Semi dead htc universal (vodafone VPA IV) :( - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

Hi All,
Please, help me with my PDA.
I got used htc universal (vodafone VPA IV). He is semi dead. Device has following problems:
1. display is black-and-white (or grey colored)
2. touchscreen doesn't work
3. device was not dissasembled (there are no stickers removed) and has no damage marks
4. while loading, it shows "NO GSM" D 1.13.56 GER
5. Of course, GSM functions aren't working.
6. I can bypass 'please tap screen...' during first mobile win loading (after hard reset) but then I cann't see task bar.
7. Keyboard of device works but, for example, win-key (with windows logo) does not open main menu for me.
8. On the desktop, I can go into time-settings page, user info, messaging, tasks, appointments, wireless settings menu, baterry meny, screen alignment, calendar, contacts.
9. Bluetooth works, wireless - I'am not sure.
10. I can sync PDA with PC, and with activesync browse and change files on PDA.
I think, from this classification, I have Type 1a.
When I tried to flash my device with Universal_Vodafone_11362_WWE_ROM, UNI_QTEK_13077_176_10900_WWE_Ship and HTC_Uni_SIM_Unlock_v1, I got always radio ROM upgrade error: 114 (upgraiding stops at 0%). While using MTTY116, I am getting "level = FF" after task 32, "not allowed" after d2s commands.
I tried already
USB> password 0000000000000000
USB> set 1e 1
USB> erase a0040000 c80000
USB> erase a0cc0000 c80000
USB> erase a1940000 640000
USB> set 1e 0
Click to collapse
Also I tried to flash HTC_Uni_SIM_Unlock_v1 to get superCID (but radio ROM error 114).
Here is my log from usb-monitor (in the process of upgrading and receiving "error 114" message).
What can I do with my device? Will be upgrading using SD card helpfull in this situation or I have no chances?
Thanks for any help.

JasJar rom dump - Boot loader commands.

I have to be frank I did not go very thoughly through all the documents but I would like to share my efforts to dump the rom and perhaps get an advice how to do it.
Trying the traditional way - put the machine in Bootloader (reset plus light plus poser), loding the romupdate or mtty ... while disabling the USb under the Async, typing d2s resulted in un unouthorized command or so.
As per one of our friends recommendation I typed the command : password UNIVERSAL , got a special promt and tried again d2s.. the result is the same - "unauthorized command".
if you know how what are the set of commands/sequense for getting into ADMIN kind of moode or using the password to make the rom dump, please help.
Found this in a diferent thread......
-insert a sd card on your device (128mb SD card),
-press light + power + reset (you will see unlighted screen with some words and number called bootloader)
-connect your device to your PC with the USB cable and disable USB on Active sync
-run MTTY.exe and select USB
-press enter, type d2s and press enter again (that command backups only the ROM in to SD and is the prefered way), or you can type:
d2s 60000000 00800000 8M radio rom
d2s 70000000 00100000 sd a 1M SPL
d2s 70100000 04000000 sd a 64.00 M OS TrueFFS
d2s 74100000 00a00000 sd a 10.00 M extrom DSK2ART00 fatfsd
d2s 74b00000 02c40000 sd a 44.25 M root filesystem TRUEFFS
-when finish (you'll see it by device display) get the SD and insert it to a cards reader
-for to copy the file in SD Card to your PC you have to use NTRW and run it with this command: c:/ntrw read MDAuniv.nb1 x: (x is your card reader so replace with the letter of your card reader and have NTRW in C
-after that you should have in C: a file called MDAuniv.nb1 and you can post it here!
those command dont do anything..
it doenst say Wrong command or anything.
it just doesnt do anything..
god i need an imate wwe rom

hi, i've been trying everything on the internet so far and nothing is working. my universal is not showing any life-signs. the light+power+reset thing doesnt work, nothing comes up, in the drop box on mtty i only have COM1 COM2 and COM3. if i connect to COM1 or COM2 and type something, nothing happens, nothing i type even comes up. if i connect to COM3 i can atleast see what i type but still when i press enter nothing happens. i dont kno what else there is to do. if i hold the 1&2 buttons +reset (only when connected to pc) the screen comes up saying that i should press 0 to reset to factory defaults or x to exit and no matter what i press nothing happens and the light goes off.

