Love at first sight, now I hate it. Anybody else? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

I got my t-mobile TP2 at the end of August. At first I thought it was the best device ever. The screen was huge and clear. Web browsing was awesome and the keyboard is just the best...
Now a few months later I hate this thing. All the things I love are still true but so many bad things have surfaced.
The phone is slow and unresponsive. I hate that it ignores my inputs and I push the key again and again and again and then it decides to empty the buffer and gives me 15 of the letter I was trying to type. I don't like the wait after I make an entry.
I can't stand the lack of a scroll wheel and Dpad. Take GoogleMaps, I knew before that certain actions were a precise number of scroll clicks and then a click to select. Without the wheel I'm stuck pocking at the screen. I used to be able to use Gmaps driving without looking and only taking attention away from driving for a split second. I can't use it now because it's too risky...
I've tried to speed the device up and make it as close to what I want as possible. I turned off Manila and installed voldpad but it's not enough. I'm sick of hard resetting the device trying to make it faster.
The stupid iphone did this. Microsoft and HTC now think that everyone wants to tap away at screens with gimmicky interfaces and the devices are loosing real functionality.
My 8125 was a better device, buttons everywhere and didn't lag.
Thoughts?

yup, walk to the toilet and flushhhhhhhhhh it

I would have to agree with you to a point. My first device was the 8525 . I have also used the tilt and the fuze. It seemed with each generation, the device loses fuctons out of the box. If it was not for xda, i would be hating these devices and gotten an iphone. The tilt 2 is no exeption but the improvements over the fuze out weight the bad aspectes of the device. It might be awhile before the apps catch up with the hardware.
there has been a new wave of devices that use the sliding keybord layout. e features of the upcoming droid read like the wishlist for htc on the touch pro 2

Well, this sounds like a hardware issue to me.. perhaps you have a defective phone. Mine is fine, there are a few software glitches here and there, but overall that problem is not common for this device.
I came from a Wizard, so ya know..

I hear ya, I came from a Samsung i760, quite possibly the last WinMoPro phone that will ever sport a traditional phone button grid on the front of the phone (*plus* an excellent slide-out qwerty.) I got quite used to it, and I could do everything blindfolded. It was also built like a tank, no case needed.
But like you, I was seduced by that big, luscious WVGA screen. And so far Im pretty happy, although I do miss the buttons (and Dpad) alot. "The devils' greatest trick was to make the world think they didnt need phones with buttons" was my mantra.
Well, the tradeoffs are good, good enough that I think I'll stick with the TP2 until something better comes along. The speed is much faster, the screen is, well, gorgeous, and a myriad of little other things make it more preferable than the i760 *OVERALL*.
...but man, I wish I could mate the two little bricks and get the best of both worlds.

Well it just is impossible to have both a large screen and buttons on the front of the phone. I still think this phone is the best of both world with the slide out keyboard. This phone's keyboard is very easy to use and large. My Tilt keyboard would sometimes not register a key input because I didn't push the key hard enough. This one is as fast and easy as typing on my computer.
As for sluggishness, I have had none and still use the default T-Mobile rom with TouchFlo3D. Which is actually very suprising to me in having it work so well. With the Tilt you had to ditch the AT&T rom so fast it wasn't even funny. As for your keyboard problem, it almost sound like a hardware buffer problem or that you have something messing you drivers or freezing your phone. First I would check the Memory Usage and then perhaps dig down deeper into the Task Manager and see CPU Usage of your various apps to see if any are hogging it. Perhaps selectively uninstall software. Or last try a warranty exchange.
Granted, my T-Mobile USA Touch Pro 2 doesn't have much installed or changed yet. It does have Exchange Push activated and Facebook, actuall AIM, MyPhone, Marketplace, Bing, Skyfire, PHM RegEdit, Netflix Mobile, and Garmin Mobile XT installed.

I noticed a huge reduction in issues once I switched to WinMo6.5. The keyboard buffering problem is still there, but it's nowhere near as bad, and only really occurs if you fire up an app and immediately start typing.
You just have to realize that what you typed WILL show up eventually, and that the device will quickly catch up to you. It's no different than opening Windows PowerShell on my laptop, and typing a command while waiting for it to load, it'll execute the command once it's loaded...I don't have to worry...

My problem with the TP2 is that it feels fragile and just too.. plastic.. I've had a HTC Wizard before which didn't feel like cheapass plastic.
Too bad HTC has cut on the quality of their phones.. I don't want my phone to feel like it's going to break when I bend the hinge.

i feel the same way. for me tho, i dont think its the phone... i think ita WinMo6.5. So outdated and UGLY with the 6.5.1 additions of "finger buttons." ive been searching for a phone that i can use on tmo with 3g, othrer than mytouch and g1. i hate those devices. if i could get the rhodium onto hero, life would prolly be better.

