Flashing a cooked rom - further tips - P3300, MDA Compact III ROM Development

As a number of you are having problems flashing cooked roms I put up this sticky.
1. If you presently run a factory wm5\wm6 rom then uspl cid unlock (step 1 in my roms) your rom before you flash cooked rom.
2. If you have a cooked rom on your device already and are changing to another cooked rom (especially if rom is from a different cook) i would recommend you:
a) flash back to factory rom first
b) then cid unlock
c) then flash the new cooked rom.
This is because sometimes the new cooked rom does not function 100% on first flash and a repeat flash is required.
3.Alternatively (especially if you dont have access to the factory rom) flash the new cooked rom twice to be sure new rom has taken properly and if device is already cid unlocked there is no need to cid unlock again.

Thanks for your hard work
Yes flashing twice works!!!

Thanks
Thanks Meschle

No Navigation application included in ROMs
Maybe this is also interestening for newbies;
there is no TomTom or iGo in the ROMs included (this is a often asked question)
but you can download TomTom from their website for free (you only have to pay for the maps)
After installing TomTom - just insert your TomTom CD and install your maps from there.

Hi guys, I'd like to try one of your cooked roms but unless I tried to gather infos from the forum I still have some doubts....
First of all... the cid unlock procedure is needed only for the devices that are operator branded right? I mean if I have a normal HTC no brand I don't need to do this step... is this correct?
And last but not least.. how can I flash back to the factory rom??? Is the procedure the same? I tried to find my original rom but I couldn't... Does anyone can help me in finding it? (I've got the italian rom installed).
Thanks to everybody...

Before you start to cook your own rom...
May I add that's also very important to have been through the whole process (at least one time) of recooking an original rom without adding/removing anything ?!
That's the price we need to pay in order to achieve successfull rom cooking !

difficulties to flash artemis
i have M650 (orange) wih WM4. it was unloacked by orange.
i'm not able to flash it.
i have the error 270 fconnect lost or file corruoted
how can i solve my issue?

only flash the new one.

Just like to add that sometimes the ROM file renames itself to an N file even if you rename it back to a NBH file so watch for that before flashing cooked ROMs

using the ROM Update utility, how do I get it to choses the correct rom file. Cooked one with extended rom how do I get tit to choose this file?

The above questions asked are really important for the ppl flashing their ROMs for the 1st time. I want to add some more questions
- How to put the original ROM back on the device.. (could not find the steps for the same)
- CID unlock. If i put the original ROM back on the device, will it automatically take care of the CID which was unlocked before (to flash the cooked ROMs)?
- Is there any way we can see CID info on the mobile?

to put the original ROM just get it and flash it when needed
and when flashing it it don't need CID unlock or anything and it will bring back your device to original SPL, IPL, Radio and ofcourse the OS

SPL - Service Providor Lock. Your phone has a SPL in place to prevent you from flashing a ROM from another providor for example. By Flashing Hard-SPL - you permanently remove the SPL check when flashing a ROM thereby allowing you to flash any ROM that is designed for your device.
You can use Soft-SPL which will prevent the check from happening when you flash on a once only basis. If you have a problem during the upgrade - the ONLY way to recover you phone is by flashing the original ROM. Therefore if you don't have the original ROM to hand - Hard-SPL is highly recommended! It allows you to flash another ROM if you have a problem during a flash - thereby recovering your device.

Reverting back to complete WM5

Hi All,
I've been playing around with various WM6 ROM's but I have now decided to sell the phone (I want a Kaiser!), anyway whats the best way of reverting back to the original HTC booloader & WM5 ROM. I ask this because I still have valid warranty but only if HTC never find any traces of different ROM's??
I assume I would use ROM
HTC English HTC__001 1.23.405.2 1.07.0000 1.38.00.11 ??
but what about the bootloader??
Any advice would be a real help
Cheers
Ody
You should have the original ROM on your phone just hard reset it using the key combination to reinstall...

