Where have all the good cooks went? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

I am a newbie here, just joint the community not too long ago. However noted that all the good cooks went missing? Previously, every month there be a number of new roms being released? However, lately not much of new roms being released? Where have all the good cook went? Will here be a 'ghost' town especially with the forthcoming Kaiser?
Just my 2 cents of opinion?

Oooh, you'll catch hell for that one...

I think with WM6 being released, it has taken the punch out of some of the cooks fun\obsession. Also there has been several good kitchens released that allow for just about anybody to cook their own rom just how they want it. Check out the Pandora thread it's great!

I hope they reappear for the Kaiser.

Pff...What the hell are you doing here on this forum, if you think most of us dont live a normal life, like we are all nerds or people with no life.. because most of us like to modify our phone..
Look in the miror, you will see the person with no life..

Bro Bram87,
Please don't start flamming over here.... just a discussion wil do. Everyone here loves their Hermes!

waiting for wm7...

The real reason is that the production WM6 release is very stable & fast

Some cooks are still here... We still have some Betas... That means LIFE

Err i think the cooks are here, its just all the roms out there dont really need any improvement now?
if you try a few of the latest ones, you will see you'll have very little rom related issues, so no need, to cook, and improve the roms!

fil,
Yes I do agree, the current batch of roms are very stable and fast. But however, I do find that a cook is always a cook, whereby the perfection will never take place, always challenging till the end!
my 2 cents of opinion...

Pardon me?
I'll agree with the others... it's getting pretty difficult to improve on the Hermes ROM at this point. Working on it, though.

Aside from the facts that there are some excellent chefs still in the hermes kitchen, that the roms are probably near completition for WM6 etc - I think what drove a lot of the cooks away was a combination of the constant flaming that seems to go on in the Hermes forums - I typically find most of it pretty funny but reading through some of the other forums I am always surprised how there is nowhere near as much flaming going on. That and I think they got sick of people complaining there rom broke this or that when it was something stupid the person did and didn't follow the instructions or do a simple search for the solution. I could easily see how that could put somebody off of releasing to the public something they worked so hard to make.
Regardless of all that, there are some great chefs about - VP3g, Schapps, Duttythroy, Dutty (I think still puts out roms), JasJamming (though he doesn't realse them here any more - somebody usually post a link when he does). If I forgot to mention you or butchered the spelling of your name - sorry - not intentional

I think the cooks on here are doing an excellent job! the problem is Microsoft now is starting to do some sh** right and making a fast rom for our phone. I've tried every rom on xda that I could find at least once to test them. It's just getting harder for the cooks to cook better roms when they are working with the software that is released and taking their time to help us.
Just remember its like the military the stuff they've have for 10 years is just new to citizens. its kinda similar with wm6 just give em time and until then enjoy the awesome roms that we have!!!!
.... or you could build your own if your that risky.

Merging ROM's

Hello,
I know many of those "rom-cookers" whant to realise their "own" rom, but at the moment there are so many cooked roms... so no one know which is the right (newest, fastest, most stable, most features etc.).
Wouldn't it be intelligent to work all together on one "xda-rom"... perhaps we can reache a better, and faster development if we all work together on one "XDA-Developers-ROM".

yes and no... because we all have our own different opinions...
there are really only 3 different ROMS...
Black 2.5 has its own source
Dutty v2 has his own source
lsvw has its own source
where is the Custell 1.2 was derived from the Dopod leaked beta ROM which has a few HSDPA issues and an older source ROM
xda-live is based on the original vinalla ROM that was leaked months ago...

thats why no one has reported them... Honestly if you don't have anything good to say keep your ****ing mouth shut seeing no one asked for your opinion in the first place.
So, meaning to say, we can safely test only Black, Dutty, and LSVW, to see which one is better?...I understand it is a matter of preference, but some rom doesn't have what the other have...
Anyway, it is more fun to test and sort out all problem with all the roms, but sometimes, when they all realeased just about the same time... you have to pick one. Currently I'm on Black v2.5 from Dutty v1....

Dude sorry but there was no need for that kind of reaction, the whole point behind cooked roms is that they are not perfect, ive had to make MANY MANY ammends to my guides site because of mistakes etc... walshy was providing informative answers to the OP, you have already provided two new versions of CUSTEL WM6 (1.1 and 1.2) so why go ape**** when somebody points out another fault???!
Uhhh... I think the reason(s) for some of the chefs not wanting to collaborate might have just revealed themselves.

pulling forces to create a better rom would be the logical thing to do, but i guess theres too many "creative differences" between each chef. as well as too many fanboys and haters for each flavour.

what about building an application that merges a rom from selectable "blocks"... so evry user can merge his own rom out of standard-parts (base + packagex + packagey etc).
many of those roms have greate performance but are overloaded with apps no one needs.
with a possibility to build an own rom by simply selecting some packages everyone can realise his own ideas and we all can work together on those standard packages.
perhaps an online-directory for those packaes would by cool (like installaling software on linux)... at the moment it is realy hard to find al thos packages in thier newest version
Don't worry about it too much - eventually, the aformentioned fanboys and haters will go away, fascinated with their next new shiny toy leaving behind those of us who are genuinely interested in the technology and the device and taking the whole thing forward.