Ok, complete indication to *complete* Backup MDA PRO

Please, if someone has MDA PRO with original ROM can use this indications to completely backup it (and upload it to
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Universal/
please!!!)
What you need:
MDA Pro ;-)
USB cable
PC
1 sd card or mmc card (at least 128MB)
MTTY.EXE (you can find it in internet but the version can use usb connection and not only COM connection)
NTRW.EXE (you can find it in internet.this file must to be copied on your pc on C:\ not in other folders)
If you have ActiveSync installed on your PC on ActiveSync connection settings uncheck USB connection
Before connecting your MDA you should bring it into the boot loader mode. This can be done by simultaneously pressing power + camera buttons and at the same time the soft reset button with the stylus.
The password to enter bootloader is UNIVERSAL
insert a BLANK sd-card
Link the usb cable
Run MTTY.EXE and select USB connection
After that a terminal window will popup in that window.
Type (if you want to backup operating system):
d2s 70100000 04000000
or type (if you want to backup extended rom):
d2s 74100000 00a00000
and press enter. Your MDA will start copying the ROM to the sd card. The screen of your MDA will be dark (no light), but you will see it counting up to 100%. When it reaches 100% it will say it is calculating the checksum. Give it some time till its done and it will say checksum ok.
Please note that there are others command to type due to what you want to obtain. They are:
d2s 60000000 00800000 8M radio rom
d2s 70000000 00100000 1M SPL
d2s 70100000 04000000 64.00 M OS TrueFFS
d2s 74100000 00a00000 10.00 M extrom DSK2ART00 fatfsd
d2s 74b00000 02c40000 44.25 M root filesystem TRUEFFS
After finishing the transfer of the German ROM from your MDA to the SD card, put your SD card into an SD card reader connected to your pc. Your pc might pop up a warning message that says your SD Card is not formatted would you like to format? Click No and open a Command prompt (DOS) window.
Change directory to your root directory (cd c:\) and run the command ntrw read German.nb1 x: where x is the drive letter of your sd card. That command will create the ROM Backup file of your German ROM into your C drive root directory by the name of German.nb1. Make sure you keep German.nb1 in a safe place and use a copy of that file for the rest of the procedure. Note that after finishing the copy from your SD card to German.nb1 file ntrw might give you an error, just don’t pay attention to it.

Error message
I have an MDA PRO on Netherlands origional ROM. I am not able to use MTTY.exe to back up my ROM. I follow your procedure with the following exceptions:
1. "Before connecting your MDA you should bring it into the boot loader mode. This can be done by simultaneously pressing power + camera buttons and at the same time the soft reset button with the stylus."
NOTE: Bootloader mode is the dark screen that says "Serial" (unplugged) or "USB" (plugged). I can only access this by using POWER + LIGHT + SOFT RESET.
2. "Run MTTY.EXE and select USB connection. After that a terminal window will popup in that window."
NOTE: Is it necessary after this step to run the command "password UNIVERSAL"?
3. "Type d2s 70100000 04000000"
NOTE: I, as with others, recieve the following error:
USB>d2s
Not allow operation!
USB>d2s 70100000 04000000
Not allow operation!
This final error is where I am stuck. Thanks in advance to anyone who can advise!
I have exactly the same issue as nedbsd.........
Using original Dutch T-Mobile rom:

date: 08/23/05
radio: 1.00.02
protocol: 42.33.P8

Hmm... this isn't working for me either. It looks like the MDA Pro is taking the password but not staying in the right mode.
The transcript from MTTY looks like this:
USB>password UNIVERSAL
HTCSPass.<YHTCEUSB>d2s 70100000 04000000
Not allow operation!
USB>
Which is a bit of a mess. It does seem that this is the right password, however, as if I type in a different password I get an error message:
USB>password BADPASS
HTCSInvalid password.R¿ËPHTCEUSB>
This is from a standard English MDA PRO. Any ideas?

