Converting applications

How could I convert non pocket pc application
into pocket pc application? Is there any software
to do that? Is is very frustrating that those application
works on desktop pc but not on pocket pc. can
anyone help here. thanks.
You could try to write a i386 virtual machine for PocketPC, and install a Windows (98, 2k, XP) on that virtual machine.
Sorry, just kidding  . No, actually you can't run a PC binary on a PPC. If you have the source code than you can compile it for PPC, if there aren't unsuported features inthe code (usually there are so you have to change the code). It's usually hard work to port an application that was written without thinking of porting it (does the Bridge pattern ring a bell? )

rom update in Vista

Hi everybody:
I recently started to use a PC with Vista. No activesync but instead WMDC exists. There is no problem in sync.ing with PPC but RUU does not work as expected.
I wonder if there is anyone else who successfully run RUU under vista and flush a new rom to the wizard..
I tried to apply the steps explained in this tread (which is for Hermes) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299462 but I failed. RUU starts, then PPC starts in boot loader mode, after that the RUU hangs with an error...
Any advice, solution etc will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Orhan.
did you try mobilty ceter
i think windows vista uses mobilty ceter not active sync

I have used VMWare to update the ROM and it works without problems
it worked flawlessly!!
it worked flawlessly !!!!
1) install VMWare (http://www.vmware.com/download/ws/), 2) add a virtual machine in VMWare, 3) install Windows XP to that virtual machine (I used a 2GByte disk space for the xp virtual partitation), 4) Install activesync 4.5 ,
the rest is straight forward as you know

Yes, VMware works flawlessly on my vista x64... I've flashed ppc several times using XP virual machine and without any problem, but don't forget to disable usb connection on WMDC - else the RUU may cause an error in bootloader mode as it happened to me
Easier way?
So your saying this is the easiest way? There has to be an easier way to flash on vista.
i also use a virtual machine...its called Parallels Workstation...all vista users stick with a vitual machine...it is the easiest way so far...unless u just want the OS then just use ShellTools
Step By Step
Can somebody explain step by step how dos it work.Thank you.

I'm not sure exactly what "it" is referring to, but if you are talking about how to install a VMWare workstation and create an image, there are plenty of helps online already to explain that. Just Google it. If you are referring to how to do the ROM update once you get into your virtual machine, it's pretty straight forward. You just plug in your USB cable from your cradle (when the Axim is on it) and the virtual machine will install it just as if you were running Windows XP natively on your machine. Again, there are lots of helps out there if you Google it.
htc prophet
1. installed vmware - xp pro
2. installed active sync 4.5
3. WMDC usb bypass
4. VM menu - REMOVABLE DEVICES - USB DEVICES - High tech computer usb device
5. nothing
just curious, but will this work with microsoft virtual pc instead of vmware? will probably test it myself when i next flash a new rom, but figured it was worth asking here...

Yes, it should work just fine. It's the same concept either program you use.
I think that microsoft virtual pc 2007 doesn't support USB connections, so it won't work with it.

hmmm...that would suck...though it does seem like virtual pc is a bit limited in it's hardware setup for a virtual system. if it doesn't work, i guess i'll have to try vmware...assuming it's free as well.

VMWare Player is free, but you would have to obtain a VMWare image somehow to use it. Otherwise, to create a VMWare image, you have to get VMWare Workstation which is gonna cost you.
yup...confirmed that virtual pc doesn't work...doesn't pick up connection (kinda sucks...since it was a free program)...