This is completely wrong. I have used and tested all of the ROMs. Yes. They do have a few select programs added to each of them. No. They are not overloaded!!! It is storage memory which is mostly empty. The add-ons if you were to actually look are very small. The only slightly bigger app would be any PDF viewer added. And that is still no biggy. A merged ROM---hmm well---who cares. A none FAULTLY ROM ---hmm well ---Thats what im all for!!! Peace

im with you on that one... mod lock the thread
simply put u cant merge roms because there are people that enjoy the cingular versions people that enjoy the dopod versions people that enjoy certiain features that dont pertain to others. It would be a nice concept but where dealing with roms which include many variations of options and mods that cater to those who benefit from it. So in essense there can be no one rom for anyone thats why even providers have different versions for diff markets. Its just no possible to have one version .Not with different providers and programs etc.
And i wouldnt bash any of the cookers out there because there doing a hell of a job some of there roms are almost close to being a OEM rom . I mean seriously there beating the microsft at there own game . These wm6 roms are fantastic . So why hate when your not contributing to the people as they are. Breaking down roms etc is fine but hoenslt ythe majority of us dont care where they come from we just reap the results from the cookers work and effort. I believe that it really imature to try to bash or disparage people that are apart of the whole opensource game. I mean there doing this for us ya know. And it takes hella time to do what they do something that the people talking trash do not put the time and effort to do.
Just before the threa gets locked I'djust like to re-iterate that we all have our own opinions on what makes a good rom so you'll never get one XDA ROM to suit everyone. Just look at Dutty - he releases 3 in one go as some like it clean, others with tools etc.
Let's all just be grateful for what we get and work together to solve the main, common issues that affect WM6 as a whole.

best cooked wm6 rom poll at&t 8525

just seeing what every body things of all these cooked wm6 roms and whats ranks the highest on here for a At&T 8525...
my vote goes for VP3G's v2.0
I thought you said "poll"
Interesting - you've started a poll without actually including the poll! That's the sort of thing I'd do!!
My vote is currently going to vp3G's ROM, with Slueth255 a very close second. The only reason for that way round is vp3G's applications are closer to my "normal" set than Slueth's - that's it!
P.S. I'm sure you're going to get flamed to death as this question has been asked SO many times before. Still thought it was worth answering though as ROMs change so quickly so my answer does too.
I flashed my new 8525 to VP's rom on friday night and haven't had any real problems yet.
I love it, works nice and fast.

And that never made sense to me either.
We all here at xda-developers know the 'dramas' behind some of the past friction between some of you talented cooks. We saw the heat from misunderstandings; whether it was regarding donations, or taking work - only releasing or supporting Roms to another site. What's the big deal? I thought this was a hobby. I don't want to start listing names of all the talent who contribute (which would obviously include you, JJ, and Austin) but all, including the cooks benefit. So if someone wanted to move to another forum to self moderate, why would we not want to make all choices we are aware of available for vote.

red no doubt...
So, back to topic.
I think 'Best' is relative and subjective.
What's best for one person may not be for another.
I lean toward the 'Lite' or 'Stripped'
another may lean toward 'carrier optimized'
Try it, if it works, it's the 'Best' for you.
One hint however, not a rule; if a cook cooks in carrier bloat, the same carrier as you and he uses, and you like the bloat, it's very likely their carrier specific Roms will be the best for you.

vp3G's 3.62.3. I've occasionally loaded new ones as they are released but it all goes back to vp3G for my personal preferences of stability of the apps included, available RAM (before I install my own apps), and overall "look & feel" of his ROMs.
However, I am looking forward to the upcoming release of Schaps ROM with WM 6.1. I think his roms are top notch as well.

