New User of the Touch pro II - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hey evryone
After a long search for a new mobile phone, and getting rid of my sony ericson cybershot i have chosen the new HTC touch pro II
The phone just looks amazing and i cant wait to get started with it.
Since im a total nub in the smartphones i have registered myself here in the hope to learn as much as fast as possible.
Since im unfamiliar with the software vocab like rom etc i was wondering if there exist any guide on this site that explains all the technical info.
Furthermore something i forgot to mention while ordering if the phone is sim- lock free, i think i read somewere it standard comes sim free, but maybe some1 can confirm this to me.
thx

hi welcome to the forum mate and don't worry you be fine. check out the tweaks thread by beast for some of the goodies already available for this device. check in HTC Blackstone/Touch HD forum for a comprehensive guide on the whole rom thing! basically the rom is the image file on your phone like a pc running windows 7. in phone case your rom is wm6.1. once hard spl is released there will be various people producing custom roms for your device which is in effect like upgrading from XP to Vista to Windows 7. there will be roms on offer from wm6.1(official) and wm6.5(currently beta) so you can customise your phone. currently we are waiting hardspl which is work in progress. all the tools you will need to flash your phone will also be available soon.
now at simlock issue. most people are reporting that tp2 come sim unlock from vodafone but the isue is that the phone will contain vodafone customisation and their rom. if you buy a debranded phone from an online stockist or from MPD it come unlocked and with generic software. this means that will be compatible with any network and phone will have HTC software on it. this means that you will be able to benefit from upgrades direct from HTC and not wait for the likes of vodafone to possibly release it. you will find that most software upgrades will be made readily available by HTC but the network providers seem to hold us to ransom.

Thanks for the fast reply
As for the branded story, i did order my phone from a provider called KPN, its dutch and it is part of a extension on my mobile phone subcription which was due. Im pretty sure it will come branded, but is there any way to find out if its branded or not by looking at the mobile and its software itself?
As for unbranding it, i already read that, when the hard spl is released, there should be no problem getting rid of the CID. Therefore the branded/ sim part can be taken care off.
the only thing im worried about, since im new to this, is the risk of ruining a prefectly good mobile phone, hehe. Is the risk high? However i have already seen proffesional websites advertising payed sim unlock/ something to do with a EMEI code which will returned with an unlock code upon payment.
Futhermore i was looking for the following answer about data usage. Since i travel allot within the EU my data usage abroad ( within eu) will form a cost on top of my monthly subscription fee. Are there programs that monitor your data usage? I just read that the price for 1 MB from july 1 in holland under KPN will go down from 7,95 to 2,95 <-- this is when you have a internet subcsription ( without 3,95).
I would like to avoid high unexpected phone bills, and i have the feeling that with the touch pro II, i want to go more online haha.
so for example watching a youtube movie or visiting websites (news items)
how much does this normally translate in data usage?
thanks in advance

couldn't say as i got unlimited data plan in uk and when i travel i use one of them cheap sims that give low cost everything. watching a youtube will defo increase data usage thus cost alot. if your phone is branded it will have your service provider marks stamped all ovber phone. if it is not it will be pure HTC. you will know straight away so don't worry. yep IMEI unlocking can be done remotely using data cable and connecting to unlock server or via order form thru site. for the latter you send your phone details including IMEI number which they send to HTC to get generate your unlock code which you receive via email. you will know when you receive phone whats what and then take any steps you need to!

News on T-Mobile MDA III (UK) Rom Update

rI am told by a reliable and senior source within T-Mobile UK that they are shortly releasing a further ROM Upgrade. Thank heavens for that
And before everyone says that they have already upgraded etc.. this is of specific importance to:
1 Those who don't feel comfortable puting a different ROM on; or
2 Those like me who use Blackberry which won't work with any radio other than 1.0 and 1.6 (unofficial confimation).
Anyway watch this space because I am told end of June will be
the date. Please also pass on this news through the other fora as a lot of users are posting wanting to know about T-Mobile MDA III updates.
Thanks
J
Thanks for that info - I wait in anticipation.
Do you know any details of what issues the new ROM will address? Does it have WMP10?
MDA Unlocked ?
Jiggy
I notice your signature mentions Tmobile MDA III Unlocked.
Havin just got one yesterday I want to look to doing bloody everything on it.
Firstly, use it a a phone.
2nd - Sync it with my Mailbox on Our Exchange 2003 server which is fully accessible from the Internet. - I' think i understand that to access this server, i need to use GPRS (and also seen how expensive it is - 7.50perMb).
But what/why do i see all this unlocking terminology on these boards.
I assume there are benefits ? if so could you tell me what.
Thanks in advance.
David.
The "Unlocked" simply refers to the phone being either locked to a single provider (E.g. TMobile etc) or able to accept SIM cards from any telecoms provider. If you put a different telecom providers SIM card in your phone it either works or displays a locked message with a request to put an unlock code in.
A great number of supplied Blue Angels (And other XDA type devices) are being shipped locked to the provider who supplies it. For people who are travelling abroad and use foreign SIM cards or people who simply want to swap SIM card for a different provider are stopped from doing so.
This I feel is a very annoying situation as most providers lock you into a 1 year contract if the phone is subsidised and then refuse to provide an unlock code for that year. This is unacceptable and is simply a money generating exercise in these situations (Providers will tell you it is to stop people purchasing the phone and then disappearing with it without paying but they can block the IMEI number of the phone to stop this anyway!)
Hopefully that answers your question and allowed me to have a little rant!
Jiggy
Thanks. Totally agree with your comments.
David.
MDA III Updates/Unlocked
As regards the post quering my device being unlocked - T-Mobile UK will unlock one of its devices for £15 after 1 month's use. They did not make me wait for 12 months (the term of my contract). I happily paid this, as it is a relatively modest amount, compared to buying out the contract . They are one of the cellcos in the UK who will do this.
On the updates thread I will keep everyone updated. My contact as much as admitted that they view this site as a helpful way of getting the updates to end users. So unofficial Kudos, as always, to xda-developers

