MP3 as SMS (Text Message) Sound? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hi.
I need some help to set an mp3 sound as SMS (text message) received sound. I put the mp3 file into My Documents/My Ringtones and when I will set the SMS sound (Start/Settings/Sounds & Notifications) I cant find the mp3 on the list
Does anybody knows how to set it?
Tks.

Copy the MP3 file to My Device/My Documents
Start > Settings > Sounds & Notifications > Notifications Tab
Tap the Event dropdown and choose "Messaging: New text message"
Make sure "Play sound" is ticked, and tap the dropdown to choose your sound.
Your MP3 filename *should* be there.
Tap the play button to test that it is the right one, then tap OK.
You now have an MP3 sound for your text notification.

Ok ZenithUK.
Thanks for yours instructions.
Plz modz, close the topic.

Can use custom Notification Sound, but not Ringtone

I copied a group of .wav files that I use for custom rings and txt message sounds and such to my SD card. The files show up as options when I set the "notification" sound, but do not show up when I try to set the phone ringtone. Am I missing something here? Is there a special place I have to copy the files in order to use them as "phone" ringtones?
Just find the file in the music app, open the file you want, hit menu and select "set as ringtone"
Thanks! It's weird that you have to do that in such a roundabout way.
how are you setting them for text message tones?
try Rings Extended app
lets u choose any audio file on your card to set for a ringer or anything else
havent used ring extender, but ringdroid lets you take clips out of your music as well and then save them as whatever type of notification you want.

How to set custom messaging sounds?

Hello,
I've changed my default ringtone for all incoming calls with a louder old phone type ringer. I've never changed sms tones before.
Can I have specific sms tones for specific incoming sources? Eg. all friends on one tone and a special one for my office? None of the tones are loud enough for my environment and I do get a lot of texts from the office and for whatever reason they insist on texting emergency requests instead of calling me.
Thanks
Download Zedge from the market then download notification tones and after you download them and hit the set button in the app you have the option to set that tone for whatever you want.
sent from my GSM Galaxy Nexus
You can hook your phone up to your computer and put any sound you want into the "Notifications" folder. Those will then show up when you go to select them.
You can assign different apps to ring differently, and assign specific contacts a ringtone. Not sure about groups, though...

Thanks - I've installed Zedge, I then went to my phone system options, sound, default notification. If I select zedge, it says there are no tones. Is there a place to load it on my phone from my computer? I don't need any katy perry songs, just a really loud ring or buzzer. I put a custom sound in my internal storage notifications folder - I'd like to make that the default sound for only one sender of texts, everything else could have the default sound.

Thanks I tried a few different sounds but no matter what I pick when a new text comes in I only get a very quiet ding dong type sound.

So you're saying when you go into Settings > Sounds > Default notification, no matter what you set it to your incoming notification is different? Even with stock sounds?
Have you gone into Messaging > Settings > Choose ringtone, and select "Default ringtone" from the scrolling list. Does it change? It should play the sound when you touch it.

Yes- no matter what sound I choose even stock sounds - I get a double chime - kind of like ding dong. I'm using full stock Verizon GN. No rooting.
I can change the default ringtone for phone calls.
I did also reboot after changing the default and I still get the ding dong type sound which is not the sound I set for it. The sound it makes is Pollux for incoming SMS messages but I've tried to set it to several others such as even vega or proxima but it always makes the Pollux sound.
I'm going through
- settings
- Sound
- default notification
Is there some place else I should be going to to change the sms incoming text sound?

Settings / Device / Sounds and Notifications

On the above settings, I am trying to add custom ringtones. If I click on "Ringtones" I get a list of ringtones to choose from, but at the bottom of the dialog I also have "Add Cancel OK". I can click on the "Add" and add my own ringtones. This is great.
However when I click on "Notification ringtone " I do not have the option to Add any new tones. Why is that?
To complicate matters a bit more, in this list of available Notification ringtones I have a bunch of sounds and at the top there is "Silent". If I select this it would mean that all my incoming messages will be silent.
If I want however to silence just one or two contacts, I go to the contacts, select the contact, edit it, and try to modify the field "Message tone", but now this list does not contain "Silent" anymore!
In other words, I cannot add a custom sound file for "Notification ringtone" (there is no Add button) and I cannot select "Silent" Message tone for a particular contact as it seems this option has been removed! I can only select "Silent" Message tone in the Sound settings for ALL messages!
Is there a way around this?

Messages Notification Sound Change

I know how to change the general notification sound, and it works; but how do I change the notification sound with a custom .wav or. mp3 and it actually works?
I chased it in the Messages settings and it shows the filename selected. When I exit the settings menu and receive a text, it plays the previous default notification sound. I cchecked the Messenger settings and it still showed the custom file I chose as the current notification sound.
I tried the same steps and restarted the device and the sound never actually changes.
Any ideas?

I think you need to convert your audio file to .ogg file
Also, I discovered you have to wait about 30 seconds after you select a sound for it to be activated.
There are free mp3 to ogg convertors on the Internet. I used this one:
Convert to OGG

Firstly,
I have a N975F Note 10 +
This is what i do .
My methods works fine for me
Just a pointer that i do use mp3 for any notifications ,ringtones etc , no issues.
i also can use wav files ,no issues .....
Not just ogg.
Anyway i use 2 x methods to access these sounds settings.....
either my sms notification sound or general notification sound
eg email, news etc
First through Sms/ 3 dot / /settings / notification /new messages etc.
I use a mp3 sound.
Secondly Device /Settings /Sound and vibration /Notification / etc etc
See the 2 x ways below for the relevant screenshot methods.
Good luck.
Just download one of those ringtone maker apps. Load up your file and save it as a notification sound. Easy Peasy
