is this a common problem? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

my xda2s recently experienced a problem which consists of the volume bar keep going up and up making the 'end' noise repeatedly, and if say the volume bar on the side were to be pressed down, it would go down n go up again...
secondly, the power button is not functioning well, it can turn the phone on by clicking it once (as usual) it can turn the backlight on and off by holding it (as usual) but it wont turn off by pressing it once, or anything...
help please, thank you

doesn't happen with any of my 3... sounds like you've got them there problems.

pYroboy,
let me know if you found the resolution. My problems are similar to yours...
Thanks.

doesnt happen to any of my two BA...
try opening up your unit and clean up the contacts.

I did open it, but could not figure out which contact to clean. Power switch is sooooooo freaking small, I did not figure out what I could clean there, it seems that it is 2x4mm in size soldered for good to the board. Same about volume rocker/switch on the side.
How is it possible to clean them??? I could not figure out what could be cleaned there without detaching the switches from the board.
Does anyone sell these parts? Maybe it would be easier (although not easy also because they are so freaking small) to replace them??
Guys, need advice from you... from the ones who fooled around with similar parts...
Thanks.

try an air brush. or a fast evaporating contact cleaner.
just make sure you apply enough pressure not to blow the sensitive parts away.
*just becareful

OK. Thanks. I'll try that. But where do you people get that stuff. Do they sell it in electronics stores, or I need to look someplace else?
I need to do something anyway, because today I can't turn ON. I used timeout of 1 minute on battery power to power it OFF. But not being able to turn the whole thing ON really put me down....
Is there any program to remap Power On/Off button to Recorder or Media Player buttons on the side? They are all 3 the same switches. If it would be possible, I'd get by using one of those buttons.... Just running out of freaking ideas here....

contact cleaners can be found in your local radioshack(i.e. electronics or computer botique/shops).
regarding the power button i think that is hardwired to be the only powerbutton for the unit. sad to say you cant map it to powerup your BA.

Assuming you have the button lock enabled you can wake it up by receiving a phone call, and then disable the button lock and use any button to wake up/turn on the device. This is not the most elegant solution, but if cleaning fails to fix it then it may be your only option.

Can't power off... volume goes down by itself...

Guys, need help... can't figure out if it is a soft or a hard problem...
Have had SX66 for 3 years. Almost never a problem (except for occasional thing when people could not hear me, I could hear them, but after soft reset that thing usually corrected itself).
However, just recently got a real problem.
- Can't power it off. Power buttom only works on powering on, but not on powering off.
- At the same time, the volume window pops up (with two volume sliders, "on", "vibrate", and "off), and the left slider automatically slides down on its own, preventing me from accessing anything else. When I try to do something else, go to Programs, or else, this freaking Volume window keeps popping up, and left slider keeps going down and stays down there.
When I try to increase volume, it keeps going down right after I raise it. And the volume window is almost constantly popped up.
From time to time, it disappears, allowing me to do something for several seconds or even minutes, but then pops up again.
Yesterday, I even managed to do something for several minutes without it, and even managed to turn SX66 off, although I had to press the button for a second longer than usual to turn it off. Today, no luck, can't power it off. If I press it for a bit longer, it just goes in "dimmed" screen mode, but stays powered on.
Any advice?
Thanks.
I guess, I'll have to try to clean the power button and volume slider on the side. Looking for good disassembly instructions. Found one, but more would be appreciated...