So he has worked out were he can download the cabs to install in the T-mobile Ext Rom, think he will be able to download a radio version that is newer?
I can also confirm this as the nice man at t-mobile who assisted me with enabling blackberry last friday told me that there is a patch coming soon., and that we should be informed by service message
MdA III user
LOL and Bump I like your thinking MDA III User . Good to hear from you haven't spoken in ages. You never know they may just about have taken the hint.
I am one of those high maintenance customers but I spend a fair amount so they humour me!!
J
Hi,
does anyone know what level the update will go to as I am unsure whether to wait for it or just go ahead and upgrade to 1.40 now cos I really cant be bothered to do it twice if the tmobile one is going to be better somehow :?
Any help would be appreciated
i spoek to t mobile last week while sorting out my mda 3 and they said that they thought the update would be about in september. She said that they were currently doing testing on it before the release.
however, she promised me that when available it woud be published here!

Currently they have the rom i am running.
Keep your eyes peeled for it!
Thanks for the link I have updatred wiki
Any more news on this subject??
T-Mobile have gone silent
My contact at T-Mobile has gone silent on me. Despite voice mails and emails requesting an update on a) what is in and b) release date of an update. Never a good sign :?
Can all T-Mobile customers start bugging them with me as this is the only way to raise the priority of this issue.
We still do not have WMP10 or an updated radio stack (you cannnot use BB connect with anything other than 1.0). Although with the no sound problem on certain ROMs perhaps we should be thankful!
Stength and safety in numbers on this one
I've been checking this link weekly since this thread began with no joy. Now even the link no longer works! I gues this won't be happening then!
it works
you should go on connect and then mda3 then rom upgrade and download it

02 XDA Exec in the UK

...does anyone know if and when 02 are going to release a new ROM for the Exec?
I've had mine running now for a while with the Blackberry Connect software and it's not what you call stable. The service stops for no reason, or hangs or simply wont connect, I have to reset frequently.
I used an 02 Mini-S for a while and that was rock solid... shame the Exec isn't.
Thats the million dollar question.
Various posts about this with no answer.
I emailed O2 a week or 2 ago asking the very same thing. I did get an answer which basically said they don't know with no plans. O2 Cust service said they usually know a few months in advance but haven't heard anything.
How long is a peice of string????

...our company got them just as they'd released the Blackberry Connect update, got that hot off the press straight from 02.
It's not such a bad piece of kit, the only wobbles I have are with the BB functionality and the phone... but then again as I said previously, the Mini-S was faultless...

Guess your company should of pressured O2 into confirm/agreeing upgrade commitment contract etc...
Sorry, I wished O2 were better ie they release some great phones/PDA devices but still think of them as 12 month contract phones. Don't see the big picture.
Company I work for (one of the big banks in the UK) where trialing the XDA EXEC but couldn't really get what they wanted from O2.
Shame as all IT guys love the machine - just software was a bit pants.

...feel enclined to agree... it would have been useful to be able to browse the web on them, but they tell us as we're on a Blackberry tariff Internet access is unavailable... tried several technical work arounds to no avail.
Odd really, previously we had some T-Mobile MDAIII's with Blackberry functionality and we could browse the web with them quite well.
We were hoping for some kind of Terminal Services remote control of our services over a VPN of some description with the Exec..but the lack of Internet access on them put a stop to that.
I don't think, this is a problem specifically with the O2 company. I beleive the entire HTC Universal device provider whether O2, IMate, TMobile, QTEK, etc... HAS NO PLANS OF RELEASING ANY ROM UPDATE FROM NOW ON. Why? To them, our device is a thing of the past. They are concentrating more on their current NEW or UPCOMING devices.