I am with you 100% when it comes to the d-pad. I currently am still on the Fuze and miss the d-pad from the Tilt. Left and right on the Fuze is unreliable, but I can still use up and down. I am very hesitant to move "up" to the Tilt 2, and you are confirming my fears.
You are right, and I've also thought that if/when Apple makes an iPhone with a qwerty keyboard, you will suddently see a huge influx of new devices with qwerty keyboards. I also bet Apple will come out with a slick voice recognition interface, then everyone else will be following suit with that too.

I still love mine, but dumped the stock ROM a long time ago. I'm on Fusion v6.0, 21869.

I moved to the Rhodium from the Vogue about a month ago and I have to say I love it as much today as I did the day it arrived, probably more. Stock ROM. I thank God every day the DPAD is gone - what a waste of space. Have experienced no hardware issues and far fewer software issues. For the first time, I have a phone that only gets reset during my weekly backup each Monday morning instead of every day or two. Although initially I hated the addition of the audio jack, I recently had occasion to use it for playing preshow music over a theatre sound system for a play, so even that came it handy, though I will always prefer Bluetooth audio.

All i can say is every one to there own, People will love it People will hate it, Me i love it, On the other hand if you Hate it GET RID and leave us to enjoy ours

Well, I'm glad so many still like it. I think my next step is to check out another unit in the store and see if mine is defective.
I'm also going to look at a new ROM, maybe that will speed it up. Any recommendations as to which one I should try?

Well I am been using it for a few months now and it still runs fine. I haven't flashed any ROM yet. Still with Telstra 6.1 ROM.
However, I do miss the D-pad too. Problem is having a large screen and a D-Pad will make the phone larger. I don't think I want anything larger so if I have to choose I will go with large screen. Otherwise I would have bought the TP instead.

I think that they could get both in there if they tried. Maybe a little joystick like the qtek 8130 or the 2125...

I miss the DPad, but then again, the screen is so much bigger than my Diamond that it's easier to finger navigate. A Blackberry trackball would have been awesome.
I'm two weeks into my Sprint TP2 with stock 6.1 ROM, and I am loving it. I listen to music and watch TV shows on the train during my commute. I just discovered voice command and I'm playing around with it. Selecting media is still a bit dodgy, but making calls works amazingly well without a need to record tags for each contact.
I know these features were available on the Diamond, but the headphone jack and storage card make all the difference in the world. I now realize that 4GB non-expandable storage is a huge liability (and ActiveSync is a slow-ass way to transfer files). The USB adapter discouraged me from using the Diamond for music -- now I listen to music and podcasts when I commute via car. No more staticky, commercial ridden radio for me.
I loaded Fusion visual voicemail, but I haven't been able to use it because I haven't missed a single call since I got the TP2 (with the Treo, Diamond, and Mogul, I would frequently get calls that went straight to voicemail).
And the battery life is a tremendous improvement over the Diamond. When I used the Diamond, I would leave the house with a full charge and then recharge it two more times at work. I don't know if I could get through an entire day on one charge with the TP2 (it would be close), but the charging itself is so much faster that I just need a 20 minute boost towards the end of the day to get me back home. The Diamond would sometimes takes 2 hours to get back to full charge. It was maddening.
I think the two features that would have made this phone perfect are a trackball and more stable screen rotation. Many apps practically crash when you rotate the screen (opera mini has to be restarted if I accidentally open the screen to type, and a couple of times I had to hard reboot because it got locked up). I'm glad the G Sensor doesn't rotate most programs -- I actually find it an annoyance. I prefer portrait mode 99% of the time unless I'm using the keyboard.
And speaking of which, what an awesome keyboard. The Mogul keyboard was awful, which is why I settled for the Diamond instead of waiting for the Touch Pro to come back into stock. I figured I barely ever used the keyboard, so it didn't make sense to spend more money and wait an indefinite amount of time for a feature I didn't even use. The TP2 keyboard is a different animal -- the spaced, offset keys make typing a breeze. I can actually pound out a few paragraphs now without having to correct every fourth letter. It more than makes up for the thickness.
And now that I have the keyboard, I can control emulated games. That was pretty much impossible on the Diamond.
Maybe in a few weeks I could change my mind, but I doubt it. If I could get the VolDpad repeat scroll mode to work properly in Opera Mini, I wouldn't even mind not having a trackball.

I have owned every HTC phone ever offered by AT&T (previously Cingular) , starting with the 2150 (wizard) , Hermes, Kaizer, Raphael, and now Rhodium. The first (2150 or wizard) was almost useless, and although you can see the potential it was practically a piece of trash. With the Hermes and Kaiser things slightly improved especially if I flashed the correct ROM, I still have my Kaiser which I use as a substitute phone. Starting with Fuze (Raphael) these phones are significantly improved, none the less lack of support for a capacitive screen have kept them one or two steps behind the Iphone or even your regular touch screen phones. My son has an LG with Symbian OS and the touch screen works beautifully, and its a lot less cost than these expensive WM phones. The notification remains an issue especially lack of repeat without third party apps.
Yet the versatility and potential for customization is far beyond any other phone. I have to say that if this site was not in existence, most likely I, like many others would have given up on these types of phones a long time ago (HTC listen and heed).
This long winded start of this post is to give you my two cents based on my experience. By virtue of being a member of this site we all make modifications to our phones, install and uninstall a huge number of app and ROMs, we remap keys and make short cuts etc. Windows OS tends to leave behind fragments of programs and registry changes and even key that were created even after uninstalls, and after many of these you have dead snippets of code left behind scattered all over, you also will have other modifications created by these programs that do not revert to original by simple uninstall, leaving your phone operating at a much less than optimal settings, where some setting is causing it to look for a program that does not exist anymore, or it is constantly hunting for things you already uninstalled, etc. My experience with my last two phones from att, is that the original ROM was really optimized specifically for that device, on both after flashing many ROMs I found that the original ROM (minus bloatware loaded by the carrier) gave me the best option for speed and functionality, which made these excellent devices much better than any phone on the market, and yes much better than an Iphone. I also found that after few month with heavy customization my phones became boggy and did not work well. I suggest that if your phone today is not working as well as it did when you first bought it, you should do a hard reset, learn how to us Sashmi which will automatically reload all the programs and settings you need. Other commercial back up programs may back up the settings that are causing the problem, and may not be useful for this purpose. Just try using your phone immediately after a hard reset with no extra software and you might be surprised at how much better it functions. If you reload your programs and it again becomes slow, then a software you are loading that may not be compatible. If so inclined you may want to reload your programs one by one and you should be able to figure out which one is causing the problem. You may have to live without a program that you like; remember many cabs you load from here are Beta modifications that are ported from other devices that may not function well on your phone . If your original OS is not fast enough then you should flash a ROM from this site that was designed for your device based on your carrier. You should remember that although it is a lot of fun to modify your phone, you may not have the best combination for optimizing your phone, and the slowness may be a result of all the fun you had doing that. I don't think it fair to say that your phone does not function well after you changed many things on it. But if you are like me, you will continue to mess with it as long as you are on this site, just remember to reset and start from scratch and things will go back to how they were!

Here's my HTC history:
Hermes (TyTN): Clunky, but a nice phone for its time
Kaiser: (TYTN II): As above, lovely tilting keyboard, faster and the most responsive satnav of them all.
Raphael (Touch Pro): What were they thinking! Screen too small and GPS a total failure, often just not working - and when it did the lag was awful. Hate this phone with a passion.
Rhodium (Touch Pro 2): Great phone. Miss the dpad a bit. No TAB key!! (OK, you can map one). Slight GPS lag. S2U2 pretty much mandatory to avoid calling people from your pocket.
If I couldn't have the Rhodium, I'd go back to my Kaiser.

I have not played enough with my TP2 yet, but I think if you like hardware buttons, you can customize the existing buttons with utilities like AE buttons and many others which allows you even double or triple click on the same buttons. I use it even on Tilt which has D pad and the scroll wheel as well. I would say give it a try.

Are you happy with you Universal?

i just have to ask this question...
I have my MDA-Pro for about 2 months now and have installed two O2 roms (I'm at present running 1.13.82 WWE from 02).
but i'm just not convinced. i'd love to love love my Universal (I am a self confessed gadget person who just HAS to have the newest thing!). it's just not 'doing it' for me yet.
UMTS (i am with the german provider e-plus) is not spectacular, the phone is ok, but i get mixed opinions as to my calls with my bluetooth headset...(jabra BT800).
Also, the device just doesn't feel snappy. it has a fast processor and i have really not many programs installed (the basics: pocket informant, resco explorer, pocket mechanic, skype & ozVGA - although i don't always run in VGA).
for navigation i own a mio168 with TomTom 5. This device feels quicker than my Universal.
am i doing something wrong? can i do something right?
i appreciate your help and comments.
Hi effjay,
just for one subject of your message.
I use a BT800 as well and have the same result using it (not even UMTS, just GSM). My experience is that if the actual available memory is too small, the BT gets bad quality. A soft-reset and I am confirmed to be totally clear again.
Your question I would answer with : "not yet" meaning I am convinced that one or two updates (which still have to come) and I will be happy.

NO :x :?
i don't know why i do it!
i purchased a HP6315 when they first came out (i was lucky to be holidaying in singapore at that time!), and i sold it again quite quickly as i was not happy with the performance.
i guess i should have learned from that lesson. i was (am?) really hoping that the universal will be the thing it should be, but it just isn't. it's unreliable.
things that worked fine yesterday (i.e. voice dialling with my jabra BT800) for whatever reason decided to not work today. i had to reset and then everything was fine. this is not acceptable and it's so annoying.
so i guess (after my moaning!) all i'm trying to say is that i hope that someone, somewhere can finally deliver a ROM that is stable, is economic with memory and that just does what it's supposed to!
stranger things have happened...haven't they?!

