A noobs question - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Hello folks,
i am kinda new here, but i already spend three hours of searching on Wiki section of Hermes and this forum onto how to upgrade my Windows Mobile 5 to version 6.1.
I decided to choose a custom made ROM of Windows 6.1. Before i did the HardSPL upgrade, and now there is something i need to ask you guys.
Do i have to be afraid of screwing the device doing a straight upgrade to 6.1 from 5 ? I could find any clues on this.
Please give advice, thank you so much.

My advise is to go the 6.0 first purely for upgrading your radio to the latest release then flash with any 6.1 you want.

that emerges one more question- i am using the vodafone branded Hermes from UK in Slovakia /middle europe, so i should proceed to flash Win Mobile 6.0 first with which provided version of Win for best results ?
thatx again

Looks like it's got a 1.47.00.10 radio, so any of those will do ... actually best to follow this from day 1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1990320&postcount=6
Edit my 4shared as the att stripped ROM without radio as flashing too many radios can lead to a brick, so yeah

i just checked my radio version, its 1.32.00.00. sry for one more question, but i am totally new and this device costed me so much
which version can i use now ? please tell me the exact name
other details:
windodws mobile 5.1.461 (build 15671.3.3.0)
rom version 2.04.161.2
rom date 01/19/07
radio version 1.32.00.00
protocol version 32.65.7020.09W

HARD SPL YOUR PHONE 1ST!!!!!!!!!
Just about EVERY cooked rom has this as the header.
At least if something goes wrong you have a chance to recover your "expensive" toy.
If you don't have it and something goes wrong, like for example you don't have a superCID device and flash a different carrier rom, you may be able to fix it instead of getting an expensive paperweight..... READ the tutorials, thats what they're for, so we don't have people calling for help. So many people would still have a functional phone if they took the time to do a bit of research.

Good morning icefirsr,
I'm pretty new at this as well, and have flashed my phone over a dozen times in the last week. Believe me, three hours is not enough research time yet. There are many things to learn, and some of these folks are extremely knowlegable about this stuff.
Those of you with a lot of experience, please correct any of the following you don't agree with.
This is what I have done, after reading a lot of different threads:
1) Do a HARD SPL first.
2) Unlock the phone, both cid and sim
3) Read about radios - I've settled on 1.47.30.10 - it seems to be doing well with both battery life and signal reception.
4) LEARN about the different types - NonRBSN, RBSN, lite, normal, full, compressed, non-compressed. Each has stengths and weaknesses concerning speed, storage utilization, stability, features - it goes on and on.
I've flash different flavors, and am on DVH_V27_NoBS. It's a 6.1 ROM, and so far, it is great. I believe it was released on 10/30/2008.
**(Please excuse my sig for not stating my configuration, been flashing too much, but may have settled on this one for a bit.)
I've been impressed with many - I like the PDACorner roms, version 11 was my first ever flash. I'm waiting on V27 to be re-released, the first iteration I had a few problems with, but liked the speed it offered, and especially like the CRC Device Update and Connection Wizard that was included. Speaking of CRC, I really like V13, and was using it before the current DVH rom I'm using - am anxious for V14, which may even be out now.
That said, this is addicting, even bought another 8525 on eBay for play/flashing purposes...
Could any of the more experienced folks please add to this? I don't want to lead anyone down the wrong path.
Thanks a bunch everyone.

please dont use caps, especially, when you are not right here, my first post already said that i did HARD SPL first
Johnzai thank you for a such long response, i am looking forward to flashing it, but i am still a bit afraid of flashing it from 5.0 to 6.0, because i dont know , which of the official 6.0 ROMS with radio update should i use to finally get to 6.1, i just cant find it anywhere

I would advise trying to download the official release from your cell provider first. I'm not sure if it's necessary to go from 5 to 6 to 6.1 - but verify this first. I would think you could go straight to 6.1 - perhaps upgrade your radio first to version 1.47.30.10 - I've used that version on both 6 and 6.1.
With the radio upgraded, then you could flash any 6.1 - as long as you've unlocked the phone, have you done that yet?
I would advise waiting for a post to verify this, or read a bit more about jumping from 5 to 6.1..... If I knew for sure, I would tell you instead of sending you to "threadland".

ok so far i have done this:
1.getting HARD SPL
2.doing SIM and CID unlock
3.updating RADIO to the one you mentioned , working fine, did some phone calls
4.i am gonna do a 6.1 win update straight ahead, its a cooked one, hope it works, anyone gives me a reason to not do this ?
ty

Sounds like so far, so good. I would advise reading the following post about types of ROMS:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=412895&page=113
Then, look at using this DVH Rom:
http://kc9.info/pdaviet/rom/Dvha79_... 20924.1.5.0 PV DVH) Black(Full) NoBS V27.exe
When you click on this link, it will be for a download, the id and password are PDAVIET and PDAVIET.
Let us know how it works for you.

