about 2 secrets - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV ROM Development

I have 2 questions that they are beating my brain for a long time and asked about them at several threats but nobody answered. May be nobody knows or want to share.
I am sorry if these questions are answered in some threats but I could not find.
1. "Showsim" registry: If we create a registry dword named ShowSim at HKCU\ControlPanel\Phone and give it a value "0", the contact names recorded in SIMCARD don't be visible at contact menu. That is good, but after a soft reset this registry value turns back to "1" dword value, why? Should we do something before cooking rom that ShowSim stay tuned after soft reset?
On HongKong ROMs this value stays at the value of what I want after soft reset.
2. Shellres.192.dll: If we want to customize the windows taskbar, we should change the shellres.192.dll. Well, but OS doesn't let me to rename or delete or copy this .dll even by means of Total Commander or Resco. Many people can do that but I can not, why? Is there any tricky that special to some ROMs? If so, what is difference on these ROMs from my official ROM?
Thanks in advance to who reply me...

For question number 2. Which Resco version you are using? Am using v7.5 and there's no problem on overwriting shellres.192.dll. Not sure if untick the option for "hide system files and files with the following extensions: .DLL, .CPL..." help. There's no secret on overwriting that files .

I am using Resco 7.5 too and unticked "hide system files and ..." but no way.
I saw many people who don't solve this problem when I were searching...

tried it also

you can try this, first rename the shellres.192.dll to shellres.192.old with totalcommander then put in the new file than delete shellres.192.dll.old sometimes i had the same problem when i do like this it work perfectly for me.
good luck

Not sure if there's differences in way of overwriting the file or just because of the existence of a registry key that allow or disallow the overwrite of dll file (this might need to search if I've tweak certain registry key but forgot to note that down). For Resco usage, this is the way i replace or overwrite the file.
- copy the file shell192.dll to a temporary folder in my storage card
- using Resco, navigate to the folder
- right click on the file, then choose "copy to"
- you will see a screen prompting you to choose the folder you want to copy to
- now click on "Windows"
- another prompt will be asking you if you would like to replace the read only ROM file
- answer "yes"

automatic install without hacking rom!

Hi Folks,
i found a trick to make an autoinstall from strorage card (like from extended Rom)!
autorun.exe looks for the file config.txt on the place is in registry stored in:
"HKLM\Comm"
"AutoRunCFG" = "\Speicherkarte\Autoinstall\config.txt"
so i changed the registry entry and now i am able to put config.txt and the files to install on every place i want.
on windows Mobile 2003 devices this works wonderful!
on problem i have now with windows mobile 5 devices:
when installing a question appears where to store files (device or storage card)!
can anybody help me to get rid of this question during automatic cab install??
i want install all cab files to device without any questions!!
pbelcl: apologies for my ignorance, but is this very different to a 2577 folder?
with a 2577 cab we could use this info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=225375#225375
and choose a default install folder I think for WM5.
V
Thanks for your quick answer!
i read the other tread and if i understood it right i have to remove the .dll file from my cabs?
i'll try this and tell you if it worked ....
I think the other way round.
I've never done it before, but you need to make a custom cab and .inf file, and specify the installation location in therere, and then the "choose a location" dialog doesn't come up. I'm not sure, I'll try this at home later.

Thanks, that would be interesting for me because i cant generate cab files because i hav no developer software for this.
i also have access to a cab file manager (at a customer) where i can edit the cab files and change them as i need it.
if it is possible to generate an "empty" cab file for me that would be nice ....
pbelcl: I never use the cabwizard either, I use cab manager. To make an empty cab, take any normal cab (download one of mine?) and just remove all the files from it. That's what I always do!

ok, this is also my way to get an empty cab file
there is one question interesting:
Sometimes there is a "CheckFile.exe" and a "CeSetup.dll" in the cab file.
Do i need them for any work during install this cabfile or can i delete them also?
I remove everything from my cabs, and then use cab manager and drag and drop stuff. So I've never used those files. I will have to read up on how to make a "normal", but I don't think they're necessary if you didn't put them in there!

