I saw an official release of WM6 today.. - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Ok.. so I work for a T-Mobile exclusive dealer here in the US.. the HTC representatives stopped by my store today to ask a few questions about how the dash and the MDA were selling at my store.. after talking and chatting for a while, one of the reps pulls out what they call the "T-mobile Wing" which will be releasing late May.. its a really slim version of the MDA with a nice full rubber keypad.. and best of alll, Windows Mobile 6..
I pulled out my 8525(hermes) and compared the OS's.. Keep in mind, I'm running XDALive v0.20.. the official release is very different than the beta that kypher released. Instead of the task manager being in Settings>Memory.. it's located in the top right corner of the screen where the "X" usually is.. instead of the "X" being there, its an arrow with a drop down menu. from there, you can close one or all of the applications that are running.. it will be something like this:
Activsync [X]
Internet E. [X]
Windows L. [X]
and so on and so on.. pretty cool.
ALSO, there is a bluetooth icon and wifi icon on the today screen, to where you can turn either/or on and off. Which is convenient.
Icons and colors, etc are all the same.. but there are little quirks here and there that make the official release different..

Isn't this just pBar (3rd party task manager) installed on it?

This is the HTCHomeplug today screen plugin.
Both thinks you can put on any existing WM6 (or WM5) rom.

Ahh I see now.. where can we get HTCHomeplug? and Pbar?

@mun_rus: That's the task manager from SBSH iLauncher, which I use myself. Real good one...

That task bar was in one of the roms that we had here (maybe AKU 3.3). except there wasnt the Icon in that area. I found it by accident. I will try to remember which one it was. You had to hold the stylus in the area where the X normally would be with an open application and it would pop-up.

I seriously doubt it.
THAT "wing" is the Universal, and the link you posted from the Reg is from early 2005.
If I had to guess, i'd say that the T-mobile USA "wing" is going to be the VOX.

First.
there may be a new Task Manager in the final Wm6, and a new on Todayscreen Comm manager. among other things. whether it will be HTC developed (likely) or 3rd party software(less likely)
"Neither one may be initial available upon the Herald release but in subsequent rom updates. or for purchase from the Marketplace/Handango." it is unclear. as i understand it MSFT is going to be pushing an integrated software ecosystem a la itunes for phone software cept integrated into the device.
I know that microsoft is really going to push this marketplace thing this year, thats one of the points I got out of the Windows mobile folks @ the vista launch event. we should see a much more organised system for getting software than what we have seen in the past. Im really excited.
Second.
He saw the Herald.
Third.
This thing is going live sometime during/after april
Fourth
Tmobile May not end up with the vox unless the price point gets lower. (I have not heard anything about this device in awhile, it could still be coming) - it doesnt really make sense though since the price point on the dash is so low and the specs r almost the same.
fifth
the HTC wing is a 3g Phone and I have heard nothing about it since it was initial announced.
sixth
I have no idea why im numbering these.

g.baltazar,
Was it something like this one?
HTC Wing:
400MHz Samsung, Windows Mobile 6 Pro, 3G/HSDPA, 2.4"QVGA LCD, ROM 128MB, RAM 64MB, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 1.9-megapixel Camera, 50 x 100 x 19mm, 120g

Or perhaps he saw :gasps: a pre-release engineering version of the... *trembles* could it be??? The... *trembles again* KAISER?!?!?!?!?!?

Extended Rom unlock and Intent cab??

Has anyone been able to figure out how to unlock teh extended rom on the Dash (actually more specifically the s620/excalibur)?
The reason I'm asking is I'm looking for a cab for the intent midlet manager. I'm curious to see if it handles the high mem version of opera mini better than teh default esmertec one does. I'm not patient enough to wait for their "fix" I guess
TIA
there isn't an extended ROM in the smartphone OS.
*BUT*
The high memory version of Opera mini works great on my Dash running the S620 OS.
-K
sweet. does that mean you wanna trade!!
apparently the problem is in the midlet mgr tmo usa bundled, hence the request for intent.
thanks tho

Ah I missed that part. I received teh reply notification while I was in the car. Typed teh reply at a red light
I've debated bewteen installing it or not. Here's my reasons why not:
1) I'm cheap. I don't know if I wanna spend the $40 to unlock.
2) This is the first smartphone I've bought from tmo. I'm still nervous about voiding any warranty. I need to research a bit about being able to either reflash to the stock tmo rom or backing up my rom to a microSD like I did with teh MDA, as well as being able to CID lock my phone again just incase I have problems.
3) I'm coming from an MDA that I've flashed probably 15 different times. Its a slippery slope to Phone geekdom once I start.
We'll see what happens, thanks for the tips tho. (Eliminating xT9 would be nice though...
Reasons to unlock your phone and flash the s620 ROM on it...
1. the original T-Mobile ROM is available so you could always go back.
2. I'd pay T-Mobile 40 bucks if they'd tell me how to at least turn XT9 off permanently!
3. I hate carrier branding.
4. You'll get that good java client you want
5. You know you want to
6. You'll be able to use *ANY* ROM that comes out in the future.

