Who is trying to build an Android 1.6 (Donut) rom for Hero? - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

Who is trying to build an Android 1.6 (Donut) rom for Hero?
I was thinking about having a stab at this over the weekend but I have a feeling that a few people are already attempting the same and I do not want to waste a weekend reinventing the wheel.
I can either lend a hand to those people trying to get a working build together or I can attempt to go it alone. I would prefer the first option.
Lox_Dev seems to be pro-actively working on something and also seems to be making good progress. Anyone else toiling away in the background?

Seems to be very low activity with Donut rom for Hero. Would be very nice to get the hardware support running in the first release of donut.

might seem so, but behind the scenes several people are working on this.
however this takes some time (most people have a real job

I am just wondering (i expected that this is going to move little faster) thats because i am not really an application/os/device developer ^^, but when this changes gets "splitted" will this porting process into new kernels gets faster? if this moving is going to take several days probably longer for each new version of kernel, man thats going to be so slow :-/

Why are you using three question marks when one will suffice?
I think you are misunderstanding the question. I am asking who needs assistance with building a Donut rom for Hero, just because those guys are working on it doesn't mean they want/need any help.
Please link me to these 2 threads you speak of where a developer is specifically making a request for others to help them on a Donut rom. If they exist by all means lets delete this thread.

OK, I got it. Sorry. Just the title is a little bit confusing. Anyway ... nice weekend and crunchy tasty Donut making

Hi guys , just asking if any one is thinking of porting the tattoo rom to the hero since the kernel is released ?

donut for hero?

Hi all, are there any Android donut ROMs for the HTC hero? I know there are some for some other android phone but are there any ports for the hero ?
If there were, you think it wouldn't show up? Have some patience, the device hasn't even been out for a month yet.

lol! well i too am just wondering why there has not been a rom for the phone yet!
Yeah i hear the "its only been out for a month" but seriuosly??? the magic had roms before that but just by looking at the hero forums there doesnt seem anyone to be working on cooking roms..
exactly my point minogue, i know it might be tough to make the ROMs but its not like it can't be done
Well the phone has been rooted already.
However many people rooted their magic and g1 to install the htc Hero rom. And I guess since we have an HTC Hero, developers are not interested in making roms or optiming the current HTC Hero Rom.
yea well I still dont understand why they wouldnt want to optimize the hero its supposed to be the best android phone yet wouldn't they want to play around with it and see what they can make out of it?
Well hopefully HTC will release an update soon. It's said to be released within next months.
yea at least the update is out soon so I guess well all just have to wait
as i have said before
i too find it very strange that no chef is on board with us hero users
as we all know the chefs like to come/be first.....and we have nobody
unless the HTC update is all we need
Yeah, i was kinda hoping Cyanogen would get himself a Hero and start optimizing the ROM to improves speed, along with maybe some extra Donut features.
But i think the problem with the Hero's Sense UI is that it's not open source and so you're not allowed to tweak or mess with it. Only the underlying Android is open source and so may be meddled with and distributed.
Cobblers! Windows mobile is not open source and that's been getting cooked for years!
The main reason i reckon is because we already have what everyone wants....that's why the roms are all adding Hero stuff to the Magic.
They'll be here soon enough, in the meantime, be happy with the fact that you have what everyone else wants...!
I believe that Paul from Modaco is going to be cooking soon.
He's already posted stock unbranded and branded ROM's and mentioned cooking up a ROM with new Sense UI stuff soon.
I hope it's True. Paul's bits on using recovery image has already got me rooting and doing nandroid backups etc (I supplied the stock t_mobile rom to him as a result)
I guess that most people (like myself) just have no need for an other rom. I can already do everything I want and I have only minor speed problems from time to time. So I think motivation is very low right now on the rom front. This of course will change with a new Android version or updates Sense UI. Until then I'll code apps instead of messing around with the rom.

Yep, nothing much out there yet.
If we do get people working on speed improvements/optimisations then that will be great. Back on my touch HD some of the roms were very slick.
Sense UI upgrades are main thing, along with new versions of Android itself. We'll probaly get them faster as rom's here than official upgrades

You wouldnt want to customize something that is allready very good? If I could I would optimize it so its even greater than It Is. But that's just me I guess other people dobt wabt to make something that Is great greater
I believe the reason there is no cooking going on is the fact that there is nothing to upgrade yet. The Hero ROMs that are available right now are the latest thing, there is nothing newer so there is nothing to upgrade or borrow from better ROMs. Once there are newer phones and/or ROMs the cooking should start itself

android woes on touch pro 2,which android to use?

