Ok well I stumbled upon this forum in search of a way to fix my 8525. My problem was that the media player on my phone wont recognize the memory card. I upgraded from the Cingular wireless operating system to the AT&T version. I see that you guys have a WM6 version and hopefully that would solve my problem along with the bugs in WM5.
I had no idea I would be so overwhelmed by technology. I really hope this means Im just out of the loop and not that Im getting old.
I downloaded the file from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317952
but I dont have a program to decompress it. So I downloaded winrar from download.com and now windows still says it doesnt know what program it is and wont open it.
Can some one please give me a step by step on how to install WM6 for my Cingular 8525. Also, which version should I use? There seems to be many different versions up and they all have their own thread. As long as it will play my mp3s and have support for a 2 or 4gb micro sd
I swear Im really not retarded but I just dont have time to research all this myself.

if you don't have time to read up, then you shouldnt upgrade your phone. since you definately need to read up and do research, start with the wiki.

Thank you for your help. telling me what to search for was a huge help. I had no idea where to start. Im surprised how unhelpful people on this forum are to new guys trying to figure it out. They all say to search but dont give any direction.
By atleast telling me to search for Mrvanx guides I found them and I got it done. I now have Black Satin on my phone. Im not all that happy with the media player and the phone will randomly freeze up using Black Satin. Is there a better OS to use? I also really dont like that it doesnt have voice dial.

random freeze could be due to application you've installed has issues with WM6. just by wm6 black satin itself, does your phone freeze too?
The best place for you to start is the places below my signature. The WIKI first, since you've a lot a learning to do. Then Mr. Vanx Upgrade Guides; follow the directions carefully, don't take any shortcuts and you'll be flashing ROMs like an expert in no time. If you follow any of these forums for long you'll also see a great deal of frustration from folks who spend a great deal of time answering new threads on old questions that are already answered in the WIKI and just need to be searched (hence, your previous replies....)

I used Mr Vanx upgrade guide to get Black Satin installed. I will read the Hermes WIKI and Wiktionary next time I have a few hours to kill.
The freezing seems to have stoped after a few soft resets but I am really not happy with the Media manager. My main motivation for doing all this was because I really wanted a stellar media player. On my WM5 version media player it stoped regonizing my memory card and the only way I could play music was to go through file explorer and play them each individually. Even the media player in WM6 wont recognize my card. Its a brand new card. grrrrr
I have gotten countless error messages. It will also just randomly stop playing. You name it!

Your right I really dont have time to be messing with all this. Not that I need to validate myself to you but I have a full time job that occupies most of my time but when Im not there Im at my property management company overseeing my employees and making sure their working.
Unfortunetly this turned out to be way more complex than I originally thought. But as they say, if you want it done right.....

Was killing some time here at the hospital. My colleagues were really getting me frustrated, so I thought i'd spend some time here at the forum.....don't know it that was a wise decision........
I will say however, that I spent the first several weeks on this forum just reading threads and the WIKI. I was terrified to post, fearful of a flame. What I did learn during that time of observation and reading is that not too many people do it, and I saw how many of the mods got (and continue to get) frustrated at the lack of willingness of new members to take the info that is here in the forum and help themselves. I've just passed 100 posts but I don't think any of them was a request for help. Don't need much help as long as I can read....
Where are you loading your programs too? The mem card or the device itself? I have Satin and no lock up issues but I think the low memory is what is locking your device up. Also you can check Black sating website and he has a file cab with Cybertron Voice dial and also for Cybertron Voice command.

One thing for sure is that you will need a good deal of time when it comes to upgrading, flashing, etc. Not just the learning process, but the inevitable bugs and stumbles along the way. Especially at the beginning you need to make sure everything is done right (The Upgrade Guides help here as well as having Hard SpL installed). But this process does take time and if you don't have the time to spend, you're risking making your phone a brick. Once you get going it's a lot of fun. I'm flashing more often now than that homeless guy on the corner!

just because someone has it, it doesnt mean they are going to freely give it out to anyone. It's not being rude, just selective. For example, if I had this game. I would only give it out to other people that have contributed to this site, not just a bunch of leechers that gain info or software and have nothing reciprocating to offer. And secondly it would be via PM or other communication ways. Not posted publicly on this site (which is against site rules)

Quite true, but isnt distributing edited versions of Windows Mobile O/S.
I am not complaining btw without Kavana and Rickys WM6.1 i would be stuck with BT Bloatware.
its really not that great. i was able to nail every song on the highest settings with little effort. its mainly good to just show off. plus you need a good interneet connection to get the songs

