Suggesting New Ingredients for Cooking Tasty ROM's - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Hi there i feel there's a need for a thread such as this where anyone can post and suggest any good applications which he/she feels should be part of a ROM.
1) My first suggestion would be an application call QuickMenu. i put a pic down there. It is a really cool windows xp-type start menu, so you dont need to go through all folders. it replaces the retro start menu Windows Mobile has.
2) My second suggestion is this one called " T-Mobile Soft Key ". it provides the custumisation of the soft keys in the home menu.

Start Menu by dotFred
Hmmm... I think dotFred has something similar to your suggestion. I think he's still working on it.
Code:
[URL]http://www.dotfred.net/FdcStartMenu.htm[/URL]

I would like to think I have fairly normal size hands and these type of menus are just too small for me to use with my thumb..
I dunno who you guys do it without hitting the wrong thing all the time.. nice apps though gonna have to check them out.

It would look like ass, but you could put a separator between each menu. That would probably space them out enough.
Or you could use the scrollwheel.
My addition to this is WM5NewMenu. Super small, super light and totally useful. It is basically a customizable new menu ala WM2003. It has tons of options, but my favorite is the ability to set a new SMS/Call to a specific person. It beats the hell out of opening the Messaging app and searching through the contact list.

I agree
the point is to use your stylus not your fingers.
so the menu is appropriate

This is really different from the one posted here. This one does not replace the windows start menu.

Personally, I have a few apps that I'd like for 2 different ROMs
Lite ROM like CRC's could use HTC Album, ClearTemp, and the latest Schaps Config.
I'd really like a custom ROM built on a VERY lite ROM, with the SPB Apps cooked in (un regged of course, I have them all licensed and can add after hard reset) PocketPlus, mobileshell, and phonesuite cover a fairly broad feature set of all the freeware and such built into the Full ROMs. Building them in might save a bit of space and possibly make them quicker. It would be a fairly custom build and I i'd only expect licensed users to get the benefit of those apps... but quite frankly, they are top notch apps with lots of features worth paying for. Makes it hard to go back to the freeware/HTC apps

Yes, thank you roomtek. WM5NewMenu is quite different from QuickMenu. I use both together and almost never have to use a stylus or my fingers.
While it is nice to have some apps cooked-in, one problem is that once an app is updated then the cooked-in software becomes out of date.

i agree, but there are some app's that never get updated. such as mobile word, powerpoint and excel, calc1-lite, audio manager, E-Java, PIM backup,Screen capture, HTC-Zip,etc.
Besides a new ROM comes out almost every month, and most basic apps dont get updated that much...

Controlling the device from The desktop via usb
There is also an app which is very very small in size <100kb for microsoft CE devices, called " remote display control ", and it could serve as a good ingredient for a ROM. The application is built by microsoft, so it's virtually bug free.
The app can be included into a ROM because unlike other app's it is hardly updated, as you can see this version was created in 2001.
I really like this application cause i can use my mouse as the stylus to operate the device, which appears as a 240 x 320 window on the windows desktop PC, as long as my Windows mobile phone is connected to the PC.
It works on my WM6.1 Rom, despite how old the app is.

