Porting HTC Click Rom - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

Hello,
I am trying to port HTC Click Rom to my Hero
Done an update.zip of the system and flashed my device. I just:
- commented out QVGA staff in build.prop:
Code:
# View configuration for QVGA
#view.fading_edge_length = 8
#view.touch_slop = 15
#view.minimum_fling_velocity = 25
#view.scroll_friction = 0.008
- changed ro.sf.lcd_density from 120 to 160
i kept my stock kernel (boot.img) and logcat gives me the output attached.
I then extracted the Htc Click boot.img and changed default.prop to
Code:
#
# ADDITIONAL_DEFAULT_PROPERTIES
#
ro.secure=0
ro.allow.mock.location=0
ro.debuggable=1
persist.service.adb.enable=1
I rebuilt the boot.img and flashed it: nothing in logcat
Don't know what to do now, any help appreciated.
Regards

so what happened next!, i made a port booted an everyhting but the tattoo rom is trash!
where do you stand now, did it boot for you or anything?

Well still at the same point. Can't run the Click rom. Don't know what to do now. I am learning hard... What have I miss ?

are there some (good) tutorials about on the internet? where did you guys learn that?

Have you replaced the kernel in the boot.img of the tattoo with the Hero Kernel?

Thanks a lot! It works!
Splash screens are in QVGA and I can't enter pin code (no accces to 0 and "ok" key) but it runs
Does it worth building a donut ROM based on Click ? I suppose I must deodex all hero stock app and replace Clcik apps with does? Is it how I should proceed?
Regards.

In fact I "just" want to make a custom hero donut rom to have global search and pptp VPN witch I really need for work.

Hi Gecka, please can you post the dump files (the apps apk)from the htc tatoo rom?
I try to follow your tutorial but Im really a noob in this thing of android.
I really want to use the files to make a better skin for QVGA devices.
PS: If you can post too the fmradio apk I really apreciate.

how are you getting around the problem that there are no android 1.6 libraries for the hero? Telephony shouldn't work, camera won't work, I don't even know that screen will work.
---edit---
Oh, the screen is indeed working?
change the DPI back down to 120 so you can use it. It will suck, I know, because our screens are 160 dpi, but at least all will work as intended.

Well it runs with 160dpi for me.... Does putting it to 120dpi solves the problem that part of the PIN1 keyboard is hidden ?

It's in two parts: the kernel and the system. I wonder why you'll want as it is far from being usable. If it is for cooking a donut ( ), you should have a look at the ADP1.6 thread with has more change to being fully functional.

I do not work on it anymore as for now I am trying to get a custom 2.6.29 kernel.

I got it booted and all, but that is as far as I get, Rosie won't launch and the homescreen freezes, probably because they have different screen hardware, the tattoo has a capacitive screen whilst the hero has a resistive screen. The only work that can be done is by merging a hero rom and with bits of the tattoo's donut parts...

so is the kernel you posted the hero kernel to allow it to boot, or the tattoo default one? thanks

What?"!? I have no doubt the screens are different, but the Hero has a capacitive screen, no question.

No it is resistive and this is not a problem for android to run. Just forget about that port, hardware is too far away from our heroes. Just forget it.

Yeah, thats probably the best gecka until there is a kernel source release

http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_hero-2861.php
Looking at google cache, the HTC page had a reference to it being capacitive too.

Can't be as resistive screens doesn't support multitouch. And this, the hero does - no doubt. Therefore it's definitely a capacitive screen ;-)

Magic/ION/Google ROM on the Hero!

Hi Guys!
I have been searching for days if someone has managed to install a clean google rom on his HTC Hero. I can only find people running rooted Hero Roms.
The point is, i want to get rid of all the HTC Apps. I've managed to delete a lot of the stock applications, and it improved the speed a lot!
If i install any other "Magic based rom" the phone will hang on the HTC boot screen.
If i push original google apps like "contacts.apk/.odex" to the phone, they won't run.
Can someone port the original Magic/ION rom to the Hero please? I know a lot of people want to run a "clean android" rom on the hero.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
My phone is rooted now with Modaco / CyanogenMod v1.4 + JF.

I cannot see the point why someone would want that . No offense , i mean all the HTC customisation and Rosie was the whole point in buying this device instead of the HTC Magic( which has the exact same specifications and a way lot cheaper)

To be honest, i don't really know why i bought the hero. I didn't know much about android at the time i bought one. Now i know better, but anyway, that's not what i want to discuss..
The magic can almost run any rom, why can't the hero run any rom i want?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please people, i don't want to be a jerk, but don't come up with questions like "Why did you buy a hero then?" ..