So, no fresh ideas :?:
same problems as above:

looks like OK
then 2ds

really Invalid command-

Well, you are not the only one that finds it strange, there is about a dozen threads allready about people trying to figure out how to make a rom-image from the universal. No succes so far!
The commands published here on the wiki page just don't work.....
Yup, I've already read all the threads forum-wide concerning the efforts people made to get a rom dump, but noone suggested to try with "h". So, I was curious to see what would happen, that's all!
BTW, you can notice yourself that there is something very strange in the result you reported in the other thread:

Broken Radio ROM blocks official O2 rom, MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe fails "error 114"....

Broken Radio ROM blocks official O2 rom, MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe fails "error 114"....
Hello
I hope someone here is able to help me.
I have spent the whole of the last 48 hours (no sleep) trying to fix my O2 XDA Exec. I *believe* that I have tried everything suggested on this forum and on Buzz's site but there is just so much on here now that I may well have missed something.
History:
Over the last few months, my phone has gradually got more inconsistent - dropping calls, refusing to answer calls, losing signal and so on. On Jan 1st, I turned it on and it had lost all my settings - Opera reg code, Wifi encryption, O2 net settings, etc.
I spent the last week with sometimes having network, sometimes not. Finally it just gave up altogether. In Settings>System>Device Info, "Radio Version", "Protocol version" and "IMEI" are all completely blank. When booting, the red text states "No GSM".
Reading around this site it appeared that I should be able to reinstall the radio ROM from the official O2 download however this errored with the Incorrect Country Code error. I have carried out full hard resets and still cannot get any Radio ROM visible. I assume that the lack of IMEI is affecting the official O2 downloads?
Since then, I have tried most variations on this site of ROM installs using MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe suggested in the wiki (with and without entering mtty code: "set 14 0").
Full three-part ROM and radio-only ROM install attempts all fail with the Error 114 "Radio Rom Update Error" (the radio ROM is always attempted first).
The only success I have seen was an update of Bootloader from 1.00 to 1.01 which worked completely perfectly and proved that the PC can indeed connect to the XDA when it feels like it.
After two days of earning no money ( I am self-employed) and no money to spend on support, I wonder if anybody has another suggestion for me?
In case it helps: ROM version: 1.30.107 WWE, ROM date: 04/11/06, ExtROM version: 1.30.162 WWE
All advice welcome
Thanks

I know there was a smiley at the end of your comment, I just can't work out if you are being funny or astute (or both?). Can you explain how reinstalling the non-radio ROMs will help? Would that restore the IMEI?

Thank you for the suggestion, I just tried as you proposed. "Error 114 - Radio ROM Update Error" *sob*!
It's a real shame. It's actually the ideal phone for my needs.

1. Disable Activesync (connection settings -> uncheck "allow USB connections").
2. Put universal in bootloader mode
3. Connect device to computer using USB cable.
4. Start HHD Usb monitor (trial version is OK).
5. File -> New session -> USB Monitor -> Select USB device where your phone is connected -> Check "request view" -> Finish
6. In the upper part there are two tabs: basic and complete. Click on "Complete".
7. Click on MaUpgrade_NoID.exe and start the radio flashing process, if everything went fine you should see all the USB traffic output on USB monitor window.
8. When radio upgrade fails, click on Edit -> Export and Save as type "ANSI Text files".
9. Save the text file and zip it.
10. Attach the output here or upload it to ftp if it's too big.
Only with this we can see exactly why it fails
Good luck!

Radio is corrupted, and device cannot check SecLevel (wait interpreter timeout), it returns default seclevel=FF (unprivileged) and correct CID (O2___001), however when switching to radio bootloader to upgrade the radio, device doesn't answer to any 'rerase' command, that's why the utility gives out flashing after receiving no response to 3 "rerase 0 10000" commands.
Probably this is a bit "crazy", but if it is your last chance... try the following commands in mtty, and try to upgrade the radio again after this:
Code:
USB> password 0000000000000000
USB> set 1e 1
USB> erase a0040000 c80000
USB> erase a0cc0000 c80000
USB> erase a1940000 640000
USB> set 1e 0
Don't do it if you can fix your device by any other means (warranty, service centre, etc...) because I'm not sure if it will work or not

WOW I have the same problem.....
but this commands for mtty...did nothing to my problem.
ERROR 114: RADIO ROM UPDATE ERROR

Is there any way to update the radio rom from SD card??

