need moderator??!! - About xda-developers.com

i think the diamond section is in a great need of one/one more moderator.
there are posts to be moved and posts to be trashed. i also suggest that besides diamond, diamond rom development and diamond accessories to add a diamond trash where to be able to move all the "does the diamond have a led?" threads.
taking this job and responsibility it will be my way of saying "thank you" to this forum.

shameless self promotion?

I want to be a mod, but i dont have a diamond but im online most of the time or at least an hour a day here in xda-dev. Im just saying if anyone is considering.

Moderators are only part of the solution.
Every registered user has the ability to report posts/threads to the enitre moderation team. Use the little triangle with the ! in it.
This is alo a good way to make us aware of forums where there is a true need for additional Mods.

Also, mrvanx, who in my mind is the most active mod in the Diamond forums, does an astounding job clearing the trash.

did anyone replace meschle???
on artemis forum...maybe some others too...
question: does a mod need to know about the topics or just remove the trash
i want be a mod,im 5-6 hours around here, especially when i'm on work,i know what to do,and i'm not a mod on any other site,so i'll have plenty of time for this one...but then again who the hell is going to give it to me

I am sure if you really stay around and help out by showing mods all the junk needing to be removed they may pay you some attention mate ...

i do my duty as a member...report spams, advertising, fighting, care what i type, don't ask stupid or asked questions, help others solve their problems,so don't worry...and i'd feel weird if i get it...i mean you are here longer,so more active,i think....but look it the other way...if you are here longer, and have over 3500 posts...what's wrong with you...why aren't you noticed...do you report
just asking,not insulting
and as i could see the idea wasn't promoted by a mod...so does anyone ask them about it

Well maybe I am too conflicting and not a conformist. Who knows . All I do is help all , run a ftp , write reviews on all roms i test trying to cover them all and hopefully will aquire some other phones to test more roms in other areas on ....

well when we are speaking about mods...one question...there are forums that don't count posts in off topic threads...should you do it here
i mean lots of guys got their posts by complaining about wifes, husbands, what music they listen to,writing jokes....this isn't fair...first time i went to off topic and posted was yesterday...other 100 posts were kinda help to others...artemis,atom,hermes and magician forums...because i have the devices, and i test everything and give review and help
well the number of posts isn't too important, but is something that is watched when e.g. giving apps and roms to beta testers...they give it to guys with most posts...which they gained in off topic...so there is no real knowledge and developer creativity in them
one more thing...would it be good to make these "thanks" buttons like those guys on pdaviet have...so we don't get lost in thanking, but get to the piont....would it require changing vBulletin

lol...i prob wouldnt come close to qualifying...

I noticed an item is being sold that is not the property of the seller. How I know is I am a member of XDA forum which is where the software was designed. it is Item number: 250269408312. Many memebrs and admin from the site have contacted and sent letters to ebay in the past refring to items such as theese being sold here.

Agreed. I have donated to the tom_codon PhamQuang cause - but because I wanted to. There are other great ROM chefs that I have donated to, but the number of different begging posts for the PDAVIET ROMS is putting me off seriously.
It's like there are insiders from PDAVIET in our forums begging as if they are nothing to do with the whole thing.
Some will never give, some will always give - but never all will give. So Give us something all spiderx - a rest about donations - even if I personally think it a great idea to encourage those who make our PDAs better.

Just RELAX pal.
I was not aware of a Forum rule which sanctions the hideous "crime" of cross posting.... and BTW I see that Tom Codon is providing much support on this thread and receiving NOTHING on other fronts this is DEFINITELY WRONG.
Maybe instead of patronizing me you should use your creative mind to find a way to stimulate good causes and not shooting blank criticisms across the board... and don't forget to every now and then.... it helps -among other things- also to digest better

It is astonishing (to say the least) to see how many can brag about having sent donations and notice on the other hand so little cashflow
And CONGRATULATIONS for your vivid imagination… I am indeed from Vietnam and I even know how to spell “GET REAL DUDE”
And if you really think that it is "a great idea to encourage those who make our PDAs better" you should be on my side promoting donations and leaving philosophy aside…. BTW quite a deep citation on your signature… did you copy it from a Chinese fortune cookie?