I'm on the same boat. When I bought my hero I hadn't really seen any working Android phone, either stock or HTC. Now that I have seen both I think that the stock apps and interface are somehow saner than HTC's, and what can I say? I'd prefer to use them.
Why don't you run the Rosie remover. It will get you part of the way to where you want to go
Indeed! but I also prefer the stock browser, the stock music player, the stock calendar, the stock contact list and dialer... and so on. They look less flashy but handier to my taste.
I totally agree with, frandavid100. I would also love to have a vanilla android rom on my Hero.
Actually, why do magic roms not work with the hero? What kind of modification would you have to do for them to work?

I think that the hero rom is not like the win rom. i mean all the htc customisations superimposed on the windows ones. There, all we had to do was just to remove the htc ones and we automatically got the windows ones.
I guess android's different. we have to remove all the htc customisations and add android's ones. Problem is hero never had the android's applications. what could be done is take a magic rom, remove all the applications and try to port them to the hero.
Problems would definetely arise cause the 2 phones are not 100% identical. some software work on the magic but not on hero bla bla bla.
I know some stock apps do work with the hero. I have been able to use the stock calendar and browser in my hero by replacing the apk and odex files, however replacing the contacts app makes it hang.
We could try to make a list of what apps can be replaced and how, or maybe even make update.zip files specific for that, similar to modaco's rosie remover. How difficult would that be?

I think that you'll probably find that the difference here is that chefs with a Magic or G1 actively want to "upgrade" to the latest and greatest ROMs. So, when presented with a Hero ROM, they will make the effort to back port it to the hardware they have.
The situation with the Hero is a little different. Here we already have the "latest and greatest", so there is probably very little motivation for a chef to port what is essentially an earlier ROM to the Hero. What you need to find is a chef who has a Hero, who either wants to run stock android, or is interesting in the intellectual challenge!
So, it's not really the case that "the magic can almost run any rom" - it's that their are chefs with Magics who are building these ROMs.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks guys!
I knew i wasn't the only one who wanted a clean vanilla android rom on the hero. Like frandavid100 said before, till there's another "magic rom" or something, we could make a list of apps working on hero.
I've had the same thing with the Contacts.app. This makes the phone freeze, and after removing the battery it constantly reboots.
If we all together manage to make a list of apps, i can create an update.zip which does all the work.

Let's do a test. I know you can replace HTC's browser with Android's. I'm attaching the files for both, can you create an update.zip that removes the HTC files from /system/apps, and pushes the stock ones?
EDIT: failed to upload the files to the forum. You can get them here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TVL3Y8UE

I will do that tomorrow ok? I live in The Netherlands and its 09.35pm and i'm watching a movie
BTW: I also have a stock Magic/ION image. I can extract the apps from there as well. Tomorrow i'll try some apps.
Thanks for the effort guys!
Just another quick post. Below you'll see a list of apps which i'm going to try tomorrow. Please post request apps if i forget one.
- Contacts (probably doesn't work)
- Phone (unknown - probably same as contacts)
- Browser (probably works)
- Music Player (probably works)
- Messages/sms?
- Camera (unknown)
- Albums (probably no multitouch)
- Camcorder (don't know if this one is available)
- Calender (probably works)
- Calculator (unknown)
- Clock (don't know if this one is available)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BTW; If you guys want the original android lockscreen, just remove HtcLockScreen.apk/odex. After reboot you'll have the original android lockscreen where you have to press "menu" to unlock. Works faster and ofcourse no lag!
Hey, if you come back during the ads... can you point me to that stock rom? I'd like to try some of those too.
I can advance that Browser and Calendar do work (I'm using them right now).

I am sorry.. i'm at my girlfriend and don't have my laptop with me tomorrow i'll post some links to different roms we can work with. But i can assure you they won't work on the hero.
Im also going to try to port the sapphire keyboard to the hero. Don't know if someone already did this, i haven't used google yet.
Actually, the keyboard is one of the few things I like from HTC's customisations I'll give the sapphire one a try tho!

great job
ok, next week i'm in vacation, but when i'm back i'll try it ...
PLS: do you have the "touchscreen bug" on 1.6 ?
(sometimes touch screen is jumping to the left (2-3cm).
this can be tested via "dotty" or "paint", and this happen only if you use the finger and if you press on a position - mostly seen on middle to button)
because if it would work on 1.6, maybe i can use the calibration or touchscreen driver ....

or can you upload the startscript + touchscreen related drivers ?

I dont think you could port libs from donut to froyo(and evenif it could be done, that's beyond my knowledge), also this rom has not been tested on the blackstone yet, you would have to wait for me to release to see how it works, all my releases are tested on a raph110 witch is the device i own.

