Here's the official list of supported audio/video formats.
It has .avi DivX included out of the box, so we can finally expect hardware accelerated playback without conversion!
Xvid, on the other hand, is not listed. Don't really know if it means no xvid (my DVD player doesn't officially support Xvid either, but plays them fine).

That's great news!
According to this WP7 supports h264 at both main profile and high profile which means that we could easily watch 720p videos downloaded from youtube. So it means that even mkv files will just need to be remuxed which takes only few minutes. Great!
For perfect support it needs mkv support with subtitles.
And remember that all this is hardware accelerated!
Yeah, but 99.99% of my video files are xvid avis, don't know if I can watch these.

yeah lets hope that coreplayer or somebody makes a player that supports all media file types
They can't do it in managed code. Period. Even if they could, there' no freakin' way to copy files to a WP7 device.

This is subject to change so they can still add support for xvid, if not you'll have to change fourCC from xvid to divx and you're good to go(unless your xvid's have some exotic features that don't exist in divx).
OK, sounds good, so it could be really usable in terms of video playback (not to mention that so far it's the best out-of-the-box format support in the market). Still no AC3 sound though.

AC3 would be nice but overkill. Who needs 6 channel stream on a mobile device
It would be useful only when connected to HDTV through HDMI cable
Next thing they must add is MKV support with subtitles

Conversion of the audio track itself shouldn't last longer than 10 minutes so I wouldn't call that long. But I agree having AC3 support on the device would be very consumer friendly so maybe in future release.
I would love to have FLAC support too

what kind of program would u recommend to convert these files mine always takes 4ever, but then again my laptop is pretty darn slow, but what do u use?
As of today, Zune software recognizes Xvid files and plays them fine on the software. For the Zune HD player, it converts it into wmv prior to syncing it. But in the following months, the device will get Native Xvid support. So, my guess is WP7S will have Zune HD-like playback abilities, so, Xvid is definitively a go.
MKV thought are not played in the software.

Me. Coupled with form of decent headphone virtualisation system, naturally.
Dolby Headphone would do at a pinch, but something based on Smyth Virtual Surround would be even better.
How do you watch videos on your EVO? Do you convert them and then drop the file on you sdcard? Stream from Dropbox or something else?
I usually convert them to one of the supported file types.
I just throw the video file on my sd card then use RockPlayer. I use to convert all my video files but RockPlayer can play just about all types of video files. There is a lite version on the marketplace. I dont think it can play .mkv files tho. Hope this helps.

I third this. It actually plays .mkv files just fine, or at least I haven't had any trouble with them yet. I recall you have to set it to software decoding rather than hardware, but I'm not sure if this is related to playing .mkv's or if it's for all filetypes.

I tried a 720p .mkv file a few months back and the video played back extremely slow and choppy. I always use software decoding. I will try another .mkv tonight and report back

You're probably right about 720p, I just checked and the videos I was watching are 624x352, which still look smooth and clear on the EVO.

He all... just thought I'd follow up. Tried a 720 .mkv file... just as I suspected. Slow and choppy. I will have to convert that file type to a mp4. so... uh... thanks!
Mkv and mp4 are just containers. As long as the codec used is h264, the video should play just fine. I have many 720p videos on my phone that play just fine. Just make sure to keep the bitrate under 3000kbps or so.

I have VPlayer Advanced and when I play an .avi video that is 624x352 it lags pretty bad...
I can't imagine watching a 720p or a 1080p video on this thing...
Anyone know a video player that is worth having? ???
(It must be able to play all formats like .mkv .mp4 and so on...)

playing .mkv simply is done if supported by device... i tried many but none could play mkv on desire hd flawlessly coz of hardware limitations...

