 2006 plus works great with my Touch and it alerts me on approaching the speed cameras. You should try it out. The maps are much more detailed then on other Gps software i used. If you want to use it and you don't find a trial, plz pm me and i will help.
p.s. you have to own a Bt. Gps receiver.

That software looks pretty cool, but I don't see any mention of maps for US/Canada on their website... Do these exist, or is it just for European users?

GPS is for use with Sat Nav (e.g. TOMTOM or IGO) and does not have any charges applied to it.
GPRS on the other hand is for using the internet over your phone line and does incur Data Charges.

You need to stop using Google and get TomTom or something similar. They don't need internet access, they come with a map of their own.

I think you may be confusing A-GPS with GPRS ...
The HD comes free with google maps, but this is only line so you need to down load maps when needed.
A-GPS is assisted GPS ment to be better at telling you where you are via the mobile network etc...
If you her HD Tweak , you can turn this off so you get just plan GPS.. which woks fab !!..
Tomtom is fab .. 80 pounds from most etellers

I know it has inbuilt gps, i am going to install tomtom, question, when using google maps, the gps seems to "charge me" ie data useage, is there any way around this? free gps etc? sorry bt im new to these wonderful phones
GoogleMaps loads the map you see via GPRS or 3G - so you have traffic and you will be charged for. TomTom or Navigon load the maps from your microSD-card - so ther is no GPRS/3G-traffic and no costs.
GPS will be always free ...
Touchpro with SportyPal
I just did a 1.4 km walk with both a TouchPro and a TouchPro2.
Sportypal is easy to use, so I could upload the exact trips for both phones.
One in my shirtpocket and the other in my TytnII belt.
On the map you can clearly see that the 2 has a much better GPS because it shows more exact the crossing of streets, corners etc.
Could it be because it is just bigger and thus have a larger antenna?