Sounds like the kbd layout is incorrect. Make sure that's set in your startup.
Can't just 'put' sense on... it's part of the build so you need an image that has sense in it. There's a 2.1 build called 'rosie' that has sense on it, but it's awful.
ah right, which would probably explain why i couldnt find it
My startup looks like this:
set ramsize 0x10000000
set ramaddr 0x10000000
set mtype 1910
set KERNEL zImage
set initrd initrd.gz
set cmdline "lcd.density=210 clock-7x00.a11=500 msmvkeyb_toggle=off gsensor_axis=-1,-2,3 board-htcraphael-navi.wake=0 physkeyboard=raph rel_path=Donut"
boot
What would i need to change? I have an O2 version of the Raph but in the download files there is a Raph and a Raph800. What is the difference between them?
Thanks,
-c
RAPH800 = Sprint RAPH. You can see which RAPH you have by pulling your battery, there will be a line somewhere saying RAPHXXX. If you're on O2 it's probably a RAPH100 or 110.
RAPH120
Been playing around with the ROM and i like it a lot, its amazing how fast it is!
I noticed that sometimes i manage to accidently bring up an overview of the 3 home screens at the bottom, how do i do this? I tried holding the ok centre button but that didnt work.
My brother has a touch pro 2 so will try this ROM out on his device.
The device did not like having the USB cable plugged in, it prompted to mount the SD card but then locked up the notification screen (where you slide down from the top).
WOW!
WOW! Really great Android ROM for RAPH100! Looks nice and works very fast

[ROM][3/1/2011] LiquidM_Villain (v1.1)

Hi at long last release time is upon us. I bring to you the Acer Liquid Metal Rom port, with the joint effort of Me,HomerSP(Team Villain) and with testing and collaboration by TheDeadCpu. Now what can i tell you about the rom, is it fast? of course it is, is the battery life good? hard to tell im always on 2g(At&t) Does it all work? No of course not. now with that said lets get on to what does not work.
You NEED CWM3.0, not the Beta Version of CWM 3.0 that only works on gingerbread, if you have that recovery and you flash my rom it will get stuck in the white htc logo, so please download the CWM recovery with rom manager, or make sure its not the Beta version.

highly doubtful, i don't think it can be done not sure, maybe the independent apk's of the launcher/framework-res can be extracted and made standalone from the main rom, dunno that's something i don't know how to do.

Well, what the original rom did was just take this launcher and made it default

Not trying to be an English teacher here, but I advice you change it. XD

ah well you can try that on gingerbread, but it will most likely not work, and as for the lock screen that im sure has to be ported and modified to make a flashable update.zip( if it indeed is possible again i don't know).

Launcher will work .. kind of. It'll take forever to load, and if you touch the black bar, it'll FC. The 8 icons also won't show up. You'll be able to use the app drawer, as well as swipe left and right, but that's about it. No notification bar. Also, doesn't play well with LCD Density.
Yeessss!!!!

Thanks to all involved this is clearly the best or one of the best Rom out can't wait
Id be willing to help out and test the rom as you port it.
I was going to try and port this myself, but, have no knowledge of doing it, so most of my time would've been on just reading and learning first, haha.
Let me know, id be interesting in helping out.

[ROM][CM10] Ultimate Jelly

Some of you requested a working CM10, so i'll provide some up-to-date test builds.
Downloadlink: http://www.mediafire.com/?7d2xd0xw9gantpo
Gapps: http://goo.im/devs/OliverG96/gapps-lite/gapps-jb-20120726-lite-rebased.zip (Flash them after you have booted, don't know it these gapps work.)
I don't have much time coming weeks so i'll change the layout of this thread later.
I don't have a HTC Hero, so I don't know what works, what doesn't. I don't even know if it boots.
YOU have to test and report what's working/bugs. It will go slow but it's all I can do.
I have used Shelnutt's CM10 build for HTC Hero CDMA which is quite the same.
Don't forget to push the THANKS button and to thank shelnutt for his builds!
Is this the rom or only gapps ?

I just added the downloadlink.
Won't boot. And windows doesnt accept the driver, so no logcat...
Tried first time for a while, and the bootanimation seemed to pick up some speed..
Edit logcatting now! One of the first things I saw was:
I/cm ( 88): Welcome to Android 4.1.2 / CyanogenMod-10-20130105-UNOFFICIAL-heroc

Phew, it booted. Animations are a bit slow...
Whole log: http://www.pasteall.org/38695/text
Trackball use shows a mousecursor
Power button does not give a response (so no screenshot)
BT switches on!
WIFI doesnt switch on ...
Does boot. Not very fast rom. Camera is missing. Pleasing on the eye looks nice .

It boots, that's a good thing. CM10 is indeed slower as CM9 on my Magic too, probably because it uses even more memory and don't forget it just a raw build.
I'll see if I can get some things improved with scripts.

Happy to test. My hero is up for sale so I dont know how long i'm able to test it.
How can you dev something if you cant test it? I'm a software dev, but I need my debugger all the time..

Because we know what it takes to make it work since the process is almost same, our devices Hero and Magic are not that much different so the steps that are needed to port to magic are not that different from steps needed to port it for hero

It's quite easy since once you know which files have to be replaced, you just have to repeat it for every ROM you port. :good:
