on my new Orange SPV m2000, i configured the keylock to lock everything but the power on/off switch. But.. when i receive an SMS, an eMail or when Pocket outlook wants to connect to the GPRS network (and wants to show me the little bubble saying that i'ts about to do so) then the keylock is being turend off (=the SPV is being turned on) and i can use all the keys and the touchscreen.
since i often receive SMS when my phone is min my pocket, i don't really like this kind of behaviour..
doesn't anyone have this problem too? to me it seems like a basic windows mobile problem the way things are being made... or is it just a configuration fault of mine?
any help is appreciated...

Same prob with XDAII
Don't want to hijack your thread... but i'm having the same problem with SMS.
But also, every time i receive a phonecall, the phone unlocks, and does not lock itself again. So if i have the phone on silent, it unlocks in my pocket, and then my phone starts calling people by mistake until i lock it again.
I enabled the lock all buttons except power button option but this doesn't work. The only additional software i have running on the phone is TomTom2 and Towa's patch if that makes any difference. ROM ver 1.60.50.
Any solutions? I may otherwise have to get rid of my trusty XDAII otherwise

Sorry, I dont have a solution, but my phone does the same.
Its as if the phones were designed on a desk, and no one bothered to try them in the real world.

Hmm... I don't have this problem on my XDAII and I don't think I ever had it. What ROMs are you XDAII peeps using? Standard UK O2 ROMs like me? (I'm up to 1.72 now.)
Wonder why my XDAII wouldn't have this problem but others might, unless it's a ROM problem.
This is a known problem with the Blue Angel, but not with the XDAII that I've heard of.

i think there is alternative way to minimize problem. you can set your password for your phone, then when there is incoming call or message, even though it will unlock all button, but before you use it, the unit will ask you password. so at least you will not miss call anyone anymore.
I'm having the same problem with my Pda2k.
I've disabled all but the power button. And I do have a password on the device.
I've had the following scenarios happen;
Scenario 1:
Every time I receive an SMS, the device powers up, waits for the password - If I don't hear it it then proceeds to stay on and drain the battery.
It just doesn't seem to go back to sleep.
BTW - the unit gets very warm...
Scenario 2:
Even when I do hear it, I often find that the unit is frozen - ie I try to type in the password, the asterisks show on screen but it seems nowhere after that. I'm running Pocket Plus, which has had problems with HTC devices - but I'm not running the today plugin at the moment.
Soft Reset is the only option.

Yes, i think we are all in the same boat here. The problem is that the device wasnt designed to be in your pocket (I know.. I know.. Pocket PC). Problem being, on recieving sms/mms/call the gsm part of the device sends the wake siganl to the O/S, causing the device to power on.
The simple solution as mentioned above is to lock the keys (password) but again as mentioned this can cause alot of power loss because the device will not sleep if your leg keeps trying to enter the password (in your pocket). I'm guessing that why so many people tend to use the belt clips with these devices. :?
I'm sure it will be in the next feature request so that only the LED indicator will change and flash if chosen but until then we all have to look like geeks with belt clips.
If anyone knows of a registry hack or app that can stop the wake signal form annoying us all the please post. :shock:

Same problem on my 9090. But I had this on my former crappy iPAQ 6340 too.
Here's a workaround which works for me:
Go to "Start -> Settings -> Sounds & Notifications"
then select tab "Notifications"
in the "Event"-dropdown select "Messaging: New text message" and uncheck "Display message on screen". Uncheck for "Phone: Voice mail" and "Phone: Missed call" too.
BTW: The warming device is just a feature: you don't have to buy a pocket hand warmer in winter!

Sorry if this has been asked before - I couldn't find anything leaping out at me.
I carry my XDA Orbit in a briefcase or sometimes some other bag, and in a jacket pocket.
I synch the calender with my Outlook data, which means I'm carrying a lot of reminders and appointments - one of the reasons I like the device.
When I'm mobile or not about to use the Orbit, I switch it off - and have the settings so that the only way to switch it back on is the power switch.
But calls in and reminders bring the device back to life - and from time to time the buttons catch on something and I end up dialling the last number called. Which I find annoying.
Does anyone have a way of fixing this or working round the problem?
You need to use the device lock, which in default settings is at the bottom of the today screen. If not you may need to re-enable the today plugin.
Also consider Slide2Unlock.
Batterystatus has an option for auto locking.
And Vijay555's device lock should still be hanging around here, as well as others.