I have the same problem. I was starting to think that there is no way to turn of BA . Any help?
I have the same problem, only that mine is a HTC touch dual (niki).
the volume screen keeps popping up, and does a "volume down" command... sometimes it goes away, sometimes it comes back...
:S
Ive got a similar problem ive upgraded my BA to wm 6.1 (Xplod) the problem that i am having is that i cant seem to power it off..only way that im able to do that is by removing the battery..when i keep the power button pressed only the backlight turns off but no the phone..How to i power it off?
and secondly ive a problem with the keyboard..while writing some times i press a key and it keeps typing that for example i write s it keeps writing ssssss or giving spaces untill i press something else...is this a software issue or a hardware issue..cant seem to figure it out
I know this thread has been a while but if anyone has the same problem, you'd probably be interested about what i did.
well i had the same problem of the volume going down by itself and the volume icon pops which basically lets you do nothing.
tried all the approaches thinking it was a software issue. but i finally went nuts and took my torx screwdriver, opened the blue angel and tore off the part in the motherboard where the outer volume lever is attached to.
It worked.
So if you could with the fact you wont a direct volume adjustment at the side, you could probably try it

That's a bugger - power switch

Anyone else accidentally pressed the power button whilst using the HW keyboard? It's a better power switcdh in that it's easier to use, but it's also more sensitive and when I'm holding the phone in two hands and typing, I've accidentally hit the power button a few times.
It's still a million times better than the TP though.
But aren't you supposed to push AND hold it for it to power off? Or do you mean that any slight touch and it turns off the screen?

I've not done it myself no, but it comes up with a warning before switching it off anyway.
I've done it quite a few times .. you accidentally nudge the button and the screen goes blank ..
yeppers, im doing it but am learning not too lol
i'm starting to do this too! quite frustrating sometimes!
I was going to add a poll to see who could clock-up the most accidental-power-switch-whilst-typing hits but I can't see a way.
So I'll start the ball rolling:
3 (so far)
I've done it 7 times since yesterday.
4 of which were in a 10 minute gap last night when I couldn't figure out why my screen was switching off by itself. I was getting ready to RMA it when I remembered this thread and slapped myself.
I've already lost count of how many times I've switched the screen off, really frustrating!!
This is the only niggle I've come accross so far that I cant fix easily... I'll have to chop off my left index finger! lol
Funny. I never accidentally turn it off
I guess it's the way I hold the phone that's different than you guys. Because I can't think of a way why you can accidentally press the power button!
When I have it in landscape mode, I automatically wrap my forefingers around the back section of the phone (much like holding a videogame controller)
This causes the section of my finger closest to my hand to rest on the power button by accident. A small movement of my finger to the right will cause it to press the power button.
I only have problems with the volumebuttons when sliding open the keyboard...
Hi,
I'm going nuts on this, as well. Isn't here any app, that just disables the power button when the keyboard is in use?
Cheers,
Zivi

What, do you use your feet?
I've had the same problem also quite a few times already. First couple of times I was really scared some contact was loose or something!
I agree on the powerbutton beying annoying
I vote also for some kind of hack, like disable power off when the keyboard is out. As some of you already mentioned.

Am I the only one who hits the power button with the keyboard extended?

I've searched but I can't find any one else complaing of this problem and it's driving me nuts.
When I extend the hardware keyboard to type, my finger often rests on the power button turning the screen off. Does anybody else face this problem? Is there a registry hack to disable the power button with the keyboard is extended?
Thanks
jejeje
Same problem!!!! so frustating!!!
No you are not the only one; I also have this problem; when writing message I touch the power button accidentally a lot and the only solution I could come to was to be more delicate and careful when writing
Regards,
Yep, same problem here! A really silly thing to miss - there's not particular reason to not have the power button on the right at the top rather than the left.
all the time....
very frustrating,
..then I try to open it, wait a fraction of a second, click it again for fear of not having pushed it enough the first time, ... and I end with the sleep mode on the phone , .. so I click it firmly for a third time finally opening it..
timewaste...
same here