i used to have a htc vogue (aka htc touch vx 6900 US Cellular) that would run android eclair but slowly. i was due for an upgrade and picked up the more powerful touch pro 2 specifically to run android smoother. i love the dual boot between a nice custom win mo rom and android, however, ive noticed there isnt nearly as many diffrent android developers trying to port or whatever the term is to get it to work on the touch pro 2 like there is with win mobile roms. project android froyo ([PRJ][GSM&CDMA][CAB&RAR] XDAndroid AOSP Port & Startup Utility [8/30] FIXED NOISE!) has the most working stuff but even on a overclock runs like crap, lagging and not running certain apps. the klinux eclair 2.1 sense UI is great but locks up,lags,no sounds and has no internet. neopeek's eclair runs the best out of them all, super fast and responsive but no internet,no live wall paper and no sounds.
can anyone point me in the right direction of a actual android project or update that can bring me as close to a functioning android OS that will work. eclair looks promising on speed, but there is to much that is still broke on it. thx

when i said "actual" i ment one that works, im not trying to criticize any of the developers here or not be appreciative. im just looking to have android run as smooth as everyone else does on their tp2.
TP2 Development
I am experiencing the same situation as you, but understand the TP2 is still under heavy development. Now that sound is working I would imagine stability and other features will be addressed in the next few weeks. If you want a phone that will work perfectly with Android switch to the HTC Desire that US Cellular just put out a few weeks back, it ships with Android. You can buy yourself out of the contract pro-rated for the time you have left. You cannot expect a phone that ships with Windows Mobile to run Android flawlessly. If you want to increase progress you can download the development tools and help, or you can post a bounty for items you would like addressed. You could also download the 6/20 version of MightyROM and enjoy a stable WM6.5 build. Good luck!
They all work, just to varying degrees.
([PRJ][GSM&CDMA][CAB&RAR] XDAndroid AOSP Port & Startup Utility [8/30] FIXED NOISE!) has the most working stuff

That's probably the best build right there. If you were expecting Android to run flawlessly on your fancy new phone, you are very, very mistaken.
If you want Android to run like it does on Android-specific devices... then you probably should've bought an Android device.
yea, i know its still under dev, but its like i have to choose between lag on froyo builds but almost everything works,or eclair builds that run as smooth as silk but miss out on my data connection, gps, ect ect.
ive just spent so much time into studying everything into android development and installation/updates ect ect and i still haven't even scratched the surface and it becomes frustrating after a full month of installing and deleting and back and forth testing, trust me, i know we all do the same here, but my eyes are burning from reading so many forums/topics/guides and i figure ill just ask if anyone has got a few of the bugs i have mentioned out of the way.
i can appreciate that somethings dont work cause thats just the way it is,but the kicker here is that the froyo build has almost everything working correctly, not to go back right not and look at the topic, but the only thing thats not working is camera, battery and bluetooth i think? and no big deal i dont need it anyways right now, but why cant i get an eclair build in the same working order?
i just would of thought that what could be applied to froyo could just as easily been applied to eclair.
im on neopeek v1.1 eclair right now,im going to see if i can get my data connection for US cell to work with a few tweaks, but ill miss the live wallpapers and gps.
C'est la vie buddy.
lol,now after applying a fix for US cell's data network gps works but no data
rofl, this stuff is killing me! lol

um no,im not looking for perfection, im looking to find out which one if any i have overlooked works best as of current, either by a whole new development,or by updates or tweaks. how am i supposed to help contribute my findings and fixes when i cant get the damn thing as stable as it is on your phone?
when i say "works" i mean that as in what works for you? not as in its got to be 100 percent perfect.
once again let me explain why i started this thread seeing how we seem to not be on the same level of thinking here. ill be as clear as crystal so you dont miss a beat.follow with me here...
froyo from prj android works but has a few glitches here and there (and i applaud their work and contribution to us all and i dont expect it to be 100%),i would just like it run how everyone else has on their tp2 that ive seen on youtube. eclair runs faster and smoother and is more responsive but somethings are not working on TP2. is there any updates on eclair builds? is there anybody that is having lag issues on prj android froyo,or are there some tweaks/settings/ or apps to smooth it out? why has dev shifted from eclair to froyo if eclair was running as smooth as it is,or is it just my phone sucks for some reason and eclair runs faster on it?
im trying to see what other users settings are, other experiences and other alternatives. what "works" for you. not some kind of im asking for a whole re write of the port on my lap. or slave your work to me. but now weve already gone beyond that point now haven't we?

I'm not sure what to tell you. I doubt my phone works any better than yours or anyone elses - it's FAR from perfect, as you've found and evidently have accepted.
So wait and be patient for new developments with the project - it's always gotten better & better.
With that said, I can only assume eclair development stopped because I know I'd prefer to run froyo over eclair... You can try throwing a new zImage/modules/rootfs at an eclair build, but no guranatees there.
Did you ever think it could be your SD card? Have you tried switching them out? Have you done a FULL (not quick) format to FAT32?
Froyo runs WAY faster than Eclair EVER did on my handset. There is no doubt about the difference, and thats why development shifted away from a dying and outdated version.

the xdandroid port featuring froyo is the best there is atm, nothing else. You can overclock to get "perfection" if you think thats something you are allowed to say. Fact of the matter is that you arent developing these port, nor are you contributing in any way shape or form. If you are looking for a smooth android experience go get an android phone, if you want novelty and pioneering then stick to your TP2 and install xdandroid and stop arguing with other members on this forum.

