[Theme] 1st G1 theme [Discontinued] - G1 Themes and Wallpapers

Before getting started I need to thank some people who have hlped me with this project or offered help to me. These people can be seen as contributors to this project, and I am grateful for their help.

Rogue7474, thanks for the help even though we never got it to work right. Hopefully we can continue to work together!

Also, before we get started, you will need root, and Jesusfreke's Mod rc30 installed(pref. v1.2), or RC8.
THIS COULD BRICK YOUR PHONE!
While I highly doubt it will, it still could!
If you are going to do this, I very highly URGE you to install the G1 engineering bootloader. With this installed, if something does go wrong, your phone is salvageable!
JesusFreke's Mod RC30 update V1.2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443713
G1 Engineering bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=455860
One more thing! Let it be known that this update will wipe your phone! (This means all your apps, data, etc. will be gone and you will have to sign into your gmail account once more.) This has to happen to install the theme correctly!
However, after you have done this once, and providing you still have the theme installed, you will not have to wipe your phone for future updates, I will provide another update which will install updates to the theme and will not wipe your phone.
With all that said an done I can get rid of that bold font.
This is a very simple process thanks to Jesusfreke helping me understand how to make an update.zip file which will work with his mod rc30 update.
Simply download the file, place it on your sdcard, boot your phone into the recovery mode(power+home), and hit alt+S.
Once it says its done, reboot the phone and enjoy!
Let me know if you run into any problems at all!
Let me know what you want to see in the next release, be reasonable I'm not a master image maker, and android does some strange things to some images.
Let me know if something seems out of place, or wrong.
I will try to resolve all issues as quick as I can.
The non destructive updates are for those that already have the theme installed and wish to upgrade to the newest version.
The destructive updates are for those that have never before installed this theme. This update will wipe the phone as is required the first time this update is installed.

Ok, well I applied it....
Here goes nothing.
US G1 running JF RC30 1.2 and dev bootloader.
I just backed up all my apps using astro too.
Welcome to T-Mobile G1...
See you in a minute.
I don't wanna get off topic here, but we need an all inclusive (how to back up your stuff) thread. Something that hits on Astro, My Backup, TXTract etc... and I need to pull up that thread about backing up your desktop layout and read that...(just can't remember which forum it was on...thing it was AC.com)
Thanks so much for doing this. I'm glad we finally got something different to look at. I'm glad someone is out there defending the pretty.
PS: FIRST!!!

good job man keep continues

Looks good, except I'm having a bit of a problem. I don't have my browser icon. Kind of weird. So, thinking I could get to my browser by doing a search through the widget, "android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly." I'm going to flash Jesus's V1.2 back on, and then try this again. Will post back.

WOW
this is remarkable! I haven't been here for a while. but that just gos to show that in time anything is possible. keep up the great work. will report if i catch any bugs. THANK YOU

very cool
But you'd think they would have made it easier to skin/theme, I mean what's the first thing most of us look for as soon as we get a new phone, myself its walls, themes and ringtones in that order and I don't think I'm that diferent than the average g1 owner, and the average g1 owner is very different than the average mobile user.
But everybody wants to personalize a new phone, that's why we don't all wear the same clothes...
To the OP, thanks for all this hard work you have given to the community.
Bhang

See I knew it. I always had my faith in the awsome ppl here @ XDA-Developers.com. Just can't wait to see what's in store for the future, I know it will be more things to come that'll make you wish we never should of doubted the G1 and Android. Keep up the g00d work guys

Got it to work. Looks great! Except i now have to re-enable my browser Auto-Rotate. No biggy though, great work!

I've had a small amount of trouble with this, although I'm not convinced 100% that it's at fault.
I've attempted to install this on my uk t-mobile g1 and it seemed to flash ok, however I couldn't get past the sign up screen as it force closed before completing. I re-flashed back to my original modded TC5-RC8 and the problem persisted until I then forced a hard reset ALT-W in the bootloader.
On my second attempt (I know I'm an optimist) I just got a hang on the g1 splash screen (Which I managed to recover via adb). I'm thinking it's related to my being on TC5-RC8 as opposed to RC30.
Any ideas, or has anyone else had more luck with TC5-R8?

All the apps for the base rom have to be resigned separately /system/app. So if you use the UK rom some apks will not be signed and cause a looping android or crashes. I had actually done this to the UK rom(skinning) but I am a mediocre image manipulator so i just changed hues.
This will work with with RC30 JF image. not the uk. If its needed I can remake his work with his permission for the UK rom.

Ive modified it for use with the uk rom here is the download link
http://rapidshare.com/files/175199050/update.zip.html
let me know if works

To All:
About Koush's auto rotate browser, if you replace the browser in that update with his, one of the status bar images will change I believe, no biggy, you will just need to replace it the image if you like. I may do this then post his auto rotate browser.
Thirdly for those missing icons, it is likely maybye something did not get copied. If this is the case, and you are missing programs, please let me know which one as I can send them to you and you can manually push them to your phone without having to do another wipe.
Bhang: Google made this really difficult.....I agree you would think that themes would have been a first to settle....SHRUG
EDIT: afbcamaro, Thanks so much for taking the time and doing this. With the rc8 update does everything look the same?

Excellent job !!!! Patience is the key !!!

When I go to do the auto-rotate browser, there is no room left. Oh well.