incorrect.. hard resetting will just wipe your data, not revert your ROM to original factory ROM
if you have the official ROM from your manufacturer, it should come with SPL packaged in it.. run SSPL manually and then run the official ROM update
I thought that part of the ROM comes with a hidden partition of WM5 so that in event of problems you could reflash back as it says in the manual? This is quoted in many threads! ie. Flash WM6 as much as you want and in event of problems just restore back to original state.
Yes but by flashing the orginial WM5 that cane with the device...
If you flash with WM6 the "Hidden" section will restore WM6 i.e. whats on the device..
so what would be good then is if there was a simple tool for backing up a rom to a PC like the one Orange used to do instead of all the command line converstions etc...
if one enter the bootloader and format the reg and storage that way
it's like an old fasion hardreset
everything will go back to the org rom settings
but never to a former rom if one have flashed it to a new one
hence is the a way we can simply backup our present ROM exactly as we have it now before flashing?
you can do a dump of your ROM to make a backup of it.. although it's a bit troublesome. Depending on your carrier, they may actually have your official ROM on their site, or it may be in the wiki, so not everyone needs a ROM dump
yep.. but if you changed WM5 and installed progs exactly as you wanted it then its good to get a backup...
umm.. yeah... i guess that goes without saying. you could use sprite or something.. then flash the same original wm5 rom and restore your backup
yes but would be more handly to create a flashable rom backup

Newbie with 1 big question

Dear All,
first of all....HELLO! I've just registered myself on the forum.
Yesterday I bought the HTC P3600 (Trinity, I think), english version (I suppose it's called wwe). I want to install a cooked ITALIAN ROM, but I read I'm losing the guarantee if I'll do it.
Somebody tell me there is a software that can allow me to re-install the original ROM and avoid the guarantee losing.
Is this right? can someone give me more info?
Thanks in advance for your reply and sorry for my english
Best regards
You can always go back to an original HTC rom, as long as you don't brick your device.
In order to prevent that, you should install a Hard-SPL (board search, iirc its a sticky) which is a replacement bootloader that allows flashing any Rom after bricking.
Have fun playing around with your new P3600.

So if I install first the Hard-SPL I can install a COOKED ITALIAN ROM and after I can go back the original HTC ROM and I'll not lose my guarantee???
If I brick, how can I de-brick the HTC?
Thanks for the quickly reply

You should try reading the WIKI and also check www.trinityguides.info
Helloo there.
Your phone is probably cid locked, that means, that u can install only original htc rom-wm5. wm6 doesnt exist for htc trinity.
If u have cid unlocked, u can flash any rom with the RUU (rom update utility) , which is in the package with the rom.
Otherwise i prefer for my cid locked trinity that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293632
U loose warranty if u send the broken pda on service with the custom rom installed on it. So, before u send it, flash the original rom over and it will be ok.
The problem could be, if the lcd goes bad, than its hard to reinstall the original rom. i know u understand.

Thanks for your answer. I installed the SPL-1.20 and I updated my Radio version (1.46.00.11------is it good?). Now I can install every unofficial ROM and in any case I can go back (how?).
Is it right?

