Better dialer for Imate 8502? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

hi. Anyone got any suggestions for a better dialer for this candybar phone with front facing keyboard?
All I can seem to find are HTC type ones that require a landscapre view to be able to dial directly from the letters on the keyboard (as opposed to numbers).

Better dialer for 8502
I second this. I have installed HTC Touch Dual Dialer and it works great except you cannot use the hardware buttons only the screen buttons.

Found a great solution.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395086

One problem I have found with alternative dialers on the 8502 is that the "disable touchscreen while on call" option doesn't work any longer.
Does this dialer still allow the screen to remain locked?

i-mate 8502: Anybody sells display or phone? /¿alguién vende pantalla o teléfono?
Good afternoon, folks
I was relatively happy with my i-mate ultimate 8502 till I dropped it and the display broke.
As I'm against buying new stuff if you can at a reasonable price fix something, I'm asking:
is anybody willing to sell almost altrusistically a display or even the whole phone? We could do it through the normal channels (paypal, google, ebay, whatever). Or in person, I'me based in Spain.
Warm regards,
Manuel

Disable camera ?

We are looking to purchase a number of SPV M2000 and C500 phones from Orange.
Due to the nature of our business we can not take camera phones on Customer's sites.
Orange are not being very helpful on this so I am investigating how we can disable the camera function on these phones.
I have already considered supergluing something over the lens or even a drop of superglue on the lens.
Any other suggestions ?
The blue angel is also sold with a non camera version.
T-mobile has it that I know. As for orange, no idea.
If anybody from your company got one of those hacked phones and like you found this site they would most likely also be able to fix what ever fix that made on the software or hardware to prevent them from using the camera.
I was thinking about even deleting the phone software off them ?
Hum, like I said, you found this site so why should the others not?
Its on our FTP site even with the new Album version (camrea software that is).
BTW May be deleting the phone software is not such a good idea just in case you want to use it as a phone (since you want to stop others from using it as a camera). But I think I got what you meant (grin)
wanna trade ?
I have a Siemens SX66 (blue angel) without a camera
(just kidding - its my only mobile and I have no idea who you are )
Yeah, the Siemens SX66 from Cingular here in the USA does not have the camera. Many of us are disappointed in its absence. You could find a way to get the Siemens units from the US.
Why in the world buy a Blue Angel to disable the Camera and THE phone?????
The Qwerty and Wifi can't be that much worth.
Anyway, like MDAIIIUser says, no matter what you disable or no matter what lock you put on it, it's quite simple to undo and get a fully working BA, well except for the glue on the lens that is

One handedness!

Forgive me if this has been discussed before!
I am seriously considering getting the Xda Orbit, but am slightly hesitant because of the lack of keyboard. My pda background is Palm, my current model being the treo 650. I have never owned a PPC/WM5 device!
I have a dislike for using the stylus to 'poke' the screen for input and have often shied away from apps that require stylus input. Clearly I am going to have to overcome this 'illness' if I get the Orbit
I know its early days, but can anyone tell me to what extent can I expect to avoid stylus use with the Orbit? I am thinking in terms of when I have to send sms text and the odd email plus quite a lot of appointment entering usage. I guess this boils down to how much 'One handedness' there is in WM5.
TIA
Hey I am exactly same as you. I hate poking with stylus as I am more used to using Nokia phones.
I love Spb software based Full Screen Keyboard this allows me to use my fingers to type.

There is Phonepad for you to use.
My XDA Orbit arrived 2 days ago, works like a charm, but..... i cannot find the "phone pad" option for inputting. The Prophet had it, but not the Orbit.
Does anybody know if this is just the Orbit? or does the HTC version have the phone pad missing as well?

