[SOLVED] Flashing Service LED - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Well I have searched and searched and can not seem to figure out how to disable the service led without disabling all the functions of ALLledmgr. Of course that works but that means vibration and a number of other things. Someone had mentioned the nled reg entry hack tried that no luck. I have looked through countless dlls and files for any reference that might come close to disabling the service led but I just cant seem to find it. So many other phones(cheap phones) let you disable it why cant this one?
I remember back to a simple hex edit on my motorola that could do many things we even had script files that could change the leds colors etc and do crazy things on boot etc(that was linux of course).
So any of you pros out there came across anything that might be related to the service led?

i love the service LED's if it werent for them i wouldnt like my TyTN as much .. they really mean that much to me
sadly we're not in the good ole' motorola days (that was bliss) but i have the perfect soloution! :
Get a black permanent marker, and colour in the Service LED
et voila!! it no longer flashes and you still have vibrate, sounds etc ...

LOL

That´s was a really tip problem solution !!

Service LED does not bother me at all.

Or gently mash it with a sharp knife or screwdriver. (same solution for that silly light/speaker on cars that warn you to put a seatbelt on)

Maybe I wasnt clear about what I wanted. When I meant service led I meant that it just constantly flashes green to tell you that you have a signal. I want my leds to work, but the way I want them to. I want them to flash when I have a missed call or unread message etc. I just do not want it to constantly flash green in a service area Im always in a service area.
Many of you laugh of course and say it doesnt bother you etc. But I bet that when it is figured out where and how it is access and then being able to customize it change its colors etc, those who laugh will also be among the people using those nifty custom leds(blue for bluetooth, green for message, orange for missed call etc. So try and support the idea instead of laughing at it.
For me seeing that green flash over and over is just a constant reminder of something I can not customize on my super customized phone.

Wow the attatched file actually worked! Still maintain all other functions with only the service led disabled. Im going to start ripping it apart and see if I can come up with anything new.
Thanks much for finding it, making it, or whatever, hats off to you.

that one was too early. it has a bug when charging. i have a 3.1 version that reads if the charger is on and works better. if you want it let me know.

Please do post the 3.1 verison and thanks

The first one you posted seems to e 3.0 the second 2.1, ill try it to see whats the difference but 3.0 works fine even when charging except it gives you a flashing orange led instead of constant on led, letting it charge to full and see what happens. Yes please post any versions you have so I can try to see the different modifications they are doing between them.
I can see that it is simply using a mort script to scan the notification que for changes and using the treo exe to make modifications. Im in the process of decompiling the treo exe to see what mods can be made.
My concern here(which may be a retarded one so small) that you have a fight going on with the phone constantly telling it to do one thing and the mortscript and treo exe telling it to do something else. I can see that mortscript is using about 3%cpu cycle every 5 seconds or so. Not sure if that is going to impact battery usage or not, but my end goal would be do away with the fighting and just having the os do what its supposed to do.

I would like to request that anyone who likes or uses this app please stop by thier forums and send a thank you. After reading through all the threads they put alot of time and effort to make it work. And although it was not designed for our phones by chance it works. I have already sent my thank yous and hope more will do the same.

@psiodon: Did you do any "re-work" on it? If yes, could u please attach here so everybody can benefit?
Thanks
Chris

No I have not done anything at all since it is already functional, what I am currently looking into is the other three leds that we have and what can done with them. Im also trying to figure out more info on our leds, if they are only tri color, etc and if its possible to get our two green and red phone leds blinking as a notification as well, but I am pretty sure those two leds are controlled together as on or off and probably cannot be controlled individually, time will tell.
Psiodon

Did this work on HTC Artemis (o2 Orbit) too?

Thank you!
Just a quick note of thanks to CodyPPC for the link!
That damned service light has been annoying me for months - I've taken to putting the phone in a draw / turning it upside down to stop the flashing annoying me when trying to get to sleep in an otherwise totally dark room!
This was the 1st site to come up on a google search - and am really impressed - cheers!
I'll send thanks to the devs on the other forum as well.
It looks like you're looking to enhance/fiddle with this further - controlling the LED's in various ways - - have you made any progress? are you in a position to share any code (compiled/source) or tips? I just want to dabble - have no real goal in mind - -- - the main thing is no more flashing green!!! woo!