I attach the USB Monitor log if it proves any use?
I will try and use the official O2 ROMs and see how that goes.
Thanks again for your assistance, I truly appreciate it.

I have been using this phone for 1 week, after that I changed my SIM card with another one called MAGIC-SIM card, (programmable) with 8 SIM numbers.
After that day ALL the **** started!!!!!
I had problems during my dialing the number on phonepad...
when I was trying to make a call... it hang up.
After some soft reset...it didn't ask me for PIN.
After a hard reset.... on boot screen it said NO GSM
and then on antenna icon on the top of the screen the antenna had a little x on the right side.
Then the known problem ERROR 114: RADIO ROM UPDATE ERROR

Sorry but the capture was from the erase commands... not from the failed radio flash... please try to flash 0.0.0.0 radio again and attach the right capture... also make sure activesync is not running when starting the radio upgrade, and if it fails once, run MaUpgradeUtility twice without disconnecting the device from USB.
my friend got the exact same problem with his EXEC, and send it back to O2, they charge him apprx USD500 for mainboard replacement.....(fiuhh.....)

I tried twice with the 0.0.0.0 radio ROM and this time the error has reverted to Error 114 again. With both these attempts, I noticed that the displayed "currently installed" ROM versions were blank - previously I saw the actual on-board version numbers. Not sure if that indicates anything?

Exactly same error as before, radio bootloader is not responding when the RUU sends 'rinfo' and 'rerase' commands to it, then the RUU gives up trying.
You can backup the radio ROM from another device with "d2s 60000000 00800000", and theoretically you should be able to load it into yours by using "L" command... but I'm not experienced with universal bootloader and can't say for sure if this will work and the right commands to do it... so please wait until someone reads this and can help you more than me, or research by yourself if you have the time to do it

someone can help me with mtty???

hi all,
I am trying to make the radio work again using this procedure:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_UpgradeProblems#problem5
but I got a problem and I'd like if someone can help me.
The problem is that I start mtty, I connect the phone in bootloader, I put USB and the I hit twice enter, but the prompt is always CMD>, doesn't change in USB>; I tried many times hitting enter twice, but nothing changes.
How can I do it?
thankyou

Don't work that's not a problem its just the version of mtty you are using, it should still work.
i am going crazy...I am tring the guide step by step, but when I try tu update radio,it get stuck.
I am with NO GSM and NO IMEI in this moment.
please
help me
(maybe on msn messenger or skype this way I can tell my problems directly)
in Mtty try typing:
task 32
you should get level = 0 to say your device is SuperCID if not you could try the SDcard Method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293651&highlight=task+32
thank you markafreeman,
I followed your instruction and I vas able to get level = 0,
but the problem is still that I have Cmd> prompt instead USB.
(can it be a driver problems??)
anyway, I wrote as the guide says:
Cmd> password BsaD5SeoA
Cmd> set 1e 1
Cmd> erase a0040000 c80000
Cmd> erase a0cc0000 c80000
Cmd> erase a1940000 640000
Cmd> set 1e 0
I closed the mtty, restart the PDA on the bootloader again (HERM100, IPL-1.04 Spl-2.10.Olipro) and I sent the official old ROM RUU_Hermes_QTEK_ITA_2.11.258.1_102_6275_1.38.00.10_108_Ship, it starts but get stuck at 13% and then I got on the pc error 262, upgrading error!
I tried twice and it stops always at 13%
UP!!please...somebody give me hope !
I'd probably try the SDcard method I posted earlier at that point.
On some versions of MTTY it shows CMD on some it shows USB, nothing to worry about.
thank you markafreeman:
I tried to do that, but when it start to write radio,it just stops.
thank you drummer10630:
I didn't see any changes in the phones, also if I try with Cmd> prompt
when I go to install RADIO,it stops
Hmmm the other thing I've seen people suggesting with connection problems is on the hermes go to settings and usb to pc and untick the advanceed netowrk option.

the Mtty communicate with my Herm because it replies with the coomands Cmd> info, so now it's not a mtty problem anymore.
I don't know, but maybe, in mtty there is a command that erase everything on the radio and make it ready for a new installation.