You need to install it. Search the forum

upgrade to orbit? yes or no?

o2 have offered me an upgrade from my IIi to the orbit. As some of you have been using the orbit for a little while is it all it's cracked up to be?
and does tomtom work ok with the orbit and the built in gps reciever?
cheers guys
Go for it you will love it if not sell it many will be after it if you don't like it.
Or you could wait for the zinc (feb 07 or so) if you can do without the gps in-built?
There is an issue with MicroSD's that possibly dosnt effect all units. See other threads.
Apart from that and if you clock it to 250MHz it works extremely well. I loved my BlueAngel but even my old stylus feels fat now. The jog dial / track ball is mega and internal GPS a breeze. The slower CPU also has the benefit of longer battery life.
I am currently looking for one for a friend on eBay and they are going for £300+ so if you dont like it can always sell and keep old phone...
ps. I use a Sandisk UltraII 2gb MicroSD which may speed up map access etc, its generally slightly slower than my 500MHz BlueAngel but no problem.
I'm a new user of the Xda Orbit, my first WM PDA after owning a tapwave zodiac and the first phone I can really type text messages on. For a PDA it's light, snappy (my last wm device was a Compaq Aero 15xx), has an excellent battery life and the GPS works a treat.
The biggest benefit is the size, though, compared to the other similarly featured Xda's in the o2 lineup this one is TINY, it dropped the jaws of my techy colleagues to the floor.
I find TomTom to be pretty fast and accurate getting a fix, route calculations are fast enough, but it is a little slow to start up initially- overclocking helps but not much. I have overclocked to 260 for PocketSNES and on other occasions but find it normally fast enough to be comfortable - quite a feat with a meer 200mhz!
I'd say go for it, I'm posting this message from Mine now! got 3 tabs open text-mode in NetFront- browsing perfection!
I have had the following:
XDA II
XDA IIs
XDA IIi
XDA Exec
And recently upgraded to the Orbit. I must say that it is the closest I have come to being 100% happy with an XDA.
Had no idea how compact this device is. No more holding a brick to your ear, this is an aesthetically pleasing device - even for non PDA'ers.
I haven't found anything that doesn't work yet. I thought the GPS would be just another gimick and there was no way it was going to work properly without an external antenna - WRONG! Stick TomTom 6.02 on it and away you go. Managed nearly seven hours of GPS directed driving before the battery got too low (have now got a car charger).
I have been waiting for a device that combined all the functionality of a good PDA and phone in a phone size package and here it is.............and they throw in a GPS and FM Radio to boot.
and one more thing if you get a decent set of headphones (either buy an adapter or do a bit of DIY soldering) it's a pretty decent MP3 player too. 2GB micro SD from Moby Memory for about £40 and painless synching with Media Player 11 and your away.
The main reason I have a PDA phone is for Terminal Server. I provide software support and it gives me the freedom to get out of the House/Office and still be able to support my Clients. I was always able to justify carrying around a house brick (EXEC) because of this. Now I don't have to this phone is great and I have to say it ..... Gorgeous.
OK now it's out - I love my Orbit!!!
Go get one - I'm pretty sure you'll be happy!
Hope this helped!
Since a couple of weeks ago, I'm also the proud owner of a HTC P3300, after owning a Qtek S100 for a year and a half.
I'm truly very happy with my new P3300.
Almost all of the features have been mentioned in other replies to your post (and I agree with them), so, I want to add that, despite having the same 64Mb of RAM as the S100, it seems to me (I'm no expert) that memory management works better (probably WM5 instead of WM2003 has something to to with it) than it did on the S100.
Also the new 2Mpixel camera works very well, the picture quality is very good. It doesn't have flash or 'macro mode' selector, but I can live without it.
The phone capabilities are good (I had a lot of problems with the S100 not relating phone numbers to names or contact photos).
Apart from a little problem I had with activesync (mentioned in another thread and already solved) it's been working perfectly.
As for the GPS softwares, I use Destinator 6 (instead of TomTom) and Navitel (with custom Madeira map) for navigation and both of them work perfectly.
Bottom line, and yes, I'll be repating myself, I'm very very happy with my P3300.
regards,
thanks for the advice guys! looks like im off to get myself one then!
How about InfraRed capability?
I currently own a Mini S and I'm really keen to upgrade to the Orbit. I've however found that Orbit seems not to have an InfraRed port. So I wouldn't be able to use it as a TV remote control. Can anyone please confirm? Thanks.