To push file to the dir /system NEVER do it while the phone is on, running normally. You need to boot into recovery mode and push it from there.
when you get into recovery mode you will need to type the following to mount /system
adb shell mount /system
adb push /whereveryoufileis/Browser.apk /system/app
This will eliminate the problem you are having.
Stericson

i found a bug
Everythings good. But I found something. When you make a folder and open it the res is off
Hope you can fix this its not a biggie but I told you I would report any bugs. Thanks again

So when you make a folder in the file manager or what? You have to be specific as to what program you were using, etc. I have to know exactly what your looking at....maybe you can take a screen shot?
Stericson

nice work stericson!
some things i noticed:
-opening a folder (shortcut) on the desktop. label is not displayed, and folder contents are not superimposed enough when its in the foreground.
-can't see the highlight when pressing an entry (inbox, sent, etc.) in the gmail app.

Ok. first, thanks for reporting back.
What do you mean the label isn't displayed? I put items on my desktop and I can see all of theie labels. I am also not catching what you are trying to tell me about the folder contents not being superimposed enough when in the foreground, maybe a screenshot would help.
Also the highlight, when pressing an email, etc should turn a bright white, as it does for me, does it do this for you? Also, what suggestions would you have for the colors or solutions to these problems?

[Q] De-Odex Stock Rom?

Hi, I would like to De-Odex the rom I currently have on my phone.
Is there an easy way to do this?
I've read:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/xeudoxus/47283-release-xultimate.html
and
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-themes/4620-how-manually-deodex-your-phone.html (there is also a post about this on here)
The xUltimate tool will not work for me, so I need another option.
Phone: HTC Evo
ROM: Stock 3.29 OTA
Rooted (ofc)
Thanks for the help.
Sorry if this is no help, but a deodexed version of the 3.29 OTA is posted somewhere in the dev section. Is there a particular reason why you want to deodex it yourself?

I've been switching between roms but I keep coming back to my original stock one. It's still odex'd and I would like to theme the battery icon on the status bar without having to set everything back up on a fresh rom. Since it reads half when 80% of my battery is remaining.
Thanks for the quick response.

and you said this didnt work for you?
i didnt even know you could deodex your own rom!
going to try this soon!

It wasn't that it didn't work.
I just got an error with Java, not sure how to fix it. Some said to re install java, but i've installed JRE and JDK from 5u20 to 6u21 (32 and 64 bit). Everything I tried gave the same error.
I am going to try asking on their forum and see if they can tell me what I did wrong.
I have a feeling it has to do with the 3.29 OTA update. :-/
Good luck and if you get it to work please let me know your setup.
and if you can't run step 3 let me know... that way I am not the only one to seem that crazy.
option 1 and 2 just adb pulls your /system/apps and your framework.
just got stuck starting option 3:
Starting AccountSyncManager.odex
*Deodexing...
Error occurred while loading boot class path files. Aborting.
org.jf.dexlib.Code.Analysis.ClassPath$ClassNotFoundException....
lower it says
at org.jf.baksmali.baksmali.dissambleDexFile(baksmali.java:103)
and it just gives some more errors until i close it down
i was sooo excited to get this done!
Ahhh! I'll see what I can find out on their forums.
Despite the tutorial saying "Manually De-Odex Your Phone" I think it may be just for droid phones. It was posted in the Moto Droid sections of the forums.
Here is the error I was getting:
Code:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError
Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException
at java.util.Properties$LineReader.readLine(Unknown Source)
at java.util.Properties.load0(Unknown Source)

at org.jf.baksmali.main.<clinit>(main.java:69)
Could not find the main class: org.jf.baksmali.main. Program will exit.
Press any key to continue . . .
dang it...
i just updated my java and nothing, still same error. well let me know what they say. i was about to make an account to post over there but i'll let you do it then.
keep me updated!

Both our problems have "org.jf.baksmali" involved.
Hopefully we'll have some answers soon.
well i ran a test and everything said pass, including the odex and deodex. i installed the latest java, and same problem. i had the phone originally as mass storage, so i tried under charge only, and still same problem.
i really hope we get a solution to this
I did some more reading and it seems that app is designed specifically for droid x phones.
I'm now going to try a more hands on approach using avabox...will update tonight.