I have Htc Universal o2 exe
It was good whe i was using Windows mobile5
Before few days back i have installed new rom to it that is luca16thebig [Diamond Edition] to it but dont know that its only for G3 users mine is G4 after that it was stuck in splash screen then i went in bootloader mode nd try to reset radio by this method
STEP 1
- First disable ActiveSync (File>>> Connection Settings>>> Allow USB Connections. Untick this box)
- Put your Universal into Bootloader mode (Hold down the Power button & Backlight button while performing a soft reset).
- Connect your Universal to your PC via the USB cable.
- Open mtty (I won't bother adding it as an attachment here, it's already been posted on the first page of this thread)
- Close all unessential software including antivirus and others, to ensure you have the maximum amount of RAM available to avoid problems.
- In the "Port" drop down menu select USB (If USB is not available you haven't connected properly. I couldn't get a connection at all when using Windows 7 X64, just stick with XP when flashing your device, there's much less hassle):
STEP 2
- After opening mtty type the following command. Type it directly into the window, do not copy and paste.
Code:
task 28 55aa
Then press ENTER.
If the following text appears then you've done it right:
Code:
Wait ..
DOCInfoTableinitHW +
Binary0 Size: 0x100000
FAT0 Size: 0x4000000
FAT1 Size: 0xA00000
FAT2 Size: 0x2C70000
All Size: 0x7770000
FAT0_ADDR=0x100000,FAT1_ADDR=0x4100000,FAT2_ADDR=0x4B00000
USB>
If this is not the text you get, then start again from the beginning.
STEP 3
Providing that you've completed STEP 2 successfully, continue by typing the following commands into mtty one by one, making sure to hit enter after each one.
Code:
set 14 0
set 14 1
set 14 2
set 14 3
set 14 4
set 14 5
set 14 6
set 14 7
set 14 8
set 14 9
set 14 10
STEP 4
After you have enter all of the commands outlined in STEP 3, continue by entering the final command in mtty.
Code:
task 0
or
Code:
task 7
(I wasn't sure which one to choose, or even if a choice was implied, so I first entered task 7, then hard reset my Uni, put it into bootloader mode again, and repeated steps 1-4, this time entering task 0)
Your Uni's screen should have gone completely blank after that last command. If it has then:
- Close mtty.
- Unplug you Uni from the USB.
- Put it in bootloader mode again.
- Plug the USB cable back in.
STEP 5
Start mtty again and connect to your Uni via USB (as described in STEP 1).
Enter the command:
Code:
shmsg 11
It should report the following information:
Code:
USB> shmsg 11
String format is invalid!
Syntax error!
(The Syntax error! line didn't appear when I performed this procedure)
If you do not get this result, start again from the beginning.
STEP 6
Enter the following command:
Code:
rtask 0
mtty should report the following:
Code:
USB> rtask 0
Radio reset.
USB>
If this was the result you received then unplug your Uni from the USB cable, perform a hard reset (not in the original instructions, but that's what I did), then enter Bootloader mode again.
STEP 7
- Find and download a WM5.0 ROM, remove ms_.nbf and Radio_.nbf, so you're just left with nk.nbf (I used the KDSkamal_Ultimate_Ed ROM, which can be found through Google), and flash it to your device.
- Your Uni may get suck in Bootloader mode after flashing the WM5 ROM. Simply use the ExitBootloader tool.
- At this stage you're Universal should be functioning with a half decent WM5 ROM. Now you can proceed to flash another ROM of your choice in the usual manner. I would heartily suggest Tomal's WM6.5 ROM that can be found here on Xda-Developers, you won't be disappointed! :-D
