GPS/SatNav recommendations -which one? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

I got TomTom bundled with the Athena and Cruise, no such luck with the TP2. Any suggestions or recommendations about which package to go for for TP2, bearing in mind the wide screen etc.
All suggestions welcome

i have tried 3 sat navs over the years. obvious one is tomtom, i use copilot 7 and have no probs. i have read and heard great reports of mcguider? might want to check the spelling. very popular is garmin xt but word of warning.... youll have to hot swap your sd card and that is no fun. workarounds available but not worth messing around with it.
i went for copilot live 7 because i found a cheap one on ebay and no need to hot swap. its very clear and works with most devices.
I think that should be a good short list. no doubt others will champion other brands.

I use TomTom, have no problems with it at all, works 100%

Yes indeed, but it's the 480 X 800 screen that might present an issue

I use tomtom7, but for some reason on my kaiser and rhodium it runs SO SLOWLY.
I only get about 0.75 frames per second update time, which frankly is terrible compared to the 3-5fps that you would see on a standalone tomtom unit.

I use 7.915, the latest version which runs flawlessly.

As mentioned ... I have CPL6 and it works fine on the TP2 taking up the whole of the WVGA screen except the initial splash and performs well.
Paul.

igo8 (latest version) works on mine just fine. Same version I was using on the HD

iGo 8
I cant get iGo 8 to work to save my life!, I've installed and re-installed countless times now and Iget the same issue, it installs fine but wont start the application, even to give me the license agreement page.
it just bombs out and it's really cramping my phone at the moment... any ideas?

Hi there,
I might be really stupid but where in the settings is the option to switch off Assisted GPS?
I'm surprised that it doesnt work with A-GPS as the Kaiser had no issues at all.
Thanks for your help

Garmin Mobile XT / Garmin Online / Panoramio Photos Issue

I've been testing Garmin Mobile XT on my HTC Touch HD for a few days now. Works great: responsive and looks beautiful on the large screen. I've tested ever available feature including the Garmin Online options: everything works with one exception: Panoramio Photos. Whenever this feature is selected, I get the following error message:

GMXT terminates with this message.
Is anyone else seeing this?

I've found that the Panoramio Photos feature works in landscape mode only. I have Gyrator installed and when I rotate the HD I can use this feature. Once I rotate back to portrait I get the error message.
Garmin Mobile XT - Panoramio error!!!
I have the same issue with you guys.
Clicking on panoramio on HTC HD says error and the application closes.
The start menu bar also gets disabled.
When i use the latest version for my w960i no problem at all.
Could anybody help us with that?
DEVELOPERS HELP !!!!
I get the same error too so I just rotated to landscape and it worked. That is weird.
I had a lengthy e-mail exchange with Garmin technical support concerning this issue when I first noticed it. Thanks to XDA I was able to confirm that other's had the same issue and that it didn't occur when the HD was in landscape mode.
Unfortunately I got the impression Garmin wasn't convinced that there was an issue. (I find when dealing with software support organizations, 99% of the effort is convincing them there's an issue in the first place. I've encounter this attitude so often with Garmin that I've requested to communicate with the developers directly. )
I request that anyone encountering this issue send an e-mail directly to Garmin Technical Support - strength in numbers...
Where did u guys get Garmin from? I've been looking but not found it yet lol
I've got Problem when I use theme changed by TF3D. It's make Garmins not work problem is program cant detect Satellite!! but if i hard reset Garmin work. what will i do for solve this problem i want to use theme....
Yup I've got the same problem
I've contacted Garmin too, and got a response about what Panoramio is and how to start it, sent a response to that.
Quite sad, I've been using Garmin products for a long time now, their products are really well built and I've not had to use support much but when I did I used to get really good responses.
I guess like any company that becomes big they start skimping on customer support.

Just got a message that they don't get when testing on the Touch HD, perhaps it is tied to a particular ROM, what roms do you guys have?

Garmin mobile xt
Hi, I'm new in here because right now i bought the HTC touch HD , I install Garmin mobile xt on my HTC and think that I have a problem because when it is in use its look at about 3-5 seconds in delay and the speed looks about 5-6 km/h in less as well, the car doesn't move live with me, i had like i still pict of the car and after 3-5 seconds update the route again I dont know how can i exactly explain. 1fps. The alert voices left turn right turn etc. are fine.
Can someone help me to resolve this problem,? please..
Has a newer version come out yet? I get this message, but with the HTC HD2. Using same landscape program to resolve the problem when NOT vertical. Still would rather have a permanent solution though.

gpsdash2 - anyone tried?