I personally have tried them both and I just like xdandroid posted by reefer better, so I guess I should have said " in my opinion" rather than just "atm". my bad. I just hate it when people come into forums just to ask questions and to belittle the developers work and not search first themselves. Usually those are the people that are here solely to freeload and not even help with troubleshooting other members problems or post experiences.
this is actually my 10th or more install of prj android froyo and this time for some weird reason it is faster.
yes i did format the sd card the long way, i used gparted live cd as well because i had to set it up for neopeek in 2 partitions . i have two sd cards at 2 and 4 gigs (i swap between) that i just decided to keep a 512mb partition in ext2 for projects like neopeek on both of them.
regardless this time around is giving me a faster experience on froyo, and i didnt edit change anything, just the common install with a soft restart as usual.i am using the blazn overclock i believe it is 716 or 768 mhz.
and of coarse i will keep you posted on any changes or fixes i find.

what is it with you people, didn't mommy and daddy love you enough as a child and teach you if you dont have anything good to say then dont say it all. who is belittling developers? i didnt come in here saying i think some one from this project or that is retarded,as a matter of fact i am grateful for the work these people have done and your trying to belittle me. im explaining what issues im having between different projects and jerks like you are trying to make me look like the bad guy.so comon down from your high horse and actually read what im talking about instead of jumping of the handle and making your self look like a complete jackass. yet once again, you miss the point. if i wanted an android phone i would of got one from the beginning ,i got a tp2 obviously to play around with android, see what it can do,what i can do to it and other reasons. ive got a few dev tools to create software for android i would like to use, so im asking questions, and if you sat a computer for as long as i have researching this with 30 or more tabs open trying to take notes from other threads, you'd be sick of reading all this other crap and post your own experiences/questions too.
and im a little well wiser than to keep stroking your ego, because people like you starve for the attention, otherwise you wouldnt jump into this thread to post your snotty ass comments.so if you wanna keep talking crap instead of offering something insightful to say,go ahead, cause im done dealing with **** heads like you.
Well another thread where you all jump on someone and make him look like an asshole for asking questions. How can you help people when you treat them like ****? I've been working with Linux and Android for a while now and I bet half of you write code that looks like a kid scribbling on the back of a McDonald´s napkin. I tell you what.. Treat people better and you just might have more people to aid in the projects and to the functionally quality. I have been messing with Linux and the open source development scene for years and this is a joke. Like a bunch of kids with computers and a power trip but on the same token you all write code like old people ****

Awesome, feefeeboomboom/isaac. The flipside stinks on 2.1. There is no storage space. I really really want 2.2 or 2.3 to be able to store my apps on the SD card.
I hope it you are making progress and that you stay with your GF and that she lets you play with her phone.
Any Updates?

Never deved on an android phone before, but I'm a linux admin, and I love doing custom hacks on these things. If I can be of help, let me know. Trying to see how to get the ball rolling on setting up a CM6 version for this phone right now. I'm pretty sure with the limited hardware that this phone has, CM7 would be a huge overkill -- if it would run at all.

Well, you caught me. I actually think it would run fine, but it is much easier to use the same kernel and just mod everything else. You can run 2.2 on 2.1 kernels, but you can't run 2.3 on 2.1 or 2.2. So, with that said, it's much easier for me to just take a current image, strip out the bloat, and give everyone a new version based on 2.2 that works out of the box than finding all the missing kernel modules for 2.3 and building it from there.
In short, I'm lazy, and I want to have a newer release out faster.
haha oh ok no sweat! Sorry wasn't tryin to call you out...just curious. Anything that can be done would be great! Hope you get something going soon!
I was thinking of maybe getting the flipside on te insurance program (from a backflip) but it seems like you guys are worse off than us. i cant seem o find source code on moto's site... do you guys know where it might be?
Any progress on a CM7 port? I just got my GF a flipside since she can't deal with on screen keyboards....and she previously had a backflip with CM7 lol
so I've been visiting recently on this and the cyanogen mod forums and it doesn't look like anyone has hit gold yet, or have I missed something somewhere and all the cool kids are having fun with their flipsides and I'm out in the lurch?
My wife too got this phone because of the keyboard...If no development comes soon...I think I might just try and sell it to whatever sucker wants to buy it and then head on over to Canada (eh?) and purchase a G2...
maybe soon...
Motorola is beta testing froyo right now. We may soon have a valid froyo image for the awesome development teams to work with.

[Q] [Gingerbread]Lack of progress

I've noticed, after hovering without an account here for the last 6 months, that there is a lack of development progress for the gingerbread port from xdandroid. I know they are busy with the froyo builds and what not. But has there been ANY progress made for GB? I'm running the alpha build and it is noticeably faster than froyo on my tp2. The inbound sound when receiving and making calls is clearer. It also seems to handle my cell phone signal better than froyo. If there is anything new for gingerbread but hasn't been released could someone point me in the right direction? I am willing to use my phone for the devlopers to test new builds on and report back every function that works and doesn't if need be. Thanks in advance for anyone who answers.

Same here! I just visited the gingerbread thread, and arrrghhh (i'll learn the correct spelling eventually, or is that right?) basically said that they have to port the fixes they made with FRXO7 to gingerbread, so progress seems to be getting made
Sweet. Im excited about it. I prefer gingerbread to froyo. It handles data better I've noticed. I'll be donating some of my time going through the source to see if I can help at all. I have experience in c++/c# coding emulators for MMOs. I know its a big jump from games to an OS but eh I would like to help as much as possible. I'll let ya know if i do any improvements myself.
Just tried it in gingerbread, just for kicks. and i found out that...
the same thing happens (-_-) still testing!
I managed to get it to work on GB just fine. no issues no lag oddly enough.

That said, from what I've seen from other devs getting the ROM on the device isn't that hard once you know how and assuming it's not some tricky ROM meant for a specific device (that said, MIUI is the kind of ROM that to me seems like it should be easy to get on a wide number of devices). So, if you want MIUI, it's probably best to ask for someone to port it and if it isn't too hard (I don't think it is) it's just a matter of the dev being nice enough
Teaching you to compile the ROM on your own though, may actually take a lot more time and effort. If you want to learn to make ROMs, which actually is rather easy compared to other parts of developing if you're not making your own from scratch, you could learn to do that, but it's probably better to learn the basics and go to a thread for it.
If you just want MIUI for your KF2, it's probably easiest to ask a dev to do it for you.
As always, any dev feel free to correct me if I'm wrong

I'm actually finishing up my college work then I'm setting up my environment. I don't believe getting at least an alpha build up and running will bentha hard, I just need someone to double check my work so that no one is bricking their device due to a mistake I make
On the note of questions, is it possible to make a suitable Linux environment with the wubi installer?
Setting up Ubuntu now
base and port rom downloading now, ill keep everyone up to date with progress
Any update? para would be a nice port also! I tried but couldn't get it to boot...

Biggest issue I'm having is finding the tools and getting the drivers to work on Ubuntu. Its a bit of a learning curve but no worries I'll get this baby working. Also got a project I'm helping a friend with for the nook.

Also what device does para run on? Easiest way to port a ROM is make sure its one that already works on a similar device ( porting miui for kindle fire to the kindle fire 2) also the ROM your trying to port should have the same screen density. The three links up top seem to be excellent sources of information
for anyone thats interested i believe im almost done with an alpha version of the port, im asking a few newbish questions as im teaching myself as i go and im gonna try to have some people take a look at what i did just to make sure theres no insta brick on flashing it.

Once I get some help with the update script and have someone take a look at the files to see if they can see any major issues I'll upload it and send you a link. However basic disclaimer around here applies.... If the world ends etc I take no responsibility. Ie don't sue me lol. But that being said can't wait to finish this.

Thanks
So far I'm stuck until I can either a figure out update scripts myself or I get some help. Everything seems OK but till I can try to boot this myself I can't really tell. Also once the HD codec issue is fixed I'll be merging that, I'll also be taking suggestions for fixes.

Update script should be fairly easy just compare the base and port I guess?
I got Ubuntu set-up and I'm going to begin porting paranoid. Also don't worry I have a few test devices

Oh I forgot about HD....hmmm. I am not sure how difficult patching things from other ROMs in is, but it seems like the next hascode release should fix most if not everything majorly wrong and I think that would be a better base point for building ROMs. It could be easy though and the thing is pretty damn stable. I've only ever had one issue beyond HD and re-flashing fix it so, possibly this is a good build to work off of
Yeah, it seems no one is really on right now but later they may be able to help, especially in IRC

One would assume but with semi limited knowledge on them I come to two assumptions, first off is the simple fact that I know the partition tables are different. So if the script tries to send something somewhere it doesn't belong it could be bad, second I see some differences in the scripts that I don't understand and there for do not want to mess with them until I do or someone who does will explain.
My goal is to not brick any testers kfires just seems bad for business

After looking more in depth at the update script I saw one major difference...
Which is to do with the dev/block
So I went with the previous ROMs update script and I'm making the zip for initial testing now.
Fingers crossed
