Dash speaker - HTC Excalibur

The speaker in my Dash has gone bad. There is one on eBay, but no way I'm paying $40 shipped for a speaker the size of a thumbnail. I saw there are HTC Touch speakers that look identical for $16 shipped. I don't suppose anyone knows if Touch speakers are the same? I asked the seller for dimensions, but no telling if they'll bother to answer.

Gnat, I have a spare Dash I got off Ebay that looks like crap ( on the rear) but I was able to use for parts (saved me when I got water in my Keyboard for sure). I can open it up tonight and measure the speaker for you if you like. Now all you need are the dimensions of the other speaker and you're all set

Thanks very much for the offer, but I already have the speaker out so I only need dimensions for the donor speaker. Although if you want to sell the speaker from your donor, let me know!
Hmmm, try soaking your bad keyboard in alcohol for a few days, then let dry for a few more. That just might work and you'd have 2 good Dashes.

Gnat, thanks for the tip. I may have to try that. Have u confirmed that the dash speaker's the same as the one u need? If so PM me and we can go from there

I'm in need of a new speaker as well. Mine just started having a tinny, crackled sound, and I can't stand it! Do you still have an available speaker for sale? Is it as simple as unplugging the old one and plugging in the new one? Any way I could inadvertently trash something else in the process?
Thanks!

Where were you guys when I was relentlessly searching for this blasted speaker WEEKS ago?! ((breathing hard)) Okay. It'd be wonderful if you could post the whereabouts of a speaker replacement when you find one. lol I can't seem to find any anywhere. There was one on eBay, but it disappeared into thin air!

HTC Touch speaker is the same. I ended up buying one from this seller e2_shop on eBay, here's a direct link to the Touch speakers they're selling: Link

There are plenty of damaged Dash's on ebay. They are just kinda pricey. I got one tonight, and it's on its way. I found this, http://pdasmart.zftp.com/instructions/T Mobile Dash Instructions.pdf
for getting into the Dash. For those of you that have replaced the speaker, is there anything more to it than shutting down, removing the back, unplugging the old speaker and plugging in the new one?
Thanks!

OMG, GnatGoSplat, I needed that link before I spent a fortune for a defective Dash just for the speaker! Oh well, you live and learn. I bought another from your link above because I need the tools to open the Dash. That was a great deal. Thanks for the link!

Glad I could help.
You don't even have to unplug the old speaker, when you take the back cover off, the speaker is attached to the back cover and those gold contacts touch some gold pads on the motherboard. All you have to do is use a small screwdriver or similar tool to pry the old speaker out. I think it's held in with a little adhesive. It comes out pretty easily.
I'm guessing your new broken Dash has a bad LCD? If so, you can replace the LCD and sell the Dash for a pretty good profit. I sold a repaired Dash for $163 once!

Guys I was just wondering if anybody knows where to find a dash shell? I have some deep scratches on the case of my phone and I have been trying to find a new OEM one for it so I can pull everything apart and change the case and clean it up.

EBay? google search?

I tried that but only came up with protective cases that you put the phone within.

search for OEM HOUSING not case or shell

Whoa, whoa, whoa... I don't think I'm on the same page. I was under the impression this speaker was for the earpiece. Do any of you know where to find a replacement earpiece speaker? My other Dash won't allow me to hear the other caller unless I place the phone on speakerphone or use a headset. When I use the phone regularly, I can't hear the other party speaking. Somebody, please...help!

That's the main speaker for speakerphone, ringtones, music, etc.
I don't have my Dash apart anymore and I didn't take any pics of it apart, so I don't know what the earpiece speaker looks like.
Best thing to do is probably to take it out and compare it to the one for other phones. If the Dash uses the main speaker from the Touch, could it maybe use the earpiece speaker from the Touch as well? Here is one on eBay. Pretty good pics on that auction for you to compare.

Great thats awesome. Can anybody confirm that part of the housing is also over the screen or would the scratches that I have be fixed by replacing the screen itself?