My understnding is the HTC ROM doesnt support teh push and hold feature to get teh alt of each key?? I've really gotten used to that now.
that is correct, no push and hold. The only other thing that is wierd in the s620 ROM is when you're surfing a mobile webpage where you can hit a number for an option instead of highlighting and selecting it, it doesn't work. Typing 7 to delete your hotmail works on the T-Mobile ROM but not the s620 ROM. No idea why.
*BUT*
That XT9 irritated me SO much, I don't care what I lose. Losing XT9 is the best feature of this ROM and my main motivation for doing it. Also, you get the native JOGGR functionality back (which is a little buggy and slower than using the D-PAD but I digress).
It is a very solid ROM and the Intent Java client is a nice bonus.

yup. There is no extended ROM on Smartphones but POF can probably answer better than anyone.
I'm saying there isn't... But I've been wrong before.
-Mc
i think you are!
there is other smartphone with extended roms and to clarify to those who do not know what extended rom is ,when its visible on your device it is a folder with all the applications and carrier settings in it ,that when you hard reset your device they are installed, and one thing is to find how to make it visible with file explorer and another is to unlock it to be able to copy the files some where else ,!!!

WM6 Beta - My thoughts

I installed WM6 last night after CID unlocking my s620 hoping for the excitement that i had when had my HTC Wizard upgraded to PDA VIET's cooked ROM of WM6. I wasn't impressed enough to keep it, so i would like to highlight what i had found, which might repeat what others already know.
WM6 Beta Pros:
1. It is faster, it feels faster
2. New Microsoft Word, Excel edit capabilities
3. Press and hold the key and you will get the symbols instead of pushing the FN key to create !#$% symbols for example
4. All the other frills of WM6
WM6 Beta cons:
1. Because this is a T-Mobile ROM, and I am using it for Rogers, the additional customization for T-mobile is useless to me
2. The joggr has to be reset to use it as scroll instead of the volume function that the DASH uses - Reg edit will fix this
3. For some reason, as noted in another thread, the keyboard search from the home screen doesnt work right. Instead it acts like a phone keypad. For example searching for a name to call - key 2 acts like ABC insetead of E!!
4. SNAPIN issue - will send SMS messages to the UK, costs you international monies - fix is to delete the folder
5. Incompatibilities with Blackberry connect
I went back to WM5 and I will wait for a newer or cooked rom of this. ITs not worth it to me to flip to WM6. Being that i was using WM6 for a long time on my HTC wizard, this version of WM6 is way more inferior on the DASH/s620 than when it was put togetehr for the wizard.
My recommendation is to wait for another release.
While your PROS are legit, I have to disagree with your CONS.
All of the CONS you list are easily fixed with the exception of 3 and 5. Many don't use Blackberry and #3 is one small inconvenience for a leaked ROM IMHO. When you compare it to having Word, Excel, and Power Point, it's a good trade off. #4 is still not entirely fixed by deleting that folder. On Cingular I still get the junk text message when booting my phone. THIS is what ruined it for me. Since I don't know what's causing it, I don't fully trust it.
I also went back to WM5 to be fair. The s620 FW is stable as hell and very fast. I wouldn't use the standard T-Mobile WM6 ROM once it's released due to the crap they are putting on it. I'll wait for a generic like Dopod or HTC before I upgrade again.
Man I liked the native Word and Excel support. I can't wait...
-Mc
To solve the blackberry connect problem check out this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294218&highlight=blackberry+connect
Actually you ahve very valid points, and i agree the stock 405.4 ROM on the S620 is super fast. This is the way i see it.
HTC Wizard
WM5 cooked rom to WM6 cooked rom ==> HUGE IMPROVEMENT
HTC S620
WM5 stock 405.4 rom to WM6 beta ==> Minimal improvement.
THis thread was just to warn that its not really worth a great deal to switch from an already great ROM.

There are easy workarounds for the keypad, and Doc2Go doesn't allow you to edit Office docs (does it?).
of course it does. but office in wm6 does not allow to create new docs.

Yes, please, for the love of God tell us the workaround!
i believe the workaround is to hold down on the keypad and let it cycle through the letters. it really doesn't take very long to get to the letter you need.
not a big deal imo.
Docs To Go is laggy IMHO on my Dash running WM5.

This is not the workaround. For example, we don't want the "4/s" key to represent "I,H,G". This key should just represent "s". This is what a QWERTY keypad is meant for (among other things)!

I guess this may differ since you don't have T-Mobile, but that functionality already exists in my Dash, Windows Mobile 5. I bought it 3 days ago and saw that tip on a site. It definitely helps not having to press the Alt key.

Full Tmobile Wm6!!!!!