I asked HTC about making this device with consumer grade IR and 3G to make this a complete device. This is the response i got from HTC.
"Thank you for getting in contact with HTC regarding your recommendations and support. its more than likely a phone will come out with the functions you have asked. Its a case that at the moment a trade of as to be implemented due to technology reasons due to the GPS functions incorporated in to the phone, which requires other hardware to be dropped from the phone. The GPS being implemented is still fairly new concept and even through I don't have details of future phones its only a matter of time before it happens. Personally i'm waiting for a phone/GPS with slide out keyboard, which again can only be a matter of time.
Thank You for your comments"
All in all adding IR and 3G would make this one compact complete device. Use it to control your gadgets, navigate you around when driving, using it for phone and all manner of PPC functionality with virtually every connection option. One day it will be reality.
Just a snippet from HTC
Hope that helps.
Absolutely YES
Look at my signature, I've worked with nearly all HTCs from an early stage. If you can live without a keyboard, this is THE device to have at the moment.
HTC are nearing perfection!
Best device ever released (excluding the Universal for business use, still unbeatable).
I just got one - having been through the magician (which the wife now loves and uses) and the exec (which I still use as an excellent business tool) I have got to say that I am bowled over by the Orbit/3300 - WM5.0 AKU3, GPS, great screen, brilliant battery life (I get 3 days moderate usage out of mine between charges - 10 calls per day, push email on 18 hours per day, occasional GPS use!
GET ONE - U WILL NOT REGRET IT - and per other posts, if you don't like it I am sure it will get snapped up on EBAY

Keyboard less Responsive Problems

Gents I just wan to collect some ideas or experiences on my issue. since few weeks my keyboard giving me troubles. Some of the keys are less responsive and need more pressure to type correctly. I am not sure whether it is the rubber membrane or the keypad. Anyone has such experience and any idea what can be done to fix it? Obviously I don't wan to spend 250-300 USD to buy complete set of Keyboard for my old Universal
Not That I Know What Causes It But I Too Would Like To.
Since Having My Brand New G4 Replaced With A Nearly New G4 Device, (Due To A Broken USB Port)
I Too Experience This But Only With The Number 6 Key. (Haven't Noticed Any Others Yet)
If Anyone Knows Why And If Its Fixable Please Let It Be Public Knowledge.

Uni Replacement keyboard,case source
Hi, my USB connector pulled out, so I have been searching for parts & accessories sources. This is just one of many I have found: NEW OEM FULL HOUSING CASE + KEYBOARD FOR I-MATE JASJAR $56.00 total http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=160242894972&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=006
I am a beginner JasJar owner/user, so most of that I read on this web site is greek to me, but interesting copy. Maybe I will learn something, or not? I love my JasJar and I am sure I am using a minimal of its capabilities. I have a 1gb card in use and an 8gb card it does not see, an Spanish Dictionary card it does not see or I cannot access. I am sure it needs to be upgrades from WM5 to WM6, but I am not proficient enought to do myself. After copying the correspondence there appears to be many versions of WM6 with varying drawbacks. I will continue to read ya'alls correspondence and input when I feel I can assist. Hugh

zoom (2-finger gesture) only works if you touch the case

Hello,
Greetings from Germany.
I have the following problem with the XA2. The 2-finger gesture (for example, to zoom on a map) only works if you touch the case somewhere.
If the smartphone is lying on the bed or table, multitouch will not be detected in 90% of the cases.
This is particularly annoying if you have the smartphone in the car in the holder and wants to zoom in the Navigationsapp.
If I touch the outside of the smartphone it will work again.
I have loaded the multitouch test app from the app store and these tests confirm the finding.
Does anyone else have the problem too?
See the Videoclip down below.
Here is a little Videoclip to show the Problem:

here in Maps:

Yes, my phone behaves the same.
Thx for reply. In german android help forum there are users with the same problem:

Fortunately it's still better than it was with XA1, where there were problems with non-responsive at all touch areas.
Actually it's not that big deal for me, as I'm not using the phone as car navigation usually (I have other device for this).
But yes, it might be inconvenient if you try to single-hand operate the phone while it's just on the table.
At least I do not want to be satisfied with that error. It costs too much for that. In the German forum someone has his xa2 for repair at Sony. I do not believe that they can handle it but if so I'll fix mine and keep it. otherwise I will buy the XZ1 which cost no more than the XA2 today and had some better specs. In the hope that there is no such problem.
someone from the German forum exchanges his device, in the hope that a new device does not have this error. You would then also see if it is a general error that affects all devices or if there are only problems in the error-free production.