SiperX you're out of order - if you read the forum rules cross posting is not allowed. I will delete some of your posts. And to take the tone that you now have in replies only adds to your demise. Any further cross-posting of this nature will give you a temporary ban. This forum is NOT about money - if people want to donate they can - take it or leave it.

Getting back to the original thread.... BatteryStatus can be downloaded HERE
There should be the 2 versions listed on his site, basic and advanced but I can only seem to find the link to the basic download. If you have any more luck then just let me know as I'd like to give the advanced a try altho I'm more than happy with the basic edition.
The extended version of batterystatus is hosted on xda-developers:

TouchXperience - Anyone willing to participate in new website life?

Hi!
I am currently working on a new version of TouchXperience website where I will try to keep you frequently updated about project progress and releases. The new website is community-oriented so if you have any questions, suggestions, or if you would like to contribute in my projects, you are free to take part in forum or wiki. Support will be maintained on TouchXperience forum in the future.
As you know I don't have a lot of free time (and a free PC at the moment) to care of TouchXperience project and website, and I have limited knowledge in website content/forum/wiki management, so I would be glad if some of you were willing to help me. But I'm looking for serious/professional people, to moderate forums, to help users and post frequently asked questions,... everything you want to contribute in TouchXperience website life! The best would be if you have good knowledge in CMS, webdesign, forum/wiki management that could help me to improve website.
Thank you in advance!

Add a feature for senior members to mod their own threads?

I have no idea if this is even possible in vBulletin. I tried to google but didn't come up with anything so it might not be... but I figured I would make my case anyways.
It would be awesome if a senior member was capable of moderating their own thread. I know that as a rom developer for the cdma hero and a kitchen programmer, a thread can VERY quickly get out of control. It makes it impossible for someone that hasn't checked the thread in a few days (or hours) to find anything.
I think rather than asking a mod to take time out of their day to try and clean up posts isn't nice to them either.
So I'll ask... is it possible to add a feature for a senior member to be able to moderate a thread that they are the OP on. If it is but xda doesn't want to do that, what are the negative side effects that I'm not seeing? I figure if you are able to limit it to senior member and to their own threads then any shenanigans from this new power would mostly be avoided.
Thanks all!
This has been mentioned before. AFAIK, we have not yet found such a plugin.
Thanks,
Dave
The only negative side is that, "Senior Member" is just a title, I think you get it after like 100 posts? If this was to be implemented it should be like 500 posts to become Senior Member.
It does seem like a good idea, I think though, that some people would delete their posts that offend and then they can claim that they never said anything. This would have to be very carefully thought out and planned if this is possible to implement, because I know some people would use it for bad purposes.

What the OP is asking for is the equivalent of being able to throw someone in jail while that someone is in your house doing something that you believe shouldn't be done in the first place.
I think Uncle Ben said it better... "with great power, comes great responsibility"... and I don't believe that half the Senior members in this site are ready for that .

Yeah, thats why I said its not a good idea.
You can already help the moderators by reporting anybad conduct, it makes it easier since all they have to do is look at the post and edit it or delete it or ban.

8000+ still a noob
So it seems that everyone agrees, just with the caveat that the "senior member" should be a higher number of posts. Or possibly even a second level at 500 or 1000 posts, and THAT'S the level you have to hit in order to be able to moderate your own posts.
I actually tried to go post on vBulletin's support forum but it appears that you need to buy support in order to even be able to create a new post there? Kind of crazy. Ha. I'll keep looking to see if I can find a plugin, because without it this doesn't even exist as an option.
Thanks for the feedback all.
Edit: I don't know enough about vB's settings but according to ChopSuey (a vB coder) this should already be possible: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showpost.php?p=1919340&postcount=11. What he says makes it sounds like that would allow someone to modify any thread, and not their own. But you would think a coder of the app would know. Ha. Maybe it requires version 4.x? I know xda has been talking about upgrading for a while.
We're looking for a way in vB to allow certain people (of a given usergroup) to moderate their own threads. If anyone finds a way, please let me know!
it wouldn't do to simply count posts
there's users having an amazing amount of redundancy, repetition and even irrelevance (chat like) accumulating their post counts that wouldn't be considered with this method alone
the title (if differentiated more fine grained than junior, member, senior) would only be meaningful if it was combined with e.g. a user rating (reputation), derived from other users

[Q] Where are the moderators?