Were you able to get it DeOdexed?
I found this after some searching... It seems to be the LONG way to deodex an apk. It was written in 2009 so idk how reliable it will be.
http://androidnetwork.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=55
Edit: Link to Avabox: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=697459
[UPDATE] I tried Avabox and it de-odexed all of the files that I adb pulled. I copied the De-Odexed files back to their respective folder on the /system/, and deleted "rm /system/app/*.odex" (Removing all the .odex files) and rebooted.
I got stuck on the white "HTC Evo 4G" screen and could not get passed it.
I am not sure what I messed up. Maybe I need to resign the files? I'll try that tomorrow.
Let me know how your attempt went. :]
When I left for school I left the script deodexing my app folder...it seems to have done the job and there were no errors. It's doing the process for the framework files now.
Once I move it over to the phone we 'll see if it worked...
I'll update here when I find out...
Swyped from an HTC Evo on MetroPCS...
i just tried that too and i got stock in a bootloop.
the avabox script does deodex all the app files. it doesn't do that for the framework files...it seems it'll only deodex .apk files.
anyways, i deleted everything from my /system/app folder and then pushed over the deodexed apks...i also did this for the two apk files from system/framework and the phone did the bootloop thing. so i put back the original /system/framework files, effectively only leaving changed the contents of /framework/app/ and still, bootlooping.
i'm restoring right now...i'll try it some more at another time.
let me know if you figure it out!
I was reading some of the comments on this thread(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=598026) They we're saying about problems with de-odexing the framework.
Do we need to resign system apps before we push them back?
I am optimizing my apks now, going to batch resign then try putting just the apks back on.
Well I messages avalaunchmods asking the same thing...if anyone knows it should be him...
Update if you get it working please!
Swyped from an HTC Evo on MetroPCS...
Unfortunately, I still don't have any good news. :[
I tried resigning the de-odexed apk's and replacing the ones on my phone.
This got stuck at the white HTC Evo 4G screen.
This failed
Then I optimized, signed, and zipaligned.
This threw me into an actual boot loop. (I was excited... It's the first boot loop i've gotten.)
This failed.
Here is some semi-less-bad news.
I used http://circle.glx.nl/ to make a flashable update.zip for theme-ing. I Flashed it with success and was able to get to the lock screen. Sense UI along with just about every other system app kept force closing.
But I was able to successfully (even though I got FC's) theme and boot using that kitchen.
I am going to mess around with the different settings there and see if I can atleast theme my phone.
Any luck with your attempts?
i was at school all day - no news from me. this is very discouraging though.
i'm surprised nobody else has chimed in! considering how many people are making and releasing roms, some people must know what's going on here
Good news (kinda)
I was able to theme my framework-res.apk without any errors or FC's.
I didn't do anything to De-Odex it but it accepted the theme when I manually edited it.
There must be an xml that scripts how the battery is displaying %'s
since I have 89% of my battery remaining but the themed battery is showing 80%.
I'll dig around and see where it is and add it to my next framework recompile.
We're you interested in just themeing or the whole de-odexing (apps & framework)
If you want to theme it i'll write up a decent tutorial on what I did.
If not I'll write up a quick tutorial for the next root newbie who wants to theme.
Going to test run it and make sure I didn't mess much up.
Edit3: The bad, it would appear that you can't modify the .xml's of the framework. You can only change the pictures.
So the battery wont be able to have the exact %.
Modifying of any .xml leads me to a boot loop.
Tips are appreciated on fixing this.
I'll keep trying.
so here is what i've learned.
i had modified both .com.htc.resources and framework-res before. those files, at least in my rom, are not odexed. everything else in the framework folder is a mix of files, .jar files and other formats, including services.jar, which is odexed. that's why if we change the services.jar file, without the phone being deodexed, it wont work.
that's why i want to deodex my rom. i have too many changes already and dont want to re-do them in another, deodexed rom.
my main interest in deodexing the rom is to have the working battery percentage on top (which used to work on THIS rom before, without deodexing???) and to have a transparent notification tray.
and from there being able to make any other changes as they come up...
i'll see when i have some more time to try out other options, but chances are you will have time before me, so keep updating!

Rooting Gnex GSM/HSPDA v4.0.2 Optus Stock

Hey guys!!,
Yet another of my noob questions BUT, this time I think I'm going to take the plunge and root my Gnex!!! *scared* haha
I'm just having to many frustrating things happening on my stock Gnex, low responsiveness to the touch, slow-ish and well, isnt this what its all about!! =)
So a quick one, if anyone can point me in the most normal, simple and customizable direction, what do I do? I have searched for a while now so I have an idea where i want to go, either, Cynagon or AOKP...I'm hearing great things about AOKP...there from the same devs yeah?? (a guess)
So, I have a Samsung updated Gnex, in Aus and with optus. I'm technical so I'm getting a grasp on whats what but still not to clear on Kernels and radios....bit worried about that. Clockwork I'm guessing is like a boot manager?? Just asking that while I was here...
So Odin? Wug? CF-Root? I'm just not sure...
Thanks soooo much in advance guys.... I already appreciate your help. =)=)
*Excited!!!*
Cheers!!
P.S. I'd also very much like to return to stock form later on if I want...like locked oem and restored stock rom... =)

Try my ToolKit in the dev forum. Its simple, straightforward, easy to understand, there is a 1-click option which will do everything and every step is explained in detail.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310
You can also use my ToolKit to flash a Stock Google Rom if you ever want to in the future.
With regards to Roms there are lots available to try by very experienced developers that will make your phone better and plenty of kernels to make it run ALOT faster. I use bigxie's Rom and franco's kernel.
Mark.
Hi!!,
Thanks so much for your reply!
Funny as, I was JUST reading your guide. Awesome work man, very informative.=)=) and it would of taken some time to compile!. =/
Arm, I'm just wondering what file I need to backup to got back to the rom I'm on now? I want to be able to go back, if needed.
I don’t know what kernels are all about, and what do I need to do about Radios?? If I have the wrong one or something, does that mean I wont have signal?? Or bad call/signal reliability?
I'm looking at the build 23 of AOKP...I'm hearing its the go...and if i have a wrong kernal rom radio combo, what’s that going to do??, that’s if they correlate?? haha
Is security as issue?? Since these are built "freely" is there any exposure of private info?
I'm sorry for smashing you with all this, I'm just trying to get all the info before I do anything and to have a failsafe if I need to return for warranty.... =/
Thank you in advance!!! =)
Cheers.
P.S. Is Bigxie Apex?? I hear good things about that too!! haha. Its so hard, theres so many out there... Apex, Gummy, AOKP look great. I also really want a responsive, battery lasting, fast and importantly "stable" phone. So, not sure what you recommend. =)
Thanks already!! =)=)