Just as a few examples of all the other people who asked the same sort of question.
The simple answer? The best ROM is the one that you like best. There's no right answer. But make sure you do your research first - if you go flashing them without doing HardSPL, then you might end up with a nice new shiny paperweight.
There's a list of some of the ROMs at the wiki, where your journey should have begun. There's also some excellent guides over at MrVanx's site.
(In another note... when are people going to do their research? :-/)
Be thankful I wrote this before everyone else tears your head off...
"The simple answer? The best ROM is the one that you like best."
What if this guy is evil and considers the best ROM to be the one that you like the least?
for me i cant sem to decide. Ive had em all, well a lot of of em anyway. I keep switching back and forth. But yeah definately read read read. Some do run a bit faster than other been when it comes down to it, its gonna be personal liking. Good luck
i would like some more articles on these roms... with pro's and cons and just what they are more focusing on... that way readers can pick of off some lists or specs... but that isnt always clear or easy to find.
Good documentation and or reviews of roms is what is needed, for the new person or for ppl who simply want to try a different rom, ya for the advanced users who have tried almost all it doesnt help but for rest of us I can see already that nauturally most of the authers are going to be biased to some way with there roms.. and this should be documented and then the right readers/users will be targeted much better thus more ppl that are too

Likes/dislikes, reviews, and comparisons for each ROM can be found in the threads dedicated to those ROMs. Simply read what every who has replied has to say about it.
yes that is one way, and very unreliable way and painfully slow way... reading through all of it...
what has to be done is a contest between individuals who write reviews/articles... then people can vote based on how they feel for that review... after the winner... other suggestions or ideas are compiled from the other articles into wiki...
there you go one centralized idea/view by the majority vote
updates have to be added from time to time.. with solutions or new bugs and features...
do you know how many threads would be reduced if something like this was incorporated?
I prefer vp3G's ROMs.

A "contest" is unnecessary, and a list of suggestions/ideas would be just as hard to wade through.
As the Hermes is nearing the end of its development cycle, this will be a moot point soon. But if you want to put something together, the best idea would be a review website. Instead of saying which is better, just list all of the features that each ROM has, along with screenshots and metrics on battery life and speed. Then people can decide on their own which is better.
vp3g's rom is the best.. but thats cause im partial to ATT

Yes, it is slow. But flashing a Hermes ROM is not something you rush. Always do your homework.
I disagree on the unreliable part, however. Its like when software is developed, they dont have ONE person test it, because bugs, etc. can be overlooked easily. They have MANY testers. The replies to the threads are from the, if you will, testers of the ROM. They report good and bad. I don't know any better way, besides trying for yourself. I personally research tho.

@Admins, Banish me if you will for this post, but i think it has to be said...
All rom cookers do a great job (i my self use a rom made from them for my Hermes).
But i wonder if it would be better to create much less frequent but also much more stable and bug-less roms.
I can not stop feeling i enter a super market when ever i visit this forum, where you have a multitude of the same products only with a different label, and company's try to sell them as innovative new ones.

the whole reason they are frequent is to keep them bug free
or more stable cores etc.
at the end of the day if you dont like it as Kevlar source said - dont come to the forum..

i like the roms... and the most are stable enough.
i know this isn't the right section, but it had to be said:
i don't like the way the roms are presented in this forum.
for example the title of the topics. it's so chaotic. on every title is "update" but in real they are so old.
another example: there are topics sticky which are one year old. and nobody needs them.
correct me if i'm wrong that nobody needs them. for example again: the rom kitchen of bepe. the images are also down of that topic.
but i like the roms and i am happy that this great forum exists XD but this forum could be better, if the topics were more coherent.

the biggest problem with your statement is that you're expecting something with no cost (read: free) as if you do with commercial products.
it's like expecting linux community (or open source community for that matter) that they can come up with an absolute software suite like Microsoft's, sure you get 1 option to choose from and you can expect quality and such, the thing is that Gates makes billions off of it while the chefs here don't.
I gotta ask, do you expect someone to make this "PERFECT" rom, or just pull it out of their bum? Thats why this site exists, to try to refine and make the perfect rom. Impossible mission if you ask me as MY perfect rom WON'T be YOURS...
All feed back given goes into making a stable and fast rom BUT that takes time. By the time someone has cooked the "perfect" rom, another core has come along that makes the rom just cooked look bad. Why do you think the chefs keep cooking???
Thank you to all the rom chefs out there.... Love your work.
I'll probably catch H-e-double hockey-stick for saying this, but I half way agree with the post... I definitely appreciate the hard work the chef's put in, and realize that the majority of them never see a dime for their efforts. But it does seem, at times, that some of them are just putting out ROMs as fast as they can with little or no attempt to thoroughly test the stability of what they're about to imply is ok to put on our (expensive) phones. Again - I understand this is time consuming and they cannot possibly test all the combinations of hardware and software configurations, but some ROMs have seemed so instable as to imply they weren't tested *at all*. I think a certain few chefs (eg VP3g) go the extra mile to make sure what they put on here is worthy of this forum.
Having said that, the chefs definitely do us all a great service and I thank them all. I'm a proud holder of an 8525 with a DVH ROM and, as a software developer for the government I'm sure I could cook a ROM... but the point is - I don't have the time or desire... These chefs sacrifice their time so that people like us can (better) enjoy our phones...
That's just my 2c worth.
lol nobody can make a bugless rom.. if you dont like cooked roms use an official one and see how you like that, half the speed, zero features, resets every day, doesnt even work really.
I can't see how topics like this keep getting everyone's attention. I mean the topic's title is one thing and the content is another. People who do nothing and expect/demand everything should not get this kind of attention at all. This topic should be locked asap.