We decided to scrap the BlackBerries in favour of Mini S and Execs. That effectively brings in Exchange Push E-mail synchronisation, Phone Service and Internet access as well... not to say you can install GPS Sat Nav on them and other good things.
Granted, I had to understand how to make a Certificate Based Authentication to comply to the Corporate Policy, and having strong password is a real pain in the proverbial -- but still it beats all devices.
My only grudge against Exec is not so much free RAM; as a result Navigon MN|5 requires a reboot beforehand if you're going somewhere far - to prevent nasty surprises during the trip (esp. considering the goddam strong password which you can't enter with your finger...)

... Which is really SHAME, because there are so far NO "New" or "Upcoming" Phone Edition devices with VGA screen... Universal is one of a kind. Granted there are VGA devices with GPS - but no phone; or nice phones with GPS - but only QVGA or even 240*240 screen.
We've paid shedload of money and... once again guys, tough, go buy another one. ARRRRGHHH!!!!
Or shall we?
Screw this.
I guess during the Christmas holidays I'll just go and try one of the ROMs that can be found here - got nothing to lose and all to gain, and a good experience of flashing ROMs on previous XDA II Himalaya.
If these hold Push E-mail updates, screw the O2 updates altogether.

These phones are not supposed to be unlocked us they run the service from BT and they expect to use their services... and not pop up your sim from other providers..us this phone is practcly subsidised...
good luck
many thanks sir so how much do you pay for unlock is there is no other unlocking solution/??
well in the ebay uk they sell they sell the service for 30 pounds but i went to ebay.com not ebay.co.uk and there was a seller selling it for 19 dollars.. which is much much more cheaper...
Here is the auction....
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350046773639
i hope i could help...
I did the same as you and got the phone from BT - £5 a month for 18 months, bargain!
But it did take quite a bit of work to get it sorted, the BT software is erm, crap, to be polite. It slows the hell out of the machine and eats battery power.
First I unlocked the SIM as above using a US seller on ebay, which cost me £8. It was then app unlocked and flashed with the brilliant Kavana 080408, after that I didn't need to add anything else.
well i agree BT rom is a crab it needed 2 miniutes to boot and was very slow. I upgraded to kavanas rom for a while but i had stability problems with Jaggr i had to downgrade to the unbranded version. I dont know why... in kavanas rom the lower butto has been selected for celectask.exe which was alway unresponsive for me,,, no matter how many times i flashed it... even with rikkeys roms..... while in the unbranded windows mobile six is dedicated in creatng new mail... which works nicely

A Qwest/Sprint CDMA Question.

I have been looking for a while but found no difinitive answer for this question which makes me think it would be tough, but here goes. My friend had Qwest cellular service in Minnesota and had an HTC PPC 6800 with them. At the time that he had this, Qwest's service was actually rebundled Sprint, but with a Qwest badged phone. While he and his family's business had an account through them they were forced to go to Verizon for their carrier and in turn he recieved the Verizon version of his phone, the VX6800 I believe. After he had switched providers with Qwest he had his old 6800 still laying around and gave it to me as I had done some work for him and his family's business developing a VPN and remote server management tools and started to develop a Linux PBX for them. My questions are this:
1. Is it possible to use this phone with my Sprint/Nextel service?
2. What are the steps I need to take to make this possible if I can indeed use this.
I understand about flashing ROMS and whatnot, but, do I need to do anything first to the phone to "unlock" it to work with Sprint and then load custom Firmware? Or can I just use something like DCD's Titan Kitchen to make this phone work with it?
My part time job is working at a Radioshack and I talked to my Sprint rep about swapping the ESN on my account from my old Nextel phone I have to this 6800 and she said it should be no problem if the phone could be unlocked. I really hope there is a way I could get this to work as I would hate to see a perfectly good smartphone go to almost total waste since a company decided to change their contract and make all their users switch to a new phone company. I know it could still be used to some things but I could just buy a smaller PDA and carry my phone with as well but that is not what the whole smartphone movement was about now was it? Thank you very much for listening and thank you in advance for any help that you might be able to provide.

Unlocking Desire for use abroad...

I know this has probably been covered elsewhere, but my (admittedly very brief) search for this in the forum has come up dry.
I'm going on holiday later in the week, and I'm going to hopefully be getting a PAYG sim card so I can use my phone abroad (for web browsing).
I have a feeling though that my phone might need to be unlocked so I can use another carriers sim. It's a TMobile Desire. I'm going to Bali - are there any other issues I need to consider before I go?
Any ideas?
Ok - I've googled this a bit now as well - so it looks like I need to buy a code to unlock it?
No way of doing this by yourself to save a few quid?
If this is the only way, a reliable unlcok code provider would be really useful - there appears to be a few online, but there also seems to be plenty of stories from people who have ordered codes only for them not to work, and or codes not to be supplied by the seller...
I unlocked my T-Mobile Desire last week via HTCSimUnlock.com and my code came within 10 minutes.
Regards,
Dave