Flashing on a Mac

Hi guys, I've searched already, and found nothing that answers my question, so that's said. Now, my Windows computer (a laptop) was SMASHED by a cousin of mine. That was the computer I used for flashing (everything else, I'm an Apple-lite, so I use my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro) But now I can't flash. Is there any way to do this with Missing Sync? on Mac OS X?
No there isn't. To bad. I use a Mac too (and the Missing Sync). All the rom flashing and stuff happens on a PC.
But...
Since you've got a Mac with an Intel processor, you can use Apple's Bootcamp or some sort of Windows emulation app.
ah!! A fellow Apple-lite. Hmmm... Can't flash... that IS rather depressing...
Flashing on a Mac Solutions
I also am searching for a solution to this problem. I have a Powermac G4 so, alas, I can't do mine through intel via bootcamp. I would have to spend the money and lower myself to Virtual PC. I'd rather put that towards a new Macbook Pro! You can do it through bootcamp. I did it at my Dad's house on his macbook pro while I was visiting.
In my searching I've discovered that you can flash via your sd card, but you need a program to extract the .cab and make a change to the file. They were sugesting cabextract. Problem is, that it's not available in Leopard right now, and I haven't found another solution yet. I'm still searching though. If anyone can give any more light on this or correct me if I'm wrong that would be great. I really want to come up with a solution for us mac guys!

Check out VMWare Fusion which lets you run XP in a window. I use that to flash to my MDA Wizard and it works great. The only thing I haven't been able to do - and it may be resolved now in a later release of Fusion - is upload maps for my iGuidance navigation software. For that I have to use the PC.
Hope that helps.
You can use BootCamp to install & run Windows XP natively on your mac.
One of the problems is that I don't have a copy of Windows XP SP2 or above... I have SP1, but not SP2. And I don't have Vista either.

I don't know how to do it sans Windows. Please let us know if you figure that out.
In other words, I can't use Boot Camp, cos it requires at least XP SP2.
get ur device CID unlocked(CID unlocking requires activeSync)
n then try SD card formatting it doesnt require any computer
After my desktop fried, and i'm always on the go, i purchased a macbook and its my primary computer. I use windows xp running through VMWare's fussion to flash roms, hardspl, cid unlock, tether.. basicly everything for my WM devices. Works perfectly fine for my hermes and kaiser, but wouldn't work on my wizard(that was with parallels) and haven't tried on my magician.
Anyways, i used to use parallels before fusion and it also said it needed an xp sp2 cd, but i went ahead and installed it through the xp sp1 cd and downloaded the sp2 update after xp was installed and everything worked out fine. SO go ahead and give it a try with sp1 and see what happens. Also if you decide on running parallels or fusion, make sure you have enough ram! (i have 2gb ram on my macbook and fusion is set to use 1gb when its running and it runs perfectly!)

Command Line WORKING! (DOS Prompt, CLI Windows Mobile)