WM6 ROM
Just upgrade to any of the ROMs I gave you earlier, with the radio you desire I upgraded to the latest 1.56 radio but I flashed with the ATT ROm first and I have a jasjam so .... they are inter compatible

WM2005 on a Blue Angel

I have a Blue Angel as mentioned in my signature and I have what I believe are all of the files needed to try and install WM2005 Build 14326.0.0.0 onto it.
Here are the WM2005 files I currently have:
HimaUpgradeUt - 512KB - 5/5/2004 4:54PM
nk.nbf - 32,769KB - 3/21/2005 9:08AM
And the following came from my existing ROM:
ms_.nbf - 16,833KB - 2/3/2005 7:45PM
radio_.nbf - 4,097KB - 2/3/2005 7:45PM
I also have a good copy of ActiveSync Beta 4.0.0 and have all of the instructions that were made in the main WM2005 post for installing on the Himalaya and I'm assuming it should be the same for the Blue Angel.
My device info currently reads:
Model No: PH20A2
Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition Version 4.21.1088 Build 14132
ROM Version: 1.36.00 WWE
ROM Date: 01/13/05
Radio Version: HA00_140
Protocol Version: AA3.3.301
ExtROM Version: 1.36.110 WWE
Hardware Version: 0041
This is what it came with out of the box, I have not installed the updated ROM Audiovox released the day the phone was released because I have never had a single problem and some people who upgraded reported problems and that some files were a day older than the version that shipped in the original ROM.
-------------------
Now my 1st question, the newest updated ROM installer package from Audiovox which was released 3/4/2005, has a different version of the upgrade utility, it's called "HaUpgradeUt - 424KB - 12/23/2004". The package it was included in from Audiovox's website was called "HA_SPCS_13600_113_00140_6600". Which upgrade utility is the best to use or does it not matter?
Now my 2nd question, has anyone yet tried this on a Blue Angel? Is there anyone here who really knows thier stuff who is willing to help me if I get lost or screwed up so I can be the Blue Angel WM2005 test pig?
Thanks!
hi
i have a pda2k with 1.33 rom and radio rom 1.08 and my cooked rom
i tried the upgrade but got the device authentication error.. tried it with the explained patch and the other method in original wm2005 post.. the himupgrade starts the procedure and then stops after some time saying an error occured..
but you go ahead and try it..may be you will do something differently and will succeed..
note: i have tried the xda 2 SE rom and imate jam rom and almost tried the alpine rom on my pda2k.. there is nothing you cannot revert back from
just incase if you are curious what happened after the above roms..my device didnt boot.... no problem...just unplug the usb port of the cradle and run a wwe rom made for xda 2s or pda2k ...everything will work then!
good luck..
keep us posted!!!!
in the above post: i mean unplug usb then replug usb and then run the BAupgrade utility....
can you upload hte 1.36 rom you have??? does your device have wifi and camera???
thanks