Task App with Sliding Panel Support

Cool idea for Sliding Panel
Hello group, I was loking the panel today, getting to know it better and I realized that the Tasks are not in there; it would be great to have a Sliding Panel to view your Tasks by Categories or at least by Due Date with a similar interface like the Calendar where you can create a task but with the option to select a category eg. Inbox, that would be awesome option; since you all helped me with the Vanilla OS which I plan to use Rickys v14, I would give the contribution to this project.
So to recap here is what I would want from this panel option or addon:
1. Have a panel for the Tasks that shows you which task s are due
a. Today
b. Past Due
c. to create a Task into a category called Inbox
or if all those options are too tedious to code just option C would be good.
So there you have it, anybody interested please let me know.
Thanks in advance
ps. is there a way to backup your current ROM just in case you want to put it back
Dude, You JUST TOOK THE WORDS OUTTA MY MOUTH!!!
I don't know how I forgot to post this but I've always wanted tasks in my sliding panel, infact, more than appointments, I would use tasks anyday.
I'll see what can be done about this. Thanks for reminding me.
P.S: I have use for this, big time as I really need it for school and for personal productivity.
EDIT: Yes, there is a way to backup everything. Google Sprite Backup or SPB Backup (Either are good, I think SPB would be more stable, haven't tried it yet but sometimes, Sprite doesn't copy over everything properly)
Awesome
That's funny, telepathic minds, but yeah this option would be super useful for anybody, after all the native Task app is so old school this would spice things up a lot, for productivity this would be superb, I'm envisioning a nice Vista like icon to match the cool Calendar icon wow I can almost taste it, lol, well hopefully somebody can help with this cause.
Why not work that idea plus calendar functions into the CAppointments panel somehow? There are only two pages there, and they're all about the same general theme... Task, To Do, Calendars, Appointments, etc.
Can you explain further

If you mean me, then not really... I've only been playing with WM and my phone for two days. Really new to this stuff... but I was just throwing what I thought might be good ideas out there.
Well, hopefully somebody with programming experience can chime in
Showaco, Outerdepth or Organic - These are your guys.
I'm in need for this app. Who can help us out?
I think it'd make a good app since most of us need some task management.
Another idea how about making a panel to launch either google maps or the actual live search app, not the crappy Live search on IE and as a bonus a panel for Jivetalk, wow the possibilities are endless, if only I knew how to program

What rom are you running? Ricky's V24 has a "My Programs" panel that you can customize to add various apps using CHome Configurator. I added Live Search to it in about two minutes, with the majority of the time spent trying to find the Live Search icon in the file system.

Oh really, the actual Live Search application with all the modules, eg. weather, maps, movies etc. Sweet, I have to update my OS to that one, question for you, how fast is it and memory efficient, I tried to upload it but I got an Error 260 hopefully I'll have a little more time and upload this OS, I'm dying to try it.
Cmon, Guys. Someone look into this. I'd love me a Tasks App on the sliding panel. I actually would love to work on this but too bad, I don't know what to do and don't have the time right now. If anything, I'll look into it this weekend and see if I can come up with something.
yes, please someone rescue this idea, imagine being able to input task right the panel, that would be great, then as icing on the cake - create that task to a specific category, OMG, that would be golden better than the Dark Knight lol
this would hands down be the most used app for me everyday.
Good morning, does anybody know of a task app that has support for the Sliding panel to at least view your task, I know it can't be done with the native task app but perhaps a 3rd party app, if anybody knows please let me know. thanks
I would love to see Task sliding panel, so
*Bump
This would be the one of the most used things on my phone if it could be done.