modo player can play a 720p .mkv on my DHD mostly good. Not perfect but close!
The phone by default doesn't support .mkv if this video player doesn't support more formats than the phones default player then I'm not interested.
Greetings, I use and recommend "Best Video Player PRO (Summer Player)" is very good and lso read almost all video formats, only the interface is not very appealing but the rest works perfect.
Mobo player plays 480p mkvs perfectly without lag at all. Haven't tried 720p though

I Use RockPlayer. Plays everything pretty well, assuming you select the correct option for the file (hardware or software decoding).
I think you have to pay for it, but honestly I've had it that long I cant remember doing it.
Hardware wise, the DHD doesnt support much in the way of videos (or its awkward). Obviously, 720p 3gp, MP4, and mine is picky about WMV (it will play and then decide it can't play this file about halfway lol). it apparently supports AVI and XVID but I never come across any AVI encoded with MP4 ASP and MP3, hence RockPlayer.
MoboPlayer seems to struggle a little with MKV files I've noticed ... kind of lags. If the video has subtitles there's epic desyncing as well.
There's DicePlayer I guess, which could very well be the best video player on the market right now, but it doesn't support embedded MKV subtitles as far as I know so I haven't gone about buying it yet. Then again, I'm also a bit hesitant to buy it even with the subtitles working because I expect VLC to release their player in the coming month ...

Ive been watching 720p movies using it and not had any problem. Not a single lag either!! Rockplayer works flawlessly!! Its the best you can find!

Been using it for a while now and it hasnt not played a file yet.
Not big on HD on the DHD so i dont really know about that.
Rockplayer for your videos and Poweramp for the music and your set.
Wish VLC would make a player for android. Worked great on my iPhone, but the iphone sucks.
old VIDEO PLAYER (not advanced) works best for me , better than rockplayer, at least on my phone

if the videos is supported format by system. mono plays well. but the videos have flac or some unsupported format. mono can not play well.

The playback lagged . I don't know why..
I used the Dice Player, because it's supporting DTS, also i'm using a 5m HDMI cable.
But why is the movie lagging? There are kinda microlags..
Resolution: 720p
Video Bitrate: 5586 kbps
Audio Stream: DTS 5.1

Maybe the Player causes the problem, because another 720p movie was played well (Samsung stock player). btw: the phone was very hot after watching the above mentioned (DTS) movie.
Does anyone has some ideas?

Just watched a 1080p movie, and the phone was only a bit warm (with samsung stock player), was AC3. Does anyone know a "good" converter from DTS to AC3?
i had to split the movie into 3 files, to be able to play the movie (4GB limitation).
Maybe Samsung will fix these two issues: DTS capability and EXT4....
Diceplayer prior to 1.2.0 have some video lag issue.
did you test the movie using diceplayer 1.3.0 ?
I was using the 1.3.0 version.

As far as I know hardware-acceleration an Android will only be used when using the integrated media-framework.
While Samsung extended the stock media-framework to support more container and codecs (like AC3 for example) it doesn´t support DTS.
This means, anything you can not play with the Samsung mediaplayer will use pure software-decoding, which is slow and burns a lot of energy.
Maybe the Player causes the problem, because another 720p movie was played well (Samsung stock player). btw: the phone was very hot after watching the above mentioned (DTS) movie.

Yes, i thought the same, because it was so warm.
I used the Rockplayer, with it you can activate Hardware acceleration, but i don't know if it works.
Thought other players could use the hardware acceleration.
From now on, i will convert the DTS to AC3, but first of, i will look for stock AC3

Rockplayer can use hardware-acceleration, but only using the Android-Framework, which means hardware-acceleration will only work for the same containers/codecs as with the stock mediaplayer.

As I said Players can use hardware-acceleration, but they have to do it using the media-framefork, which means no hardware-acceleration for containers/codecs which aren´t supported in the media-framework.
In theory you could develop a mediaplayer with your own media-framework, directly programming the SoC.
But the question is how much of use it would anyway, could the hardware assist decoding for codecs which aren´t already present in the media-framework? It certainly could be useful for unsupported containers, that contain codecs which are already supported.
But the biggest problem would be that your new media-framework will only work with the phone you developed it, nobody will make android-software for just one phone out there.
That´s somewhat of the curse of the Android-plattform. It has been developed for maximum compatibility between the different devices out there. This means lots of choices in devices to buy for us, and for software-developers many devices that can run their software. But it also means we are not getting device-specific-software from 3rd-party developers.
Hopefully the Android-Framework at some time will split up the media-framework into "modules" similar to a DirectShow Filtergraph, so mediaplayers could exchange this individual modules and still use hardware-acceleration in others (which come from the device-manufacturer)
This would allow for example the support of different containers without losing hardware-acceleration in the decoding-part (if the codec is already supported), as well as doing audio-decoding in software (which could be quite reasonably done with 2 Cortex-A9-CPUs) and still using the hardware for the video-part.
I never hadany lag on the stock. Even the 1080 ones

Diceplayer use SoC's HW Decoder. + SW decoder for Audio.

After Diceplayer came out, all of android device that supported by diceplayer
can play MKV(H.264/MPEG-4+DTS/AC3).
Even Nexus-S can play MKV+DTS+H.264 High profile with Diceplayer.

I bet it lags because of the High Video Bitrate! get some 720p movie with Bitrate between 2K - 3.5 K and try

mal-formatted mkv file can cause some lag.
H.264 need 2-type of frame time - PTS/DTS.
but some of MKVs have wrong time stamp.
SGS2's HW Video decoder can not handle these files.

My MKV's plays without issue, smother than Diceplayer!
Yes works much batter then dice. Just tested 720P mkv, plays smooth in hw mode with subs.

Me either.. Its abit choppy - SW decoder fast mode works best for me plays nice and smooth. Also if its been updated for ICS why do the buttons still remain on screen :|

Two things:
1. When I play 720p MKV file locally it plays nicely in HW. But when I play the same file from network share, only software decoder works and subtitle no longer loads.
2. TXT subtitle in the format beow does not display correctly:

Yeah, diceplayer works fine with mkv files, but not so well with xvid avis. It is a bit choppy, and ac3 audio plays ahead of video. I bet there will be an update soon enough.

Probably depends on files, all AVIs I have tried played without any problems. But still, most of my files now comes in MKV format.

I cant decide which to get.. MX Video looks a lot nicer but the DicePlayer market page says it drains less battery and it takes advantage of the Gnex's omap processor for video so.... ehhhh

If MX is said to do everything in software, than why does it show Software OR Hardware decoder option while playing files? Some files get played in Hardware, some in software, all depends on codec. Try both. In my case, subtitles support is important, so most of the time I use MX, but Diceplayer is nice too. Whenever file doesn't play in one, I try the other. Neither is perfect yet.

I have problems with some xvid avi files with MX Player. But even so the decision is easy at the moment because the developer of Dice Player has problems with his checkout account and you can't buy Dice Player at the moment.
Try the free version. AVI's lag for me

Try the free version of MX Player first and see how you like it. MX Player has lag for me in AVI's (standard def) with hardware decoding selected. I have to choose software decode (Fast) for it to play properly.

I have the same problems with xvid avi files, but i can't enable software decode. Regardless of what options i choose in decoder settings, the xvid avi file is always played in HW mode (amazingly an h.264 mkv file is always played on Fast SW mode with the same settings).

Try play this MKV file locally from the phone, not over the network, it should play in Hardware. If it does, then mount your network drives with CIFS Manager and they will play in Hardware too.

Now that mx player hides the soft buttons, how do we access the menu to change the options? I can't seem to find the … button anywhere.

Try play this MKV file locally from the phone, not over the network, it should play in Hardware. If it does, then mount your network drives with CIFS Manager and they will play in Hardware too.

Played it locally, i don't use streaming... the mkv is played smootly in "SW fast" mode, but the xvid avi is not played smoothly in "HW" mode...