Where is the post for this "explained patch method" you are referring to? Also I'm considering the post titled "Microsoft Windows Mobile Version 5.0 I can share" as the original WM2005 post so we are on the same page in our thinking on that one.
The ROM is a free download from Audiovox, I guess I could upload it though.
I'm assuming the BAupgrade utility is on this site for download?
My device does have the camera but no WiFi, it has EV-DO instead. It's a CDMA phone, not a GSM phone...
your running the Verizon EVDO version of the the BlueAngel a CDMS 1xrt yada yada device. Most new ROM images are made for GSM phones then latter altered to talk to CDMA modules. In this case I think ot only would you not have a "good" experience but would warn against it. Second BlueAngel devices have OEM driver for the slide out keyboard. You will most likely loose for sure its use with this new OS. This is why the only devices it is worrking on right now are non-hardwired keyboard devices. Also there seems to be a notable diff in the hardare implimentation between HTC based devices. What software might work with one may not at all or damage another. Sorry for the down news but I think unless you have a keyboardless device I would not recomend playing with it. Just my 2 cents.
What you can do though is grab some of the elements (image files) from the new OS in other threads here, and overwrite the files on your device. Kind of like adding crome package or racing stripes. still the same car, just feel new
Thanks for the input. I'm running the Sprint version, not the Verizon one, same difference though pretty much, lol. 2.5G Vs. 1xrt and both have EV-DO, and then of course the frequency of the Verizon digital and Sprints PCS, but yeah both CDMA
I really couldn't care less about the keyboard, I don't even use it, never really have. Honestly, I work for CompUSA and if this thing gets buggered up I'll just exchange it out. I'm going to do a full backup tonight, hard reset, dump the existing ROM and then start the process just for grins to see how it goes. As long as it's not dog slow, text messaging works and email along with voice functions I'll be happy as heck. It'll atleast be fun to screw with and then I can always go back later.
I'm still unclear on some things like the country code and stuff that was mentioned in the other posts. Once I know I have all the facts and all of the files I'll give it a try and post back here. I'm off Sunday, Monday, & Tuesday so I'll have 3 days straight to play. I have to say my only real concern is it working with the CDMA radio which hopefully it will since I have a good copy of the latest Radio ROM for it...
hi 92GTA
yeah were on the same page..
wm2005 i can share is the original post..and i think page 10 has the answer (im not entirely sure though the post has now 17 pages!!!)
@ 92GTA : can you share this 2k5 ROM ? can you upload to a ftp and give us a link
bad :
read properly : he WANTS to install WM2005 on his IIs.
Why should you people go around risking your devices like this?
It's like putting diesel in a petrol car..things will screw up...
The 2005 upgrade currently available is only meant for XDA II devices, not IIs or II mini...or whatever. Hardware differences will render your efforts rather futile save for a massive hack.. Sigh.

Best ROMS for PDA2K and for a beginner

Hi
I am going to start using my PDA2K again as a temporary replacement for the Vodafone V1620 I am giving up on.
My PDA2K has the 1.4 rom with 1.12 Radio.
BEFORE I go to all the trouble of reloading all my programs, data etc.
Should I be doing any upgrades?
And is there a real 'stupid persons' guide to doing the upgrade?
Cheers.

Well we have a page on how to upgrade to the lateest 1.42 rom which if followed is prity close to an idiots guide (bar the fact we have not mentioned that you need to turn on your pc to do it).
This will get you a rom that smeels of even stinks of t-mobile.
Maybe you can live with that (I have in the past).
If you can't then you need to learn about cooking your EXT rom.
UPgrading is not a past time that should be taken up by "Idiots" (your wording) as this can lead to a paper Wheigt that looks like a BlueAngel.
When I came to this site I had a German MDAIII running on a Swiss network. All I wanted was a god damm English rom which T-Mobile would not give me, I-mate how ever would.
This site has alllowed me to understand how to upgrade, given me the files to do this and answerd a lot of my question (only after I learnt how to ask them).
Given your situation with 1.40 and 1,12 radio I can only sugest that upgrade the radio (link in wiki ) to 1.13.
So far I have not seen any issue that have been fixed with 1.42 as in confirmed that they have been fixed. However If I was to falsh me device again I would use the 1.42.
Have fun.
hi MDAIIIuser,
I am on 1.40 rom now and still debating if its worthwhile upgrading to the 1.13 radio. What are your thoughts on this?
1.12 seems to work ok for me so far.
I thought for a simple solution I would upgrade just the radio and maybe the bluetooth.
When I followed the link on Wiki for radio 1.13 I got a .rar file.
What is one of these?
My PC does not have a clue what to do with it.
I have to explain that I am not PC computer literate being a long term Mac user that 'just works' some of this Windows stuff makes me want to swear. )