Not really.
I love the screen, I love the keyboard, but it's soooo slow. I would love to see a HTC Universe with PalmOS Or Windows Mobile 2003. My Old MDA III (Blue Angel) is MUCH faster. And it has only 400MHz (or 420?)
Am I happy?.
no at all.
i hate this machine specially with my Arabic langauge.
no way to buy again...
I hate this device!
I spent a lot of money on this brick! It simply doesn't work! (T-Mobile Pro!)
1.) EVERY morning it has hang up! seems to happen on recieving a mail or sms.
2.) When you open it and put it like a Laptop on your desc you cannot tap on the screen without tipping it. It will fall on its back!
You have to use your second hand! (SIC!) Even then!
3.) T-Mobile branding is so annoying that I sometimes get angry just by looking at it! Startscreen (morning booting)
4.) I'm using a DELL X50v and a Compact, a XDA III and a QTec 8310.
Each of this devices is at least 2 times faster (Even with switched off Error Handling) Its unbelievable SLOW!
5.) Roaming does not work well. When I travel by train or car, my colleages can phone for hours without any troubles. My sh*** Pro does just hang up or disconnect every 5-10 minutes.
6.) Finaly - this device seems to be unhackable (there is still no SIM-Unlocker) This may make T-Mobile happy, but not me as a customer.
There are about 25 further problems. If anyone would like to see them, just tell me!
This device is NOT for professional use!

I totally agree.
This is a nice, first generation beta childplay.
This is something the same when Frank Zappa published one album which was totally empty.
I bought mine purely for experimental purposes, I have no real need for a PDA! As such I think it's great.
I'm not convinced as a phone and will be getting a second, much smaller handset. I wouldn't like to rely on this device on a professional level. I find the battery life very poor and it once lost all my contacts. They came back after a soft reset, but I wasn't happy to have to wait over 5 mins to make a call.
Once the teething problems have been sorted out, I'm sure it will be a fantastic device. It has the potential to be great! I fear however, that by the time the problems are sorted out, there will be better, faster, smaller, more reliable devices available.
Sank5
nope!
its slow and seemingly buggy, i would like someone to do a backup on their phone that works properly then post that to see if it makes a difference... we could end up with a workable model after all..
o2 exec
I love my exec! I wouldn't change it for the world! Of course it is going to have teething troubles, but these are being sorted, both by software updates and the great people on this forum! The size issue is irrelevant, we all knew it was going to be big, and as people have already explained on this forum elsewhere the vga screen is the main reason it is a bit slow.
Just my two cents!
Fin
I absolutely loved it when I first got it. But I'm getting more and more frustrated with it.
1) The goddamn alarms just refuse to work half the time. I never know if it will work in the morning or if it won't wake me up. I spent 1,200 US and it doesn't even work as an alarm clock!
2) The device is really slow.
3) The ActiveSync in incredibly unreliable: sometimes it just stops syncing for no apparent reason at all. Everything worked the night before but it doesn't the very next morning. What the...?! Now, all of a sudden it starts asking me for an Exchange password. Why? I didn't do anything differently!
4) The POP mail account just disappears sometimes.
5) The phone is so difficult to answer - you press the button and nothing happens - the thing just freezes and I have to call people back.
6) Some programs just disappear from the Settings menu and reappear later after a few soft resets.
It's annoying that the thing is so frustrating - it's such a great concept! But the only way it work in an acceptable manner is if it doesn't have any programs installed - right after a hard reset, but if that's the case, there's no point in this "micro laptop" if you can't install programs.
VERY HAPPY.
Doesn't feel faster than my old JAM, but it's got 4 times the pixels to shift. A good memory manager and never switching it off allows it to remain zippy-ish though.
Wifi is rock solid, bluetooth works a treat, but I use that less at the moment, activesync sucks balls, but that's an MS problem, 3G/GPRS/AS/Wifi switching works flawlessy, screen rotation works great, WM5.0 isn't compatible with all my fave progs yet, but give it time, battery life is good, as long as I don't use a lot of wifi without a charger (suits me) , screen is great, keyboard is great...
Loving it so far.
Universal - great PDA, rubbish phone
there is no doubting that the Universal is a superb PDA - i don't really have so many problems using it for surfing either.
it's just mainly the phone part. it's not reliable.
so often i'm told that i was not available although my universal was turned on and i was definately within a very good signal range. upon rebooting the universal everything is fine.
due to browsing the forums here i had a very lean system with really only some basic stuff: pocketInformat, resco explorer, magic button & ozVGA
i was running the O2 ROM (corporate mode) - although i have just updated to the new T-Mobile German ROM...
i hope that it addresses some of my phone reliability issues.
i'll keep you all posted
Besides the Activesync which at times decides to go on vacation, I think this device rocks.
Everyone knew it was big so that doesn't really count doesn't it?

TP2 Touch Screen too sensitive ???

Hello all
Brand new to the board.
Sorry if this is the wrong form for this as I think this may be more a WM question but I just got my first smartphone a TP2 having come off an old MotorolaV60s and I’m having one heck of a time getting this user interface thing down.
I’m pretty savvy with PCs but this thing where I have to use my thumb or what ever to move around the screen as well as activate something on it is a major pain.
Basically I want to move through lets say my contacts list to call someone but as try to move the screen though the many that are there to get to the one I want, I keep ending up activate one way before that and it goes to that one, so then I have to back out and then start all over.
Some times it takes me quite awhile of accidental activations before I finally can get to the one I want.
It’s very tricky and very very annoying!
In regards to this I have a few noob questions.
Does this thing work on a timing thing, in other words, does the length of time I hold it get it going or is something else.
If it is a length of time thing, can I hack it some how?
In other words, I don’t want to slow down how the flow works or how sensitive anything is, just how long it will take to activate something so that if it were longer, while I’m moving things around there would be less chance that I might accidentally activate something unless I really mean too?
Also are there any really great public forms for just the Windows Mobile program that would be better for stuff like this, I’m sure this one is great but I was just wondering if there were any really dedicated to WM alone ones out there.
Thanks for any help.

Frustrated with my HTC Tilt 2

When I finally decided to upgrade my HTC Tilt to the new Tilt 2, never tought all the problems that this will bring.
The first unit was purchased on 2.14.10 at ATT local store. Two weeks later I decided to change the unit because of the many problems encounter.
It's been now two more weeks and this new phone is worst than the first one. I have to do a soft reset at least two times a day. Taskmanager is often gone from my Today screen or any other application.
I have installed a couple of software found around here, but decided to installed all of them to check if the were the problem. They were not.
Yesterday, I finally decided to do a hard reset and start from scratch without any installed software, other that the bloatware included from att.
The problems persist. The phone keeps stalling/freezing over any application. The emails are not being pulled from gmail, hotmail or yahoo (I have 6 configured emails).
What do you guys recommend for this. Doing another hard reset right now it's no easy task since I have to reconfigure all emails, lose SMS, etc.
I was very anxious to get my hands on this phone but it's been a nightmare from day one. My first Tilt was more stable by far.
Thanks for any suggestions, I just have to get this out of me.
It could be any number of things causing your problems.
I myself was very disappointed with my Rhodium when I got it. Was slow, glitchy.
After alot of reading and researching, I found it was most likely due to memory leakage. And that most devices come with a modified/branded ROM from the service provider.
I found that flashing a stock HTC/cooked ROM solved most of the issues. And using an app called 'cleanRAM' freed up alot of memory.
If you dont mind losing your warranty, then I suggest flashing a newer/better ROM. And using cleanRAM to free up any leaked memory instead of a soft reset each time
First things first, install SSK dynamic proxy CAB, Nopushinternet CAB, and AT&T tilt2 speed fix.
My first month of owning TP2 I felt very similar, having to reset every couple days. Now my phone only gets reset when I remove the battery or run out of battery (its been on for about 2 weeks now). CleanRAM is a great utility, but I suggest purchasing SSK Tools for its other great programs (autoclean, registry editor, task manager, program manager...basically this thing is great for tweaking your phone.
I would suggest reading around on the forums, looking at all the stickies, and searching for other users who have the same issues as you. This phone is a great phone, but like you have come to realize, it really needs to be tweaked for its full potential to be released.
Thanks for the suggestions!
ATT just confirm that my phone qualify for a replacement. Mine have a small square white sticker in the battery compartment. This seems to be the key of identify units with problems. I got the feeling that the next new unit is going to suffer the same problems.
I'm willing to work it out and tweak my tilt 2.
Only for a minute I consider to go for the BB bold 9700 but it's not even close.
Definately this forum was key when deciding to upgrade to my tilt 2.
Keep up the good work!

All phones have the white sticker. It is how AT&T makes sure your phone has not been water damaged. It turns pink when exposed to water. You most likely aren't experiencing an issue that is specific to your phone.
All Tilt2s are horribly slow and people here just don't want to admit it. It is using the SAME processor as your original tilt, just only clocked at 528MHz instead of 400MHz but it has to drive a much higher resolution screen. Also, either WM6.5 or HTCs implementation of it on the Tilt2 is crap. It wastes memory like no other. I haven't used other WM6.5 phones so I don't know which it is.
I really like my Tilt2's appearance and absolutely love its keyboard but I hate the hardware in it. The crappyness of the OS (either due to 6.5 itself or HTCs implementation) does not help either.
I actually just found a REALLY good deal on a Telus Motorola Milestone on eBay, just $475 after Bing Cashback! I ordered it and can't wait to get it! It has a worse keyboard but its processor is a bit better and Android has surpassed WM.

That Motorola looks good!
Well, after your recomendations and some extra browsing around here, I decided to hard reset my Tilt 2 again and start from scratch. I have installed all the recommend software and only have one freeze up today while updating the Stocks.
Ram usage is at 55-60% most of the times.
I have also decided not to exchange my phone again, ATT was offering a refurbished unit and mine is new.
I'll stick with for now with the Win 6.5 Rom, maybe there's an update or patch coming up.
I have develop extra patience since using my Acer Aspire One with Intel Atom processor, this thing also get really slow at times...

A couple of questions from a Touch Pro user

I'm planning to get a new phone within the next several weeks and would greatly appreciate some answers to a couple of Desire (or just general Android) related questions. I'm torn between HD2 and the Desire at the moment, but since I've been using WinMo for a couple of years now I (kinda) know what to expect if I go for the larger screen . Saw both at a store the other day and was quite impressed by both.
I've tried Android a couple of times on my Touch Pro, but there are certain things that are just different compared to a proper Android device - for example the handling of USB connection and SD card.
1. How's the battery life generally? I'm quite happy with the Touch Pro's battery, even though people seem to think they run out too easily (less than a day?). The phone can go for 2+ days with moderate use.
2. Will there be more hunt for the perfect radio and ROM (as per tradition )? Not that I mind trying out custom ROMs. Similarly, will there be registries or something similar to change app settings?
3. How's AVI playback on the Desire? Now I understand that last time I checked the Android had some problem playing xvid files. I do watch movies on my phone, so I was wondering how players (yxflash?) handle the usual 350mb TV eps at the moment.
4. Can I mount my SD as mass storage on PC ala WinMo HTC phones such as the Touch Pro? Also, would I be able to do internet sharing either via USB or bluetooth?
5. Is there a way to install apps or tweaks ala CABs? I've tried out the market and while it's nice and easy to use, will that be the only way to install apps or tweaks?
6. At the store I felt that the Desire (and the HD2) was very sensitive to touch. The slightest touch fired off a click on the screen, which I suspect was due of the newer capacitive screens. Is there a way to tone this down so that more pressure is required to interact with the screen? Also, I'm guessing finger nails probably won't work now?
7. Is the phone casing durable? From the demo unit I got the impression that the front panel/casing of the phone is quite delicate.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback current Desire users might provide and look forward to what everyone has to say. Thank you.
1. Battery life is good enough for a day's good use. You could stretch to two with much less use. My Touch Pro needed charging daily as does my Desire.
2. Desire's cannot be flashed reliably from what I gather at the moment.
3. Not tested
4. SD card as usb drive yes and tethering yes.
5. Apps can be installed manually just have to tick the option in the settings.
6. The Touch Pro is resistive and the screen reacts like a button, needing pressure. Capacitative screens need no pressure and work by detecting the charge disruption caused by electrically active bodies.
7. Seems reasonable
Il answer what i can , from my view point. I love this phone and in my eyes, there is not one phone on the market at the moment that is better.
1) Battery is fine, as you say with touchpro, are there people who say o it rubbish it doesnt last a day, but it does if you use your brain, i get mine to last a day with heavy use, 2 or 3 days if i want to conserve it.
3) Rubbish, xvid isnt supported, there rumours it suppose to be in the future but doubt it for a while. However, if you want to convert your files, they work fine on the desire, specially with the beauitufl screen.
4) Yes, when you plug your phone in via usb you get list come up ( you can set a default if you want) their, just charge, htc sync (the htc sync software for email accounts etcc...) mount sd card ( mounts it as a removeable device, just like a usb stick) internet sharing ( to share the 3g on your phone with laptop/pc)
6) I dont think so, but i might be wrong, however i dont see it being a problem, the touch is fine, if worried about it going off in your pocket it wont. Only problem is touching the hardware power button when its off, a v ery light touch turns the phone on, which is anoying. finger nails do work.
7) Yes and no, people say it not to hard, however i have dropped it about 4 or 5 times, and not a scratch on it all the way around. Iv had it since end of march, and only had screen protector on it for about a week, no case or anything, and it all nice and shiny and not scratched, and im a student, been out with me while iv been drunk etc.. no issues. Only issue is screen get dirty very quickly, but nothing a wipe from your top doesnt solve.
Hope this helped, msg me or post on here if you want to now more.
But get the desire!
Right I'll have a go at answering some of those...
1. After installing a program called UltimateJuice (cost me about £2) I can get usually around 36 hours out of the battery now. That's with push email, things such as weather, Facebook etc updating every hour along with fairly heavy texting and internet, and the odd phone call. Overall I'm very happy with the battery but it really varies depending how much you use it.
2. Well there definitely are custom ROMs and the like available. I've not really felt the need to install one so far, but I will consider it if HTC decide to take ages to update us to Android 2.2. Google update Android fairly frequently but HTC have a habit of taking ages to offer updates. They say they've learned from past mistakes and should be much better at it now, though.
3. I've not tried any AVI files so far, only MP4. They play well and look great. Really hammer the battery though. I can get about 4 hours of good quality video playback. YXFlash works but lots of people say performance isn't that great. There's a thread in this forum somewhere called DivX support on Froyo or similar. Check that thread out for lots of discussion. HTC did say we'd be getting DivX support but who knows if we actually will.
4. Yes, when you connect your phone to the PC you can either charge only, mount as disk drive or a couple of other options. You can have it ask you each time or set a default preference.
5. You can download APK files from anywhere. For example, somebody on here posted an APK for a different version of Youtube with slightly different preference options to the one that comes with the Desire. It's not on the market but I just downloaded the APK, copied it to the phone's SD card and then installed it that way.
6. I've not seen an option to reduce the sensitivity of the screen. Could be wrong though. I quite like how it is so I've never gone looking for one.
7. It feels sturdy enough to me. Different people have different expectations though I guess.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. The phone seems to be inline with my expectations. I'm not too worried about battery life, and who knows - I might even see a nice improvement over my TP judging from the opinion around the forum. Regarding durability, is the phone generally more/less durable than the Nexus One? I've seen those N1 drop test videos, and that phone seems to be pretty tough. But I've also read about cracked screens...
For me the biggest issue is probably video playback. I don't like to transcode my movies, and have been copying AVIs over for playback ever since I got my first WM device (HTC Magician ). I guess this is something to think about and take into consideration (the HD2 seems to handle AVIs quite well, as expected), though I did read about a possible DivX update further down the road.
I've been reading about people complaining that apps taking up space in main memory. Is there a memory problem (pre 2.2 anyway) because I was under the impression that there's more than enough space without using SD (again, not too sure from my experience with TP Android).
Also, I forgot to ask about the GPS performance of the device. Coming from the Touch Pro let me tell you that even after countless radio flashes my TP's reception is still spotty and "moody" . Do I still need to initialize the GPS in a sort of test application and wait (sometimes for ages) to get a fix before using apps such as Google Maps?
Ive had wm since the 6600 with my last being the tp2. With that said, i now have the desire, and i am seriously think about going back and getting the HD2. Im just sooooo use to wm im personally having a hard time with desire and its problems. Battery life isnt great, bluetooth is horrible, and the sd card issue is driving me nuts. I really miss the file explorer and that i can play just about any video i wanted. This weekend im flashing to a generic desire rom if that doesnt work im selling it asap.
This is a telstra version au.

GPS is much quicker to lock on my Desire than my TouchPro ever was. Keeps a good lock even in the city centre with high buildings all around. Google Navigator is free and does a decent job even when on GPRS. Co-Pilot is my preferred sat-nav so far.
AVI to MP4 converters are pretty quick and playback is smooth on the Desire.
The shell of the phone is pretty solid but not like the surround of the TP. My old TP's back chipped when I dropped it though!
To the OP...
I'm selling my HD2 if you want it? 3 months old, fully stock and unbranded WWE unit...
Let me know if you're interested (or anyone else for that matter)
@khshapiro: Yes I know the feeling. I've got my favourite music player, movie, file explorer etc. which I figure would run on the HD2 without too much problem. My main gripe with the TP is its "small" screen (hey, 2.8' was the norm back then, but soon after screens got bigger ). Also, the hardware keyboard has been acting up.
What kind of SD card problem are you referring to? I've tried out the Astro File Explorer and it seems to fit the role just fine. Hmm, doesn't the phone come with it's own file browser? By the way, I'm probably getting one from Telstra too (either the HD2 or this phone), or perhaps an international version.
@ls1971: good to hear that there is no more drama and satellite hunts .
The Desire doesn't come with a file manager 'out the box' - I use RootExplorer (rooted) and EStrongs File Manager
i downloaded a "file explorer" from the app store but its not as good as the wm explorer. do the search on desire sd card problems, sometimes it stops reading the card and says its damaged ,asking for a reformat and required a few turn ons and offs to fix. the Bluetooth issue is sometimes your bluetooth will work sometimes it wont. its a real pain if you use you phone as your mp3 player with a bluetooth headset. i "hear" they may be comming out with a fix for it but google still refuses to admit there is a problem and to contact telstra.i bought my phone outright and am using vodafone sim.......... word of advice stay away from the desire until the problems are worked out or it comes with 2.2. i had zero problems with my touch pro 2 , unlike my touch pro with i had 19 replacements. i went with the desire because it was new and smaller (thinner) than the tp2. i am selling my desire after this weekend if i cant fix it and buying an unlocked tmobile hd2. seriously read up on the problems. if you never plan on using a bluetooth stereo headset and dont care about your sd card not reading all the time or bloatware then get the telstra desire...............
There are no apps to speak of for the HD2 surely?
do not get the HD2, The biggest problem i had with the device (among others) is that the screen stops reacting now and then.
So while typing sms sometimes i have to stop for a second or 2 and then i could start again. Thats why i changed my HD2 to a desire!
Hmm now I'm confused . I was pretty set on getting the Desire despite lack of AVI playback (for now) but after reading about the problems I'm not so sure.. I don't use any BT device, but that SD card corruption problem seems to be widespread and serious, and I do use the SD storage alot.
What SD card problem ? I got.my desire only a few days ago to replace my 3gs and I love it .it is far.more stable than any wm device ever made

Never had any SD card problems either.
Hi and Welcome. I am going to take my opportunity to put my pennies worth in as i've owned the tp2, hd2 (amongst others) and now a desire. I have to say that, if i'm honest i preferred the tp2 to the hd2, despite the better hardware in terms of the processor and screen size. The problem is simple, Win Mo is just not suited well to capacitive screens. Once you get to a page where you're trying to tap on them little radio boxes you'll quickly get frustrated. The same goes for using opera, i found the screen to be really inaccurate a lot of the time and browsing was a really frustrating experience. I very quickly found myself getting annoyed with it. Text entry was another bug bear, on a tp2, the keyboard is absolutely second to none, just about the best, and you'll be moving to a hd2 which, again, due to a wildly inaccurate screen, has to be THE most awkward phone in the world to text on, and its partly due to the size of the screen. It can be quite hard, unless you have huge hands, to reach over the whole screen with one thumb of one hand.
I now have jumped from win mo to android with a desire, it has been a learning curve, but not a bad one. I have to say that for me at least it's about as good as you can get.
Also, i feel that android is very future proof, its fairly new, and arguably better than most mobile OS's and is evolving rapidly. I keep my ear very firmly on the mobile pulse and i believe its the way forward. I just hope to god that HTC don't hang around for too long rolling out the updates, as this is my only concern.
From what I've read, SD cards may get corrupted from time to time and become unreadable (especially when you connect the phone to the PC). Sometimes a restart solves the problem, while other times you simply end up with a non working card. I've read reports about this from around the net as khshapiro mentioned, and I do use my SD storage alot(for music, files etc.). People say the problem may not occur right away (more than a month) but usually gets progressively worse (even on cards that have been reliable and used for years without any problem). Do a search in this forum or google for "SD corruption htc desire" or "SD mount".
@Clivectmob: indeed, even though HD2 has a couple of features that I like such as video playback and basically familiarity with WM, basically WYSIWYG as developers move on. Regarding rollout of the latest version well there's always chefs .
I have no problems with the SD card and Bluetooth on my Desire. I'm not saying that others do not, but I'm pretty certain it is not as widespread as this thread might lead you to believe.
Regards,
Dave
I come from a touch HD, and seriusly looked and tried the HD2 and now hava desire. Although WinMo has some advantages, it's just not properly suited to a phone, you'll always have to reset every now and then, probably hava a ram sweep app and other performance tweaks.
I've had the desire for several months now, and while i flashed a new rom after 2 days and about 3 a week on my touch Hd i havn't changed anything on my desire. It works great out the box and works very consistently (win mo doesn't) so even if you don't flash you'll be very happy!
As far as sd card goes, no issues at all (though i am using my own 16gb) and i don't think it's a widespread problem!

Tilt 2

I stumbled on to this site looking at phones on ebay. Great find. I see that some of the threads indicate that some end users have been able to replace the ROM and OS on there Tilt 2 WINMO phones with Android and other fixes to make this incredibly slow freezing phone a respectable Smart Phone. I have been a WINMO user for over eight years and have never owned a bigger slower piece since my original brick phone. Have had it replaced twice and now am going to switch to the new Android offering from At&t. But if I can make this better phone I am all about it. I know I sound like a total rook but some help would be appreciated.

sure you can replace WM with Android, but remember its not a fully operational OS because its a port, so i hope you can live with no sound, bluetooth and no camera....battery could be an issue but with the latest builds its been a HUGE improvement ever since the project started, and also to have a MicroSD card in hand to make Android work, but keep in mind the speeds are not going to be like Windows Mobile since it runs off of a MicroSD, but if you really up for it and you want to speed up your Tilt 2 if youre on WM, i recommend flashing a ROM just be sure to HARDSPL before you do

Cool so Android is out on the Tilt. I noticed what you have done with your tilt 2. Even though I am Computer savy I would like to do something somewhat easy for the first time out. Thanks for the help I will check out the info you gave me and hopefully get it done right.
I keep reading posts about what a POS the Tilt 2/TP2 is and I'm baffled because mine just doesn't seem to fit that description. Mind you, it's no speed demon, but it does all I ask of it with ease. And I've yet to have it freeze up requiring a physical reset. I hard reset it once, but that was because I installed some stuff that wasn't designed for it. I've modded the heck out of mine and gotten the eye candy (of which there's a ton to choose from) where I like it. Yesterday, I impressed some friends when I quickly got some restaurant info from Bing on my phone and then did a quick Skyfire search on some rock band to settle a bet. This is not my first WinMo device, but it certainly is the best so far.
brother I wish mine was all that. I got my first htc tilt2 in Jan this year. Did alot of research and did not find a whole lot to worry about. Got the phone and was happy for about the first month was up. The internet is slow, constantly freezes, when switching to keyboard the darn thing goes three ways from sunday and locks up. I have actually seen static like on my tv. So I went to the local At&T device support center and the dough head told me its windows you will have to learn to deal with it being a hunk of junk. On my second one signal sucks still slow as hell and locks up all the time. Have had to reset (hard) numerous times. Not gona get rid of them, however gona check out some of the mods and see how it goes. The HTC is also not my first WINMO originally started with the orginal Black Jack and dont look forward to the droid conversion. But Will check it out and Hopefully mod this one out with this site.