me too
Add me to the list.
Which makes me wonder, why didn't they place the power on the top right?
Well at least I know I'm not the only one. Still hoping someone smarter than I will find a way to disable it with keyboard extended
@vdKarel I would have found those post had I spelt button with two t's (#)
I wasnt having that problem until today actually. lol. funny you bring it up. After discovering this, i did find it a little inconvenient where the power button is placed
happens some times. probably the power button would be better in an other place
I do it all the time as well
I use it a lot (pages and pages of word documents written on it in the train) and it doesn't happen...
When I hold mine with keyboard extended, my left index (which is the one which could hit the power button) is folded, so it hits the left side of the keyboard "block" (no power button here) then goes under the screen "block" and holds the back of the keyboard "block", it doesn't press the left side of the screen "block" (which has the power button).
Do you guys have your left index extended for it to be along the left of both the keyboard "block" and the screen "block" ? I don't see how else you could be hitting the power button...
PS : On my TyTN, this allowed me to turn the PPC on and off with the left index tip with the keyboard out, this avoided waiting for the screen to rotate when I knew I'd wand it in landscape when I trun back on.
This only happens to me after ALMOST completing a 900 word e-mail . . .
You're not alone, and there are fixes for this:

For the Tilt 2, this doesn't happen. I don't know if it's because of WM 6.5 or something AT&T implemented or what, but the power button has no effect when the keyboard is out. I actually want to find a way to enable that because at times I want to put it in sleep mode while open.
Why do you have your fingers extended?? I never have this problem in my TP2!

um.. to hold it securely?
ummm, not to sound like a smart a$$ but this has been covered n many threads previously...i believe that if u search for "disable power button" ull find ur answer...its a simple .cab installation that disables the power button when the keyboard is extended...hope that helps and good luck

[Q] Screen wont turn on after it turns off. ATT Tilt 2

Everytime I boot my phone up, it works fine up until when the screen goes into sleep mode. Once it goes into sleep mode I cannot turn the screen back on, it stays black. The keyboard, end and answer key lights show up when I press the power button but the screen just stays black no matter what button I press.
I end up having to either take the battery out or using the stick to press the reset button on the side in order to get the phone to where I can see the screen again. I have adjusted the settings to where the screen doesnt go into sleep mode and the screen just stays on but that drains my battery. I want to be able to have my screen go off so I can save power but if it goes off it wont come on again until I reboot.
I have done a hard reset. This problem started happening to me when I started using the Energy Rom but I've even flashed different Roms and the problem still exist.
Somebody please tell me what's wrong! I need help! This is a big annoying problem to have. Thanks.
is this problem occurring when you slide the keyboard out?
i had the t-mobile touch pro2 with this problem.
the screen would die when the keyboard was out and not come back.
if this is the case, what i did was...
well. obviously not open the keyboard fully.
but if i accidentally had.
instead of pulling out the battery, i waited...
till the screen 'naturally' went to sleep.
than i would pull out the stylus or press power button
and the screen would come on.

Yes the problem still exist even when I slide the keyboard out. Once the screen goes off, that's it....pressing the power button to get it out of sleep mode, sliding the keyboard, I press all buttons and nothing works. The only thing that "works" to get the screen back on is removing the battery or using the stylus to press the reset button.
When sliding the keyboard out the keys light up but the screen doesn't come on, also pressing the power button lights up the end and answer keys without the screen coming on.

so. whenever the screen goes out, period, you cant get it back?
or the screen goes out and cant get it back once you slide the keyboard out?
if it is only when sliding out the keyboard...
try not opening the keyboard fully on the right side.
on my rhodium, after that point, the screen goes out.

Yes, period. Also, you know when you put your face to the phone during a call and the screen goes off so your face wont press anything on the screen? It doesn't come back on from that either once I end the phone call, it just stays black. I'm assuming you don't have any other suggestions. This Sucks

This has to be a software issue but I don't know where to start. I'm surprised nobody else has encountered this problem. I've grown frustrated of this issue because I don't understand why it's doing this. I have had the phone for almost 6 months only dropping it once 4 months ago and it wasn't a strong damaging drop that would affect anything inside. I guess I'll just have to go last resort and call warranty to swap the phone out. Thanks for the help.

