Linux and the Dash/Excalibur/S620 - HTC Excalibur

Anyone know anything about interfacing this nifty thing with linux, specifically Fedora or Ubuntu variants?
I picked it up like... "MINT" for thirty dollars today, and was wondering why my computer won't detect it... does it function using MTP?

this is probably not the answer you are looking for, but i sync with a virtual copy of xp via virtualbox...works great.

Yes, that may work, but maybe I can figure out something using libMTP

Figuring out debugging on a Kaiser on Win 7 (32 AND 64 bit)

Hi all!
I need your help to get this thing working, without necessarily
1: Install Ubuntu on one of my boxes
2: Debug through VirtualBox
I have been mucking about with getting ADB to recognise my Kaiser but it's been a long run uphill without any results. I'd like to ask you guys/gals if you have a fully working adb debugging environment with your Kaiser in Windows 7, 32 bit AND 64 bit. I'd like to know for three reasons
1: I have two boxes with either version of Windows 7
2: I have a Kaiser I'd like to be able to debug so I can help out as best I can
3: It would be a great addition to the wiki I'm authoring
So, if you have and/or know a debugging environment set up, please provide details on what to get, where to get it and how to install it.
I have been searching this forum up and down and used Google but this is seriously kicking my butt right now . Thank you all in advance!
Another option would be to make a dual-boot machine, although i'm not certain how this would work with Win7, only done it on XP, however I'm sure it's relatively simple.
In fact if it wasn't for the fact that I need my desktop as a file and print server it'd be dual-boot already.
I'm resurrecting an older laptop at the moment purely as a linux box to use as a dev environment, which is fun as anyone who has an acx100 wifi chipset will tell you (having to go back to Ubuntu 6.10, which is the last fully acx100 aware version I can find).
Dual booting involves either, repartitioning your hard drive, or installing another drive for Linux, I find having about 10GB is enough with maybe 1GB or so for swap, this is usually plenty for a decent dev environment with a lightweight GUI like Xfce or even Enlightenment, if you want bells and whistles, (Gnome or KDE), maybe as high as 20GB.
Some feedback
I've been trying to do this on two Windows boxes for a couple of hours and I have to say, it's pretty amazing that I can't seem to get this working in any other way that either installing Ubuntu or Windows XP.
I've been trying the drivers that came with the Android 2.x SDK because these should be working. Is there anything preventing these drivers from working on our Kaisers and should I in that case get other ones (please provide a link)?
I'll try using a Live CD of Ubuntu and boot up my 64-bit box and see if I can get that to behave. Will report back as soon as its done.
It may be something weird, because I connected my kais130 to my old armada 500 laptop yesterday, which is running an old 6.10 version of Ubuntu, and it connected in USB with not a care in the world, powered down, swapped drives to my XP drive, and rebooted, it too detected the kais, yet on my 1.6Ghz dual core netbook, not a flicker, even running the latest 9.10 ubunto on live cd, not a thing.
I'm starting to wonder if sometimes the lack of connectivity is down to hardware on the PC side?
My old laptop however hates even ubuntu 6.10, so I may have to go to another lighter distro, probably slackware based, in order to get decent speed without the damn memory hog of a gui ( gnome or kde ) and the ability to compile my acx100 module without all the ubuntu hand-holding sudo stuff getting in the way.
I just finished a guide on the wiki I'm authoring to get debugging up and running on Ubuntu 9.(Karmic Koala) and it worked on two of the machines I got around here. One of those machines is the one with 64-bit Windows 7 which I couldn't get to work before.
I threw in a Live CD of Karmic Koala and made a couple of changes to the udev rules and it worked from the first get-go. Same with the other computer, which is a laptop which just so happens had Ubuntu installed in it already. I followed the guide I wrote and it worked without a hitch.
My limited knowledge about drivers and hardware leads me to think there's something going on with either the driver having a problem realising there is an Android based device connected to it, or it is something else entirely.
I wish I had a it more knowledge about these things, if nothing else to be able to get some kind of log/dump/debugging info out of Windows that I could share with the rest of the people around here, which might make us nail down the culprit and get rid of these problems for good. Or until the next version of Windows gets released.
Anyways, it is now up and running on my Ubuntu-laptop, so now I can at least get some more info about what's going on in Android when it locks up, freezes or just FC's.
Ditch VirtualBox. USB support on it is pretty crappy.
I build all of my roms on Ubuntu sitting on VMware Player. Very seamless experience.