If you goto settings, about phone then it will tell you all about your current rom build. If its a yakju build then its a stock google rom and can easily be found and reflashed via my ToolKit. If its been put on by your operator then you wont be able to obtain it online and you are best backing it up (unless you dont mind putting the google stock rom back on).
To do that you will need to set your drivers up first. This is important as nothing else can be done without this step. If you have Windows xp or 7 then its pretty easy, you can install the drivers automatically via the GNex ToolKit, then reboot your pc. Goto settings, developer options on your phone and tick 'usb debugging' then connect the usb cable to your phone (with it booted into Android). This should install adb drivers which are needed for communication when your phone is booted into Android. Start the ToolKit and select your current build version (which can be found in settings, about phone). At the top of the Main Menu you should see a serial number under adb mode which means your device is recognised in this mode. Select reboot options (19) in the ToolKit and Reboot phone to Fastboot (3). This is a bootloader mode for the phone outside of Android where you can flash and manipulate certain parts of your phone. As this mode is at a much lower level then the operating system it can be your saviour if your phone locks or wont start and you need to flash back to stock.
Once the phone has rebooted to fastboot mode the fastboot drivers should be installed on your pc. If nothing happens try unplugging and replugging the usb cable to initiate the drivers. If the drivers have installed before the ToolKit refreshes then you should now see the serial number at the top under fastboot mode this time. You NEED both fastboot and adb drivers installed on your pc for everything to work.
After the drivers have been set up you will need to Unlock the Bootloader to be able to have access to system areas on your phone. BE AWARE that unlocking the bootloader will erase EVERYTHING all data on your phone including the Internal Storage (virtual SD Card) so copy anything you need to from your Internal Storage accross to your pc and use the Backup option in the ToolKit to save any installed apps and associated user data that you want to keep. This is done in adb mode so your phone will need to be in Android.
If you want to back up your current Rom then Unlock the Bootloader, reboot your phone into Android, go through the setup quickly (as the phone will have been wiped), then goto settings developer options and enable usb debugging. Start the ToolKit and in the Main Menu select 19, 3 to reboot back to fastboot mode. Then you can BOOT into CWM Recovery without flashing it (9) and select backup/restore to backup your Rom/user data/boot image to a datestamped folder inside a folder called Clockworkmod on your Internal Storage. The rebooting into Android step after unlocking the Bootloader is important as cwm will not work properly without doing that.
Once that is all done you are ready to reboot into Android from cwm, get back to fastboot mode as before and select 1-click option (7). You will get a message on the unlock stage saying that your device is already unlocked but then it will just skip to the next stage. Be aware that when the device boots into Android the first time this is to let the user enable usb debugging for adb operations and if you have already done this then the ToolKit will wait for about 3 minutes before carrying on. Be patient as the ToolKit hasnt frozen, its just set to pause before carrying on.
Ok now thats all over with, on to your other questions lol. I would advise trying either romanbb's AOKP (build 24 should be up today) or bigxie's Apex 1.02 to start. Personally I use Apex as it has loads of customisation and runs very well but saying that I will be trying romanbb's new build when it is out.
Kernels are like the drivers of your phone. They set up how it works and what it can do. Custom Kernels can give better battery life and more power, performance, stability so its well worth trying them once you are rooted. They will tell you what builds they are compatable with but if you are thinking about the above Roms then you will be on Android build 4.0.3 and most new kernels work with that. I use franco's kernel but there are ALOT of established kernel developers working with the Nexus so you could try fugumod by nikademus or trinity by morfic. These are all flashed via cwm (download file, copy to Internal Memory, reboot to recovery mode once you have cwm flashed). You can enter cwm by rebooting to fastboot and using the volume buttons to select recovery, then press power to select, or from the reboot phone options in the ToolKit (19,4 in adb mode).
Bootloaders and Baseband/Radio updates are something to think about but not really needed if your phone is running fine. You wont notice any change if you update the bootloader as its just like updating your bios on a pc. Just gives some extra functionality or updates some deep down settings. Radios control the communication part of your phone and updating to a new one may improve battery, signal, wifi, gps lock. You can update them by either grabbing a premade zip and flashing via cwm or download the .img file and flash that via the ToolKit.
Dont worry about malware included in custom roms as long as its by an established developer. They would never put anything dangerous to the end user in one of their roms as it would harm their reputation and if anything was found by a user the rom would be taken down imediately by us mods to keep you safe.
I think thats everything you will ever need to know lol. Sorry theres alot I wanted to make sure you had all the ammunition you needed to continue and it took soo long to write I had lunch half way through
good luck.
Mark.
Ohhh man, thank you sooo much. That’s a lot of info and I really appreciate you taking the time to explain that to me Mark. Thank you!!!!
Ok, I’ve been watching some videos, one off of GalaxyNexusRoot.com. I think its his YouTube chan… He's seems pretty cool. Shows you what to do. I sort of want to do it manually so I'm understanding it all?, if that makes sense? I like to know exactly what my device is doing, why and how? haha. I'm a bit pedantic like that.
Arm, only a couple of things....I'm draining your life here...haha
I have a Samsung updated Gnex, throwing that in FYI. =) Not sure if the warranty centre would realise, probably so I should back it up as it is...on this note quickly, I do want to have a yakju (Google) updated phone though...hehe.
When I back up, does it flash everything? the rom, kernels and radios? (Mostly for my Stock setup for reversion, and understanding...)
With roms, where can I get the G'apps from? (If needed) And or the SupUser/Root files? (Separately I mean, so I can do this manually...if I'm understanding it properly... =/ )
Also, do these apps and others update as normal? Or di i have to update the whole ROM to update them? Like Maps (Navigation more importantly), GTalk, MarketPlace etc...?
And finally....phew...haha arm, sorry....
I'm looking at doing this because currently my device just seems a little non-responsive, laggy-ish and its turned off once.. =/ Is this all normal?? I thought for a minute my screen was faulty, like touches don’t always respond...I mean 90% of the time they do...I know, I'm nuts but it just ruins it for me... I uninstalled Beautiful Widgets and it’s sort of been better…maybe some apps aren’t configured with ICS yet also…I'm thinking it just could be the build? What do you think??
It's kind of weird to think that an individual dev has made. and is making more progress than the developers of the phone/software?? hahah...Anyway, I hope I've made some sense and I really, really, really appreciate all this Mark, all your time and patience with me. =)
Thanks again!!!!
P.S.... This should be it I SWEAR!! haha....
Just wanted to put these here...these are "some" of the problems I've been having... =/