Thank you to everybody that gives there views and advice freely!
P.S i got Pocket plus to install after i did another hard reset, phewwww
Don't want to sound stupid but ...
.. is upgrading your ROM an easy thing to do for a non teckie ?
Do you need to hard reset etc etc. ?
Is there a guide out there ?
Don't wanna take the plunge and mess things up. I've got loads of software and tweaks on my SPVM5000 - will Sprite Back up re-install with a new ROM. I'm also on 1.13.49 same as jab1a.
Hello All,
If i replace my xda exec rom to orange rom, it will be locked?
Another question, where can i get the radio rom 1.09 to flash the orange rom?
Thank you,
racerx
Hi Rick GM,
the ROM upgrade is pritty easy and the Radio update is aswell, everything you need to know or might not need to know about the update is in the WiKi and forum. its real easy.
As for backups, im not sure how this works but for good measure before i did the upgrade i did a FULL backup, then i did a non-rom backup (i.e i just backed-up the things i had installed on the m5000) then i did a PIM and message backup (note: i only ever have problems with a restore when i decide to restore the messages databases so unless you realy need to i would only backup the PIM(contacts) database). I think if you tryed to do a full backup and then do the upgrade and then restore the full backup you might run into a few errors or incompatability. it only takes about 30mins to do the update and about another 20mins to re-install all your software and then the rest of your life to get all the setting you want just right! lol
I am sure you will do fine, after all this is the best site in the world for PPC so im sure someone here would be able to help you if it all goes pear shaped
Moved thread from news section
Thanks for that jab 1a
I haven't taken the plunge yet but it's coming !
I think your 20 minutes to re-instal software is a bit optimistic even if all goes well. I reckon it will take me an hour plus to sort out all the cr*p that I've got on my device. (I keep a copy of everything but some's on my home PC and some at work).
I'll update you when I finally pluck up courage / find the time.
BTW - I'm only going to do it because you can. Isn't that what these devices are all about ?

Well I upgraded with the ROM from the Orange site (1.30.90) - no problem. That's good news.
Sprite Backup V5.1 is newly released this week and boasts cross ROM/Device backup capability after capturing your old ROM in .sbu file immediately after hard reset and prior to ROM upgrade.
It hasn't worked - it won't recognise my .sbu file (Invalid Upgrade File) or words to that effect so it looks like a slog to put everything back on (unless Sprite can restore (no pun intended) my faith in them and come up with an answer. Might have a go at the Radio Rom next.
I have the new ROM from Qtek into my Universal. Is it worth the upgrade to this new Orange ROM?
best regards,

Sprite really screwed up here.
When they released 5.1, they re-introduced their killer rom upgrade proof restore feature. It even works for the new self-extracting restores. How cool is that?
Now, today, I had to have my SPV M5000 replaced (same model) because of a screen problem, and knew the replacement would be AKU2, so I purchased Sprite 5.1 to back up with. I looked around all the different pages I could find showing how to use Device Upgrade Mode. All had links to the same GetUpgradeData.exe. So, even though I had that nagging developers' intuition that this must be wrong, I assumed it was the right version. I only had twelve hours to puchase, get the file down, and do all the backup stuff.
Then I exchanged devices with the courier. (Orange care is great (mostly!)). However, when I tried to restore, what a surprise: "Invalid Upgrade File". Checked back on Sprite Site - ONE page out of the five or six links to GetUpgradeData2005.exe. Howl !!!! :x
Can someone please post an UpgradeData.sbu, from a clean vanilla Pre-AKU2 M5000, dumped with the new GetUpgradeData2005.exe, otherwise someone at Sprite is just gonna have to die. Lots.
Many, Many thank yous in advance!
Update: Sprite have kindly offerred to provide an sbu for 1.13.53 WWE.
Unfortunately, as best as I can remember, mine Rom was 1.13.49 WWE.
Can anyone please tell me of an identifying characterstic by which I dould have distinguished the two versions (bearing in mind - I don't have the device any more), or even better an upgrade file (sbu) for 1.13.49 WWE?
Mutant
I too used the GetUpgradeData.exe as advised by Sprite. After registering my problem they advised me to use the GetUpgradeData2005.exe and sent me a copy. Unfortunately I'd already upgraded the ROM so didn't have the .sbu pre upgrade. I've since got a clean 1.13.49 from a colleagues Orange SPV M5000 but the backup still didn't work. Sprite recognised the .sbu but just messed up the device (after partially restoring) requiring several hard resets. If you want the .sbu, I think I've got it stored somewhere. Let me know.

Newbie anxiety!

Hi all
I've taken a good long read throughout this Upgrade to WM6 subforum, I like the idea of it a lot and want to go ahead and do it, but having never re-flashed a PDA Phone before (I've done my PSP lots of times tho but thats easy in relation) I think its very difficult to find anywhere to even begin from!
Can anybody just give me a total-overall-topdown-summary-breakdown of the steps I need to perform on a fresh T-Mobile MDA Vario II. Doesn't have to be in detail, just all the basic steps required.
The forums, whilst being great for regulars seems to just confuse me the more I read them because of all the new issues raised and the individual cases on different vendor models of the Hermes.
My phone isnt a new Vario II, but I've done nothing to it except install apps, and it is showing REALLY old bootloader (I think 1.04) and radio versions (cant remember) in the system information. I'm presuming it'll require a radio upgrade at the least.
I would really appreciate a summary of everything and I think all newbies would benefit a lot.
Specific areas of confusion and concern -
-I would like to be able to grab the existing memory contents as an image off the phone just in case I choose to return to WM5 in future, and have a way of easily restoring it with no fuss. Exactly like ghosting a PC will return the whole OS, and all files and apps. Any recommendations how?
-I cant choose which custom third party WM6 ROM to use or just use HTCs official one if I should.
-I dont know if I'll still be able to use TomTom Navigator and some games plus I'm running TCPMP with the YouTube FlashVideoBundle. Will this still work?
-Should I upgrade the radio and bootloader before thinking about moving to WM6? Is there any other areas I should be flashing/rejigging before upgrading? Eg whats this about the ExtRom and gaining more space (obviously good)?
-The vendor lock on the firmware concerns me. Is there one on the UK T-Mobile MDA Vario II? Also about what I read somewhere about how disabling the lock with one of your tools might brick the phone (or am I getting confused somewhere along the line).
-As the community moves on with further developments, the divide between n00bism (me) and l33t (you) increases - case in point - kitchens??? I'm not saying though that it shouldn't happen!
Many thanks for everybodys work.

Specific areas of confusion and concern -
(1) I would like to be able to grab the existing memory contents as an image off the phone just in case I choose to return to WM5 in future, and have a way of easily restoring it with no fuss. Exactly like ghosting a PC will return the whole OS, and all files and apps. Any recommendations how?

(1) No idea, but why would you want to return to WM5. Once you have WM6, you'll never go back. I'm sure there is probably a WM5 somewhere.
(2) I use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334946
(3) Hit and miss. But probably.
(4) Upgrade the boot loader. Radio is optional, but I recommend it to.

go to programs\advanced config (or system tools, cant remember)
Find advancedconfiguration options, go to keyboard, then select Cingular out of the list
I had to do the same thing on schaps with my 8525

are you talking about system tools\ htc custom?
it's already on Cingular
Also, anyone know how to get rid/change the second startup screen (Blue and Green with Windows Mobile)
Whoa, subject hijack...
...oh well, not to worry.
Anyway, in response to gwtx2, I might want to go back because some little thing I need might not work, and I might require some T-Mobile support, I'm sure they'll not touch a phone thats been reflashed with unofficial fw.
Also T-Mobile might release an official WM6 Hermes upgrade too.
Besides, have you never heard of this 'take backups = a good thing' thing?
Besides, it must be relatively easy, how else would all these custom hermes firmwares be built from?
How do these guys do it?
Thx
Stu
sorry .. didn't mean to hijack

Many thanks for pointing me towards MrVanx's Hermes Guide site.
Are you sure its fine to be using the VP3G firmware for my phone given it was derived from and is in general use with a US model AT&T 8525 (A hermes 100)?
My phone is a UK model T-Mobile MDA Vario II (A hermes 300)? Thats three differences I see (Country, operator firmware, hardware revision)!
Although MrVanx guide says the Vario II is suitable on the first page, I'm thinking its worth going for a different ROM derived from the Vario II for luck.
If I choose to go with another that was derived from the HTC official one, I'm presuming the general instructions are the same then?
eg.
#1 take down settings and xfer files.
#2 reflash HardSPL bootloader
#3 reflash radio version
#4 reflash ROM.
#5 restore settings & apps.
Am I right?
Many thanks again.
Done some stuff!
Hi all again.
Right, I've been perhaps too brave for my own good, but it turned out well!
I've installed HardSPL 2.10.Olipro on my phone, plus I've gone the whole hog and picked a very up to date radio version 1.54.00.10, I think it was originally ripped from a french firmware, I figured a Euro fw would be best suited for my UK model Hermes.
I was right I think - I now see a good fast T-Mobile home webpage, and sites load pretty good once it finds it. I also tried YouTube on TCPMP player, that seems quicker but I couldn't be totally sure.
One point I should note - When running the RUUWrapper app, AutoDetect flashed up a YES NO question on the PDA screen to accept running the program. Problem is I didn't catch it in time, so instead it threw up an autodetect error. Now after closing RUUWrapper and re-running it, it never throws up the YES NO question any more in any radio flasher (even after rebooting the PDA and the PC)! Instead I had to choose the HardSPL tickbox and the SPL 2.02/2.10 fourth option down, to continue. Slightly concerning but it worked.
Now all I need to do is up to a WM6 firmware when I choose one, it's gone well so far so my luck is bound to change!
QUESTION PLEASE-
Does anybody know the T-Mobile UK 3G Cellular Line access point password? I know the username but would need to fill in the pwd. The username is t-mobile but the pwd is ****** and wont copy paste of course! Its in the bit where you see the access point address - general.t-mobile.uk.
Many thanks to all for helping me this far.