I'm looking for an app that can enable & disable wifi at certain times of the day/days of the week etc.
Basically so that while I'm working, my wifi is switched off to preserve battery power, but when I'm out at lunch or home in the evening the wifi is on automatically.
I looked around the site at things like wifiprofiles app, and monsterwifi app etc but unless I missed something I don't think they allow shedules for when wifi automatically switches on & off do they?
Sorry if I'm being thick or missed another option!
you should check out phoneAlarm Pro -- I've been using this for years, it is a powerhouse of control for all sorts of things -- profiles (automatically switchable) include WiFi on/off as well as Data, Ringtones, Volume, Backlight, customizable alerts, etc. I could go on and on... this is my one and only "must have" app!
oh, and of course it's skinnable! you can find plenty of skins and support in the pocketmax.net forums...

In theory it's spot on, but in practise I can't get the automatic (scheduled) profile switching to work.
I set a time for it to swap from 'Out of hours' to 'Work' and noticed my phone still shows as having the ringer on even though I set the Work profile to be silent etc.
What I don't understand is the relationship between the profiles in this software and the profiles that the phone uses normally.
Ie when installed, I can't see anything that illustrates what profile this software thinks it is currently using, just the usual volume/ringer icon at the top of the screen.
If I change the system volume with the hardware volume button for instance, does this directly influence what profile gets used on Phonealarm? Or should Phonealarm disable the system related profiles/volume control etc?

yeah, it can get a bit daunting at times cuz it does so much...
can I assume you're on WM 6.5 and Manila/Sense? back in the day, phoneAlarm ran as a Today screen app (still can) -- but now with 6.5/manila it can run as a 'background host' -- so you don't really see it unless you call it up. you can have an Icon 'stick' to the taskbar, but I keep mine hidden and have a key shortcut to bring up "paHost". now, depending on the skin used, you can see what profile is active as well as alarms, status, time, weather, etc...
basically, the profiles 'overtake' the WM settings -- they're still there, just set by phoneAlarm. for example, you can still change the volume as usual, but on the next profile change it will be reset per the profile's settings.
the profile schedules and the custom email/sms alarm are probably the most difficult to understand (or to get working as you'd expect) -- I would recommend downloading the 'user guide' -- it explains things far better than I could here.
lastly -- get familiar with the forum! the FAQ and Support threads cover just about everything, and "Penguin" (the developer/moderator) is really very responsive to everyone's questions and/or needs.
maybe an example would be helpful...
here's how I do it -- when I arrive at work, I plug my HD into a cradle at my desk and it (usually) stays there all day. the ActiveSync connection triggers the "work" profile, which sets volumes/tones, turns on bluetooth headset, etc. etc.
now once I unplug it -- it switches to "car" profile, as I'm (usually) now on my way home. note the "on end" setting in screenshot #2.
when I get home, I manually switch to "home" profile. this would be where you could get into location-based rules -- from gps, cell tower, etc. -- to automatically know you're home, but I don't have them set up at the moment.
then, it will switch to "night" mode at 10:00pm, turning off bluetooth, data, lowering volume & screen brightness, etc. etc.
when I get to work the next day we start all over again. (also note weekdays, as in you could do something different on the weekends)

I think I've got the hang of it now after your posts and looking at the manual (I should have learned by now!). There's a few bits I'm not 100% certain about but it's mainly doing what I want and looks promising.
The phone is guzzling battery power since I installed it but I think I have found why. I have found that the wifi logo is visible all the time but red instead of blue, and previously this was not the case. I notice in the settings it describes toggling 'wireless lan' on or off but not perhaps in the same way as going into comm manager and selecting Wifi on or off. Not sure how I can get round but I need to make it turn off properly as it's burning my battery like the clappers!!
I like it though apart from teething problems!
I can make the SMS stop waking the phone via advanced config that is stock on my current ROM.
I want to keep my phone from coming out of sleep mode when I get a reminder. When it is in my pocket, I do not want it to wake up untill I take it out and push the button.