Battery icon with numbers, and 1% fix - tilt 2

I have looked around for a fix that will show the battery level in 1% increments....but nobody will confirm whether this works for the tilt 2 without causing problems. Should I just assume that if something works with WM6.1 it will work with 6.5?
Also, it is so stupid to not have a better battery icon...is there a way to replace it with one that actually shows a freaking number? I don't want anything fancy, and I don't want to install a pack that replaces ALL my icons. Anyone?
EDIT:
Just thought of this. Does anyone know how to change the colors on the top start bar, and bottom start bar in tf3d? I was thinking of wanting them both transparent, but that might make the stop icons hard to see....maybe just the bottom tranparent.....hell, I guess I could pick a dark background and make them both tranparent.
Anyway....anyone?
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-ariel-battery-monitor-v1-6-2.html maybe this would help? i've used it and it doesn't replace any icons. it stays at the top bar. you can move it to cover the battery area or just leave it by the start logo

Not really in interested in flashing a whole new ROM just for this. The ROMS are nice, but none of them are 100% perfect....I don't want to deal with radio's....I don't want to deal with some of my keyboard buttons not working...I don't want to deal with getting some strange ATT registry setting back just so x or y program will run right.
The phone runs great now...just want a couple tweaks, not a full overhaul.

I probably went overboard....but if he would have read the posts he would have seen that we were discussing this in depth already. It would be like me walking into a white house press conference on the state of the economy and saying "hey...uhhh..maybe someone should try to fix it and stuff"
As for me ignoring the 2 suggestions.
1. I thanked the first guy but RESPECTFULLY mentioned that this was more of a work-around and not a fix. I also posted a fix to the first part of my problem in case he, or anyone else, was interested....not sure how that is supposed to show i ignored him.
2. The second suggestion was to a thread that the head guy didn't seem to updating anymore, which the poster stated up front as he gave me the link. I thanked him as well...and agreed that the thread did not have a solution for this issue...was never a **** to him.
Anyway.....I'm sorry, I shouldn't have reacted like that...I know he was only trying to help.
Back to the topic at hand. It appears the hold up on the 1% driver is that people are having an issue pulling the proper files from the tilt2's because of write protection or something......so looks like this is in limbo while people smarter than me attempt to help the rest of us.
Hi:
I installed the attached cab driver, and it seemed to work fine for me, with no side effects.
I found it with one of the Brian taskbars (gfreek edition), which by the way looked amazing, but the signal icon didn't get replaced with the new one.
Hope this helps

The fix you posted is for when the notification manager and the battery icon show values that are 1% away from each other. This thread is about a different issue, namely getting a 1% driver that works on the stock Tilt2 ROM. Thanks for the fix though; I think I have that problem also. I once saw my notification say 0% (when the battery driver was rejected) while the icon showed 1%.

I am sick of all these ROMs

I guess what I mean to say I am sick of all these problems, with both stock and cooked roms, I just want a phone that works smoothly.
What I wouldn't give for ANY ROM that is reliable.
I have tried ROM after ROM, and I still have not found even one that is truly reliable. The stock ROMs, or ones close to stock are maybe better but not OK.
I am so sick of the slow HTC messenging client (I have tried the fix to disable it, but that doesn't work)
Even the regular windows messenging freezes.
In fact the phone seems to have a lot of fun freezing up all the time. It usually unfreezes after a while, but why would I want a phone that I have to wait 5 minutes for before I can do anything?
All I want is 1 reliable ROM. It doesn't have to be lightning fast, just something that doesn't waste my time.
It would also be nice to have something with a bit of cool graphics in it too, but that is not important.
I have read online about a lot of people having the same problems. Why can't we seem to fix this? I have a lot of faith in Xda-developers, so I know this can be done.
try cooking your own then maybe you'll see how hard it is to make a reliable rom. :|
Yeah, I don't mean to give any offense to the chefs, as I thank them for their effort, but I think the problem is deeper than that.
I just want to know what I can do? Or maybe how can I help to discover the root cause of these problems?
you know...i dont think its the ROMs...
honestly i think it's because the stuff that's on the phone (whether its a stock ROM or a cooked one)
it NEEDS more memory...
thats what i think at least...
well how can one build a ROM that is snappy and reliable?
Its not the RAM, its the Qualcrap MSM7200 processor. Same processor for 3 generations. Thats why.
Check my signature & words of Gandhi Ji, you will understand why we fail. Our greed always outgrows our technological developments & what we are left with in the end is nothing but frustration.

Kind of same feelings here. I have been using modified ROMS and now I realized that some of my text messages don't go through to people. This is kind of bad because I already fired one person from our company because there was misunderstanding cause she never received the message but I didn't believe her cause I got confirmation from the operator that she got the msg
and JUST now the phone just suddenly went blank and now it says that has to reset the device completely. I didn't even touch the phone I just noticed that it had lost the wallpaper suddenly and then tried to reinstall the wallpaper didn't work. Then reset and the phone didn't get on anymore
Luckily after some waiting the screen came and said I can reset the device. Now has to reinstall everything again. Fuuuuck. Would have other things to do than this..

