XDA Orbit Question - P3300, MDA Compact III General

I am wondering if it is possible to use the xda orbit as a wireless router almost. I have a pc thats connected directly to the internet via a cable modem which is not wireless, a wireless laptop and of course the wireless on the orbit. Is it possible to get the laptop on the internet via the orbit connected via usb to the pc? If so how?!

No it is not possible, connecting via cable disables WiFi, and enabling WiFi when the cable is in disables the USB connection. This is intentional and for security purposes.

not entirly true, you can enable it in activesync

Turn off Activesync ? (use USB w/o Activesync)

How can leave my Dash connected to the PC/USB but turn off Activesync (4.5) ?
The reason to do this is to allow my Dash to charge off the USB while I am using its WiFi connection (whenever I connect the Dash up to the USB, Activesync jumps in and that shuts down the WiFi connection).
Thanks.
Just check that you haven't configured an AS profile for your device or delete the configured one.
Try "WM5torage"
Makes your device a usb mass storage device and stop AS doing it's stuff. It does make your card unreadable by other software while running so you may want to bear that in mind when doing whatever your doing with your wireless.
Can't you just go into the connection settings in ActiveSync and disable the USB connection?

Yes, that does work. Thanks... its what I want to have happen...
OK I haven't tried this myself ( I do Wm5torage) but here's another link:

There's loads of other useful stuff at that site as well.

convert my P3300 into an usb wifi adapter?

heya,
i use use cardexportII to convert my P3300 into an USB flash disk. and on their web they got win98 drivers in case you want to connect it on an older system.
ok, so i wanted to know:
is there any way, a software or whatever, to connect my P3300 to an existing wifi, plug it with USB to a computer and the computer use it as wifi-adapter/access point to use that network?
i've read about people trying something like that but using bluetooth rather than USB to connect the mobile to the PC, i can use that too if you know how, but in the end what i really need is:
PC->USB->P3300->WIFI NETWORK
because i allways carry a little usb cable with me, and i don't want to carry an BT dongle around if i can avoid it.
and as we are at it, but not really important for me... would it be possible to convert my P3300 to a bluetooth dongle?
PC->USB->P3300->BT NETWORK/DEVICES
oh BTW, my P3300 has WM6 (official HTC release)
thx in advance for any help.
OH LOL, forgot to mention: all this WITHOUT ACTIVESYNC please.
not possible then?
For security reasons the device does not allow simultaneous USB and WiFi connections.

if i am not wrong, i have read somewhere it was possible to share a WIFI connection through BT or viceversa... so why would USB not be possible, when it's even more secure than BT?
i am getting a little sick of microsoft and their "security" crap... first they disable activesync over wifi and now this? did they never hear of VPN or the like?
/sigh

You can share the phone's GPRS connection, not WiFi. This is so you can use the device as a modem for your laptop etc.
You can not use bluetooth or WiFi when you have a USB connection because you could use it to hook up to two different networks at once, one with the USB cable and one with the WiFi. And then move data across the two networks. Which is a network security risk.
That risk would deter customers from buying the device as it could be used as a back door into the network. An employee plugs into the corporate network with the device (which is 'trusted' and has no password required) then an accomplice connects WiFi to the device and has free entry.
A USB wireless dongle can be bought for £10. Perhaps using that to set up an ad-hock network could be a solution for you?

where did you get all this info, that it is not possible due security reasons? as you mention, i could use a wifi dongle. and if i wanted to "hack" a network, i could use a laptop connected to a wired lan, and use it's wifi or a wifi dongle to do EXACTLY the same, so the security excuse (wherever you read it) is total bull****.
i want this, because i could just carry a wifi dongle in my bag, but if i could do it with the p3300 usb cable i always carry around, i would have one item less to worry around.
i really don't get all this security nonsense... in first place it needs a wep or wpa key to even connect to a wifi and in second place it's nothing i could not do with a laptop already, i don't understand the fuzz.
i asked the same thing on a microsoft mobile developer blog and the guy just started evading my questions and not responding at all.

share intenet TO my HD through USB and Activesync?

HI
I'm trying to share internet using the USB cable and activesync, I already configured my internet connection to share it with the new "local area connection" created when the HD is plugged in, but it doesn't work!
and by the way my computer has an IP:192.168.1.X, but the local area connection has an IP:192.168.2.X
really I even don't know if this is possible, but I did it with my old palm then I thought it can be possible.
thanks!
Using usb or bluetooth with activesync will share in automatic the PC internet connection without the need to set internet connection sharing on the pc

Either with OR without my HD can't see the internet connection on PC with active sync over USB.
Huh
I just plug my HTC Touch HD into the usb port and select "Internet sharing" and it comes up straight away, even works from scratch on windows 7 cos i tested it!

htc accessing internet through USB cable

Fellows.
I was digging into the search an could find nothing about it.
I had my excalibur working properly and after a hard reset, I was unable to reactivate this function.
I'm telling about use USB cable to share PC internet connection to HTC. I mean, navigate over the internet (with HTC) using USB cable conection instead of WIFI or GPRS alike.
When I sync my mobile, it automatically disables the WIFI connection, but I can't navigate just through USB connection.
Any thoughts?
thanks

[Q] Share internet via usb c ethernet adapter

Hi,
Does anyone know if you can share mobile data via usb c ethernet? I have a router that has 2 wan ports and would like to set up the note 10 + 5g as a failover connection. I have the tmobile version. I plug it into my router and the activity lights light up, but no data is being received. THe option to turn on usb tethering is grayed out. Any assistance is appreciated.
Thank you
What type of router do you have?

I have a trendnet TEW-829DRU. I know it's overkill for a home network.

I dont believe it's overkill whatsoever. I had an asus router not too long ago. When I attatched it to the router and I turned on USB tether, it automatically detected that it was a modem. I was able to share my internet connection thru the router and broadcast the signal. As I understand it this is what your end goal is?
Yeah. Unfortunately the USB cannot be used to share a mobile connection. When I have the ethernet dongle plugged into the phone, usb tether stays greyed out. When I connect it to the WAN 2 port, the ethernet option stays greyed out. But I connect it to an open port the ethernet option becomes active and I can receive a data connection to surf on the phone.
As much as i know it's not possible to share internet via USB. If I'm wrong please let me know.
This will be possible soon: https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/...rives-in-latest-android-11-developer-preview/ although not sure if it will come to the Note 10+ and if so when.
Doesn't Settings>Connections>Mobile Hotspot and Tethering>USB tethering do the job?

Yeah but when you have a USB ethernet dongle USB tethering is greyed out.
What I did was to get one of these: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01N5RCZQH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and use it in client mode. Works perfectly.