I'm a bit confused about what's being asked... it sounds like you're saying you don't want a reminded to remind you... you just want it to tell you that you missed it when you check your phone two hours after your appointment. Would you also, perhaps, like an alarm clock that doesn't make any noise when the alarm goes off?
it should not wake the device, as in "turn on the display, and react to touch" , so it goes bananas in the pocket.
It should play a sound, and/or vibrate and/or flash light - as configured in notifications.
- just don't activate the display...
in other words; same as with new SMS or Email notification..

I have the same issue. I have my phone synched with my work computer (outlook). I would like the reminders to appear on the computer only.
I've just upgraded to a Desire coming from a Touch HD (Dutty Holy Grail) and have to say that first impressions are not great. Seriously thinking about returning it but interested to hear other people's experience.
So far moaning about the following problems - well more inconveniences:
- keyboard too jumpy
- can't call contact directly from email
- no hardware button to end call - pain when leave a voice message as need to turn phone on, unlock it and then end call.
- double syncs everything (on exchange server) so that appointment entries appear twice in calendar
- the home screen apps are kind of useless as you basically need to launch the full app to be able to do anything (ie email or sms)
- sms messaging doesn't tell you how many letters you have left
- no messaging in facebook
- headphone volume quiet (and that's with in ear headphones where on my HD I had the volume set to 1!)
- battery life atrocious in comparison. charged my phone last night and had a full charge before going to bed and when I woke up it was at 30%. no wifi or bluetooth on.
Will persevere another few days to make sure that I'm not just a grumpy old fart who hates change....

I'll answer some of your points because a few are valid.
Could you elaborate on calling from emails? You mean the phone picking up that you have a number stored for a contact and allowing you to dial them? I've tried this and it works. You need to be using the HTC mail client, not the Gmail one.

I couldn't reproduce this use case at all. Your screen locks while you're in a call? A SHORT call too? Or are you just positing a use case you THINK could happen? The screen goes blank when you raise it to your ear and turns back on when you take it away...what you describe can't happen.
If you've got double syncing then there's a configuration error. Elaborate. How did you set it up? Are you syncing with your work email or a webmail account?
The home screen "apps" are not apps, they're widgets, and function like every other widget I've ever seen, they just give info and limited functions. You wanted to send email FROM a widget?!

Mostly because text limits have all but disappeared. Does your provider still cap you? You should get a new provider.
Your device is still new...you need a few charging cycles to get the battery at full potential.
The other issues are pretty spot on...the keyboard I'm used to now though. Trust the predictive text.

1. I have never seen that feature before. Would definitely be handy.
2. That annoys me too, but I guess it's just a matter of getting used to it.
3. Use a replacement SMS app. Handcent is my favorite.
4. Blame Facebook for that. They won't allow it, even in their official app which is stupid.
5. Strange, I have the impression that the headphone volume is quite loud.
6. You might have an application running in the background which is draining the battery and keeping the phone awake. See related threads in this forum for more info.
keyboard - Like all keyboards, it takes time to get used to. Trust the autocomplete feature and you'll be surprised. Best soft keyboard I've ever used.
Yes, you can call directly from email. Just tap the sender and their contact card will open which includes the option to call them.
No hardware call buttons - It's an inconvenience but you knew they weren't there before you bought it.
Exchange sync issue - Maybe something with your settings? I have it synced with Google's Exchange server with no problems.
Widgets - Yes, I share your opinion on many of the widgets. You might as well just launch the main application. They are pretty to look at though...
SMS - Perhaps download a 3rd party SMS application?
Facebook - no comment. I don't use it.
Headphone volume - I read here that some carriers limit the max volume on their devices. Perhaps they did that to yours? My device's max volume is pretty deafening.
Battery life - If you read reviews, you'll know that battery life is not impressive. But do give it several charge cycles and sync your data as conservatively as possible. You might find the battery life to be acceptable.