Maybe we should start a quest to find that one ultimate ROM that makes this thing into a phone we can rely on.
I bought this phone because I use all of it's features heavily, I text and email and call and view documents, and surf the web and listen to music and watch videos and more constantly on this thing.
For it to be unreliable negates all the good functions it has.
How about we all work on finding/testing one ROM that is priority #1 Reliable?

lol...seems kind of a self defeating goal. Can there be anything such as the one perfect Rom when we each have our individual preferences and priorities? Also, we have to factor in the reality that the networks themselves are not reliable. So, if ATnT or Verizon drops calls and text messages, can we really say it is the Rom that is unreliable?

I was thinking of making one that can be the basis ROM from which all others are birthed. Or at least find what formula or tricks we could apply to make the ROMs better?
lawlz. Good Luck finding the 100% perfect rom.
If you look at each rom's thread, each new rom they release more likely has a new OS build. Then each new build has their own issues, either from previous version or new issue entirely.
IF the rom the chefs release is just plain unusable, they normally release a FIXED rom with the same build.
Known issues are just that, chefs normally don't fix them because they just can't. So hoping for a new build of the software might fix it.
Each of the roms' issues can be fixed with patches, there are general patches that can be found all over or a patch by the chef when they sometimes forget to fix an issue unique to their rom.
From what i've been noticing, no chefs has cooked up the same rom more than 5 times to fix some issues until it is 100% perfect. By the time they do that, there's a new build of the software and they'll be cooking that instead. Not only just the OS build, they'll also add/remove some programs, change programs to newer versions.
All of these combined will introduce new issues.
Then the cycle continues...
There's about 20 or more Rom selection out there that you can choose from. There's gotta be one that is close to your preferences.
A rom that is deemed 100% reliable to others may not be the same to you.

Perhaps then we should deem what is reliable. Firstly, 100%, I know, is too much to ask for, but I want as close as I can get.
So reliability to me means: I can use the phone as it was meant to be used.
This means: no freezing, no need to reset constantly, when someone calls me I can see the caller ID, etc
Simple and easy.
Now is that too much to ask for?

Well there are Roms that are really reliable and very fast. I'm using the same custom ROM for a long time now... I never had to reset, no freezing. It just works.
It's more stable then stock even. Just search in the first 3 pages of the rom thread for the touch x roms.
So no it's not to much to ask. I think this thread should be closed because it's only about whining. Nothing constructive.
EDIT: and that's not the only ROM that is stable. And let me remind you that al cooks are doing it for fun and free willing. As end user you can't complain. You have no right. Asking and making requests is fine, but I'm getting sick of people saying nobody is listening or will respond on questions asked multiple times and awnsered multiple times. The same is for people screaming other people don't make them what they want while they have to knowledge about the subject at all.
This is not ment offensive in any way to anyone.

Well, as I said in the first few post, it is not the fault of the chefs, and I appreciate greatly all their efforts. I never complained about the chefs and their ROMS, it is the system itself. Perhaps I am asking Windows Mobile to be better.
It think it boils down to Microsoft building a system that is not up to par, then HTC trying to hack on their software which creates a system that is is inherently flawed.
I fully support and am grateful for all the custom ROMs out there. At least it gives us more interesting choices.

Can the white letters when booting android be hidden in a way other than kernel?

With past experience with Android on the HD2 I noticed the white letters on boot dissapear when I switched the latest kernels, is there another way of doing this? An image or zip file? I can replace bootanimation.zip from /system/media and I get the new one, but how do I hide the white letters of linux booting? Or is that a new HARET they were replacing?
Thanks.

Will there be an option in the port to keep view that text if you like? An escape sequence, so to speak? I personally like watching it and seeing what's going on. Sometimes it's the quickest, easiest way to find a problem.

Hence the reason it's left in at the moment... we need it for debugging. Same reason the LED is used to indicate sleep/wake status.
Anyhoo, I can't really speak to whether or not we'll be able to enable and disable the flying text. Assuming the project is 'stable' and people are just pumping out builds instead of kernels... I would imagine there would be no need for the text to be shown whatsoever - if there's nothing wrong, there's nothing to troubleshoot
Perhaps there's a startup.txt option, or there will be kernels with debugging enabled. Not sure, these are just guesses of what could happen. No clue what will actually be implemented when that day comes.