It seems like the forums have gone to complete hell lately with flames junk topics like "lol, socks" and "omfg 2.2 root!!???".
Is xda-devs short of moderators to lock and delete crap topics and flames? I thought the forum rules spoke against this.

It would be more accurate to calculate the # of forums/moderator ratio.
I'm interested in any alternative suggestions you might have. If you care to look at the threads, it's only a relatively small handful of trolls and junk topic creators.

My point is threads like this do nothing to help the situation.
We had a day long "town hall" meeting several months ago where the mods and users came together to discuss ways of improving things.
If you think a thread is junk or is in the wrong forum USE THE REPORT BUTTON
The mods don't have time to read every single thread and determine if it is legit or a waste of space. They asked us members for our help and said the best thing we can do to help is use the report button as it is intended.
Not to mention that with all the bullcrap threads that get started every day you are going to complain about the mods???
If you are going to complain about anyone it should be about the jerks that come in here with tunnel vision on the "New Thread" button and start new threads without reading ANYTHING
Is it an inconvenience? Does it clutter the forum in a HUGE way?
Yes and Yes, but complaining about the moderation is the wrong perspective.

I'm not sure that I did. Is there a way to see a version history?
im right here, everyday and night. i would suggest reporting posts that are in violation of forum rules. i do my best to read as many threads i can and at least drop in and check out the conversations taking place. that said i cant read every post in every forum. the solution to this isnt to start a thread in the spirit of complaining about things not going the way u want them to. the solution would be to take action and report the posts that are out of line. this is a community and every member of the community can report people. at the second a post is reported most likely a moderator will handle the situation.
so please instead of complaining. do something to help out. contribute something to the community. dont add to the problem by flaming back or starting threads to complain about it.
that said... this thread is closed and ill leave my answer for everyone to see. i alone cant see everything. but we all together can bring those who are here for the wrong reason to light, so they can be dealt with.
PS this was posted in the wrong section. Questions need to be posted in Q&A. hence the title of the subforum(Q&A)

Like this forum but don't

Man I like this forum but don't at the same time.. I love the fact there's so much stuff on here that's so helpful to everyone but at the same time the people on here are 50/50 meaning about 50% you are nice and do realize a beginner has to start somewhere and learn as they go and are willing to help as much as possible you also realize you were once there yourselfs mean while there's the other 50% forget they where beginners and noobs at one point and still think that everyone shouldn't ask questions and automatically think you know the answer as well as give rude and smart butt answers or links... uncalled for is about the best way to describe those answers its amazing that the admin allow these people to give rude and uncalled for comments but when someone responds with a rude or smart butt comment that person either gets a warning or banned and the other person gets nothing kind of interesting to me .... everyone should be treated fairly and evenly .. but had to say something from a lot of posts I've been reading

I'm probably one of those guys that sometimes gives snarky responses. I really am trying to be nice and help the person find what they are looking for. That's 90% of the reason I post on here: I remember what it's like to not know much and to come to this community with very little knowledge.
That being said, I also hope people would follow the rules when posting, one of which is to search before starting a thread. I completely understand the complaints of people saying that there's too many threads on this site and it's difficult to find what you're looking for with search, but making a thread that's identical to an existing one is compounding the problem.
The way I try to help out with the problem is to take the time to write out a full response (not just give a link) and to (hopefully gently) point out that this topic has been covered and to look at the correct thread. I know Cnexus and I have been pretty good about this, although sometimes the deluge of MB1 update threads do make me a little short-tempered, and for that, I apologize.