Considering buying touch hd, but being able to use gpsdash2 is reasonably important for me. Does it work? If yes, does it work at full resolution? My present pda is a mio a701 and I use gpsdash2 with 1:25.000 maps for registrering botanical locations. Your feedback will be appreciated.

Ok, so nobody seems to know gpsdash2. Is there anybody out there who would be so fantastically kind as to download and install the program and give me some feedback (I know it is a lot to ask)?
Gpsdash2 can be found here:
http://wimobi.com/gpsdash/overview.ppc2.php
I bought this software what seems years ago for my HTC smartphone (qtek 8310). At that time, it was way ahead of its time. Then, after one update, the developer went offline and never reappeared ever since.
At the moment, I am using Oziexplorer which does the job even better and is supported. Obviously, I now have a ppc (touch HD) and no longer a smartphone.
Conclusion: stay clear of Gpsdash2. It's dead.
Thank you for answering. You are right, of course, gpsdash2 has not been developed for some time. However, I would still like to know how it performs on touch hd, as it it is the program I am used to.
I had a look at Oziexplorer and that will be my alternative, if I cannot use gpsdash2. Does Oziexplorer utilies the full resolution of touch hd?
Doesnt boot on mine sry

I am not sure. It does occupy the full size of the display but the templates you call upon are not 800x480. I don't think it makes a difference as you don't need this sort of resolution with oziexplorer. The maps are actually processed by the software in multiple resolutions, which allows to have crystal clear displays as you zoom in and out. Seing is believing: test it and you'll forget about gpsdash2.
Hope that helps.
ive just tried this on dutty 3.3 XT rom and i get FRamework error? sayin to reinstall.
any ideas why this wont work?
Let's have a look at
HTML:
http://www.vitotechnology.com/en/products/smartnavigator.html
VITO SmartNavigator works on Blackstone without problems and looks better than gpsdash2.
Problem solved
Thank you all for your replies. Did not get any real feedback on the functionality of gpsdash2, but you gave me some alternatives. Went ahead and bought the touch hd anyway (what an instrument!!!), and after trying both gpsdash2, your suggestions and a couple of other gpsprograms, I came to the following conclusions:
1. Gpsdash2 works to a certain degree if you change screen resolution to vga before installing and before using. However, I am not able to access all menus, so that dosen´t really work for me.
2. Tried Oziexplorer and it is obviosly a wonderfull program. For my needs it is overkill (I don´t need all those functions) and it costs real money. I´ll will certainly keep it in mind should my needs change.
3. Had a look at Vito Smartnavigator, and it would probably have done the job. However, it worries me that the program dosen´t figure on Vito homepage and I had to download from some random site. So what about development and even more important, where to buy a license?
4. Tried some freeware programs and ended up with Terracrosser, http://terracrosser.com, and it does excatly what I need and no more. I have to use sattelite photos instead of 1:25.000 maps, but the program downloads and saves them automatically from google with precise geographical calibration, and I can get the equivalent of 1:6.000 maps if I need it. So a lot less work for me.
Again, thank you all for your contributions.
mikdyb
Terracrosser
I have been using terracrosser and it is wonderful. Best thing is, it is a freeware and I can download goolge maps or yahoo maps (both map and satellite images). It is really easy and I can download selected region. I have maps of places I visit frequently and I add new maps if I am visiting new places. It also works with gps and also gives speed.
The user interface is not so touch screen user friendly when it comes to scrolling the maps. But not a big problem as map scrolling is seldom needed when you have gps. Also the program is under development so lot of new features are being added.

TomTom - What Version??

Hi..
I have tried to find the answer here at XDA, but i'm still confused...
Which TomTom version is the right one for the Black Stone??
Is the VGA or the QVGA for the Black Stone??
"Huhh, there are noe stupid questions, only stupid answers" ;-)
Stupid Answer: try looking at the 'TomTom on HD' topic on here
Thnx, but i have checked out that post. And i have figured out that the VGA-version should run on the HD.... BUT, when i installed it, the HD nagged about some Low Memory issue.... Therefore this stupid question....