Yes, I agree with you that it's needed, BUT I am just asking if there is a way to get rid of it and not by kernel way... Like a Haret option maybe?

The Ticker...

Hi Everyone!
I just picked up a Samsung Continuum last night. Actually returned my Droid X for this phone. The allure of cracking the Ticker was too much for me to handle any longer.
So with that said, has anyone been able to find out any information on developing stuff for the ticker? I know Samsung has not released any official APIs for using it. I'm assuming, however, that the drivers and some source code for using it has been released with the OS source code.
Is this a true assumption? If so has anyone started looking into how we can take advantage of it? I'm not a ROM developer so I'm hoping I can find ways into the API with the stock ROM.
Any advice and or pointers anyone can offer (especially if you've already been looking into it!) would be greatly helpful for me. As I said, the whole reason I got this phone was to hack the ticker. I can see so many incredible uses for it that I must find a way to take advantage of it!
Thanks in advance!
Oh, and this is my first post so Hi
Honestly i have no idea what so ever.
But i really hope we can do something. I bet there is some sweet stuff the right person can do with the ticker.
We currently have one dev (who doesn't have a Continuum) and a handful of testers working on getting Odin, Clockwork Recovery, and a Ported version of CyanogenMod going. No other devs or work that I know of..... Future looks bright though...
Thank you both for the replies!
I've spent a few hours looking into the source and dedexing some files off my Continuum. Made some progress, I think. I've spent my time looking over the TickerHistory service (the activity that gets launched when you click the up/down arrow in the right side of the ticker).
I'm trying to track down what actually happens when you click the Refresh button on that screen. I know when I press it my ticker updates but I'm not sure if that's controlled by the TickerHistory or something else. That's what I'm hoping to find out.
I wish I could see LogCat outputs but the Continuum is not being picked up by this computer. I will have to wait until I'm around my development machine. In the mean time I'm going to start playing with Titanium Backup. Going to freeze a bunch of services and see if any of them cause the ticker to stop working. That should help get me some more focused direction
I'll keep ya'll posted!

People have been known to call me that =)
I only wish I had a better knowledge of C/C++ (Unfortunately I work in a MS/Java/Adobe world) so I could help with the ROM cooking. I figured attempting to crack the ticker would be a good first step into the Android modding world =)
Well, it's nice to see we might have another Dev! Welcome to the forums!
ticker
Hey I been testing the the developers code and he had me dump the file attached. See if it helps.

Logan
Thanks for the dump Logan!
I've learned a few things since I've been home. Nothing major but the new information should help point us in the right direction.
No matter what service I freeze in Titanium the ticker continues to get updates. This could mean many things. Maybe the service is hidden, maybe there isn't a service. Who knows right now. This is really what we're looking for.
Disabling some applications makes the ticker not work when clicking an item.
For example, disabling SNS Provider makes it so it can't launch email when clicking on the email icon
TickerRootView is what LogCat displays as a Tag when interacting with the ticker (ie: swiping left to right)
TickerStandbyView is what LogCat displays as a Tag when, well, the ticker goes into StandBy
Disabling a service, sending a test email, re-enabling the service is not a fun process when you have over 100 items to test
As I said, nothing major has been learned yet but this information should help to keep pointing us in the right direction. Will keep playing and will hopefully have more updates by the end of the night
The ticker easily has the most potential for customization as far as development for this phone is concerned. I'm glad you've chosen it as your starting point. Many thanks for your hard work to come.

Editing out my previous message I had here -
Semi-decent break through.
Ticker code lives inside the services.jar file. com.android.server.ticker.*
Now to see where I can go from here =)
Just my little wish list:
Ability to set update interval
Ability to put 4x1 widgets in the ticker
Oh, and, someone else suggested being able to drop the dock down there, to free up screen space.

Changing the update frequency may be fairly simple. Need to test a few things with that.
I'm still looking into how we can get a custom View down there. The neat thing is it's just a ViewFlipper rendering Views, both Java coded and XML declared.

I purchased my Continuum for the very same reasons. I see this baby as being one helluva phone once we wash all of the 'whiz off of it!
As odd as it sounds, I am just as interested in cracking the soft buttons just as much as the ticker. The screen being physically a 480 x 992 display with rationed space for the buttons and ticker, I'd like to go about changing the buttons. Maybe make them bigger or in a different order, or have them change depending on mode or activity. Or rotate with the orientation of the phone! Perhaps a subtle pulsing of a button to indicate a notification while the phone is timed-out.
I feel that when the phone is figured out, we'll have a damn impressive device in our hands. A developer's dream.

I'd like to see the Pandora menu down there when it's opened. Can't believe Samsung didn't already do this.