My phone also dos not come back on, when I put it in out the sreen with the power button on top, or when the phone goes to sleep. Nothing can put it back on(opening te keyboard, pulling out the stylis, presing the answer-, windows-, back- and end button). I and up using a music players too keep the phone busy what's makes it operational. Cant really remember when this started happening exactly. My phone is at the moment loaded with a standard ROM. I used too have a custom ROM.
My TP2 does this too, although I only encounter the problem sometimes when someone calls. I answer and put the phone next to my ear, the screen goes black as it should and the phone just dies. I can't hear what the other person is saying and the screen wont turn on anymore. I have to take out the battery to reboot.
set light sensor to manual in settings. You have some bad or fragmented code causing the problem. Pretty common actually, many different reasons, but usually either a bad light or proximity sensor or software issue. Setting the sensor to manual should do it, if not, hard reset and allow the phone to fully set up before touching it, to allow full customization process to complete. Search my posts on SOD (sleep of death) for more information.
Funny this was brought up. Now im worried I just dropped 250.00 and have a new one coming.
Mine started with the ear piece quit working. couldnt hear anything except on speaker.
Anyway I started having the screen issue over a month ago, only way to get it back was soft reset with the stylus. Also when the screen was lit, I couldn't hit the power button to turn the screen off. At times the screen would be on 24/7 and I just dealt with it. The times when it decieded to go to sleep was when I needed the soft reset. Well long story short I forgot my charger one day at work and the battery died. after pressing the power button for hours with no response, moving the screen in all diffrent directions as I pressed the button. It came on once after hrs of messing with it. Well today it died again and I am fed up with it so out came the tools. Once I opened it up I noticed the ribbon that feeds the screen from the mother board was worn and torn. the ribbon slides everytime the keyboard is slid out and it rubs on both sides of the phone. I thought maybe mine was just a fluke and was installed wrong considering the phone being 10 months old but now I read this and see maybe its a common problem. The cheapest I could find the Ribbon was 56.00 so I didnt want to chance it not being the issue.

Problem with power and volume down buttons

Hi everybody,
I have sometimes a strange problem :
- the volume down button doesn't work anymore.
- I can't use the power button to turn on / off my phone, but it works as I can press it 3 times to open camera. On the contrary, I can't use it to ask for reboot, but it works for soft reset! Aaaaaarrgh! Brain pain!
When I try to soft reset, my phone enters in safety mode, as if I pressed the volume down button during restart.
In bootloader, I can't use power and volume down button. Quite annoying.
Sometimes, volume is turning down without pressing any button.
But what is weird is that my phone shifts from normal state (all buttons working) to defect state and back to normal state again without doing anything. It's unpredictable. It can work well for decades, then stops working fine for hours or days then back to normal.
Sometimes, when it works well, when I'm using it, it goes wrong without doing anything. I'm reading my favorite site and volume is suddenly going down. Without warning, without even touching a button.
I have to say one more thing. I picked up that phone from a coworker, and the volume button is a bit bent near volume up (picture needed?) but it worked fine for months before starting to mess.
I hope you'll be able to help me.
Sorry for my English, it's not my native tongue.
Seems to me like a hardware problem.
What I'd do honestly is to hit it repeatedly on a hard surface, but please, do not do that
If you can I suggest taking it apart and making sure all the ribbons are firmly set in place and undamaged. It can be an one way ticket for damaging the phone for good though, so wait for other suggestions too.
Thanks for your answer.
What is making me angry is that it also does this when left alone on the table : I let it there working perfectly and when I pick it up again, it fails.
And when it fails, once again I let it alone and suddenly the volume goes down, without even touching it. Raging.
its a hardware problem, u have to change the volumes and power flex, had the same problem with the powern button, i turn the phone off, and a few secons later it power on by himself till i change the flex
Did you take the phone apart recently? I had my battery replaced and that's when my Volume up started phantom pressing. I hit the phone repeatedly on a flat service and made sure to kind of slap it so it would impact kinda evenly as to not dent the case, it worked for about a week at a time, then I just took the phone apart and tried to align everything and made sure all the insulation tape was flat and and not bunched up and now it's fine. We'll except my USB port has got some giggle to it. Order a new USB of amazon for like $9, I'm trying to hold out for a LG V30