That's odd, because I use tomtom v. 7.450 (9028) and works fine. But personally, forget silly tomtom and try IGO8. Believe me, you'll see the BIG difference.
IGO8 was born for blackstone, except of the sys.txt, but this is only small inconvenience from the beginning .
I have nstalled version TT_Nav_7.450.9028_repack3-qvga-black, previously working on Kaiser. On blackstone working fine

Hi
What version would work?
I tried IGO_8_v8.3.2.79297.
I was able to select lanq. and voices, but IGO stopped when trying to load the usual "Warning bla bla" (you know this warning any GPS need to show you the first time you use it).
Tried to reboot a few times. Same just made my HD veeeeeery slow so I had to restore it!
Do I need to do something with the sys.txt?
Mittaa
Tt 7.450.9028
7.450.9028 works perfectly (just with small fonts and POI icons).
I still have the issue of GPS dropping signal, but this is seems to be not related to the application used
I am using 7.918.9193 QVGA.cab with map UK v845.2667 on my HD and it runs VERY fast (make sure you are not showing too many POI's you dont need). I have not modified any settings or files for it to work and it displays perfectly and runs fine.
I have it installed to the mem card and I have never had any troubles about low memory.
As for IGo, I am using 8.3.2.97313 and its fast and beautiful, with alot more features than TomTom but I only really use it for the tracking feature and to re trace your tracked route. I used it (well it was MioMap then) to go from one side of Bulgeria to the other via taxi (with tracker on) and then hired a car for the trip back and re traced the route.
The sys.txt was a nightmare to get working but after lots of playing (refused to read people instructions, silly me) I got it working at full RES.
Both amazing but I still use TomTom more

Has anyone tried the Navagon GPS yet.
I have a stand alone Navagon and I love it. It has lane assist and many other features that Garamon and TomTom are just now introducing on their units. Navagon had it 2 years ago. I've looked at it on their website and it seems to have all the features as the standalone unit.
I was wondering if anyone had tried it to see if there were any lag or other problems. If not then I'll probably get it so when I fly somewhere I won't have to bring my standalone.
They have demo versions for other countries but not the USA.

have sporty pal .. good but the maps and the gps is a bit iffy.. but it's very good for what it does.. and you can do walking etc. but i will try other apps listed here .
sporty pal is good. As long as u dont let ur phone lock or turnoff it work ok. Really good data presentation!
iv found memory map which uses ordnance survey maps to be excellent for this type of thing.
thanks guys i had tried and just come up with junk i think these will work, will have a play with a few and see what i perfer, thanks again SpZero
GPSVP ppc
by far the best of the lot IMHO... although not the prettiest, ad takes some playing with to get the best out of it but it's open source!
--
I've just used it to do a 372km/2 day ride to the HPV world champs in tilburg and back home again.. worked perfectly for me.
it'll read GPX files in (so plot them out in something like Bikely.com)
then use the pc version (or the PPC version) of gpsvp to download all the map tiles from google/live.com or openstreetmap..
It'll also handle Garmin compatible maps, so you can find openstreetmaps in that format as well..
when you've got all the raster maps you need (at all the zoom levels you need) transfer the folder to the ppc and setup the app..
Obviously if you've got data access while out you can download maps on the fly so to speak.. But I didn't while roaming.

I couldn't agree more. I use Memory-Map (http://www.memory-map.co.uk) for cycling and walking with my HD and it's just brilliant. Large maps with great detail on the big screen. You'd need to carry at least 1-2 spare batteries though to last you through a full day...
The software logs your track to upload to your computer and then convert for Google Earth to share with the rest of the world.
A great website for UK cycling routes ready to use is: http://www.gps-routes.co.uk
Have fun, Alex.
+1 for Memory-Map, have used it in the UK with 50k and 25k series maps on HD.
Dont forget the one and only "GPSCycleComputer". Very good program, and its free!

Now I'm using more applications, but Sportypal and RunGPS for me are the one's that you must try, although rungps is not free. There is a trial version that you can try, after that you must enter validation code. Sportypal is completely free, and I enjoy playing with it. For cycling is good and it's pretty accurate. Couple of days ago I installed the 1.0.5 version and the problem with locking or going into stand by mode is fixed. Here is my workout info so you can see what it has to offer.