Hi folks,
again my last problem with automatic install on WM5 devices:
when my automatism starts to install the cab files (from where ever) each time there comes a popup windows where to install the cabfile (storage card or device).
for my routines it is not important becaue most of my cab files only set some registry keys and dont install files on the device!
Does anybody know how i can get rid of this window and install the files to device WITHOUT question popup window??

ROM Customization Tool - Pandora PreConfig Launcher

So here's the scoop. You got this killer rom, but it loads a whole bunch of stuff that you don't want. You get around this by resetting before the configuration starts after aligning the screen.
You might have a host of cabs that you always load, and after you flash you need to run each one. Every rom you use it's the same thing - flash the rom, then load all your cabs.
Or, you may have a program you want to execute, such as enabling SetHSDPA.
Here's a way to "automate" it so you can use the power and flexibility of the PreConfig funtion as an "after the flash" customization tool, and make subsequent installations much faster.
You'll need a folder on your storage card called CABS, and in that folder put the attached file called CFG.txt as well as the cabs / exe's etc (unless they're already in the ROM, then just point the config file to the correct path) that you want to run. The CFT.txt is the file that will tell it what to install, and is exactly like the PreConfig.txt file - see my extended rom thread for ideas on what you can do with it.
Basically, here's the contents of the CFG.txt file I attached:
LOCK:Enabled
CAB: \Storage Card\CABS\A2DPFix.CAB
CAB: \Storage Card\CABS\ATIFix.cab
CAB: \Storage Card\CABS\Cingular_WAP_MediaNet_MMS_Settingsv2_No_ICON_Change.cab
CAB: \Storage Card\CABS\Google Maps Cell.CAB
CAB: \Storage Card\CABS\Monopoly.cab
CAB: \Storage Card\CABS\NETCFv2.wm.armv4i.cab
CAB: \Storage Card\CABS\S2U2-0.72-WM5.cab
CAB: \Storage Card\CABS\Solitare.cab
CAB: \Storage Card\CABS\StartClean.cab
LOCKisabled
RST: Reset
Just list out your cabs or actions in this file - and be sure the files you are referring to are in the destination path.
To use this setup:
Edit the CFG.txt file and place in \Storage Card\CABS (if the folder isn't there, create it)
Copy your cabs/exes into this folder, being sure they are set to READ ONLY.
Install the attached cab, and after you reset it'll start the installation!
Once the installation is complete and the phone resets - you can remove the program from Settings-Remove Programs.
Important Notes:
Don't forget to make your CABs READ ONLY - or they'll delete after installing. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!
Ensure that the cabs you're installing does not require any user input. If it does, it will hang the installation process, you'll need to reset the phone, and not all of your stuff will get installed.

Is there a way to get cab files to default to installing on a Storage Card? I'm trying to prevent it from asking me where I want to install it and thus causing this tool from hanging up.
Nevermind, I made a bad assumption (yes, I know what they say about assuming things) that the PreConfig Launcher would hang up waiting for input for where to install something. I just tested it out on a cab that allows a user to override the installation directory and everything worked fine.
Sorry.

You could edit your cabs and have them install to the storage card by default - or at least I think you could. I'm thinking something like %storage card%. If I get a chance I'll poke around WinCE Cab Manager and see if it's possible.
I just tested it by building a cab to install to the folder /Storage Card, and it worked fine.

Matt,
While I'm not quite the noob the number of posts would indicate I am, I admit that I haven't done much w/ building cab's. In an attempt to build one to install directly to the storage card, I've used WinCE to alter the default directory and have altered _setup.xml file, both to no avail.
While my pride says not to ask you to tell me how you set the cab up to install to storage, I'm not above asking you to post the example you created to test this so that I can look it over and try to figure this out for myself.
Would you mind attaching a cab file that installs directly to storage for me? Please?

I could - but this is super easy. When you add a file, you get a window with three tabs, one being location. In that tab, you'll have the folder view. Click on the root '/' folder and press 'new folder'. Call it Storage Card.
That's it!

I must be an idiot to not have been able to figure that out (and my day job is computer programming, albeit on IBM Mainframes). Will work on this again once I'm back home. I'm sure big brother is already not too happy w/ all the time I spend on the forums anyway.
Thanks Matt!
so, if i were flashing a ROM i would flash, install the cab and then, assuming i already have my cabs and config files on my card, i hard reset and this should launch ok?
thanks,

From what I've done/learned no hard reset is required. You install the Pandora PreConfig Launcher and let your phone Restart. When it restarts, your cabs in the CFG.TXT file will be installed.
so after a flash or a hard reset (for whatever reason) you just install the cab and then soft reset and it will install your cabs?

Yes you can change the default install directory.
Matt,
Thanks for this great program. It makes changing roms SOOO much easier!! When combined with WinCE cab manager, you can autoinstall just about any program. This thread should be stickied.
Quick guide on how to get programs to install to storage card used WinCE Cab Manager. This guide was modified from K's FlexiRom instructions:
Preparing the cabs
---------------------------
- To set the cabs to a static path, install WinCECab Manager.
- Open a cab with WinCE Cab Manager and click on "CAB Information".
- Double click on "Default Install Dir" then select "Installation Directory"
- Change the default install directory to what every use desire. Do this by creating new directories under "/". For most users wanting to install on storage card, change path to "/Storage Card/Program Files/cabname". Before moving on to the next step, make sure that once you make the folders, click the desired installation path and click "APPLY".
- After applying the new default installation path, choose "Do not allow user to select installation directory"
- Check if there "Setup dll" is present under Cab Information. If setup dll is present, delete it off. [this step is from K's instructions, not sure if it is necessary or not. I've been doing it.]
- Save the cab then right click on the can and select "Read Only" and click apply/OK.
- Check and prepare all the cabs you want to auto install and place them into the CABS Folder of your storage card.
PS Using WinCE Cab manager, you can also modify the shortcuts of the program.

How to change start menu button image on wm6.1?

Hey! Can I change my start menu button image on wm6.1? I mean is there this image exist somewhere in the windows folder so I can replace it like the boot screen? (without any 3rd party apps like wisbar)
Thank you!

any idea?
2 ways useing the program called wisbar google it
or make your own rom from scratch and hack some dll which include the image you can also find a description somewhere in the forum which dll not for most peoples though
but which dll..I'm gonna search the forum for this. Thank you!

i can't say for sure but i think its the shellres.dll file that has the image in it
Where is shellres.dll located?? I can't find it.
Edit: I found it And how can I replace the image in the dll? I can't even copy it out from the windows folder... I tried with total commander but no luck :S
as i said you have to cook your own rom from scratch on the computer to get the dll into it
pretty much what all the people who make roms in this forum does so as i said it's not something for the most users
you can prob read about how start learning to cook roms in the wiki pages of your device
you can do this without cooking it into the rom. With WM6 the file is shellres.96.dll. Use reshacker to replace icon number 288, then you must "sign" the DLL using this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1262575&postcount=1
finally, copy it into the windows folder (you may have to rename the old one first)
soft reset and you should be good to go!
since you're having problems copying it I've attached a copy
BTW if you do this and it screws up your title bar icons it probably means that WM6.1 uses a different DLL. To fix it just delete or rename the DLL and reset.
i looked for this file on my wing (it has wm6) and there is a file named shellresapps.96.dll, so i am sure that it's probably not the same file....and it will not allow me to copy it to my pc so i can look inside of it, any ideas?

23088_Mega_WWE_3G Slightly Changed

Hi All
I made some changes to 23088_Mega_WWE_3G by TAI (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=458456&highlight=core+21869)
Apps removed: iContact, FingerKeyboard, Skyfire and Showcase.
Changed couple of manila files:
-Removed clock background from homepage
-Changed manila slider and tab background
Changed splash screen (sample below)
Images are not mine, can't remember exactly where I got them from.
For the purpose I used ROMDonald kitchen (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319970)
All credit goes to TAI (thank you for all the great ROMs).
Download ROM: http://rapidshare.com/files/415414292/23088_Mega_WWE_3G_Pharmakos.rar.html
In case you're looking to have Solitaire and BubbleBreaker, below the links for the cab files.

Disclaimer: I flashed it to my device and so far has been working with no remarks for about a month now. However, use at your own risk.
Notes: After you flash, you should update weather from weather tab, once updated, go to: Start>Connections and click on "Weather". This is necessary for the weather info on homescreen to be updated, also if you don't do this before re-starting the device or before turning off, when you restart again manila won't load.
Recommendations:
1.This ROM has very low reception with radio 1.56.70.11, I recommend to use radio 1.47.30.10 (link available below).
2. If you do task 28 wit MTTY before flashing this ROM, please flash OEM Stripped AT&T and then flash 23088_Mega_WWE_3G (link available below).

Hi, the easiest approach is to go into the dump folder first and search the files you want to remove by name, also when you're changing the registry you will need to search for the applications you want to remove and remove the whole key with whatever strings and dwords they might be under it. Finally when you're editing the "initflashfiles.dat" you should remove from there as well any entries referring to applications you want to remove, also the info in "initflashfiles.dat" will give more detailed info on all the files which are components of the apps you wish to remove, this way you can go back to the dump folder and search and remove the unwanted files.
Hope this helps.

Well, if it is video calling that you're trying to use, to be honest I wasn't using it as my mobile provider is not too reliable with 3G. The only dialer I installed was PhoneEx and I was very happy with it.
As for Internet Explorer I wouldn't know as I prefer Opera. You might find an Opera Mini, personally I was using "OperaMini-4.2-small", whoever you may find the latest version "10".

Hi Pharmako,
I have a problem editing the registry.
I can easily convert the "default.hv" and "user.hv" files into "boot.rgu" files, but having opened the two "boot.rgu" and edited them with the notepad, even if I save them in "UNICODE" they change dimension end I have errors converting back to "user.hv" and "default.hv".
Even adding the first line "REGEDIT4" doesn't solve the problem.
Tried with WinXP notepae and also withe the "Notepad2"..
What is wrong?
Thanks

Hi eryunt,
I also had that issue. I thought that I had done something wrong along the way and I started the whole dumping, etc couple of times. Then finally I tried to first do all registry changes and then saving as > unicode. Meaning that I was first saving and then changing as described step by step in ROMDonald's manual.
So, bottom line: first do all changes to registry and then save as > unicode. And don't forget to add an extra line at the end of the text. Hope this works.

The problem is that in both ways I can't solve the problem.
First of all, is the line "REGEDIT4" on the top needed?
What I've noticed is that even the original boot.rgu, without any modification, can't be converted back into .hv file.
Looking at the text, after the modifications at the registry, when I save in UNICODE all blank lines disappear..
Moreover, when I open the boot.rgu file I already have a blank line at the bottom, I need to add another one?
Thanks Pharmako!

The problem is that in both ways I can't solve the problem.

Hi eryunt, "REGEDIT4" on the top is definitely neeed and even though you see already a blank line, still you need to add another one (know from experience ).
One more thing, once you edit the file, re-open it and look for the following: at the start of the file you will notice that there is certain character space (blanks) between registry values and after many many lines, somehow this spacing thrend dissapears, what you need to do is carefully check till the end of the file and repeat the spacing thrend were needed (I wish I had made a screen shot of this). You should be able to convert then without any further issues.
Please accept my apologies for not mentioning it before, but to be honest it kind of escaped my memmory in my previous post.
Wish you luck and if there's anything else I could help with, please let me know.

Extract SMS on WP7

Hello there,
just for your info - maybe it helps somebody:
after some days of trying i found the shortmessages (with tel-number etc.) and some other stuff in a file:
1. Explore your phone with Windows Phone Device Manager
2. goto \Application Data\
3. Add "\Microsoft" to the path (under the file-explorer logo)
4. goto Outlook\Stores\DeviceStore
5. Rename "store.vol" to something like "store.vol.txt" (it is mandatory to rename this file - without this step the file is in use by outlook)
6. extract it (drag n drop)
7. run perl script (#perl test.pl store.vol.txt)
8. See output
Maybe one of you could build a backup application or something like that!
Link to perl script:

Original source of script:

Edit:
Don't know if you've seen it:
\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Stores\DeviceStore\data
ALL emails and other messages + contact-pictures + signature (three sizes) (just edit the file extension to .html or .jpeg - hex edit helps to find what is right )
\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
-> TabsStorage.bin: Opened tabs from internet explorer (where are the cookies?! )
\Applications\Data\82A23635-5BD9-DF11-A844-00237DE2DB9E\Data\IsolatedStore
ALL Facebook-Information (if app is installed), including messages, pictures, notifications etc. etc.
\Application Data\Location\Cache
Wifi & GSM Data when features is enabled in WP7-preferences (encrypted?! don't know..)
Much more to come...
greets
endeffekt
Thanks! Looks interesting, I might try that!
Hey just wondering but does syncing with outlook have the option to sync texts? Only reason I wonder is because you said that file was in use by outlook....

Hey,
i just THINK it's in use
If you look at this file without renaming it's at 0,00 KB and you can't extract it. Maybe the contacts-tile or something else is using it
Hi Endeffekt,
thank you for this great hint!
But one more question before I try. Is it possible, to rename the file after the procedure back to "store.vol" without losing the messages on the phone?

WP7 creates a copy of this file (automatic), so no problemo sir
Great! Alle messages are there. But the script doesnt work for me.
Now we need a smart developer who can make a viewer for it.
Is there a way to copy the vol file back to the phone? Or is the file always locked? For restore reasons...
I think this is very interesting (possibility to backup/restore SMS), so probably we should keep it on the front page so the devs could notice it.
Has anybody tried to restore that store.vol into the device after a reset? I mean rename the current store.vol to any filename, then copy the backed up store.vol to the phone and restart.
I'd like to try but i need to get hold all my current sms!

Hint: it's an EBD database (like other files too)

SMS retreival on Windows phone 7 using device manager
Hey all.
I have an Samsung Omnia phone 7. Dev unlocked. Running 7.0.7004.0
Anyone any idea how to view the file in question? I need to download this file, and save the SMS entries to my PC.
When I use device manager, I cant see a folder called
\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Stores\DeviceStore
I mean, when I copy and paste the above text into the path, its just beeps and doesnt show anything.
On the root under file explorer, I have
My Documents (which is empty)
Windows (lots of files in it)
-ActiveSync
-Application Data
--KeyStorage
-AppMgr
-ColdInit
-eventlog
and a few others
When I open the Application Data folder, I only have a 'Key Storage' (certainly no Microsoft folder, and I tried typing it incase it was hidden or something , but just a ping sound and no refresh of the file list)
and when I open Key Storage, I have no files.
Any help working out why I cant see these folders / store.vol file would be very much appreciated
Does Windows Phone Device Manager not support this functionality on the Omnia?
Thanks
this should be a sticky, and testers needed
Using the diagnosis code 5**6244*3
I was able to open the Apps Launcher and Shortcuts Menu and can confirm that the path \Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Stores\DeviceStore exists on my Focus.
In that folder, I have:
temp
0
4
6
3
19
8
Each of these folders has a list of single alpha named folders (a, b, c, d, e, etc...)
Each of these alpha folders has a single .dat file
I haven't tried to extract those files to try to play with them. I don't know how I would with the Focus... But just confirming the path exists on my Focus and has the .dat files
thank you munkeyphyst, still waiting for endeffekt

Thanx for your hard work... Any success???? i'm intrested in the extraction of sms in the form which can b read on computer. i tried as you said renamed and copied to computer but i can not read that in computer... is it encrypted ?? Any help in that is appreciated.......
I've checked out all the EDB recovery/readers on teh net and cannot open one of these "edb" files from the phone.
if anyone knows the architecture of the file, I can parse it and have a program ready quickly.
some talk about EDB