Hello friends,
After some work I have finally gotten the command line interface (Dos Prompt CLI) to work on the Tmobile Rhodium with the stock ROM and Windows Mobile 6.1.
Here's what you need: Microsoft Windows Mobile Developer Power Tools available for free here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...d6-1dcc-47aa-ab28-6a2b006edfe9&displaylang=en
Within the Microsoft Windows Mobile Developer Power Tools package extract the folder called "PPC Command Shell - Command shell for the Pocket PC 2003 device." Do not worry that it says "Pocket PC 2003", we will make it work on Windows Mobile 5/6! (for background information read http://dalelane.co.uk/blog/?p=122&cpage=1#comment-102893). You will see three files: shell.exe, cmd.exe, and console.dll. Place the console.dll file in your Windows directory on your device (in our case, on the Rhodium Touch Pro 2 the Windows directory takes a long time to populate, but it will, add the console.dll to it). Then move the shell.exe and cmd.exe file to another folder on your device. After you are done with the below instructions you will be able to link directly to the cmd.exe file and run the command line terminal.
For the command line to work you would normally need to toggle the following registry key between "0" and "1" HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\Console\OutputTo
By default it is set to "1" which disallows the command prompt to run, we need to set it to "0" to enable the command prompt. But, the caveat is that upon reboot it's best to have this key set to "1" otherwise your boot process is extended by about two minutes and you will get two open command prompt windows upon booting which you will need to manually close to go back to your home screen (annoying, but not a huge issue). In order to avoid all that, I have created a two simple Cab files which toggle the above registry key between "0" and "1". Before running the command prompt I run Command_Line_VISIBLE.cab (which turns the registry key to a "0" and when I'm done with the command prompt I run Command_Line_INVISIBLE.cab (which turns the registry key back to '1').
If you forget to run Command_Line_INVISIBLE.cab when done with the command prompt it's no big deal, just run it whenever you get a chance (even after a reboot, which would take two minutes longer and open the command prompt by default, which is no biggie since you can just close it once the device fully boots). Leaving the registry key set to "0" should not damage anything.
I have attached the cab files on the forum.
The goal of installing a command line interface on a Windows Mobile device is 'hackability'... you get yet much better (granular) access to your device. I have always been fond of the way Linux-based devices (Android, Iphone, Nokia N900) give you access to the command line, and always wanted something similar on Windows Mobile. Now this is possible, albeit with less options than the linux-based phones.
For example, with the command line you can now run NetCat. Netcat is known as the Swiss Army Knife of Networking. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netcat) on your Windows Mobile phone...
You can download and install NetCat for Windows Mobile at http://prt.fernuni-hagen.de/~bischoff/wince/
I have tested a few basic NetCat commands and they seem to be working as expected, but more testing is needed.
Any feedback is appreciated
Usual disclaimer: This has worked great for me, but obviously I am not responsible if you damage your device.
Does anyone have any comments?
Please post your thoughts.
thank you
so glad i found this post, just about to try it out on my hd2...
To what end? What does this accomplish?

Hi! Any update on this?
I tried this on my HD2 (WM6.5, ROM v. 1.61.468.1). The console is able to display text and run commands, but I can't type anything directly into it. The only button that seems to work is Enter.
If I type somewhere else and copy-paste into the console this works and commands execute perfectly.
What could be the trouble? Thanks in advance.
I have not tested the CLI on the HD2, but clearly your issue is caused by a lack of a physical keyboard. You may find a workaround to this (since you can copy and paste into the CLI fields), but unfortunately I cannot be of assistance since I only own the Touch Pro 2.
Good luck!

Do you have a software keyboard in your device (my previous BlueAngel had one in addition to hardware)? If yes -- could you please check if the console works with software keyboard?
good!! Did you try pocketgcc on it?
Great news! I just tried the command line using the soft keyboard built into my Touch Pro 2 and it worked... I was able to enter commands in the command line without having to pull out or use the hardware keyboard.
Are you unable to use your software keyboard on the HD2 with the command prompt?

This is pretty awesome. I love my mini version of a PC and having this only helps...
Here is how one can use the command prompt for NetCat...
I have it working on Telus Touch Pro2 but the physical keyboard doesn't work except for backspace and enter. It could be due to Tarkims keyboard remapper. It does however work perfectly with the soft keyboards. I have a copy of Perl installed and working.
The physical keyboard should work, I'm also running Tarkims keyboard remapper and the physical keyboard works well for me. Did you use my two cab files for enabling and disabling the CLI?
Also, please tell me more about Perl on your Windows Mobile phone, is there a binary (executable) or cab file I can install for Perl?
Please advise, thanks.

You can find Perl here
http://perlce.sourceforge.net/
Which version of Tarkim's keyboard remapper are you using 1.3.2 or 1.4?
I just checked and I am running tarkim's keyboard controller version 1.3.2, which seems to work perfectly with the command prompt.
I am wondering what you use Perl for on Windows Mobile? I have looked at the http://perlce.sourceforge.net/ site and I am interested in installing Perl, can you give me some background on its utilization on the mobile platform?
Thanks!
Here's the response from Touch_Pete (via PM):
Actually I haven't tried much more than a few test programs. But this is a full implementation of a very powerful and flexible programing language that would allow you to go way beyond Mortscript which seems to be a popular scripting language used on Windows Mobile to do all sorts of things.
Working Perfect on my HD2 using FingerKeyboard2.1 ... I was facing same problem with original keyboard

How to use SDK to root the phone?