A cwm backup will back up system, data, boot, recovery and cache but it will not back up your radio image so check your version in the about phone screen first so you know what you need.
The latest gapps flashable zip can be found in the development forum. Did the youtube channel not give a link to the root files? If not then I have attached the 2 files you need to push. Make sure to set their permissions too after pushing.
Without knowing exactly what you have put on your phone its hard to comment about responsiveness but as stock roms dont have all the optimisations that custom roms have they are definitely slower. A custom rom and kernel will surely sort out your problems

It means the version that the manufacturer put on the phone before it was shipped or a version that is supplied by the manufacturer. Unaltered by developers.

Ok cool. So when new versions of the apps come out on the market, I wont be able to update them normally will I? Which is ok but just wondering how that is going to go down. Haha.
Lastly, sorry man, I'm almost there. Haha. CWM doesn't backup kernel? Like my stock one?
So it basically makes a "phone" image, ExtPartition and all? Or can you choose these options?
Right, I'm so close now I reckon, today will be the day... I can feel it!!! Haha.

Yes of course you can update google apps via the market as normal.
Cwm will back up your boot image which contains the kernel. So yes it does back up the kernel.
You can not choose which options to back up but you can choose which parts you want to restore via the advanced restore option in cwm.
Let me know how it all goes

Ok, just before I do this...I'm like right here at the PC...ready! haha...
I understand all of it now, well. in theory...
Thank you for the DL link to the root.zip...
I DL'd the android SDK Kit zip also, but there’s no fastboot.exe??? Or anything like what I need?? haha, I may just be missing something here...
One of you links on you manual guide is broken...I think, that’s where you had it...I didnt want to harass you again but just some final things. =)
I'm really after all of what I need to this manually...for knowledge etc?? Hope you understand... You made this wicked awesome Kit, and I'm stupid and not using it...hahah...
So as far as I can see, I need:
- Samsung Drivers - which I have and that bits done... =)
- fasboot.exe etc (Android SDK Gear)
- Latest CWM.zip
- **Rom of my choice, which I'm going to take your advice and go with Apex. =) Latest 1.02 yeah??
- Franco Kernel, I'll try stock, but my feeling on it is that that’s probably been my major issue, or the cause of most of them... =)
Phew....I think that’s it...am I on the right track??
I cant thank you enough with all this Mark....seriously...your a very patience man. haha
Cheers. =)
**Update**
P.S. I have attached a file. Mark can you check it out and see if that what I need in regards to Android SDK stuff? I just got this now after I posted the above....
Thanks again... =)
***Update...again....haha***
Arm, just looking at these files, whats the boot.img? does that get copied over to the phone? Or is it just a command? The su & Superuser files in this zip are like a different size and modified later than your ones (newer??? =/)....I'm not sure what that would really mean...probably has nothing to do with anything but just thought I'd check with you....

Looks like everything in that zip is ok for what you want to do. The superuser.apk is a different size but im sure it doesnt matter.
In order to push the 2 files across to your phone you need to have booted into Android using an insecure boot image. This is a stock boot.img that has has some simple text changes to allow temporary root access (otherwise the files wouldnt copy across) Using fastboot you boot the boot.img file and then once you are in Android you push the files across and set their permissions. When you reboot your phone your original boot image will be used and you should have permanent root via the files.
Looks like you are all set
MArk.
Oh ok. So it doesn't stay on the phone?, its temporary??
So if this file say, is corrupted or malicious, (not really possible probably byt...) I'm in trouble? haha
Sorry, I have everything I think now, I grabbed the SDK of the Android website and I'm comfortable with that cause its "legit" I suppose. It doesn't have a boot.img file though. Can I make one myself so I know where its coming from? And where does this normally come from?
Silly stuff I know but, I told you, I'm CRAZY!! haha....
One very last thing...the permissions, whats that part all about...
Other than that, I'm pretty sure I'm sweet now...I also grabbed the latest CWM zip off the website too...so I'm cool with that.
......geez.... I'm killing you aren't I....I think you deserve (need) at LEAST 1 beer after all this....haha...
Thanks x 1,000,000...seriously.... =)