[Q] Windows Drivers Annoyances

One of the major annoyances I have with android is that windows can never find all the drivers no matter what I try to do. Im not positive that it is all android devices but it was that way with both my Captivate and now my Epic. This is especially true with the bluetooth. Just today I have been fighting with it trying to get PDANet working. Has anyone else had this problems? Any solutions? How do you guys get tethering to work?
I've never had any issues. The problem, most of the time, is the USB cable.
Do you know of a way to remove all drivers you have previously used to be able to start over?

There are various programs that do that, Google should have 'em.
What's the trick on getting drivers to work for Windows 7 64 bit? I can install them on the computer but then when I plug in my phone Windows just says. Drivers not installed successfully no matter what I try.

Not showing up in linux

So I have the vzw nexus....its unlocked, rooted and cmw recovery flashed. All this was done through my windows machine. When I connect it via USB cable to my Linux machine (Ubuntu) it doesn't recognize it, has anybody else had this issue and know of a fix or something special I need to do. I really don't like having to dig out my windows machine just to put pics and videos and what not on my phone.

Do a search for MTP on the forum. There are ways of getting linux to work with MTP, but it take a bit of messing around.
In the short term, install wifi file explorer from the market.
Thanx for the info....

Recognized via ADB?
after a bit of stuffing around (ubuntu) I found wireless ftp easier.
Or airdroid, which gives you browser access to your phone from your computer, so long as they're on the same wireless network.
I have found this guide. Working so far with the exception of the auto mount option, still working this part out. All credit goes to the op of the guide.

[Q] Tethering to Ubuntu

I've exhausted myself searching and asking around the last few days with help installing and running Ubuntu. I now have one last step before I bug everyone with questions about compiling. I need to tether my phone to Ubuntu, nothing has worked yet except for EasyTether, and that was a nightmare. It would have taken hours or days to sync the repo or whatnot. Wireless Tether for root users is not working natively like everyone says, so I'm here begging for help. Any insight into what I could do to get internet access on Ubuntu through my phone?

Try this one

I don't have a driver for my wireless card (wusbn600n ver1) though =/ I used to be able to tether on a previous install of Ubuntu. I guess I'll try 10.04 instead of 11.04 since they might have cut support for the file/driver that previously tethered my phone.
I always used easytether when using linux

I had easytether working at first but the connection would get interrupted to often, so I rebooted the pc and it wouldn't even connect after
Code:
sudo easytether enumerate
sudo easytether connect
It would say " couldn't get device MAC address " or something along those lines. Would running Ubuntu in VMware pick up my internet connection from windows?

okay, so I was running Ubuntu 64-bit on a separate partition. but now that I'm running it in VMware on vista 32-bit ill have to use Ubuntu 32-bit. my question is will I be able to compile android and all that jazz on a 32-bit OS?

Yes. The only problem, is I think ics HAS to be 64 bit. But I could be wrong on that. (But I doubt you'll be compiling ics unless you have a super computer lol)

I wouldn't think you would have to downgrade the OS just for a driver. You should be able to access previous Ubuntu repositories. However, Canonical did gimp 11.10 a bit by excluding Synaptic be default.
The below link tells you how to install Synaptic and configure it to access older repositories, but you can simply install Synaptic through the software center application.

Oh yes I remember when I first started using ubuntu i'd have to build the broadcom (a very popular mobile wifi card) drivers by and hand and manually insert the modules. But anyway have you tried the "wired tether" apk on code.google.com?

[Q] USB Drive Encryption Android - Windows

Using a USB OTG cable I'm able to read/write to a flash drive but I'm trying to find a solution to encrypt the drive so I can use it on my Nexus 7 and Windows PC. I see one solution in the play stroe EDS which uses TrueCrypt but looks like I need root to use it without having to decrypt to a local folder on the Nexus. The other solution seems to be for advanced users and I'm just looking to plug in the drive and have it work.
Looking at other solutions like IronKey (expensive) but there isn't an Android client. I searched Google and surprisingly didn't find a good solution to what I would have thought is a common user issue.
I don't need to block the NSA from looking at my data, as if that was possible, I just don't want to lose my usb drive and have all my data available to anyone with a PC. Thanks.
Have you considered going old school and just encrypting critical files using pgp or gnupg? It works nicely but is just a bit labor intensive.
Sent from my XT1031 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yea, but was hoping at this point there'd be a better solution. My N7 is already rooted so I may just go with TrueCrypt.
you might try cryptonite (https://code.google.com/p/cryptonite/). For encfs on Windows you might use encfs4Win (http://members.ferrara.linux.it/freddy77/encfs.html )
Ever solved this ? Im in the same situation, got a usb type c to usb 3.0 pendrive, want to encrypt both on windows platform and android
I was looking for a solution as well right now, couldn't find any...
