First SDXC card unveiled. Anybody working on a driver? - General Accessories

So, it looks like there's already a SDXC card. It's 32GB and read/write speed can hit 50MB/s. Not too shabby. Anyway, I was just wondering if anybody knows about any work being done on a driver for this; either by HTC or a third party.

I'm sure there is work being done, but not for any devices currently in existence. SDXC is not compatible with SD/SDHC devices.
Current expectations are for SDXC devices to begin hitting the market around the first of the year, according to CNET.
Which, of course, is a vast conspiracy aimed directly at me, since I was planning to get a Touch Pro 2 just about that time of year, and within 6 months HTC will come out with an SDXC-capable device.

doies this mean the 32 gb sdhc has been cancelled
i heard the 32 gb sd would be a hc not a xc

FYI, 32GB SDHC cards are already in existance, however, I am guessing that you mean 32GB microSDHC cards. In that case...
If you recall, 4GB preSDHC cards never got made by major manufacturers when the SDHC spec came out (even though 4GB was the theoretical preSDHC max). However, small manufacturers did make the 4GB cards and they were easily obtainable on eBay. I infact have a 4GB miniSD from back them.
I would guess that even if the major manufacturers do the same, that is skip over 32GBmicroSDHC cards, the gap will be filled by smaller manufactuers looking to make a buck.

no ui was just wondering

32GB has always been proclaimed as the theoretical limit to SDHC, as I understand it - in the sense that it might be possible to create that much storage on one, but no had done it yet, so it's not proven. However, more than 32GB is not possible with the SDHC standard, so if you heard reports of 128, it was likely referring to SDXC.
I image that once SDXC hits the market, SDHC probably won't have much more than 4 or 5 years of practical life left in it as device makers migrate exclusively to the more advanced technology - rather like you don't see many floppy drives anymore.

Best microSDHC card

Hello!
I want to buy new microSDHC card to my phone and I'm wondering which one is the best.
There are three priorities for me:
- SDHC
- 4GB
- minimum class 6
I found TRANSCEND microSDHC 4GB Class 6 and SILICON POWER 4GB microSDHC CLASS 6. Which one is better? Or maybe you advice something else?
THere is a lot of disscussion about this in this forum. Please search
Sometimes it's hard to find sth when does not speak the native english. Can you please give me the link to this discussion or just post the answer?

Thanks! I've already studied thread nr 1 and 3 and nothing special there. Number 2 is 16GB and 32GB - I need just 4GB and not for WM but for Linux (ext4 and maybe one fat32 partition on it).
well if it's a pda device then it's interface cant keep up with even the normal card speeds
so high speed cards only really matter when you have it connected to a card reader connected to a computer

So it's better to buy class 4 but 8GB that 4GB class 6?
i have not seen any difference personally between 4 & 6. so go for highest capacity.
i have used quite a few brands and all my cards now are sandisk. None of them have given me a problem.
most important thimg regarding performance is to make sure that its genunine. more than 85% of cards sold these days are duplicate.

I don't know jack about linux or 'rooting' onto an sd card, but if I were going to do it, I would make sure that I got the highest quality card available. I've corrupted my 16 G card too many times (mostly my fault, lol) to trust it for running linux off of it. Get something hardy that won't become corrupted, like if the device freezes and you need to reset it. My guess is that you're better off with a smaller card (like the 4 GB one). I'd stay away from a big one if you don't need it.
Basically, it's a huge PITA when your card becomes hopelessly corrupted and you need to back it up and re-format it. I imagine it's a nightmare when your operating system is running off of said card when it becomes corrupted.

what do you mean? TRANSCEND and SILICON POWER are genuine?
on my purpose, there ARE differences between class 4 and class 6 ,but there are to small differences in speed to pay the double price...I just using class2 Devices (on 3 PDA Phones,2 NDS and an PSP),i never felt there are to slow, yeah on PSP you really fell the difference between an MemoryStick Pro MkII and an Class2 Toshiba MicroSDHC,but for me personally it does not matter -the most of People buy Great Capacity Drives for Media Files right ? ....and Media Files like Movies,Mp3´s etc. running well on Class2 Cards!
Excuse me to say that...but SanDisk Sucks!
a lot of the Sandisk card have Chips from China
(i Don´t know on Class 4 or 6 Cards, but Class2 Card from Sandisk always have Chinese Chips....and there bullsh...)
Japanese Chips (like Cards from Kingston and Toshiba) are a lot better on speed and are a lot more reliable than Chinese Chips
I made my Experiences ,never by SanDisk....
just every Media Market have SanDisk- but that doesn´t mean there are really good..
I have Cards from Siemens,SanDisk,Kingston,Nokia,Toshiba and Motorola (Nokia,Siemens and Motorola are OEM- so i don´t know who produced them)) I have over 20! Cards between 64mb and 16gb---yeah and San Disk are the worst ..dood!
and there IS a Difference between Class4 and 6 Cards, but i think personally there are to less to pay the double Price for it
I have 3 PDA ,2 NDS and an PSP,all of them has Class 2 Cards and i never felt that there are to slow...most of the Devices on the market are to slow to feel the REAL Power of an Class6 Card!