You fine man I understand the rules and read them so I know personally to search before asking and when posting make sure its in the right section.... as far as posting links example I was referring to about smart butt links is the google one I've notice is when you click on link takes you to google it automatically writes in the question the person would ask then at bottom it would say " now was that so hard " kinda funny but smart butt to I'm its a simple question that person could of easily just said hey man look please go read the forum rules and make sure you post in the right section simple and nicely said you know
But yes it is annoying when people ask / post same stuff that's been posted already 400 times before them again people should just be nice " hey man that question / concern / opinion has been posted already please search google and forums thank you "

I know that the user is traditionally at fault (the old IT adage of PBMAC - the Problem Between Monitor and Chair), but I also think it's partially the fault of the xda app on the phone. The search function on there is so woefully inept that I have only used it once or twice (and have never found what I was looking for). On the other hand, when creating a thread on the PC, the website even gives you a list of similar threads that might help you out. There are many times where I've been creating a thread and when I put in the title, a half dozen similar threads popped up with the exact answer I was looking for. I know coding this into the android app would be difficult (if not impossible), but it must be noted that almost all of the MB1 update threads had the "sent from the XDA app..." tag at the bottom. I still tell them to search before posting, but I honestly can't blame them because of the apps search function's shortcomings.
Hi
To respond to the first part about allowing abuse...we don't. But bear in mind we have 5 milllion users, 50000 new posts a day and moderators that are constantly moving questions from the wrong section, breaking up childish nerd fights, responding to reported posts, investigating kang issues, and trying to have a job, family and life. We are not reading every post that enters XDA. We respond to reports by users. And every mod action requires several minutes of "paperwork" to document what was done.
Now to the post about searching, yup app search stinks, however if you switch to browser view there are more search options available as well as googling and adding XDA in the search parameter. The phone is quite large so searching through browser view or just with google is a lot easier than in days past.
In most cases like with football, the person throwing the last punch draws the penalty. It takes 2 to argue but just one is needed to keep it going.
Thanks

I don't care about noob questions. what make me mad is when there is 5 "what is the best rom" threads on the first page. Stuff that you could easily flip through a couple pages and find an answer to is what angers me.

The only thing I find aggravating here or ANY forum is the word "respect". Much respect......have respect......yo bro respect to this guy or that guy! What freakin ever! We aren't 1% bikers here. So why are we throwing that word in every sentence. We are all men amongst men(or women). Respect is a given. Let's quit with the manzy panzy complaints and start tweaking our phones to the fullest.
Just my two cents.......do I need a paypal for that? LMAO!]

You say that, but you'd be surprised at some of the things I see posted here every day
And its difficult NOT to take offense when you find your mental capacity, ability to do something, or your integrity insulted. And the majority of the time, people will attack one of above

The only payment they get is that lovely thanks button at the bottom of every post.
Oh forgot about the most important perk of being a mod

What's frustrating is all of these rule quoters that do nothing but add to the spam. Just answer the question then point them in the right direction or just ignore the post...
There is a saying you can led a horse to water but you can't force them to drink. But if can shoot the f*cker if he is too stubborn
I know sometimes when I was new to this forum (i am not a developer), I would get irritated when posting a question and you would see a lot of "views" but no replies/posts with any help. But you have to realize (as I did), as smart as these guys are, sometimes, nobody knows the answer to your question! So posting "crickets crickets" or something else snarky to that effect won't help you get an answer either. Most people are nice enough to help and will either post a link that you may have overlooked, or a real answer (or at least acknowledge your existence)...so in that case just be patient for an answer. Alot of the times when you google search, maybe you did not type in just the right terms and didn't get the link you were looking for.

Ok I'm going to be the other "other" 50% whose pet peeves is when people author forum posts with little to no punctuation, commas, apostrophes, structure, periods, capitalization, etc.

So it bothers you that they held your hand instead of spoon feeding you the answer? Talk about first world problems... If they were really being anal about the rules then that link would take you to www.google.com and you'd be on your own for the search terms - be grateful that they held your hand as much as they did

If we just answer the question, we encourage further infractions... It would be kind of like banks taking a policy of giving money to anyone who threatens to rob the bank - we would have more robbers, not less...
Ignoring them almost inevitably leads to more noise from them, not less, so that won't fix their broken understanding of the rules...
But if we add to that spam now, there is a chance that someday, maybe it will end... It isn't likely, but I would rather have the rules on my side
I don't enable people to hide behind excuses - every search on the Internet isn't broken, they just require a little effort (almost as much effort as creating a new post, lol)

How about just showing people how well searching works and provide them proof of it's efficiency by linking them to your search results. This both; enlightens the user of search functionality, while also assisting them with their question.