The general answer to the first part is it doesn't really matter which provider gave you your Hermes as long as it is one. (Actually, there are some differences between Hermes models but honestly don't worry about that for now.)
Don't worry about going for a ROM that's derived from T-Mob. Basically, all the different network providers get given the latest working versions of Windows Mobile from time to time for them to either check and have a play with or to customise and release as an upgrade or in the newest issues of their phones (or as a download for current users).
My Hermes is Orange UK (i.e. SPV M3100) but I've ended up at various times having WM6 versions derived rom AT&T, T-MOb, HTC et al. The only thing that matters is that it's Windows Mobile for the Hermes.
As to going back to WM5, I think it's worth having the original ROM about. If you search around the Hermes Wiki (I'd do it but it's late and I honestly can't be bothered, soz!) you'll find a list of original ROMs available for download. Note your current version and go download it so it's there ready for you to pit back on should you ever want to. (Warranty-claim time can be a good time for that.)
I'd suggest the following as a routine, myself:
1. Note down any details you might need later such as ROM version etc. Anything that comes up briefly after soft-reset or in Device Info and About in settings and any network setting for acessing GPRS or 3G etc.
2. Download the OliPro bootloader and install. The reason for this is to protect yourself as much as possible against problems.*
3. Have a gander at all the current cooked ROMs. I'd advise initially going for a lightish version as you can always add to it with cab files for your preferred extra bits.
4. Don't go for the Kitchens yet. It's best to mess with installing ROMs before trying to make one. The people eho run the kitchen threads, and the people who wrote the tools they use, have all worked very hard on making it possible for people who don't know much to make their own version of WM6 easily. It's easy but do it later.
5. Radio is absolutely optional and in most cases not very unnecessary. Like everyone else, I always want the latest of everything just in case there's a tiny, incremental improvement but if you have no problems with reception or internet access then worry about that last, if ever. Not every radio version is 'better' than the previous. The most recent version always has the highest version number obviously, but new versions are often brought out to deal with issues in a particular geographical area (usually country-specific AND network-specific, though it may or may not be better for other users elsewhere). The latest version of radio may be better for you but it might be worse and it might stop your internet of wifi working or something. Leave it for now if you have no issues with any kind of radio-related functions.
6. Installing your apps and settings is obviously something you'll do when the phone itself is done.
*There is another BRILLIANT touch to make sure you're extra super-safe and it's particularly easy: follow this link: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_SDCardFlashing . Basically, if you keep a copy of the a ROM image (renamed to HERIMG.nbh) on your microSD card (check the wiki item for specifics) then you can flash your phone at the touch of a button (well, two butons) from there in an emergency. even if your house loses ekectrical power during the flashing process whilst it's connectedto your PC and your Hermes won't even THINK of booting with half an OS flashed to it, you can very nearly always restore the ROM by flashing from the card.
It's all dead simple one you get into it, it's just a tad worrying before you start to take a scalpel to a new toy you just paid good money for.
You'll be fine mate.
Aha! Your success story must've appeared whilst I was busy typing!
Nice one. Ah well!
WOOOHOOO! I'm on WM6!!!
Many thanks chunkymunky for all your comments, its nice to know some fellow brits are on here too. Which phone do you have?
Its also nice to know that any hermes ROM will work on my phone, and I'm definitely going to have a go at this SD card reflash at some point now I'm gaining confidence in reflashing. Having said that, I have an old HTC Blue Angel (Orange SPV something) and that used to occasionally crash and do a full hard reset, erasing everything. My hermes has never done that so SD reflashing could be moot.
As it goes I'd like to share my experiences - late last night I flashed my Vario II with Fun_Keys 1.5.2 thats based on the 3.62 WM6 ROM. It reflashed fine, and I am utterly over the moon!!!! My phone has been reborn into something far better, faster in lots of areas. T-Mobile UK be damned for not releasing an official WM6 upgrade (yet) because WM6 is noticeably faster, looks really great with the shiny black theme. etc etc etc.
And because of all the work the ROM authors have done, I now get full on HSDPA access on my phone, I get the H icon on the top bar and everything! I know the H Icon being present now doesnt mean that I didn't get HSDPA before on my original WM5 firmware, but I'm pretty sure it is muchos faster.
Besides, a while back, a guy on T-Mobile UK tech support said I'd only get HSDPA when using my phone as a modem for a laptop, not via PocketIE on the phone itself. That made me feel I'd been a bit ripped off.
Oh and TCPMP with FlashVideoBundle works fine too and the phone downs YT Videos really quickly. I don't even have a serious problem with the ATI Imageon stuffs.
I'd like to mention that after a good while using radio versio 1.54.00.10 that it works fantastically on a UK T-Mobile MDA Vario II. HSDPA access included. Not unexpected since it was on 1.05.05.00!!!
Also TomTom works fine with two different bluetooth GPS receivers I have. WM6 has granted me access to the 'External GPS' option in the control panel I was missing originally (bloody operator firmware!) - as a result Google Maps can now use my GPS too!!!
As a techie by profession, I'm also loving all the extra tools Fun_Keys put on, like the advanced configuration tool, the task manager, regedit etc.
Countless other advantages I've gained has basically brought my phone a new lease of life, now I definitely dont plan to upgrade to a newer phone any time soon.
Who would have thought such a simple thing would bring such happiness!
The only disappointment was with having to up to ActiveSync 4.5 which killed my partnerships! No biggie, and nothing to do with WM6.
a big Thank You to the XDA Developers forum in general for your tireless efforts.