I'm not a leecher. Never asked for a damned bit of your warez (I always hated the whole fake-music genre of games), but it seems like I hit a nerve with that comment. Guess if you have it, you're a leecher.
All I was saying is that having something like guitar hero makes certain people feel special...because they have it and others don't. If they let it out too liberally, just like the child in the schoolyard, they're not special anymore because everybody is the same again. They lose the "look what I got and you don't" shine.
It's a nasty attitude and shows that people really don't grow up. If you don't want to give it out, you really don't have to say anything at all. But it's the schoolboy in you that has to yell "MINE!"
To the original poster, Guitar Hero III mobile is available online. T-Mobile has it in their downloads as well. And I'm not sure who told you we're all here for the same reason: to help each other out. There are quite a lot of people here who feel they're at some elite status and can't be bothered with people who are where they were, say, ten months ago.
problem is, that most people dont contribute to this site ( or at least this forum) they sit here asking all sorts of questions, but never offer any help to others. Im not an eliteist.... i did what most techy type guys most like did when they first got their phones, they dabbled with it, figured crap out for themselves, and when they didnt, they found the almightly google for help. Once they started to put 2 & 2 together with what their phone could and couldnt do, they started offering help to others, and i stress help. Help is not giving out software that they have and saying: " here ya go! " help is actually resolving someone elses problem. and i hardly think that a software request is a problem. For those certain individuals that i've seen on this site actuall make a signifigant contribution to help others that are in need, when they've hit me up for software, i've always hooked them up, but for the ones that "hit & run" and have not had anything to offer to date, i dont give them anything. (and i stress give). its not like im going to be seeing these people on what you call the schoolgrounds anytime soon and i dont really care how many people have the same software i have. i do feel that some deserve it and some dont , based on their merit. simply googling guitar hero III and finding a thread in this forum, finding out that there is a guitar hero III for the mobile phone and then requesting it is not contributing anything in any way. ( BTW i've been with this forum since nov of 2006 and have had a smartphone since WM2003 so i dont know where you are getting your 10 months ago figure)
Nah, dude, that wasn't meant as a slight to you. I can't disagree with anything you wrote. I'm fairly new here myself (though I've had a smartphone since I had WM2003 on my Samsung SCH-i600 with Verizon). I joined it because it's a relatively well-respected forum in the smartphone community and a place that everyone asking questions elsewhere is sent to.
The problem is this forum just lacks moderation and organization. Being new here, I feel sorry for people just showing up and having to dive through this mess. Yes, a lot of questions get repeated. But it's fiendishly easy to say "justfuckinggoogleit.com" to the point that over 80% of a user's posts reflect that..again, without giving any real help. It makes the community look bad as a whole. That's what pisses me off.
I think being called a leech kinda set me off, too, since there's nothing on my phone (except the ROM) that's not either bought-and-paid-for or freeware.

Okay sorry such a seemingly simple question has to be asked when there's hundred of threads all about this phone. I've had it for a year and a half now, and I've loved it without any mods (cause I didnt know there were any for free), but now its slooooowwww.
Gets frozen on any MMS, keys stop responding often, free mem is constantly below 1mb, cant delete SMS because as soon as I restart the phone, they're back.
SO, essentially, I see there's a TON of awesome stuff to upgrade too. I really cant believe Ive been so oblivious heh. Where do I start. I want one of these ROMs. One where I can backup all texts, then delete a year and a half worth. One where the interface is obviously different. One where all my shh doesn't constantly freeze If there's a "Start fresh" thread on here, I missed it. I'm hoping I can either be told, or directed to where I can get a step by step on upgrading the phone. Unlocking (if necessary), installing, etc.. I have WM6, nothing upgraded at all. I want all the junk off this phone. If I can get a start on what to do, I'm sure I can go from there with configuring.
I dont want to buy a new PDA since Im having a baby, so any help at this point is going to be awesome. Thanks!

you have some reading and searching to do regarding the backing up of texts and all that stuff...it can be done and the answers are somewhere on this forum. you just need to use search to find it.
as far as starting over...you sound new to this so until you read all the stickies at the top of this forum...id go with option 2
FIRST THINGS FIRST. SINCE APPARENTLY YOU MISSED EVERY POST (ALL THE ONES LABELED STICKY) ON THE FIRST PAGE. READ THIS BEFORE GOING FURTHER SO YOU DONT HURT YOUR PHONE OR YOURSELF.
option 1. - Upgrade the rom to one of the 6.1 versions. you can find them with detailed instructions in the stickies. these roms are flat out better than the windows mobile 5 or 6 that you are most likely running. but please read about them and their installation before attempting the upgrade. also read ALL of the stickies to avoid us ganging up on you and and beating you like a hobo for asking "Why am I getting Error: 270".
option 2. - just hit the clear storage button (start > accesories > clear storage) and it will wipe out anything you have saved or installed to the phone and it will be just like when you took it out of the box. this will get rid of your memory issue.
as far as low memory....do you have a ton of stuff installed? did you save every text over the last year and a half?