Hi all,
I have just switched from the HD2 to the MT3G Slide and want to root the phone.
I knew how to do all the stuff on the HD2 from reading but cannot find any information here. The sticky placed on the top isn't much help because I know you need to use the Android SDK tool but I do not know how to set that up. & when I try to use the command line I cannot type in it. Please can someone give me some help on how to do this so I can get started on rooting my phone.
Thanks for reading!
you claim you read the sticky but yet if you had you would have seen the link on the first page i believe that tells you to get sdk from [link] and then on that page there is a link that says setting up SDK on your [OS] computer. then just follow the steps in there(which is really more like download file and double click setup) after that you can open up a terminal/console/cmd and type in cd \path to sdk\tools
if you are on mac or linux(unlikely since you can't read or search) you would type in
cd /path/to/sdk/tools notice how the slash between directories(folders) is the other way around
then follow the directions in the root thread(incredibly difficult i know but you should still try to do this part on your own)

Okay I have downloaded all of the Android SDK already. I have read it but my issue is when I try to type in the command it will not let me type. I also read that Anroid SDK is for xp & vista only and that windows 7 was not listed, so it this my issue? The command line you speak of is the one with the SDK tools and not the acutal windows CMD line?
I have followed everything to the line but still cannot seem to get this to work.
and to be clear I did read and there is nothing on there that states you need to have SDK to root the MT3GS. It says to download the slide_root

if you are using windows 7 x64(very likely) then you cannot use that computer and you should try using ubuntu(same as using mac for 99% of the steps and there is a thread in q and a talking about this right now) or setting up a virtual machine and installing xp and using that to hack your phone. virtual machines are easy to setup and use if you can use virtualbox

download virtual box right now. will that come with xp installed on it or would I need to download that onto it?
thanks for all of your help.
you will need to get an xp install cd or iso to install xp on it. if you have any friends with xp install disks or you can find one online and use it as a trial(no key=no activation=30 day trial) then you can use it for a day and root with that.
disclaimer: i suggest totally legal versions of windows xp, any install disk you download or get illegally is your fault when the FBI/Bill Gates comes to the door

Instead of suggesting that he commits a felony why don't you tell him to use Ubuntu in the virtual machine? It'll take a little longer but it's less likely he'll be fined.
i didn't say commit a felony, and if you are going to use ubuntu then you don't need a virtual box(dumbass) you can use a live cd. i have been told by microsoft on MANY occasions that if you have a friend with XP install disks then you may use those, as well as the fact that installing it for one day in a virtual box is not illegal if you are not using a cracked key/re-used key, you can choose not to use a key and it is a temporary install for yourself to use either until you get a key, or the 30 days is up. much like you can buy vista/7 and install a different version if you like, but you will have to uninstall it and reinstall using the version i bought a key for once the trial has expired. read up and do your homework before you jump down someone's throat, it makes you look like an ass when i have to come back in here and teach you what a computer is

Installing Drivers
Plug in your phone through USB and DO NOT MOUNT IT!!!!!
Your computer should see a new device and try to install Android 1.0 driver (If it doesnt, scroll down to the "Im not getting a notification of Android ADB when i plug in my USB" section)
Let it load
Once it cant find them select "Install drivers from my pc"
The drivers you need are in the Android SDK 1.5r2 folder (C:\android-sdk-windows\usb_driver)
Depending on your OS pick x86 or amd64
You ADB Android Device should now be installed! Good Job
When I do this part it doesn't find the ABD driver but it does not have anywhere to install drivers from my pc at all on my windows 7
edit: found where to go to add the usb drivers but when I select the folder all I get is "windows cannot find driver software on your pc"
edit 2: Found out what driver I needed, thanks for the guide source going to try to root this thing finally