patriot class 10 32GB microsdhc announced

Patriot has released a Class 10 32GB micro SDHC card.
Newegg is out of stock but has the price as $99.99.
Just thought y'all might want to know.
Edit: Newegg sez its availability will be 1/8/2011
Do our phones support 32GB microSDs? I read somewhere that 32GB didn't work with our Vibrants which was really ****ty but...was what it was.
Can someone either confirm this or deny it? Specifically, do so by testing with a specific 32GB card...

The benefit would probably be in it being able to keep up with HD video recording, and decreased time scanning the microsdhc card when booting up, or mounting or unmounting it.
Yet, the bigger the card and more data would slow down the scanning. Double edge sword.

Maybe. I depends on how many files it has to catalog. I imagine that a 32GB microsd with 10 2.3GB movies would scan much faster than a 8GB card filled with mp3s
Have you noticed that the card makers are going away from what the Class system is supposed to be. Look at the transfer rates of the Class 4 cards now and they are equal or better than some of the class 10 cards. Doesn't make sense to me, but maybe people didn't understand the Class system and its relationship to transfer rates.
So the Class system is supposed to specify a minimum transfer rate, which increases as the Class goes up.
However, it seems that it is applied arbitrarily by different manufacturers.
Check SD card wiki for more information.
Newegg says they are available
Newegg just notified me that the Patriot 32Gb class 10 micro SDHC is now available. Now it is $99.99.
Newegg also has a Wintec Class 10 32GB for 82.49 - it isn't by Patriot, but it comes with a lifetime warranty.
I have a Wintec 16 gig class 10 in my Vibrant.
Works very well, very snappy performance.
I've never figured out a way to test it in the phone, but thru a adapter on my laptop it hovers around 17-18 meg thruput both read and write.
(edit) BTW, I got it at Frys.
It was 38.99$
Nice price.
Patriot LX 32GB Class 10 benchmarked with SD Tools v1.3
(HTC Desire HD + Android v2.2 rooted)
Oh, by the way, about the SD Class system, it only rate the minimum sustained write speed of the card, but not for random writes.
Wow. That's pretty awful if the benchmark is to be believed.
i have a scandisk class 4 32gb , it has a write speed of 4.8 and a read 11.4
Semi-related, I have a patriot 8gb class 10 card that is holding up very well, including quick transfers. Patriot seems to be pretty good stuff, so I'm considering getting a 16 and passing the 8 down to my girlfriend. I don't think I could find a need for 48GB on the phone, except to hold backups for reflashing.

Nope, it only supports SDHC, not SDXC.

why not? afaik, the hardware should be able to read it, just at lower speeds (as even a "SD 1.0" reader is able to read SDXC, you just need the drivers...), and android supports eXfat, too.... so it SHOULD support it.... but not quite sure about that.... greets

I think there's a lot of regurgitating of essentially "what the box says" in this thread. You are correct, the hardware interface of SDHC and SDXC is exactly the same, so our hardware completely supports these new cards. The question is in software, which is hard to tell from what I've read. Wikipedia has this little gem to say:
"Other operating system kernels, such as Linux, make no distinction between SDHC and SDXC cards, as long as the card contains a compatible filesystem."
Since Android does support exFAT as you point out, it seems fairly plausible that these new cards would work in the GSII.

Early micro SDHC devices only officially supported up to 16gb cards, but could read 32gb cards. So what it "supports" isn't clear, since drivers may not be needed at all.

I've always been amongst the first to adopt higher storage micro SD cards (ever since the 4GB ones came out). At every step the official specs for phones only said compatible up to the previous highest storage amount, and yet they worked. This is a different standard, so higher chance it won't work, but nevertheless there is a chance they may work.

[Q] 64GB micro sdxc compatability

Does anyone know for sure if this phone is compatible with 64gb microsdxc cards. I need more storage and there are reports of these cards working with a lot of android handsets. I'd love to use my phone with a 64 gig card but if not I might have a reason to upgrade to a S2.
nope, max it can take is 32
no chance man
@bortak: is there any proof or is it just according to the official htc specs of the desire?
my opinion is: we can't tell unless somebody bought a 64gb microsdxc and put it physically in a htc desire to see what happens. until then i am not willing to loose my hope ;-)

well theres no proof but for sure you can try it but who want to buy a 64gb card if it probably wont work with the device? and why should htc give wrong specs to us(the customers)?