Rickwyatts version of Kavanas 6.1 ROM
Here is for when you want to come on here and post "ERROR 270! HELP!!!"
Then when you get past that you will come on here and go "MY KEYBOARD IS ALL MESSED UP". for that you are gonna wanna click here --> Keyboard Fix
Once you get passed there... you will definitely come back to say "hey guys! great rom! but i cant send a text, mms or get to the net! zomg my life suck!!!!" click here when that happens and read what it says in green.
i cant belive i just took away all your fun in searching...you musta caught me on a good night...

between the time of your first post and second post you could have found all those stickies and had the phone upgraded....did you really try hard to find the answers? c'mon you can tell me...im not gonna get mad..i already gave the answers to ya.
btw...im not trying to belittle you..think of it as a hazing. a lot of people have put work into making that Excalibur Wiki and the mods have done a great job of making the most common issues STICKIES. when people come on after joining a day ago and have 2 post to their name after owning the phone for a year and a half....then ask many things, all of which have been answered many many dozens of times... it just annoys me. mods spend time to make the stickies of the important things...and people like you dont even bother looking. you spent 2 hours waiting for someone to guide you...when you could have read everything in that time...anyways..im not bashing...just sayin in the future, do some reading or use the search button that i linked above before making a new post like this and looking (to the normal lurkers) silly. anyways. goodluck

I sorta kinda messed up big time. Please help me. I grabbed the NV items from my old Droid Incredible and then flashed them over to my Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch and now it gives me NO SIGNAL. Guys please I am BEGGING YOU ON MY KNEES, please someone go into CDMA Workshop 2.7 and save your NV items and PLEASE PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE let me use them to flash my phone again because I am in desperate need to get it back up and working. I have tried to flash the NV items from whiterabbit.org and have tried multiple times to flash over PRL's and every time I do it all the PRL version says is "default" PLEASE guys, someone let me use their NV items to fix my phone.

Please, if you're going to try to help people, great, help them. But the negative comments just to make sometime feel bad are unneeded and uncalled for. That's the exact opposite of what I did. He can handle a little batter it wasn't like I insulted him. He messed up. When someone messes up you can call them out on it. That's just life. Especially compared to what I've seen on these forums when it comes to helping less experience people. If anything, I was being extremely kind :/

GUYS GUYS!! I dont mean to sound rude, but honestly I dont care if someone is rude to me or not (and in my opinion the guy wasn't rude he was just a realist and giving me advice to never do it again) as long as they are helpful in the matter in which I am seeking help. This topic went overboard, all I really needed was the NV items or radio things for the SPH-D710 aka Epic 4G Touch. Is there anyone out there willing to help me please?

***HUGE EDIT*** I fixed it myself. Downlaoded DFS Tools, dialed ##8778#, set it to CP, connected to DFS, sent SPC, clicked NV, then the server tab on the far right, found my model, clicked it, then write to phone, and then reset at the top right corner. Phone got its NV items back and I can go about my life. Still CANT get 3G no matter what. The 3G symbol is there but it lags out and never connects when i try to go to at least google.com

Reflash your current rom, multiboot to el29, update prl and profile.

Like I said, I reflashed the NV items through DFS and it's fixed now and I'm running CM10.1 with working data and call and text.
XDA say this n that but once i followed your simple guide to destroying my phone it just reboots and reboots and reboots all the time should i smash it now ???????
i am trying odin mode to try to get a usedable phone but alas i fear its ruined now and just needs smashing i would like some help but also fear its dead forever

You should read the 'Disclaimers' with everything.. no need to blurt out towards the developers... Galaxy Y has been such an old phone, no developer supports it anymore.. also, you dont just have to RUN Odin mode... Read the Guide and follow it properly instead of calling names to the various developers...

Stop whining and start searching the cause and the solution for this situation. If you had spent some time to read, you would have not reached this point.