[App][BETA] Kill**** - process killer

This is my first app for WinCE so please be nice!
Rant
It seems I'm part of a minority of users who understand that mobile devices and PDA's are not designed to run multiple apps at once. You can, but anyone with a decent sense of quality will agree that it's a rubbish experience once you get under 50% free memory. In fact the iPhone by default design doesn't let you multi-task apps (jailbreak changes this) which may be one of the reasons peeps think its a faster device. I say I'm part of a minority because most apps around are coded so that when you hit the 'x' close button they minimize instead of close (even by holding x). Also Windows has no inbuilt mechanisms for keeping your apps closed, and none of the roms I've tried (cooked or otherwise) seem to have these types of tools included.
Disclaimer
Firstly I hope I haven't reinvented the wheel or stolen anyone else's idea. I didn't research for months but didn't find anything like this around so apologize in advance if I upset anyone. Also I provide this tool "as-is" in BETA form - so it could damage your device - so use at your own risk.
Kill****?! What is it?
It is a simple app that kills running processes.
Why would I want it - what's wrong with Task Manager?
A common example is you open up Calc to do divide a dinner bill, lookup how to get home in Google maps, send an SMS to a friend and hit Home key. Then you wonder why the thing is running like a dog. You open task manager and notice you have these 3 freakin apps are open still and taking up your memory. So you're expected to open Task Manager after every time you're finished with an app?...no I dont think so..because you've got Kill****! You manage an exemption file, assign the app to one of your softkeys (or events) and it will quickly, quietly kill all other **** running for you.
How Does It Work?
It stores a text file on disk with names of processes that you wish to exempt. You can manage this via the included config tool. When you run the app (which is a console app) it just kills every running process other than the ones on your exclude list. The exclusion file is stored in your default MyDocuments folder and is called something like "NoofnyKill****.settings". Real simple.
What Do I Need To Run It?
Microsoft Windows Mobile (4 and above)
Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 3.5
How Do I Install It?
Simply run the attached CAB and everything is installed for you. 2 icons are added to your Start Menu (the config tool and the console app itself). The app is installed in the default Programs folder.
How Do I Use It?
If the exceptions file does not exist it will be created new and will contain all of the running process at the time the app ran.
The best instructions are;
1) Have your device in your preferred state with only your basic apps running.
2) Open the config tool from the start menu (Kill**** Config).
3) All of the running processes will list with a check next to them (which 4) means they will be exempted).
4) Click Menu -> Save Exceptions and close the config tool.
5) Assign the console app (KilL****.exe) to one of your softkeys or other buttons using your favorite tweak tool.
What Else Do I Need To Know?
I am not responsible for anything negative or positive this app will do to you, your device or life. Use at your own risk. I have not tested this app well and can only guarantee that I have fundamentally screwed something up. If anyone does use it and wants help I will do my best but try to help by giving as much detailed info as possible when reporting any bugs. I'm open to suggestions and are planning to put the source code up here if anyone shows interest.
That's about it - hope it makes someone's life a little brighter.
Hi!
This looks interesting. Is there anyway to cook this into a ROM properly? I dont like to have users make a file in their my documents folder.
Cheers

Thanks...i can have the file live anywhere really, I just chose MyDocuments cause its easy and accessible. It's easy to even have them define in the config tool where they want to save the settings. I'm new to mobile dev and the whole rom cooking thing, so could you expand about what would be needed to cook this app into a rom?
actually after giving it more thought it would be more practical to store this in the registry. I chose to use a text file at first because I was not going to bother have a config app and you could modify it using notepad or something.
In registry would be the most preferred method yes.

Im a developer, I know some basics. Give me ideas.

As the title says, Im a developer but I dont know anything majorly complicated.
I want YOUR ideas for something to make.

Read/write/create text files
Simple or even more complex UIs (nothing too extreme though)
most of the basic stuff

Maybe a new app to replace and improve SmileySMS ( development is stopped, and on windows mobile we can't have smileys in sms without this buggy app).
I wish a prog for my HD2, very simple : Use Webradio (with url) as ringtone !
Hi Cris,
I am looking for an app that can do the following:
Disable the touchscreen.
Why?
It's annoying when you watch movies and accidentaly touch the screen (especially with core player).
The app would have to disable the touchscreen after a set time, so you have enough to start the movie (or other application).
A certain area of the screen would have to be defined as touchable, so that you can disable again. Maybe with a gesture? ie. swipe from bottom left hand corner to top right???
just an idea

I would like a app that does the following:
All for the Sense music tab!
When NOT in a call:
Long press : Play / pause
Pressed twice : Next song
(If possible:
Pressed three times: previous song
pressed shot : call)
When you are being called:
short press: pickup / hangup
PLUS
The hardware buttons (buttons on the PHONE) MUST be disabled,
But ONLY when the headset is plugged in!
With no headset plugged in everything should be as normal!