Im currently Doing a Tmo tp2 housing swap to ebay housing

Just letting everyone know that im changing the housing of my tp2 right now.
currently follow the directions from
http://translate.google.com/transla..._touch_pro2/&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.fi
I just swap the motherboard out to the new housing. At first glance the motherboards fits in the new housing perfectly. with usb and sd card slots accessible. I think I might lose the reset hole on the side but its really not a big problem from me. I will update my post as I go along.
This is the kind of housing I bought from a different seller off ebay china.

Wery interesting.
I was just wondering, what is the quality of this new housing, keyboard, slider...?

Any news??
Please do follow up how it went, and the quality of the housing.
At ~70$ a pop it's not quite cheap.
Pictures...
I am very interested in this as well. I would suggest taking some pics of the entire process though. I have thought about doing this as well. Don't know why Tmobile decided to make theirs look so fugly.

Zagg smartbuds, Updated, with a review

Zagg just released these new smartbuds ~ zagg /audio/smart-buds.php~, (can't post actual links yet).
some of there specs are
"Compatible with iPhone, iPhone 3G/3GS, iPhone 4 and all 3.5mm jacks"
I wonder if there "controls will work with Android or at least Double Twist
I went ahead and pulled the trigger on these things and here is what I think so far
Pros:
noise canceling mic (haven't tested it yet)
extensive cord management
armor covered cords, makes them tough and tangle free, REALLY!
built control works with Mixing app
comfortable
Cons:
a little flat in my opinion, compared to shure SE210 but mixing's equalizer made up for it
volume control is analog, it only controls the volume to the phones, independent to phone volume
Still doesn't have the remote functionality of some iphone head phones
I was really hoping to get a little more out of these. I have to say they a probably have the most feature for android users than any other head phones out there. They have one button and a slider on the "mic" part. The one button works like the one button for the latest shuffle, one click=pause, one click= play, double click=forward track, and triple click=back one track. The volume slide is analog so the range of volume depends on how loud the volume is set on the phone. Overall these are pretty good, I'd say the best for the money. the coating of the wires really does make them pretty tangle free. A good buy for $50, a better buy if you check slick deals for a coupon.
I hope they work well with me EVO
Well I just ordered a set of these as I think they will be perfect for work. Still haven't found what buttons will actually work with the EVO but if I can at least answer and hang up then they'll be way better then the Sony set I just returned. Plus I love the way there designed to wear. I have a set of Shure headphones that you wear like that and they are awesome.
it looks like they dropped the price to $50 on zaggs site. and I was able to get them for $40 with the discount code "ZAGG20"
I'll try and post back how well they work with my EVO when I get them.

Actually it's water mixed with baby oil. plus they come with a multipurpose squidgy q-tip. JK.
I really can't wait for mine to come in. I figured the volume control would be analog although I was hoping for digital. and I never really expected them to sound as good as my Shure se210's but when you consider the price difference and the terrible build quality on Shure's optional Mic (which only lasted 6 months for me tops. Which is the same problem I had for the original Shure extension cable) I'm sure I will be happy with them. I mean considering these have a longer warranty and cost the same as I paid for the Shure Mic alone I won't mind carrying these with me too work and risking damage. and my se210's can stay home by my computer where they belong.
Does the mic button work for answering a call and ending it?

well I just got mine in haven't got a chance to give them a good full test yet.
I have noticed that the button does answer incoming calls although it doesn't end them on my Evo running DamageControl V3.5. Instead it mutes the Mic. This is rather annoying and I hope theres an option somewhere to change that so I can hang up on people with out having to take my phone out.
I also haven't been able to get the previous track by triple pressing the button instead it goes forward a track and then pauses.
I'll give more info after I've had more of a chance to play around with them.
Edit: Ok so I did a little looking and it seems a long press on the button will end the call. So now I'm happy. So when in a call a quick press mutes the mic and a long press ends the call.
You probably couldn't run with these, huh. I need a pair of earphones/headphone that I can run with that has a remote so I can play and pause and skip without having to reach for my phone.
Check my signature for my review on the Nokia BH-214. It's bluetooth that costs me $48 shipped from Amazon! It can do all this can and more!