Just an opinion.....

I really don't understand this attitude. What is the name of this forum? XDA-DEVELOPERS. What does that mean? That means this is a developers forum. And that implies that everything in this forum is in development. All the roms you find here are created by developers for developers. We are the parasites. We are leeching on whatever we find. Most of the time, we don't know what we are leeching on. That is because we are not DEVELOPERS. But that doesn't mean we can teach the DEVELOPERS how to behave. Don't you think that it would be very very cruel to come here, leech on their products and then teach them how to work?

Whats the Best TP2 6.5 Rom In YOUR OPINION?

Hey, Im coming from a CDMA TP1 and Now of course have a Tmobile TP2. Ive been holding off on flashing as Ive been waiting for the Official 6.5 to come out, But the more research I do the less I feel Tmobile will get one anytime soon, Please correct me if Im wrong!
SO Ive decided to take the plunge again and Flash this bad boy, Now coming from a tp1 Ive flashed my fair share and enjoy it very Much, except one thing, bugs, There always seems to be many bugs in Custom roms and fixes are always being made. I want a lite 6.5 rom that has the least amount of bugs, I have plenty cab files to get it how I want but once again I want a rom with the least bugs, great battery and a eyecandy dont matter.
So, Whats the best Tmobile TP2 rom out right now in your opinion??????
To tell you the truth all is great! All is the same, but just look different in visuals, builds, some programs, and features. Each chef has their own style so I would say flash them all and make a decision.
I can't tell you which one is better, but I can tell you the one in my sig is awesome!
Long time i don´t see one of this.
Keep questioning away my friend.

ROMeOS ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567161
In before LOCK in 3, 2, 1....
i have to say that i have dl many roms here and i love the new EnergyRom "Photon" (23016) with manilla 2.1 as it works better for t-mobile US, very smooth and stable good battery life no freezes, landscape works the only problem is youtube is not working but i dont really use that so its not an issue for me. this is by fay my Favorite ROM right now.
just my 2 cents!!
Dont waste your time
They are all rubbish mate, dont waste your time, wait until HTC release theirs, will happen THIS WEEK!
Are you kidding (whoever said they're rubbish), custom ROM's are 3x (at least) better than Official ROM's!
But to the original poster, you have to find your own that fits you. There is no answer, your question doesn't belong in this section, and it will only spawn battles over which ROM is best.
But you'll find all the WM6.5 ROM's here: http://thewingster.com/wm65tp2.aspx Enjoy!
Disagree
I tend to disagree with most, Including the mods, in that this is a valid question that can be asked. It is not 'rubbish to flash' and 'everyone finding their own by testing' is not good advice in my opinion. Their are two, count them 2, roms that fit the above criterion for a cooked rom. One has 1 TRUE bug... Youtube freezes the phone. Biggie or small depending. The other is the one I currently am running and believe I will stick with because it has NO bugs. Zero, Zilch, Nada! Alot needs to be said for that.
I found the first and was singing its praises when I noticed a new rom posting stating the ideal rom in my opinion. I flashed it just this morning and aftera days heavy use with all the normal trouble shooting I find it to be 100% bug free. YOU WILL FIND BUGS WITH 99% of roms. This is the exception.
The first, my second favorite, was Miris 3.0 rom running manilla 2.1, and windows 6.5.
The second, my favorite, is A.Z.T.O.R. by alphazero. It runs manilla 2.0 and windows 6.5.
any questions feel free to pm me or post here unless it gets closed. If it does, like I said, pm me.
Please keep non-development questions out of the development forums.
I moved the thread to the general thread.
The best ROM?
This has been discussed so many times before.
There is no such "Best ROM"
What´s best for me can´t be best for you.
It´s matter of tastes, what you need on a ROM and what not.
The best way is to test severals till you get your personal "Best"
The best ROM?
Sorry double post...
Nice rom.
Mosess, Dude, thanks for suggesting the rom you did. I agree 100 % this is a very stable and great rom. Im gonna mess with it for a while and see how everything agrees with me. So far so good. thanks again.
I agree with Orb! There is no such thing as best cooked ROM. Its just matter of personal preference when it comes to flashing ROM's.
If you are really looking for a stable ROM, then stick with stock ROM.
Per greedydog:
Stop "Flaming" a member on XDA.
If you happen to not like his/her/it's rom..............switch to a different one.
As for this thread..............everyone is different in likings for a rom, experiment with installing some and making your own decision.