HTC e-club doesn't have roms for diamond - not on Hong Kong where I login anyway.
Thanks for the reply Riel/Tim, I have been to that page and enter in my SN and register but when I go to my device nothing comes up... I cannot see the Diamond listed under software downloads either..? I log into world wide...
Thanks for the reply, I have been to that page and enter in my SN and register but when I go to my device nothing comes up as well... SO I'd say HTC havent release any ROM device updates... SO how do you guys get the exe for the diamond v1.93???
Also to install the 1.93 ROM posted by Tom do I need to install HardSPL on my phone..? Because it looks like that package will work with no need to install any SPL, its just an exe that runs through a wizard... What way/how does the HardSPL versions here prevent me from bricking the phone? How do I find the SPL version that is currently on my phone and can I revert back to the original SPL/remove hard CID so I dont void warranty..?
Tim what ROM are you using on your Diamond and how did you install it???
Also does the ROM posted by Tom have the Radio ROM (I think its 1.00.25.5 inc in the package guessing by the file name?) let me use Quad band network?
HTC does release the updates, but not on their site. Only to their resellers I believe.
Yes, it is essential to install hard SPL on your phone for any ROM you want to try. I am using walshieau's Elite 3.0 ROM 9 (which is very quick). This is what I did to install it:
1) Flash hard SPL signed version (which will hard reset your phone, so backup using PIM backup from pocketpcfreewares.com)
2) Flash the ROM of your choice
After this I decided to update the Radio to version .05
In order to do this I needed to first flash with UNsigned hard SPL, then flash the radio using CustomRUU. Now I have support for Telstra's NextG 850Mhz.
NightWolf88: check your PM and you can contact me by phone and I may be able to explain in more detail.
Thanks very much for the help Tim!!! Thanks to all the other people doing great work on these forums!!
Ok so from what I have read so far ( I posted this in the 1.93 ROM thread as well - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2416200&posted=1#post2416200) I just need some of my noobish questions answered, dont want to ruin my lovely Diamond :
From what I have read:
1. Backup device - Is there any way I can backup the ROM which is currently on my device (1.37.00.0 WWE)???
2. Upgrade to HardSPL signed as this is a signed ROM- download this file http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=400402 extract, run the .exe file... Follow the RomUpdateUtility.exe (RUU) wizard - SPL will flash and then with any luck get a message saying complete - job is done.
What does "1. do not try to use this SSPL to flash anything else other than an SPL file. it explicitly blocks other flashes anyway. SSPL is *never* a good way to flash OS images" mean... So can I not use this to update the device OS ROM to 1.93. in this thread??? I assume SSPL = Signed Second Program Loader..?
Do I need to use this unsigned version..? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=400950 - It has overwrite protection..?
Finally - use volume down & soft reset to see that SPL/bootloader has installed/flashed correctly... Then to SAFELY get out of the bootloader softreset again...?
3. Upgrade the OS ROM using the .exe file in post 1 of this thread...
So I download the exe connect my device via active sync then follow the rest of the steps in the RUU.exe wizard, it will give me a progress bar on both the PC and the Diamond, the Diamond will then softreset with the new rom all installed..?
Questions:
Can someone please confirm the above method is correct to install the ROM on this page?
Does the Radio also update itself to 1.00.25.05 when running the exe in the post #1??? I.e. will I get quad band radio support???
Do I need the signed or unsigned SPL what is the best to use???
How do I dump the ROM that is currently on my device to PC/whats the best program? Do I need to do this for warranty etc or if I dont like the new ROM..?
To restore to original SPL I go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2324829&postcount=39 grab my stock SPL and then use the unsigned SPL RUU exe? What is SSPL-manual used for???
Also in the post by cmonex (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2324829&postcount=39) he says "if you have signed hardspl, just go ahead and flash with normal RUU process (no overwrite protection in that one, as it is already only accepting htchackers signed files, there was no need for that)."
What is the normal RUU process???
If I use the signed SPL I can just use the RUU.exe that comes with that and copy the stock SPL to replace the .nbh file in the signed Hard-SPL folder and everything should run fine? No need to worry with the unsigned Hard-SPL version right?
As stupid as it may sound I still don’t get all this SPL/SSPL/Hard-SPL stuff, what is on the phone originally? and what changes with hard-spl download packages??? I assume SPL is a boot loader like BIOS on the “PC” or EFI on Intel-Apple Macs..? What is the difference between the stock SPL/bootloader on the phone and signed/unsigned hard-SPL that some of the guys here have made?
Thanks once again ,

Same problem here!
Yes, I did use the search function but didn't find what I was looking for.
That being said, I have registered my Diamond on e-Club. (It's a French Orange one, so I used a hack I found on another forum to correctly register by changing "HT825" to "HT826" in the SN.) However, I don't see anything for the diamond available for download under "Phone Software Updates" and "Other Downloads."
So my question is: does HTC offer certain downloads only to certain SN?
The answer might have been already posted somewhere; if so please redirect me (and NightWolf88) to the correct thread if you know it!
Thanks
PS: NightWolf88, check out www.modmydiamond.info if you haven't already: it's a fantastic tutorial that will most likely answer most of your questions regarding the fine art of ROM flashing and restoring.
Yeah I have checked that page, great site.
From what I have read there are no HTC e-club updates for the Diamond yet, only updates going to resellers... I also emailed HTC Tech support - I got this reply:
Thank you for choosing hTC. Please note that there's no new rom for HTC Touch Diamond at the moment. We recommend you to visit our hTC HK website for the latest information as below

I wish that HTC would pull there finger out and release an official ROM.
After putting an Official Rom update on the e-club site but then taking it down pretty quickly, it seems strange they haven't released one yet.
Im holding out for an Official Rom, but I think i will just give in and flash a cooked rom in the end.
Gonna try flashing the Radio first as I havent got an issue with the Rom itself, just with the signal behaving very erratically!
Will see.
Great site tho xda devs and also the modmydiamond one to, some invaluable info on both of them.
Thanks everyone on here.

It is 1.37 in my case, in Dutch.

Yeah it seems that only device SNs that shipped with <1.37 have an update, there is no offical release of 1.93 which is (from what I have read) better than 1.37, but 1.37 was alot better than the 34s and 35s if you do a search around the net alot of reviewers got sent these ROMs which fixed initial lag issues...
I want to put 1.93 on my device, wanted offical htc release but I'm just going to use the one posted here...
Any one hjelp me with the ROM update???