Its perfectly possible to make your own boot image but to be honest you might take another day or 2 to get all the required components and research what you need to do lol
If you go to your settings, about phone screen and tell me the build version (4.0.1, 4.0.2) and whether its a gsm or lte device (im assuming gsm as lte is america/canada) then I will attach the boot image I made for that device so it will definitely be right and safe. You can also use the su and superuser.apk files I attached earlier if you are unsure about them.
I dont mind all the questions as long as you end up feeling confident enough to get your phone rooted mate I would rather people ask too many (but the right) questions than just go blindly into something have no understanding about and end up in trouble.
Mark.
Your a legend Mark, I swear!!....haha
Ok, well, its a GSM, 4.0.2 Samsung updated Nexus....I think... I can attach some images. =)
The end of the line here...haha, arm, I just watched a video that completely skipped the boot.img part...weird...anyway, with the "su" part, I have 2 files there, as you've kindly provided, but in that step doesnt it need to be a su.zip sort of configuration? Just running it by you before I do this...
P.S....again....haha, arm, if I'm thinking about this right, does the step with "fastboot boot boot.img" will that affect the stock image?? As I think, if I'm right you have to do that "before" you flash your recovery?? In my mind would it be right in assuming....
-Unlock bootloader
-Flash recovery
-Make a Back up (so to get all the rom, including the auto restore recovery??)
-Set SU perms...with su.zip or su+superuser.apk... (if I'm right also, this step only if you want root perms on stock?, not sure what you would do with it though, only if you want to remain this way I suppose... =/ )
Is this right??
I was reading your "manual" post and I'm a little confused...as in, you cant reboot into Android after flashing recovery (to back up) as it will delete it, but to do so, you need to reboot into Android to delete the auto recovery flash file?? And you need su perms yeah?? Am I right here, I'm probably going crazy-ier...haha cause I've been at this for 2 days...haha...
Seems the boot.img step is the same as if you would flash a su.zip...(which I dont have, only the su file (no extension) and the su.apk...) not sure if thats the same...just getting my head around it here.... =)
Maybe I'm thinking CWM will "back up" the su perms etc and affect the "stock rom"...if you back it up with the perms, wouldnt that be included?? Maybe thats were I'm getting it wrong...haha.
Finally...........serious.....
If and when you delete the auto recovery file (if that really does delete it completly, I'm probably wrong about that too...) how does it restore??
Thanks mate. =)=)
I think thats it...when I have my head around these final things...and the last couple of files...Its time.... =)=)

There are 2 ways of rooting your phone. The easier (and non learning way) is to flash cwm recovery and flash the superuser.zip straight to the phone. If this is what you watched then tbh you might as well be using my ToolKit as you wont learn anything from the experience. The other way is the method my ToolKit uses which is to boot the phone with the insecure boot image to gain temporary root, then using adb to push the 2 files that I sent to your phone and set their permissions, then rebooting to complete the root procedure. The 2nd method is the one I thought you was gearing up towards and the best way if you want to actually learn something, otherwise as I said you may as well use the ToolKit.
I have attached every file you will need for the 2nd method and if yo uread below these are the instructions you will need to follow to root your phone. Extract the attached files to a folder on your pc, browse to this folder then HOLD the Shift button on your pc while right clicking on a blank area of the Windows Explorer. Select 'Open command window here' which will open a command prompt in the correct folder where your adb and fastboot files are.
These instructions are for after you have installed drivers:
fastboot-toolkit devices
Click to collapse
this will return a serial number if your drivers are installed.
fastboot-toolkit oem unlock
Click to collapse
and follow the instructions on the phone to unlock your bootloader.
Now if you boot into Android RIGHT after unlocking the bootloader it will restart the boot half way through so you want to do this normally BEFORE using your insecure boot or the reboot half way through will lose your insecure access (if you get me)
fastboot-toolkit reboot
Click to collapse
to get your first boot in. Once the phone has booted up and you have gone through the setup wizard, go to settings, developer tools and select 'usb debugging' to enable adb control.
adb-toolkit devices
Click to collapse
should return a serial number if your adb drivers are installed.
adb-toolkit reboot bootloader
Click to collapse
to get back into fastboot so you can boot from the insecure boot image
fastboot-toolkit boot boot_gsm_ICL53F_insecure.img
Click to collapse
to boot your phone into Android from the insecrure boot image. Once your phone has booted into the lockscreen you can carry on with
adb-toolkit root
adb-toolkit remount
Click to collapse
to mount your /system folder for root access.
adb-toolkit push su /system/bin
adb-toolkit push Superuser.apk /system/app
Click to collapse
pushes the 2 files across to the correct folders on your phone.
adb-toolkit shell chmod 06755 /system/bin/su
adb-toolkit shell chmod 06755 /system/app/Superuser.apk
Click to collapse
sets their correct permissions.
Lastly if you are flashing cwm then you will need to rename the recovery restore file if you are on a samsung rom. If this file is present on your phone and cwm is flashed, then on the next reboot the stock recovery will be restored and you will lose cwm. To get back to stock recovery in the future you just flash a stock recovery image.
adb-toolkit shell mv /system/recovery-from-boot.p /system/recovery-from-boot.p-old
Click to collapse
will rename the file is it is present.
Thats it! Reboot your phone and you should have root You can check this by downloading root checker from the market or just download a root app such as adfree or setcpu.
Mark.
I see you are replying to my thread already as I was making some changes so re-read the instructions as I rearranged them a bit to make more sense lol.

Does anybody know any way to manually insert gapps as an apk?

I'm trying to get my ROM all smoothed out. It a catch 22 system. I can load the sony xperia walkman and get it functioning properly, or I can install gapps. If I do one I can't do the other for some reason. So, I went with the walkman. Now I'm trying to figure out how to turn the gapps zip into a good apk file to load with android tuner from my sd card. Is that even possible? I was able to manually install a few of the apk's from the zip file, but 90% wouldn't install. I assume because I haven't figured out how to install the supporting files. How can I get the play store functioning, even in a barebones state? There has to be a way... this is Android!!! Lol As I stand now, I have the play store icon, but it only loads for a fraction of a second. No message of any kind. It just doesn't work. Any suggestions would be nice. I'm on the Bleu Mynt ROM if that helps you any.

You and that walkman app, hahahaha, your like me,"never give up",but anyway, open the zip file with the gapps inside and look at the folder structure, add the files to their respective folders on your rom, then you need to look at the updater script, which is in the META folder and see what needs to be symlinked and add the correct permissions for them to work correctly, you can also skip most of the bs,by just downloading what you need from the playstore,as far as gapps goes.Trial and error, you just have to keep playing with it until you get it right,it could be the rom,try a different rom also.

There is no other ROM son.... I'm only going to have the best. Period. Thank you for the answer. I'll work on it later. I'm going to go do some extra work today so I can afford the Galaxy S4 I was talking about buying. Lol
EDIT-----> My extra work got cancelled, so I can play with this all day today.... Makes me happy.
I moved all the files except for the lang_pico file because I noticed it was all languages besides english. I left it out. Is this okay? Everything is in the proper place but the update-binary and updater script. It's encoded and I do not know the name of the code to research. Can you tell me what language it is, and if 7-7ip or Notepad++ needs a plug-in to read/write or otherwise edit the script? What do I need to research here?
EDIT-----> I'm looking for something called Update.zip Manager 3.0. Is this a tool that will help me?

Here use this to decompile and compile apk's.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2213985
Thanks for that link. I can see I'm gonna have to do a lot more research before I embark on that journey. I need to get familiar with the terminology first. In the mean time, I found a pretty awesome ROM that loaded up everything I need with no problems, and it's very well put together. It's kinda plain, compared to the cool factor of the Blue Mynt theme, but it functions rather well. It's a good trade off. The ROM I have now is the Supersonic Unofficial CarbonROM by Wambo_Bombo. Have you seen this? My question is, do you have anything in the works coming down the pipe? I'd love to have something like this with your theme genius. Thank you for trying to help me sort things out with Bleu Mynt. I know you're a busy guy, and it was, and is appreciated. Let me know ASAP when you have a new release please.

Read my sticky in android/general... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466228
This problem is finally resolved. I found this and it works consistently on every ROM that I couldn't load gapps and the walkman on before. They are called Zgapps. Check them out if you aren't familiar. Maybe you know somebody else who could benefit from them.

Help with rooting Samsung Galaxy Light T399 - T-Mobile

Its been a while since I have rooted anything manually and i need some expert advice here.
I have someone unlocking my T399 and he gave me this guide -> http://rootmygalaxy.net/root-galaxy-light-sgh-t399-install-twrp-recovery/ the problem is the TWRP link is dead and i cant find another of that version anywhere. Does anyone have this or can I use http://androidforums.com/threads/recovery-team-win-recovery-twrp-2-7-0-0.836658/ or https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...recovery-twrp-2-8-1-0-touch-recovery-t2924604 ? Im assuming yes but wanted to double check with you guys before off and doing something catastrophic to my phone.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks

There you go
I upload TWRP Themed Recovery on Android file host there you find (IMG,zip, tar) file choose what you want:good:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=157735
I used the second one you linked just a couple weeks ago, and it appears to work just fine:

Hey A140 thanks a million! Hopefully I wont have any issues downloading it. For some reason I have had a lot of corrupt downloads from androidfilehost. I know they said they are in the process of moving servers? So perhaps that's why. Can you upload to one more place so we all have a backup here? So in the event others run into the same problem I am having we're all covered. =]

I will try and download soon as I just got back around to this phone again and give it a try and let you know what I think. Right now I have TWRP ver 2.7.1.0 for Galaxy Light T399 ? which appears to be custom and themed? I just now noticed it when rebooting into Recovery from ROMs restart options. It is white, brown and orange with a list menu. I haven't seen this before though again I haven't flashed any other versions of TWRP besides the touch so maybe it's the standard? I did have TWRP ver 2.8.4.0 for this phone which was the grey, black and blue big button themed touch interface I loved so much.
Aside TWRP matters im also toying around with Lightwave-V3 Rom by user @root@ which I switched to from TigerLillly by user DJBoxer. Both seem to be pretty good although Lightwave was suppose to have came preconfigured with a bunch of useful utilities / mods and it appears they weren't configured in the Rom's configuration. I'll have to take a look and see what needs to be modified if they exist within the build seems same with TigerLilly also. I'd suggest these 2 ROMs to anyone with this phone. Smooth, no bloat and no problems so far. However I am always up for trying any others if anyone has some to suggest. Post and let me know.
First post back here in some months. Now back into androids more and attempting root on a few unknowns so hopefully I will have some good material to contribute in the near future. Still hitting that learning curve hard trying to get with the future. I'm still oldschool @ heart stuck with knowledge of the past flip / feature phones, java, crackberries, outdated unlocking boxes and about 100 pre android phones lol. Have the parts to the first android still but unfortunately incomplete. Some interesting times I tell ya. Thanks to XDA and HOFO I'm picking up where I left off quite quickly.

I left a reply regarding KitKat and twrp in the hijacked mmarz thread.
as far as active links, here's one:
https://sites.google.com/site/bobzhomeroms/
also be aware when messing with recovery and roms on the Optimus V, you'll be fine if you have the original display (I think that's the Hitachi but may be the Novatek.)
it's been so long I forget which was which.
but during production, lg decided to add a different screen manufacturer, updated their kernel source with a driver to handle both.
older kernels than that will only drive the original screen.
I made a big stink about it for a while, while there was still development going on, and eventually people started patching their kernel configs to turn on the newer screens too, once everyone realized I knew what I was talking about.
so if you have the original screen model, you're golden. if you have a new screen and flash an older rom or recovery (like xionia, for example) you'll get a black screen with backlight instead of display output and be left with nothing but adb or poking around at the display blind.
fair warning.
Here's some Optimus S stuff I used to use,was able to download from here today, https://archive.midnightchannel.net/zefie/files/cell/LGLS670/

I remember from back in the day we had the screen problem... You fixed and addressed it...
But some ROM I baked up didn't work even with the fix... I had the Kernel made with the ROM and the screen still didn't work... I'm working past that now as a matter of fact.
Wasen't it the Pickasticks Recovery... or a file... or something either way I found your old post...

I might be able to help you, Tell me what ROM exactly and what it says is WORKING and NOT WORKING on the main page of the post... or a link... It could be like you said a simple set up.
But I do remember having to change something to get other carriers to work. Because it was only a CDMA phone. No GSM. If I remember correctly

you have to crack open the boot.img and replace just the kernel with a working one. it's "fun."
and finding a working kernel for the newer screens now as a standalone download is really iffy. (actually, see next post. I found /one./)
if you have another jb rom with working screen you can split that boot.img and yoink its kernel for the one that doesn't have more than a backlight. you can also plop that picasticks kernel from below into any blackscreen recovery images too, they split and recombine just like a boot image.
a lot of people call the boot.img a kernel, but it's actually a combination of kernel and ramdisk.
you can use osm0sis AIK tools to disassemble and reassemble boot.img relatively painlessly.
I'm happy to promote osm0sis's work. he does great things. drop him a donation if you're so inclined, he certainly deserves it.
by the way, don't try to insert the 3.0 kitkat kernel into anything else... it probably won't boot. jb is the best bet to try it on though, thekraven nudged me into porting that kernel from the p500 for his jb roms. I'm glad he did, because the experience has been very useful on other devices.
ok, here's my gift to y'all.
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=317344
archive of the primary goodies from my old failing NTFS external drive. We'll see how long it takes for androidfilehost to arbitrarily delete them like they did every other file I ever uploaded there for the optimus S/V with no warning or acknowledgment. they never even answered multiple support requests trying to find out why... I'm guessing they decided to clean their servers of things uploaded before a certain date, but no telling since they wouldn't answer.
in the kernels subfolder is a picasticks kernel i built for the old/new screens.
multiple recoveries. some are old and may blackscreen on newer devices, fair warning. some roms will be the same way. the twrp's may or may not have reversed system/userdata like my os2sd twrp, try and see. they should at least be good on any model optimus s/v screen.
several roms, including one harmonia, and PAC-rom from thekraven.
others folder has V drivers... and swype flashable zip, ripped probably from GB stock, maybe from froyo stock.
also multirom recoveries and installer if you like multiboot. thread here
have fun.

you need the correct .kl file, I've probably got one stashed somewhere.
it switches the two keys in software.
it's funny, because both the virgin and sprint phones have the same board, but the firmware reverses which key is read as which.
I'll look around and try to find the .kl file for you. androidfilehost deleted my flashable zips with those along with everything else for the S/V a while back as I was complaining about above, or I'd just point you there.

I can pull the one from the rom on my V and switch the keys.
no flashable zip, you'll have to use adb to install it, I'll post the commands
it's home and menu that are swapped if I remember right, is that correct?
it's actually a .kcm file, I've messed with so many devices I mix things up sometimes.
Sorry for being gone so long, yes those are the keys,my Optimus S had been dropped one time too many but i finally replaced it and am still interested in getting those files and commands
alright, I'll pull the file and swap those two keys.
I don't remember any oddball locations for the file across different roms... but since it has been a while since I did anything much with this device, just to make sure, I'll add a test to the instructions to make sure it's going into the right location.

Seems that it always goes to /system/usr and the two folders are keylayout and key(something else idr) the one that i cannot remember the name for is where the .kcm files are at
since harmonia has two applicable .kl files, thunder.kl and thunder_keypad.kl I'm not sure which to mess with.
they're in /system/usr/keylayout/
the process is to adb pull the thunder*.kl file from your working ROM (whichever file it is, thunder.kl or thunder_keypad.kl,) back it up on computer with a copy in case you mess it up, then:
change all instances of HOME to MENU and MENU to HOME. I can't remember how much difference the WAKE and WAKE_DROPPED field makes, but you can switch those too, or leave that alone and try it.
if you're using M$ window$, don't push the enter/return key while editing unless you're editing with notepad++, the default editor screws up carriage return line feed character codes. mac or linux shouldn't dork up the CRLFs.
chmod 644 the file after pushing it back, and chown root:root
I'd have to grab it from one of the cm rom files I uploaded for a better reference, and I'd rather not re-download them or try to get my failing external drive they're on to mount at the moment.

yeah, gapps suck. and it's even worse dealing with them on a device which has such a small system and data partition.