I'm not a runner but I don't see any reason you couldn't run with these. They fit in your ears pretty tight and with the slides you can adjust them so the cable won't tug them out your ear.

Please note that I haven`t used any bud-type headphones so I`m only speculating.

Well they do come with different sizes. But the problem with buds is if they don't seal then they don't sound right. Plus they would be more likely to fall out. Although I wonder how well it would work if you used the foam style tips and cut breather grooves. You would probably loose some sound quality if it worked but at least they shouldn't fall out all the time. If I get a chance to go to the track in the next couple of days I might try a few things but between rain and drama I haven't gotten over there yet.

everyone has different reviews, so you cannot use comfort for a reason to buy these. i went through 8 different models of bluetooths at bestbuy before i found one that was good.
yes they hated me for doing it, but that's their fault with the 30day return policy

Noisy keyboard?

Does anyone else have a noisy keyboard?
I just picked up my G2 and the keyboard keys sound like they have a thin plastic sheet under them or something and makes sort of crinkly plastic sounds if I touch them but don't push them down. It is a little bit annoying, makes the phone feel cheap.
I peeled off the protective plastic cover already from the keyboard so I am sure that isn't it.
Mine doesn't do this. I saw what you are talking about in some video review of the phone though.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Hmm, I might go back and exchange the phone. It isn't a huge deal, but it is driving me nuts right now.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Same problem here it kinda makes a noise but its not worst then typing on a pc with the keyboard clicking so it doesnt bother me. Also i dont use the hard keyboard much, I think i only use it like 4times since i had my g2(got it 9/30) and i type on it everything day post/sms/email/websites.
The vk is way better then the g1 probably due to screen size
So I was just at radio shack and the other phones they had there also had crackly keyboards. Just for comparison I went to the t-mobile store nearby and their g2's keyboards sound solid and have no crackling when you touch the keys.
Also, the t-mobile store was $50 cheaper than radio shack for an off contract phone. I am gonna return the radio shack one for sure.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Maybe the sound goes away the more you use it? and how much is it @ tmobile and radio shack? said done and out the door?
I paid $317.63 pre-order with upgrade. but i lucked out i got till nov 19 to paid it in full
I was wondering if the sound would go away, but I am unsure. The sound really sounds like a thin plastic sheet or membrane behind the keys that maybe isn't glued down or isn't supposed to be in there. The noise has been getting slightly worse over the last day or so. The floor model at the t-mobile store sounded perfect and had a nice click to the keys when pressed with no crunchy plastic sounds when you touched it.
I can't speak for the upgrade cost difference, but the full price I paid at radio shack was $600.86 out the door ($550 + tax). At T-mobile they have the contract free version for $499 so it will likely be $550 out the door (there might be a rebate involved in that price). This was in the San Jose area in CA.
then it could very well be something wrong with your phone mines jsut makes a click but from what your saying yours sounds like the off sidekicks were the keyboard would come apart and you get that nasty paper crunch sound. If so i would return it and get another one. You should still be within 30days returne so they shouldnt fuse about anything
Just returned the radio shack one and picked up a different one from t-mobile. The new one definitely doesn't have the nasty keyboard sounds the first one had. Oh and out the door it was $546.24 so it was over $50 bucks cheaper than buying from radio shack.
The only slightly lame thing was the one I got from radio shack had a really snug and crisp hinge. The new one from t-mobile is sort of loose and floppy. Oh well...
Are you sure it's not the back metal plate? I can feel the metal plate spring moving on the back when lightly pressing the keys.
I'm not a fan of the metal plate (mounts poorly!) And Z hinge as they are not an improvement over a G1 (loose and creaky too).