These 64GB sdxc still aren't widespread are not compatible with sdhc devices.
The HTC Desire does not accept SDXC cards.
@bortak and crimnous: just check this link http://www.androidnz.net/2011/09/sandisk-64gb-micro-sdxc-cards-confirmed.html
@loler90: for instance in germany you can place an order at every (german) internetshop and you always have the right to open and test the goods and return it within 14days or a month (i do not remember exactly) without any reason. your money is refunded completely if the value of the product is above 40 euros otherwise you pay the shipping costs. so i could imagine someone give it a try without the risk of loosing 160 euros which is the current price of a 64gb microsdxc on the german market.

I would be wary of using a SDXC card long term even if it works at first. My Lexar 32GB SDHC Class 10 worked fine for a couple of weeks in my HD2 utilising a 1GB EXT3 for apps, but then corruptions crept in on the EXT3 partition. Even after a reformat/reset of the phone, a couple of weeks later the same thing happened.
I spoke to HTC who reckoned that class 4 is supported on HTC phones but no higher. Something to do with access times being slow as the pay off for high transfer speeds, thus corruption occurred since the HD2 was not handling the slow access times appropriately.
So, an SDXC may appear to work but you better make sure you have a good backup regime in place that doesn't rely on the SDXC at least until it has proved itself over some considerable time.
Meanwhile my class 10 SDHC is now working perfectly happily in my Xoom tab.
this explanation sounds really strange to me, sorry.
peter
sent from htc desire powered by cyanogenmod 7.1
Maybe it sounds clearer if I put it like this:
Either Lexar's implementation of the Class 10 standard, or the Class 10 standard itself is not supported by the HTC HD2, according to HTC Customer Support. A year ago they told me this - it may have changed for newer models but that was their stance back then. The HD2 & Desire are likely to share some common hardware regarding SD cards cos they were release quite close together.
In my practical experience, the Lexar Class 10 32GB microSDHC, using a 1GB EXT3 partition with the rest in FAT32, apparently worked fine for a couple of weeks. Then the HD2 failed needing a reinstallation of the ROM/EXT.
After this reinstallation, it happened again after a couple of weeks.
Since using a Sandisk 16GB Class 2 with 1GB EXT3 & the rest in FAT32, & the same ROM, the problem did not repeat.
I am awaiting delivery of my Sandisk 32GB Class 4 which will be similarly configured & I am confident it will be fine too.
What makes me wary of the idea of using a SDXC in an "unsupported" device is that incompatability may not show immediately - it may take some time in use to corrupt something vital to the operation of the device (eg. apps on an EXT) or your data.
Just saying - take care!
incompatibilities between certain sdcards and controllers in cardreaders are nothing new they exist since those devices are existing. I would not blame it to the class10 standard which in reality is no standard itself it is a part of the sdhc standard. classXX defines just a speed class guaranteeing you certain permanent read/write data rates.
i fully agree with the rest of your comment. operating something out of its specs requires special attention.
greetings
peter

It was a Sandisk from Amazon. I would guess Sandisk have probably changed the card since mind as I'd got it when they were first released. I did find it had problems when formatted in exfat on my S3 but it worked fine formatting back to fat32. Sandisk apparently fixed this in later versions.

128GB cards will work, as to when they'll hit the market who knows. I'm hoping no later than October-ish this year, which would be one year after the 64GB cards. I will get one at release regardless of cost and confirm they are working in various handsets for everyone. Cannot come soon enough for me, had my 64GB since a few days after they were released and just not adequate for my needs.
The Galaxy SII Skyrocket is only rated to handle a 32GB microSD card, but easily works w/64GB microSD cards also.
So I'd be willing to bet the SIII would do just fine with a 128GB card.

uhs is only supported if the card reader supports this feature, sandisk also mention about this.
you can still use the same card in a non uhs compliant reader, but will only get the class 10 specification and speed.

class 10 refer to minimum speed so anything above is still classified as class 10, although transcend has released a class 16, but that not official, according the the SDA, class 10 is the highest.

It would be handy for people that want to play blurays either on their phone or through the HDMI out. Or for audiophiles that listen to lossless audio which takes up around 10 times the storage (which sound absolutely AMAZING with the wolfson DAC and voodoo). Or maybe they just want to never run out of storage?
A 32 gb card will only hold around 100-150 lossless songs, and an avg size mp3 you could have around 1000-1500. A HQ bluray rip avg size is around 8gb, which can only be played on SDXC because regular cards aren't formatted to allow playback of files over 4gb.