Great Greet Giblet
I've actually been pitching this one around but no luck yet ... A small GPS toggle cmd app. Here's an OSS project that may have usefull code.
What I would like it to have is:
1- Commands to toggle GPS on or off
2- Stay running and output number of connected satellites and connection status (position fixed/not fixed) as a reg name/value
3- Maybe other stuff (like coordinates, hour/date, update system time... but what I really want is the first point 1 and 2).
Why would I want such an app? To add a GPS connection manager to my today screen HS++ skin (also maybe make a script that will only launch my device navigation software when it has a position fix).
PS:
Other stuff I'd like to see are either other small cmd apps or small updates/fixes of some OSS apps like GSFinder+ or even emulators (small stuff like adding onscreen controls using existing sources, emulate mutli touch or improving controls by mixing the use of oncreen keys with hw ones or minor GUI standardization and fixes related with new devices screen resolution).

Slide2Action
Hi cris, How about a simple slide to do anything? Just a scrollable list of blank sliders that you can assign a function too, eg launch an app, blank screen, reset, close all, new message, WiFi, bluetooth etc. the list could be endless. Just a scrollable action screen with sliders instead of buttons. Transparency would be a bonus for a nice visual.

Hi Cris,
if you can consider my suggestion to develop a "shopping List" + "Inventory" apps I think is not that difficult to develop. It almost similar to like any shopping list app & you be able to keep track of the inventory list maybe with photo or pic is good enough.
pls do consider this apps, as both iPhone & WinMo still do not have such app yet. If you do build up, you will be the 1st to come out with.

The UI Design and Interaction Guide for WP7

So, who have had time to look at the UI Design and Interaction Guide? I see everyone's busy discussing and defining multitasking, but isn't this newly released document the most interesting thing to have come out of Mix so far? I think.
I've just skimmed through it but first of all I love that Microsoft FINALLY provied a sleek GUI framework out of the box for app development! Of course, it was expected with Silverlight support and all, but it's nice to get it confirmed. I'm talking about stuff such as
-Gesture support
-Finger friendly controls
-Smooth scrolling panels
I know all these things have been possible before, but not with ease. Coming from the .NET CF world, I've had to spend a lot of time enabling such featurse in my apps. And they're not as slick as I expect them to be in WP7.
The UI is what most needed improvement for the apps on Windows Phones to be competitive with iPhone apps. This will lower the threshold for developers to create smooth, impressive apps. This will increase competitiveness for Windows Phones, which in turn will benefit us, the developers - enlarging our market.
Agree? ..or are most guys at this not that concerned with monetizing on their apps?
I've downloaded it but not had chance to look through yet as I'm at work.
Whilst I'm pretty unsure still about the whole marketplace-only, no FS support stuff, I am quite excited about the new development stuff. Like you say, nice interface controls will be there ready to use instead of having to rely on hacks and third party stuff to achieve something approaching half-decent.
I'm glad this is available already, the more time the better, and it makes sense really as MS will want their appstore pretty well populated at launch to compete with iPhone and Android.

I did. Found out that there are no file open/save controls. Immediately realized that until a jailbreak comes out there's no way I'm buying a WP7S phone, despite the many things I love about this new OS.
Only 4 "accent colors" plus 1 manufacturer color.
The accent colors are ORANGE, RED, BLUE and GREEN.
Why 4? Why cant the user change it from color palette selection?
I would love to use BLACK or DARK BLUE or blue grey ala iPhone !
I just cannot understand this accent color limitation
if found something interesting in the guide. a windows mobile 7 handy have same number of buttons as a hd2 .
1. Power/Sleep
2. Volume
3. Screen
4. Camera
5. Back
6. Start
7. Search
So, the only difference is the layout.
It's a very valuable document, thanks.
We'd like Microsoft deliver more samples to provide a sort of a framework with frequently used patterns.
In any case Silverlight applications look fantastic.

Yea just like other other weird things that could be easily implemented, like multitasking, cut & paste, file system access, and having a user accessible SD card slot.
I don't know if you saw the leaked specsheets for the Dell Lightning, but that thing comes with an 8GB miniSD card, user-upgradable.
Yes, it is upgradeable if you don't mind voiding your warranty and tearing apart your entire phone. On the plus side however, removing the battery cover on my Rhodium to get access to the SD slot doesn't seem quite as annoying anymore.