Actually don't worry been beaten ...
Like I said, the keyboard issue is just that you will need time to get used to it.
If you have a contact saved with a number and email and they send you mail, you will see their picture in the corner...tap it. You will get a speech bubble type box pop up that has the option to phone them, send them a message (text or email) or go to their contact card. Make sure you've merged your contacts. It won't work if you have a separate contact card for their phone details and then another for their email.
Again...is SMS length an issue still for people? I've not thought about those arbitrary 140 character limits since my first Motorola Wings flip phone.
Compared to my HD2 the Desire's keyboard is a DREAM to use - HD2 was skitty as hell and all over the shop. Desire's never misses a key and can type a LOT quicker on it personally...
Never bothered to know number of characters left in an SMS, doesn't bother me
Battery life, with all sync options on default, is about 48hrs give or take an hour...
Double sync IS annoying but I don't sync with Google anymore so got rid of that...
Facebook app, don't care about messaging as my phone is to keep up-to-date, PC is to contact...
Not bothered about hardware key for end call, call ends when you press the BIG red button at the end of a call (don't need to unlock or anything first)
Headphones - don't use them as phone isn't a music player to me, it's a phone
1. Get used to it, you will be fine. I moved from HTC Kaiser with hardware keyboard and I found the HTC Desire virtual keyboard is very good and responsive.

5. Widget is nice, this is unique to Android. You dont have to use it if you dont like. Then put app shortcut in the home screen, typical winmo thingy.

8. Check your settings, my battery life is amazing, on moderate usage it could last more than 48 hours (this include several hours (2-3) a day browsing on WiFi and gaming).

RE: battery life
I charged mine to 100% last night, took it off charge at 1am, woke up at 8:20 am, checked my phone....98% !!
i use Juice Defender (one of my settings is to disable Apn/Wifi from midnight till 8am, works well

Syncing is being done with a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. But I think I may have just solved issue as it appears to sync both with my laptop and the server without realising they are showing the same appointments. Just too used to MS ActiveSync which works it out.
The keyboard is still bugging me - have tried to train it using the calibrate option but still seems off. That is the top row of keys that I push match up but when i go to the second last row it always hits the last row which being space and punctuation tends to terminate the word.
Anyhow will persevere. Appreciate everyone indulging a grumpy old codger...

If you hold the phone under a bright light you'll see the sensors in the top left corner of the black bezel. To test it, make a call and then move your thumb over the top left corner and then away again...the screen should turn off when your thumb gets near and turn back on shortly after you move away. Call your voicemail box or customer service
For sms use handcent its brill and it gives you letter count.For facebook i use babbler as it gives you notification for inbox.

BetterKeyboard plus the accompanying DarkGray theme is by far the best Android keyboard out there. HTC_IME (i.e. the HTC keyboard you're hating on) seems to be well thought of in the community but I personally hate it and think BetterKeyboard wipes the floor with it.
A few thoughts
- I just want to add a few thing giving that I also came from an HD. Compared to the HD which only had a light sensor, the Desire also comes with a proximity sensor that monitors if you have your ear close to the phone regardless of light (on the HD the screen only turned off if it was day and it could actually sense a difference in light).
If you make a call and put your phone to your ear it turns the screen off WITHOUT locking it, and when you want to terminate a call by taking it from your ear it will turn on again but not locked.
The phone locks itself only it you don't activate the proximity sensor (like when you are using a bluetooth headset and you don't take to phone to your ear). When that happenes the screen turns off after 15 seconds and yes, if you turn it on then it will be locked.
- Why do you want a hardware button for call and end? The capacitive screen with the combination of the proximity sensor makes them useless?
-Another thing i can chip in is related to the sms thing. The default SMS app shows you the number of characters left and the number of messages already typed when you are nearing the end of a message.
It shows that above the send button. If you have less the 10 characters available in that message it'll show 10/1 above the send button, and it will decrease and then turn into 145/2 saying that you have 145 characters left untill reaching 2 messages. After that it'll stay on and counting without dissapearing, until you send the message.
I find this to be a goog feature because it only warns me if i exceed one SMS.
I have used it for 2 days, and I am out of space installing apps on the HTC desire. WTF.. it can't use the 16 gig memory card to install apps and games?
There is no way I'm going to Win MO again.. but seriously.. WTF.

Yeah the keyboard issue is due to the resistive v capacitive screens. The resistive screens need a good push, the capacitive ones need a slight touch. You get used to it.
for facebook, a new version is downloadable which give access to your INBOX.. which is what i assume was meant?