every time i tried to update the rom or radio i've got the
260 error...why is that?...i have a htc mda basic t-mobile...and its sim locked to austria....can somebody tell me how to unlock it?
Hi all....
1st.. dont flash any full stock ROM cause it includes SPL and radio those (most important radio) are the first thing to brick a device...
2nd.. many times i flash back to wm6 just to test the performance, is ok but you must to stripp the stock rom and guess what?... is hard... so i suggest if you all want to go back to wm6 use the stripped att stock rom

Upgrading to the Official WM6 ROM, but have questions

When I got my replacement AT&T 8525, it came with the AT&T WM5 ROM. I decided to downgrade to the Cingular WM5 version since I didn't like the AT&T one. I've been skeptical about upgrading to the official WM6 release, and I figured that since I have some time tonight that I would. However, I do have a couple of questions about how this will work since I had to install a different bootloader in order to make the change back to the Cingular WM5 version possible.
Currently my settings are:
ROM version: 1.34.502.1
ROM date: 09/21/06
Radio version: 1.40.30.00
HardSPLv7
My question are, do I need to modify my radio version before I upgrade? Also, should I modify my bootloader before I upgrade to the official WM6? Thanks.
Firstly good job on flashing HardSPL.
your radio doesnt need to be changed at all, but if you want to take a peek at my tests here that might help you choose an appropriate radio version.
For WM6 DEFINATLY go for it, the updated stacks/drivers/kernel are definatly faster than the WM5 versions.
Give the pandora naked 7 ROM a shot........it will FLY.
Your settings can be restored for AT&T using the HTC network wizard (easily found with a search).......and make sure you backup all your contacts etc... using PIMBackup (in the development forum).
I keep getting an error 264 connection error saying that the update utility cannot connect to my phone. I've followed all the steps. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. The only thing that sparks my mind that I don't remember occuring before is that when I plug my phone in via USB ActiveSync automatically begins, so I wasn't sure if I needed to disable that function or not since the instructions mentioned something about being sure that happens before installing the new ROM.
Any help? I'm still stuck here.
I just did mine (I am a brand new to all this) and I followed these steps word for word in this thread, adn man what a difference .
read these all the way through.

and after you upgrade the rom do this, but read it all before doing so
HTC plug in , great look for the 8525

Oh i forgot, the HTC att WM6 included the radio upgrade to the 1.48. which works great.