That's a fine example of a 4x1 widget we could put down there... I would like to see Tweetdeck as well, but we don't have to agree on which ones if we just get the widget functionality....
Viva la devs!!!

The icons for the ticker (like the music player and the weather widget and etc) and the soft keys are in framework-res.apk just in case someone didn't know I just can't find am appropriate way to sign the apk back up once you unpack it so that the phone doesn't reject it xP lol

No progress to speak of today, unfortunately. Still trying to figure out if it's possible to add our own views to the ticker. Quite honestly, I'm not all that optimistic. At least not with having the ability to do it without requiring a custom SOMETHING (services.jar, ROM, etc).
The reason I say this is it looks like all the widgets are hard coded into the Ticker code. That may or may not be a bad thing. If I can find out where those widgets are added we may be able to tap into it.
I've also started looking into changing the update frequency for the facebook/twitter/myspace ticker widget. If I could figure out how to get the /data/data folder off my phone it would be super helpful. I guess I don't know ADB well enough. Even though I'm rooted every time I do an adb pull /data/data /usr/development/continuum/data I get a permission denied error. I know it's possible but for some reason I'm struggling with it, lol.
Will keep ya'll posted! I'll start looking into the "button bar" as well. See if I can come up with anything there.
I've been looking into the services that the ticker depends on for its feeds, and widgets, and it's all very interesting to me. I'm definitely going to be diving into this once I get clockwork up and running for everyone. Stay in touch and maybe we could co-op this one. (;

[Q] Trackpad Pulse Frequency

Just wondering, but is there any way to increase the pulsing speed of the trackpad LED?
A lot of people have suggested LedMe Know but it doesn't have support for Google Voice (which I use for sms) and it flashes the trackpad, rather than pulses.
I've also tried Light Flow and although it pulses the trackpad and supports Voice, it doesn't change the speed of the pulse
Any suggestions?
Have you tried playing with the custom timing settings in Led me know?
If gvoice isn't supported, then perhaps it wont work....sry if it doesn't.
Well, like I said up top, it only flashes the led, instead of the pulses, regardless of any speed settings.
Plus no Google Voice in LedMe Know. Light Flow does support it (so its definately possible ), but it does not alter the pulse frequency so it doesn't add anything that stock didn't already do.

Maybe you could contact the app developers and get them to add the feature(s)?
Some can be surprisingly responsive.
Good suggestion...but not quite the solution I'm looking for since LedMe flashes rather than pulses and I'd prefer if I didn't have to keep an app in memory just to change the frequency of a stock feature :/
Maybe there's a way to modify the lights.vision.so or something?
EDIT: I doubt the developer would try his hand at pulsing rather than flashing since it seems I'm just a minority who prefers the trackpad led rather than the speaker led. Also this seems like a device specific feature and the dev says in the app description: "only available at the moment for htc desire 2.2" so I doubt he has a DZ to test on... I found
EDIT2: I found exactly what I was looking for (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5609688&postcount=25) but sadly its only for Nexus One. I'm messaging the developer to see if maybe he'd port it over...

Yeah I dont know much about editing those files, but some app devs are helpful. It might actually just be a quick edit for them to gain compatibility with GVoice.
I only use LED me know to flash my trackpad light really fast, upon arrival of sms' through tmobile carrier/handcent tho.
I hope you figure something out. I would like like it to pulse fast rather then just blink.

Switch to an MIUI rom. It has the feature built in.
I appreciate pulsing the trackpad LED as well. However it's too slow a pulse at default speed, to be able to quickly peek at your phone and be able to tell if you have a message or not.
xREVOx: What exactly is this feature called? I want to look around and see if it will be included in the net CyanogenMod version.

I'm not using the MIUI rom right now, but it was called either Pulse Frequency or Pulse Delay. Default is 9 seconds. You can change it to as little as a 1 second delay.
I might have to flash it just to check it out and see how it works.
Currently I have LED me know flash my trackpad at 100 milisec. on and 100 milisec. off. Flashes fast and I notice it right away when checking for messages.
I just rather have the pulsing close to that speed.
Well I guess its nice to know that there's an actual solution... I wonder how hard it is to extract from miui rom?
I was looking around for the source of miui, but apparently its not released by their dev team...?

You could try just flashing the exact file that controls it to your phone, from the MIUI rom... not sure exactly what it is though.

I believe its in Settings? I saw a video of MIUI running on a G2 and Trackpad Settings was in the Settings menu...not sure if it contains the pulse frequency but meh. If it is, I don't think it'll be too smart to flash it but idk.