Yeah, I am sure it wasn't the metal back plate. You didn't even have to press the keys to hear the noise. You could just brush your fingers against the keys and you would hear all sorts of crumbly plastic sounds, sorta like the inside of the keyboard had a bunch of thin plastic sheet crumbled up inside it.
My I and O buttons sound like there is a plastic sheet beneath it.
And my phone is the Desire Z just got it today but im returning it.
I like the phone very much but the sound is just driving me crazy!
(Sorry for my english)

So you don't have a noisy keyboard?
I have this problem with only my www/.com key. It does make me go a little crazy sometimes when my finger grazes it when I'm typing.
Also, when i open my keyboard you hear a some sort of click.
I think that is the contact cable that "opens" up.
It's just weird and the phone is on it's way back now so i'm expecting a new one very soon.

[Q] Replacement Casing for Lumia 900

So i work for at&t and as such had the good fortune to win one of these amazing devices that I have decided to switch to as my main device over my Galaxy Note. That being said I really dont like the black finish and would really much rather have a cyan or white one. Is anyone aware of anyway to purchase replacement casing for them? And roughly how much they would run? With these phones being so easy to tear down I would much rather replace the casing than just buying a case for it.
I did a quick search and didn't find any replacement parts available just yet for the Lumia. But, I've never seen them not be available for a phone eventually, so I would stay on the lookout.
Ooops, did a quick look on ebay on found a cyan and black one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Blue-Origin...463?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item416480afd7. Guess these didn't come up on the Bing or Google search as they're the only ones. Better hurry

Its hard to tell from the pic if the speaker is in there. There is the black square part that is off-center at the bottom where the holes are but its not easy to see if it is a speaker or not but it has two gold contacts next to it. You might try asking the seller a question.
interesting that they have a "Make an offer" button but it auto-declines as I just tried $45 and it fails instantly.

[Q] Cover App

So I'm, guessing this feature utilizes a reed switch. Is it polarized? The reason i ask is, I got a cheap knock off of the Asus case. The cover app did not work. So I took a magnet and moved it around on the front of the phone. Still did not work. Dropped the magnet and when I picked it up and tried again, it worked. I then turned the magnet around so the other side was facing the phone, again it didn't work. With that knowledge, I tried putting the front of the case up to the phone. It worked, the circle app came on. I opened up up the case and moved the part that SHOULD be against the front of the phone around and nothing.
Obviously on my phone it is polarized. Should it be? If the authentic Asus case is of good quality I don't mind spending 40 bucks on one but I want to make sure there is nothing wrong with the phone first.

Buy the official one. I got it for free, but I would happily pay for it. It's worth it.
A lot of third party cases tend to fail with these features. They seem to just throw it together as fast as possible and don't test it properly to make sure it actually works.
Yeah, as long as I can determine that nothing is wrong with the phone I will. But should a reed switch only work with one side of a magnet?
Also, what is the quality of the authentic? Is it genuine leather? Does it seem like something that will hold up well?

The plastic that covers the circle feels kind of cheap, but everything else feels solid. No idea if it's real leather, doesn't really seem like it, but I could be wrong.
Thanks Harfainx. I just ordered one. I hope the polarization on the reed switch is normal and not a defect.

You definitely don`t have a reed switch in the phone, it will be a hall effect switch which will switch whenever a magnet comes close enough to trip it. N or S pole irrelevant in operation, its pure proximity. :good:
Thanks for that information. I've never heard of a hall effect switch, just assumed it was a reed switch since it's activated by a magnet.
So maybe something is defective with mine then. Like I said, holding the front of the case up to the screen activates it, but the back side, that should be against the screen doesn't. Guess I'll just have to wait till the authentic case arrives and see what happens. Off now to read up on hall effect switches.
Sorry for not following up on this sooner. My dog died last week and it's been pretty tough for me.
Got the original and it works perfectly. The knock off worked if I held the front of it up to the screen. So it seems the switch is polarized and it was put in backwards in the cheap one.
Quality isn't bad. And the tempered glass screen protector fits perfect with it. I've had a few people who saw it and commented on how cool the circle thing is. Well worth the 40 bucks.