I HAVE FULL WM6! NOT BETA! FULL TMOBILE BRANDED WM6 FOR THE DASH!!!
i have good news, and bad news
good: its AMAZING, every issue was solved, i cant get this thing to hang, or find ANY problems, EVERYONE NEEDS TO GET THIS!!!!
bad: it was installed onto my device by HTC, and i have no idea how to get it off, if someone can tell me how to download it so others can use it let me know
very kewl post the rom version radio version ext... that would be great. screenshots would be good too
it LOOKS exactly like the beta, just runs properly, and ALOT faster, and uses less ram, even beter then after removing snapin from the beta version
windows ce 5.2.1236
build 17741.0.2.1
radio version 4.1.13.34_02.79.90
htc messed with your rom? Was it in for service or purchased this way?
why would htc do that?
HTC as a whole dident, i know people, but this person wouldent give me the file, but he did updat my dash
thats cool
did he say if the htc version was ready yet?
i wonder why they are waiting until may 4 if the rom is ready now...
its part of a licence agreement with microsoft, microsoft wont let them release it yet
lol. figures that ms would want to control everything.
maybe it has something to do with live messenger and live update.
can't wait to check it out
Sorry I do not mean to pretend to know more than HTC or the original poster (being sincere here, no sarcasm), but I have an OMAP 2430 with Wm6, with an awful H264 decoder issue that I cant fix. (DSP level error). So unless these guys are using other hardware or DSPs I would expect at least 1 more version... sorry cant say my deadline.

Several questions didn't found yet...

Hello All,
I've been working a few days now with the TP2... wonderfull device... Since i also used the TP and Qtek 9100 this is really great device... i have though some minor things...
1. The size, it's pretty huge... my iPhone 3G is a bit bigger though... but it needs time... Nothing to do about it, just the way it is... ...
2. Another thing is, i have been using the TAB key on the TP external keyboard very often when typing... but the TP2 doesn't have it... I found an .REG update from a person in Norway saying he added FN+T as a TAB function, but that only adds a TAB in space, not jumping to the next field... Anyone any idea how to make a real TAB functionality...?
3. Opera, i've updated Opera to the newest beta, but when restarting the phone it keeps starting Opera... The newer Opera is slower in starting the application, but when running it's faster and more responsive... Also when i uninstall the Opera i installed, the old Opera is not working anymore... So my questions are... Where/how can i disable it (i've been in the registry and HTC's bootloader anywere but no Opera)...? and Where can i get the "pre-installed" CAB file...? So i can reinstall that CAB file...?
4. When using the HTC TouchFlo contacts they are sorted as "firstname lastname". No problem, but when i select the letter at the most right so i can jump to names with that corresponding letter. It jumps to a very not logic point. When i select the letter Z it jups to names starting with D somehow it jumps not far enough. I have the Dutch TP2... Anyone noticed the same...? Or anyone made a solution for it...?
Thanks in advance,
Michiel

i have the same problem too. went to HTC customer care and they were surprised by the issue too. told them to log a case to address this, hopefully they did.
I don't have this issue on mine - the "jumps" on the contact list are flawless.
As to the size, it's only longer and heavier than my Dopod D810 (Trinity) - the TP2 is actually both narrower and thinner, only by a very tiny margin.

I haven't tried it with a shorter contact list, since i have over 400 contacts. Anyway maybe it's just a bug with the Dutch version, maybe THKC can agree on that (don't know if he has the Dutch version too).

Congrats leoni, I would love if you could say about:
- The responsiveness of the screen
- How easy to type using its virtual keyboard (and compare to the iPhone if you have used before)
- And the biggest question, is the voice-to-text included in the virtual keyboard? Probably you may test it on several differents input type. Or it might need to be installed from the HTC apps/widget list?
Thanks!

Nice .. i see that the device is the "Brownish" colour after all
if you could verify wither there is a speech-to-text feature or not, .. you have to change the keyboard to Android keyboard though (if it exists). because the HTC keyboard does not have it by default ..
The Android keyboard is either removed or hidden as the Windows one is on the HD2. Turning off Sense UI doesn't seem possible by clearing data and defaults through the applications menu....Sense just restarts automatically.
I'm pretty sure there is no Speech to Text. I've searched hard to no avail, plus when I installed SMS Popup and pressed the S2T button it said it was not available for this device.

ohh bummer, .. its ok though there is an app for that
thanx for the updates mate, ... keep us posted about your experience with the great Desire .... any glitches/bugs/lag-ness (hopefully not)
EDIT: and also the battery life!
Mine arrived half hr ago, it's on charge and I'm trying it out.
First impression what a dissappointment....only kidding!
It's faster then HD 2, Iphone 3GS and hero had them all and got rid of them all. Very bright and responsive, very fast keyboard definetly the best thus far. that's it for timebeing.
impressed thus far.
In settings there is an option for text to speech you have install voice data which takes you to marketplace.
